I had an older model of this router brand that stopped working after a software upgrade. It refused to connect to my home VPN. Before the upgrade it worked perfectly. I struggled with it for weeks before I gave up and decided it must be a faulty unit. So i ordered this more expensive unit hoping to have better luck. Same problem. The VPN connection froze with an ABORT button with no further help in the GUI.

I will try to dig into the LUCI interface to troubleshoot, but I’m on my own. Don’t expect using this router for VPN to be easy.

UPDATE: My email to customer support was answered and my issue was resolved. I am very thankful for the assistance, but the silent failure of the router with no meaningful error, status, or assistance is still a big problem in my opinion.

I had a work-mate recommend this to me, and jumped on getting one from Amazon. I did a quick internet search, and although not the cheapest option, it was the best option for me at the time.
It was delivered super quick and efficiently.
Setting it up was a little more challenging. One of the reasons I got the Beryl was because of ‘poor internet’ performance at the hotel I was at. So, hooking it up to a poor performing wireless network, was a challenge to begin with.

I eventually got it set up, but as with anything, I went poking around under the hood. I changed the setting over to a ‘Extension’ and then lost all connection with the router at 192.168.8.1

It took a lot of re-starts and mucking around to really get this router set up correctly. After watching UT videos and the like…

I ended up getting it set up via a cable connection at the hotel. So, it did serve a great purpose to now have my ‘own’ wi-fi in the hotel. All devices connect to it no probs… and I even managed to get my VPN service up and running…. again…. configuring everything took a few goes… you need to have your IT ‘wits’ about you. There are .zip files you have to find, download and un-pack, to make it all work. Depending which VPN service you go with.

This is my ‘first’ use of it in a hotel… I’ll have to wait and see how it all works out in the future. Overall, satisfied with what it does so far.

We just returned from a Great American Southwest road trip that involved stays in two Airbnbs and hotel chains including Hyatt, Marriott, Best Western, Loews, and others. Eleven different places total, over 25 nights. Having to set up the hotel wifi anew on two iPhones, two iPads, two Macbooks, the Roku, and more at every location would have been a real headache. With the Beryl, almost all of that pain went away, and we could Airplay from any device to the Roku, as well. It quickly became the first thing unpacked and the last thing packed at each stay.

It is a little bigger than some other options but the performance and range were well worth it, IMO. One of our Airbnb choices was quite large. Once we’d located the Beryl within 40 feet of the property’s DSL router, we had streaming-capable WiFi everywhere, even out by the pool. I like the USB-C power supply. The whole thing seems quite sturdy and held up perfectly.

One small note – I had no luck with my evil plan to put 512Gb of old movies on a micro-SD card and play them off the Beryl as I could not find a supported file format that would do the job. However, since the Beryl does enable the use of Airplay in hotel settings, there would be other ways to get that job done.

Also it could probably be easier to get that ubiquitous hotel wifi login/upsell screen to pop up. Most of the time I could just paste the upstream router’s IP address, which the Beryl reports quite obviously, into a browser and get what I wanted, but sometimes it was necessary to jiggle various handles. I never outright failed at it, but sometimes it took a few minutes and occasionally I wound up succeeding without knowing how. While I certainly can’t blame GL.iNet for that, the UI could maybe take some mystery out of it or provide some things to try. This could be a competitive differentiator, IMO.

In any event, nice work, GL.iNet! Don’t road trip without one!

This is a well-designed little “travel” router. I am particularly impressed by its 5GHz signal, which appears to provide higher bandwidth than my aging, full-sized ASUS RT-AC87 home router. I also like the Gort-like indicator light on the front.

It does get rather warm, though, and it lacks the I/O throughput of a full-sized router. I currently work with streaming HD video, and when I put this router in place of an ASUS RT-N56U, the video I streamed through it was noticeably choppy and unwatchable. Putting the RT-N56U back in place cleared up the streaming instantly. Disappointing, as I was hoping to use this one with the better WiFi signal instead. I’ve deducted a star for this wired performance issue.

I have some of GL.iNet’s older products and love them, but for a recent trip wanted to upgrade. The Beryl did everything I wanted it to do and did it very well. In this case, I was not able to use it with a hard-wired source, but that ended up working out better than I could have imagined. I had not planned on testing a wifi source to LAN. It worked very well.

I connected it to the hotel wifi (no hardline available in-room) and it worked great, but the hotel wifi was super weak. I called their tech support and they saw that the hotel had cut bandwidth due to covid, but with a fully booked hotel due to local events, had not reverted to a reasonable level of service. The support tech bypassed throttling and whitelisted the router MAC, and I immediately went from 1-2Mbps in/out to 750Mb/s in/out. This bandwidth held for the entire week, holding 750 during busy times and 950 in / 1050 out when the hotel was less populated.

I was able to configure VPN easily, the service range was excellent, and it ran perfectly for the whole week with only one power-cycle when I had to power all of my gear down to reconfigure my workspace.

OpenWRT 21.02.0 natively supports this model. It works great!

I’ve been using it permanently, 24/7/365, as a wifi bridge at home. No issues whatsoever – very low power consumption. I’ve opened it up and the heatsink design is really nice – very chunky, with thermal pads on the important chips. In very warm ambient temperatures (30C+) the case can get quite warm, so I keep it vertical which helps a lot with airflow and temperatures.

