I bought this item to repair a rotten fence post that had snapped just below ground level. The design of the spike (to go around the leftover stump) made it easy to drive in. I had to make a block to help me hammer it home, which I had anticipated.
Some of the other reviews suggest the need to cut grooves in the new post, I would suggest that this is not necessary and could make the post less secure.
    Would definitely buy agai

If you can fit the the spike to the post first, It’s a tight fit so saves a lot of bother trying to knock the post into the spike. Well made and I done exactly what I needed it to do.

Each year we seem to lose one or two old, concreted in, fence posts. These repair spikes are ideal to just drive into the existing concrete, and then bash in the new post. Be careful when driving in, they can deform. Once in place seem easy to get really straigt and then last years.

Bought this to repair a broken fence post which had snapped off leaving rotten wood deep in the hole. Did the job excellently, very pleased! Great value and good qualty.

I used this product to secure a new fence post where the original one had broken off within it’s concrete base. Great way of getting replacement fence post in exactly same position as the original without having to dig out original concrete base

Works a treat, saves having to dig all the concrete out.
    Fitted in minutes.

All fine. Does the job. Solidly made. One thing to watch out for is that this type of spike, which is asymetrical, has a tendency to go in at a bit of slant. This was fine for me because I needed to get round the foot of a wall and the spike sort of bridges over it. Also I would recommend putting a block of wood or soemthing on top of the spike and hammering that rather than the spike itself: you don’t want to bend it.

Solid bit of construction, useful if you have firm and stone free base (I’ve had to dig some hole and fill with postfix which negates some of the point of these).

Didn’t realise that the insides have 2 sides with fairly pronounced inward facing grooves (to grip the wood) and using standard 4 by 4 post (especially with the various inaccuracies in that measurement) meant that no post , in my experience, would slot in – even with an encouraging mallet whack – without first cutting away two sides with a chisel to a depth of about 2 mms and then cutting 4 channels to hold the grooves. Once cut and with the help of a mallet I could attach the spike to the post and then belt the whole lot into the ground.

If you don’t clear any significant stones the spike can twist off centre. Don’t recommend using these spikes for large posts (I was using them for an pergola) and so I had to be up a ladder with a mallet. Also used them for a smaller 3 foot fence posts which they were ideal for.

Good product, did the job, hopefully will avoid most post rot, in hindsight might have bought the one’s that you tighten around the post to save me the hassle of chiselling.

Excellent. If you’ve ever used these or similar items its pretty much what you would expect.

No instructions for this item, but worked a treat and look forward to many years of service. Should be used to replace a 4 inch square gate post cast into concrete wher the concrete is visible. I put post onto bracket and hammered both into post hole using heavy rubber mallet so as not to damage post. A metal heavy hammyer could be used but use sacrificial timber to protect post during hammering.

  12. Susan29Ygljfat says:

Easy to drive the spike down between the cleaned up post remaining in the concrete square hole. To spread the force of the heavy hammer (sledge hammer) I rested an old block of wood across the top of the spike. Similar routine to drive in the new post into the spike.

They were exactly what was advertised, the size, the material, everything was correct.

  14. The Huffington Post News Editors says:

Great quality and shorter than others so easier to correct. Great price for what it is, no complaints. Perfect snug fit for 75mm posts, fit great but also easy enough to take out and put back in. Great product.

Very easy to install and restore a post that had rotted at base. Only regret is inability to drive through concrete supporting the old post, so had to reposition slightly to avoid.

  18. Hanif Jackson says:

Internal barbs a positive & a concern. Had to plan work around being sure pre-morticed post height right before insertion. Removal of post after fit to adjust not really an option. Tighter fit posts needed 4lb whacks to base/spike end to fully fit in. Results more firm than easier to use corner bolt type. 3 x Fixman for the price of 1 premium brand at local yard. A small fraction the effort of digging out post (did SDS+auger the hole 30cm pre-spiking to be sure of insertion & to get height right before fitting in post). No need to pay for a fencing pro – brilliant.

Hammered into heavy clay soil to support other decking joists and worked a treat.

Amazon description says it’s galvanised steel. “From the manufacturer” and on the delivered item it just says powder-coated steel. There is a huge difference, as these things tend to rust away in a few years. If they are not galvanised then this is material (!) mis-representation.

I don’t understand the negative comments this product has got.

Lord knows how some of the 1 and 2 star reviewers were attempting to install the spike, but worked absolutely perfectly for me.

This will definitely be secure enough for the foreseeable future, and will outlast the aged fence panels! Can’t fault the product.

    Absolutely fine!

Used to replace a rotten wooden post that was cemented in.
The product survived being hammered in the ground and the post is very sturdy.

The ‘grippers’ made the post hard to install, I had to saw a few grooves in the post to take them.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHad 7 posts snap in recent gusty conditions, looked at various options to repair, fencing company wanted nearly 1000, so I bought 7 of these and thought give it a try, well all went very well as long as you start the spike off square to the post remaining in the ground I cut some spare post to act as my ‘basher’ you need to shave off about 1/2 inch on 2 sides so it fits snug but does not get stuck, then club hammer away 4 hours of hard work but all looks good again and our 2 large dogs are contained !

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThe picture made it look smaller than it was.
However as MetPosts are as rare as hens teeth these days this is a good replacement.
Not sure if it’s the same thickness as orhermakes, but it’s ok.

Just one pointer, i used a small plastic hammer tool.
I would suggest you get one of those black hammer tools with the two metal handles sticking out.
The reason is they are a larger fit and will make it far easier to bang the post in.

My tool was only half the size of the square and made it much more difficult to knock into the old hole.

We have used this to repair a previous corner repair spike that had sheared off due to a car reversing it to weakening it and then the big storms earlier this year.

After a bit of head scratching we’ve dug an inch trench around the two side of the old post.
Slid this new repair spike down the side of the old one, using the old one as support.
The used fencepost concrete mix to fill the gap.
Left it a week to go rock solid.
Today we have just knocked a new 6′ post into this repair spike.
Gave it good tug on all sides and it’s in solid.
    No movement.
So far this has done everything it said on the tin.

It’s about to have the first fence panel attached and bobs your uncle.

I’ve given it five stars as it has done everything i wanted it to do.
So far i have no problems with.

I am using the spikes to set in place short 600mm tall oak posts to which a wrought iron spiked chain will be attached to provide an attractive boundary to a cottage forecourt. My oak posts have been machined to be a good fit to the Fixman, and have been routed with slots so that the posts can be lifted out if required.
The Fixman spikes are clearly intended for soft wood posts and leave a little to quality control in maintaining a square profile. I have had to square up the Fixman aperture to more faithfully be square. Oak posts are not as forgiving as soft wood. Otherwise all good.

Worked as described. Fits between the old broken post and the concrete. Put in place, a piece of wood in the spike to knock the spike down and sledgehammered into place. Spike went in solidly and post then went in place and half job done in no time at all.

Used this for a rotten post in the garden. It worked well but you need to make sure of the angle whilst banging it in. Well after careful hammering it went in pretty damn straight and has been firmly in place for a month or 2. Great!

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersUsed them to stake a wooden arch into the ground – didn’t want the clamp-type fence post supports, these look a lot neater, and the arch is fairly self-supporting so doesn’t need the extra depth of the usual fence post bases. Worked perfectly.
