    It's a Lodge.
Basically it is a pre-seasoned cast iron skillet. I have had this for a little over a month and cooked many things in it, some I quite possibly shouldn’t have. A little soak in hot water with a drop of dish washing liquid and it comes clean. I re-oil it with a tablespoon of olive oil and a paper towel. This is a pan I look forward to owning for decades and it will only get better. Gorgeous pan and very happy with the purchase.

    Worth paying for!
Absolutely excellent product. I have 3 now, two large and one small. I had always bought cheap and replaced often, which in the long run works out more expensive and there is no comparison in quality. Even when the cheap pans are knew, they don’t work as well as these. I love how I can get the pans really hot and get a good sear on meat. No scrubbing to get them clean either. I always use a paper towel to dry them straight away, as they can tend to leave a little black residue on a tea towel and rub a little cooking oil in to keep them seasoned. I think I’ll be passing these down to the next generation.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersNice smaller size cast iron pan.
I had bought a larger one which was wobbly on its base, but this one sits firmly on my flat hob. There is a little unevenness in the heating but negligible and once it’s got fully up to temperature there are no problems. I treated it with oil before using it and will do so after every use. Good so far.

    Cast Iron Skillet, great cooking.
Use this cast iron skillet for oven cooking cornbread. Gives a great result when preheated in oven before adding batter. Cornbread doesn’t stick, needs seasoning before first use.

Heavy iron cast with good quality. Do take into account the weight so not for pancakes as not possible to lift but excellent for any other fry veg, meat and eggs… Unfortunately the handle red cover dose not completely protect you from heat so you will need extra protection if you need to lift up hot cas

As good as equivalent size le Creuset skillet (at a fraction of the price)
I find it as good as my equivalent size le Creuset skillet; this pan is possibly more non-stick for delicate foods.
This is a very small, deep pan – it cooks even delicate foods like eggs/ omelette beautifully without sticking as long as the pan is hot before adding eggs (same principle for fish). I like cast iron as it can compensate for my gas hob that doesn’t heat well. The pre-seasoning is good; the handle gets very hot so you definitely need good oven mitts or a silicone handle cover.
Care is minimal (quick wash and dry or rub with cloth) but essential to do immediately after use or the pan may rust (and never soak, or leave wet or on a wet surface or you’ll have rust stains everywhere!). Having said that, even bad rust in a cast iron pan is relatively easy to remedy with vinegar and steel wool (lots of youtube clips!).
It’s useful to season cast iron every now and again (a couple of times a year), which is a very simple task: clean well (with steel wool or an abrasive if necessary), rub inside and out with grapeseed/soy/sunflower oil, bake for half an hour at 225 C/450F, turn off oven and leave to cool. Rub off any excess oil and store in a dry place.
Successive seasonings (3-4 over a few days) certainly improve non-stick properties in cast iron cookware, but I find that they generally aren’t necessary with this brand.

Excellent Skillet, silicon handle sleeve not very good.
Disappointed with the packaging, a single box with no packing. Surprised it survived the trip from across the pond. That said I really like this skillet although pre-seasoned I reseasoned it twice more. No problem with food sticking ,food cooks evenly. I cook on a ceramic glass job no scratches apparent , worth checking the bottom of the pan before cooking to ensure no flaws that could cause scratches. This is quite a heavy pan , weight is about eight pounds empty. The silicon handle sleeve seems oversized for the handle and doesn’t feel secure. I prefer to use a cloth instead. I will be ordering the 10″.

If I read reviews I would hesitate to buy. No it’s not super smooth as other stated comparing to pan for 120, but nothing sticks to it so no complaints there. Pre seasoned was well from factory and it is good since. It’s easy to clean.
Overall you have to put an effort to keep it going from time to time. But it’s totally worth it as for comparison our tefal pans are lasting usually couple of months before they deformed. Then coating started to come off. So iron is better overall, heat it up first then cook in it like you would do with the oven. In process of buying more sizes to replace all modern teflon pans.

Great piece of cookware. Ready to use straight out the box, I haven’t got around to seasoning it myself yet and despite this it’s still got decent non stick. It is very heavy (as expected) but lifting from both sides of it makes it easy enough to lift. One thing is I wish there was a little silicone protector for the small side handle as well as the main handle but you can still just use an oven glove/ tea towel and it’s fine. Very well made, fun to cook with and allows for even cooking.

This thing does not work on my induction hob. It also feels way too light to be real cast iron. I have my suspicions it isn’t! Will be returning.

Since writing this initial review I thought I’d give this little pan another go. It turns out that the main ring I use on my induction hob may have it’s magnets (or whatever they are) too far spaced out for the pan to get any heat. So I tried it on a smaller ring and it worked just fine.