I am officially a GL-iNet fan! I now own 4 of their travel routers, and their products just keep getting better. Definitely feature packed, easy to set up, attractively packaged, and sturdy. Whilst the included “get started” cards could provide a little more guidance, any reasonably experienced novice should have no trouble getting started with this router quickly. I do wish it had more than one indicator light (I love the 3 LED’s on the slate). Aside from that one wish, I highly recommend this travel router for anyone needing privacy on the road (multiple VPN options and Tor are built into the software). Don’t let the “travel router” marketing fool you…this router is working great as a home router as well!

I can have this in my backpack running on a battery pack or from my laptop for more security and range. Decent Wifi signal is a constant problem almost everywhere. It has great broadcast range. Often I plug in somewhere in-between my work area and a nearby wifi source allowing me to work away from busier areas. Really easy to set up and has a quick GUI compared to others Ive tried.

Nice and easy to use travel router.

Only complaint is the VPN portion of it is a bit restrictive.
You can only use OpenVPN and it would be nice to have the option of using L2TP or PPTP for networks that aren’t OpenVPN compatible (in my case Meraki).

Handles my fire tv, laptop, 2 cell phones, ipad, furbo dog camera, and logitec camera with ease.
It was a bit difficult figuring out how to configure it and the company help files were not helpful. However a quick google search with the model # hotel captive portal led me to the information I needed.
Just save the information, because even after doing it once, you will need the instructions again since it is not intuitive hove to configure it even after you’ve done it once.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought the MT1300 to replace the AR750 which I already have. The latter I’ve been using as my main router for 18 months now. In fact I have two. They have workd fine, but I got the slightly larger 1300 as it has gigabyte ethernet ports and more streams on WiFi which means faster WiFi. It also has more memory allowing more processes to be installed.
The GUI on each is identical. It’s a proprietary GUI on top of the easily accessible open source OpenWrt Luci interface. This too works very well. The two GUIs have a lot of conguration options within the copious menus. It can do almost anything!!
The system is regularly updated, a fact which prompted my purchase……… Here’s how — I’m a born twiddler and in the course of my experiments I bricked the AR750. Very often, in electronics, computing & routers, especially, bricking a piece means the end. Not so with GL.iNet – they helpfully have instructions and a video of how to un-brick all of their routers! Their website has downloads for the latest firmware so all was not lost, in fact, I gained! Becuase while figuring it out I realised that they had this MT1300 (Beryl it’s called) which while still being a portable travel router is more powerful and faster than the AR750.
The extra speed I use for backing up to my NAS and also I use it as a PiHole server to keep adverts and malware from my system, by pointing the MT1300 at it.

I cannot stress how good both the AR750 & MT1300 actually are. The former was a lifesaver in France after the house got hit by lightning. It ran the whole guesthouse for months! I have used it during travel too, using my mobile as a hotspot to connect laptops through.
The UK version is also an EU version since the power supply has an interchangeable mains section. It’ll also run off any std USB power supply.
They both just run warm, not hot, though I prop them up to ensure adequate airflow. I have had 20 clients at times going through the AR750. The MT1300 is just for me and my gear, so not so many.

I have 3 screenshots. I call my current network Peas. I like to use vegetable names as SSIDs.

    1. How it appears in the various local networks using a WiFi scanner.
    2. The basic entry interface into the std GUI.
    3. The basic entry interface into OpenWrt Luci interface.

At the top of #2, the basic GUI, you can see the four options that the router can be setup. I have it connected to the house router through an ethernet cable. It keeps my personal network behind the house network. I have done the same elsewhere using it as a WiFi repeater. You lose some WiFi flexibility if you use this method after the initial setup if you want to move WiFi channel, for example. But that’s all. Blocking uPNP and setting DNS lookups are all totally accessible.

For #3, you’ll see that the OpenWrt version is 19. V20 came out this month (September 2021) but I haven’t updated it yet. V19 came out early 2021, so it’s good this is frequently updated.

Well that’s all for now. Everything you can do is actually in the manual. It, and the AR750, are some of the best value for money, configurable & reliable bits of electronics that I’ve had for years.
And they fit in a jeans pocket!!! (I don’t know why you’d want to do that of course, but it demonstrates their size.)

    Great bit of kit.

This worked fine once properly configured.
I used it in a hotel in the uk with a captive portal, and a 3-device per connection limit, (which I why I used it in the first place).
Vanilla setup was fine but the hotel also used a masked dns server – I needed to match that in the config in order for this to work and it took a fair bit of research to find that out.

Once up and running it worked perfectly.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersGreat travel router. I used it with Mullvad VPN because it is a commercial WireGuard Service provider, allowing you to use the WireGuard client that is built in. This configuration gives you the most throughput and the least latency. Other, more popular, VPN solutions weren’t nearly as fast as Mullvad using the WireGuard client. Also, you should note that the IP address of this device when you are setting it up is a weird one, 192.168.8.1. I’m an IT guy and naturally expected the 8 to be a 0. Once I read the manual a bit closer, I figured it out. Other than that, it is pretty straightforward to setup.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersEin Herzliches Hallo,

Bin sehr begeistert von diesem kleinen Edelstein & was OpenWRT hier leistet.

Vielen Dank an Euch (Support), fr Eure netten E-Mails.

    Sven H.

