Previously had a cheap model and i was never sure it was secure enough. This one is the business now he feels secure and in the need emergency services need to get in then they can.
Heavy duty – buy this one dont waste money on a cheap alternative.
Very solid. Easy to fit. Make sure you watch the video as this has some good tips. You will need a specific drill size and torx screwdriver. Order these if you don’t already have them as fitting is only easy when you drill the right size hole and have the right screwdriver!
Good strong key safe, code numbers clear to read. Room for more than one key.
Very robust, used by local authorities. Great for an external garage side door where you need to remove the key but keep it readily accessible. Bomb proof design.
I got locked out and didnt want it to happen again. We got this fitted in a discreet location on the outside of the house. It was easy to install and felt solid once up.
When you feel the weight and see the construction of this keysafe you realise that any thief would have to bring an arc-welder and steam roller to get the key from it
Small and compact … it is easily secured to masonary or wood and the code numbers are easily programmed in and easily unlocked if you know the code. It comes with masonary screws that are substantial although I secured it with 2 1/2″ wood screws in the end
Mount it near the door for access and positioned so noone would see you entering the code … the main thing is that a person wishing to gain entry in an emergency (ambulance) does not have to mess around trying to find the keysafe
Any thief with half a brain would just go round the back and knock a window in rather than mess with this indestructable safe
Need to have the right kit – to hammer drill right diameter into brickwork, and be able to interpret correctly the setup questions for the 4 number one letter open code – but once installed – it aint going nowhere!!!!
recommended
Looks, feels & is very strong. Had doubts about leaving the house keys out side but this item dispelled all those fears. People can try to get it off the wall, & open but I think they will soon give up.
More secure than other keysafes. You get what u pay for just don’t drop it or u may hurt ur foot or as I did break the plastic weather cove
This is a very handy thing to have outside your door. If you forget your key or, as I am 81, handy in emergencies. The fact that is was recommended by the Police was a very good reason to purchase it. The instructions to set the code seemed to be rather difficult to me, (but my neighbour sorted it out) and I think it has been a good move.
It’s a great product. Does exactly what it should do. I feel more secure now, as we live in the countryside, and it would be difficult to call out a locksmith, if we were locked out.
Delivered in under 24 hours
A very rugged device, simple to install on your own -too me no more than 20 minutes after watching the installation video on YouTube.
The hinge position is probably the part that sells this because nothing detached instead the face simply hinges down.
Locking is two simple actions.
Superb quality. Very robust. Very reassured by the LPCB certification. I have one for my door key and another in the house for a security cabinet key. Easy to install, program, and use.
Well made and secure, heavy weight unit which attaches securely to the brickwork with the supplied anchors. Combination is easy to set and offers a multitude of variations. Highly recommended.
Very good quality and a good price. Delivered the next day. I brought this one as it is recommended by the police.
very robust key safe which is easy to fit using fixings supplied. A screwdriver bit to fit the masonary screws would have been a welcome addition.
Good, but pricey. Paying for security here. It fits a few quite long keys and comes in very handy for letting people into the house.
Purchased for my father. Very robust. Easy to install even for those of us not gifted at DIY. Easy to set up code. It is expensive but compared with others and considering how solid and robust it is I didn’t have qualms about the price. It gave me peace of mind.
Installed this a few months ago, and it makes a total difference for your peace of mind leaving a key in this vs a smaller ‘flimsy’ one. Plus it being recommended by the police – always good. Instructions were easy to understand, installation was also easy but does require a drill and you need to get it mounted against brick (not a garden shed – wood isn’t a secure medium to mount on to) worked flawless and I now know we can’t lock ourselves out.
Excellent, sturdy item. A bit fiddly to set up, but I can’t see how it could be made any easier. Once set up and screwed to the wal, an earthquake *might* make it fall off. Would recommend 100%.
Received it and quickly set it no problems, using the right drill bit fitted to wall, no problem and would not come off the wall unless you knocked the wall down, can’t understand them that have had problems fitting it, or setting it! I would put it down to Just plain bad workmanship ! or setting it with a screwdriver, when the installation and setting manual tell you not to? Plus inside the unit it tells you not to, I recommend redoing the instructions when you get it first before playing with it.
Plus let’s face it, if there is a way someone will work it out so using common-sense is advisable using for other to enter when its needed makes scents however I would not levee keys in there for the house when away on Holiday or long times away from the property I put my Bok in plain sight so if any one tries to tamper with it would be clearly seen as I have a security light over it as well .
Plus I would never leave keys that let you enter straight into the property.
I think if you use your imagination you can work that one out.
For me it’s a great way of just making shore when I lock myself out I have a way of getting back in.
