It's great for ease of video cha
It’s a great product to video chat and much more enjoyable than on regular phone. But I have got complaints from family members that they cannot hear me loud enough. Not sure if that’s because of portal or its a fault with their own network.

Using this portal feels as if the person is in the same room. The picture is so clear.

Great product, excellent for reaching family, friends and colleagues all over the world. Superb system a little pricey but is worth it.

This piece of kit is amazing, it tracks people in the room, focusing on people’s faces, adjusting zoom to keep ever one in the frame of the TV. I have purchased 4 of these and distributed to family members. I used the Amazon deals when offerd to purchase much cheaper.

Perfect for kids and grandparents
I loved the ‘normal’ Portal, but until you try this portable version you don’t know what you’re missing. It works great for chrildren so you can move it to wherever they are playing (floor, table, etc), and even for an ‘adult’ conversation it’s surprisingly useful to be able to just grab it and take it along to another room or a different corner.

Nice idea but…
On paper this should be a simple way to keep in touch. But it exposes the most likely users, the elderly, to the quagmire of social media. Signing them up isn’t as straightforward as it should be. A VPN platform would be better.

Chatting across cyberspace
Bought one for myself in UK and another for family in NZ. Easy to set up and link to smart TV, though didn’t work with older (10+ years) flat screen TV. Initial set up takes about 30 minutes, mainly due to software updates for both portal and controller. However, once your Messenger and WhatsApp contacts are uploaded, calling them is simple and can be done by voice commands. Quality of the picture is superb as is sound through TV speakers or soundbar, with excellent synchronisation. There is a minimal timelag, even over 12,000 miles, and it feels almost as if we are sitting in the same room. Caller can also use phone or tablet, which is necessary when away from home or wandering about, though video quality is likely to be diminished.
Great way to connect to remote parents
Works really well as intended. Some might say a tablet can do the same, but for ease of use for my 60plus yr old parents, they appreciate the simplicity. This is also a lot cheaper than an ipad!
The video calling works super well. Really clear images that are sharper and smoother when WhatsApp calling or using Facebook messenger compared to my mum’s old phone. Needless to say she likes the large screen vs her phone.
A really big plus of this go model is that you’re not tethered to a power cable. Plus I don’t get the terrible angles my mum would hold her phone at, now she can put the portal down and the wide angle camera and auto zooming sorts the view all out so we can focus on what’s going on.
A side benefit is fantastic speakers. My mum uses this for her youtube and treats it like her boombox in the garden or down the community centre!
Finally the picture album mode isn’t advertised much on the go, but it’s there and will share Facebook albums. Fantastic again for various members of our family to submit photos to that album and for my mum to get them automatically.
Slight downside was a slightly faffy set up, luckily my sister was there to help mum, but a large part of that was because mum’s abroad in a non Facebook supported country (HK). Great that Amazon delivered to HK direct and overall worked out cheaper! (Presumably something to do with tax)
All in all, very happy.

Very useful for keeping in touch.
Easy to set up and very useful in keeping in touch. We use it for maintaining contact with elderly parents. The remote occasionally loses sync with the unit, but it is easy to re-sync. The system could be improved slightly if a) the unit had control buttons on it instead of just relying on the remote and b) some means of remote access could be provided. However, having said we have recommended it to a number of friends.

Works out of the box
Easy to set up and worked out of the box despite very minimal paperwork with the device. Needed to go online to find out what different features were available. Portal.facebook/gb/help/using-portal gave a pretty good description. Just a pity info could not have been included in the package (instead of various language version of minimal information!)
Otherwise, very good display and operation (switches the tv on for you!) Recommended.

I found the initial set up quite challenging until a friend stepped in to help and I linked to my family through beta. Now it’s just great. I don’t have photos loaded onto it as I find, when not in use, the simple black frame and preloaded images keep the portal unintrusive. That said my photos are on Google Drive which isn’t supported by portal – if this is an important feature for you do check you will be able to use it. Some of family have a portal, others don’t but that doesn’t mean I can’t use it when videocalling on WhatsApp or Messanger. You don’t get a full screen image on WhatsApp but you do get to call hands free and in comfort!

