Very easy to handle and cuts a treat, and no lead to watch or trip over, very highly recommended
Great bit of kit, but not the lightest, would recommend
Did 50m of conifer hedge on both sides using 1 4ah battery. Cut as effectively as my mcallister 240v but so much easier without having a wire.
Came very quick and a good buy. not used yet.
I found this trimmer easy to use, the fact you can change the angle of the blade makes it easy for cutting the front and back of the hedge.
This is the second one I’ve bought (for my brother-in-law this time). I’m delighted with the balance and ease of use. 2 x 5 amp non-branded batteries are enough to tire me out, they last a long time, though the fast charger is pretty quick. It’s much easier and more convenient than corded models and will cut through quite substantial hedge branches. The sweeper for doing tops is effective. We have been really impressed with its performance and have bought other Ryobi One+ equipment because the ease of use with one set of batteries. Highly recommended.
Will trim but also go through wood (take it slowly) about the size of my finger without much trouble. It was also 1/4 of the way through a large armoured cable in the bushes before I noticed so be warned this a seriously good bit of kit. Nice one Ryobi!
Very long blade that cuts through branches up to about a 5p coin.
My wife has been using it and she is not that strong. 4amp hour battery last about 2 hours of use
Great hedge trimmer. I have laurel and yew hedges that need fortnightly trimming in the growing season, this copes easily. I use with a 4ah battery which is enough for my needs. I originally bought as a backup to my ageing electric flymo, but find I rely on this more and more. Using it for really thick branches would be an abuse I feel.
It’s up there with the leaf blower. No issues now when trimming the hedge. Thank you one +
I just realised I’ve had this hedge trimmer for just over 3 years now. It’s not often that I’ve bought a cordless power tool that I’ve been unreservedly pleased with, but I’m totally pleased this time.
I bought it to do maintenance trimming of 15metres of Ivy hedging (very rampant), 17metres of Conifer hedging and 4 metres of Laurel hedging. All are about 2metres high. This trimmer just gets on with the job, making it a pleasure to work with. I stress that I’ve only ever expected maintenance trimming from it – it’s not the tool for heavy duty hacking back of a long neglected hedge! But for annual or 6 monthly trimming I’ve found it’s very good.
P.S. I should perhaps mention that I keep the blade well lubricated with one of WD40’s ptfe sprays formulated for use on garden tools.
Ideal and flexile no cables makes it easy working in remote areas
Used this a few times now and really happy with it. Not as powerful as a petrol one (with 2.0 battery) but no way near as heavy either. Does the job well and without fuss
Hedge trimming anywhere you like. No cable to worry about, so ultra convenient.
Lighter than a corded trimmer, so easier to trim tall hedges without the use of ladders.
Works with my batteries including the knock-off I bought on Ebay.
Great tool.
Love the cordless hedge trimmer. It is so much easier to manoeuvre around the garden without about tripping over wire or cutting through the wire.
Only used it the once but seems like a good bit of kit. Went through hedges, bushes, shrubbery and very small branches with ease. Does what it’s meant to do really. Not very loud and light enough.
Tidied up my conifers super quickly and easy. Right through the twigs and didn’t get stuck on anything. Initially I was a bit nervous of using this but was instilled with confidence with the safe guards and multi triggers so any fear of me accidentally cutting myself was put to rest. The Hedge sweep attachment was really handy at knocking off and guiding the trimmings. Not overly heavy and the battery lasted long enough for me to fill my garden waste bin.
It’s very powerful and cuts through quite thick stems of my llelandii hedge. The ability to turn the body at ninety degrees to the blade makes straight cutting easier.
My wife wanted to trim the hedges. She was like Michael Myers running round the garden with this. Struggled in thicker branches/twigs but did the job nicely.
Really pleased with this, helped to clear some overgrown shrubs and bushes easily. Not the cheapest product but we are very pleased with this addition to the other Ryobi items we have.
I bought this to chop down a large bush. It’s easy to get stuck into chopping but as long as you remember it is a hedge trimmer, not a chainsaw then it works great. Yes it will get jammed on thicker branches but it automatically cuts out and is easy to remove. BUT – it lacks safety features. When handling the blades to remove stuck branches, you need to remove the battery as there is no safety lock.It is difficult to carry with both hands without turning it on and when it is swinging around your legs it’s a bit worrying although I doubt you could cut your legs with it. You can’t operate it with one hand though so it isn’t possible to chop off your fingers either. The hedge sweeper attachement makes it very easy to cut hedges and sweep the debris off in one go. Overall a superb peice of kit but be careful when handling it as with any power tool.
