Having had chance to use this motor tool, I can say that I am very pleased with it’s performance. It was chosen on the strength of the name; Dremel are a long established firm with a good reputation, which this lives up to. It comes in a solid carrying case and isn’t difficult to assemble. I haven’t yet succeeded in disassembling it; the mechanism holding the saw to the work bench is very stiff. It clamps readily to either of my two work benches; bending low to insert the clamps needs patience, as visibility below the table isn’t too good; similarly the on / off switch is stiff to switch on. That aside it is very easy to use – I’ve cut a dozen or so wild birds from half inch pine board with no fuss or problems. I would recommend this tool to prospective purchasers without reservation. Excellent.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersNow I am not a furniture maker or carpenter or DIY expert but I can, in my way, put together wood items. I had always wondered about having a scroll saw but never got around to sourcing one.. until now.
The Dremel saw arrived well packaged and nicely presented within its fitted case. My only criticism would be that the instruction manual is rather brief; more attention could have been given to explain how fiddly fitting blades can be.
However, I set this up very easily and, after some effort, finally got a blade fitted. I only had a small length of pine shelving to try this out on but it performed as well as I thought it might.

Once lockdown has ended I will get a variety of suitable wood and take it to the next stage. In the meantime I am gathering ‘spares’ in the form of extra bladed, drawing instruments etc.

All in all I am well please with this Dremel saw, it’s everything it says on the ‘tin’. The only thing to really detract from100% satisfaction is that I didn’t receive a vacuum hose attachment with my saw..!!

used this a few time and every time I’ve found the blade to be very easy to distort when cutting, even with the minimum of pressure. I’ve watched the videos online to see if I’m doing it right – I am, it seems. Maybe theres something I’m missing. I’ve got it now so I’ll keep working on it but if I could choose again I’d go for a dedicated scroll saw instead of this ‘gadget’

I ordered this to play about with when doing modelling, it arrived quickly and was easy to set up and like all Dremel tools works well, also with very little vibration, I don’t think it would be suitable for heavy work but that isn’t the intended use.

Still getting used to the saw. It is trial and error to know which blade to use on what thickness of wood and at what speed. It’s easier to use the wall socket on/off switch to stop and start whilst using than the one on the saw which is located underneath the plate out of sight. I have only cut out silhouette animal images so far and need to practice turning corners but the results are pleasing and the painted results look good. I need to vacuum the floor afterwards but it’s not as messy as anticipated from other comments I have read. If you want to be able to plug in a suction cleaner to constantly clear sawdust you need to spend more money but this does the job for me.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersThe actual product is neat, works very well, can be transported easily around the house, (I clamp mine to a small laptop table, and have weighted the back of the table top to counteract the front load weight of the saw, as the saw overhangs by design)
I Always attach a vacuum hose when in use, and yes, I can sit on my living room carpet and make no/hardly mess at all and can make small items for my Dolls house.
It also clamps very securely to any workbench or full size table with no counterweight needed.

I’m going to jump to the On/Off switch, it’s absolutely pathetic,
using any machinery that can do damage to you, let alone is able to sever your fingers, needs a easily accessible, positive touch On/Off switch, for quick operation.
I felt so strongly about it that I wrote to Dremel, (who are in fact Bosch)
I asked if there was any add on, or adaptation to allow the switch to become user friendly, or indeed could they tell me if there was any wiring inside the blue switch, where I could screw in a cup hook or similar that I could actually get hold of,
I was astounded at their abrupt reply, which basically was, No, and don’t modify as it will invalidate the warranty,
There was NO Hello, thank you for buying our product, blah blah blah (I informed them I had also bought their 4000 drill, workstation, engraver, multi-vise, router and flexi shaft, along with every accessory kit they do)
And I think highly of their products (which I genuinely do)
But No, they offered no practical solution, so for that No customer aftersales service, I’d give no stars at all,
End product, is that I Had to do something, as I personally could not turn it on or off safely, so I carefully drilled a 4mm hole through the centre protruding blue switch (from top to bottom) and fed a small cable tie through, and secured it in a loose, index finger sized loop,
I have now used my scroll saw approx 50 times in the last 5 months, and the blue plastic switch seems man enough to take a drill hole, and has not split,
The switch is still ridiculously stiff, (why they’ve made it like that I will never know) but putting my finger through the plastic cable tie loop, makes the saw usable to me,
I just wanted to tell others how I personally overcome the switch issue.
Disclaimer. I wish to say I do not condone or encourage any unofficial adaptations to Any power tool or machinery at all.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI use this saw a lot. It cuts well and very compact. It is best suited for lighter craft projects, which is what I use it for. It has virtually replaced my heavier duty scroll saw.
I haven’t had any trouble getting replacement blades so far and I find the blades easy enough to fit. The saw clamps securely to my workbench and is compact and light enough to remove when finished with and store elsewhere.
The saw itself detaches from it’s saw table, so the saw can be used as a handheld powered fretsaw, which is a very useful feature. The saw in this configuration is obviously a little more cumbersome than using a ordinary fretsaw, but it is definitely usable.
There is also a port for attaching a vacuum cleaner which works very well at keeping mess to a minimum.

