The LifeSaver Jerrycan is in a world of its own when it comes to portable water purification. Its ability to store 18.5 litres of water from questionable sources and purify up to 20,000 litres in its life-time, make this Jerrycan the perfect companion for Overlanders, those living the ‘Van Life’, Campers or Preppers.

Mil-Spec Certification
Our LifeSaver Jerrycans are now Mil-Spec, having passed the most stringent testing in portable water purification, NSF P248. The NSF Protocol P248 was developed with the U.S. Army Public Health Command (USAPHC) based on the EPA Guide Standard, with the goal of providing deployed military personnel the capability to produce sustainable quantities of safe drinking water in any environment.
We achieved compliance after rigorous testing of our Jerrycan product, which tested multiple units beyond 5,000 litres of extreme sustained usage. P248 testing uses two strains of virus to ensure effective removal by the filtration system and pushes filters to the point of clogging to make sure they continue to protect the user after this occurs, effectively measuring the filter’s failsafe technology. Our filters didn’t clog within the testing period and no replacement cartridges were required to finish the test, meaning the filters had to be artificially clogged to test the product’s FailSafe claims.

A LifeSaver Jerrycan Shower Head Attachment (sold separately) comes in very handy when you’re camping or living off grid for a while. Because the Jerrycan being can be pressurised, it can be used to wash yourself or clean pots.