This is a great hedge trimmer and managed to do about 100 foot of beech hedge on a 2Ah battery. Struggled a bit with the thicker branches, I don’t really rate the hedge sweep attachment although that might be better on a different type of hedge. It was good to change the handle direction for vertical cuts, although this was sometimes difficult to manoeuvre. I have upgraded to a 5Ah battery which I think will improve the cutting power. The Ryobi One system is a really good option for cordless tools.
This trimmer works perfectly. I was able to do 2 hedges in 10 minutes which would normally take me up to an hour with a pair of shears. Even better that it can use the same battery as my lawn mower & drill
Will admit that what initially swung me towards the Ryobi trimmer was that I already had other Ryobi battery power tools and could use those batteries with this. But once I used it I was delighted with it. Lightweight, depending on the battery pack you use, powerful, good reach/blade length.
Only grumble is the instruction book is total rubbish. The section in English is right at the front and contains just the usual don’t be an idiot safety information. The actual instructions on how to use are in a picture section right at the back of the book. Couldn’t be further apart. Had worked it all out myself by the time I found it.
Well I was wondering how good this product would be , as I saw reviews for similar and some were not as good , even one star .
Being a long term user of Ryobi , I pull no punches when it comes to reviews , and I can say although it’s gonna be heavy , it’s well balanced , and very easy to use , and I have to say almost too easy as I felt that there needs to be an additional safety feature , it’s just too easy to switch on , having said that , there should be nobody near you , and with both hands on machine you will be safe .
I like the swivel change on the head to twist angles and the cutter is a complete savage. It destroys anything in its path . For that reason I’d give it top marks , and great value .
Really pleased with this addition to my Ryobi One+ collection. Surprisingly lightweight yet well built.
Quality excellent, used for trimming hedge, great job very pleased with result.
This so easy to use no more cables to cut through.
My attraction to this product was its compatibility to use batteries that fit with other Ryobi products I own, as with all items Ryobi design and innovation is first class. The inclusion of the Hedge Sweep importantly keeps debris clear of the cutting blades improving efficiency tremendously.
Having no cord is wonderful. No more slicing through the cable or trying to avoid doing so! The battery last a long time and the blades cut through privet, beech and conifer hedges with ease. It is slightly heavy but otherwise a quality product that I have had for over a year and a half.
Excellent bit of kit, light weight and the battery lasted till I had finished my jobs and still runs the strimme
i have various hedgetrimmers but all are heavy this is great but be aware you need to have or buy the batteries if you have the batteries which i already do it is really cheap for the quality
Very useful, it’s powerful enough to get most things done, doesn’t consume much power and the sweeping bar on top is extremely handy, wouldn’t buy a hedge trimmer without one again. I got it on sale so price was excellent.
Brilliant product . Easy to use .
I trimmed the nettles and hedges both and it did a great job
It is very easy to use and light weigh
As with all Ryobi products the hedge trimmer is good, lightweight and easy to use. Delivery was prompt. I have not yet discovered what I do with the hedge sweep?
Excellent piece of kit. My husband used a 5ah battery on it and it was still going strong hours later.
Saved so much work! I was surprised at the thickness of branches that it cut.
Simple tool to use. I use it to prune hedges and shrubs and is quite able to deal with the slightly thicker bits. The only thing That I think is worth considering is the fitting of a SAFETY. TRIGGER in the handle to prevent accidental operation of the trimmer when picking it up or altering the angle of the handle such as on the strimmer.