I love my Dremel Moto-Saw. I use it almost everyday for my doll furniture making hobby. I previously owned a much larger cast iron scroll saw and thought the portability of the Moto-Saw was worth giving it a go. Straight away I noticed how clean and easy cuts were – it slices through plywood like butter. It works so much better than my old saw for 3mm to 5mm plywood that I decided to sell my other one and just stick with the Dremel. It’s so easy to use and I love how easy blade replacement is. Just slot the bottom pins in the bottom ‘foot’ and align at the top and it automatically tightens the blade to the right tension for you. With my old scroll saw doing this correctly took a lot of practice and caused many a blade to snap – having had no previous background in using a scroll saw before. I highly recommend this saw to beginners through to professionals.

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersAs a scroll saw novice I wanted a scroll saw for a modelling project I was starting on which involved some cutting out of shapes within a board. I didn’t have room for a full size saw so decided on the Dremel based on the fact that I have one of their drills, their known quality, and the fact that it boxes away very tidily. Also that it could be used separately from the table.

The result is a bit mixed. Sizewise ok, the blades are all of the pinned type which fit fairly easily. It comes with five blades, and I bought a selection of spares, including the side on cutting blade which I have used with mixed results. It’s true I was trying to cut a two foot run inside a large piece of 10mm ply and I found the blade rather tending to wander, so the cut was uneven, but it did cut it fairly easily without losing the blade, although it has bent considerable out of shape. Possibly my inexperience, but the resulatant wander will be hidden anyway so no real harm done on this occasion..

The place this item loses out is not being able to cut at an angle as their is no tilt facility. I wasn’t intending to make angled joint but a rethink of the project made me decide I needed them so I am going to have to adapt something to lift the material up to the required angle.

I have used it on 6mm ply with a guide and it cuts fine so for all intents and purposes it does what it says, but that lack of tilt gives it a less than excellent rating. Sould I buy it again if given a second chance? Don’t know really, perhaps more familiarity as I use it more might give me more confidence in it. The low speed power is 1500 rpm which is quite often the top speed in other scrollsaws.

The big plus is that it all folds up into the supplied box and is stored out of the way, and in my crowded hobby space that is a big advantage.

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our Usershis is a really good saw. surprisingly accurate using the mitre slide which you can lock to guide rip cuts if you buy the side cutting blades. reasonably quiet in operation with variable speeds. when mounted to my bench I found the on off switch very awkward to get to. so, I ordered a switch and put that in line screwed to the side of the saw on my bench and it’s now great to use. I would very highly recommend this for hobbyists, and beginners to the scroll saw,as this takes a lot of the work out of using them, such as getting the correct tension on the blade.this is done auto when you fit a blade. overall I rate this very highly, and is used more than the large cast iron one I have. I cant comment on the use of it as a coping saw,as I have not tried it. hope this helps.

This product is brilliant. it was easy to put together. the only drawback is the minutes it took to figure out how to attach the blade (there are videos on utube.com ). I work in wood and cut materials between 2 millimetre and 12 millimetre thick. So far I have had no problems. Do not force the blade to saw quickly by pressing the wood to hard against the blade as it will shorten the life of the blade..Do it with ease and the Dremel saw will be a pleasure to work with.
The hover attachment is brilliant. It is not a perfect fit with my small car hover but still it leaves me next to no mess after my work is done soo I can only assume it will be really good with full size hovers. .

