Does what it says on the tin. A bit heavy but works very well.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis tool has done a job for us after the typical story of cutting thru the cable of the previous one.

As others have said, it is heavy. I didn’t get on with the shoulder strap I am a 6ft1″ triathlete and I struggled after 20-30 minutes fighting a 9-10ft hedge about 1m wide which we adopted when we moved. I needed an assistant to keep things like the cable in check.

The 90deg flat cut function is useful, but over a certain height or at a particular level of thickness, becomes unworkable. I found I had to have the assistant help me climb ladders, but the cutter in the long telescopic single pole formation, then sweep the hedge from the top, that worked reasonably well. In the end, we took about 2ft height off of about a 4m long hedge, but it was an epic battle. This also fixed the problem of reach, because the hedge was too deep to cut the whole width from front and back. There will be more coming off in the spring. I suspect when we get the hedge under control, this might be a much more agreeable regular task with this tool

I think if i was doing this again i might invest in hiring a chainsaw to hack thru it OR doing some thinning out of some branches first. If you or someone else has left the hedge untackled for some time, so the bark is thicker and tangled, you are going to struggle with any consumer device of this sort. But since I’m an obstinate b*gger I’ll be continuing with this.

Excellent piece of equipment, it certainly beats trying to balance on a step ladder on uneven ground to reach those higher hedges or bushes, the only minus side to it is it does get quite heavy after a while, good job for the shoulder strap, overall I’d certainly recommend them.

This did a good job on a hedge which had grown out of control and is difficult to access. Yes it is quite heavy but it needs to be in order to be strong. I found the hedge took most of the weight and it helps the bring weight to the cut. The trimmer will cope with quite thick branches.

Yes its top heavy cause the motor is at ‘wrong’ end. But i something like a Stihl is beyond my budget. However, the Ryobi comes apart very easily so i can use it as a standard sized hedge cutter as well. 2 in 1. Nice

Excellent bit of kit. Quite heavy when fully extended but nothing you wouldn’t expect. I have used much more expensive petrol versions in the past that are just as heavy. The fact the shaft splits is also hand for shorter hedges and for transporting.

  37. CHSThaddeu says:

     United Kingdom

Very heavy when at maximum height so need to use a careful technique to avoid overbalancing and loss of control. However far safer for a tall hedge than balancing on step ladders. Thoroughly recommended. Ability to vary length by omitting middle pole section adds versatility. Reliable after several uses this summer. Would recommend for what it is designed for, high reach work. Use a conventional trimmer for lower work as easier to handle.

Wasn’t sure after reading some of the reviews. I have a 50ft long, 8ft high, 4ft wide beech hedge, which this Ryobi has cut the time to trim by about 30%. I still needs ladders because of the width, but it really is great. The next one is a 10ft high leylandii – I am kind of confident with that too. Next time I will buy a battery powered trimmer as I wasn’t confident enough to pay the extra until I had tried this product.

Golden Review Award: 31 From Our UsersThe Ryobi pole hedge trimmer is a great product, with it’s fantastic length there nothing that I can’t reach. I have had long reach hedge trimmers before and they get so heavy at the cutting end but this one is lighter without losing it’s power and the fact that you can choose two different lengths is really great. If you try and cut some thicker stems than will not fit between the teeth with the Ryobi you can do a sawing action to get through them.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI bought the RPT4545M to trim the sides of a very tall Leylandii hedge in our garden. When I read the reviews on here before purchasing I was a little concerned about the comments that it’s too heavy, but I took the plunge as I was mainly going to be using it in a nearly vertical position with the blade pointing vertically. The hedge is around 5 metres tall, and I was aiming with the help of a 1 metre high decorating platform that I would be able to trim the sides right to the top (but obviously not cut along the top). I found the weight of it to be perfectly manageable, and this was even without using the shoulder strap (I needed to fully outstretch my arms above my head to reach the highest parts so the shoulder strap would of restricted me doing this). I am a 5′ 11 , 37 year old male, average/slim built but active, and I was able to use this trimmer for a couple of hours including swinging it over to 45 degrees at times to trim the bits overhanging my garden wall. I was also stood on a small platform to reach the highest bits, and holding it way above my head a lot of the time, it was still manageable to hold and balance. I was able to reach 4 metres high with it (5 metres stood on a standard 1 metre decorating platform) so you don’t need tons of muscle to be able to use this, and I don’t think the motor is too heavy. It assembles quickly and seems well made. The poles are made of fibreglass, they push together and then are secured by rotating large plastic threaded collars by hand which pulls the sections together tight. The cutting blade has quite wide teeth compared to my old standard hedge trimmers and copes well with some of the thicker old wood in the hedge. The cable is fairly thick and bright orange. I didn’t get chance to use it with the blade positioned at different angles, but it seems easily enough to adjust by pressing a button and rotating the head to either 0, 45 or 90 degrees. All in all it’s a very competent tool that I would recommend, I’m glad I didn’t for a cheaper option at the DIY stores.