But take the key out when I lever the property for a long time or overnight, the best is to leave a key with family if going away . this I a great way of getting back in if you lock yourself out.
But using ones communicants nothing if full proof from, low life that wishes to steel from you.
And Now the Tory’s have cut the police to the point that burglary is not a subject the police can now take up as a priority in fact most are not looked into but just logged you’re on your own so look after yourself.
After I’d figured out the instructions (don’t just go by the pictures, read the text because the picture is misleading where setting the number is concerned), I was delighted with how sturdy this is and how well it operates. It seems a lot to pay but this is seriously heavy duty. I consider the price of the key safe very small compared to how much time it would take to get access if I locked myself out, what it would cost to repair a door or window, the cost of changing the locks, and not to mention that having the key lock means that those who need access can be given the code to help me in emergencies.
This is going to give me considerable peace of mind knowing that, if I should ever lose my keys when I’m out that I can get a spare set from inside the house (and bring my car back) while I try to figure out where the keys are. I wish houses had key safes this sturdy built in as standard.
A very secure key lock, unlike some of the other cheaper ones available. Very solid. Your wall will give way before this thing does.
Key code mechanism works well and is easy to set (reset).
With needing multi person access to my home this was the best and safest solutio
This is an especially sturdy key safe, good fittings for the wall that do not require plugs, positive buttons and plenty space inside. I have seen a few external key safes and this is the strongest by far.
Excellent product, well worth the additional cost over cheaper key safes.
Need some DIY experience to mount the unit, the holes need to be drilled very accurately.
I works well when combined with battery power pack. My model is Poweradd 10000 mha and can be charged from a computer and mains powered USB charger and car USB
Bought for my mother’s house – feels great quality and worth the extra – straightforward to fix – screwing straight into masonry without rawlplugs felt odd but it works! You’ll need the special star shaped wrenches as well.
This is the second time we have purchased this keysafe as others have been very poor quality by comparison. Neighbours and carers all highly rate this produc
Feels really solid and heavy. Love the rubber cover to disperse the rain. Real test is if anyone manages to break in, which no one has yet.
Used this to replace a second rate combination lock key safe. Very substantial construction and very easy to install. I would recommend this safe over all others.
Extremely impressed, this is my second attempt at this. The first time I went for the cheap options and was extremely unhappy with the product. This time I checked my options anf this product ticked all the boxes. The product is extremely robust and the mounting kit provides an extremely secure fittment. All round this is a well made sturdy product that I would recommend to anyone.
A neighbour had a fall and had to let the ambulance crew in to the house by shouting out his keysafe number, which prompted me to buy this for my elderly parents. It’s incredibly robust (get someone strong to fix it in place, using the right tools!) – police advice was to place in beside the front door, as it would be really obvious if anyone was trying to break into it (they’d need a sledge-hammer). Easily fixed, parents delighted, job done.
I run Airbnb and this was the solution for my guests to let themselves in and out of the house. I change the code for each guest so that if any return after their booking has ended they no longer have the number for the box. Perfect for the job intended.
This case is certainly strong and very heavy for it’s size. This gives confidence as soon as you unwrap the parcel. I have no fear of somebody stumbling upon the code to open the key safe. It takes me two or three goes to operate the code to get it to open. You do have to be confident that you really are using the correct code combination. It was a ‘doddle’ to set up, even using the flimsy plastic screw blade provided that I read other people complain of. Apparently other makes use the same principle. My fingers don’t do very well with touch screens either so I would’t wish to deter
anyone from purchasing this product. Since fitting it I notice several more of the same make on other properties in my neighbourhood.
This is a really solid lump. Initially we were worried about leaving keys in an exterior safe, after screwing this thing to the wall it became apparent that it is very secure. No more worries, its not the cheapest out there.
But…. Cheap things aren’t nice and nice things aren’t cheap!
One of the best key boxes I’ve seen. I am 79 I fitted the box in about 15 minutes. The way it is fitted you would have take house wall with the box unlike some boxes the is hinged cannot be removed. Also it’s very weather proof. I give it 10 out of 10
Great solid key safe which would take more effort than needed to get in. Even if they managed to prise it from the wall and take it away to bust open, by the time they returned you would have changed the locks.
Very solid, easy to Mount, simple to use, discreet and will hopefully mean that I don’t get locked outside in my dressing gown again when the front door blows unexpectedly shut when popping the rubbish in the wheelie bin! Only negative point the password can be entered in any order. For example if the password was 1234, it could be entered in any variation of these digits. Example 4231. It is therefore important to not have a passcode longer that 4 or 5 digits.
