Hornby R3828 British Railways, 60163 Tornado The Aberdonian Train Pack – Era 11 Locomotive – Steam

About Hornby

Frank Hornby put the invention into production under the name ‘Mechanics Made Easy’. This led to the establishment of Meccano Ltd in 1907. Frank Hornby had to regularly move his factory to new and larger premises. Hornby introduce toy trains in 1920. Hornby Trains were powered by a clockwork motor, made of metal pressings held together by Meccano nuts and bolts, and ‘0’ gauge in size. The company was quick to introduce more engines and accessories. In 1925 the first Hornby electric train was produced, operating from a mains supply of 100-250 volts. By 1929, Hornby had evolved a much safer system and electric models worked from a six volt DC source.

Fastest locomotive I own, outpacing my A4 significantly. Runs smoothly, haven’t had a problem with it. The coaches also run smooth. They’ll roll like they’re weightless. This is my best Hornby set for sure

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersArrived quickly unfortunately the box is damaged but the set is good and what you would expect from a new Hornby.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis is a fantastic train pack. The locomotive alone is worth it. It is very heavy, and that is partly down to the fact it has a flywheel, which means the loco slows down and speeds up a lot more realistically (even on DC). I have only just run it in but I would imagine it could pull upwards of 20+ Coaches on straight and level track (with ease).

Finally, the coaches are what you’d expect from Hornby. Designed and manufactured to a great standard.

I could recommend this train pack enough.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFirst of all, this is an excellent value for money train package. The Tornado locomotive itself is good quality and runs superbly on the track. The carriages themselve are of equal quality and construction and detail. The train was supplied by Cheltenham Model Centre. It arrived a week before the estimated delivery date and was well packaged. Delighted to receiving the delivery early, l was slighty disappointed when l unpacked the train to find one of the carriage couplings missing (hence 4 stars instead of 5). While this has nothing to do with Cheltenham Model Centre and more to with Hornby’s quality control, l contacted Cheltenham Model Centre. They asked me to provide photos of the missing part and they would see what they could do, which l did but l”m still waiting to hear back from them. However, don’t let my slight disappointment from putting you off buying what is an excellent model train and gives you more bang for your buck if you were just buying a locomotive for an equivalent price. Regarding the review, l don’t know what the stretch or sheerness ratings have to do with a model train, so l haven’t rated them. All-in-all a good product for the price. I hope this review is helpful.
