This is a solid pet door better than the plastic versions which my dog used to break quite regularly. It also has a good seal on the flap which keeps the cold out. I would definitely recommend this pet door over the plastic version for excitable dogs!
delighted with this door,….a replacement for the other type of door (plastic)..which broke within a month,..repaired and strengthened,..but still broke ,,poor construction and too weak at stress points, was very, very disappointed with it…..this one has been perfect, should have bought this one in the first place
Good product, easy to fit & much more robust than the usual catflaps with the rigid plastic door.
The sliding lockable door is a much better idea, the old style when locked are very flimsy & the cat demolishes it every time.
good size door, doesn’t make the noise like the plstic doors do which is a positive. i slight down side was the plastic screws as they shattered over night, since then i used metal screws
Took me about half an hour to install. Magnetic catch is a great idea. Dog uses it all the time and took very little training to get her to use it. Highly recommend it.
This is a good solid product which the two dogs took to with no problem the magnetic strip doesn’t always close the flap and seal the opening which will be a bit cold in winter time will tell if it robust enough my old plastic one took a hammering and lasted two years .
Bought a medium one for a border Colley and a Westie survived long than the and plastic ones that stay quiet frequently. Only thing is the plastic screws keep snapping. I used the old bolts and metal Screws from the hard plastic one I replaced. So don’t over tighten them.
My dog loves it. We purchased this one to replace and old one that had the hard flap – my dog hated using it as she did not like the feeling on her face, she is much more comfortable with this one as it is a softer touch. Some people comment that a breeze blows it open – well duh. The flap is only held in place by magnets an they cannot be too strong or your dog would not be able to push it open. If you install any dog door, you will get a draft around it as it is not air tight. If you want an airtight door, then be prepared to stand there and open your UPVC door each time your dog wants to go in or out.
HIghly recommend ! weve had plastic ones before with hard flap that our 2 hyper active cocker spaniels have broke – this one is amazing. fits nicely in the door and looks good and the soft plastic still closes well with the magnetic clasp – safe for 2 mental dogs flying through at high speed! Also the slide in locking flap is very good – the dogs can see its closed so dont try to barg through!!! and is also much more secure from a security aspect. Good buy!
excellent buy only one star short because of the plastic screws it came supplied with why supply these screws they are rubbish
This is a great dog flap, it’s silent, there are no drafts and it is not bulky, I have a Jack Russell and a cat that both use with no issues.
Very good quality. My dog is a fairly small terrier though and am ordering a replacement medium one as this one is too small for her to go through comfortably.
Had the old version of this my dog smashed the door within a month this one is brilliant it’s surviving the speed he hits it and it’s almost silent when it shuts so the cat can sneak in without the dog noticing the hole this needs is bigger however than the older versio
Was very impressed by the quality of the finish, well madeand strong. I had 3 plastic ones before and the rigid plastic flaps got broke with my German shepherd sticking his head through and lifting it up. This one has a flexible flap thant cant break so ,problem solved.
We use our petdoor for our Parsons Jack Russell. He s managed to go through a door every 6 months but this one might finally be the one. The flap is strong but silent and because its flexible seems to absorb the force he crashes through it with. Sometimes the magnetic strip doesn t close securely but not a big issue. So far very happy and you can get spare parts.
Brilliant dog flap. Is so much softer on the dog it’s not a hard plastic that they are running into to get out it’s a nice flexible flap and easy to fit. Probably really good if you have a pet that doesn’t like using a a dog flap , it’s so much less offensive and not as noisy either.
great door after 3 of the plastic doors each of which broke the same way this one looks like it will last forever also much quieter when my working cocker dashes in and ou
I was right when I chose it among the other offers. When I received it I realized it was beyond my expectation. My dog is happy, he goes back and forth continuously!
Great dog door, perfect size for the mixed breed pup with space to spare. She’s a confident little girl and was happily bounding through it within hours.
