Great little train. My son loves it. He’s only four and wants to touch it all the time and keeps knocking it off the track. That said, it’s seems durable because of that.

    Very good service
My boy was very upset his train set off Santa was not working. The track didn’t seem to connect properly and the train wouldn’t go around. Replacement easy to sort out, just been delivered and we have set it up straight away and working perfectly. My son is happy that Santa was quick and lives the set! Thank you! Will post replacement back today!

Present wagons heavy. Put on first to stop derailing if extending train, hence double headed se
Presents in wagon come in bare undecorated resin, compared to the yearly issued wagons that are painted. But if you have a steady hand, a small paint brush and a wife with more nail polish than she needs, you can create your own ‘ one off ‘ wagon with a bit of patience. But great value otherwise. If you saw the vid I uploaded, you can see how cool it looked last year. This year it’s triple headed with 8 more wagons. I will post it on here, Xmas 2021 so you can see what you think..!!???

This was a simple gift for my son who is infatuated with trains. Easy to operate and manage. Got it at warehouse prices.

I love the small engine it comes with. It runs very well, it can't pull much due to its size.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersMagical addition to the Christmas Tree
I brought the Santa Express for my granddaughter’s visit at Christmas. It looked great under the Christmas tree. It was easy to put the track together and it ran smoothly and very quietly. The slight issue I had was that because the track was on carpet and not fixed in place, it tended to move. It’s not really a toy and not robust enough for young hands, but it did add that little bit of magic!

Great train set for the Christmas tree
Great fun for the kids and quality train set which will last for years!
Could do with a couple of more straight track pieces (which I purchased later) to fit under large trees

    Very plastic, but cute...
I bought this because i wanted to decorate the Christmas table with something special…
It is very easy to assembly, but everything is plastic, so don’t expect Mrklin quality with this set…
But it is cute and good for children to play with 🙂

Excellent addition to the Christmas decorations around the foot of the tree, I added some spray snow to the carriages add to the effect. Tricky to get aligned on the track first time but once you get it it is easy to do going forward.

Brilliant Christmas train set. Take time to join the track as it is possible to misfit the ends together, as with all model train track. Nearly 60 years since I got my last train set. Really pleased with it. Thoroughly recommended. I am looking forward to adding to it. We’ll done Hornby.

Does what it says. Perfect for the kids
Finally got a Santa’s Express. It’s perfect for what I was wanting. Round the tree, no hassle set up. Bit of fun, but it’s making me want to buy more now. 10/10

    Good Fu
This is a great little train and good fun. It’s a pity it doesn’t have lights, which would be more Christmassy.
A couple of pointers – on the controller you have to set the speed dial to zero before switching between forward and reverse; there is some kind if safety interlock – took me a while to work out.
You have to be careful to get a smooth connection between the rails; not easy and several tries were necessary. This may be why people are complaining of the train derailing.
Overall the construction is not up to Hornby’s usual standards, but remember this is a Christmas toy. What do you expect for 50 quid for a complete train set?

UPDATE: The controller packed up after a few weeks but I opened up the plastic box and fiddled with it and somehow got it to work again.

Nice set to go around a medium sized tree
Nice set which includes a Cheery Red Engine and the first Rolling Stock filled with removable presents , the second Rolling Stock which carries Santa’s Sleigh is Yellow. Disappointingly the actual Sleigh is not included, just a drawing of it on the side of the Wagon.

Excellent value for money and a great running trai
The performance of the engine and the weight of the wagons was a nice surprise. I really didn’t expect it to be so good. I have chosen to use a different controller as I really don’t like the one supplied.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersFantastic Christmas Decoration, Not a great toy.
Originally bought this train as a Christmas decoration to run around the Christmas tree. As with all Hornby products the quality is fantastic for the price. I would expect to pay double easily for something like this.

First and foremost I think it is important to note this isn’t designed to be a children’s toy, it is not designed to be super durable, there are correct ways to put the wagons on a track and the train is designed to be operated at low speeds. A child will enjoy this for a short period of time, but as just an oval and with the newer gear ratios this isn’t the most fun Hornby set out there.