With the prospect of not being able to see family and friends over Christmas we bought this to make it easier to unwrap pressies and see a large screen. Liked it so much we bought several for all our close family and friends. Much better than talking on s small screen and no more heads being cut off! We have a 65 inch tv so its like those you are talking to are in the room with you. The follow feature is great as it means you can walk around and the camera will follow you.

Keeping in touch
I bought this portal incase we had another lockdown and I could communicate with my son. However my dad has been diagnosed with cancer and we use it to make WhatsApp video calls so he can see us and we can see him, he lives 4 hours away from us. It’s been absolutely priceless for us as a family. Really worth every penny .

Excellent product which we have been toying over for a while. The price was very good, as it had been reduced to 59. It was easy to set up and works very well. It will make video calling very easy in the future, plus you can close off the lens and mute the microphone so that it is secured privately. It works well with WhatsApp, which is a major plus.

What a great gadget. Although we used Messenger to talk to each other on a daily basis, I was either talking to my mums feet or the top of her head. Now I get to see the whole if her and my sister. Fantastic for keeping in contac
I purchased this for my dad to use in hospital he is not able to use this himself but it allows me to call and the nurses to answer it is without a doubt the best thing I have ever purchased in my life I’ve already managed to speak to my dad twice today. It’s simple enough for the nurses to use and call from the camera moves to the person and zooms in so it doesn’t matter that the device is at the other end of the room and my dads lying down as it will just find the person and zoom in. Incredible product for anyone needing to keep in touch with vulnerable family members

Excellent way to keep in touch with elderly parents
We bought this for our mother (in her 80s) so she can keep in touch with the family. She already had a Facebook account (and an Alexa to control lights around her house) and thus was not a great leap for her to start using this for video calling (and as an Alexa)
The voice commands do work for her (using UK English), I’m guessing there must of been an update since some of the other reviews on here.
Mum is able to ring the family easier than with her tablet, and will quite often phone us just for a chat whilst she does other things (she was doing her ironing last time I spoke to her!), She also is quite adept at receiving calls even when watching TV; the unit flashes light and there is a ringing sound.
Mum does not use WhatsApp do I cannot comment on that, however she does use Netflix and that works well for her – if it had a Disney+ app (and maybe Now TV) I would buy one for myself in a heartbeat!

Didn’t take long to set up , about 20mins but one I got it working I wasn’t all that impressed.
I like to play radio through my echo dot so I was pleased when I read that it had Alexa built in , however when asked it to play music the tv screen has to be on so it then began screening all the photos in my folder. This was ok at first but after a couple of days I was getting bored looking at them . I couldn’t find any way of just having a blank screen and playing music through Alexa and it is very distracting when listening to music and the tv screen is on in front of you.
Has massive potential!
Really good so far setup with WhatsApp and no issues at all. You can add filters and funny things for laugh. You can also read stories and things from dr. Seuss which is great for my nephew. It just needs the ability to play back music through the built in speaker and voice control for Spotify to get a 5/5. I can see these being in every home within the next few years especially with covid about. These are awesome to keep in touch.
Hopefully they keep supporting these and the Alexa features too.

Before the best way to video call
I have been wanting to try this out for quite some time, but couldn’t justify the 150 for it. After finally seeing it on a huge discount, I bot the bullet.
I have family in Japan and a niece I have not yet met due to covid. And I always feel awful that during any celebration, my brother just gets passed along the family members on a tablet.
This year though, he was able to see everyone at Christmas and feel a part of the day. All my family members love it and especially my two toddlers.
I honestly think anyone deciding whether or not to get one…. DO IT. You will not be disappointed. Its absolutely amazing and so easy to use.
Everyone that has received a call from us has commented on how good the video quality is from their side too.

Really easy to set-up and use. Bought so that grandparents in Spain can keep up with a new grandchild. Good picture and audio and does follow the ‘action’ in the room well. Bought at lower ‘sale’ price and really pleased.

