Good if you have very tall hedges to trim. To heavy for every day easy use.

This is a nice product, but you will need to be strong to use it on the long pole for any length of time.

Deceptively heavy, have to be really careful with wrists must keep them straight. Injured my wrists twice and learned the hard way. Use wrist straps now and the harness given. Strong and durable product though

    Very useful tool
Excellent bit of kit for tricky hedge trimming. Not the lightest when reaching over but once you get the technique right it is very good. Cuts clean and easily.

It’s a workout for the arms particularly if you are using it almost vertically. But does a good job though. Very happy with the purchase. I am a DIYer and haven’t been disappointed yet with anything ryobi.

Pole hedge trimmer with removable extensio
Exellent product which I have only used once up to now but when one gets used to the handling it gets easier.
The machine cuts well and the extensions and the cutting angles that can be used are great plus. For lower hedges the advantage of the removable extension is a boon.
All in all this is a very capable machine and gets the job done and I am well pleased with i

This is a well made and designed product. It is easy to use and has sufficient battery life for most jobs. It is good value for money and worth spending the little extra to get a quality product.

    Great piece of ki
I think this is a fantastic piece of tooling, being a gardener I have used this quite a lot, it may not sound that powerful but it does the job really well, it’s light weight but when you use the extension pole it is a bit hard to control with all the weight at one end the harness is a big help for this. I completed about 28m of hedge on one battery. My only grip is with ryobi selling the tools without battery’s.

    Quality tool
A nice piece of equipment, easy to use although a little heavy when used at full stretch. At the moment I am using the smaller batteries that I received with other tools, so battery life not as good as it could be with the larger battery. Useful though to have several tools using the same battery.

    Quality tool, would recommend
Great product, quality build and feels like it will last a long time if looked after and serviced appropriately.
Do bare in mind that the further you are away from your cutting area, especially using the extension pole at more horizontal angle, you will find that it gets heavy to hold quickly as the motor is in the head unit.

Cut well though awkward for hedge sides
Shame there isn’t another adjustment for doing the side of hedges; the only one available makes an awkward angle and when using straight the battery catches on the hedge itself. Could have done with an inbetween position. Plenty of adjustments for the hedge tops.

    Perfect for body builders
Weighs a fair bit and weight is not well positioned so even without the extension it requires considerable strength and stamina to operate. I couldn’t wield it at full length but fortunately I know a strong man who could. Hedge was trimmed quickly and results very good.

It took my husband a couple of minutes to get the hang of it because it can be quite unwieldy with both extension shafts on. But once he got into his stride he said it did a brilliant job. It is too heavy for me to use which suits me fine as I am happy to be able to point out all the bits he has missed.

    Cuts really well very pleased!
I’ve cut three hedges this week and has coped well on all occasions. I have been using the 4ah battery and easily completed each task. What you should note is, that once fully extended becomes heavy to use. I prefer using just using the single pole if possible. You have much more balance and control on the single pole. Im a 38 yr old male and by day 3 my arms were tired. Overall really happy, cuts well and with the 4ah battery (new) easily gets you 45-1hr of cutting time.

    Excellent produc
Used this on a conifer hedge 10m long by 3m high in conjunction with a 5 Ah battery. I was surprised at the size of some of the branches it cut through. My only criticism, as others before me is the weight. With the motor being at the top, it takes quite an effort to yield and I didn’t even attempt to use the extension pole. The trigger position is on one end, which limits how far you can reach with the other hand to achieve a balance. Maybe a secondary trigger part way along the pole would help with the balance!

Very good replacement for long-reach petrol cutter from Screwfix, which was noisy, heavy, unreliable and took a real effort to change to longest reach. Impressed with this product, bought a spare battery to keep topped up, and just done two-thirds of our very difficult hedge, able to change standard to long-reach effortlessly which manages cutting of 8 foot wide hedge (with platform). I would recommend. Cost me less for this one year than a commercial cut would have, which is what I’d have had to do without it.

Golden Review Award: 99 From Our UsersVERY USEFUL POLE TRIMMER USED ALONGSIDE ANOTHER RYOBI HEDGETRIMMER
I am keen Ryobi ONE+ cordless ONE+ battery fan, owning many Ryobi tools using third party batteries =- 4-5.5A. In the main the Ryobi garden tools are light to use (I am not keen on heavy petrol garden machines — I don’t have loads of upper body strength nor strong wrists nor keen on handling fuel nor inhaling the fumes n or fighting with tools that won’t start etc etc)..