Now the less good bit, the manufacturers, in an attempt to make the door suitable for fitting into various thicknesses of doors etc, provide thin plastic fixings that you trim off any excess. Good idea in principle but they really need to be sturdier. The head of one snapped during installation despite being very careful not to over tighten. The door is currently attached with the remaining 3 fixings & t he friend who fitted the door is going to get some long 1/4″ bolts and swap them to make it more secure.
Overall happy with the product but fixings do need beefing up a bit.
Very pleased with this product. Far better than any other door flap I have used for cat and dogs. The others seemed flimsy and never lasted very long. Jack Russell’s are continually in and out and the cat did not like the others very much.
Installed it today to replace the rigid medium plastic petsafe flap on a upvc door with a plain panel. That flap lasted about 2 years of abuse andcwas cracked badly on the hard plastic flap. It’s taller than the plastic one which works fine for me though slightly narrower. Being a flexible plastic, much like the rubber strips you see in cold storage areas, the door is pretty much unbreakable but there is a handy replacement part number on the door should the unthinkable happen.
My only criticism is the screws its held together with. I realise they must be multilength but the plastic screws into an aluminium nutsert are very poor. I re tapped them to m4 and used machine screws. If you are able to to do this or deal with the plastic screws (not recommended!) Then I would say I can’t fault this flap. 5 stars but for the screws
Have brought this dog flap at our previous house and was impressed with quality, have two jack Russell’s and running in and out all day very strong excellent! Easy to fit so no problems.
This is a well made product unlike the one I replaced which never worked properly. One thing which I do not believe the instructions make clear is that the frame requires a panel thickness of not less than 25mm. My panel was 13mm so I added another panel in 12mm plywood inside with a thin layer of foil faced bubble insulation between the two to help reduce heat loss. The inner cover slides in channels in the frame and is a loose item. I found by fitting a small thin timber batten with a centre notch above the frame inside it is perfect to hold the panel up when the flap is open. Its simple now to drop the flap down when needed. Surprised the makers did not provide something to do this as its a bit of a no brainer really. I do recommend this item.
Really happy to finally have a pet flap for the dog and cat. They learned to use it quickly. It’s very quiet (as opposed to hard plastic doors that bang open and shut). On very windy days it does allow in some cold air but so far it’s not the end of the world.
Good but wind blows door open, shame as this seem a common problem that has been highlighted for a long while and you would have thought petsafe/staywell would have acted.
Apparently good quality metal construction with strong flexible plastic flat. The dog had broken several of the plastic dog flaps previously but this one appears to be strong enough to stand up to him!
Purchased this to replace a standard medium sized pet door, of which our dog had managed to destroy three over a four year period, and purely through his exuberant exits to the garden, causing the outside frame to fracture and eventually break. This one, by comparison, has a flexible door that only opens to the size of the dogs body. Its also a lot quieter in operation. No more “clack, clack”, more a “tsk, tsk”. All in all a far better solution, and with replaceable flaps being available, I can see this being used for a considerable number of years. Two points that prospective purchasers should note, however. The door frames are held in place by nylon bolts that will break at the least sign of being overtightened, so be very careful and probably better to use a manual tool, rather than an electric to tighten these. Also, and the supplied instructions don’t really highlight this, when fitting the door, you need to allow double the door height as a flat space to allow the security door to be fitted and removed easily. If fitting in the recessed bottom panel of a uPVC door as I did, with the flap mounted near the bottom, there is only just enough room to fit the security door without it being baulked by the door centre frame.
Brilliant! We bought a new flat panel for the door rather than chop up the decorated panel. Was easy to fit and it works really well. Has blown in a few times whilst it has been windy but I just put the cover on and the kittens have to let me know if they need to go out.
Have always had the plastic version of this before, but bought this to go into our new UPVC back door. It is taller than the normal medium plastic Staywell door but looks better and seems more durable. Prefer the rubber flap
Perfect for a medium sized dog – such as our 20 month old beagle.
Neighbour paid somebody 150 pounds to install a cat flap less than half the size of this product.
Thought I’d give it a go myself after watching a few videos online – after 30 minutes flap added to our UPVC kitchen door and 100 or so pound saved…!
