    Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersBrought during the Prime Day sale, got it for 95, and fitted it myself, quite straight forward, if you have a good electrical understanding. Bough Gray surround, A’s the white standard one looks cheap and nasty. Works well with Alexa, once you remember the correct words to use when speaking to Alexa. We had to upgrade as our old thermostat kept flipping to 14 degrees when we needed it around 20 in the winter. Now it can be done using our phones or the cool little thermostat on the wall. Looks really smart and was really easy to set up on our own.

    I bought this during prime day, the heating only version didn’t have an option to buy with the instal by British gas so I took a gamble as I’m an engineer with electrical knowledge. When it arrived and I went to install the receiver I noticed that my current wiring wasnt the same as what was needed ((only 3 wires (neutral live and switchlive) and a link wire)) after wrapping my head for half hour I managed to figure out that the link in my old receiver was a link between live and common. I fitted the hive receiver with this arrangement and it works fine, cant wait to use it when winter comes and the temp drops

    This replaced a wireless thermostat which has been installed for 12 years. Installing the Hive was not complicated but needs very careful approach and not fir an amateur electrician. The effect of the Hive has dramatically improved the comforts as far as temperature is concerned. The ability to control the heating remotely from the phone is a real bonus.

    I bought this as a self installation package. It was very easy to install, took me about 30 minutes and most of that time was taken by guding a length of cable along the hidden space above the kitchen cabinets. Everything connected first time. Making a schedule on my PC or on the phone app is incredibly easy to do. I’m very impressed with it so far, I even get alerts when I leave the house telling me what the heating is set at. It’s also easy to control using Alexa.

    Fantastic piece of kit.

    After some faffing about trying to wire this from previous receiver, managed to get there in the end, from package to working, about 2hrs however I’m not an electrician and just followed what others had done online. Seems to be working very well even though Alexa doesn’t recognise it still (yes, i have accessed the skill). It’s great that you can schedule it day on day and geofenced it so when I leave the house it goes off and doesn’t come back on until I return home which should cut costs down hopefully, all in all, very pleased!

    Works well, looks better than most thermostats too. Only four stars because I was expecting it to be movable around the flat – it is, but only by removing the back plate so you have to be a bit careful with the batteries. I believe they sell you a separate stand but at this price I would hope that was included. Bloke who installed it was a 10/10 as well.

    Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersBeen considering HIVE or Nest for a while but found it difficult to convince the other half of its uses. However, took the plunge during Black Friday week and went for purchase only and arranged for our own local fitting, though it is like wiring a plug so you could be brave and try yourself; for 50 installation I preferred to get it done professionally. Sod’s law, I ordered and my boiler ended up condemned and needed replaced at an undesirable cost the week before Christmas but is why I’d taken some time to write this review.

    The kit we bought comes in three parts so one replaces your current unit that connects to the boiler, one plugs in to your router and the other is the digital display that acts as your thermostat, albeit the latter is largely redundant if you use the app. We had no installation issues and it has worked flawlessly since that installation.

    Whilst this doesn’t have the learning capabilities of Nest, it more than meets our needs with the various options for scheduling and quick boosts. The ability to do all this from the comfort of your chair or when you are out and about is fantastic and, believe it or not, it’s the Mrs that uses this more than me so a total convert.

    What I do notice is once the optimum temperature is reached, HIVE maintains this so regulates the radiators rather than have them still pouring out heat until a time when you think ‘this house is jumping with heat’, surely that must reduce our bills but time will tell.

    This was bought as a present for my partner who is determined to have an all smart home. The fitting of the product was done by us and was surprisingly straight forward but did take a lot of planning! We did have trouble linking all the parts and so I would probably suggest to include the fitting if it’s a good price. The actual product is great! It looks much better than a standard thermostat. However we tend to control the heating via our app or Alexa, both of which are responsive. For me, the benefits of having the hive are being able to control the heating whilst out of the house. So often we wasted money by having the heating programmed and being on whilst we were out. So this hopefully will be able to save us money and still ensure a lovely warm house for when we get home from work!

Simple to replace an existing wireless receiver with the one provided, but if this is your first wireless setup you’d definitely need proper installation. I have a combi boiler with an internet-enabled control (Hive 1?) but it doesn’t get all features of Hive. Upgrading to Hive 2 is relative easy on the hardware part. However, you still need to swap out the hub, receiver and thermostat as British Gas has changed everything.

    My old receiver is a British Gas WR1 which has a compatible backplate with the new Hive receiver. Just power off, take out the old receiver, and put the new one onto the old backplate. That was easy.

    The new Hive 2 thermostat is also super easy to set up.