Works exactly as expected. Great wifi signal.
    Only cons I found :
    1. To config VPN have to download a file from your VPN provider and upload it to the device. The gateway is fixed into the file so everytime you want to switch gateways have to upload a new file. Not the simplest of you want to switch gateways (ie for different countries) regularly.
    2. The USB charger and cable is fixed single piece. Better if it came with a charger cable and separate USB-C cable like most cell phones.
    3. I only have one device and I suspect the much cheaper MT300 model might have suited me just fine. But then I would have had to carry a micro-USB charger cable as almost everything I have is USB-C.

Works with captive portal, even weird ones. I had to return 3 other routers that couldn’t get on my local public WIFI. It prompted me with a popup browser window during configuration, and once I went through the fairly convoluted process, it was online.
My TV, and other “smart” devices now can get online no problem. I had to download latest firmware for a couple to work with WPA2, and my Roku TV took a couple tries to recognize security settings.

The two little rabbit ears antenna work better than expected, good signal from a very remote WIFI, I expected to need an external antenna or repeater, but so far so good.

Streaming YouTube from two devices while writing this review on a public WIFI, so far no noticeable lag. We’ll see at 5pm when everybody is on.

Configuration was simple with good instructions.

Has USB port that will allow external Cell modem, or WIFI extender, or tethering. SO far I haven’t tried it, but it looks fairly easy if configuration works. Built in VPN support, another future try.

Very useful device for RV or Marine.

Excellent interface for a novice and optional advanced full OpenWRT menus. Some features are not compatible between interfaces but hey, it is amazing what this can do in such a small foot print. I am using it as I am living in shared accommodation at the moment with shared wifi. It connects to the wifi and I have then created a separate network for my devices. I have enabled openvpn client to privateVPN) and setup transmission-daemon and privoxy. I have a 4Tb USB HDU attached (ok this was tricky to get working and still have to plug in after boot). I removed Samba and installed Samba4 and everything is working very well.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI needed a low-cost travel router that supported OpenVPN. I find it ridiculous that military personnel are banned from some content because they get stationed overseas. Anyway, I embarked on a mission that allowed me to watch on AppleTv which unsurprisingly doesn’t support VPN on its own.

Someone at work has the GL.iNet Slate and highly recommended it. It’s super small, can plug into hotel CAT5 or through the hotel WiFi and supports OpenVPN. As I added it to my cart, seen the Beryl model and noticed that it has a newer WiFi card and supports faster speeds and better MIMO and opted for this newer model.

Been running it for a couple weeks now and these are my thoughts.

It’s much larger than the Slate, more like a standard WiFi router with smaller antennas and fewer ports, 3 vs. 9. It is however somewhat more transportable and will fit in one of my larger hard shell drive cases.

VPN is super stable, the extra CPU power that this has over the Slate is barely reaching 8% utilization and VPN runs constantly. Likewise, memory usage is minimal as well.

The Gl.iNet app vpn profiles does not sync up to the web portal, so if I create profiles on the portal, these profiles do not always display on the app. I like using the app because there’s this nice vpn interface that connects directly to my service provider. But can’t select by Fastest City or Fastest US. I can only choose country to connect and often times get a connection through Atlanta instead of Seattle.

VPN has a function that allows me to only allow designated MAC or IP to use connection, everything else is routed normally. Great feature!

Unable to change DHCP lease times. Not a big deal but supposed to help faster switchover from 2.4 to 5GHz when signal is 1bar.

WiFi signal is outstanding. The original could not transmit more than 20 feet before going out-actually bought a range extender to go from my apartment living room to master bathroom. It’s an apartment, distance isn’t that great.

Programmable side switch is configured to enable/disable vpn. I don’t think it works as intended. Can make connection regardless of how the switch is set; also since I’m using VPN filter, it kills the AppleTv internet so I was actually hoping that it would also disable the filter as well.

Overall, I’m very happy with this piece of equipment. It has high utility and works as advertised. No overheating issues, doesn’t seem impacted by the high humidity and for the $80 it costs it’s a darn good value!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this router for a recent work trip out of town. I wanted something that would connect to hotel wifi and have VPN capabilities. The GL-MT-1300 (beryl) did not disappoint!

Setup is super easy – it connects to hotel WiFi, including those with a captive portal (which is typical) without any pains or complicated setup. Once the VPN is setup (I use ExpressVPN), you can program the switch on the side to make it auto-connect to the VPN when it’s switched on.

I’ve been on Amazon for nearly 20 years and this is the first time I feel compelled to leave a review.

So many good things to note:

    – Small size and weight
    – Excellent design with customisable side button (meaning the router can auto-connect to VPN when switched on). Easy to set up customised VPN configurations.
    – Excellent and really easy-to-set-up functionality: works with compatible Huawei 4G internet dongle (literally plug in and it works), works with iPhone USB tethering (again, no configuration needed).
    – There is a ‘new’ app and it work brilliantly, giving control over the router’s functionality.
    – USB C powered, which is super convenient.
    – Supports LUCI if you want to get really technical (I used it to install a router-level adblocker, for example, and even that was really not complicated)

Granted, I did need to refer to some of the documentation online, which is really good.

Maybe I’m a year or two out of date, but I thought you had to buy a reasonably expensive brand-name router, risk flashing it with some open source firmware, and then hope things wouldn’t get too complicated to achieve the same results. Overall, this piece of kit is supremely good value and is really easy to use and travel with. It also looks so much better than some of the other rubbish on the market (is it just me, or do some companies intentionally design routers to look like killer robots?!).