Does all I wanted. A strong product. Better than the battery operated Garden Gear one I had bought. The only thing I can find to criticise is that it does not take the sweeper attachment that seemed a good idea. Can it be made to do so.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersGreat tool , well made and a quality item. The blade is sharp and cuts really well, the angle of the head is variable as is the length of reach using the extension. I wish I had bought this years ago, it has made cutting my very high hedge easier, quicker and gives a better finish not to mention the improved safety aspects. Recommended tool.

Bought this item as I have a conventional electric Ryobi trimmer which has lasted years without a problem. I need it to trim 9 foot hedging and trees. It does the job well but when used at full extension it is quite heavy to use for more than 5-10 minutes at a time ( I would regard myself as a fit 60 year old). It certainly gives the upper body a good workout, but be careful. The harness that comes with it is useless, otherwise I would have given 5 stars. If it lasts half the time my other Ryobi trimmer has, I’ll be even happier.

  67. WillyE50vjb says:

     United Kingdom

Positives: The Trimmer is very effective and far superior to my aging short one. I noticed its power made a difference and that combined with very sharp blades made cutting easier.
Negatives: Pole segments are difficult to assemble and detach. The trimmer at full pole length is heavy and difficult to control. Beware – unless you are a weight lifter you will only manage short sessions with it.

  68. JohnDean says:

     United Kingdom

I read all the reviews for pole saws I could get my hands on and, at the end of the day, weight seems to be the key issue. I can confirm that all the reviews are correct – yes the product is a bit on the heavy side – yes it will cut it’s was through some of the more substantial branches – yes after half an hour your arms a somewhat in need of a rest – BUT – in half an hour I had cut both sides and the top of all 30 metres of my 2.7m high hawthorn hedge – job done.
The build quality is excellent and the interchangeability of the extension piece is properly engineered and simple to do.

I have had chance to use the Ryobi hedge trimmer a number of times on my beech and Leylandi hedges. As other reviews have commented it is quite heavy particularly if you are using it for some time fully extended but it does allow you to trim the hedges without the the problem of batteries running out of power, and does give quite along reach for dealing with high hedges. The only problem I have experienced is that trimmer will deal with young growth but when I encountered thicker tougher branch which caused the blades to jam, the trimmer stopped and on investigation the fuse had blown in the plug, but after replacing the fuse the trimmer worked normally again.

  74. Anonymous says:

     United Kingdom

Good pole trimmer, useful for high and wide hedging. OK, it is a bit unwieldy at times but it does provide a high cutting edge. Minor grumbles, the blade could do with being longer, especially for wide hedging (save you going round the other side) and the trigger should be able to lock onto the “on” position. Overall, its an extremely useful trimmer and I would buy it again.

  75. Anonymous says:

Appears to be very well made – looks tough enough for the job. The extension tube can be a little fiddly to fit but once connected is good and solid. I tried it out a few days after it arrived and it cut my beech hedge really well, slicing through 10mm branches with ease but struggling a bit with those approaching 20mm diameter (as you would expect). As others have said its pretty heavy, ok when the blade is vertical but starts to pull on your arm as you swing it around. But that’s Physics for you! Its 2kg lighter than the 1000w Bosch model! Its much quicker than using a small trimmer off a ladder (and safer) which is why I bought it. Also saves money on going to the Gym by giving your arms and upper body a good workout so all in all a great buy!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersHaving originally ordered this item from an Amazon market place company called Scuff Pro (beware) and not received it, Amazon were very quick to refund my money via a voucher so that I could re-order from Amazon which I did. They must be congratulated in the way they dealt with this and I received my hedge trimmer within a few days.

The hedge trimmer is well constructed and reasonably easy to assemble although the harness is difficult to understand and fit. I found it to be badly designed and too awkward and so ordered the Silverline Shoulder Harness instead and it works perfectly. As other users have emphasised the trimmer is very heavy when extended so beware anyone with back or groin problems. I am 72 years old and managed to trim 2 x 3mtr high conifers with a mandatory 20 minute tea break in between. However it did a good job and I an satisfied with the result. It cut through the branches like butter! Overall I am happy with it and although the extension assembles more easily than it takes apart, once you have some technique it is well worth the effort.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI wish I hade bought one a long time ago. Ryobi have got this one right.

Fits together easily, it took me about 1 minute to be ready to use. The motor is more than powerful enough and went through 1cm old growth without even changing motor tone, as soon as you hear it running you know it means business. My old, short clipper would probably have stalled on 1 cm branches and I would have spent a couple of minutes trying to free it each time. The trigger is easy to use and well positioned. Comes with a second extension pole which I didn’t need. It looks, feels and sounds very well made.

