Google Nest Protect – Smoke Alarm And Carbon Monoxide Detector – The Smoke Alarm That That Others Look Up To (Battery) 3 Pack

Nest Protect

The smoke alarm that others look up to.

Nest Protect is a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm with a split-spectrum smoke sensor to detect both fast- and slow-burning fires. It can send an alert to your phone,[1] speak to you and even light the way in the dark.

Nest Protect

It tells you what the danger is and where it is.

The Split-Spectrum Sensor looks for both fast- and slow-burning fires. It also has a 10-year CO sensor so that it can tell you where poisonous, invisible CO is hiding. And all your Nest Protects speak up at the same time to tell you what’s wrong and where the problem is.

Nest Protect
  1. Nest Protect

    Easy to install.

Nest Protect only takes minutes to set up with your iOS or Android device. Once you’ve added each of your Nest Protects to your Nest account, they will automatically connect to each other.

  2. Nest Protect

    Thoughtful, not annoying.

Nest Protect checks itself over 400 times a day and lets you know if something is wrong. It also has Steam Check, so a nice, relaxing shower shouldn’t cause your alarm to shout at you.

  3. Nest Protect

    You’ll know, from anywhere.1

Nest Protect can alert your phone when something is wrong at home. You’ll receive a message if the alarm goes off, if the batteries start to run low or if a sensor isn’t working.

Nest Protect

1 Mobile alerts require working Internet and Wi-Fi.

Nice and easy to install. The Amazon ones are also around 3 months old (10 year shelf life from manufacturing).

Other shops stock 12+ month alarms, so nice to eat relatively new ones and not old stock

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFabulous
When I say fabulous, one of our main concerns when leaving the house unattended is that the cats could be trapped inside when there is a fire. With these alarms (we have three fitted inside the house and a fourth in the garage), we have a linked system that is hard wired in and with a battery back up that will alert us if smoke is detected in the house. The system undertakes regular sound checks to ensure the alarms still work and it is reassuring to see a full history of each alarm in the Nest app. Should there ever be a fire when I am not in the house, I can contact a key-holding neighbour that can rescue my cats or at least call the fire brigade. Of course, these also alert to the threat posed by Carbon Monoxide and with an alarm as loud as these, you are unlikely to sleep through the alert (as long as you have enough in your home; don’t stint on safety).

Couple of things to observe when you're replacing / upgrading the G1 version...
I bought three Generation 1 Nest Protect (Wired) Smoke Alarms around 5 years ago to replace the basic-but-linked ones we had. They worked really well… until last weekend when one of them announced (in the middle of the night! Like, why!?) that its CO sensor had failed and that I should replace it immediately (and then continued to beep every so often afterwards). Literally, the following evening, another announced that it had ‘expired’ and that it too should be replaced. So… as we’d been fairly pleased with their general burnt toast / bacon fat / wafting BBQ fume reporting… and that they also functionally tie in with the Nest Thermostat that we also have (and by the way, we’re on our fourth as apparently – warranty replaced units aside – they don’t seem to last much beyond five years either), I ordered three wired 2nd Generation versions to replace them.

Couple of things to observe when you’re replacing / upgrading the G1 version:- Despite the very similar appearance of the G1 and G2 Nest Protect devices, the baseplates are completely different… so the devices aren’t interchangeable with them. And none of the existing holes line up… so be prepared to get the drill out as you’ll be re-fixing everything. And the mains connector is also not compatible, however they do supply neat terminal blocks to make changing the cable connector over fairly easy (please remember to isolate the circuit your smoke alarms are on when installing!).

Once you’re past that and they’re up and running, they pretty much look and function in exactly the same way as the the previous versions… with the only exception (that I’ve noticed) that you can silence a triggered alert from your mobile device… oh, and that the CO sensor should last ten years this time… instead of the five’ish I got from the last one.