    Changing the hub takes some effort. First, the new Hive hub takes a while to get to the flashing amber light. The green light must have flashed for 5-10 minutes. Just be patient. However, the really trouble is linking the new Hub to the Hive app/account. There is no easy way to unlink the old nano hub from my existing Hive account, and thus no way to input the new hub ID. I have to phone Hive technical support to do the swap over. Basically they removed the old hub from my account and that initiates the Hive app to ask for the new hub ID. Hive could have made this easier! The support line works 7 days until 9:00pm, which is good. But I still waited > 11 min to get someone on the phone.

    One warning on Google Home integration: Although Google Home claims to work with Hive, the integration is buggy. “Turn heating off” leaves the Hive thermostat in “schedule”, not off, but sets the target temperature to lowest. “Turn heating on” does nothing: Hive is left in schedule mode, with no change in target temperature. That means heating won’t come back on. I chatted with Google Home’s support and they confessed that the features are not working yet. How disappointing? *** However ***, IFTTT comes to the rescue. IFTTT can really turn heating between off and schedule. The shame is that you cannot ask Google Home “what is my home temperature”.

    In conclusion, the weaknesses above are not with the Hive thermostat. It is either British Gas’ or Google’s problem. The product is very good.

    Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI bought the version without professional installation. I’m not a DIY expert but I do enjoy doing the odd bit here and there. The Hive was easy to install – it took me around 15 minutes, the majority of which was waiting for the Hub to connect and update its firmware. My boiler is fairly modern (Vokera 29 Compact) and it only needed 4 wires connecting to the control unit. The app is intuitive and easy to use, as is the physical thermostat. If you’re not mounting it to a wall though, I’d recommend buying a stand; the base of the thermostat has a tab to remove the battery cover and it means it doesn’t stand on it’s own.

    Not that difficult to wire to the boiler, the dedicated hive bits – hub & remote worked 1st time – like things should do

  63. Anonymous says:

    Purchased at a great price in the Black Friday sales with “free” Echo Dot, the Hive is so much better than the standard room stat and 24 hour timer it replaces. The 7 day programmability with up to 6 time slots per day and the ability to set different temperatures for each slot adds so much more control, as does having a thermostat accurate to 0.1 degrees. Setting up scheduling via the app is easy and the extra touches like holiday mode, remote heating control, frost protection and Alexa compatibility are added bonuses.

    Self installation of the receiver as a direct replacement for a wireless receiver was straightforward for a competent home DIYer – just a little thinking and research was required to correctly match the connections. Setup instructions were excellent and easy to follow and everything worked as expected straight out of the box. Decent batteries included for the thermostat too.

    Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersPros: Fairly easy to install and set up (if replacing an existing wireless thermostat.) Trickier if you don’t already have a similar device fitted. Software and web account not too troublesome to set up and pleasantly intuitive to use. Provides some nice features. Some interesting accessories too. I’ve already bought one of the door/window sensors.

    Cons: Thermostat is designed to be wall mounted only, and can only be desktop standing with an additional stand (extra cost.) Receiver unit has a rubbish cord grip and partially open back, and so is not electrically safe unless screwed to the wall and all wiring run through trunking. Compare to Salus iT500, which is completely electrically safe in this respect. ‘Boost’ always seems to set 22 degrees C, regardless of current temperature (you can dial it down on the thermostat, but your next ‘boost’ goes back to 22.) Seemingly boost cannot be cancelled by voice control either. No option for an external power supply and ‘always on’ display on the thermostat itself. Rumour has it that you can never reassign the hub to another user. If you move house and leave the heating controls for the new owner, they have to buy a new hub.

    Product was easy enough to connect to my Valliant ecotec pro boiler. Had up and running in about an hour, but that did include mounting the receiver on the wall next to the boiler. Works as it should, quite simple interface which is easy to use. I especially like the phone app to set /check heating while away. The thermostat back plate could be modified in my opinion though. We don’t mount ours on the wall and carry to different rooms. Trying to stand the thermostat vertically is obstructed by the battery catch, which is annoying (it’s located at the bottom of the thermostat and means the unit won’t sit straight). You could buy the mount stand (which is bulky and an extra cost) or you can simply lie the unit on its back when not in use. A small design change could have fixed this imo. Otherwise great and I have purchased a multzone thermostat that I plan to control my elec underfloor heating with in a few weeks.

    Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersAs someone who is away from the house a lot with work and very erratic finish times, the ability to have the heating switched on from my phone whilst on the way home and to come home to a house that is already warm is a bit of a game changer!

