Good product, not totally 100 % squirrel proof depending on the size of your squirrel’s, we had a baby squirrel squeeze into the cage but it didn’t do it for long as it got bigger/fatter.

Good quality product and the squirrel can’t get the seeds . The birds get at the content very easily and hop in and out without hinderance. The squirrels however still visit every day to collect the spillage from the birds from the ground.

After two weeks birds got used to it, now many are regulars. It is squirrel and jackdaw proof and easy to fill.

Squirrel got in by removing the lid twice.
But Vasaline foiled them by smearing Vasaline on the supporting posts.
Now I am amused to see them sliding down the post when they try climbing up them.

It is as described – the squirrels don’t get a look in!! Only the smaller birds can feed from it so the magpies and other larger birds dont eat all the nuts. Very good product.

The lid does not fit adequately and a squirrel managed to undo it and dive headfirst into the seed. However, after fitting some wire over the lid and attaching the wire to the frame the squirrel can’t open it. It could do with sturdy clips to hold the lid on tightly. The small birds just love it and we have many more visiting our garden now the jackdaws and pigeons can’t eat all the seed we put out on our conventional bird table. The large birds are now eating any seed that drops down on the grass so everyone is happy.

Completely foxed the squirrels!! For that I give it the 5 stars. The only weak point is the shoddy clasps. I had to re-jig them both with pliers. BUT it was worth that, just to keep the tree rats way!

Bought this to stop the starlings scoffing everything!
It arrived promptly, was packaged well.
It’s a little expensive but worth the extra as it’s stronger and better made than a cheaper one I had also purchased.
Liked it so much, I bought a second one.
The smaller birds get their food in peace now.

Excellent took the wee birds a day to figure it out and then led by our resident robin they flock to it and they can empty it in a matter of hours
Well made and sturdy and keeps the crows away which as we live in the country can be a plague

Had the bird seed feeder up for 3 days now and I am really pleased with it, keeping the flocks of Jackdaws from robbing the smaller birds which have no problems feeding from it.Also the resident squirrel has departed to easier neighbours feeders. The Gaudman heavy duty feeder is sturdy and well made and money well spent.

We don’t have squirrels but have lots of crows that eat or spill the seed from ‘normal’ feeders. I had hoped this feeder would prevent the crows eating all the seed before the smaller birds got any. I don’t know if this feeder is squirrel proof, but I do know it doesn’t stop the crows eating all the seed. They just hang on the frame and reach the seed. The saddest part though is that when there are no crows around, our small birds seem too stupid to work out how to reach the seed. I can’t blame the feeder for that! I fixed a couple of protruding canes to give the small birds something to land on, which seemed to help them, until the crows discovered them and seemed grateful that I had made life even easier for them! I have removed the canes now and am waiting to see if the small birds figure it out.

Wanted to stop larger birds from taking all the food and bothering the smaller birds. After reading the reviews decided to try this one and amazingly – it works!!! It’s great to see the starlings try to fathom out why the smaller birds can get in and feed and they can’t. Took a few days but they eventually got the message that they couldn’t get at the food so they are very few and far between now. There is the odd determined few but they soon go away when they can’t get at the food. If you want to deter bigger birds then this is the one to go for.

Bought to deter starlings, now all small birds can feed in my garden whenever they wish. Seeing a starling attempt to feed from this feeder and give up within minutes indicates that they are aware of effort and reward. It’s not that I dislike starlings in particular, it’s more that bullies are not my cup of tea. The feeder itself is robust and antibacterially treated, disassembly for periodically cleaning is by a twist method – it requires attention so read the leaflet – the benefit of which is no messing around with small nuts and bolts. Having bought other feeders that claimed to deter starlings but did not I am happy to have finally found this one. Buy with confidence if you prefer to feed smaller birds and enjoy their birdsong.

Pesky squirrel, perplexed, confused…so far so good..Great value for money..probably the best squirrel proof feeder I’ve tried.. wasted a fair bit of dosh in pursuit of defeating a pair of grey squirrels.

I have ended up putting suet pellets (normal size) into this feeder and it is the most visited in my garden.

I don’t get squirrels, but bought it to ensure that sparrows, blue tits and the like had their share of food. The bars block starlings (even large groups) and anything bigger. It’s very solid and birds have no problems getting in and out.

My only complaint (apart from the price) is that the lid doesn’t close quite correctly. It should slot into place then lock with a small rotation – however I cannot get it to rotate. In practice this is irrelevant though, because I’ve had armies of starlings attacking it with no impact.

The only thing I have seen a particularly persistent starling do is to manage to poke free one of the suet pellets from within with the tip of its beak.