I recommend this product for smaller home and hobby projects. There are plenty of videos around the net to research if this product is for you and blades are easy to find.

Golden Review Award: 94 From Our UsersThis is a really neat, well-made and compact little scroll saw, perfect for small scale craft/hobby applications. Take that both as an endorsement and a caveat; it is a good little machine for ‘light craft’ purposes but if you are doing anything that could be considered heavier use or DIY type applications, probably best to look elsewhere. Comes with a neat carry case which is always welcome, and feels like it will last a good long time.

The cuts it makes are nice and clean and there isn’t any ‘straying’ to speak of, which is mostly down to the fact that the blade position is totally fixed. This is a blessing and a curse because it means that there is no way to set the blade sideways, limiting the length of cut to the depth of the saw’s throat. This must surely be added in any future revision of this machine!

If you haven’t used a scroll saw before, please be patient and do not apply excessive force to push the material through the blade – you should let the speed of the blade do the cutting and concentrate on controlling your movement. There is a variable speed control on the device, however you will need to experiment to understand what the best speed is for each type/thickness of material.

One of my favourite features – although it is by no means revolutionary – is the vacuum cleaner nozzle. This may sound terribly uninspiring but particularly if you work in your house you will really appreciate it! Simply attach your vacuum hose to the nozzle and run the vacuum while you work, and every little bit of dust created by cutting will be taken away without floating off into the room. Great! The added benefit of this is that you will be able to see very clearly how your cut is progressing, without having to guess what’s going on under a little heap of sawdust.

The price isn’t astronomical, however I do feel there is a definite uplift in cost that is only made possible by the Dremel ‘brand halo’, such is the level of trust the brand commands. However I can’t knock the company for profiting from an excellent reputation – and in a way it would be sad if they couldn’t – so no star knocked off for that!

A great piece of kit, but more at home in your house than your workshop, if that makes sense!

I have been using this saw for a wile. But have only used it as a bench mounted saw not by hand Over all it is a good saw cuts well and clean. But when using it for scroll work it is OK on the outside cuts but as the blades are held in place by pins at the end of the blade I have to drill a lager hole than needed to pass the blade throw the wood this is a problem for fine Patterns as the hole is to big as same patterns. If dreamland could make a adapter the you could use painless blades this problem can be solved.

This saw is great for those fiddly jobs that a larger fret type saw can’t handle. It gives excellent visibilty when cutting, ensuring accuracy first time. No I am not being paid for these comments. It’s a good saw but not for heavy work, blades are expensive.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHave had the Dremel for a little while and as I use it for building and repairing guitar work wanted something that would be easy to handle and not cost to much. My main purpose is to use it to cut out guitar (wood) headstocks accurately and to cut guitar scratch plates. It is permanently fixed to my work bench as I find that I need to use it to cut down various things on a regular basis and it can be a nuisance to put it back on and off all the time. The blades are tricky to put on and use and you will probably break one or two until you get the hang of it, so I would get a few of these but they are expensive and last. I have found that it is better to have a fairly high speed and to cut it slightly larger and to file or sand down as required.

Whilst you can use it un-mounted I think you will find it quite difficult to control and you could wander off quite easily. Practice on some scrap bits of wood or plastic until you are confident enough to to try it out infer real. It is a cheap alternative for other electric scrolls that are out there but to be honest it does me very nicely and you might be surprised how well it does.

