    Superb quality
Quality product. Took the birds about a month until they made full use of this feeder. No more starlings thank goodness.

    It worked!
Bought this to deter squirrels from eating all my bird food on a regular basis and it’s worked! I observed one cheeky squirrel having a good look at it and trying to get to the food from every angle, eventually it gave up and hasn’t been seen since. The small birds use the feeder easily. Highly recommend.

    Nice small bird feede
Very nice for small birds and has attracted blue tits and robins. Only takes seed so I would like to find another which takes fat balls. The pigeons and squirrels are unable to get to the seed. Good price, I do recommend it.

Works a treat. The birds love it and the squirrels can’t reach inside or tear it to pieces!

Took the birds a little while to work it out, but now they’re using it regularly. Keeps the damn Squirrels off so all is good.

    Excellent produc
We already have a home-made squirrel guard on our sunflower-heart feeder. As it’s a 2″ mesh made of strong plastic, we thought it would do. The little birds manage okay with it but the local squirrel has bitten through the mesh in several places and makes free with the bird food. Finally I decided to go for a metal one, and a good strong one at that. The feeder is simple to fill and clean, and the little birds began to come to it immediately. We’re very pleased with it.

    Squirrel proof feede
Currently the squirrels have not managed to get in. So it’s working. Very economical with seeds as the larger birds can’t access. (I have a separate feeder for larger birds like starlings, jackdaws and magpies. )

It attracts the smaller birds because they feel safe.
When I first received the bird feeder, I was concerned that the birds couldn’t get to the seed, but after 2 weeks the blue tits were feeding from it, it took the sparrows a long time to work out how to get to the seed, but they got there in the end. Finally I saw a robin using it, and they usually prefer to eat seed that has been put out for them.
    It’s really smart too.

    It really is squirrel proof
Some months of use now and the squirrels have given up trying. Does mean only the smaller birds get a look in, but with other feeders the squirrels dominated the feeders anyway. The robins have now worked out how to land on the outer cage and get access. Excellent quality. Very pleased with the purchase. Have both seed and nut feeders and the both work really well.

Great design except tendency to rus
Great feeder. Lots of birds feeding from it in short period of time. Easy to clean and fill.
However this is meant to be a durable feeder yet I’ve already noticed the beginnings of rust forming on the lid. This is unexpected and disappointing after less that 5 weeks in use. This makes it much less good value for money.

Large birds and squirrels are unable to access food, so small birds can happily feed undeterred.

Well designed. A sturdy and practical option - should last the test of time.
Due to the large twist off lid it is easy to open and refill, also the large hanging handle makes it possible to hook on stand without losing any seeds out of the feeder.

    Starling proof feede
Bought to keep starlings away from small bird food and is perfect.
The only problem with this item is the top comes off too easily so I had to drill a small hole and put a self tapping screw in.
If it wasn’t for the lid issue it would get 5 stars all the way.
    Very happy with purchase

Well made and so far has deterred starlings
The only issue with this was the fit of the lid it did not sit and turn to lock needed to be forced. I bought this because I was fed up with starlings mobbing all my previous feeders and emptying them in an hour or so scattering meal worms everywhere. This has foxed most of the starlings who initially swarmed it but they cannot reach form outside the cage…one determined one got in and soon forced its way out. Big success and the smaller blue tits, finches etc can feed in peace unbullied.

Very pleased with this bird feeder. It is a good heavy weight, very sturdy and comes apart to clean easily. I can’t say about it being squirrel proof as I’m not plagued with them, but it certainly stops the jackdaws , crows and starlings.

Well worth every penny as saves pounds.
The squirrels who visit my garden are experts at destroying ‘squirrel proof’ bird feeders – I have many to prove it.
This one contains a good quantity so my three do not all need filling every day. It is the easiest one i have found to refill and to clean. The ‘dome’ shape at bottom means I don’t have wet seeds collecting, rotting and growing inside a difficult to clean ‘tube’ seed holder.
This seems expensive but the money saved in the long run is worth every penny and pound hence me having three.