A challenge is to understand the different Ryobi battery hedge trimmers on offer – and how to choose…

We have some 300 feet of hedges on our main track alone — and other areas too – as we live on what was a farm. I am in my late 50s so tools must be light and without cords too. Our requirement is beyond the average cut in most gardens. We cut at least twice a year depending on growth.

BACKGROUND: In 2017 I bought a Ryobi OHT1850X cordless extended reach hedge trimmer — ONE system battery. At the time I bought this as a compromise which I thought would work. I didn’t feel that I needed a pole trimmer and felt a standard hedge trimmer wouldn’t have enough reach. I changed my view in 2019. See below. However after 2 and a half years heavyish use the 1850HX motor burnt out, lots of smoke. In fact it had smoked a couple of times shortly after purchase in 2017 when I realised the motor didn’t seem to cut out adequately when it jammed (inevitable) — ie reached a branch slightly too tough to cut etc. I stuck with it. From that point on I was very careful and tried hard not to jam it. Also, the grey handle in the middle came loose a couple of times during my use. I had to screw it back in. The 1850 HX never seemed very powerful . It also seemed unwieldy, overall a design too compromised although it gives you some extra reach, not huge amount in my view after much use. In retrospect before the motor finally burnt out I felt it never quite worked for me overall. However I felt the machine had given back reasonable value — it has done a lot of work – and given I am bought into Ryobi ONE anyway so I considered what to replace it with in the Ryobi ONE range.

REASON FOR PURCHASE IN 2019: I needed a replacement and decided to buy two machines: a Ryobi pole hedge trimmer OPT1845 (ONE system battery again) AND a more standard hedge trimmer OHT1855R (ONE system battery again). That was the right decision.
To me these seem much better designed machines to the 1850HX — less prone to jamming and I suspect the motors do/will more quickly cut out if jamming is a threat – ie that aspect of motor design may have improved — Ryobi don’t say that but that’s how it seems to me. Time will tell. Both machines seem superior in design and complement each other well.
The 45cm Pole trimmer has lots of reach. I have used the extension pole (ie 2.9 metres reach) and this longest length is not easy to manoeuvre but with practice it is very usable for short periods. It is heavy and does strain your arms. Without the pole the reach is still good – and somewhat easier/lighter to use – but you need to set it up for the length you need, of course at the time. We have areas of height and width that require the longest reach. This device works well in my view. This 45cm pole trimmer doesn’t seem to have a smoky breakdown if it jams a moment. I think the design of that aspect is better than my old 1850HX
Likewise the OHT1855R has same attribute — feels more able to just stop and not smoke (!) and the reach of 55cm is very good. This is a very light machine, ideal for me with lots of hedging etc. I haven’t used the rotating handle just yet. The ‘Hedgetrimmer Sweep’ feature is useful too. However the priority here has always been to just have trimmers that work / last etc — I am not after the very highest quality finish. The finish is good / very good and that is fine by us. Our replacement trimmers seem to have the capability of ‘sawing’ through thicker stems too.
These tools will last a fair time on the larger 5 amp batteries (third party I use), say 30-45 minutes pretty much continuous use. That aspect is no problem if you have 2-3 batteries. I have 6, more than enough as I need a break too!

I use a Ryobi self propelled petrol mower for now and await a good Ryobi battery equivalent. I think that could be a long wait. I need a genuinely strong and durable battery machine and think it will be many years before one will be on sale.

A good reach with the extension pole fitted, the support strap helps by taking some of the weight although I found it a bit difficult to keep it level When reaching to full extent.

I have high and wide garden hedges to cut with restricted access. I previously had to climb on top of the hedges to access all parts of it. This product helped me to cut them more easily and safely. As other folks have said it is heavy to use but this is unavoidable given it is basically a cutter on the end of a long pole and all the weight is furthest away from your body. However, it is this characteristic that allows you to quickly and easily cut areas of hedge and bushes which you could not otherwise reach. I use a conventional electric hedgecutter to cut the easy to reach parts of the hedge and this product when it’s length is required. You will find it gives your forearms a very good workout if using it in the straight position and most folk will find 30 minutes cutting is more than enough for them. I will happily tolerate the product characteristics because it does the job i need it to do and it keeps me safe. Great product that i wouldn’t want to be without.