Firstly, I’ve only filled it once for a one night camping trip, worked wonders, I like the design and durability, this would be great for truck camping/ RVing, offgrid living, etc. not recommended for backpacking.. it’s heavy. If you’re looking at this I recommend getting the one that comes with the hose, you could shower with this! The water pressure is amazing.
The first thing you want in a disaster is clean water and shelter from elements. This will provide plenty of clean water and you don’t have to stack plastic bottles that are bad for the environment if single use. Keep a rain barrel or two hooked up to your downspout and you are ready. In dry months you can put a bucket under your shower when waiting for water to warm up (clean water) and then dump that daily in your rain barrel for emergency supply fill up. You might also look at this company’s portable bottle. Good if you have to move and can not carry bigger device with you.
The pump is great and product solidly built As with all my gear that have screw on caps or connections, I lube the threads with https://smile.amazon.com/Hayward-SPX0327-1-Ounce-Jacks-Multilube/dp/B00CG4GMTG/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=pool+lube&qid=1568058432&s=gateway&sr=8-5 to prevent any leakage.
Very happy with the quality of this product. Very confident it does what it claims to do. It works great.
Has been sitting, waiting, for 2 years now. One day I’ll need it, and then I’ll wish I could have given it 10/5 stars.
This is perhaps the best investment you can make.
I haven’t used this yet as it is in my earthquake kit here in California. I have talked to others who have use it and they are impressed. I am hoping to not have to use it but we will see.
Inventive, functional and potable. I love this product. I bought two of the lifesaver Jerry cans and couldn’t be happier.
The Lifesaver system is probably the best CBRN water filter commercially available. Even the bacterial reduction performance shows a very impressive Log 7.5 reduction. In reality that is getting to the point when no individual bacteria can be measured passing through the filter. Other conventional filters including UV systems such as the Steripen are being measured in Log 3-4 reduction i.e. Hundreds to thousands of times less effective.
Filter lifetime seems to be impressive as well available in 10,000 and 20,000 liter capacity. For a family of 4 that would mean over 660/1320 gallons or 660/1320 days continuous use. (assuming 1 gallon of drinking water per person per day and depending on which filter used).
When comparing the cost of the Lifesaver Jerry Can against other filtration systems such as the Katadyn Expedition or Endurance grade filters with the additional expense of a UV system that would be needed for the deactivation of viruses and even the water carrier itself i.e. the actual Jerry Can that would be required to transport it, then the Lifesaver Jerry Can is probably very cost effective considering the claimed performance. The Lifesaver Jerry Can will perform all three steps in one simple device.
It also works excellent for car a or vehicle camping water filter and storage solution as well as a device which can be tucked away unused in the garage or basement ready for a domestic water emergency (domestic water supply availability is subject to electrical power outages in many areas).
Enough theory, how does it work? Well, it works flawlessly! I have used this system a dozen or so times while SUV camping, hunting and even once during a water boil advisory when the power was out and there was no way for me to boil the water (thanks to hurricane Sandy) Another use I managed to find for this is a pressurized camp shower! Lifesaver makes a shower attachment and the dark blue color of the 20,000 liter unit is dark enough to heat the water significantly when left in the sun. You could imagine the relief of a semi hot, pressurized camp shower.
Summary:
The unit is effective against 99.9% of all bacteria, virus and even claimed to be effective against chemical and radiological hazards.
There is an added benefit to a camp shower when desired. That is a major perk for me.
In the space of one Jerry Can, which is how I already store water, I now have filtering capability.
Simple to use. Fill, pump, drink.
DURABLE, DURABLE, DURABLE!
The cost is steep, but put it into perspective:
1 Jerry can ~ $50.00
1 Name brand filter ~ $150.00
1 Steripen ~ 100.00
—————————–
Total cost of 3 items needed to be as effective as one Lifesaver? $300.00
Total space/weight savings = priceless
Overall this is a SOLID 5 STAR ITEM. I look forward to many years of use from this device and so far it has served quite handy.
The price I paid here on Amazon was higher than if I purchased direct from LifesaverSystems (I discovered only after I used the Jerry can).
I don’t know yet how it does so much with what appears to be a rather simple filter, but I’ve processed some mildly turbid water from a less than mountain pure source (lower Tonto Creek while on a trip) and not only am I still here, but I will continue to test it on progressively worse sources until I trust it for just about anything.
I certainly prefer the lifesaver over gravity filters, however I do hope they make some minor changes to the shape of the Jerrycan,or provide “feet” to make the can it bit more stable (it rocks left to right while sitting upright)
Bottom line is that, so far, I would recommend this filtration system to friends and family. I simply wish that it was a bit less expensive and that the other Lifesaver products were available on Amazon (not much available here as of July 2013)
Once I got it, (was super-amazed at the lightspeed delivery from the UK) I of course opened up and checked it out. Usually, I don’t like to read instructions, but in this case decided it might be helpful, and luckily I did. When you go to use it for the first time, you need to prime it and clean it out. The whole set up process took maybe 5 minutes, and now I am ready to filter 5,300 gallons of water when I go camping. I imagine it will take quite a while to use that amount, but it is nice to know that it is there when I need it.
I used it all through the summer on camping trips in tents, campers and my RV. It preformed flawlessly, whether filtering lake water or pond water or rain water it did it’s job and kept me and up to 7 other people hydrated through some pretty long camping trips.
After the season was over, I unpacked it, cleaned it thoroughly (as per the instructions) and put it in my kitchen for the winter.
It was about mid winter when my wife decided to start buying bottled water (she is pregnant with our second child) well I had the bright idea to start filtering our tap water with the lifesaver and at just a cent or two per liter, man was that a great idea! Clean, pure drinking water made right there in our kitchen! We filter a gallon or two at a time and just top off the Jerry can each time we use it.
I am telling you, this unit is amazing, if you keep the carbon filters changed every so often then you will have the best drinking water available.
And talk about easy to use! My 2 year old girl thinks it’s a game, she pumps it for us whenever we will let her and she fills the 1 gallon jugs that we keep in the fridge for drinking. How about that!
I mean it is practically effortless and anyone can learn to use it properly in just about a minute.
If you are looking for a great “base camp” water filter like I was when I found the life saver jerrycan, then this is the unit for you, and if you are looking for a family sized water filter for survivalism then this is the unit for you, but most importantly if you are looking for a quick, easy way to provide yourself and your family with clean, fresh, pure drinking water every day and in any situation…
Then this is the unit for you!