It took no time at all after I’d filled and put the feeder in the tree for the birds to find it and come and take peanuts and they have not stopped! It is a great success and completely squirrel proof.

    Good to deter large birds
The bird feeder arrived on time and looks solid and well built. It was easy to assemble and fill with seeds, although you should be careful to ensure the lid is correctly fitted. The main aim for buying this style of feeder was to deter pigeons from eating all the food and so leaving nothing for the smaller birds. Straightaway the pigeons no longer eat the seeds, they cannot reach the food through the bars. The smaller birds, tits and robins, are somewhat cautious of the new feeder, but hopefully will return as they become braver.

    Attenborough in our own garde
Placing this birdfeeder into our garden was an excellent idea. In this involuntary imprisonment period, little things can bring you lots of joy. I installed it at the very beginning of the new year and after a couple of days, it has been discovered. Blue tits and robins now regularly visit, several at a time, shoving gracefully their gratitude for the provision of a tasty meal. In addition, it attracts jay birds, magpies, large pigeons, parakeets and squirrels, none of which can get to any food, but pick seeds that have been dropped to the ground. If you like animals, you would love the sight of all this wilderness visiting your garden, providing our family with a great start to the year.

Bought this to replace a similar product. It is well made and sturdy and definitely squirrel proof. The birds have started using it immediately. Only draw back is that it can be difficult to clean, especially if you use the no mess type mix of bird food as this can go mouldy a clog the bottom. Prefer to use sunflower seeds, peanut nibs and mealworm. It’s quite expensive but worth it in the long run.

Good solid feeder — squirrel-proof cage really is just that, with gaps too small to get their heads through and anyway keeping them too far from the feeder to do any damage.

My local squirrel has mastered how to get into inside.
My local squirrel has mastered how to get inside. I’ve not seen how he does it but many mornings , I find he has managed to get the top off. I’ve tried various tactics to stop him eating the birds seeds, but he has managed to foil me so far. I’ve not given up yet. He manages to get the top off once by chewing through a branch of the apple tree where the bird feeder was positioned. The bird feeder fell to the ground which made it easier for him to open the top . The latest attempt to stop him getting in the feeder is to cover the feeder and the branch, with a sticky tape, with the idea that he may not like having to cross the sticky tape to get to the feeder. So far, it seems to have worked.
The bird feeder is a made of robust steel and I’d have thought it would keep the squirrels out. How it manages to loosen the top is beyond me. Any ideas or similar experiences, would be interesting.

Nothing to dislike. Excellent build. Time will tell if the coating lasts, as most items seem too peel quickly these days. Well pleased so far.

    Effective squirrel repelle
I have nothing against squirrels, but the birds weren’t getting a look in with my previous ‘open’ feeder. This allows only small garden birds to enter and feed. Feels good quality. Minor complaint is that food silo a bit small, I need to refill quite often. Would prefer if it were larger and meant less times filling up.

Good News and Bad News - an update
    Updating my earlier review –

Good news – attractively priced compared to competitors and does prevent access by the squirrels.

Bad news – dismantling for cleaning is a struggle, but achievable with persistence. More serious is the lack of drainage holes in the base, which leads to the bottom of the feeder clogging up when it rains. Easily remedied by drilling the necessary holes, but an unnecessary design fault.

    Keeps squirrels ou
Not very well made (lid comes loose quite easily) but it does keep squirrels at bay. Parakeets can get the odd nut but generally can’t be bothered. Gaps too small for robins? Only see tits and finches using it. Overall, quite good

    Very good value and effective
This is working well. I’ve hung the feeder on a small tree — it’s reasonably heavy but I’ve managed to find a strong branch for it – and the blue tits seem to love it, spending much more time eating than they do from the more open feeders I have. The squirrels cannot get in but they benefit from the seed that the birds drop. We are all very happy.

Fiddley to start with regarding the outer lid as the part where it clips in needed straightening with a pair of pliers.