The only negative I can think of, which for me I really don’t care about, is that sometimes, when changing settings on the admin panel, the WiFi will disconnect very briefly if you have another network saved on your device, meaning you have to reconnect to continue using the admin panel. But, for me it’s expected behaviour from a router like this, and I doubt it would happen if my device wasn’t so eager to switch to another saved network.

My use case is living on the road/relatively small spaces so it’s fine for my needs. Given the quality of this product, if I needed a ridiculously powerful WiFi signal or wanted to create a mesh network I would certainly still consider more powerful models from this company (I think they are working on/releasing WiFi 6 routers soon), and I’ll be keeping an eye on their future releases if I ever want to upgrade.

Works amazing, no issues whatsoever. VPN works brilliantly. I mainly bought this to hook up my 4G LTE usb stick and the router recognised it as LAN connection and now I have stronger mobile WIFI wherever I go. It can also work as a repeater. It looks cute and smart at the same time and has quite a lot of setting options to fiddle with if you’re looking for that. Otherwise, pretty reliable, not had issues so far, connection is strong.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI was a little hesitant at first since I needed this for a trip in a hotel and wasn’t sure if it would be able to authenticate to the hotel’s wifi that usually brings up a webpage. Let me tell you it works perfectly (hilton hotels) and much better than I expected. The setup was a breeze and the admin portal is pretty good. What I really like was that it showed all my clients and tracks the speed and overall traffic. At no point did the router needed me to re-authenticate. Overall I’m extremely happy with this purchase! It looks neat. It would be nice if there were some LEDs that blink showing traffic. Looking forward to what updates they bring via firmware.

My wife and I were traveling this past weekend, and we got this device for more security on hotel WiFi. It exceeded my expectations.

We used it as a proxy hotspot/firewall to to the hotel WiFi (I am using the wrong terminology – I think that gl.inet calls it “repeater” mode), and had it also establish a Wireguard VPN connection to our home network.

The upshot was that we had great security, it greatly simplified using the Internet with all of our devices, even the ones that don’t work well with captive portal WiFi, and we could also easily access all resources on our home network.

Cannot praise this device enough – get one if you value your security on the road.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI live full-time in an RV. I bought this device to replace Wi-Fi Ranger which is what I had been using for my internet service.Wi-Fi Rangerworked well since I got it in early 2018 but it was quirky. I always had to have the control panel open because I would lose the Wi-Fi signal on one service and I would have to be able to access it on another service. I read up on the GL-MT1300 Beryl and I thought I would give it a try as a replacement for the Wi-Fi Ranger. Setting up the device in repeater mode was relatively easy. I set it up with both Tango internet service which I can access in my RV park and I also have credentials for Xfinity Wi-Fi so I set it up with Xfinity Wi-Fi, also. Now keep in mind Xfinity Wi-Fi on the setup process you will need to go into the wireless side of the control panel when you’re setting this up and you will need to disable security and keep it open. Once you’ve disabled the security go back to the internet side of the control panel and scan for Wi-Fi that you can get onto. I was able to get onto Xfinity 5G even though it was a weak signal. Next, I went to my phone and selected the wirelessGL-MT1300-5G.I was prompted to enter my Xfinity credentials. Once I enter the Xfinity credentials I’m able to access the internet on my phone and now I can access the internet on the computer that I used to set up theGL-MT1300. Once I’m able to access the internet on the computer I go back into the control panel to the wireless side and I activate the security and lock it down so that way I’m the only one that can use this wi-fi signal that’s the trick to be able to use Xfinity hotspots and other hotspots that may require this workaround. Tango internet service did not require me to do this workaround. It allowed me to enter my credentials direct from the computer. The download speeds for this device are consistent at approximately 22mps or greater and 5mps or greater upload speeds. This allows me to also connect up to 40 devices, however, I only connect 10 devices to it. My 2-MacBook Pros, my 2-smartphones, my Amazon Firestick my, LG Smart TV, my Roku device on another TV, my Alexis Echo dot, my Google home mini, and my Samsung pad device. All of them work flawlessly. I can also mirror my laptop to my LG Smart TV when I use my WebEx classes and a trading platform that I use called Thinkorswim. I have to say using this device has been way better than theWi-Fi Rangersetup that I was using for my wireless service and that cost me better than $700 back in early 2018 so this little $75 device has been working flawlessly for me and I would highly recommend it especially for people who are full-time RVers.

Everything I’ve used this travel router for has been great with no issues. I’ve used it as a public wifi repeater and as a standalone router converting public ethernet to private wifi. It works flawlessly in both categories. It’s certainly on the expensive side for a travel router but you get what you pay for in this situation I believe. I’ve had zero issues with it and have never had to reset it.

I had previously bought the GL.iNet MT-300. Despite having a 500/75 Mbps full fiber connection, the MT-300 gave me very poor speed test results, about 30/10 Mbps and was highly inconsistent. Teams calls were choppy and sporadic, I could barely open and save files, and even websites were struggling to load properly. The same VPN provider using used directly on my PC and phone were significantly faster. So I figured it must be the router.