The pack comes with good instructions and a template that you stick to your door to help you drill the holes on the corners. Then a simple case of jigsawing the rectangle area out.
Tip: add a bead of waterproof silicon to the frame (inside and outside) before you place it on the door. The flap itself isn’t the strongest but much better than the (noisy) plastic variety.
Like an earlier reviewer mentioned we placed a small step on the outside as the kitchen floor was higher on the inside and this helps the mutt get inside and out.
Took to it like a duck to water – without any issues…
The best small dog flap I have ever brought so easy to fit and very good quality.. I have 4 small dogs (JRT.westie) & 3 cats they all use it easily.. Very happy
This is the first one of the Aluminium ones we have purchased after our two JR Puppies destroyed 3 other plastic one!!!! So far delighted and can’t believe how quiet it is – took a bit of fixing to accommodate the closing flap – our fault but otherwise we are delighted
We used this flap on our garage metal door for our cat . Worked a treat so we could then put another flap on garage internal door! It meant we didn’t have to put one on the main front door and let the draft in!! Highly recommend
Delivery was quick. Had product installed for a while now and working just as well as I had hoped. Cat uses it as its soft rubber but stays shut with winds and constant animal entries.
Was easy to fit and very quiet when animals come in and out. Very pleased as it was reduced as well.
Best dog flap we have used. Very quiet going in and out regardless of how hard my dogs crash through it! The metallic strip has kept it closed even in very high winds. Great value for money!
This was relatively easy to fit, good clear instructions make it easily within the capabilities of a most people with a bit of DIY experience. I have two standard wire haired dachshunds and they took to it straight away. The flap makes very little noise but if the wind is blowing directly at the door it sometimes doesn’t positively seal. I fitted it to a panel of a UPVC door and found that the security flap would not slide into place as the lateral piece of doorframe above obstructed it. I managed to get round this buy cutting a spacer from a piece of 18mm thick plywood sheet which I inserted between the inside frame of the flap and the door panel, pushing it out, which then allowed the security flap to be slid in place. It is for this reason I only gave the product 4 stars. It is a shame that the company doesn’t offer a pre-made spacer as an accessory item.
Wonderful product installation instructions make it easy to fit ment it only took an hour & half, my pet dog didn’t even hesitate to use it & enjoys looking out of it surveying the garden. I no longer have to get stressed worrying about the dog getting hot & stressed inside while Im at work.
It’s certainly quieter than hard plastic flaps that clatter away every time they are used. The fitting instructions are not very clear and it took me a while to realise I had to snap off the white metal tunnel to fit it to a kitchen door with a plywood insert. I think it assumes you’ll have a solid wood door. However the white metal tunnel does seem to be etched to aid it’s removal by bending it back and forth with pliers.
Having fitted it, I then realised the locking panel that slides in the top was a bit tricky to set in its runners as it fouled the frame around the lower panel. I can get it in but it would have helped to set the door an inch lower – had I set it an inch higher I doubt I’d have got the locking panel in at all.
Fantastic door. Very straightforward to fit and look great when in place.
I would highly recommend and the security door is a great addition. Much better than the hard plastic flaps. Especially when you have 2 puppies flying through chasing each other.
Having got through numerous plastic type cat flaps, which our Labrador destroyed in an effort to follow the cat; we invested in this one. It fits perfectly, looks neat and the dog has admitted defeat. Some have commented the flap does not shut tightly, have not noticed this but the cat flap is in the conservatory door.
