Having a load of VHS tapes means that i had a pile of plastic that i couldn’t use including a load of films that had not been remastered into any digital formats including DVDs or streamed online so i thought it would be a good thing for future prosperity to convert these into a format i could share across all the platforms i own.

The convertor is really small small, although the preview screen is big enough to get the idea on how far along the recording is, the multitude of cables included is a nice touch as i could get started using them straight away without having to go out and buy any additional adapters or cables.

Capture quality wise you’re really restricted by your input media, some of the VHSs i have are old and a little damaged so i had to restore them a little bit before transferring them, which i would recommend for anyone thinking of doing the same.

My Full Media Recorder from Digitnow is working really well. I was concerned that the audio might slip with the pictures but so far so good. Copying old video tape and saving to my computer as files is working well. I have ordered extra mini memory cards as I have so much to transfer but it’s handy that one comes with the unit.

Have just successfully transferred tapes from a camcorder and a vhs player onto this wonderful device with ease. The supplied memory card was then put into my laptop and the vids played fine in windows media. Quality is great with the option to record in a higher quality even (a bigger sd card is needed for this obviously) and there was no faffing about having to finalise recordings etc, just unplugged the sd card and popped it into my laptop. The only thing I will add is that the files are recorded in AVi format. I had trouble playing these on a Mac and as the person I was doing the vids for wanted them on a pen drive that she could put into the back of her tv, I had to transfer the files into MP4 resulting in them working well on everything. I got some free software off the internet for this. Built in speaker and ability to see the recording without plugging it into a tv was also great.

Connected up the camcorder with the provided leads red white yellow. Started recording with the sd card included and noticed it was jerky changed it to a bigger and faster card and it improved recording. Shame it’s avi files and not mp4.

Nice enough box and does what it is meant to. I had a problem of the Micro-SD card sliding inside the box rather than the slot it’s meant to be in. I’d also like to be able to turn the volume down to zero while recording. You can mute the sound on the recording soundtrack but not mute the inbuilt speaker.

So far to date, it’s the most simplest kit to convert VHS tapes into digital. Be aware, it can only take a max of f 32GB micro SD card. I’m not able to use the hdmi lead to save from dvd to the memory card yet. But overall, I’m happy with the kit as I have over 300 hours of personal family recordings. It’s well worth it.

This is a great product to transfer your vhs and camcorder tapes to digital, to store on Microsd card or dvd, very easy to use, you need to connect the digit now to a vhs player or camcorder with the leads provided and record in real time. When you finish recording onto your memory card you can then insert into your laptop or tablet to watch. The recording is only as good as the original tape, so if your tape is quite old and there are horizontal lines going across the screen this will show as well. But overall I think this is a great gadget just to preserve all those family videos of when your kids were babies during a time where there was no mobile phone cameras to capture them growing up.

I have tried a few video transfer gizmos with limited success. I have a library of VHS tapes with family videos that I wanted to add to my digital collection. This little gadget did the trick. I’m a bit of a technophobe but even my old brain managed to use this gadget without the need to read the instructions. Easy peasy to use and the results are excellent.

A great device, only dropped a star because of no ‘S’ video connection, though strangely includes a scart adapter that has a ‘S’ socket on it!
The instructions are typically a poor translation from Chinese, but a bit of fiddling got it to work fine. A pity there’s only two quality choices, normal VGA and QVGA the size, so very poor when VGA is only 640 x 480. I guess most people would use this to convert old SD/analogue tapes which were of low quality in comparison to modern standards.
Once used a couple of times, it was simple enough with consistent results.
Overall a decent device that I’d recommend.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’ve been meaning for years to capture some of the VHS recordings of our children growing up onto digital. As there are many hours I wanted to preserve special moments only which made it difficult to give to one of the many companies offering VHS to digital. When I first hooked up the Digitnow to our old video player I was pleased with how easy it was. Some reviews I read mentioned having to source their own VHS to AV adaptor but this had one included in the box. Within minutes I had captured some digital footage and transferred it to a folder on my MacBook. This is when my troubles began. Quicktime player said it didn’t recognise some aspects of AVI, the format it was saved in. After some searching I found that Elmedia video player would play the files fine. The next difficulty was that I wanted to edit the many short clips captured into larger batches. iMovie again didn’t recognise it. There is video editing software our there for MacBook that is compatible but I struggle with new software. The answer was to drag my old Windows laptop out of retirement and use video edit on there which worked just fine. So I have to say, in conclusion, the Digitnow is a great bit of kit. Simple to use and save the footage. Best used with Windows but if you’re a Mac user I’m sure you will soon find compatible editing software.