    Value or Not?
We have 3 smoke alarms in our home (hard wired). One started bleeping the other week, I took it down thinking it was the battery, then saw the replacement date on the underside. 2016. I never even knew there was a 10 year life span on smoke alarms! We bought this house as a new build, and were never told this. Anyway, do we buy the same again (18 each on Amazon) or go for the nest type. We went for the nest for a few reasons. They have a CO2 alarm too, (our house didn’t have one), they have a nightlight, they constantly check themselves.
If you added these together, smoke alarm 20, CO2 alarm 20, nightlight 20, the nest isn’t too far off the mark price wise. I still reckon they are 15-20 too dear, but we decided to go for 3x nest units.
They were easy to install, as the wiring was already there, it was just a case of putting the nest connectors on, then on the ceiling they go. The app is straightforward.
The best thing about them…The nightlight. Very handy. Can spot you on the landing/hallway very easily. When it comes on and goes off it does it gradually so doesn’t wake up the rest of the house. Can be changed in the settings, ON,OFF, etc, brightness.
The wired units also have a tiny green LED on them which shows there is power going to them. When you turn the lights off at night to go to bed, the unit glows green for a couple of seconds to tell you its OK.
It’s a shame they are so dear especially when you need 3, but breaking the price down over 10 years its not all that bad.
Ours came with manufacture dates of september 2020, and 1 had December 2019. I really don’t think it will make any difference as they have been boxed and sealed all this time. I just labelled them all up as fitted in Feb 2021, replace 2031.
TBH, our old ones were 5 years out of date, and I noticed they were manufactured in 2006, and our house wasn’t built then! So, builders don’t care. I guess they were in a container with all the other house fittings. If it hadn’t been for the old unit bleeping I would have never looked, When we bought the house I looked at them and thought ‘brilliant, hard wired smoke detectors, i’ll never have to look at them again’.

Bought to replace 3 that had reached their expiry date (sorry but they don’t last forever). Good life on batteries but seems only if you use Energizer Ultimate Lithium (as supplied). Easy to replace each alarm in turn by deleting the old one from the app and then adding the new one using same ‘name'(eg kitchen). ‘Path light’ function is great for night time “visits” as saves switching main lights on waking the whole household.
Will buy again in 10 years time or an improved model if available.

    Safety at a cos
Really like these smart detectors. A note to be aware of. They are factory set to have a 10 year service life. On the rear of the unit it has manufacture date and replace by date. So if its old stock the service life will be shorter. When they reach the end date the unit constantly chirps and then take out the batteries and despose of said items. I have had a few from other sellers that had 2016 and 2017 manufacture date clearly old stock and were returned.

Sensor death dates not given at time of purchase
These were replacements for previous Nest devices that were dying. So note that it seems that the 9 year or so lives are related to manufacturing, not activation dates. So these two – ordered and installed together – have death dates 6 months apart (in 2029). Amazon should sell these with death dates given at time of order. To find the death date look at the technical info for each devices in the app. Otherwise fine – though the incompatibility of mounting plates and screw holes is tedious!

Piece of mind when up and running
Bought 3 units to replace 3 original wired non-smart smoke detectors (cheaper to buy 3 singles instead of the 3-pack!). Units received were all the same except manufacture date meaning 1 has a 10 year life cycle left, other 2 around 9 years (disadvantage to buying from Amazon unfortunately). I’m by no means familiar with wiring / installation and it took a while to get these wired by recycling previous wiring for original units (not a Protect issue but I blame builder / original electrician for being over keen on those plastic wiring blocks and small holes in roof space!). Once setup at my desk eventually installed in the ceiling there were no real issues. One unit dropped off the wifi and took quite a few efforts to reconnect, requiring me to resort to resetting it and approx and hour rejoining). The design of the round plate connecting to the ceiling and the circle alarm is very fiddly when trying to attach ceiling too.

    Expensive high technology
I like this product because it is integrated with the Google family and allow interconnection with app and other devices. The very negative is that is very expensive for a very basic work, where you rarely interact (fortunately) with it. In its main functions, it works properly. Its interconnectivity and smart features are great but only used during installation and testing. I like the feature of the light that turns on when you walk at night close to it.

    Love the nightligh
Well, in general it’s just a smoke and CO2 alarm and until the house burns down I’m not going to know how well it works. Still, I appreciate that I can check the batteries on the phone. The best thing though is the nightlight. Since there’s one in the upstairs landing and one in the downstairs hallway, I no longer worry about falling down the stairs in the middle of the night. Just enough light but not too much.

Does what it says, but do check the age of product on delivery.
First foray into the smart home world of smoke detectors.
Wiring instructions and connectors supplied make this a relatively easy ish (if very fiddly) installation. Hardest part for me seemed to be getting the alarm to sit on the backing plate.
Worth checking the area where previous smoke alarm was for fit especially any wiring box and areas not painted that won’t be covered when you fit the nest alarm – avoids taking it down again.

You need apparently a google home account which then directs you to a nest app download, the two appearing not to link to each other – but the nest app works okay.

Fun for a few hours of annoying the family with the test function.
Night light does work okay if you boost your highest value – only works when no other light source impacting the sensors the alarm must use for this ( based on my testing) anyway.
Alarm happily tests itself regularly and you can see that on the app so great comfort.

Another on order to add to the alarm family.

Worst point, advertised 10 year life of product, already a year old when it arrived from Amazon – sept 2020.