This was my 3rd flap, the first was just for the cat so when we got the dog I had to get a bigger one, chose a cheap plastic flap, my main issue was the weight of the actual flap, the cat struggled getting out, the other issue was how close the fixings were to the actual hole, in my UPVC door this caused the edges to blow, so was not very secure. this one however is a light weight flap, no problems with either pets, and it does not make a racket when the dog charges through, the flap comes with a threshold so it looks much neater, so far no issues with gusts of wind blowing it open, and we have had a few windy days. overall I`m super pleased with it.
well made and easy to fit dog flap, the flexible door is so much better that the rigid plastic dog flaps as these frighten some dogs .. the colour of the slide in door to secure and lock it from the inside is a lovely beige colour and is so easy to slide in and out you just press a button and slide it out ,, this is a better quality dog flap unlike the plastic ones on the market that easily get scratched and dirty ,, this aluminium frame wont scratch or discolour and is easily cleaned very pleased
Had the standard hard medium petsafe flap before and although I had to replace it every year due to breaking in all kinds of places, but I’d been happy with it. But I thought this time Id try this soft flap. So glad I did, no noise when in use, flush with the door frame, no wind blowing around it. Had to cut door hole just extra at the top about 1.5″. Excellent, so much better, 50x improvement!
Quiet. Stays closed in all but the worst winds. Has an insert for when we need it fully closed. Dog learned to use it very quickly (but “forgets” when it’s raining out.) Has held up over a year of our mad staffie crashing through it at speed.
Very good, dog loves it !, took her all of 30 seconds to figure it out! Does a decent job of keeping the draughts out, house a lot warmer now with the door closed.
Excellant! My cavalier bounds through at top speeds and all the other dog flaps broke but have had this almost a year and its still as good as new. The rubber flap is really nice and my dog prefers it to the plastic flap. So quiet when she bounds through I barley notice she has gone outside! Easy to fit too and looks good! The best lock door on it as well.
I have a king charles spaniel and a cat, this is perfect, it did take quite a bit of encouragement with treats but i no longer have to get up at 3 in the morning to let the cat out. I have had this a few months now and it stays really clean compared to the magnetic plastic ones
Brilliant product! My 100 mile a hour spaniel broke 2 flaps on the rigid plastic flaps but this flexible plastic flap is great. Has a good magnetic catch and always sits in place. Would never go back to the rigid type now
Hi
After long reserch I did buy above product.
Its more expensiv then other plastic doors but in longer run should be less problematic as some reviews sayed the plastic doors broke down after a year. I instal mine in the wall as I got 2 pair of doors going outside and was faster solution then buying 2 for each door.
I was unable to use tample as was next to the corener but insted I use frame to mark where opening should be then cut out in brick whith sds hamer, instalation was easy for diy person like myslef.
Product looks and feel very gd.
Works nicely and most of times close with no problems, only when dogie go very slow thru frame the magnes dont catch as should.
My pupies learn very fast how to use it as I done litte diffrent way then is on insturction,
I left my pupies outside then show them new pet door and then leave them outside take them only few minuts to find a way to back to me XD very happy and when 1 used other one just copied XD.
funny part is 1 use nose to open and then go thru and other use paw XD so adorable litte pupies.
Very pleased with this new dog flap.
We had the plastic version of it prior to that and it had to be replaced twice in 2 years. This one is much sturdier, and QUIETER!!! (You can’t even hear the dogs run out anymore !) , definitely worth the difference in price.
I am sure this will last longer than the other sturdy flaps and it looks nice.
I can’t compare with the others as this has been fixed to a different door that is facing a direction of where the rain falls where all other ones was more sheltered. this one did let in the rain, but my husband has fitted a canopy above it!! And now no rain in the room.
This is not fitted to house but to a shed that the dog sleeps in.
NB i do live in a very windy area and this could be the reason rain did come in as it blew the flexible flap open.
If you have any intention of installing a dog flap. this is the one for you! I had a hard plastic one and the noise of the dogs flying in and out of it could be heard up the street. This one is nearly silent. It keeps out draughts really well and Is easy to install into a upvc door. Now, my dogs go belting in and out chasing each other, so I will let you know about wear and tear in 6 months. Also, if the flap did get damaged, the order number for a new flap, not the whole frame, is written on the side of the flap. There is no downside to this product and I’ve tried others.
I bought this product as I wanted a cat flap which could be robust and resistant to my 2 puppy dogs which busted the traditional plastic cat flaps. They would force there heads through breaking off the plastic window and sometimes wearing the frame around there necks. Comical to look at but another job to fix and therefore the choice to try this product.