So I’ve changed from a 1 star to 5. I can’t think of a reason to drop any stars as it does exactly what I bought it for – frying an egg!

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersWhy 4 stars and not 5
I do not use Teflon and never have, but find frying eggs a challenge. I thought I would start with a little 8 inch Lodge skillet to see if I liked it. I had an unseasoned Cast Iron pan that I bought in the UK in the 1980s. It came covered in grease and had to be cooked in the oven with potato peelings before seasoning. I had that pan for years and could cook anything in it including scrambled eggs. I dropped it on the floor and it broke into 2 pieces. I went abroad and then when I returned home to the UK I could not find an unseasoned cast iron skillet. Years later I have just seen these Lodge pans and thought they might answer. I have followed Cowboy Kent Rollins’ (Youtube) advice and have lightly sanded the base and sides down with a mouse sander and 80 grit paper. I then did 4 bakings with flax seed oil. The pan is totally non-stick. I made some Cornbread in it which just fell out. I have also purchased the 10.25″ Skillet and will treat it the same way.

All this said I am not convinced that the pans I have received are not seconds. They are very rough with dents and chips on the edge and pits in the base. I actually wonder if the reason they are cheap is that the European market is being fobbed off with their seconds. I could be wrong, but the US reviews do not seem to mention these faults. However once properly seasoned these will be fantastic pans for my purposes. I have an Aga and they seem to work will on it and can easily be pre-heated in the oven to bring up to heat and dishes can be transferred into the oven for finishing.

It must be born in mind that when cooking with cast iron, always heat the pan for at least 3 – 5 minutes on a very moderate heat and then add oil or fat of your choice and then add the food. It is the heat of the pan that cooks the food, not the heat source.

Many Brits seem to struggle with the care and cleaning of unenamelled cast iron. The secret is to run the hot pan under very hot water (steam) and rub off the bits with a wooden spatula, dry immediately, re-heat on the stove to completely dry and then re-oil very lightly to prevent rust. Do not use soap of scratchy scourers. It does not take a minute.

It still remains a mystery to me what happened to all the British manufacturers of Cast Iron cookware which must have existed. Britain abounded with foundries in the 19th century. I suppose all such pans were handed in during the wars which is why there is very little in the way of second hand skillets to be found in flea markets.

Heard good things about Lodge and wasn’t disappointed with my purchase. It takes time to clean and oil it after use but well worth the effort to care for a quality product. Teamed it up with a cast iron pan stand which has made it a great oven to table item. Want a larger one but they are out of stock so will have to be patient. Highly recommend this fantastic product.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our Users(8" Skillet) A beautiful pan, be careful of sizing
This is my third cast iron pan. I decided to go with Lodge as they are considered a premium brand. My previous pan was a large (12″) skillet but the quality of the finish is not great and the base is quite thin.

This pan does not disappoint, the seasoning is good but the surface is quite rough (a side effect of modern pans). Although my experience with seasoning is that once I have applied a few coats of good quality organic flax oil and baked in that the roughness doesn’t really impact the non stick properties that much, and after a period of good usage can fry eggs nicely.

My one comment would be to be very careful on measurements. Some companies show measurements for the base of the pan, and some for the rim. The 8″ lodge pan has a base measurement of about 6.5″ and a rim-rim measurement of 8″. This caught me out as this differed to my previous pans which were advertised based upon their base size – and I expected the pan to be larger. I recommend going to the lodge website for proper measurements, although whilst they show dimensions they don’t explicitly show the base size – which if you are measuring for a specific hob burner doesn’t help greatly.

I will be buying an additional 10.25″ pan (which I suspect has a base of around 9″) as this is better for my intended purposes. I would recommend the brand though, it is head and shoulders above my other two pans in terms of quality.

I trust Lodge to provide a product that I trust and a seasoned skillet that has no harmful chemicals, fulfilled by Amazon global serv, not a third party. There was a little medium deep rust patch that unfortunately has not filled after my first seasoning but I know this is a good solid item from Lodge and imperfections are nothing to worry about as it is all safe iron.

Cast iron pans aren’t for everyone but if looked after they do last a lifetime or two and this pan is up there with the best.
Only things to remember is it is very heavy for one hand lifting so take that into account or perhaps check the chef collection which are lighter. And remember SEASON SEASON SEASON, once your pan has a few layers washing it becomes as sinple as running under hot water with a gentle wipe and no scrubbing or soap etc.

Golden Review Award: 37 From Our UsersExcellent (but needs some love)
This a very handy ‘little’ pan to have.