    Overall another great Nest produc
I bought two Nest Protect to replace my precious wired smoke alarm. Setting both up using the nest app was simple and easy to do. As yet, not integrated with the Google Home app but that seems to be in the works. The night light is a nice touch and helpful. The brightness can be set via the app. This feature can be turned off if required.

Now for the physical fitting. I’m no expert, but class myself as a confident DIYer. The wiring diagram is easy to follow and all the connections are supplied. The down side is the connection to the alarm itself. It sits proud approx 5mm above the back of the alarm and offset to one side. This means you need to make sure the hole in the wall/ceiling is wide enough and deep enough to accommodate the 3 connect blocks and the connection. My previous alarm sat flush with the ceiling so I had to go to task on the ceiling, easier said than done when my home was built in 1890!

    Overall great product!

    It is just amazing!!!
A must have for a family! I could not resist testing it out myself as I needed to know if it worked. But I will give you the start to finish.
So we received the package (we bought 4 in total) and both looked different, one said NEST (this one) the other had Google on it. A shame that the logo has been taken away as the logo makes it even cooler! We read the instructions and pinpointed where the would be going. We installed one and the next 3 were so easy, just a press off a button to be short. One is in the kitchen (see pictures) and the other ones in the hallway. We wanted Nest as we already have the thermostats (you must buy them, they are awesome)
When you have installed them, you run a test. This makes you aware of how loud the voice and alarms are but they do the job they are meant to be doing.
Now yesterday I couldn’t resist. I usually never open my oven when baking but I just had to test the alarm (see picture). It works amazing and I just love it.
It sends a message to your phone (nest app) and all the alarms says the same thing. The one thing they do not tell you is:
IT EVEN SHOWS ON MY THERMOSTATS
I can write a book to tell you how amazing they are! I knew the products were good, but this is just amazing.

Next up is the camera’s for the house haha, then I think the doorbell and by then we might have the whole family of products 🙂

4th Alarm added and still happy
This is the 4th Nest Alarm we have added to our house and I remain as happy with this one as the pervious 3, if not more so. Easy to set up and easy to install. We had some issues where the Amazon page listed the item as a “Battery” version, but we were delivered the wired version instead. This was quickly resolved and it looks like the listing has been updated since.

Took my time choosing a new fire alarm after redecorating and 3 months on im very please with this one. Love the motion sensor night light, subtle but very effective. They look so much nicer than the cheaper fire alarms. Wiring up was a little tricky, I would advise you use your own chocolate block screw connectors not the push in ones supplied. With i tried them they kept unclipping and it would lose power/connection. Would recommend

Happy with the item except for the fact that it has less that 9 years left of it’s lifespan. To loose over 1 year (before it is even received) with a product that costs this much is poor.

I now have 4 of these throughout my house, two of which I replaced older Fire Angel units with.
Set up is relatively easy & once hard wired into the power supply, you are good to go.
Night light is a little bonus, that I didn’t think we would notice, but it really is a nice touch.
I really like the app and the monthly health checks.

No hesitation in recommending these units, being old school I would recommend installing ones that are hard wired to an electrical supply.

Worth every penny for the peace of mind they offer.
So far these have been flawless, seen other reviews stating that theirs had gone off randomly. They automatically test themselves to make sure they’re working. Had them for 6 months and they’ve worked a charm. The silence button is awesome for the kitchen. Also these things are LOUD i have one in every bedroom and one downstairs and landing. With the boiler located in one of the bedrooms the carbon monoxide alarm is also an excellent addition.

Set up was easy and quick and the actuall installation was a doddle requiring you to tighten a few screws. Also reading online that these can integrate with other nest products and even better, I love it when company’s provide this, they’re fully compatible with IFTTT. Which provide a whole load of additional features.

For example. I have mine to turn all lights in my house if the alarm sounds. This could be especially useful for people who are hard of hearing. Set the lights to red to signify something is wrong and to leave. Although this may not be 100% reliable it’s nice to offer it. This functionality can be achieved if you have a Nest learning thermostat as well.

    Great alarm
Love these smoke alarms – the most important point is that it uses voice as well as an alarm – the voice wakes the kids up straight away whereas we know they will sleep through a regular alarm (we set the alarms off in centre parks once and it was SOOO LOUD but the kids all slept through it!!).

Also love the path light function on the landings – great feature to give a bit of light at nighttime when you are moving around the house.

Look quite smart on the ceiling.

It’s a lot of money for a smoke alarm but it’s a lot more than a smoke alarm and totally worth it from my perspective.