Product is easy to fit to brick wall and comes with clear instructions on installation and use. It claims security rating equivalent to that of a domestic front door. It is of very sturdy construction and attempts to forcibly open in situ would be more likely to break the bricks on which it is mounted. You’d probably find it easier or quieter to break the door down. Very heavy, make sure you don’t drop one on your foot while fitting it.
Ignore the reviews here that say this is really hard to mount. There are four screws. You need to drill four holes… It is not hard. You need to check you have the right equipment, but then that is no different from anything else. I am a woman. I am pretty handy, but no expert and I found this easy. Altogether it took me under half hour, and that is with me reading the instructions very carefully. Just check out the video on Youtube and it is easy peasy. (just type in “Supra C500 installation” – Amazon will not let me link to this video).
I think the safe seems really solid and well made and am confident that it does the job it is meant to do.
This is by far the best key safe on the market. Yes it’s nearly 70 but you try claiming on your house insurance if you buy a cheaper and not approved one and, somebody picks the lock and lets themselves into your property. You’ve got zero chance of claiming for any items stolen.
This was delivered as usual with Prime membership, which is so good. Seriously, from taking delivery of it, to it being up on my wall was around 20 minutes, and that includes getting my tools out.
Please note, order a Torx T30 bit to put in the approved bolts if you haven’t got one. They’re not expensive because if you install this key safe with any other screws you won’t be able to claim on your house insurance.
I can’t recommend this highly enough. Very well made, super secure, and simple to put up if you follow the instructions and have the correct tools.
Arrived on time, and seems very sturdy and well made.
Fitting was straight forward (just take care) but note the screwdriver requirement (although I fitted with a flat screwdriver that fitted perfectly).
4 star rating as it would be even better if buttons had to be sequential).
I had done my homework before the C500 arrived and so I was ready with a Torx T30 screwdriver bit in my power screwdriver and a 5mm and a 3mm masonry drill bits. First task was to select a 4 digit code which was simple enough using the tool provided, and then check it was working correctly.
I didn’t bother with the template and simply held it against the wall and used a felt tip pen to mark the hole positions. Using the 3mm drill I carefully made some pilot holes at slow speed to ensure the drill bit didn’t stray and then followed up with the 5mm drill to the required depth. I used an old rubber bulb air blower (camera lens cleaner) to blow all the dust out of the holes and then screwed it in place. The whole job took less than 20 minutes.
I had seen the Youtube videos of people breaking in to various key safes and I believe the earlier versions of the C500 was vulnerable. It seems the company have taken this on board and have made a good job of modifying the mechanism to make it hack-proof. I tried the techniques in the videos and could not get the unit to give away the combination at all, so I’m satisfied it is truly safe.
I only have one very minor criticism and that is that the internal hook to hang keys on could have been positioned a little higher up to better accommodate the longer chub mortice keys when on a key ring. Otherwise it is an excellent product.
The C500 KeySafe is strong and sturdy and easy to install although you do need to ensure you have the appropriate screwdriver head. I am not keen on the plastic ‘key’ needed to set the chosen security code or to change it. I haven’t been able to verify that it is recommended by the police although that doesn’t mean it isn’t. I would also have preferred the security code chosen, to be used in a specific order rather than opening the keysafe no matter what order entered. However, these are not major criticisms but feel they need to be pointed out. I have seen other key safes used by friends and family and this one certainly seems to be one of the best on the market.
his is not exactly a design icon, but it is a very robust weatherproof key safe. Just what I wanted
This is great and doesn’t look like the picture. It has like a black outer shell, which makes it really inconspicuous – it just looks like a little electrical panel on the side of the house or something. You would never know it was a key box. I had to get a handy man to come out and install it in the end which cost me all of about 20 and was worth it as then I knew it was fitted properly. There is no way anyone could get it off the wall!
It is very easy to use and we have a 8 digit code for it. I think you can use any code, long or short.
We use it so that our dog sitter can get in and collect our dog on days when we are at work. It is also great if you ever get locked out of the house!
Everyone who has used this key box has gone on to buy one for their own houses.
Excellent service. Rapid delivery. Solid product. After much deliberation from reading negative reviews about a video showing that this safe can be opened in less than 3 minutes. After seeing the video ,it seems unfair to say that cracking the safe on a table with pen and paper to hand and magicians hands….in the comfort of your own house is an acurate reality! Anyone can probably find a video on entering a house in less than a minute if your inclined that way.
Looks and feels very sturdy from the outside, and comes with a weather cover. It must weight well over a kilogram and I take this to be an indicator of quality. There is a hook for a key inside the box. The mechanism for setting /changing the code is plastic with lightly sprung tabs that are rotated with a supplied plastic tool. The mechanism seems fine to me and I had no problems setting codes. There should be no problem long term unless you’re ham fisted.
