Great value for money. Slight problem during assembly as depth sleeve was missing, but did not stop it working perfectly. Good solid build, definitely worth considering.

Personally I can’t get very excited about a Bench Drill Press but I bought it as a birthday gift for my husband and he really likes it.
    It was very heavy.

This drill press is not easy to put together as the instructions are in font size 2 and I needed a magnifying glass to read them. As is usual these days the instructions rely on graphics to show how to assemble. In my case there were parts missing and I contacted the manufacturer but only received an acknowledgement email. The parts missing were on the depth gauge. However on a plus note it does work and seems fine at the moment, no problem with noise or accuracacy.

Powered from 13amp socket. I will use only for lighter work, mainly drilling wood occasionally thin metal.
I’ve not used it much since installed but looking forward to my next project.
There are a couple of points that need clarifying:-
    1) I can’t figure out how the red plastic pointer attaches to the depth stop screw on the left hand side?
    2) In the Manual there is no mention on how to adjust the Belt Tension?
    3) The silly short M6 screw to open the Pulley Cover will be so easily lost when removing to change the belt. The first thing I did was replace it with a longer one with a wing nut on. So it can be removed by hand rather than the original with a screwdriver!
    4) I purchased the Silverline Drill Vice at the same time. When I did a trial use of the vice the slotted holes do not line up with the slotted holes on the Drill Table so that I can bolt it to secure it! Why didn’t they make it to so both slots line up?

    Great tool for lighter work

Update: the seller was quick to respond and even quicker to act, the drill was returned and a replacement delivered at no additional cost to myself (within a week). Very impressed!

Original: The base is not as heavy as I was expecting and I will definitely be securing it to the workbench for safety.
The drill was well packaged and oiled but still did not arrive in good condition, the base paintwork is damaged and the metal work rusty in a number of places.
The largest issue is that the platform arrived with a number of cracks which ran clean through the frame and will likely make the drill unusable.
I have contact the seller in the hopes that the platform can be replaced.

    Initial fault quickly corrected

I am pretty pleased with this drill press. There was one element of the assembly that was puzzling because of the terminology but a Google search cleared it up. I am happy with my purchase.

Very easy to assemble although instructions not that great. 1. Put pole onto base and secure with bolts supllied. 2. Attach the adjustable shelf. 3. Puf in motor and head bit. 4 attach levers. 5 attach chuck.. you need to to lower the drill bit and twist on… 6. the you add the drill guaurd bit. Thats pretty much it… nothing hard about it. Wotks well but only for DIY or small workshop like mine. Been wantingvto get one of these for ages. Good buy

As a pillar drill it is and has worked without any problem. If there is one aspect that needs sorting and that is the safety guard they always break at the collar where it mounts to the drill I have had three and all broke in the same place.

drill is as expected for this price, was disappointed to see that box had previously been opened, all parts there, but when assembled wouldn’t run due to end of plastic lid safety switch broken. Decided not to have the hassle of returning it for this and repaired switch and runs ok.

Up until now I have managed to drill by hand accurately enough. However, for the first time an error in positioning of 1 mm from one side of a 34mm block to another was too much.

As other reviewers have commented, there is play in the alignment – this appears to come from the mechanism for lowering the drill, not from the chuck/drive bearings. But provided there is no sideways force then it drills as true as I could hope. Above two images are the result of drilling through a 34mm block of wood – it’s far better than I was managing by hand.

What doesn’t work is attempting to “move” a hole if you drill it wider. Because of the play the drill bit will naturally centre itself on the existing hole. It might be possible to make a piece that holds the descender relative to the pillar with less play but that’s going to take some experimenting to see whether it’s possible to make a suitable part.

For the money, a good purchase. It’s for lightweight work where extreme precision isn’t needed.

    Good for the price

It comes partly assembled, but it’s easy to put together. Speed is adjusted by moving the belts. Set on its slowest speed I think it will plod through most things. I wouldn’t want to drill things requiring high accuracy, but for most garage DIY jobs it’s more than good enough.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIts easy to give good reviews when things go well but more important when things do not go as planned. The current virus situation is causing problems for everyone. I contacted supplier when my drill was a week late I received a prompt and polite apology and an offer for a replacement or refund. I chose the replacement which duly arrived 3 days later.

The drill itself is well made and robust, heavy enough to avoid being knocked about and has a nice range of features such as the sliding guard and depth/angle gauges that you would normally associate with more expensive models.