It works – its looks much neater than the bulky plastic type and is easy to fit. I did read other buyers comments that it perhaps flaps around in high winds and can let rain in. I have not experienced this defect however it has not been through a horrendous Bromsgrove winter. The contact between the magnet from edge of flap to the metal frame seems good enough though.
I’m very happy with this door. It seems strong and well made. My only comment is that the instructions failed to state that if your door is thinner than the standard size, you need to break off a section of the aluminum on either side. This caused a little confusion until we worked out what to do and how to do it. Otherwise no complaints and my three dogs got the hang of it in a couple of hours.
I bought this pet door to replace another one that failed to do its job. This one is much better, the flap doesn’t get stuck in weird positions and 2 of my 3 cats learned to use it in a matter of days.
The magnetic closing system, combined with the flexible material used for the door, are a really smart choice: you aren’t afraid the door will stuck and your pets will spend the day outside.
The plastic screws are a bit weird and when I opened the package they failed to convince me, but they did their job.
I brought this for an internal pvc door that we keep closed in winter as it leads to the utility room that isn’t insulated too well and gets cold but this is where we keep the litter try, cat and dog food and water.
I found that it was very easy to fit using a drill and this keyhole saw.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-83135-Compass-Saw-Blades/dp/B0001KA21G/ref=sr_1_6?s=diy&ie=UTF8&qid=1404040311&sr=1-6&keywords=keyhole+saw
Both the cat and dog got used to using it within a few hours with a bit of encouragement even tho they have never used a pet flap before.
It is quiet compared to plastic flaps I have had before and is easy to keep clean.
We are very happy with this pet flap and would definitely recommend it.
Mark.
Paid less for this than the cheap plastic ones in the shops. Easy to fit (put in glass French doors but bonded instead of screwed). Very quiet and absolutely perfect. Dog learned in 20 mins and it never wakes us up or blows in wind etc.
This is our second one, loved the first one, wish I could have taken the door and flap with me when we moved but for unknown reason the new owners of our old house, wanted to keep the door! Would I recommend this product, absolute resounding yes.
well I had purchased 3 plastic ones before and every one broke. was noisy and draughty and not strong enough. they in fact cost me a fortune. I have noted other peoples remarks about the same thing.
so fortunately for the supplier we went up market to get a sturdy flap at a higher price.
must say a lot better by far, quieter, stronger and far less draught.
Pleased with at the mome
I was hoping for a door that was tuned to pet microchip but unfortunately my dog is too large. This product was easy to install and the sliding protective case is easy to slip in and out. Dog is very happy running in and out of the house. So glad I tried it:)
Ordered late evening, received next day (although not paid for next day)
Fitted in 30 mins , my 2 jack russell dogs ages 7 and 4 went through it in 5 mins after I lifted the flap for them initially .
Within 15 mins flap down in and out no problems . Fitted easily , needed to pack it out a bit as my door had a recess and the door was a bit thin. Plastic screws were absolutely fine no problems there.
I’m glad I didn’t go for the smaller version as I feel this medium size is perfect for jack russell size.
Super quality so glad I went for the aluminum style.
I bought this for my cat who is quite big.
I liked this over standard ‘cat flaps’ as there were no fiddly slides or dials to change whether it was open or not. The magnet seems strong enough and the flap does not blow open in the wind. Although it is not very drafty I still love being able to close this with the slide door to stop drafts and also it is clear to the cat when it is not open he doesn’t have to head butt it to realise it is closed.
If you are happy with only an open or closed option and want a sturdier surface when ‘closed’ this is a good product. I feel more secure being able to slide a solid door closed.
This was just what I wanted and fitted with what I was comfortable with.
This door is quite narrow but a good height, rather a different shape from many dog doors. Our Labrador cross dog can get through quite easily, but a stout old Labrador might find it a bit slim. We think small children could get through but not adults, a bonus from a security point of view. The security door fits well and is positively locked in place. The door flap is heavy flexible plastic and it seems to lie flat even in a big wind. Only minus is that the frame is deeper than most panel doors are thick, so it needed setting out on spacers to make a neat finish. We like the door, and so do the dogs.