Golden Review Award: 45 From Our UsersI bought my scroll saw second hand complete with the carrying case and clamps ect . The previous owner said he had only used it a couple of times and found it hard to use . He said he couldn’t get it to cut in a straight line . Anyway I bought it and noticed straight away the blade in the saw was a metal cutting blade .I changed it for a General purpose blade MS51 and tried it out and have had no problems . I have used fine wood blades MS52 and have had no problem with them either . It’s not a heavy duty machine but it is more than fine for the hobby woodworker like myself .The option where you can remove it from the base and use it as a hand held saw is pretty neat .I wanted to make a hole in the back of a shelf for some wires and instead of removing everything off the shelf and unscrewing the shelf from the brackets I just drilled a hole large enough for the saw blade and cut the hole to my specifications .That was cool .I make small toys and wooden ornaments and have found the saw perfect for that .It will cut 3/4 inch wood but you have to do that slowly . If you try to rush the job you’ll end up breaking the saw blades . I am very pleased with my purchase and can honestly say I have had no problems with it .The fact it is Dremel is good as Dremel is a reputable make IMP .I have the dremel rotary tool and the work station and find them invaluable for my hobby . UPDATE July the27th 2016 OK Remember that this was a second hand unit and I have used it extensively since I got it .Well it has broken down not a massive breakdown but the hook holding the plate for the saw has snapped and I am in the process of getting it repaired .I had a look at other scroll saws available for the same kind of money and kept coming back to the Dremel . So I am going to buy another one brand new this time with warranty ect I’ll still get the old one repaired and I’ll keep it as a back up or spare parts . I cant say enough good things about the saw With a bit of patience it works fine and the fact it’s detachable is a huge bonus . I would recommend this to anyone looking for a scroll saw for hobby work

    Excellent scroll saw .

Make no mistake this is not a traditional scroll saw – it is lightweight and not up to cutting through 5cm boards well. However, I knew this from the literature and other reviews and have fallen in love with it. Basically, I use it for scrollwork on 6-18mm MDF (for backings etc in hand-held mode and it works beautifully. I don’t understand negative comments about inserting the blades – I found it simple with the blades supplied.

Golden Review Award: 9 From Our UsersI bought this to use for model boat building. Overall it was a good buy and I like the product. It is very easy to set up, clamps very securely, blade change is extremely easy. It cuts wood cleanly and with ease. The big advantage is that it comes with a nice case so after you are done it hardly takes up any space. Setting it up or storing it away takes about 2-3 minutes. It looks very well made and you can connect a vacuum to the underside (very essential otherwise you need constantly to blow away the dust)
Now the disadvantages. It makes a bit of noise, not too much but it is not really quiet. There are some vibrations especially with high speed, again not too much and if you use the clamping mechanism it does not affect the cutting. it does not tilt, it cuts only vertically. The mitre guide is too flimsy but then again it does have a crude locking mechanism. The blades are expensive but for my use each will last a long time and I see aftermarket ones appearing.
I am very happy with this saw and definitely would buy again. I think that it is good value but only for hobby/modelism, for anything else you need something bigger and more expensive.
EDIT: I used the saw to cut a couple of frames. I used an aquarium air pump as a dust extractor and I must say the saw was brilliant. Built quality is excellent as well. Noise and vibrations are not too bothersome.

EDIT: I ve been using this for years now. It is good. Not Haegner of course but an excellent buy. Only costed 65 back in 2014!

My husband thinks this Dremel saw is the best gadget ever and he was delighted to find that when it arrived, it contained its own motor unit so he wouldn’t have to attach his existing dremel multi-tool to it to use it.

(I know the picture shows a motor and wire comeing out from the bottom, but somehow we both just assumed that you had to already have the motor and the picture was just to illustrate how it would looks when aasembled…. our mistake!)

So far he’s tried it out on thin plastic sheets and balsa wood for his model boat and has found that the variable speed adjustment on the saw has been very useful.

It took a bit of getting used to moving the material around the saw blade, like cutting a jigsaw, but he got the hang of it quite quickly.

The baseplate and the bracket are of nice quality and it is mounted on the workbench in the shed so it’s always ready for use. We have collected, over the years, quite a lot of Dremel tools and accessories and can recommend them all for their solide design and construction. Great for hobbyists and DIYers.

This is my first scroll saw. I have used it a fair bit since I got it and been very happy with the results but it takes pin end blades that appear to be bespoke Dremel and quite expensive. Also pin end blades make intricate work far harder as you need to drill a 5mm hole to get the blade through so no really fine work possible. Also the blades at 6.95 for 5 which is considerably more expensive than most generic blades.

Overall I am happy enough but I expect to be upgrading after a year or so to a more substantial machine that will take pinless blades of better quality and lower cost.

I’d not used a scroll saw before but realised pretty soon that it is a very light duty device.

As I needed to make an odd-shaped item from 2mm mild steel, I had a go with this saw. It cuts very narrowly so there is very little waste – a nice feature but probably the same as any scroll saw.