The key safe is attached to the wall with four masonry screws that go into 5 mm diameter holes. The screws require a T30 (Torx) bit that is not supplied. T30 heads are very common for masonry screw fittings. The screws went in firmly into Victorian engineering bricks with only hand power. Standard techniques should be adhered to for fixing the screws, in that the holes should be off sufficient depth and blown out with some compressed air from a can.
A correction now. The 12 keys labelled 0 through 9 and A and B provide a maximum of 924 alternative codes if you set 6 numbers for your code. This is not 4000 as stated in the description. The order of the keys pressed does not matter for this key safe. It is simple binomial maths for a non repeating combination (any six from 12). 12!/(6!*(12-6)!) = 924.
My version as of this review date has a friction fit on the black handle used to open the safe. This negates the common means of opening these safes as shown on several U Tube videos. I’ve seen several of these videos and tried that technique and can confirm that it no longer works. I’m not a professional bad guy, but have engineering experience and a good deal of theoretical knowledge and I am confident of the lock’s security.
The local council staff who have used it are perfectly comfortable with the design and operation of the key safe.
Fitted to Mum in laws bungalow. Does what it says, very impressed with the fixing and overall sense of substanial and strong. Does the job for us.
Third one we’ve got. Bolts that come with it easy to fit and use. But I end up painting the numbers black, as they come grey on grey.
My Wife has recently passed away and I am now living on my own. I now feel a bit nervous as, if anything goes wrong, being deaf there is no way I can ‘phone for help. I had always relied on my wife to call for me in an emergency. I intend to subscribe to ‘Careline’ or one of the many similar organisations but they all rely on the Emergency Services being able to get in the house if the door is locked.
Hence the need for a Key Safe and there is a very wide choice of these available indeed. However, only one of these is Police Approved and this is the Supra C500, available from Amazon.
A lot of Key Safes rely on digital technology and are fitted with a battery but the C500 is completely mechanical and does not require one. This safe is heavy and very solidly made. The instructions, although written in very good English, were a bit sketchy and the diagrams very small and difficult for an old codger like me to see. The fixing template was printed an the same sheet of paper as the instructions and this became very scruffy and torn after the template was used. It would be wise to make a copy of these instructions before proceeding to fit the safe.
There are twelve buttons with which to fix your code, numbered 0 to 9 plus A and B. This is a binary device rather that digital and for maximum security your code should have six digits; any more or less would make it easier to ‘crack’. Programing your code was very simple and should be carried out and tested before fixing to the wall.
This device has been in use for a few days and my grown up children have been having fun testing it instead of using their keys. I am very pleased with my purchase!
Very substantial and solid key safe. Easy to install, set up and use. Very pleased and won’t have to kick the door in again when I am locked out .
The C500 Keysafe is a very well made security device, when fitted as per instructions, any body trying to gain access would have to destroy the wall it was fitted to and then try to access the security box. Expensive but worth the extra cost…
We’re really pleased with this. For an elderly person who can’t always manage the walk to the door, and saves giving out lots of keys to different people. Now there’s only one key and no hassle. It was fitted on easily enough and is heavy, and sturdy. Setting the code is simple, and it gives us all peace of mind.
Great piece of ki
Although I don’t exactly ‘love’ this key-safe, it serves its purpose well. The only adverse criticism I have is that it took me – a bit of a dimmo – a while to figure out.
Gets a thumbs up from me!!! When I contacted the seller with a queery it was answered quickly and led me to purchase this key safe.
Seems very solid indeed. Had no trouble fitting it. I can totally see why it is secure. You have to turn the knob on the front to open. If the wrong combination is in you feel a little resistance as it tries to open and then it just releases and spins right round. If the combination is right it does exactly the same thing and then suddenly clicks are releases the bolt. In other words the ‘feel’ of the unlock mechanism and the code pins being correct or not have a deliberate degree of disconnection. You can’t sense when you are close to being right. I think this would be far harder to open than a Masterlock where the number wheel and the opening mechanism are close enough related enough for a skilled thief to pick. I won’t say how! But let’s just say I did my research. Worth the extra money where you need a higher level of protection and a lengthy organised attack is possible. e.g. Holiday home not occupied all year and not on a busy street.
Very solid construction and easy to fit. Being mechanical the key combination is rather like the old combination barrel bike locks in that any arrangement of the chosen letters and numbers works but that hardly matters as it would take a burglar far too long to go through each combination – roughly 500 – and opening it without the combination would be a major task, even if it had somehow been chiselled out of the wall, which would be a difficult enough task in itself if it had been fitted correctly.