It is on the heavy side and you need to pace yourself, but after cutting about 40 metres of 3 metre high leylandii, including the tops, I was a lot less tired and aching than if I had used my old machine. I also completed the job in about a 3rd of the time it usually took. I didn’t use the shoulder strap. For the sides I rested the handle against my stomach and did long curving sweeps (according to the manual you can buy a separate support strap to rest against your stomach). Just too easy once you get into the swing of it. No more trying to hold a clipper above my head and having the clippings fall all over me for 40 metres.

For the tops I still had to go up a step ladder (with someone holding the ladder for me)., some of my hedge is up to 2 metres wide so using the angle feature doesn’t do it all. Holding the clipper horizontally out in front of you takes some effort, but I found that I could rest the clipper on the hedge and simply use strength for the side sweeping movement. with the long reach (even without the extension pole) I found I could get right to the far edge of the wide bits, (with the old one I would have to force myself into the side of the hedge and almost crawl over it, really painful). With the Ryobi I could cut an almost 3 metre swathe across the top so insteady of moving the ladder one metre at a time as with the old clipper I could do it in 2.5 metre bites.

So, a 3rd of the time, less than half as achy, not covered in leylandii clippings and dust – Why did I struggle for so long with my old clipper?

I needed to develop a new technique for the sides because the Ryobi blade is a little shorter and the machine considerable more powerful than my old one, so it’s easy to get carried away and cut a big dent into the hedge. Once that is understood its a lot easier to get a flatter side with the long sweeps and because you are at a distance from the cutting its easier to see what’s happening flatnesws wise.

I would have preferred a bright coloured power cable rather than the black and perhaps a few metres longer – the only improvement I can suggest.

I bought a Ryobi schredder a few years ago and am equally impressed with the quality of that.

I used to buy everything Bosch, but I’ve been disappointed with their garden stuff quality recently. As its difficult to see how the 2 Ryobi items I have could be improved on and given that they cost a lot less than the Bosch equivelents I’m now a Ryobi convert with flymo stuff a close second.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is a great product at a reasonable price. It looks good and is very easy to use. Please note though that it is very heavy when fully extended. I have a 3 metre tall hedge and need to stand on a tall ladder to trim the top. This kit did the job perfectly but it takes a bit of effort. To be fair, the hedge is a good 2 metres wide so I have to stretch and hold my arms in a way that means they are fully extended in front of me. After approx 20-25 minutes I had to take a rest. I am a muscular 6 foot 3 inches and 220 lbs and even I found it hard. However, if you don’t have to use it fully extended (arms extended as well) then I am sure it would be okay. It really is a good and easy tool to use and I would definitely recommend it.

It does the job fairly well but as some have said, it is quite heavy especially since the weight is near the far end. I wouldn’t want to have to use it in a horizontal position for too long. I like the way you can add or remove the additional extension. When in short ‘mode’ it is easier to use and still has a long reach. I also like the fact the once started, you only need to hold one trigger to keep it going.

The poles are quite a tight fit which ensures there is no play in the system but it can be a little bit difficult to put together and take apart. Just make sure everything is in line before you try.

I wouldn’t use this as my only trimmer but for those difficult to reach jobs it’s a useful tool.

Easy to assemble and use vertically but quite heavy to use at full extension horizontally.Cuts stems as described.

Golden Review Award: 19 From Our UsersIt’s a superb trimmer and cuts and trims well, no complaints there. However, I was a little bit disappointed when I realised it could not be shortened to the similar length of a hand held trimmer. I guess I didn’t view the product carefully enough but at its shortest its still fairly long reach trimmer and heavy.

Then add the additional pole for some brilliant long reach trimming but beware, if you have a bad back like I have this thing it ultra heavy. Yes it comes with a support sling for use at both lengths but you can’t always keep the weight of the trimmer supported by the sling. Depending on what and where you are cutting there will be lots of times when you will have to support this beast with both arms! Boy it’s heavy!

After 20 minutes of cutting a 1 M high laurel hedge then a 2.5M high laurel hedge I’m tired!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersMy husband found this quite easy to use, he is almost 80yrs. He was able to reach approx 10/11 feet. It was not too heavy and had a good shoulder strap.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWorks really well for mixed hedge (hawthorne, blackthorn, beech, holly, etc). Very easy to add the extension pole. Not too heavy to handle if used with the harness.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersArrived promptly and product far exceeded expectation. Robust and does what I expected and more. Goes through fairly thick stems and decent power.

Safety switch is irritating, top heavy as you may expect. But very good at its job

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersThis is an amazing piece of kit, albeit very heavy. Did my tall hedges in a fraction of the time it used to take me. No more balancing on ladders!