I have 3 gardman feeders now and i’m really pleased with them. Because the lid is quite large it assists in adding some protection from the weather and for fhe price in comparion to other guardin feeders, National trust and Tom chambers , these are great value. Within minutes of hanging these in the tree the blue tits and and goldfinch were in enjoying a feast, and the starlings can no longer gain access. very happy.

    Squirrel Proof!
Have high hopes for this feeder. To date, a dozen squirrels have been stealing the seeds and demolishing feeders. After reading the reviews I purchased this feeder more in hope than expectation. Taking the tip from a reviewer who tied the lid in place, I did this before installing the feeder.
Day 1. Very pleased to see a Great Tit dart in and out. A squirrel tried its luck but quickly gave up, despite the acrobatics. It was late in the day so I did not expect too much activity.
Day 2. The regular great tit visitors feeding happily from the new feeder throughout the day. The large group of squirrels kept checking it out one by one and tried hard to find a way in. All gave up except one feisty determined guy who tried fervently to get the top off and chewed through the raffia tie but did not succeed removing the lid. I secured the lid with entwined pipe cleaners that I use for plants. The squirrel then tried attacking the underside of the feeder but eventually gave up.
Now hopeful that the squirrels have been defeated and that this strong feeder will survive.
Update: Very happy. This sturdy and well-made feeder has proved totally squirrel proof and has proved a successful feeder for the small birds. The numerous squirrels seem to have moved on and just two young squirrels visit from time to time, but have not been able to damage or penetrate this feeder. This feeder has exceeded my expectations and I am very happy. It was well worth paying a bit extra to resolve what was a frustrating and expensive problem.

This feeder has given me hours of pleasure watching the squirrels finally accept defeat and conclude it is indeed squirrel proof (I wired on the lid as recommended by others).

Cage distance from feeder is ideal.
The cage is far enough away from the centre to deter starlings and other big birds. This results in less mess (especially if used with no mess bird seed). The squirrel gave up as well (although I did have to wire the lid on).

If you have problems with Starlings raiding your hanging feeders, this the the feeder for you.
This year i seemed to have a large number of Starlings or as i call them Locusts as they wouls swoop down and raid my other hanging feeders leaving nothing for the smaller birds.
If you have the same problem then this feeder is for you, i read a few reviews and thought finally a feeder that stops the Starlings.
It is heavy duty and well made and what makes it work is that the outter cage around the feeder is further away from the tube feeder inside and also the gap between the cage bars is a bit closer together unlike my other feeders.
It is quite big i did not notice the dimensions of the feeder, but i am happy it has stopped the Starlings and the small birds are happily using it, although it has taken them a few days to get used to it which they have now.
I can highly recommend this feeder.

I bought this as had a problem with a flock of ASBO starlings decimating the feeder within minutes of filling it. Some of the younger, slender Starlings cab still reach through it has made it a lot more difficult so they are stealing less.
Easy to fill and clean. Very happy with purchase.

Squirrel proof, Starling proof too, and used by many goldfinches, blue tits and coal tits
Love it, just love it. Starlings and Squirrels have no chance and the small garden birds get all the seeds.
    Quality build, quality product.
August 2020 and the lots of young newly hatched Gold Finches and various tits have now been using it to, watched by their parents and us. #Bargai

Guerdman Heavy Duty Squirrel proof feede
We invested in this item in order to stop the squirrels pinching all our bird food. We found it worked well, and were delighted to see how the two young squirrels returned to their dray, with very disappointed expressions. Then we softened and put out some peanuts especially for them. Meanwhile the birds loved the new feeder , no problem with the perches as other purchasers have mentioned. The birds were in straightaway, and demolished the sunflower seeds in record time! All in all a very good purchase. However we did find the lid just a bit tricky, occasionally causing a collapse of the whole thing from its hook. It seems just a bit too easy for the lid to come off, and the metal rim screws the other way, which is difficult to align sometimes.