Upgrading to the MT-1300 was a dream. While triple the price, it’s at least triple the performance at 90/30 Mbps and entirely reliable as a VPN router. No issues with Teams or streaming video, and everything works as it should. While I’m not getting the 500/75 Mbps of my base connection, this is likely a limitation of my VPN provider rather than the router. Plus for the times I need a VPN, 90/30 Mbps is plenty.

Setup is a breeze. Used as a WiFi extender, it’s fast and simple to connect to your existing 5 GHz (recommended) or 2.4 GHz network. From there, I just went onto my VPN Unlimited account page, copied the Wireguard configuration script and pasted it into the MT-1300’s VPN Client settings. Voila!

Highly recommended if you need a whole house VPN solution as a separate network to your main home network.

    Images show various speed tests:
30/10 Mbps using Wireguard on the MT-300
90/30 Mbps using Wireguard to Germany on this the MT-1300
500/75 Mbps using my base connectio

Wireguard VPN, super easy and fast.

Travel router arrived on time and it was easy to set up. We use it as a second router to get a stronger wifi connection to the other side of the house. I thought it was a little expensive but if it last it is probably worth it. It does remember your settings so you don’t have to set it up but 1 time. Just plug it in and you are ready to go.

The router works great using a tethered phone for Internet. I have my computer connected with an ethernet cable and I still have wifi for other devices. Setup is not as simple as it seems. It does require logging into the IP address of the router. You will have to that with any computers you want to use with the router. It’s small and does everything it’s advertised to do. Just be aware its’ not plug and play.

This router comes with OpenWRT and is exactly as described. It has quite a bit of flexibility and works extremely well for me as a travel router. That being said, OPEN WRT and GL.iNET’s interface is not exactly user friendly. It takes abit of setting up and some of the pages are broken and required command lines to set settings (Example File sharing).

For people like me that wanted a highly configurable option for portable networking this is wonderful, however for most I suggest you look at simpler options. That being said I purchased this after returning Netgear’s option which had a non-functional interface, lacked features, and had awful signal range.

TP-Links portable routers are easier to setup, but shorter range and slower speed.

This company makes great little routers. They are small enough to pack on a trip. They have wired ethernet and wifi and can establish a WAN connection via ethernet, wifi, phone tethering, and a 3G/4G modem. I’ve tried the first 3 and they work fine. They have an easy setup which covers most of what I want to do, but you can also dig deep into the advanced menus and do a lot of configuration there. It has a firewall and VPN client and server. I have one at home and take one when traveling. Then I have them VPN to each other and suddenly I have access to my home network while traveling — shared drives, printers, and all my traffic looks like it originates from home. I run the Beryl unit on a USB battery bank (make sure it’s rated for the 3A that might get pulled). And the price is reasonable. Recommended.

I travel with a lot of tech (Chromecast, Xbox, switch, laptop, etc.)

I have set the network name and password to the same as my home. All devices connect automatically.

When I get to a hotel or Airbnb I simply plug this into the onsite router, and it’s like I’m in my own home.

Sometimes I don’t have access to Ethernet (i.e. in hotels). The wifi repeater mode is great! You simply go into the settings, scan, select the hotel wifi, enter the password. Done! Your devices then automatically connect like you’re in your home.

This is a must have for anyone that ever travels
    – even once a year it’s worth it!

Love this little router. The GL.iNET routers are great in general. This is the first that I’ve purchased that supports 5G as a repeater or a for connectivity. I don’t like connecting directly to Xfintiy or other such hotspots without the travel router, and this little thing is fantastic for that. You just need to setup the router on the WIFI you want to repeat and run through the captive portal steps from another device (or the same one, I suppose). Setup was a breeze (suggest using the included Cat5 cable as when you do it wirelessly, you need to deal with connection/disconnection issues), although it helps to have a n idea of what you’re doing and how you want to do it. It supports a lot of VPNs, so I plan to use it to tunnel all my traffic to my home when I travel. All in all, a great little router.

Good quality, small and compact, works well. The web interface is nice and easy to use, and the setup has been surprisingly simple and worked on first trial even though I didn’t have experience setting up a vpn router. I really liked the product. I’m using just one of the many supported functionalities, which is setting up a permanent vpn shielded network at home (for example to connect a smart tv).

My only concerns were with the fact that not very many vpn providers offer winguard support specifically for vpn routers (they offer it for the desktop application, which is not what I wanted), so I had to change vpn provider to find one that did offer the service. I ended up choosing AzireVPN because had an acceptable price and most of all is one of only two VPN providers for which the router is pre-configured (the other one being the pricier Mullvad). For the rest of the providers that support router-integrated Winguard protocol, I guess you need to do a little more technical mumbo jumbo with the connection string. Still, the router is easy and even though I didn’t need to use it, I feel confident I could easily make it work.

A little improvement could be adding some other functionalities to the programmable physical button, for example being able to easily toggle between two different vpn servers, instead of switching vpn connection on and off.

If you use PIA or ProtonVPN, there is no way of using Wireguard with this router. Thus your data speed is limited to the processing power of the router using OpenVPN. In my case, it didn’t go above 40kbps.