A quick note on cleaning however as I have seen some negative reviews and feel compelled to defend the product.

Yes, iron pans need some TLC to get the most out of them, but they are so versatile, it’s worth the effort in my view.

I do the following to keep mine working.

Straight after cooking I heat it up high for 10 seconds or so then poor warm water in from the kettle to about half a cm deep.

I then ‘deglaze’ the pan while the water bubbles away.

Depending on how messy the pan has become depends on how long this will take – eggs and bacon, no more than a few seconds – fruit crumble – maybe 30 seconds or so – but it will always come clean.

I then rinse it in the sink, dry it, then pop it back on the heat again to dry out the pan and get it warm again. Once warm (not hot) I put about a teaspoon of ground nut oil (or any other high heat oil) and then wipe it all over the pan with a kitchen tissue and take it off the heat.

I then leave the pan to cool down. Once cool, I wipe off the surplus oil and I am left with a very versatile, almost non stick kitchen ‘powerhouse’ tool.

Have a search on Google for how versatile any cast iron cookware can be if properly looked after.

I would say, if you know you aren’t going to follow the little routine mentioned above (honestly though, it takes so little time once you get used to using it) then steer clear of any cast iron cookware.

It works. Watch some videos on how to care for the surface and it works as well as a non-stick. Applied non-stick coatings only really work when they are brand new and eventually wear off completely. This is infinitely renewable. It is heavy. I’d recommend not buying the biggest “in case one day we might need it.” But one the size you’ll use most often.

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersFab pan should last a lifetime
These are great pans, please ignore the low ratings as these have been given by people wno don’t know how to treat cast iron.

To get the best out of it when you first get it give it a good scrub in hot soapy water the factory seasoning is OK but not great so we will see to that next (this should be the only time you use soap).
Next dry it and coat the whole thing in a thin layer of either vegetable shorting or rapeseed oil then cook it in the oven upside down for at least a hour, repeat as many times as you like the more you do the better the non stick of the coating. (Any more than 5 times is probably overkill)

After use while it’s still warm for light soiling just wipe it out with a paper towel, medium soiling add a bit of salt and scrub it with a paper towel make sure to remove all salt. Heavey soiling under hot water use a plastic scraper or chain mail scrubber.

Then dry and heat the pan and coat with a thin layer all over then heat till it smokes and that’s it let it cool and put it away.

Not sure why I bought it – just as some sort of weird completionist thing (I have about 5 lodge pans). I have fried a singular tofu chicken nugget in it – and it did the job admirably…but the nugget was horrible – tofu ain’t my thing. I suppose it would be possible to fry a quails egg in this, or a small mushroom.

Love this pan. I use it mostly for toasting veggies (no oil) and spices, frying and even put it in the oven to bake in it once. Also looks great on the kitchen table, but make sure it cools down a bit — it keeps quite hot for much longer than stainless steel pans. It’s fairly non-stick — no issues with fried eggs or chicken breast (meat should be at room temp and it releases easily after a bit of cooking).

Cast iron is much easier to maintain than I thought. For cleaning I use a brush with plastic bristles and water — that usually gets burnt bits out. If that doesn’t help, I resolve to a stainless steel scourer (Spontex) which never fails to clean the pan without much effort. After washing, I always put it back on the hob and dry it on the flame, and that’s it. If I use a scourer I would put a bit of oil, swirl it, and leave it on the flame until smoking hot.

The 9″ is a great size for couples or for cooking side dishes.

I got this skillet to replace my much loved and used Elizabeth McKellar cast iron baking girdle; which alas does not work well on an electric cooker, which I am now forced to use.
Although, this is small I got it for a test run. The first time I tried to make an omelet it was a disaster. Everything stuck. Dealing I did not have the pan hot enough I tried again. I turned the heat up full, put a blob of butter in the skillet to melt an cover the entire surface and put in the egg mixture. This time it did not stick at all and the flavour is gorgeous.
I found the Ajax scourers the easiest way to clean cast iron without soap and just hot water. After cleaning and while it’s still warm and bone dry, I rub a little sunflower oil onto the skillet. Wipe off the excess with a paper towel and leave it to air. No problem, no smell.

    Yes it is non stick.
Having read other reviews I felt the need to comment. Used properly and seasoned and oiled after use this pan will fry eggs without sticking. The dimension of 6.5 inches is measured across the pan from lip to lip. The lips slope out so obviously the diameter of the base will be smaller. The handle will get hot so buy one of the silicone handle covers or use a tea towel. This pan will out last you. It does not pollute your food with chemicals unlike non-stick coated pans.