Install harder than the battery version/beware of the 10 Yr lifetime claim as ours arrived with less
If you haven’t installed the wired version before, the installation is not as easy (understandably) as the battery version. The main issue I found was that the plug on the back of the Nest Protect obviously sticks out and must go into the hole in the celling but the plug IS NOT centred on the back. This means that you need to line up the mounting plate off centre to the hole in the celling. If you factor this in, then it is much easier to install.
Also, be aware that although the Amazon description claims that it has a 10 year lifespan, ours did not. It arrived with just over 9 years left. I queried this with Amazon and they kindly sent out replacements, however, these were further “out of day” than the original ones sent. Other than this the product is every bit as good as other reviews say. We now have several in our house and they work brilliantly. Expensive, but brilliant none the less!

Fitment and set up are fairly straightforward. The wiring kit and connector blocks work nicely. Worth making sure that the ceiling hole for the wiring is bored out to the same diameter as the hole in the centre of the backplate or it will cause issues with fitting the unit to the plate once you’ve plugged it in; Its also easier if you feed all the wiring into the ceiling hole before trying to fit the detector.

The system runs monthly checks on both alarms and notifies you through the nest app, I especially like the voice notifications when smoke is detected In house (cooking) plus the built in light is great when you get up at night for a stroll around the kitchen ,it bright enough for you to see so no switching on lights, I plan on replacing two other smoke alarms with this great product.

    Hi-tech Alarm that occasionally sulks!
These are wonderful well designed and effective smoke and CO2 alarms. Beautifully designed. Very functionable. Continuous self check system impressive. Only disappointment is software response to power cuts. Occasionally, fails to self reconnect to Wi-fi after power cut! Hopefully future software upgrades will remove this deficiency. Total pain to reconnect at moment.

    Fantastic sensor from Nes
Wow, I have to say I ma very impressed! Works like magic, very modern design and it will glow when it’s dark and you passing by it. I am very happy with the purchase. You can control it from your mobile, it will show you timeline of all the events, just fantastic. Hope it will work like that all the time. A little bit expensive but I still think it’s worth the price. When you buy mains wired they are cheaper, but definitely buy multipack as this is best value for money.

    Most reassuring alarms
Very easy to install and set up ( link to your WiFi). I Brought 3 of the alarms after buying an old house and wanting to change the the smoke and CO2 alarms. Really like the fact they all link to each other, for example we had an alarm activated on Boxing Day, the roast started smoking from fat (roast pork) and whilst we were in the lounge the alarm spoke and said there is smoke in the hall way, whichever alarm is activated first it then relays the message to all the alarms in the house upstairs etc and sets them off, so it’s not just one alarm that sounds. I Like the fact the lights also tell you what is going on.the pathway light is great. The alarms self test monthly and you can see all the statuses via the app. CO2 part has a great feature that if you link the alarms to a smart thermostat it can shut off the boiler if CO2 is detected even if your away from the house.
On another note our four year isn’t spooked and upset by these alarms as it tells what is happening before a test etc.
Very happy with these alarms, slightly expensive BUT I don’t believe you can really put a price on safety when it comes to your family.

    Brilliant in every way!
Brilliant, I added this upstairs to my existing Nest System, as I have one of these alarms downstairs.

Seamless in operation, attractively designed, superbly constructed and innovative and effective in use, so much more than a smoke alarm.

The Self-Test facility is brilliant and amuses visitors kids when it activates and the fluorescent LED Halo Night light so cool. It even tells me when the toast is ready even though the kitchen donor is shut and the toast not actually burning, very sensitive but not in a bad way.

All round brilliant and delivered very speedily!

They look good and are easy to install particularly if you already have other Nest products. I like the fact they test themselves and they light up at night when you walk under them. The only downside is the cost and the fact that installing in the kitchen is discouraged but that is where the boiler is. We might have to get a separate unsmart carbon monoxide alarm for the kitchen or put a nest one somewhere just outside the kirche

For your main lounge and upstairs this is probably the best smoke/C02 alarm
I like these so much, when the price dropped I brought another…
… two of these can cover the main living space and upstairs, with a loud taking female voice as well as the typical alarm sound. This is good as a voice is better at waking folk, especially children. If one goes off it tells the other, which also speaks as to where the issue is and also sets off the alarm. It also detects early issues with smoke and C02 giving a warning first but any prolonged or significant issue sets of the normal alarm.

    NOTE:
When any smoke/fire/heat alarm is installed the user/owner instructions should be checked to see if there’s a recommended replacement date. This is more common than it used to be and seems to follow feedback from users so manufacturers and testing authorities gauge the life of sensors and other degradation caused by build up of grim and dust etc.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGood pieces of kit, minor annoyances
Declaration: I work for Google but I don’t have anything to do with these products and I’m not interested in promoting their stuff. I’m writing this as a consumer.)