I have this for a about a month now. The unit is small and nice looking. I have used it in 2 locations, my own home and a hotel room. I connected the router using a ethernet cable to my home broadband router and used it as a WiFi router. The WiFi speed was good at home. VPN also worked. I used one of the 2 WireGuard VPN providers recommended by the GL.iNet. It worked great. Even wth VPN, speed is still good. I did that for about a month. Then took it on a trip (almost 3 weeks now). I used a similar configuration using a Ethernet cable to connect the GL.iNet to the hotel network and setup the WiFi for my 2 laptops. It worked great. Good speed.
The web interface is also easy to use to configure the Gl.iNet to try different mode. I mostly used the Ethernet connection option to connect to the GL.iNet to the internet. But I did try using Wireless mode as well. Configuration is easy using the web interface, at least for me since I work in the IT.
It is well worth the $80 I paid for it, because I need the VPN part.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersJust purchased this router a few days ago. The setup of this router was straightforward. My main interest is using this device as a VPN client on public networks. As an experienced user of dd-wrt firmware on Asus and Linksys routers, I’ve found some useful things missing or not working properly. I was hoping to configure the router to allow ssh access to the device, perhaps this is something that needs to be installed and/or requiring a firmware update. One of the menus allows the setting of the timezone in which the router will be used. After this setting, the date/time reports the correct timezone but the date and time is not correct, even after doing a page refresh. I was hoping that on the same config page for setting timezone, they would allow the user to enable NTP and provide an NTP server address for time sync.

When I do a scan for Wi-Fi networks to connect to, I have yet to see my 5Ghz network SSID show up. Other devices on my network can see, and are connected to my 5G wireless.

Installing Luci under the advance menu page doesn’t work, I get prompted to update the plugin software under the application menu. This action is performed and takes approximately 20 seconds to perform, there is no feedback as to whether the update was successful. Returned back to installing Luci and get another error message. Additional attempts repeats the same behavior/error messages reported.

I’ve reached out to their tech support, and they have been responsive, and getting resolution is currently work in progress. Hopefully this will get resolved soon. I’ll update as I continue to work with tech support and hopefully have better news to share.

UPDATE: 05/25/21 – Installation of Luci was successful after making a change to a router setting that was prohibiting Internet connection to the download site for Luci. If you are a power user of routers, you need to install Luci to get access to more advanced router settings.

No connection to 5G network was discovered to be an RF channel issue. The router I was trying to connect the travel router to was using Channel 52. This is how the “auto” setting in dd-wrt works. I manually selected a channel, channel 36, and it worked! I was told that channels 36 – 48 and 149-165 will work. This is the first time I had this problem with my 5G network. My only hope is that public Wi-Fi hotspots will be using ones of these channels as I won’t have the luxury that I did at home by changing the channel (frequency).

I’ll update to 4 stars and continue to monitor the performance of this router.

It’s kind of hard finding a router that is powerful enough for everyday home use and small enough to travel, but this one really checks all the boxes. I’ve been using it for the last week and it’s been really stable, both WiFi and wired. Speeds are excellent, and it doesn’t get too warm. It’s also pretty small, so I it will easily fit in my bag when I take a trip. WiFi signal for 5Ghz has been fairly strong considering it only has 2 antennas. I have not yet tested the advanced stuff like VPN, but the admin interface looks like it has a ton of features.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersNeeded to buy one of these for a prolonged stay in a hotel. It is a fantastic travel router and served several needs for my stay.

    1) I could avoid the captive portal login for all of my devices. When I needed to refresh my login I just had to do it on the router, not all of my connected devices.

    2) Some of my devices could not interact with a captive portal login system. This gets around that since my router can, and the devices then connect to the router.

    3) I needed better security for my work devices. Connecting to a public Wi-Fi, even behind a portal is too insecure. This adds an extra layer to my devices.

    4) Hotel Wi-Fi isn’t great, but having the router set to repeater mode let me take the signal and distribute it more efficiently throughout my room, eliminating dead spots.

    5) My work devices have their own VPN services I need to connect to. Connecting via Wi-Fi to my router that is repeating the signal, and then connecting to my work’s VPN causes a significant loss in performance. I can connect directly to the router through and Ethernet cable instead, lessening the performance loss as it repeats the Wi-Fi signal, and making my VPN work connection bearable enough for video streaming (depending on hotel Wi-Fi connection, obviously).

All in all a fantastic travel router. I will be bringing this with me on more than just work trips, this is coming with me whenever I travel period. Really looking forward to trying out all of its built in VPN functionality for future international trips.

I found the Beryl by complete chance on Reddit and took the dive and purchased it after watching some reviews on YouTube.

The device is absolutely goregous, very small for a router!! It was well packaged. I had this router setup within just a few minutes. The admin Interface is very nice, modern and straight forward.

I have a few dedicated streaming IP’s via Torguard and had these set up very quickly using Torguards handy config generator. Testing the router, i was getting fantastic speeds around my house using Wireguard. The router has an excellent Android app, i was able to control all aspects of the router from my phone, locally or via the cloud. I was able to switch off the vpn, swap the vpn connects at the click of a button!

overall it’s a nice little wireless router which has pretty decent range. Like the fact you don’t need the dedicated, bulky ac adapter. Only gripe I have is questionable/marginal vpn support. Does work with wireguard and openvpn, but does not support nordvpn nordlynx or expressvpn lightway protocols. Plus, usability of the Beryl with onboard vpn protocol in problematic countries is iffy.