The downside is the assembly plans which are dark and hard to read but to be honest the parts can only go one way so if you cant fit them without help then perhaps this is not the drill press for you for you. I am also yet to experience how ell the friction fit of the drill chuck to the drill shaft will last or grip on difficult materials and will update if this proved to be a problem.

Good value for money. Obviously not the same as far more expensive bench press drills, but drills small and medium holes quickly and neatly, smooth motor, and light stroke handles. Used with an alloy bench press drill vice, it does a decent job.

One of my better buys for my man cave. I now can drill holes more accurately and know the holes will be square to the work. Variable speed enables me to drill both small holes or bigger ones. Also it enables meto countersink steel brackets I may make. Not had that ability before. Definitely buy of the year for me.

  25. Brean Horne says:

Pros: No detectable wobble on chuck; able to drill 1.5mm hole. Aluminium pulleys.
Cons: Some play in top mounting of pillar, so true vertical not easy to achieve. Table not true to pillar, so absolute vertical drilling not guaranteed.. Chuck guard fragile. Some noise and vibration. Labels peeling.
Later: about 2mm run-out on main shaft!! Seems to be a bend above top bearing. There is similar wobble on pulley set; probable cause of vibration and noise. How could that get through quality inspection?

Assembly was quite straight forward and came complete with a mains adaptor for the 2 pin plug. All appears to be quite solid and is ideal for most DIY / garage workshop requirements. Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBought for small woodworking projects after reading reviews for other bench drills (also viewed some for this item on you tube). Product arrived much sooner than stated. Surprisingly so as it was the Christmas period. All packaging in tact, and all safe within.
Assembly was straight forward and instructions were clear. I did not experience any problems regarding damage to belt cover or broken safety switches as some others have reported. The safety switch worked as intended from the off with no modifications.
So far it is just clamped to bench until a permanent place is established, but runs very smooth and more quiet than expected. Only drilled test holes in timber so far, using conventional bits and flat bits, but very pleased with how easily the machine seemed to cope, and the degree of accuracy that was achieved. Although i am no expert, this seems to be a really good drill press for the money paid.
This should have been a Five star rating, only the three flat washers for mounting the column to the base were missing. I am sure that the manufacturer would have supplied these if i had contacted them but i had some suitable ones that i could use, and i was quite eager to play.

For 55 and free next day delivery, I can’t complain. The 3amp fuse in the mains plug blew after a short time and i replaced it with a 5A fuse. So maybe the manufacture to should uprate the fuse. It does seem under powered for large hole cutter in wood but I am happy overall with this drill and I ,n sure it will do many accurate small drilling jobs for me. Good produc

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersBought this because of the price, only a few quid more than one I was looking at in Screwfix but was more powerful. Couldn’t be happier; it’s very easy to set up; is the perfect size; can easily go through metals, woods, plastics, ceramics and masonry providing you have a decent drill bit; is easy to change the speed on and is accurate.
A few people have complained that it vibrates too much/ is noisy/ not accurate, but that just seems to me like they don’t know how to set up a pillar drill – works perfectly fine for me. It is a little noisy, but not more than you would expect, and maybe it isn’t built as well as some pillar drills out there (much more expensive pillar drills), but for the price it is very well made.

Have used Silverline before, many times, and have never been disappointed – I would recommend this drill to anyone.

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersThis is a fine tool, and has served me well so far.

I’ve used it to drill vertically through wood, plastic and even fairly thick stainless steel plates with no problems. (Obviously you need the correct bits, particularly for the stainless steel!)

The on and off switches seem sturdy enough. The on switch is recessed in comparison to the off switch, however both switches are quite hard to push. (I would have expected the off switch to be significantly easier to hit in an emergency). However it is perfectly adequate for normal use.

You will almost certainly want to purchase a vice to go with this drill. I thought I couldn’t go wrong with Silverline’s own 100mm quick-release vice Silverline 380956 Quick Release Drill Vice 100 mm , however this vice DOES NOT FIT because the holes on the mounting plate are not the right distance apart to fit on this drill’s table. I ended up buying a suitable vice from eBay based on the product picture which had a tape measure so I could see the vice would fit – but in case you want to check an existing or potential vice, the mounting holes on the drill table are 10.5cm centre-to-centre, or 4.25″. Unfortunately the same vice doesn’t seem to be available at Amazon to link.