  26. Joe Donovan says:

This feeder is great! I have had problems with a greedy gang of clever starlings who eat all the food and leaving the smaller birds with nothing. I have tried a couple of feeders with cages with no success but this one is too wide for them to get their beaks into. They have tried their best! I still feed them separately but this feeder prevents them from raiding it and allows the small birds to get their share. Little birds seem to feel safe in the cage. It is easy to clean and the feed has not got wet so far.

Product appears to be well manufactured and has the capability of being cleaned something I wanted primarily. Certainly keeps the squirrels out, I have some really aggressive individuals in my garden which destroyed my original feeder.
The next one I brought was good at keeping squirrels away but had build up of uneaten food that went mouldy.
Looking into this the birds can potentially get a very nasty virus as a consequence. hence my third purchase
I would say that I found it 1/3 off at my local garden centre after I brought it compared to the Amazon price which is unusual in my experience.

All my bird food was being tipped on the floor or gobbled up by starlings, pigeon and jackdaw. I bought this to give the smaller birds a chance at a constant food supply. It’s super sturdy so doesn’t blow around in the wind, larger birds can’t access the food. Easy to add food from the top. Built to last. Am now considering the same design for nuts and suet ball feeders

  39. StefanLxfhe says:

Bought this to deter starlings, jays etc. and now been in use for a few months Tried one of the smaller diameter versions but the greedy big birds could still reach the seed. Not with this one – now they are reduced to searching the ground underneath for odd seeds dropped by the smaller birds which didn’t get a look-in before. It took about 4 hours for the smaller birds to get used to it and about a week before the big birds gave up trying. A bit more difficult to clean purely because it’s so big.
No idea if it’s effective against squirrels as it hangs from a feeding station and I use a perspex dome to stop them climbing the pole

I was impressed with this feeder in terms of the strength of the cage, the bird perches and the internal seed container. It is robust. I guess you could argue that it would be better with a screw on lid as opposed to the slot and turn method. However, after a couple of weeks in use my squirrels have not yet been able to open the lid – so it seems to do the job.

We already have a home-made squirrel guard on our sunflower-heart feeder. As it’s a 2″ mesh made of strong plastic, we thought it would do. The little birds manage okay with it but the local squirrel has bitten through the mesh in several places and makes free with the bird food. Finally I decided to go for a metal one, and a good strong one at that. The feeder is simple to fill and clean, and the little birds began to come to it immediately. We’re very pleased with it.

Some months of use now and the squirrels have given up trying. Does mean only the smaller birds get a look in, but with other feeders the squirrels dominated the feeders anyway. Great feeder. Lots of birds feeding from it in short period of time. Easy to clean and fill.
However this is meant to be a durable feeder yet I’ve already noticed the beginnings of rust forming on the lid. This is unexpected and disappointing after less that 5 weeks in use. This makes it much less good value for money.

Very pleased with this bird feeder. It is a good heavy weight, very sturdy and comes apart to clean easily. I can’t say about it being squirrel proof as I’m not plagued with them, but it certainly stops the jackdaws , crows and starlings.

The only issue with this was the fit of the lid it did not sit and turn to lock needed to be forced. I bought this because I was fed up with starlings mobbing all my previous feeders and emptying them in an hour or so scattering meal worms everywhere. This has foxed most of the starlings who initially swarmed it but they cannot reach form outside the cage…one determined one got in and soon forced its way out. Big success and the smaller blue tits, finches etc can feed in peace unbullied.

The squirrels who visit my garden are experts at destroying ‘squirrel proof’ bird feeders – I have many to prove it.
This one contains a good quantity so my three do not all need filling every day. It is the easiest one i have found to refill and to clean. The ‘dome’ shape at bottom means I don’t have wet seeds collecting, rotting and growing inside a difficult to clean ‘tube’ seed holder.
This seems expensive but the money saved in the long run is worth every penny and pound hence me having three.

The bird feeder arrived on time and looks solid and well built. It was easy to assemble and fill with seeds, although you should be careful to ensure the lid is correctly fitted. The main aim for buying this style of feeder was to deter pigeons from eating all the food and so leaving nothing for the smaller birds. Straightaway the pigeons no longer eat the seeds, they cannot reach the food through the bars. The smaller birds, tits and robins, are somewhat cautious of the new feeder, but hopefully will return as they become braver.

Placing this birdfeeder into our garden was an excellent idea. In this involuntary imprisonment period, little things can bring you lots of joy. I installed it at the very beginning of the new year and after a couple of days, it has been discovered. Blue tits and robins now regularly visit, several at a time, shoving gracefully their gratitude for the provision of a tasty meal. In addition, it attracts jay birds, magpies, large pigeons, parakeets and squirrels, none of which can get to any food, but pick seeds that have been dropped to the ground. If you like animals, you would love the sight of all this wilderness visiting your garden, providing our family with a great start to the year.