Very pleased with this product. We live in chilly Sweden and for extra draughtproofing we bought two doors and installed one flap inside the door and one outside. There’s extremely little draught and it’s much quieter than the hard flap that we hade earlier. Looks good too!
My dog really appreciates this door (and the cat next door too!). It has a cover when not in use. We bought a special dirt collector mat to prevent too much dirt being trailed in and we are very happy with it.
Researched a few pet doors. He previously had a similar cat door by Staywell so new the brand and expected it to be of good quality. Its great for my dog. The magnetic closing works well (I did wonder if it would tend to stay open when dog had gone through) closing each time. Its really quiet and sometimes don’t even hear pooch going in or out. Did worry about the security aspect as it is quite a large opening but than burglar would have to be tiny to get through it. The door insert seems quite safe and secure.
For two years we had the cheaper, hard plastic version, until it finally broke and I replaced it with this model. The rickety plastic version crashed and bashed noisily every time the dog went in/out, and drove us nuts at night. This one, on the other hand, is almost silent! It’s taller but slightly thinner than the previous flap, but still fine for a medium-large spaniel. Altogether it’s MUCH tidier to look at, easier to clean, and best of all it’s QUIET!! Brilliant – wish I’d bought it sooner.
This is a brilliant cat flap and in fact also fits our Tibetan Terrier who likes to use a cat flap as well! It’s much better than the one we had before mainly due to the bendy plastic which also allows our 16 year old cat to go through it and she couldn’t use the previous one because the plastic was hard and she couldn’t push through. So all round a great success – we are very pleased with it..
Good Quality it was more expensive than some other dog flaps but you only get what you pay for. No problems with this at all and if I move I will order another.
Having had a number of plastic cat flaps in the past, which the dog destroyed in a very short time, I decided to try this. I am so far delighted with it. It was easy to fit and looks much neater than any other we have had before and, fingers crossed, the dog has shown no intention of tearing it up.
UPDATE 1: 10/01/14 Two months down the line and no problems yet.
Very happy with this purchase – good quality. Has been holding up very well as being used by two nutty dogs and one cat! I love the fact that it’s so quiet upon entry and exit – our other pet doors have been noisy in the past.
We have a well built male burmese cat ( and his older friend) who has destroyed other cat flaps when they wre turned to the lock position. This one with its solid shutter has defeated him and keeps the drafts out at night!
I had a small one of these for the cats been installed 8 years or so now and still looking good and working. Also had a different style of cat flap in another door and the dog raced down the garden with it around her neck!!
These Petsafe flaps are fabulous easy to install, no draughts and it doesn’t matter what speed the dog hits it with!!
Tried to post a photo but unsuccessful – but it does look good
Fabulous, really can recommend this pet door, I have 3 crazy jack russells and was worried if I bought a rigid plastic one they may get trapped if they tried to rush through the door at the same time, so this is safety for them as its flexible. Stayed more or less closed in recent storm and after a little initial introduction (follow the guidelines) sellotape flap up for awhile then I coaxed them through with treats, now they love being able to go in and out and what a peace of mind for us when we have to leave them on their own. I would definately recommend this, also I put a non slip mat behind door when I go out so they don’t slip on floor tiles if they rush through, as they do!
Straightforward to fit & strong.
The door does swing inwards when the wind is blowing off the sea but as we live practically on the beach this isn’t a fault of the door!
The boys got used to it very quickly and they can still make a quick exit to chase anything that moves!!!
The lockable inner door is an excellent idea for when we are out.
Our super sized Selkirk was getting stuck in our original so we got this. Plenty big enough and once the plastic door is sited correctly shuts perfectly. We had a thin wooden door which meant my FIL had to build a frame for the door to fit to. On a thicker door no problem.
if you are fitting this in a UPVC door consider the clearance above the pet door frame as the cover needs to be able to slide up and out and if you have a panel door the middle horizontal bar will obstruct this.