    Surprisingly good
considering relatively light weight (compared to our old mains one). it made short shrift of our hedges and shrubs and small trees. standard battery (2Ah) lasted as long as I did (an hour), as it’s quite hard work holding it up at full stretch. Without the extension it was good for ordinary trimming. will probably get more gear in this range. had to get a manual pole pruner to do our tallest trees, but you couldn’t extend it any more safely. at least one doesn’t have to worry about cutting the cord.

My one comment and this isn’t really a criticism but it is quite heavy and therefore it makes my arms ache when using for more than 10/15 minutes at a time. We have a very, very large laurel hedge which is high and it’s made a great job of trimming it back. I’ve found the neck strap a bit of a nuisance as it was hard to get the strap to the right length for the angle I was using the trimmer. Overall I would recommend.

I’ve had a cheap petrol hedge trimmer for years and it was problematic starting and keeping it running. It was always cutting out and getting jammed
I was dubious of getting a battery powered trimmer. I didn’t think it would be powerful enough. Plus I didn’t want to pay big money for a Stihl despite knowing how good Stihl products are. I was very surprised at how good this is.. It cuts pretty thick branches easily and haven’t had it jam once. Battery life is decent too. I get about 40 mins use out of it. So much less fuss than a petrol version. Would definitely recommend

    Good but not grea
As usual a good Ryobi tool but is not a lightweight device. Great for trimming the side of a hedge but get on a tall pair of steps with the extension piece attached and it is quite hard work. I would certainly recommend a 5 ah battery to counteract some of the weight even if you use the retaining strap. Not got the power of my cheap Titan mains powered trimmer, but I wouldn’t expect it to. The very fact you haven’t got a mains cord tangling up below you makes up for it. Still worth buying though.

This the second Ryobi we have bought because we also needed one for our holiday home ,so rather thank keep moving the tool between two locations we invested in another trimmer. Robust reliable and easy to use buying a second tool it just had to be Ryobi!

Works well and does the job
Since buying I have used this a few times. On full extension it can seem a little unwiledly but that is where the harness comes into play. Doesn’t eat though the battery power but that depends on how tough the work is.

Like a warm knife through butter. This hedge trimmer is ultra portable and with the extension pipe has an amazing reach. Used it for the best part of three hours to trim hedges and small tree branches back into order and (the 5Ah) battery was at 60% afterwards.

The saw capability (where it chews through thicker twigs) works very well.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersVery powerful and effective but it is heavy
I already use Ryobi One+ tools so I was confident this would be a good product, but I have been surprised at how powerful it is. it made light work of cutting some huge hedges in our garden made up of a variety of conifers and other dense shrubs. I thought the claim on the write up about cutting through 18mm branches would turn out to be a bit far fetched, but with a bit of perseverance it certainly worked its way through some whoppers.
It is a heavy tool and takes some strength, the strap helps a lot and I found that with a bit of practice it was possible to simply balance it on my waist while cutting up high.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersSuperb extended trimmer - especially if you already have other One+ tools, batteries etc
I bought this when it was at a great price on Prime day. I already have a selection of Ryobi One plus tools and garden equipment – so buying this as a bare tool i.e. without batteries and charger was ideal for me.

The run time when pairing this tool with a 4 or 5Ah battery is great, at full length you wouldn’t want to be holding it for longer than a battery lasts without a break anyway.
The articulating head is a really handy feature especially when topping off mid height hedges. The blades seem to cope with most hedges – anything too big is dealt with by my Ryobi One Plus pruner/mini chainsaw which use the same handle/extension poles.

Added to My Ryobi One growing collectio
Does the job especially on high hedges. I added this to my growing collection of Ryobi one tools as I am a landlord that looks after 3 properties and I do all the maintenance. Life is so much simpler when you don’t have to make arrangement to get access to mains and extension leads when you want to get things done

Golden Review Award: 55 From Our UsersEffective, good quality but very heavy to use
We have a long oak hedge which is about 2.2m high and a metre deep. I get vertigo on ladders (even step ladders) so I thought this hedge trimmer would allow me to keep the hedge under control without needing to climb the step ladder.