The new 040 train is slower, but feels stable going round the track, something which is ideal at the foot of a christmas tree. I wouldn’t buy this to play with as a model train set at all. Unfortunately the wagon’s wheels are all plastic which increases drag quite a lot and are costly to upgrade, but for most people this will be fine.

Happy with my purchase, but would feel sorry for any child who was hoping to play with it any more than watching it around a tree.

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersGreat fun at christmas
I had some Hornby trains when I was younger and really enjoyed playing with it. I brought a cheap transit from B&M and found it horrible and cheap and tacky. It was not the experience I remember so went straight on amazon and brought this set.
I was like a child when this turned up and I got home from work. I couldn’t wait to rip the packet open and set it up which I did there and then. I had great fun setting it up and sending it round the track.
Everyone that came round over the christmas period commented on how great it was and we even had it hooked up to a smart plug so could turn it on on demand.
Great value for money and good fun for all ages

Looks amazing around the Christmas tree and good fun to play with even after Christmas though the actual set itself doesn’t leave much in the way of expansion so you can buy additional track for it just make sure you buy the correct extension packs to be able to extend the voltage.
The locomotive is reliable it goes fast enough but not so fast that it will fly off the track and brake itself you can send it around at full speed it has fairly decent pulling power and looks nice and it’s cute little Santa’s Express design the couplings are standard Hornby couplings so extensions to your rolling stock is possible

Train was a good price considering it’s branded name, track was tricky to piece together for the kids but I know this is because the connectors need to be very tight. Speed operating device is a little flimsy and we all found it hard to balance the train with its carriages on the track.

Quality and quiet small train. Easy to assemble and stays on track fairly well. My 5 year old enjoys using the controller to speed up or slow down the engine and cars.

My 7year old is train mad and he had this for Christmas. He loves it and it was easy to put together and looks really lovely. We’ve recently made a table and screwed down the controller, he’s started to build stuff around it, proper model railway. Well built and my boy is getting on with it really well.

Very good stater set for under the xmas tree. Only problem was the wagon couldn’t pull any extra carriages you may have, or purchase in the future. Ordered a better wagon in the end and sold the Santa one on ! Great value se

    A little bit over priced
Bought for the base of the Christmas tree was brilliant, bit over priced. Quality train set and my daughter has lots of fun playing with it. I wouldn’t treat it as a toy for kids or you’ll be constantly putting it back on the track for them, bit fiddly, but good for them to watch and play with the speed setting.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGood but needs setup though
Bought for Christmas tree. It wasn’t all plain sailing. The train came off the track lots because we couldn’t pin the track to anything. Nothing wrong with the item but it could have included some innovative method for securing the track for occasional users like us.

I wish I had bought the Lego city train which seemed more stable.

    Good product in any case.

The Santa Express is a fantastic little train set.
I’ve read quite a few bad reviews, but in my opinion, they are utter rubbish.
I have mine running for hours on end, without a problem.
If it gets a bit jittery or stops completely, just give the track a clean or give the train a nudge to send it on it’s merry way.
    Five stars, all the way.

Much of the negative feedback always amuses me as expectations are so unrealistic. Value for money and set up properly this a great fun set which is robust and happily has run quietly round the base of our tree for hours. The grandchildren love it and that is what counts. It is certainly not for the purest nor is it intended to be. Equally the loco is not top notch but any of the quality locos in the Hornby or any other makers range are at least double the price of this set alone without any rolling stock, track or a controller. Get real ! Buy with confidence.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersFantastic Christmas set from Hornby👍
The set arrived the next day delivered in nick condition by Amazon.
I bought it at a bargain price, and for once, Amazon out did Hattons on price.
A lovely Christmas set from Hornby comprising of an 0-4-0 loco, an open wagon filled with presents and a carriage for Santa’s sleigh, plus an oval of tack transformer and a controller.
It didn’t come with a track mat and came with the old style controller from Hornby.
I’ve not had the set out the box yet as I still haven’t put me tree up, so can’t say how well she runs. She does look nice though! As soon as I get her running round me tree I’ll upload a vid!
    Chow for now!