Then of course I broke the blade! Of the five blades supplied, only one is for metal so that was the end of that job. Replacement blades do seem expensive so I’m a bit put put off by that.

It is a nice, well-made device and good for the job it is intended – delicate, light-duty, curvaceous cutting.

This is a great bit of kit that I personally am going to get a fair bit of use from. It is a crafts saw more than a DIY one but for it’s purpose it is brilliant and as with all Dremel stuff, sturdy and well designed.

Running off the mains and easy to clamp to a work surface, the saw cuts cleanly at a variable speed and is easy to manipulate. Difficult to fault all in all. Pricey maybe, but you get what you pay for with tools and Dremel stuff is no exception.

  91. Tina Bykowski says:

I am really impressed with the Dremel Moto Saw. As a product it has been made to Dremel’s usual extremely high standards and feels robust and strong, easily able to handle fairly substantial jobs on large pieces of wood. Its packaging is tight but not so must that it is a problem to put it back in its box after use.

Setting up is equally well thought out and the Moto saw is very easy to assemble, load with a cutting blade and switch on. Its use is smooth and whilst it is noisy (as is to be expected) it handles the wood well and needs only a bit of practice before one feels competent in its use.

In summary, this is a great product which will certainly be up to all the cutting one would need from a saw in this price range. Recommended.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersFirstly, if you are hoping this to be a Dremel drill with a saw attachment, it isn’t. You can get saw attachments for a Dremel drill, but as far as I am aware there is no coping saw equivalent. Hence the Dremel saw.

I always have a preference to power tools that have their own case, so I was quite happy to see that this was one such tool. The supplied case is made from moulded impact resistant plastic with carry handle and clips to hold it secure. Everything sits in nicely and is easy to work out what goes where when you have pulled it all out. The only exception is the power cord, that can be a bit tricky putting back into place.

Inside you get the Dremel 6-speed 70 watt saw, a base plate that the saw locks into, a couple of clamps to hold the base place to a workbench or table, a set of 5 blades, an angle guide that sists into a rail on the base plate and a set of instructions. Assembly is straight forward, but you will need to refer to the instruction booklet. No tools are required to put it together, everything is clipped and locked into place via rotating cams or clip lock.

The saw construction is typical of the Dremel range, being sturdy, well made, solid feel and ergonomic grip. When powered up it is a bit quieter than a Dremel drill, but with a knocking sound as the main source of noise. I would still advise ear protectors, but you are not likely to damage your hearing if using it for short periods of time. Vibration is not a problem and I was expecting it to cause a fair bit of shake, but that was not the case. There is plenty of power and speed to cut. As long as you have a good blade and don’t push it through too fast then there is no discernable drop in power. With the right blade in place some very tight curves can be cut.

When used as a handheld saw, the reduced vibration helps you to keep a straight line – as long as you have a steady hand that is. When used with the baseplate and clamped to a workbench you have both hands free to steady the material you are cutting. The plate is a good size, but long/heavier materials may need some additional support of hands. The guide is OK, but it does tend to flex slightly, it is just a matter of not putting too much pressure on it and having clearly marked lines to follow.

Blades are easy to change and can be done inside a drilled hole when lined up correctly. The replacement blades are expensive at around 7GBP for 5 blades. Because the blades are much shorter than standard blades you are not going to get the same mileage out of them – the price you pay for ease of cutting I guess!

In all it is a great saw with sufficient power and speed for any hobbyist, craftwork and smaller scale DIY jobs.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe Dremel Moto Saw is ideal for doing light craft work, but will struggle to cut anything serious–so if you’re hoping to create carving blanks with it you’ll need a proper scroll or (preferably) a band saw.

It will cut up to a maximum of 18mm softwood or 12mm hardwood (as well as plastic and thin metal). So far, I’ve only used it with 6mm Japanese plywood and it cut through it effortlessly (as you would expect), and some 10mm Obeche wood (again, it was more than sufficient for this task).

The unit comes in a nice, strong plastic storage case and is of a very solid (for a “craft”-level tool) build quality. When clamped to my bench it all felt very sturdy and professional. Included with it are 5 blades (2 x course wood, 2 x fine wood and 1 x metal), a clip in guide (for cutting straight or angled edges) and a brief instruction guide.