It is a heavy duty piece of kit in both weight and strength and much more secure than keys under mats, plant pots, ornaments and rocks, real and otherwise, where any burglar worth his salt knows to look. Placed out of the way it provides a good back up those annoying times when you have forgotten your keys or in emergencies.
It is also useful as a key store for, for example, regular health visitors, home helps and so on. My mother-in-law had one which was used by district nurses and home helps when she was recovering from a broken hip.
Good solid construction I now have piece of mind knowing I will never be locked out of my home
Very heavy and solid. Haven’t had the opportunity to try it out but from what I have seen I feel sure it will do as promised. Arrived quickly and well packed.
This is a very heavy, sturdy item, but the installation instructions are for aliens! Anyway after much deliberation and discussion, my husband fitted it successfully and programmed the pass code. It arrived promptly and is as described.
Easy to fit with the correct tools. I find that the external cover is very hard to pull down to reveal the keypad. I doubt that a woman could pull it down without using a tool of some kind as I can only just do it myself and I am male and fit.
Stout, robust and works. You need a 5mm drill for the direct masonry screws, which are a requirement for maintenance of the police rating, and would have been good to know in advance!
It took a few goes before we got the hang of opening it, however once we did, it was fine. We are very pleased with this product.
Well the outer cover had to come off because I couldn’t open it. Otherwise it is OK. You need some sort of different tool to fit it as well. So all in all not quite as easy as it says but it does work now it is up.
A good solid and weighty object. As long as you have the right tools the fixing is straight forward, but do the job carefully and do not rush. The normal length number 5 masonry bit is rather short though, you need an extra few centimetres because the fixing screws are that much longer. This box must be fixed directly into the masonry.
This key safe is solid and impossible to break into no matter how much force is used. The code is a four digit combination from twelve possible input buttons. If you think you can fool it by pressing all twelve buttons forget it, it accepts just four inputs. If you are prone to forgetting or losing your keys, or need to allow access for certain people to your home and still feel safe this is ideal.
This is a substantial key safe and I particularly like the fact that the cover and key pad are hinged: a similar safe used at our bowling club has a key pad which comes away in your hand and, unless you remember to keep hold of it, the number has to be re-entered on replacing the key – a real nuisance. No such trouble with this product.
Some have commented on the flimsiness of the key for setting the combination, but as no pressure is needed, I found it more than sufficient for the required task. Other purchasers have commented that it is possible to work out what the combination may be but, in my experience, most burglars are opportunists and this would be too much trouble. In any case, even if someone did open it and get hold of the key to enter the house, they would only have a few seconds in which to locate the alarm box and work out the combination (different from the key safe) to switch that off. Our safe has been fixed where it is impossible to be seen from the road, but anyone spending time fiddling with it could be seen easily. Well worth the money.
My only criticism would be in relation to the instructions. The written text is fine but the illustrations are totally confusing with letters and numbers which have no explanation: A1, A4, A5, A6, A7 & A8, followed by B1 & B2, then C1, C2, C6 and D1, D2, D3, D4. Why not 1 to 15?
Very pleased with product and delivery. The safe is very heavy and of good construction – should provide good security, the operation of the mechanism is both positive and providing the knob is turned in a clockwise direction after entering the code, always works and opens as expected.
Very secure, happy to have this at my elderly relatives house. Very dated looking and feels like 1970’s tech which is why it’s not 5 stars
Does what it says on the box. Extremely useful and does away with the need for “spare” keys that you tend to lose track of.
Great keysafe – feel secure in knowing we can always get in the house when we are locked out by an Aunt with Alzheimer’s and also emergency services can access the house if needed
Bought this for my ageing Uncle so people could let themselves in to care for him and ambulance staff etc. it is nice and heavy and clearly not so easy to break into as many others on the market. The key code is a little disappointing in that for any code you pick, you can put the digits in in any order to open it !! Eg Code of 1234 can be entered as 4321 or any combination. This seems like a design decision to make the coding mechanism cheaper to build. It also means you can’t effectively use the same digit twice. Eg. 12341 is the same as 1234 or 4231 etc. My biggest concern is that you are asked to use the supplied self-threading bolts direct into brickwork. This requires good quality brickwork that isn’t a bit crumbly and making the pilot holes exactly the right size. When you screw the bolts into the hole, it makes it own thread which seems tight but if you take the bolt out again eg because you DO need to drill the pilot hole much deeper than the bolt length to take up the waste as you screw the bolt in, the fit is not nearly as tight when you reinsert the bolt. The guarantee is not valid if you do the sensible thing and use a proper raw plug which would be far more secure. So with a club hammer this would come off the wall quite easily, but so then would every Keysafe on the market. And yes you need to install it on a perfectly flat surface, so if your wall is pebble-dashed you have to carefully chisel it away to provide a flat surface. This is quite hard especially as pebble dash is full of large round stones !!