Ryobi do it again. There one+ tools are the bees knees. I now have about 25 different tools from glue gun to lawn mower, this hedge trimmer is absolutely fantastic very light weight easy to use. Cuts through branches with ease. Using it with a 4ah battery after 30 minutes of cutting I’d only used up 1 light of the battery. Very good value for money, get yourself one, you won’t be disappointed
Impressed, easy to use, works well. Quiet, better than 2 stroke. The 5.0Ah battery gets me all round a big garden without any recharging. Quality product. Will probably buy some more Ryobi small tools as the same battery works in all
Barry Hill
buy it! Don’t listen to the negative reviews. I have a 47m meter hedge on one side of my back garden and 20m on the other. Not to mention my entire frond garden. 20 minutes and I was done. Used to take hours! I honestly can’t belive I got all that done and had half a battery left… these were not small hedges at all. It would be worth mentioning i did use a big battery 5amp 18v. When and if it breaks I will get another one 100%
Great hedge cutter especially when used with 5.0AH battery. I cut three large hedges at the front of the house including a Red Robin and a Holly hedge. There is plenty of power and the blades are very sharp. This is so much easier than a corded or petrol tool. No complaints, another great tool from Ryobi.
Great, but heavy. Needs a 36v battery – the ryobi One+ 18v batteries will not work
Recently purchased this as getting increasingly worried using a corded one. Our front hedge is quite some way from the house and having metres of cable lying around was an accident waiting to happen.
Removed from packaging, popped a battery in, and bingo. So much easier to use without the inherent dangers of electrical leads.
Too early to comment on battery longevity but it’s plenty powerful enough and cuts through foliage like the proverbial hot knife. Great tool!
Very pleased with this hedge cutter . So easy and relevatively quiet to use ! Good buy for domestic use .
So much easier than using a cabled hedge trimmer – cutting hedges is now so much easie
After having other hedge cutters over the years ,I’m more than happy with this Ryobi tool as it gives a very efficient cut and as cut up to 22mm which is excellent.Found it very easy to use and lightweight in comparison to other products used in past. The tool also comes with 3 year guarantee which is an addiction bonus.
Had this about 6 months and been faultless. Lightweight and quiet operation just like electric compared to petrol, without the risk and restriction of a lead. Just need to have batteries available and charged or I’m sure going battery operated is an expensive option. I have various ryobi tools so investment in multiple batteries is Worthwhile.
Bought to replace a rather weedy Bosch hedge trimmer. This one is a lot more powerful and charging is a breeze as the batteries are easy to remove and common to the Ryobi range.
No complaints at all.
I don’t normally do reviews as most of them can’t be trusted. However I looked at loads of YouTube videos on which hedge trimmer to go for rent for this one what’s the rotating head. I am very familiar with Ryobi tools that we use at work namely drills and angle grinders. This particular piece of equipment was an unknown and wasn’t sure how I was going to perform. When it arrived it was very quickly opened and I used a partly used battery from my drill and went to work on trimming the ivy from the front of the house and along the fence. I couldn’t do the whole of the wall as birds are still nesting but wanted to tidy up the bottom part for access and tidiness and only took 10 minutes. Took 25 minutes to clean up afterwards. Very easy to use and the rotating handle was brilliant. Would definitely recommend this product to others And realise they’re not the cheapest and if you haven’t got any batteries you will need to buy some again batteries are not cheap which is the only downside. Not particularly the lightest to use but I found it okay to use and didn’t create any problems hence only four stars on weight. Five stars and everything else on the build quality is excellent as always with their tools. Hope this review helps any potential purchaser.
If you already have a Ryobi battery and charger (or even if not) this tool is mint!
You don’t need a massive battery like for the lawnmower; the 2.5Ah battery will do the job effortlessly with plenty of charge to spare. The 2.5Ah batt. also sits flush with the bottom of the unit.
The adjustable handle grip is easy to use and makes it super easy to cut from all angles. It really is very very good.
The circular saw uses a Ni-cad battery every 15 minutes, and struggles to cut 9mm ply.
The jigsaw is a little better.
But I’ve got two batteries and a charger, so I thought I’d try one more tool: the hedge trimmer.
FIRST; Amazon sent it by Hermes: big mistake. Hermes is cheap for a reason.
SECOND; The trimmer worked straight out of the box, using a battery that the circular saw had used for ten minutes. It cuts like a dream, provided you don’t expect too much from it. This year’s soft growth (it’s April) was easy, but it struggled with thicker old wood.
The ‘sweep’ works well, and solves the old problem of removing cut pieces from the top of the hedge.
After a few minutes changing the angle was easy.
THIRD; It’s heavier than I expected; but trimming hedges is always a workout and it’s a lot lighter than the petrol long-reach machine.
I’m pleased. I now plan to trim every month rather than paying the lads to do it once a year. If the machine lasts a year it will have been money well spent.