    Also, the annual winter worry of being away from the house when the temperature drops and not being there to turn it on for a while meant that I either carried that worry all weekend or left the heating on a timer heating an empty house when it may not have always been necessary. This unit puts and end to all of that and I’m loving it!

    I fitted two of these in two different houses, one replacing an old timer clock on an oil condensing boiler (the sort where you moved coloured plastic buttons round a circular clock face to set the on and off times) and one replacing an already wireless (but not “smart”) Honeywell thermostat. In both cases it was a doddle to fit the controller unit to the existing wiring (with some changes needing to be made on one of the fittings) and once you understand the wiring, it’s nothing that a semi-competent home DIY’er couldn’t tackle themselves. As always, be careful when working on electrics and be doubly sure that you have isolated the supply before tackling it.

    Highly recommended, works like a charm, all the pieces self-connect and “find” one another once fitted and the convenience is superb – love it!

    My top tip is to create a new email address that you don’t care about and that you will only use for the heating and setting up your Hive account (I used a free Gmail one) – this way, if you ever move house, you don’t need to change any details on your account, you can leave the hub behind and just give the new homeowners your log-on details so they can use the system with all of its features and essentially “take over” your online account without causing you an hassle.

    This is an excellent addition to your smart home. All you need is an engineer to install. Comes with 3 separate components, the thermostat, hive hub and hive receiver. The hive receiver has to be connected by an engineer. There are lots of different ways to use this via the thermostat, alexa or smart phone. It is a bit fiddly to set schedules, but isn’t too bad, compared to the equipment that came originally with our boiler- that was I hasten to add a nitemare to use. This is easy if you have an echo device simply say alexa, ask hive to boost the heating and voila you have heating for 1 hour at 22 degrees(the default), or set a schedule easy. We will be nice and warm all winter thanks to this brilliant device!

    Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersWe received our Hive yesterday and my husband installed it that evening. We were lucky to have already had a (very poor) wireless room stat / programmer fitted so the wiring was already there which made it easier to do. Connecting all of the components needs to be done in a sequence but it’s very straightforward.
    Once it’s connected you need to activate the hub (the bit of kit that plugs into your broadband router) which is done through the Hive website. Again this is an easy process and you’re ready to go.
    Now for the slight moan!! The scheduling interface on the Hive website is abysmal, very counterintuitive and not at all obvious on how to operate. I would thoroughly recommend downloading the phone app and using the scheduler on there. Just a word of advice – you need to put a schedule in for the whole 24 hour period rather than just telling the Hive to come on and switch off at these times. So heating on between 5-6am, off between 6am-4pm, on at 4-8pm and off between 8pm and 5am the next day when it starts over. There is a boost button which turns the heating on for an hour only or else you can tell it to come on manually for however long it takes to get to a specific temperature.
    So far we’re really pleased with the Hive, so much better than the rubbish one we had before where the programmer/time clock didn’t even work. I would recommend it.

    Golden Review Award: 31 From Our UsersThis is an excellent piece of kit. Just a shame that the day I finally got it installed was the hottest day of the year so far and I haven’t really needed this much since. However, the ability to set schedules easily from your computer or phone (love the ability to copy 1 schedule to multiple days) is really useful as is the temporary over-ride to turn on the heating for short (or long) periods of time.
    The hardest part is deciding where to put it.
    I had a slight hic-up when setting it up, think I may have gotten tired of waiting for it to sync and accidentally put it into stand-alone mode. Top Tip, follow the instructions to the letter and don’t try pressing buttons on the receiver connected to the boiler. However, a call to their very helpful support line quickly resolved the problem. If you have a hub and want to connect to the internet and your app then setup the hub first and give it plenty of time to setup.

    Simple to install (except for the interface with the boiler where if you’re not an expert it’s better calling one, all other devices are just plug in and start using them), very intuitive to configure, it also gives Android/Apple app to remote manage your heating from your phone; plus, there is a dashboard from their website to constantly monitor temperature in my place, set up schedules (even easier than from the thermostat itself) and configure ad hoc actions like email me when it’s too cold or set the whole system down in following week as I’ll be on vacation.
    Definitively recommended!

    Great being able to control the temperature remotely. My only ‘gripe’ is that I’m using it in Spain and the time zone is UK, so I have to adjust the times accordingly. Not a major issue but would be great if HIVE could offer the option to change the time zone in the App.

    Very easy to Install (after a little research) and very easy to use. Already saving fuel based on not being in the house.

    Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersInstalled the Hive in my son’s flat and he reports he is very happy with the functionality of the device.

    Installation was relatively straightforward, locating the receiver unit close to the boiler, cabling in the mains and the thermostat wiring without problem. The wifi connection didn’t work first time but after a couple of reboots we got it going and it now works fine.

    Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersNice product and well packaged, bit of a head scratcher reading all the instructions but a live chat to British gas had this pairing up in no time. My main gripe is the fact that the mobile app doesn’t really work for all phones, saying that the current version isn’t compatible with my phone which is a Samsung galaxy s7! They seem to know about it but don’t seem too bothered about getting the app fixed. Luckily you can log in on their main site and save a shortcut to your home screen of your mobile

    Does what its supposed to, looks good. Mate has a Nest and says the whole learning aspect doesnt work anyway so imho this does the rest for a cheaper price.

    Brilliant bit of kit, easy to install with it’s clear instructions and everything you need in the box. Adds a lot of flexibility and convenience to your heating system, especially if you use an Echo device or a Google Assistant device.

    Great product and great price. I went for the heating only version as we have a combi boiler. As we already had a wireless thermostat from British gas it was SO easy to install ourselves. Was up and running in about 30 mins. Working great and now looking out for more hive compatible good to control with the app. Also going to link to Alexa.

    Excellent addition to any household. 4 or 5 friends and family have this. My flat has absolutely changed since I have installed this. No longer do I wake up to a cold and damp bedroom….. Duvets are cosy and so is every single room! Easy to install, from a certain point of view. If in any doubt just get BG to install this bit of kit. Thank you!!

    Simple to install. Just watch a few YouTube videos. Once the hub and various components are linked up it’s easy to use. Looks cool. Nothing to dislike so far!

    Golden Review Award: 78 From Our UsersI purchased the Heating only model and opted to self install.

    After a bit of research online (the manual didn’t help much) I was able to wire it up successfully myself. I have a combi boiler and already had a wireless transmitter (Honeywell CM927 Wireless Thermostat and BDR91 Receiver) so thought swapping out the transmitters would be easy. It was easy but only once I had discovered the correct way to wire up the new Hive back-plate.

    I have attached a picture but for me the wiring went:

    * N to N
    * L to L
    * A to 1
    * B to 3
    * E to Earth Tether

    I can’t guarantee this will work for everyone but all is fine with my setup and it took me less than 15 minutes to do. The rest of the setup is well explained in the documentation.

    This took a bit of work to install. I got my uncle and dad to install it. Unfortunately, it took two days to figure out – but now they’ve done one, I think they know what they’re doing. I think it just depends what background knowledge you have. It’s working perfectly now and it’s so handy to be able to control from my phone wherever I am.

    Installed by British Gas engineer. Was too complicated for me to install. I have to pay 100 pounds plus for the installation. The engineer installed a new one and left me with the set I bought.
    Pleased with the device. Controlling my gas schedule times has become a bliss, all from my iPhone.
    I will reduce my gas bill!

    Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI used to have an old Danfoss Randall thermostat it done the job and lasted numerous years. One of my children accidentally broke the thermostat, so I began to read reviews on different thermostat and wanted one which was durable and easy to use. I looked at several thermostat and the hive one was on sale on Amazon for 124.99 I snapped it up as usually it cost 180. It was very easy to install the wiring plate on my old one was exactly the same as the one on the Hive. With a few simple instructions I had the whole system going. The features on it are exactly the same as you would get on more pricier one such as nest. The app is easy to use, you can set up schedules easily. Have the heating come on when your returning home from work and when your a certain mileage away from home the heating will come. Very clever device definitely recommend this.

    I bought the heating only version with self install and it took me around half an hour to get everything fitted and working, linked the stat to my iPhone and I now have complete control of settings etc from my phone, the stat looks great and I’m happy I chose this over the nest.
    If you have basic understanding of electrics it is very easy to self install and save a bit of money, I got this on a lightning deal from Amazon so got a bargain!

    Excellent piece of equipment. I replaced an old electronic remote thermostat with the hive and the replacement was straight forward, easy to operate and my wife thinks the app for remote operation is brilliant.

    Wow. Why have you not got one of these?! Amazing but if kit. Easy to self install for any self respecting DIYER. Looks amazing and control your heating from your phone. Gone out and left your heating on? No problem, just open the app and turn it off. Set it as you would a normal timer, but increase time, temp or just turn off simply and quickly from your phone. Really can’t rate this enough. I see it had loads of bad press on here – can honestly say I’ve not had any issues at all. Installed it myself following the instructions to the letter and all went fine. Been using it for a few months now and have told everyone I know to get one. Why these aren’t installed in new builds as standard I don’t know! PS mine’s installed on an oil boiler, so don’t just believe it’s for gas only, although BG won’t install it on an oil boiler.