    Super!
This is a good design for smaller birds , I already had a similar peanut feeder and liked it so decided to buy this one for seeds. We don’t have squirrels in our area but this is great if you want to encourage small birds and keep the larger ones from stealing all the goodies.Easy to dismantle for cleaning too.

    Good Quality
Has managed to stop squirrels and determined crows getting the bird seed. Good quality build and very easy to top up. My cunning use of a keyring splitring stops the crows from lifting the feeder up and dropping it on the ground. Ha ha ha.

Squirrel proof bird feeder (so far!)
Bit overpriced but the quality is good and seems sturdy too. Squirrels have chewed our regular seed dispensers so we wanted a deterrent and got it. Smaller birds are getting used to it and the seed is kept dry and with it having 4 perches, all the new fledglings can go in too. Worth the wait for the stock.

    Best feeder ever!!
This review is for the Gardman heavy duty squirrel proof seed bird feeder. No squirrels in our garden but we have been plagued by flocks of starlings, which descended on the feeders and cleared all the feed in half an hour. So no garden birds as there was never anything left. This feeder is well constructed, sturdy and easy to clean. It has a large canopy top which keeps the seed dry even in wet weather. Best of all the protective cage has such a large diameter that the starlings cannot reach the food however hard they try to stretch and strain through the bars. After a while they just give up and fly away to rob a feeder elsewhere. The garden birds are small enough to hop straight through.

    Beautiful and practical
Looks good in the garden. And with 4 opportunities for birds to feed it’s a great bird feeder.
I wish I could afford to have a garden full of these.

    Well made and starling proof!
This is a really well made, heavy duty bird feeder. With previous feeders we were getting inundated with starlings, even with feeders that were supposed to keep such birds off. This new feeder has definitely done the trick and the little birds were on it literally within minutes of us putting the feeder up. It also takes two cupfulls of feed at a time, so there’s no need to top the feeder up during the day.

    Happy apart from lid!
Sturdy product, birds love it, luckily the squirrels can’t get to the seeds – star lost due to the loose lid; we have had to put extra wire round it to stop those clever creatures opening it up!

    Caged bird feede
As soon as my bird feeder arrived I was straight in the garden filling it up with all sorts of birdie treats, nuts dried worms, seeds, fruit pellets etc. Thought it would take the birds a few days to get used to it but no, within a couple of minutes a little great tit arrived, tried a couple of times but soon worked it out, followed by his little friend and then a robin used it. Very exciting day sitting in the beautiful sunshine watching the songbirds come and go. What I especially love about it is the long wide handle which goes over numerous branches stopping it from falling off the tree and how easy it was to fill and none of the seeds poured out when filling. I have tried many different bird feeders in the past but this is my favourite by far – good value for money.

    Great value for money!
Squirrels have made several attempts to get at the contents and have failed every time. The bird feeder withstands their teeth, as well as their intelligence. I had concerns that the locking mechanism for the lid was not strong enough to keep the squirrels out, but it must be good enough, three months on and it hasn’t failed. The design to break the feeder down to clean, is the best I have found so far. Very simple and no tools required! The feeder is a good size, larger than a standard feeder, which means that I do not have to fill it more than once a day.

Excellent 'Easy to Clean' bird feede
This substantially made bird feeder is the first I have experienced that comes apart easily making cleaning thorough, and is equally easy to reassemble. Also, the substantial cover helps to avoid rain saturation, largely preventing the clogging of the seed which assists the easy flow of the food as it is consumed.

    Seed feede
I bought this as my previous feeders were being depleted by magpies and parakeets, which were preventing tits and other smaller birds getting a look in. The cage on this feeder is sufficiently wide to prevent the larger birds reaching the seeds and they have now lost interest.

It’s well made, sturdy and whilst not a thing of beauty, does the job. And the little birds seem delighted.

    Rain and wind proof.
Keeps the starlings away and lets the small birds feed in peace. The only problem is that I think my robins must be to fat as it’s full of mealworms and that is one of their favourites.