It’s very easy to put together. You simply clamp to base to a bench, feed the plug and cord through the large central hole and then clip in the saw. Attaching a blade is also easy: simply pull the blue lever down, put the blade into the guides (with teeth facing towards you and the points facing down) and pull the lever back up. You can attach a standard vacuum hose to the base to collect sawdust. You can also use the saw without the base if you prefer.

The saw has 6 speed settings (which are easily accessed, but safely guarded underneath the base to avoid accidently switching it on). As I say, it is really good for craft work. On my first attempt I managed to easily cut out some 6-inch tall Christmas trees and create perfect slots so they slot together and stand. You can cut very accurately and the cutting point is easy to see. For example, the slots are only 4-5mm wide (and 3 inches deep) and I was easily able to create a square cut at the end (once the two side cuts had been made). You have a very impressive degree of control and you will appreciate (and enjoy) the accuracy you have with it.

I’ve also now created a small key holder (from Obeche; basically a 9 inch wooden key with the word Keys along the top, with some detailing (done with a Dremel multitool) and 6 hooks). Darkened slightly with Van Dyke crystals and finished with linseed oil it looks great quality! (IMO!)

Before I first used it I found some good introduction videos on DailyMotion (by HeyMimi) just search for “Dremel Moto Saw” on there and you will find them. Well worth a look for a good overview of what the saw can do.

They probably won’t be much good for anything other than crafting, but they are ideal for what they do. If you don’t really need the extra depth of a scroll or band saw, then these do a great job and (unlike bigger saws) can be packed neatly away again afterwards.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis comes in a very generous size carry case, which unlike many such cases it easy to get the saw and attachments back in. The saw seems to be well made and feels sturdy and substantial. It comes with a base unit which clamps to a work bench with the two clamps provided, but here was my first problem, my work bench has a deep edge and these clamps are not big enough to go over it (max 75mm), and assuming the clamps would clear the edge there would be problems with the width, this would probably not be a problem for most but as it is for me I include it here.

Documentation is limited, as is typical today it comes with a many paged manual of which only a couple or more pages are in English, and most of that covers safety. Operating instructions are mainly in the form of diagrams; the pictorial guide for fitting blades I did not find easy to comprehend, but again I find this is often the case today (it makes me think I should come out of retirement and offer my design services to the publishers of these instruction books!).

It comes with different types of blades, the pictorial instructions for fitting the blades are not very helpful. The different blades appear not to be marked in any way so distinguishing between them is not easy, and the pictorial guide in the manual for their use might as well have been in another language for what use it is, I can make little or no sense of it, I am guessing it is to indicate what each blade is able to cut; but as I cannot tell which blade is which, or what the various symbols are supposed to represent, it is all rather meaningless.

In use, where it really matters, things get better. It is very easy to use and cuts beautifully, cutting curves is a dream – it will have you looking for things to cut scrolls in. But I do have one complaint about its use, the on/off switch is neither easily accessible when using it hand held, nor easy to operate being extremely stiff. In conclusion, a fine tool but let down by a few niggles that really should have been sorted before the product went on the shelves.

Golden Review Award: 151 From Our UsersThis table saw is for hobbyist and craft-making use; it’s not a DIY saw. When used as intended it’s better than good (but not perfect); and Dremel need to learn how to include some proper user instructions.

    PROs
    —–
Sturdy, mains-driven saw, built to last. The included clamps hold it very firmly on a workbench. It’s solid. Mains driven so powerful too.

Vacuum attachment nozzle. This is FANTASTIC. I attached my vacuum cleaner to the hole (it just fitted perfectly) and I had ZERO dust or shavings. The cleanest cuts I’ve ever had. Not only can you see what you are cutting, there’s no cleaning up afterwards either.

5 blades included BUT you need to select the correct one for the material you are cutting. The largest blade is the sturdiest and best for wood, MDF and the like. The finest toothed blade is for metal and will not cut wood successfully – it just veers off at an angle making you wonder what’s going on!

I found straight cuts were fine but needed patience; the worst thing you can do is force the material into the blade. Let the blade do the work and it’s just fine (and quick). Curves were just as easy. Holes needed a pilot hole drilling first and the blade fitted through the hole. A bit fiddly but the result is great.