The cat flap seems excellent; it’s well constructed and quiet.
However, our (wooden) door is 10mm thick. The entire cat flap assembly consists of two metal parts (each a panel to sit flush with the door and a short “tunnel” going through the door). The two “tunnels” slot into each other. When slotted together, the gap between the insides of the two panels is about 25mm. If the door is thicker than this (presumably up to the length of the supplied screws), I’d imagine there’s no problem. However, if you have a 10mm door, there’s 15mm worth of gap, so there would be hard edges and the whole thing wouldn’t stay in one place. Unless the suppliers expect you to cut the aluminium down (which I doubt given the position of the serial number, and the likely sharp edges it would produce), or I’ve missed some feature, I don’t think the Amazon description of “for doors from 9.5mm” is correct.
We got round this by using some 18mm-thick wood (an old shelf), cut to a rectangle the size of the outer edge of the flap (about 200x300mm), with a 150x245mm hole in the middle the size of the “tunnel”, plus 7mm holes for the cat flap’s screws to go through; this then adds to the “sandwich” so instead of panel/door/panel, we have panel/door/extra wood/panel, and this works fine (and looks OK).
So: be prepared for some woodwork if you have a thin door!
Well made product should last years my only gripe when fitting it was a couple of the pre drilled holes didnt line up exactly so needed a bit of persuasion. It looks good and my dogs soon got the hang of it within hrs,a staffie and border terrier 🙂
My puppies have been using this for about 2/3 weeks – we’d be lost without it now! It seems unfair that we didn’t have one before now! I love it that my puppies have the freedom to go out in the garden when they need/want to and since we’ve got it, there have been no accidents indoors. The prodcut itself is briliant too. Although the weather has been warm, I know that when winter comes I will not need to worry about a draught.
We had always had the basic versions of Staywell cat and dog doors previously but decided that we would opt for the aluminium variety this time. Wow! What a difference. The quality is tip top and we cannot hear it being used by either the cat or the dog. Now bearing in mind that the dog is a six month old Miniature Schnauzer, who bombs rather than comes through the flap, that is really understating how quiet it is. The quality of the closing panel is also solid and well thought out.
I would recommend this unequivocally to anyone considering buying a new cat/dog flap. I cannot see us having to order replacements and the original cost of 29-67 wasn’t much higher than the basic model. Well worth every penny for the undisturbed night’s sleep we’re now getting.
Bought this to enable my dog to go out in the garden on his own – especially when it was raining! It was easy to install and Oscar was soon using it to go in and out on his own! Really good buy would recommend.
We switched to this cat flap after our tom cat chewed his way through a plastic one after objecting to being shut in one night! With the metal frame and heavy drop cover, it is a really secure and solid cat flap. Our dogs also like to stick their heads out of it to see what is going on and we have no worries about them getting stuck (German Shepherd and Collie).
Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it if you have either a pretty big moggy or one that has chewed out a plastic cat flap!
I have fitted the pet door in a wall having made a liner through the wall with some 16mm plastic facsia boarding. The door being on the outside of the wall means that to block it off with the supplied blanking door you have to go outside to fit it. It would be better if the inner aluiminium frame had the sliding bit for blanking it off. Apart from that it does an excellent job as it is very quite compared to a normal pet door.
i bought this for a friend and she said that it was brilliant very quiet and very strong after having bought a few plastic ones that did’nt last long and there was’nt much differencee in the price it was a bit bigger also so she was very pleased with it.
Having already bought one of these for an internal door when the plastic one on the outside finally cracked I thought I’d get another one of these. Being metal it’s very durable and the plastic flap is practically silent in operation – no more banging and clattering late at night.
Only downside is that the design seems to have changed, this new door has plastic screws that poke through the “outside” frame and are trimmed off with a knife when fitted. This differs from the previous model which held the screws internally without coming through the frame. Just makes the outside look a little untidy instead of a flush metal surface.