Hopefully they can make this a bit smaller like the Slate in the coming versions. It’s easy to setup with most features out of the box. I would like to see better security and monitoring out of the box.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersI bought this as a range extender, because I live in an RV and needed to create my own network using public wifi. It works for that, and as a wire bridge from wifi to my laptop or other router, and as a router for my tethered Android (it’s an LG, and I couldn’t tether it to my Asus router). I can connect both my phone and the public wifi to it simultaneously, and it will do some type of failover between the two if one fails, although they don’t advertise this. I gave up on my Asus router and just use this. It’s not that it’s better than the Asus, it’s just less finicky, since my Internet sources tend to be random sometimes. This is a better travel router, in other words. If I had a regular Internet connection, the Asus would be better.

The interface is easy to figure out, even on a cell phone. You don’t have to reset it every time you switch signals. It saves your network setup, and saves the connections, so if I need to switch wifi sources, I just log in to it with my cell phone and tap a couple of images. It will restart, so it will log you out of everything when you do this, so you have to make sure everything reconnects. Again, it’s a great travel router, not necessarily a replacement for a home router.

    It’s also cool looking.

Negatives: mostly minor. It gets warm, so I set it on the open mouth of a cup, so it has maximum air flow. That works well. This is only an issue because I run it all the time. Also, it’s so light that it can’t hold the cable down when I bridge it.

A couple more points for fellow RVers. It never drops signals, so far. It does most things as a lot of the more expensive made-for-RVs options out there– it picks up weaker signals, it bridges them to wired or wireless devices, it’s easy to sign into those authorization pages many public wifis have, it allows tethering of Android phones, and it has a user interface that’s quick and geared towards switching Internet sources easily. You can also use it to extend a wifi signal to another router’s WAN port, if you have a router that does load balancing, for instance. It does not, though, let you connect a long range antenna, and with only two LAN ports, it has limited expandability. So it depends on your needs.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis little router is 50% bigger in size than Gl-Ar 750 (slate) but still very small and perfect for travel. It is noticeably faster than slate (ar750) which I also have. I have connected this to Gl-Mv1000 (brume) which has no WiFi. Brume is connected to gigabit fibre broadband and VPN activated. This little router with 5G WiFi band gives over 50mb speed with OpenVPN and over 100mb with WireGuard. Almost twice as fast as the older and smaller ar-750 model. And I get signal in other rooms ( though signal strength drops) but still impressive for its size.
Software is easy to use. DNS over TLS with Cloudflare does work in addition to VPN.
For me it’s a perfect companion to the GL.iNet Brume MV-1000 which is far better in terms of stability and faster VPN. This router would be perfect for travel and for using VPN when abroad. I did like the older slate model and used that in Spain to connect back to Uk via VPN. Gl.iNet routers are my favourite to take on holiday.
Overall this company makes some really good routers. It would be wrong to compare them with top end Asus or other routers which I have.
I use these mainly for VPN and very stable VPN that these Gl.iNet routers provide. Software is simple and easy to navigate.

For price this is excellent and very capable router.
    Highly recommended

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersOne of the biggest advantages to this router above all others is the built in connectivity to TOR
Tor (derived from “The Onion Router”) is a free and open-source software for enabling anonymous communication. It helps users to explore the internet with privacy.
It also allows you to choose your exit node, which is a huge deal.

For comparison, a comparable device of lesser quality the “Anonabox” costs over 120 dollars and is very… finicky to put it nicely.

If you are traveling a lot and need a travel router with built in VPN capability this one seems to work great. It can handle capture portal log-ins (like hotels or airports typically use) and then provide a secure network for all your devices that handle all traffic over VPN. I have used it with both OpenVPN and Wireguard. The setup is pretty straight forward. Minor gripe: the Web UI is a bit glitchy. Sometimes when I connect or disconnect the VPN, the Web UI seems to get stuck. The android app seems to be a bit more responsive. Minor issue.

Worked as intended, just that it came without an instructions manual(you can get it through googling it or downloading the GLiNet app. Pretty idiot-proof. Use this to get around most hotel wifi captive portals and share that single device wifi allowance with multiple other devices don’t forget to turn off your VPNs/Tor on this device before you try to connect to the hotel wifi if not the connection will time out.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought it after my brother showed me his.
I needed to replace my previous ASUS because I wanted to put the modem, the router and an HDD in a small place and the ASUS couldn’t fit.
I was a little sceptical at the beginning but after connecting it I have to say that I am extremely happy with it.
Honestly, I prefer this to my previous ASUS.
The signal is strong, coverage is good, it gets power form a USB-C port and it can be connected to any usb plug with no problems, even the broadband router I have.
The Wi-fi connection at 2.4Ghz is even faster and more reliable than the previous router.
Maybe it is meant to be a travel router but I am happy that my brother talked to me about it.
If I had to by one now, in general, it would be this one.

This is a great step up in performance from a Mango, with expected downsides. It’s wifi reach is much greater, it has dual band so its repeater performance can be much greater, and with a dual core processor its wireguard/openvpn performance is much better. The downsides are that it is larger and needs its own power supply. If you are going from hotel room to hotel room every night or so, the Mango is more suited; if you are in 2 bedroom airbnb for a week or so the Beryl is worth it.