Being able to change the gear of the motor without a complicated gear mechanism is a big plus, and this drill makes it simple – albeit a bit fiddly – to do. You have to open the top of the drill housing (which is held by a single screw), loosen the motor (a thumb-twist lock), move a plastic cable, then re-tighten the motor and re-attach the holding screw. (This very last stage may be unnecessary, but so far I’ve done it :-).

There is no reverse gear on this drill. I can’t imagine it’d be needed though.

My biggest complaint with this drill press has to be the safety visor. It was a pain to install, interferes with the drilling process (it touches and rubs on whatever you’re trying to drill into), and it snapped leaving razor-sharp edges within the first few uses of the drill. I’ve now removed the “safety” glass for fear of cutting myself on it. Unfortunately I can’t remove the whole visor because it holds the measuring rod in place. However at this price point I expect it to be a little rough around the edges, and I have much stronger safety goggles and other protective equipment in any case, so for me this was not a problem.

All in all, it seems a sturdy machine, let down only by safety risks (the difficulty in pressing the off button in an emergency and the so-called “safety” glass which actually makes it more dangerous). I’ve chosen to drop a star for these faults.

I bought this drill for my Dad who is a woodworker.I must admit he was a bit sceptical regarding the price for a machine like this. However he is delighted with it and the service too, ordered Thursday, delivered on Saturday. Took it out the box and was set up and running in less than an hour with no problems and the safety switch was no trouble either. He has already drilled numerous holes up to 50mm in wood, hard and soft, with no trouble. Spindle runs true. My Dad noticed some folks have been complaining that the drills were wobbling while drilling and this could be due to using only one hole to tighten the chuck. Tighten the chuck using all three holes should cure it, that’s why there’s three holes in the chuck.Don’t buy cheap drill bits as they are sometimes not quite straight All in all a fine piece of kit.May not be, to an engineer, but for woodworking it’s ideal. If you are a woodworker and need a drill which won’t break the bank go for it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this drill to be able to drill holes accurately so I was a bit concerned when I noticed a review saying the chuck wobbles and doesn’t run true! I’ve found that in fact, it’s quite likely to be your drill bits wobbling as they are definitely NOT all created equal.

I tightened a drill bit in the chuck and switched on for a test drill and found the silver line drill in fact runs arrow straight- with my Bosch drill bits, I switched to another size which happened to be one from b&q and noticed the tip of the drill bit wobbling all over the place! This effect is repeatable as I’ve broken a few of my original Bosch bits and all the replacements, again from b&q all wobble, whilst all the original ones run true. You can’t tell until you try them either as to look at they’re ok. My tip therefore would be to buy branded drill bits if you want accuracy and avoid the actually rather expensive but low quality b&q bits!

The silver line pillar drill is really very good for the money. I was lucky not to have any major transit damage but mine did have the common broken switch tab in the pulley lid. This is tricky to glue as it’s an oily polypropylene type plastic. The easiest way to fix the problem is to unscrew the switch and wrap electrical tape round the casing to hold the switch down. Then screw back in place.

That’s the only reason I deduct one star from my rating. It really is a very good value tool otherwise.

Golden Review Award: 67 From Our UsersI was told by a wise old machinist that the most important thing about a drill press is that there is almost no lateral movement in the chuck, because if there is, it wont drill straight holes. I was concerned that this ‘value’ item would not have been built well enough, but certainly My version of this has no play, and for that reason alone I would say this is a good drill and, given the price, I think it deserves five stars… I was also told by the same machinist to always use ‘centre drills’ to start the hole, and when I need an accurate hole this is what I do. Interestingly if you look around on the internet you can find this drill with at least three different manufacturers names on it. Most cost more than the Silverline – because you pay for the brand. Mine is a Silverline! I have had it for about six months and when accurate drilling is required – I use a centre drill, sharp drill bits, and hold the work piece firmly – and i have found I can drill very accurate holes in steel, brass, copper and aluminium. I agree with other reviews about noise, vibration and hassle of changing speed – and I would also add that the depth ‘stop’ is just two nuts on a threaded bar that tend to loosen themselves off.. which is a tad annoying- but I would have had to pay three to four times the price to see a significant jump in quality.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe reviews I looked at were mixed but I decided to try this drill and if it didn’t come up to scratch I knew I could return it. The package arrived looking a little worse for wear but despite this the drill itself was in pristine condition. The instructions, such as they were, didn’t help much but I assembled it without problem in a few minutes. Yes, there was some protective grease to remove, but nothing too much and it was there for a purpose. It looked the business so I fired it up and it ran perfectly. Yes, there was a little bit of vibration but nothing untoward and even this vanished as I lowered the drill bit into a bit of test wood.