I had two installations.
One thing I did from the beginning was use the paper hole template to mark out the hole positions on a thick piece of plywood. This was then accurately drilled for a guide template. The reason for this I find, is when drilling masonry holes in brickwork, the drill tip can deviate slightly from the pencil mark when starting off.
After drilling my first hole I then secured the wooden template to the wall with one of the screws. This then allowed the other three holes to be accurately drill-marked ready for full penetration, after removing the wooden template.
The house bricks of the second installation were very much harder to drill. Am glad I bought a Torx screw-driver as backup and not relied on the Torx tip for my electric drill to thread the security screws into the bricks. It was very hard going. Thankfully the handle shape of the Torx driver was square and allowed me to rotate the driver with a spanner when too difficult by hand.
This key safe is exactly as described and delivered in less than 24 hours. It was installed in less than one hour using just a masonry drill bit and screwdriver. Couldn’t be simpler.
This item was delivered promptly. It is well made and very weighty. It needs (strength to hold it! and) accurate fixing but is sturdy and the security of your keys is well worth the time and expense.
Well made, solid and easy for the user to change the code. Easy to mount. Tipjust touch over the numbers with a black marker pen as they don’t show up too well and need a bit more definition.
This type of ketsafe was approved as safe and secure to keep keys for emergency use. It is solid, easy to use, weatherproof – everything you would be looking for, it ticks every box.
The inside hook is too low down. This is not good because it is difficult to hang a bunch of keys or a long key
Clear and easy fitting instructions.
One word of warning when you enter the code there is no entry sequence recorded so for example if you use 4213 anyone pressing 1234 would be able to open the safe, please make sure you don’t use sequential numbers.
This is a really heavy and extremely solid chunk of metal. It looks very well made and finished, including all the insides when you open it up. It’s easy to set a code of your choice, from 12 possible (ten numbers , ‘A’ and ‘B’). It doesn’t matter which order you press the digits of your code when opening. Can thoroughly recommend this key safe, the only niggle I found is that the black plastic weather cover fits SO tightly that until you’ve fixed the safe to a wall, it’s rather difficult to prise open if you’ve taken the clear plastic tag off! A minor niggle though.
Had to buy this for Mum, as her other one broken by carer, and was of the type that the key pad had to be cleared. This is better as you,can not close this without the buttons clearing automatically. Worth the extra money
Update. 2017 try as hard as they can, carers havenet manged to break it yet! Jammed it a few times…. don’t ask! But managed to free its up and restore it to working order. Worth the extra.
An excellent piece of kit which is easy to set up. In addition it came with torx headed screws for screwing int brickwork. I also bedded it on to Evostick Gripfill to protect the back from moisture. It is rugged, easy to operate and the carers, who look after my mum and need access to her key, prefer this type of key safe.
Well designed, tough. Easy to fix on a wall. Easy to set up. The cardboard key mentioned by previous reviewers as inadequate and likely to disintegrate has now been replaced by a tough plastic key.
What is particularly good about this key safe in addition to the above, is that so many carers and District Nurses are familiar with it, whereas with so many key safes on the market with their different operating methods, it meant that Social Services and Hospice staff as well as other carers, did not need to be shown how to open and close it. So we could leave it to them and not have to travel to our mother’s house just to show each new carer/nurse how to use it and then do it all again with the next new visitor. They were all familiar with it.
It is very heavy and well built. Just make sure it is attached into brick or concrete. I recommend that no screw is fixed in the mortar between bricks.
I’ve had a few problems with this but it’s proved invaluable. Initially I had problems where it randomly wouldn’t lock but it seems to have settled down now. Perhaps I hadn’t set the numbers properly. It’s quite fiddly. Don’t place it too high on the wall as it’s very difficult if you have to reset the code when it’s in place, as I did due to a security breach via the care agency – 7pm on a rainy Sunday night in December. Lovely!
One of the hinge lugs on the black weather cover broke after two months but was still usable. Now, after four months, the handle on the top of the weather cover has broken off making it virtually impossible to open. The Safe Shop has arranged for a new cover to be sent out from the manufacturer so I’m guessing it’s a known issue. Ours has heavy use (at least 3 times a day to provide access for carers).
The customer service from The Safe Shop has been superb and I wouldn’t hesitate to order from them again.
UPDATE: Been used for 7 months now and no further problems. Love it!
I’ve bought a few of these now which have all gone rusty and jammed up quite quickly. This one however has been installed since early 2013 in a holiday let and is still great.
It was really easy to install and set the code. It is very well made. I would recommend this safe to anyone. It is also easy to use and clear to see when you are putting in the code.