    And it is. But….

It’s too heavy for me to use effectively. I just don’t have the strength in my shoulders to hold the contraption up and move it with any degree of precision. For context – I’m a reasonably fit and strong woman in my 40’s. My male partner (similar age) has more success but even he can only wield the beast for about 20 minutes at a time and then needs a cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit 😉

It is a really well made piece of equipment, sturdy and clearly good quality, I just wish it were a little easier to use. I think I need to get down the gym and start lifting some serious weights and Ryobi need to look at the balance point to make it less top heavy.

I bought one of the little Ryobi hand held trimmers and I can do the sides of the hedge more easily with this but it takes a lot longer as the blade is so much shorter.

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersAmazing hedge trimmer for hard to reach places
If you doubt the effectiveness of battery garden tools, buy this !! It’s brilliant when partnered with a proper 4Ah Ryobi battery (don’t bother with the cheap imitation ones). I have the small chainsaw version as well and with the two you can tackle most hedge / tree work around your home. The poles are also interchangeable giving up to 7m of reach (not recommended by Ryobi but works fine).

The hedge trimmer can be angled allowing you to top hedges quite well, although the bar is quite short so don’t expect to do it in one pass. A full battery lasts a good hour of constant use or longer if you avoid cutting small branches with it!

Easy to clean and lubricate, really can’t fault it.

Golden Review Award: 25 From Our UsersBrilliance!
Previous to buying this, I had a corded telescopic hedge trimmer which did the job, but was cumbersome, heavy and had a cable which constantly kept getting wrapped around me, making it dangerous to use.

After reading reviews, I decided to buy this Ryobi One+ model, thinking that it would be much easier to use without the cables trailing along behind me. Don’t get me wrong, it is still heavy – especially if used with the larger 5.0aH battery, but with the lack of cables it is far easier to use and move around. It is also easily as powerful as a corded trimmer, and I have no yet seen it struggle to cut our trees and hedges in the slightest. An excellent buy.

Use this with a 5.0 battery and it managed an hour or so of heavy cutting (my ‘hedge’ was actually a 10ft high row of elder, blackthorn etc with many branches as thick as my thumb). The sawing function actually works. A little heavy when fully extended.

Brilliant! Have electric Ryobi Hedge Sweep but needed the higher reach. Have conifers and large chestnut tree. Squirrels keep storing chestnuts and trees appear! This is brilliant for keeping growth under control. Have the chainsaw also. One battery. Excellent. I am only 5′ 4″ tall and weigh in at circa 8 stone so not a hefty lady, now over 60. Quite a long tool without extension but manageable for me. The cut this tool gives is good. Saves me a fortune on getting someone in. Also I can keep under control by doing a bit as and when necessary. All the reviews have helped me to use this tool effectively. Thanks everyone.

    Excellent Hedge Trimme
I really like this cordless hedge trimmer. It gives me freedom to wander around the garden, it is rugged and it feels as if it will last. Also, being cordless means that I can’t chop the cable in two (something I’ve done rather too often).

The only reason I didn’t give it 5* is that it is really a bit too heavy for me to use as I would like. The trimmer has plenty of oomph to get round the garden, but sadly I don’t.

    But I still like it.

This cuts very well indeed with a 4 a.h Li ion battery it lasted the 2 hours of constant use required for the trees, laurels and other bushes in our garden.

It is nice that you can adjust the angel of the blades which makes it slightly easier for the higher work as it means you are not directly under what you are cutting.

Only down side, but as I would suspect it would be the same with any other similar product cannot be considered a problem with the product for review purposes is that fully extended it becomes top heavy.

I Would highly recommend this product.

Great bit of kit, indispensable for a high hedge. This can be fairly well balanced with the use of the shoulder strap but does prove a little heavy to use in the end. No surprise here, just simple physics due to the length. Well built and functional, battery life is good (I’m using a 5ah). The down side is that it cannot be converted into a short handled trimmer for easier use on smaller jobs so I have had to use a more conventional model for that. All the same, it’s nice not to climbing ladders!

Great product, much safer than balancing on ladders trying to cut hedges but it is very nose heavy. Best advice is to rest the cutter on the hedge and let the weight control the cut. Would be much easier to use if the strap connected behind the battery so you didn’t have to reach back so far to turn the damn thing on and off.