Very nice product, I’ve changed from a 2 stroke one to this and the benefits are:
No 2 stroke fuel to store and mix
Hardly any noise
No fumes
No motor maintenance
Very little difference in performance, in fact I would say this is somehow more powerful than the petrol one (I’m using a 5ah battery and would recommend doing so)
Lightweight
Uses the same charger and batteries as my other tools.
All in all very pleased with it, would recommend.
So far I love these. Have a reasonable size garden with a mixture of bushes and this cuts through no problem. These hedge trimmers are fine for myself but can see that some people may find these slighty heavy (For example my mum). I don’t have an orginal one plus battery but the one I do works fine and longer than I expected.
Got this after ordering the pole version of Ryobi one plus cutter and returning it for refund.
I’m very happy with this one when using a 5mh battery, more than enough power to do what I need it for and lightweight enough not to cripple me as the pole version would of done, the hedge sweep is a great idea that does work.
This is a great hedge cutter and I really liked the lockable rotating handle and quiet operation. The anti-jam feature is annoying however and after a while will cut out on smaller twigs, this isn’t a cutter for high-torque, high-powered hedge lowering or thinning – the Ryobi OPT1845 18V One+ long pole hedge cutter has the bite for this and also the Ryobi RHT36B60R 36V 2-speed hedgecutter.
easy to use and cuts well.
Obviously Not as powerful as a petrol strimmer but excellent for the smaller quick jobs that need tidying up
First class quality, easy to use and good value for money. Luckily I already had 2 batteries from my Ryobi drill, so you must factor these in for the total price. My 18V (1.3Ah) batteries seem to last for about 20 to 25 mins each – cutting time.
I am very pleased with it and would recommend.
A little bit heavy for some people, but that’s all gone when you start cutting .
I like how quiet it is how strong it is and easy to use no leads or petrolWould recommend
This is an excellent tool. Last few years I’ve used corded heavy duty hedge trimmers. So far this has done as good a job. Still planning to use existing corded long reach trimmer, but the minute it has a problem I’ll be looking at the ryobi long reach to complement this one.
If you have the battery already it’s a no brainer. If you need to trim a hedge it will do it.
looked around first! although have many ryobi tools! for me this is very good at its job although sound a bit tiny, very sharp and found the sawing action just fine when used properly!
Excellent trimmers, used almost daily as I’m a gardener. Much easier to use than petrol trimmers, only used half a battery on the hedge in the picture.
Slices through hedge like butter. Much more powerful than I thought it would be.
We already own the Ryobi ONE+ OPT1845 pole hedge trimmer so when our old hedge trimmer we replaced it with this. We are very pleased with it, it does exactly what it says it on the box.
Excellent hedge trimmer, cuts very well, even the thicker branches. Has an add on piece which clears the debris as you cut. Simple but works very well. The range of one+ tools are fantastic
Old scrotum…my gardener and family retainer, prefers this over the petrol hedge trimmer. He suggests it’s far lighter, less noisy and more manouverable than any other hedge trimmer he has previously used. He should know…I love watching him work whilst I enjoy a pimms no.1, or two, on our manicured lawn conversing with, the beautiful and deeply engaging creature, Hermione. A magical moment indeed.
The only criticism I have with this product is that the blades are not flush with the motor and handle, therefore making it difficult to cut a perfectly flat surface.
I bought the Ryobi one as I already have a number of their tools and batteries. If you don’t already have a charger and battery it becomes an expensive item.
Often I have found that battery tools are a lightweight version of the mains version, that is not the case with this, it is a heavy duty hedge cutter and quite heavy.
It has an adjustment so you can change the angle between the handle and cutting blade.
Although it has the usual safety controls, press two buttons, they were well placed and not inconvenient.
It comes with a slide on attachment to sweep cuttings away from the blade, I found this quite useful when cutting the top of the hedge as I could sweep the cuttings from the top of the hedge in one action, not much use when cutting the face of hedges as it only gets in the way.
I use it with a 2.5A battery which is more than enough for several cuttings of my 65ft hedge.
Ryobi never lets you down and this one is another winner. Easy to use, lightweight and quite powerful. It’s all you need to keep control of those hedges.
lightweight and easy to use. Gets into award spaces. Bigger battery gives longer useage time .
Nice ,easy to use no cable to worry about, great idea the sweepe