We love cooking in cast iron and this is the MOTHER of all skillets. Huge and HEAVY, but BOY is it a pleasure to use. The small handle on the opposite side of the “normal” one is a god-sent and rather essential. This pan is very heavy when empty, but with food in it, it is virtually impossible to handle with one hand. As with all cast-iron pans though, the heat distribution is fabulous, so food cooks nice and evenly rather than burning in the middle and not cooking along the edges. Highly recommended.

Love it. Quite small but cooks like magic. Quite some smoke but it is hot and retains heat.

    Lodge pans need re seasoning!
Watching a YouTube video quickly rectified any issue with food sticking. I found it best to sand off some pre seasoning on the pan with 80 grit sandpaper (only so some silver shows through). This will smoothen out the pan. Then re season following the video. I used standard vegetable oil and now can cook eggs with no trouble!

    Very good quality
Very good product, heavy duty, easy to clean with the right tools. You’ll need to buy a scraper and a handle cover if you want as the handle gets very hot. You also need to season it after using it. Quite heavy too. If you can put up with all of that then this is a very good purchase.

It doesn't get better. And this is a perfect size for 2 steaks or a full meal for a person.
There’s really nothing more to be said. It s a very well made skillet and came well seasoned. After 5 or 6 meals, the seasoning got better (I use olive oil to keep it) and even an egg doesn’t stick to it.

    Cast Iron Love
A great little pan for re-heating things, searing and general cooking. It is on the small side, so more of a personal pan: good for preparing a single (medium-sized) pork chop or burger patty – or for reheating a meal for one. Easy to store, easy to clean, easy to maintain – just make sure you look up how to care properly for this little beauty and you’ll get years out of her.

Nothing beats a cast iron pan!
Bought the smaller one a year ago, that one is brilliant for most meals as I am usually by myself. This bigger one is equally brilliant for those times I cook for more people, or am cooking dishes that require different pans. Absolutely brilliant pan! The one thing to be aware of is that since it is cast iron it’s a bit more heavy than a teflon pan, for example, but I much prefer pure cast iron.

Dont know what i was expecting as i own a tape measure but for some reason was suprised at how small it was. Common problem for men thinking things are bigger than they are. Will re order the 8 inch at some point. No stars off as iv got the 10″ of this already and there mustard.

Excellent little pan for frying a single egg which keeps its shape nicely to fit in a bread roll.
Also good for dry roasting spices for curries.
I sanded mine down with a fine grit paper to get rid of the rough casting finish you always get with cast iron, then re-seasoned a few times to make it nice and slippery.

Everything I’ve expected from the description and other user reviews was what I got.

Amazing quality iron cast skillet that I believe that will last generations. You can literally throw anything there that will be cooked into perfection (due to high heat).

The maintenance is not hard if we are careful cleaning it and seasoning it in each use.

    10/10 would buy again.

What’s not to love about a Lodge pan ? More expensive than most others out there but there’s a reason for that – it’s the best. As all cast iron cooking fans will tell you – seasoning is key and post use cleansing. If you follow the rules you will not be disappointed. This pan will last a lifetime and beyond

I am so pleased with my Lodge skillets (this size and a 12 inch). I can’t believe the money I have wasted over the years on thin bottomed flying pans, non-stick (for five minutes) frying pans and so on.

This little 8 inch was not so well pre-seasoned as the large 12 inch pan I bought but I got there in the end; easy enough to do in the top half of a very hot oven, just needed four or five rounds of heat up and cool down.

I very rarely use washing up liquid on mine unless I am going to give a coat of oil in the oven, I just use a brush or the reverse side of a typical washing up sponge.

Great pans, am thinking of buying one of those with a lid and a baking tray.

I would recommend stripping the factory seasoning (a self cleaning oven is the easiest nethod) as it’s rubbish.

Take the time to season it properly and you’ll be rewarded with a great piece of cookware.

This pan may be small, but it’s very useful, especially as it will go in the oven or under a grill. I’ve used it for browning nuts or spices, halloumi cheese, 2 eggs, meals for one. Retains heat well.

Love this! Sturdy and strong. Surface is quite rough though (they don’t really sell super smooth surfaced ones anymore). Comes a little preseasoned but was easy to give it a scrub off and reseason properly with flaxseed oil instead of the nasty chemicals. Cooks eggs amazingly now.

    Quality produc
Good service and a quality product, but please read the information. You need to treat cast iron differently to the usual aluminium. Wash in water and treat with vegetable oil after use. If not you will get rust and damage. This has been pre treated ( e.g covered in vegetable oil and baked for 1 hour ).