Distanced family connecto
Between my dislike of Facebook and some of the negative reviews on here, I was slightly putoff buying this product. We normally use our Show 8’s for family video calls, but the screen size is not great. Anyway, being a Yorkshireman (Short arms and deep pockets) the current price reduction caught my attention (54), so I bought one.
When mounted on a 60″ TV the quality of the calling experience is great and I love the way the camera appears to follow you around the room, zooming in and out as required. You can also video call with WhatsApp, Messenger, and Zoom so plenty of choices. I liked it so much, that I bought 2 more for my family. If you can’t visit then this is the next best thing.

The best way to stay connected
We are always looking for ways to keep our family connected, this last two years more than ever, and Portal TV has given us the best way to stay in touch. It was super easy to set up (and I am not the most technically minded person!), link to my Facebook and Instagram accounts, and start chatting to our family and friends! The smart camera and sound is a godsend with four kids all talking over each other (three of whom can’t keep still!) and so I love how it tracks them all, widens the angle to fit them all in, and picks up on the speaker so their voices are clear. When speaking to elderly relatives this is so important!! The kids love the fun features, especially story time and the Harry Potter backgrounds, and we have been using it every day since we got it!
100% recommend as an affordable way to stay connected, we will be using it on christmas morning to keep our family close.

My partner and I feel more connected to my parents as we can see them on the big screen TV. We bought one for my parents too and they love it, especially my mum who has trouble seeing us on the mobile phone.

With family not so close by I love that we can connect with portal and all keep in the frame 2! When the kids are running round nanny and grandad can still see them! And it doesn’t go unused as we use it as a photo frame 2! Best Buy for me!

Great device!
I love it!! You can add apps to it, make video calls through messenger, listen to music and so much more. It also works like a digital picture frame!! It has alexa on it, so I can ask questions or get help if I need it which is a plus. It knows my voice, and I can set up a pin to keep people off it if I choose so. (Which I went ahead and did) I also enjoy that it has a privacy mode where you can turn off your camera and mic. There is so many things I absolutely love. I also learned I can surf the web on it, and turn off Alexa’s purchase by voice feature so I have no worries of her picking up purchases from commercials on tv or my kids. Another cool thing I love is I can set my favorite contacts, and I can click on the icons to call them. It has a decent speaker on the back of it when I play music through spotify that projects amazing sound quality. Believe me, the portal gets LOUD. It has another cool feature called story mode. It can read books to littles! How cool is that? That’s not even all the portal has to offer but that’s a few of my favorites! I can also have her set alarms, she shows the time and weather too. I also have her alert me of bad weather. Over all this thing is absolutely mind blowing, and goes beyond what I was expecting it to do.
Great device but Faulty produc
Really enjoy using the Portal for video calls and Spotify / Movies, but I think I have a faulty device. A lovely thick black bar that never goes away. I will speak to returns.
Great purchase
My parents use this with just whatsapp and it works great. Love that it can follow them around the room and zoom in and out without them holding it – no more forehead shots and nose viewings! Unfortunately what they can see of me just using my phone screen is limited but might invest in a portal mini. Very pleased with this purchase.

Can’t make portal to portal calks
I got one of these to talk to my friend in France whilst we cook and chat – she has an older version and no matter how hard we try by factory re setting and upgrade software, if I call her from my portal it goes to her phone and same vice versa. Asked for help and the service side is awkward and offered limited advice.
If you are just calling phones then it’s great!

UK review - ignore the others, it works FLAWLESSLY with both Alexa and Hey Portal commands
Guess they’ve ironed out any firmware issues. Review date here 6 Nov 2021. This device is incredible – best to have portals at both ends though, the experience is seemless and quality outstanding – make sure you have at least 15Mbps d/l and 4Mbps upload at each end for the best experience, although it does use variable bitrate encoding if you’re running slower.

I just love Portal for it’s ease of use. Not only does it help me keep in contact with family and friends, I can also showcase my photos on tv. However the bit I love the most is when I ask Alexa to play some music it has the capability to put up the lyrics allowing me to sing along to the songs. Happy ma

Great Product for Grand parents
Bought this for my grandfather. he is not techy but what a perfect idea to talk to them anytime in few simple clicks. it was easy to teach them and really convenient to get in touch with them to check how they are doing.
Very solid product, definitely worth the price.

magic machine for talking to friend sand family, camera moves with you back and forth BUT it only works well if your person contacted has one too, otherwise it is not nearly so useful.