There seem to be just two contenders on the market: this, or the much cheaper MasterLock. The latter can be picked with 10 mins’ research on the internet, a feeler gauge, and five minutes’ effort. Mine also had a habit of resetting itself to a random combination – so I suppose it was handy that it could be picked. Anyhow, the obvious security implications led me to upgrade to this, which is Police Approved. I have to say that I’m very, very impressed; everything about it smells of security. It’s very heavy duty, and it comes supplied with security masonry screws that bite straight into the brick – no PlasPlugs (since they can be levered off the wall with a crowbar). Operation is simple; the buttons are much clearer than the small numbers on the MasterLock combination. The lock is simple and solid and easy to operate, and it can’t be forced – if the combination is wrong, it simply turns around without opening the lock.
Some reviewers have expressed reservations that you can put the numbers in in any order, which reduces the number of combinations. True; but there are twelve buttons (labelled 0-9 and A,B), and you can decide for each one whether you want it pressed or not in your combination – you aren’t restricted to four digits. That means that, whereas a four-digit combination lock has 10,000 possibilities, this one has 4095; not quite as many, but still an awful lot for a potential burglar to work through. (Yes, the mathematically inclined may point out that there should be 4096 combinations; but one of those is to have no buttons pressed, which isn’t at all secure since it would open as soon as the “clear” button is pressed.)
You can buy this key safe at various prices from about 50 to 120. At 50, it’s well worth it – very cheap insurance, and far more secure than the MasterLock.
One very minor niggle: it needs a torx-head driver for the screws. I bought a whole set of these at Aldi for 4, so it wasn’t a big deal; they are occasionally useful for other things. I don’t know why they couldn’t have used an Allen head though, or else included a spanner as Ikea does.
Overall – brilliant. I don’t normally bother to leave reviews, but this device deserves it.
Very sturdy, with good-sized push-buttons and a weather-resistant cover. Far and away stronger than most key safes – which is why it is police-approved.
Not the easiest to fit, but OK if you take your time. In the dark, though, you will need some form of illumination to see the number buttons (so carry a small torch in your bag/car, or use your mobile phone torch).
I bought this KeySafe because it is the only one which I am aware which is recommended by the Police. You can get alternatives at a fraction of the price but to my mind the premium is well worth paying for this endorsement.
It a robust beast and would not, I imagine, be at all easy to break into. A key is provided to change the combination – as another reviewer said, this is quite flimsy but I had no problem in using it and did not have to resort to a screwdriver. One interesting aspect is that you can put the numbers in the combination in in any order and it still works. This initially concerned me. However, when I worked out that there are 12 possible numbers to use rather the usual nine or ten, the chances of randomly getting your selection are astronomical. It is certainly not a keysafe where you are going to get the combination by trying a number and jiggling it around to see if it is a bit loose as you can with cheaper variations. It is far too well built for that.
Installation is simple via 4 large screws which attach the back to the wall. Overall I am very pleased with this item and glad that I paid the extra to get the best keysafe around.
Solid and heavy as hell. Simple to install – you just need a 5mm masonry drill bit and a little care.
Button numbers are cast in place and not particularly wasy to see, especially with limited porch lighting at night. Carful highlighting with a permanent marker is an excellent idea.
You can’t set codes with any number repeated, which brings the number of possible combinations right down – yest this is “police approved”
Recommended.
When shut, the front feels a bit loose, making it advisable to push it tight closed when selecting code buttons, so as to improve the feel of the buttons engaging. Not a major problem, but I’ve deducted a star.
The Torx screws worked well in fixing it to the wall – they are a good idea, in that they make it that bit more difficult for unauthorised removal if the safe is inadvertently left open, however unlikely that may be.
Setting the code isn’t a problem, even if the “key” seems flimsy.
The plastic outside cover works well and clicks reassuringly shut.
For me, a major advantage is that turning the handle to lock the safe automatically does so, without having to re-input the code.
I’m pleased that I bought it.
This is definitely the best key safe: it is easy to use even in low light conditions, weatherproof, will accommodate several door keys of all standard types on an internal hook (crucial so keys don’t fall out on opening/closing key safe). The door is hinged so it’s not fiddly to open or close, and the door/keypad can’t be lost. It is extremely sturdy without being an eyesore – it can be placed in plain view of the relevant door, no one is going to remove this or break it open without industrial tools! It comes highly recommended by professionals who use key safes for the elderly and infirm, although in our case the prime users are errant offspring who forget keys….