The only improvement I would recommend is that there could be a pause option so instead of each time I want to stop recording it doesn’t create a new file.

I did contact Digitnow to discuss the software that it comes with, again only windows compatible, and they were very quick to reply and very helpful.

Simple to operate using composite leads from the video camera to this unit to record the video then small USB connector out to MacBook USB connector in. All leads are supplied.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersFeels quite cheap and plasticy and while you’re recording from hi8 cam it looks a little bit out of sync and laggy.. but its actually a great little machine so far one you get the footage on your pc no lag and it’s so easy to use, it is just turn it on press record then press play on the film you’re digitising then you just connect SD card pc and just opens as a normal file with no extra software needed. I purchased a popular brand device like this that you had to be connected to the pc and it constantly had a big green strip down lefthand side and very poor quality even for hi8 but this device has fixed that.. I actually bought another 8mm camcorder haha thinking it was that and the popular brand couldn’t be to blame. So anyways after 5hrs of use i’m a very happy chappy and highly recommend it especially considering price of popular brand competitors. Il update if anything breaks down.

I’ve used this device to convert camcorder analogue and digital tapes that i haven’t seen for 20 years – easy to do simply capture the video on the micro memory card then used a Sd card convertor to upload to my iMac. Unfortunately apple does not recognise the format so i bought some software called Movavi video convertor which i used to convert the file to MP4 format and then copied files to photos on the iMac. Sounds complicated but its actually very easy and i am definitely not a techy!

It took me 3 attempts to find a converter that did the job and this one, though a bit pricy, definitely did the job. Little tricky to make sure it was linked up to the video player correctly, but once I’d sussed that it was a simple case of playing the video and it converted it. The arcsoft software is a bit complicated if you want to edit the converted file.

I will purchase this again and hopefully have better luck as it is a good product and ideal for my purpose.

This is a simple to easy to use device for quick recording from your TV or video record / HD drive. It does not require a computer. It records through a scart or composite connecting cables, so make sure your TV has the suitable connections.. It records in a 4:3 screen ratio and saves to an AVI file format. If you want the recording to be viewed on 16:9 screen ratio, or saved to a different file format, you will have convert it using a computer video editing software. I have been using the device for a for more than a month and it seems reliable, has a good battery life and quick charging time. If you want a quick and simple TV recording device without the hassle of using a computer this does the job. I would give it five stars if it would record to 16:9 screen ratio and offer the choice of saving to an alternative file format.

Golden Review Award: 43 From Our Usershis is fantastic,

Over the past 18 months I have spent in excess of 250 on 4 x second hand DVD Recorders. I mainly record boxing events as I’m an avid fan of the sport. I record the odd tv series from time to time too. My main use for this is the boxing though. I’m a sad git who has a massive fight archive from the past to present day (mostly on DVD’s).

Anyways, the DIGITNOW! device is fantastic, it’s very easy to use just plug it in, hit record to start a recording, hit record again to stop recording, and that’s about the jist of it. The file transfer is also fairly simple just plug into your PC via the lead provided. it automatically reads as if it is an external usb pen drive) find the AVI files via the folders then copy or move to PC – piece of cake.

You can get a converter program for FREE on the net to transfer you’re AVI recordings into different filetypes. Overall, it works really well. Only thing that would improve it was if it was able to record to MP4 directly rather than AVI but there are ways around this as stated before.

I’m able to record off a multitude of devices, set top boxes, X-Box 360, old VCR’s etc… (it works with almost anything that has Composite (RED WHITE YELLOW) Out connections. Works a treat with my Sky+HD.

The quality of the picture is limited to SD and it records all files in 4:3 ratio but again you can find converter programs on the net for FREE to make any adjustments. In summary, this does the same job as all of those second hand DVD recorders and doesn’t take up as much space. It’s portable meaning you can easily switch between devices in different rooms, It comes with a 4GB MicroSD card giving you 4 hours of recording – although like many other people I bought a bigger card and now have 17.5 hours worth of recording which is more than enough for what I need.

5 out of 5 – does exactly as it says – there’s also help and support should you need it from the seller. They sent me a very nice email checking I am happy with the product. I am delighted with it actually this will last longer than the second hand DVD recorders ever will. I’ve basically paid 89.99 for a brand new recorder – instead of forking out 45 on a second hand DVD Recorder and then 50 on another DVD recorder two months later followed by something like 35 three months later for another DVD Recorder.