I bought these after moving to a new house and needing smoke alarms in the usual places – kitchen, bedrooms, near the boiler. They’re nicely built pieces of kit, and blend in unobtrusively on a white ceiling. They’re actually stylish for what they are. Other manufacturers don’t seem to consider that these things become part of the decor.

Setting up was a little tricky as they failed to connect to the wireless network I’d set up. I managed in the end by connecting to an alternate network but the message was cryptic and all I could find was that it might be down to DNS or maybe uPNP. This completely blocked the setup for a while. Some clues at least in the error messages would be good. I know the trend is to have things that hide the technical details away from the end-user, but this just caused inconvenience.

They come with good quality batteries already installed, and the mounting bracket is easy to fit. It allows you to make small adjustments to make sure it’s straight compared to the line of the walls. It’s quite robust and I only needed a screwdriver. There are screws included.

It’s an effective smoke alarm. It performs well, it’s loud and the app connection works as it says it does.

There’s only so much you can say about a smoke/CO detector. Here’s hoping it sits and lasts for ages so it can justify its cost.

Very easy to place, install and set up

App is easy to use and quickly gets units up and running

The inbuilt night light is really sensitive however even on lowest settings provides enough light to light area.
This can be easily turned off if unit on bedroom or not required in other areas.

It’s loud! There is no way you’ll not hear this.

Only criticism is the alleged 10 year lifespan….it’s from date of manufacture not purchase so if its been sat on Amazon warehouse for months your missing out on months (7 months in our case)

    Overall though highly recommended

    Interconnected, great design for security
I bought six second-generation detectors. Amazon UK prices are lower than elsewhere. I’m happy with these detectors even if they are among the most expensive on the market. They are very easy to install, they are interconnected: i.e. they all emit a signal in case of a smoke alert and can be configured by giving them a label each one so that they indicate the place where the smoke comes from. Two problems: generation 1 was planned for a lifetime of 7 years, 5 have problems with battery consumption after 5 years and these stupid engineers have changed the fasteners and especially the holes in the fasteners between the first and second generation: non sense.

Have been using this for about a month. Seems to be well adjusted – starts the alarm process not-too-early, and works through “There’s smoke in the Kitchen” to “Smoke is getting thicker in the Kitchen – the alarm will sound” to “Alarm” in controlled steps. Frying bacon evokes the 1st level – turning on the kitchen cooker hood stops the process. Alarm status and controls are passed through to a smartphone. Have not tried to sync multiple smartphones. he hole needed for mains cable had to bigger than first though
once it connected and installed its great. I haven’t seen ti work in anger yet (tempted to burn some toast to see) 2 main grumbles – 1) The fixing to the ceiling, is not clear that the hole in the ceiling needs to be large enough to rotate the cable. (about 3 cm) Once the mains cable is plugged into the device it has to rotate at least 90 degrees to lock and the plug to the power is not in the centre of the back which rotates and there is no room between the device and the clamp on the ceiling unless the hole is large enough to allow ther cable to rotate. (see photo)
    2) the Nest app would not connect to my G-suite google, after getting “something went wrong” for 20 mins, I used my free Google account and all worked as documented.

ot the cheapest but the overall functionalities and quality make it worthwhile. Super easy to install – does regular tests and informs you about it through the app. Lots of extra features (nightlamp – home/away function – regular automatic tests – indication of smoke/fire – ability to detect steam (handy if you have it installed next to a bathroom of kids ;-)),… Would definitely recommend it!

**Edit 2** over 2 years since purchase, still using the original batteries! Nightlight still on Medium! Very happy!

**Edit** 10 months on, batteries still going very strong 🙂 Nightlight still set to Medium!

Nest are quickly becoming a household name in the Smart Home sector and these Smoke Detectors prove why.
Ridiculously easy to install, setup and test. We also have the 3rd Gen Learning Thermostat and they work seamlessly together in the Nest App.

Having slight pyrophobia (fear of fire), these put my mind at rest and I know the house is safe even when I’m not there.
The night light feature is great and saves turning on lights that wake the household. We have the light level set to Medium and the battery is still going strong. (Important to note that you must use the Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) batteries for a guaranteed performance).

Not only are they functional, but they look great too and remind me a bit of a Wireless Access Point. The battery feature saves you having wires trailing everywhere or having to route them through the ceiling – great!