The code is easily set using the plastic tool set unobtrusively inside; most people use 4 digits but it can be more or less. The order of digits doesn’t matter, but there are still far too many possible combinations for this to be a security issue. Never ever use a screwdriver to set the code or lose a record of the code, or it will be a permanent and unusable wall ornament!
Fitting is for a practiced DIYer or a professional. Invest in a high quality 5mm masonry drill bit of sufficient length to accommodate the masonry screws (go directly into brick, does NOT use wall-plugs) Holes have to be drilled precisely (photocopy the template unhelpfully printed on the rear of the instructions), drill pilot holes with a small bit first & make sure the template is the right way up! Even with a good heavy drill with hammer action the whole process takes a couple of hours in order to read and fully understand the instructions, assemble all the kit, ensure correct placement, fit the key safe, set the code and instruct the users. Although the unit is compact it is heavy so a helper is required. It may well break out of standard amazon packaging because it is heavy, but the box is secure and everything is packed neatly within the uncoded and unlocked key safe on arrival.
I bought this safe as it was Police Approved, and seemed to be of sturdy construct with button code operation that I prefer to the rolling dial type. Although it is sturdy enough the locking mechanism does not pull the lid in tight on the base and it rattles around some when the code is punched in, just a bit annoying. The most wanting aspect of this device to me is the numbers being grey on grey which makes reading them difficult in fading light, for the high price of this device I would expect a little black or white paint on the numbers and letters to improve clarity. Something I will be doing myself before the darker evenings and mornings are upon us.
Very solid product that’s been on the wall outside for six months now and still looks good as new. The programming mechanism is a little awkward and I’m not sure how robust the keys would be with regular use but for my application, keeping an extra set of keys outside the house for emergency lockouts, it works great.
The item is as described and arrived promptly.
It is a sturdy construction. Certainly very difficult for anyone to break into it.
The instructions were clear, but, the mechanism for locking and unlocking needed time for familiarisation. I made sure that I knew how it licked and unlocked before putting in the key. However, now it is fitted, it works and I’m content.
A couple of points. I used a jewellers screw driver to set the combination. The plastic card provided was useless. The screws provided for attaching to the wall were replaced with some that were more appropriate for my purpose. The box is made in China. The price – 71-00 plus postage, seemed on the high side considering the quality of the whole product, but still a 5- star purchase. But do spend time to check that you know how it works before using it.
I bought this keysafe to prevent the possibility of being locked out, and to enable my family to get access in emergencies.
The safe is large enough to hold a complete set of keys and seems to lock securely and easily. It is nicely robust and appears to be strong enough to withstand interference.
The lock is push-button but the chosen combination can be entered in any order which I guess is less secure than it could be.
Fitting was straight-forward enough and took around 20 minutes including drilling the screwholes into the wall. One minor annoyance was that the screws provided are the security type and therefore require a non-standard screwdriver which is not supplied and which most people (including me), will probably not have. I had to buy one separately to finish the job. Since the screw heads are inside the safe when it is installed I’m not sure why this is entirely necessary.
I’m reasonably pleased with the product which gives me a sense of security. I have knocked one star off the rating purely because of the non-standard screws which I was not aware of when ordering.
I looked at the information for this keysafe early in my search aand dismissed it because of price. I wandered around this site and a couple of others and ended up buying this one anyway – quite simply nothing else measured up to my requirements. I am happy with my keysafe and consider it well worth the asking price.
Instructions were very clear and came with a template for the wall mount. It is sturdy to the point of being pry-proof and heavy enough that you could break a toe if you dropped it. The locking mechanism is good quality and operates from a comfortable 180 degree turn. Even kids under 10 could easily use this once combination is set. It fits to even a slightly uneven brick wall easily and securely and has a well designed rain cover over the button section. The buttons have a solid enough feel which gives you confidence that they will last. I am very happy with my purchase, but there are a couple of points to note…
# The combination will open the locking mechanism even if the numbers are entered out of sequence.
# The rain cover was extremely tight and grated my skin a few times against the wall as I tried to pull at it.
# The supplied screws are torx ( recess looks a little like and asterix ) Not everyone will have the tool to use these.
# A tool is required to change the combinition – it is like a piece of cardboard – one is supplied. I nearly lost mine on the first day even though there is a recess to hold it within the keysafe. Lose this and forget your combination and you will really be in trouble. Take care.
This keysafe is very robust and simple to fix. The flap down construction is great as, once it is opened, the push button front will not get lost.
The only reasons for not giving 5 stars is that the push buttons are small and a little wobbly – all the buttons move a little when one is pushed.
The item is a must, especially for elderly relatives and friends, who live alone.
Also, it is essential for those of us who mislay keys…at least you can get back into your house without fuss. Saves embarrassment and getting a locksmith out.
I have recommended this to a number of my friends.