Bought this to replace a similar product. It is well made and sturdy and definitely squirrel proof. The birds have started using it immediately. Only draw back is that it can be difficult to clean, especially if you use the no mess type mix of bird food as this can go mouldy a clog the bottom. My local squirrel has mastered how to get inside. I’ve not seen how he does it but many mornings , I find he has managed to get the top off. I’ve tried various tactics to stop him eating the birds seeds, but he has managed to foil me so far. I’ve not given up yet. He manages to get the top off once by chewing through a branch of the apple tree where the bird feeder was positioned. The bird feeder fell to the ground which made it easier for him to open the top . The latest attempt to stop him getting in the feeder is to cover the feeder and the branch, with a sticky tape, with the idea that he may not like having to cross the sticky tape to get to the feeder. So far, it seems to have worked.
The bird feeder is a made of robust steel and I’d have thought it would keep the squirrels out. How it manages to loosen the top is beyond me. Any ideas or similar experiences, would be interesting.

    Updating my earlier review –

Good news – attractively priced compared to competitors and does prevent access by the squirrels.

Bad news – dismantling for cleaning is a struggle, but achievable with persistence. More serious is the lack of drainage holes in the base, which leads to the bottom of the feeder clogging up when it rains. Easily remedied by drilling the necessary holes, but an unnecessary design fault.

Not very well made (lid comes loose quite easily) but it does keep squirrels at bay. Parakeets can get the odd nut but generally can’t be bothered. Gaps too small for robins? Only see tits and finches using it. Overall, quite good

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI have 3 gardman feeders now and i’m really pleased with them. Because the lid is quite large it assists in adding some protection from the weather and for fhe price in comparion to other guardin feeders, National trust and Tom chambers , these are great value. They have a coating on them also which protects them from mold and passing disease to the birds. Within minutes of hanging these in the tree the blue tits and and goldfinch were in enjoying a feast, and the starlings can no longer gain access. very happy.

Have high hopes for this feeder. To date, a dozen squirrels have been stealing the seeds and demolishing feeders. After reading the reviews I purchased this feeder more in hope than expectation. Taking the tip from a reviewer who tied the lid in place, I did this before installing the feeder.
Day 1. Very pleased to see a Great Tit dart in and out. A squirrel tried its luck but quickly gave up, despite the acrobatics. It was late in the day so I did not expect too much activity.
Day 2. The regular great tit visitors feeding happily from the new feeder throughout the day. The large group of squirrels kept checking it out one by one and tried hard to find a way in. All gave up except one feisty determined guy who tried fervently to get the top off and chewed through the raffia tie but did not succeed removing the lid. I secured the lid with entwined pipe cleaners that I use for plants. The squirrel then tried attacking the underside of the feeder but eventually gave up.
Now hopeful that the squirrels have been defeated and that this strong feeder will survive.
Update: Very happy. This sturdy and well-made feeder has proved totally squirrel proof and has proved a successful feeder for the small birds. The numerous squirrels seem to have moved on and just two young squirrels visit from time to time, but have not been able to damage or penetrate this feeder. This feeder has exceeded my expectations and I am very happy. It was well worth paying a bit extra to resolve what was a frustrating and expensive problem.

I’ve had so many different feeders over the years but this is by far the best. It’s so easy to clean and very sturdy and we’ll made.

This feeder has given me hours of pleasure watching the squirrels finally accept defeat and conclude it is indeed squirrel proof (I wired on the lid as recommended by others).
All the small birds use it happily apart from one particularly stupid great tit (I assume it’s the same one) that tries to get at the seed through the clear plastic container instead of the feeding ports.

The cage is far enough away from the centre to deter starlings and other big birds. This results in less mess (especially if used with no mess bird seed). The squirrel gave up as well (although I did have to wire the lid on).

This is perfect to prevent squirrels getting into the bird food. We have sat and watched the squirrels attempting to access the sunflower seeds, and it has held up to all the very clever attempts.

Took a while to use and they are still a bit wary, but more birds do use now especially if my other feeder is nearly empty. Do think that the gaps should be a little larger as some birds have difficulty getting in and out.

This year i seemed to have a large number of Starlings or as i call them Locusts as they wouls swoop down and raid my other hanging feeders leaving nothing for the smaller birds.
If you have the same problem then this feeder is for you, i read a few reviews and thought finally a feeder that stops the Starlings.
It is heavy duty and well made and what makes it work is that the outter cage around the feeder is further away from the tube feeder inside and also the gap between the cage bars is a bit closer together unlike my other feeders.
It is quite big i did not notice the dimensions of the feeder, but i am happy it has stopped the Starlings and the small birds are happily using it, although it has taken them a few days to get used to it which they have now.
I can highly recommend this feeder.

This feeder is very good value. It is easy to fill, and the lid fits very securely, and is easy to remove and replace. It also holds a good amount of seed.