It’s a good unit that you can’t put a price on for it’s safety aspects
Great product. Purchased as I was and still am turning the house smart room by room after re decorating. I have this mounted in the hallway which is joint to the kitchen and I must say it works a treat. It’s not so sensitive that it goes off each time I cook but sensitive enough to know that I’ve burned toast as I frequently do lol. I would like to see some added features from nest such as the ability to use its motion sensor with Philips hue. The Philips hue warning lights are very much delayed tho by approx 30secs but I’m not fussed about this as you can still hear the unit which after all is what a smoke alarm should do. The night light is a great feature especially when coming home late from work or just getting up in the night to grab a drink without blinding yourself with main lights. Delivery was very fast. Over all very good and little complaints about it from me.

Expensive at first, but the best detector out there. Why gamble with a cheaper one, especially one that isn’t networked? Major feature is the nightlight – I’d have needed a movement activated light there anyway and this saves buying a separate unit. If it didn’t have that, it would still be good, but I would have thought twice about it. Looks good, does exactly what it should, cannot fault it.

    An Excellent Piece of Equipme
This stylish product is simple to install, and has a number of very useful features. Especially no more being woken by an alarm with a dying battery at 3:00 am. The units issues warning on the status of the battery, the presence of smoke prior to the alarm going off, and the need to check regularly that the unit is functioning properly. Thee mobile app provides remote warning sand control. In the dark the built-in motion detector provide sufficiently illumination for safe passage. Expensive, but recommended

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our Users"Almost" Everything You Need In The Ki
These alarms are great (We have installed 3)
The features they contain probably make this the most advanced in a smoke/CO detector on the market.
I have read some reviews that say that they don’t comply with building regulations, but having read the White Paper from Nest I’m pretty sure from my understanding that they far exceed the requirements of the building regulations.
The installation is quite easy albeit a few pointers I’ll expand on in a minute. Site registration is quick and simple. The connection to the wifi (Assuming you can remember your password) is over in a jiffy.

My only complaints are very minor regarding the installation into an existing circuit in existing wiring.
    The installation kit contains:

    3 off 3 way connectors.
    4 off Phillips screws.
1 off wire with integrated plug
    1 off mounting plate
1 off alarm (with socket for plug)

    The choice of screws.
My first observation is regarding the choice of Phillips screws. Most screws and screwdrivers, in the UK, are Posidrive, many people don’t even know that there are two standards. You can use a Phillips screwdriver in a posidrive screw, but not the other way around. A Posidrive screwdriver will not fit into a Phillips screw. This means most people will not have the right screwdriver to put these screws i
I’ve included a photo showing the difference between a Phillips and a Posidrive screw

    The number of connectors.
My next observation is the supply of only 3 off 3 way connectors. Most existing wiring will require 4 off connectors. Those being Live, Neutral, Earth and the Link. I over came this with a single chocolate block connector, but it would have been so nice if Nest had included 4 connectors in their kit. See my 2nd picture.

Lastly we come to the positioning of the plug.
As can be seen in pictures 3 and 4 the socket that the plug engages with is offset from the centre. The design of the nest and its engagement with the mounting plate means you can rotate the unit to get it straight on the ceiling. However as the socket is offset, you require a large hole for the plug to rotate in as it sticks back pass the base of the Nest and also past the mounting plate into the wall board. I used a 47mm hole saw as can be seen in pictures 5 and 6. This gave the plug a nice hole to rotate in once the back plate was mounted to the ceiling. However most people will not not have a hole saw like this.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBy far the best smoke/CO alarm you can buy...
…according to Which? consumer magazine and they test them extremely thoroughly. Not only are they very sensitive to all types of fire (as well as carbon monoxide), because they link together via WiFi, activating one will activate all on all floors giving you much more time to escape (e.g if you’re in the attic and there’s a fire in the cellar). Ours have never gone off inappropriately but smoke from a hot oven in the kitchen was enough to very rapidly trigger the alarms in the hall and landing a considerable distance away. They do give you a verbal warning before going off which is sufficient time to cancel the alarm if you’ve just burnt the toast etc. There’s also a handy motion sensitive night light – provides just enough light to find your way to the bathroom without completely waking you. They even call your mobile to tell you your house is burning down while you’re away so you know to make alternative arrangements for your return and plan a funeral for the dog. Only downside is they’re not cheap but that’s trivial for the assurance they provide.

    Look really sma
I already had one Nest, but needed to replace my other smoke alarms which had gone past their use by date. Got three of the nests. Very simple to set up, just follow the app, as I already had one set up it just used the same settings. Gave them all a name and then fixed them to the ceiling. The ring is fixed with four screws that go straight into the plaster without any issues, felt firm afterwards. Then fix the alarm to the ring. Now when you test one alarm it automatically tests all of them.
They look very smart, much better than a normal smoke alarm. They are also all connected together so if one detects smoke, they all sound and tell you which one has detected smoke (or Carbon Monoxide).