There is beta software available on the website, and I was able to install LuCI, adblock, and sqm without issue.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI never quit traveling during the pandemic. I’ve used this in three different hotel rooms. One of my regular and favorite rooms has a crappy internet connection in the back of the room where the desk is located. This Beryl fixed that. It’s easy to setup at home. Harder in a hotel room. You’ll need an ethernet cable and the ability to adjust your ethernet adapter to the .3 subnet. The interface software is really good. Otherwise, connecting to this travel router in a hotel with a captive portal will take a few minutes to accomplish. There is plenty of online help. Once I connect the Beryl in my hotel, I leave it plugged in and connected. I’ve never had it disconnect during a weeks stay. The 2.4Ghz connection reach through the hotel and into the courtyard.

Impressive little router that is easy to use and very light for travelling. With it’s price, it is a good value for money. However, I am still wondering why when I use this as repeater to existing wifi and connect my mobile phone as a wifi client in order to use the Amazon app, the Amazon app suffers the “Uh oh. Something went wrong on our side” error. If I disconnect my mobile phone’s wifi connection to this repeater and connect it directly to existing wifi, the Amazon app works again. I am yet to find out why this problem happens.

The other issue I found is that connection to admin page is not secured. I am also yet to find out how to secure this.

Overall, it is a great little router for travelling.

Update: The router is not the cause of Amazon app error. It is the network the router connects to. I am still to find a solution to secure the unsecured admin page using HTTPS.

Bought this to use with Android tethering. One click and everything was set up. Range is also better (at max power) than my old B525 which is over twice the size. Of course you also get all the nice OpenWRT features. Possibly the best router given price/performance, portability and features.

Golden Review Award: 32 From Our UsersAs someone who travels and lives as a nomad, Beryl is an absolute beast when it comes to being a repeater. I’ve tried Creta, Slate and this one I have now and there’s no contest. Beryl’s antennas to receive the signal as a repeater from what I’ve seen is twice as strong as Slate’s ability. Mind you, Slate (AR-750S) is great! But Beryl’s ability and speed is significantly better. Blew my mind when I ran tests of how much strong it is compared to Slate. I plan to buy another one once they come back in stock and trading my friend’s Slate for it (since this was his original gift lol). Creta (AR750) doesn’t even come close to being good compared to these two as a repeater. But it does have its advantages of cost.

Keep in mind reader, this is based on use for Wifi Repeating. That’s my personal/business needs.

Setting up a new SSID is easy, go to wifi click modify, BAM change your SSID and password.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersHow do they fit all these specifications into such a small box?
    AC1300

OK “travel” router is a bit of a misnomer these days as not too many people are travelling but the ability to connect via wire or Wifi and be setup as a router, repeater or AP means this can be used both at home and on the go and look good doing it.

Security is one of the hallmarks of the Gl.iNet range, and the ability to support Wireguard and OpenVPN server/client , DNS over HTTPS, Tor etc are all included as standard. In this day and age you need to be careful where and how you access data and be secure doing it.

If you need support, there’s a great user forum as well as a helpdesk (though be aware it’s based on SE Asian timezones).

Running OpenWRT is the icing on the cake. I found Gl.iNet when I had a router that never received firmware updates and where I was stuck with whatever the vendor built in. Updates are regular with these devices and often will be the result of users reporting issues. With OpenWRT I can install any of the OpenWRT repo modules to extend the abilities of the router to do whatever I need ( Transmission BT, adblock, DLNA, Shadowsock etc) . While there’s a neat interface over the top of OpenWRT making common functions easy to setup, you still have full access to OpenWRT and LUCI and of course CLI if you need it.

If you’re looking for a mini router that’s just as much at home as it is on the road, certainly consider the Beryl.

    How.....?????

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersI am a very happy owner of the mini travel router GL.iNet GL-AR300M (Shadow).

I wanted to add a router to my home network as the modem provided me with is 2.4Ghz wifi only, interferences are killing its performances to 30/40Mbps. The super-easy configuration of the mini-router I’ve got lead me directly into Gl.Inet in my research. I was considering Slate but Beryl right now is cheaper and seems more performing.

    Pros:
    – pocket size
    – easy installation, mine is powered up by the modem’s USB port so I am not even using the charger coming in the box
    – easy set up (plenty of guides online in case)
    – fast wifi speed thanks to dual-band wifi (2,4Ghz + 5Ghz), some more details below
    – cool design (I don’t really care as long as it performs well but the look plays its part)
    – pocket size
    – doesn’t warm up much
    – features: Gigabit LAN ports, WPA3, VPN, Switch button, Qos, Guest wifi (check the Gl.iNet’s website for the full spec)
    – great responsiveness of Gl.iNet Customer Service

Speeds LAN to Wifi (I haven’t tried it as repeater but I was happy with the mini router so Beryl will be only better):
I am reporting the speeds from a review a saw online before buying Beryl, where the guy reached (download and upload are comparable, upload can be slightly lower):
    – 275-280Mbps under wifi (same as connected via LAN)
    – Wireguard VPN: 100-105Mbps under wifi (same as connected via LAN)
    – OpenVPN: 12Mbps in wifi (I reached 17Mbps, it depends on the VPN provider I think), more than enough for two people streaming FullHD videos and leave space for comfortable browsing

I am so happy about my new GL-MT1300 (Beryl) that I think I will keep the mini router (GL-AR300M, Shadow) for solo travels only or to work from the coffee shop. Instead, when I will be travelling with my partner, I will simply unplug Beryl and take it on holiday with us, I just need a USB-C cable for that 🙂

The definitive router for me, with the right performances, overall for this price.