However in practical use it’s superb.
got tired of the plastic flaps cracking on the other staywell pet doors so replaced them with this .While the flap is flexible and will last a lot longer ,it tends to blow inwards in gusty winds – room gets very cold . .Wish the door had a stronger magnetic strip or some way of staying put on windy days .Any suggestions please ?
This cat flap really is the dog’s…..no that’s wrong but you get my meaning. I have had various plastic versions in the past all of which my boisterous cats have trashed. This aluminium Staywell pet door is so solidly constructed that I think it will virtually impossible for them to break. Powder coated with steel braces at each corner, quiet in operation and good at keeping the wind out All in all a superb product. Well done Staywell!
Easy to use – the dog got the hang of it quickly. The flap is quiet and sometimes when I’m working at the table next to it I don’t hear the dog go out! Like the fact it can be locked at night (to avoid foxes coming in) or if I’m away or out with the dog.
i have had the dog flap with the solid door and replaced it several times as my 2 dogs dive through it as some speed, this one seems much better, is 100x quieter. a little cutting away on my door was required due to size difference but now looks nice and neat.
I have never had a dog flap for my pervious dogs but decided to get one fitted because I had to get up in the night to let my toy poodle puppy out. It was delivered at 3pm fitted by 4pm and the dog was using it by 5pm. I now get to spend all night in bed bliss.
Really great product, especially when you have a rather enthusiastic Westie who has broken 3 traditional doggy doors!!
This one though has a rubber flap with a magnetic catch so should last a good while longer.
Would deffinately recommend this for owners of ‘over enthusiastic’ pooches!
This door has stood the test of time and is a good buy if you have pets that ‘argue’ over who’s going through first! Because it’s flexible it is strong and closes well to keep out draughts. I found that the rigid plastic doors often got wedged open in the past. Returning home to a freezing house is no fun – so I would recommend this one!
Could not believe how well made this was, so strong and sturdy and they way you lock it down is just brilliant. Took my dog a couple of days to get used to it but then he’s a bit of a drama queen. Brought a new puppy some weeks later and she went straight out through it. Don’t buy the cheap plastic ones if you want quality.
I ordered the wrong size (medium, should have ordered large). Sent it back, got a refund and ordered the large – no problems and good service.
I had to order this flap because a new dog was so scared of the noise of the old plastic one that he would not use it. This one is silent, so no problems there, and seals better than the one it replaced. I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone with a nervous dog.
We use to have the plastic style dog flap ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Staywell-Petsafe-Original-2-Way-Medium/dp/B000LXRCDY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1349858154&sr=8-2 ) which is smaller and slightly wider . . . the thing is with the old style door our Jack Russel was getting through them like chew sticks. Anyhow the fitting was a little tricky due to the change of shape, but it can be done and i was finished within an hour. I could tell the difference immediately in how it was stopping the cold coming through into the kitchen.
It seems to be made to a much higher standard than the plastic one, and if i had my time again i would have gone for this one from the start . . .only time will tell in how it lasts.
but all in all a very happy customer, it’s worth paying that little bit more for the quality
did a lot of searching and reading reviews and decided on this pet door which i fitted into our pvc panelled door,
took a little while maybe 2hrs in total but well worth it my westie and border terrier love it within an hour they were in and
out as i was worried my 7 year old would not do it but no problem at all,no noise at all when they use it.I am going to buy a spare flap as a spare just in case as my border is a pup and chews everything but so far so good.
This dog flap is brilliant. Our dog ate the three previous flaps and the cost of replacing them was more than the cost of this product. He cannot get his teeth around this one, and seems to understand the way it opens easier – he’s not very bright! Although sceptical at first, it is less draughty than a conventional one. My OH very practical so fitting was easy but bolts were not deep enough for our door. However thrilled and fully recommend.
My cocker spaniel loves his new dog flap. It is heavy and flexible, and the magnetic strip on the bottom ensures it closes every time he passes through it. It is also much quieter than the plastic versions, which make a loud bang and clatter every time your pet goes out to explore. The provided template makes it easy to mark your door before jigsawing. Very pleased.