    Great product but pricey.
I was a bit put off by the cost, but as my old alarms (non CO2) were well overdue for replacing, I already have a nest thermostat, and am in the process of automating my home, I thought I would give these a go.
I have not been disappointed, and being able to mute the alarm when it’s cooking mid-haps triggering the alarm is great as we have a young baby at home. They also came in handy when my wife managed to set the kettle on fire whilst I was next door and was able to run home and investigate.
As one might expect, the night light feature has been the most used, and is great for avoiding tripping over the car when stumbling to the kitchen to make a bottle in the middle of the night. It’s not so bright that it wakes you up, but provides just enough light to see where you’re going without having to fumble about for a light switch.
Overall they’ve been a great buy and will hopefully prove value for money over their 10 year life.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersOutstanding produc
It is my first time I have a Nest product but I must say that it is an outstanding product! Wow
I was looking for a smoke/CO2 alarm to integrate on my IFTTT plataform and read a lot of comments, articles and videos. There are a lot of several more affordable sensors but if you read comments you will see that people have a lot of complaints about false alarms using cheaper sensors. At an apartment I don’t want to disturb no one during the night or weekends. Nest have a reliable solution and this is not cheap. It is your choice the balance of decision of getting a faulty or a reliable sensor.
Design, quality and easy to use are the best you can expect from such device.
It test itself more than 400 times in a day and do an overall test once a month with real sound where you can schedule the best time of the day for this self test.
It has a voice interface stating the test status and warning if the level of smoke or CO2 is increasing before sound the alarm.
App is very easy and clean! It has an Summary display just stating that “system is protected” which is the only thing you should bother at. Device itself runs all tests to grant you stay secure.
It has a convenient led that lights up at dark and people get it the room, what they call “path way”, very convenient and practical.
Fast and safe delivery, 5 stars!

    Superb Customer Service and suppo
I’ll leave all the techi reviews saying how splendid these bits of kit are, and just say that although these are regarded as pricey by some, for such excellent safety in your home, it is really worth going for the best.
However, this review is about good Customer Service, which is so rare these days. I bought three of these units; two to start with and then a third for a new extention which housed a boiler. One of the alarms started to ‘eat’ batteries needing three sets in five months, whilst the other two are still going strong on the original supplied batteries. I contacted Nest Support. A new unit was despatched quickly and the return package was prepaid. I received a pleasant telephone call from their Customer Service department clarifying the return and everything was done professionally. In the unlikely event that you get problems with a Nest product, you can be assured a splendid support.

They seem pricey in comparison to the usual ones but you get a quality product. I live in a tall terrace house with a basement kitchen and I was never sure if the original alarm would wake me at night. So, as these ones are linked together, I can now be alerted in my bedroom if there is a smoke/fire in my basement or living room and told where it is. Might have to buy an extra one for the top floor.

Why risk a house for a few quid with cheapies that may or may not work when required . This unit fully self tests and reports via the smartphone app. One nice feature is to inform friends/neighbours of a fire.
Read the specs it says it all, and read the internet reviews, no point me repeating it all.

Good but goes off after my shower!
Love this (night light, app, speaks to you, warnings, testing) except for one thing…it can’t tell the difference between smoke and my bathroom door being open after a shower. Never had this problem with any other detector and it’s in the same place. At least I can jump high enough to turn it off!

Great alarm, I am very happy!
I’ve been using it for over a year now, and I am very happy with it. My daughter loves testing it ‘press to test’, the light at night when you move is also nice. It’s a bit more sensitive than my old one, so when you make steaks it warns you sometimes, but the button in the middle is very big so it is easy to silence. I am also happy that the alarm will let me know on my smartphone if I left the iron on 🙂

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersGLAD I HAVE THESE
I pondered for a long while over whether to buy these as they are anything but cheap. In the end, I decided that our life was more important than the six hundred pounds which is what I spent to put a detector in every room. They do just what I wanted. When my wife burns the toast in the kitchen, the detector in my office in the attic, and every other room announces, “There is Smoke in the Kitchen, the alarm will sound”. My phone also activates. My wife cancels the alarm in the kitchen and opens the window and the detector then announces, “The smoke is dissipating in the kitchen” and then eventually, “The smoke has cleared”. At night when I move through the house with the lights off, the detectors illuminate spreading enough light for me to see where I’m going. As an electrical fire can trip the mains power, this facility provides emergency lighting which could be a life saving feature. Once a month the system does a self check and sends a report to your phone. This has given me peace of mind and as the money spent has long been forgotten, I am so glad to have these in my home, especially as my wife and I are growing older.