The carry-case is a great way to store the saw, unless you are fortunate enough to mount it permanently on your workbench. But take a picture of it when you first open it up as it’s tricky to get it all back in again without a picture showing you what slots in where. No picture was included.

The saw is variable speed, from 1 to 5. Great. But there’s nothing in the guide to indicate what you might use different speeds for. I eventually chose the top speed for some 5mm MDF cutting and it went through it like a hot knife through butter. Should it be set that fast? Who knows, maybe Dremel do but they’re not saying.

I didn’t find the included protractor-style guide useful. It doesn’t let you push the item through the saw as it’s too far away (I cut some very small items). If you cut bigger items it may work for you.

Fitting a tiny, thin blade can be tricky as it can turn around in your fingers so it’s facing the wrong way. And with my old eyes it was a bit of a challenge. And note my caveat above regarding the saw speed. A bit hit and miss deciding on what speed to set it at.

The instructions / user guide are next to useless. For something that is potentially dangerous some serious instructions should have been included. Additionally a key to the different blade types would have been a huge help to me (this review was going to get a 1-star report until I discovered the blades were all different, and performed very differently too). Dremel didn’t respond to my query in a timely manner either. Sigh.

The UK mains plug was fitted with a 13 Amp fuse which is suitable for 2KW kettle but not a 70W saw. Replace it immediately with a 3A fuse for your own safety. How on earth did Dremel get this past ‘elf ‘n safety?

    CONCLUSION
    ————-
A very useful, sturdy bench saw which would have been a Godsend over the last 20 years as part of my electronics hobby. Thank goodness I have one now. And no mess on the floor either. Brilliant, but I’m still knocking a star off because Dremel could have made the initial user experience so much better.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersI got this to replace an old scroll saw with an integral metal base for which replacement blades had become problematic.

The base is a plastic material, strong and reinforced underneath but I am wondering whether it will still be perfectly level in several years time. However I have other Dremel products so I do not anticipate major problems. Into this base a hand held scroll saw can be inserted – thus the idea of two tools in one.

Setting up. It is held to the workbench by two substantial clamps, however I found that when in position I could not get the detachable saw in and had to loosen them which meant that the whole structure was a little top heavy and liable to fall forwards until tightened. This might reflect my own ineptitude as it is suggested that the table can be permanently mounted. The on-off switch is then under the table and proved a little stiff to switch on.

The cuts are smooth with very little suggestion of splintering on ply, although as with all this type of work it is important not to push the wood or plastic at the blade but let the saw action gradually work through the piece.

Instructions for actual use are in the diagrams – the words are full of standard safety announcements, which I guess most people using such a machine are well aware of. The thick booklet covers 29 languages but the main parts for reference are the diagrams: personally I still prefer to read words but this is the approach in the 21st century.

Five saw blades are included: two general wood, two fine wood and one metal – they are not marked and you need to guess their usage from the diagrams. It is relatively easy to spot the differences as the metal one (MS53) has finer teeth and the fine wood (MS52) is thinner than the general purpose (MS51). I did check with the website which also is helpful for setting up.

There is also another blade which cuts at right angles to allow virtually limitless cuts (reference MS50) but cost rather more for the pack of 5 compared to the others (11.95 against 6.95 in November 2013). However there is a lot of space on ordinary blades before this approach might be considered.

When inserting the blade there is one end that has a plain part before the serrated section- this needs to go towards the top. The blade has to be pushed well home in the top housing in order to catch although once this has been done a few times it becomes straight forward. I had to remove the saw unit from the table to change the blade.

There is a fence included but the angled piece at the end has some slight slack, although it seemed to hold reasonably well, once again a reminder that forcing the material through the throat will create difficulties. You still need a steady hand for straight cuts in this sort of saw. There are no other advertised accessories available and I do wonder whether some adjustable fence for parallel cuts might be a useful extra.

Overall a good piece of kit, which does the fine cutting that, it is designed for. Not as simple to set up as the old ones but I can see how the detachable saw can be a bonus.

I gave it four stars as I think it is less straight forward to set up, some of the enclosed instructions are not easy to follow and the fact that an adjustable fence is not available.