Does not stop parakeets unless worked o
I bought this as yet another attempt to stop parakeets taking over my garden but they managed within 5 minutes to work out that if directly in front of the seed tray they could stretch their necks through the cage and reach the seeds. I have now put a line of plastic garden wire diagonally across the gaps in the cage around each of the gaps closest to the four seed trays and that seems to have stopped the parakeets for now. It also confuses some of the smaller birds but not all and many are working out how to enter and leave through the rest of the cage. The squirrels have not yet had a go at getting the seeds but I think the wire should deter them as well.

    Sturdy bird feede
The Gardman Bird feeder has proved to be an excellent purchase. It deterred squirrels. The cover proved very useful for keeping the seeds dry. The feeder encouraged the small birds to feed in the worst of weather conditions. It was easy to refill. Overall it has proved to be a superb produc

    Tried most...
I’ve had one of these feeders for fat balls for some time and noticed that the squirrels couldn’t gain access to it, so I decided to try one for sunflower seeds as well. Having tried several different, so-called squirrel-proof feeders, this is the only one that has worked successfully. It’s also easy to fill, just remove the top lid and fill, so quick and easy. And it will be easy to keep clean too, when necessary.

    Great product, defies squirrels
We wanted a solid product which would both defeat and annoy the clever squirrels we have in our garden. It took the birds a while to get used to it, but all ok now and the squirrels are confused! Thank you, defeating these guys is not easy!

This feeder is great and if you adapt the lid to really deter the clever little squirrel pests would give it five stars

    Take that squirrel!
It has been in situ now for approx 2 weeks.I have observed a number of squirrels try to eat the enclosed seed but invariably without success.Job well done. Also ,as a side effect, the large birds i.e.collar doves and wood pigeons cannot get to the seed with the result that much less is being eaten Result!!!

    Excellent feeders!
I have previously bought cheap feeders for my sunflower hearts but they have been difficult to clean and destroyed in the end by squirrels. The squirrel had a half hearted attempt at sunflower theft from this but didn’t hand around and went back to other more squirrel friendly feeders I have left around to allow the birds a look in!
These are very easy to clean and appear well designed and sturdy. My brother recommended them to me as he has Olympic squirrels and he won’t buy anything else!!

    An excellent buy
I bought this to deter the many starlings that descend upon our garden and chase the smaller birds away and it works. They have given up. The cage, as I call it, is wide enough that the starlings cannot get their beaks in to reach the food. Only the little birds can get in. I have just ordered the fat ball version of this as I bought a cheaper version for the fat balls, but the cage is not as wide, so the starlings were able to reach the balls. You get what you pay for. I also ordered this on a Wednesday and it arrived on the Friday morning of the same week.

    Satisfactory Purchase
Delivered on time – well wrapped- good weight. Purchased at Christmas to use in garden therefore unable to comment on long term use. However, the garden birds have taken to use feeder and seem confident with it.

    Good service
This is the 2nd one of these I’ve bought. And if I had really read the instructions on how to clean then I am sure the first one would have lasted longer than 5+ years. Did what we wanted, kept out squirrels and jackdaws but let in the small birds. The bits they drop bring in ground feeders which is a bonus.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWell made product, good price, but you'll need to add a bit of wire to make it squirrel proof.
This is a really well made and finished product. But it has not been thought out well enough to be 5 stars. The problem is, as built, it is not squirrel proof, which is supposed to be it’s unique selling point. However, I wouldn’t let this put you off if considering buying. As built it takes a squirrel about 10 seconds to discover how to open the simple and slack half centimetre twist lid. The solution I have used is to loop a piece of sturdy garden wire over the lid, it is twisted once round the lid handle and though the top of the cage and secured with ends twisted together. It may sound a little complicated but only takes me a few seconds to remove the lid for refilling seed and has most definitely foxed the squirrels. I would think the manufacturer could resolve this fault very quickly, but even as it is I would recommend to anybody , I may just get another myself !