Great upgrade to existing smoke alarms.
These are really great and well worth the price tag in my opinion. Fitting is fine to do yourself with the mains power as long as you pay attention to the instructions which are very clear.

The most annoying thing is the absolutely tiny QR code that needs to be scanned. My phone camera had trouble focusing on such a small code so it took several minutes.

These are extremely sensitive, and are set off by the tiniest smoke from cooking, and any kind of vape smoke, so bear that in mind if you need them in a particular place. They are also set off by steam from the bathroom, but only if you have a bathroom with no extractor or window you can open.

The best feature is the night light which comes on for you when stumbling through the hallway at night, and is enough light to see, but not so much to be annoying.

I installed two of these with no problems at all other than the QR code issue. The phone app is great and easy to use. They will last about 10 years, but all smoke alarms will stop working after this time because of the half-life of the radioactive element used to detect smoke, not because they want you to buy a replacement.

Fantastic product. I bought the three set and have in the most important areas for full coverage.
    Here are the pros:
    Great packaging
    Incredibly Easy to set up
Work together – when the alarm goes off they all respond so you hear it across the house. Voice alerts mean the system ‘tells’ you what the problem is and where the problem is
Great app – you get the alerts on your mobile device in real time with a history of events – you can add people so they also get the alerts.
    Easy to physically install
    They look fantastic
They self test based on a schedule you set

    Here is the con:
They are pricey. But you get what you pay for and what price peace of mind?

Upon opening the product I was disappointed to find no supplied wall plugs, but quickly realised they were self-tapping screws of decent quality. Installing the back plate was a breeze, and you don’t have to be super precise with the alignment with any nearby walls as once the detector is attached it can still be rotated for finer adjustment.

The companion app is okay as far as smart home apps go, although it had trouble with my postcode format despite my location being set to UK. I ended up punching in a postcode I knew from a few miles away, which it accepted. I don’t want my smoke alarm knowing where I live anyway.

The rest of the setup was painless and once the initial self-test was completed you’re not really left with anything further to do. The alarm is loud and very similar to a non-smart detector alarm sound.

The (default setting) pathlight I found initially underwhelming, but it comes into its own in pitch-darkness. It’s still very dim, but going from no light to some light is a useful feature. I’m really not sure how effective this would be in a smokey atmosphere, and hopefully I’ll never find out, but in my mind I see this as an everyday convenience rather than a selling point safety feature.

100 does seem a bit expensive for a smoke alarm, but to be honest I didnt get much change from 50 when I last bought a ‘dumb’ smoke and CO detector. If it lasts the rated 10 years, that’s 10/year + batteries, which is really not a huge price to pay for something that could potentially save your life.

I really like the fact it self-tests regularly and will report any problems automatically. Admittedly, my other smoke alarm only ever got ‘tested’ when I burned the bacon or made teriyaki chicken, so if you can put a price on peace of mind you could make the argument that these detectors are good value.

I’m going to see how this detector goes, and as long as it doesn’t eat through batteries I’ll probably end up buying another one for upstairs based on my experience so far.

    So far, so good.

Update: I had this a few months now and still going strong. But one thing I don’t like is it seems silencing an alarm from your smartphone has to be done via Bluetooth. I don’t have Bluetooth enabled on my phone, so this is a pain, and it’s actually easier for me to reach and press the button on the alarm itself. A nitpick maybe, but worth mentioning.

Having had a Nest thermostat for a couple of years and a faulty smoke detector, I took the plunge and bought what could be the most expensive smoke alarm on the market.
The Protect was easy to install on the ceiling, coming with a fixing plate and screws. It also comes with batteries, pop them in, connect to my phone and it ran a few tests, then it was ready to pop onto the plate and leave it to do its work.

I love the fact you get a notification in the Nest app when the alarm detects smoke, it hasn’t happened yet, but if it did when I wasn’t at home I could check it out on my security camera and deal with any emergency there and then. It has happened when I have been at home though, with smoke from the kitchen while grilling sausages. You hear a loud voice from the Protect telling you there’s smoke, and in case you have multiple units, it tells you which room the smoke is in. This also comes up on the app. You’ve then got the option to silencing the Protect via the app before the full alarm sounds.

The nightlight is another great feature, it’s not torch light but it is bright enough to help you see where you’re going late at night with the lights off. I’m not sure how powerful it’d be if the house was filled with smoke though.
The unit performs a self test once a month to check its alarms are working (smoke and CO2), and lets you know via the app when the test is complete. It also checks it batteries and will notify you if they need changing.

The most unusual thing about this alarm though? Never before have I had guests commenting about my smoke alarm. Even up on the ceiling its an eye catcher and a number of visitors have mentioned how good it looks!