I’ve had lots of DVD Recorders this machine will stop that trend.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersFabulous little device – works a treat. One improvement could be suggested (not sure if this is not already available on the device anyway via the menu options whilst recording) – a switch on the device to turn the sound off and on. Other than that, it is great. Best of all, it uses RCA connectors and not the god-awful SCART thing. Many thanks.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersPleased with this. It does pretty much what was required. Set up was easy – after charging the battery for the recommended 5h – although it was fortunate that I had a SCART converter to hand. No issues with the date stamp that some have reported, I just set it to off. Not noticed any lack of synch between voice and image but have kept each recording to a max of 1 hr. After recording I plugged the device into the computer and it appeared exactly the same as a camera – file transfer was simple. (if I want dates for the recordings I will put it in the file names when I rename them).
If the SCART converter had been included I would probably have given 5 stars, it is neat, simple and is built to last longer than I will actually need it!

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersNote: The maker supplied a review sample for evaluation, the opinion of the product is my own personal view.

Included with this set aside from the video grabber unit are a set of RCA plugs (2 audio 1 video) allowing you to connect it to a device such as a camcorder or video tape player (or anything else with composite outputs), an AV out lead to hook the grabber up to an older TV set to playback files, a mini USB cable for powering and charging the unit, a USB UK plug charger and mini USB cable, 4GB micro SD card and a HDMI cable. All the cables bar the HDMI are gold plated.

The grabber unit has a soft touch exterior and is quite small; 10.5cm x 6.8cm x2.5cm on the bottom are six silicone pads. Controls are laid out with a 4 way controller and play/pause “OK” button combined you can adjust the volume, take a still image of footage, fast forward/rewind etc. Three buttons along the top the power and menu, mode (where you can review capture footage) and a red record.

There are some settings in the menu — it’s by no means extensive just a choice of VGA and QVGA, time stamp (year or date) sound on/off, auto power off. Basic stuff but the idea is to make it easy to record so I can see why the menu is brief. On the top you have the 3 RCA inputs and the HDMI out (AV out is for the RCA cable also supplied to use on older TV’s). As this has a 2.5″ LCD you can review footage directly on the unit, it also has a built in battery (which seems to last a while though they don’t provide a specification for this you can use this if it’s plugged into the USB charger too)

As this isn’t recording in HD (didn’t exist back in days gone) files are not nearly as huge. This uses the common (though by no means the most efficient) AVI format with file sizes approx 14-16MB per minute of recorded footage. The capture quality was however good, but it’s going to be very dependent on the original footage. If you’ve not used that VHS tape player for a while I’d recommend giving the heads a clean or doing a few test runs.

There are no editing tools built into this you record the video, you can add a date or year stamp and pick sound on or off. That’s about it. However nothing to stop you making edits later on. If I compare this to a dedicated capture device for a computer this is far easier to use (really hit record that’s it), the advantage is that is can playback footage and it doesn’t require a computer to convert the files from analogue to digital.

I do have a few complaints, firstly the LCD cover isn’t that thick which lets the show down a bit as the rest of the case is solidly made. Also changing the time stamp is tedious because you can’t press and hold the up/down buttons to move the digits quickly, you have to press them individually and rapidly. This makes changing the date more work than it should be (you can just have a year shown if you want). I wouldn’t date stamp footage myself as it can obscure parts of the image just change the file names later on. It would be nice to have an audio capture mode (ie no video for cassette tapes etc), you can just record audio but it will include the video (ie blank) and there isn’t a direct 3.5mm input to do that (you can convert the RCA plugs with an adapter) Strangely NTSC also showed up on the screen but it didn’t seem to make any difference to the recording (no option for PAL)

Once footage is captured you can either remove the micro SD card or connect it directly to a computer via the USB lead to transfer the files (shows up as a mass storage device).

Due to the lower resolution still images won’t be packed with detail as they are web sized… but that’s not the fault of the device it’s just the lower video quality of yesteryear. Price is a touch on the high side, it has to be said. On the other hand the convenience factor is pretty appealing if you want to just record video (recording is in stereo if the source is) minus any potentially confusing software on a computer.

Most people will have tapes of important events and footage of family/friends, this is a very easy way to convert those moments to digital. A few rough edges on this but the actual capture quality is up to standard.