Next step was to adjust the speed so I unscrewed the cover and when I opened it up something flew out onto the floor. Fortunately I spotted it bounce and was able to pick up a nut. I suspect it came from the clip onto which the retaining screw attaches but I couldn’t see a way of fixing it. Fortunately it doesn’t seem to be needed and the top screws back on quite happily and the drill continues to work. Time will tell if I’ve missed something.

So for the price this is an excellent bit of kit and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersAs commented elsewhere, and whilst I could be wrong, this machine looks to be a generic build badged and sold under a number of different company banners. It assembles easily and all the bits were in the box together with adequate instructions so that an average DIY’er will be up and running in less than ten minutes. I wouldn’t call the result flimsy but it is quite basic seemingly on the principle that if functions it’s fine, there’s no finesse on any of the parts but everything does it’s job if the user knows what they’re doing. If the depth gauge breaks (which it might well do with careless handling) then one can either get out the superglue or find another way (I usually wrap a rubber band around the actual drill at the right level to give a specific depth but I am obviously a sucker for doing things the hard way). The point is that most if not all the support functions (ie depth gauge, angle indicators etc) are just about adequate but probably with a limited lifespan. The core function, spinning a chuck round accurately at varying speeds, is pretty solid and certainly worth the price; it’s just that the user might need to use their initiative and experience if and when bits fall off. I bought a Silverline drill vice at the same time and it is annoying that the two aren’t made for each other and a bit of ingenuity is needed with the (not supplied) bolting together arrangements; not ideal. The final point I’d make is about the guarantee (not sure why some reviewers didn’t claim under the guarantee when the things they experienced happened) which is a healthy three years. Unless used by a professional three years would cover the average DIY’er very well indeed and on such a cheap machine is a good sales feature. I don’t know how easy it would be to actually claim but the Silverline web-site looks like it has good access to any service needed. The only confusing thing (to me at least, must be my age) is that the back cover of the instruction manual says that it has a three year guarantee in the top left corner but, on the bottom right, is “Guaranteed Forever” in several languages, which is the usual Silverline guarantee for some other none power tools. Overall a good value item for occasional amateur DIY use but might prove difficult to live with if used and abused by more demanding (and heavy handed) tradesme

Its a cheap generic drill press – exactly the same model seems to be sold by about 15 different suppliers, each in their own colour and with widely varying prices, but with no other perceptible differences between them. But, I wanted to do some reasonably accurate drilling of metals and it does that well. Wish I hadn’t wasted so much time and material trying to do the job by hand in the past.

It all feels a bit rough, so setting up takes a bit longer than it would with a 3000 drill press, but hey, its 55 and its for amateurs, so can’t complain about taking a bit of extra time.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI found this a great product. Once set up properly (with a good tension on the belt – notice the handle next to the motor to tighten this) it would a treat. It is quiet, accurate and solid. For the price it is fantastic.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have just assembled and tested my new drill. Assembly is easy as long as you clean all the rust preventer grease off, I used White Spirit and a rag. Bolting down to the bench reduces the vibration, which is not too bad anyway. I adjusted the speed down to 900rpm to give a cleaner drill with no tearing in wood. This should be fine for nearly all my jobs. Fitting the chuck which is commented on in other reviews is easy if you make sure the tapers are clean, the chuck is an interference fit so a tap with a mallet locks it in place. The drill is now on my bench and looks the part.

Golden Review Award: 104 From Our UsersI bought this pillar drill for my small woodworking projects and for that purpose it seems to be a great choice. In other reviews people were complaining for dented or smashed belt covers, broken safety and power switches. I did not find any of these in my drill. Seems like I’m lucky or the quality control of Silverline tools has improved. However, there is a few things that could be manufactured better, but after a day of testing I’m quite happy with this tool anyway. First of all, I had a lot of cleaning off the grease which was protecting parts from rust. After that assembly was quite straight forward. It is very important to carefully clean the inside of chuck, as it is fitted via a tapered shaft, and there cannot be any grease on any of them parts. What I was surprised with is that the pillar itself is just a machined, hollow shaft. I always thought it should be solid piece of steel but quick check in google and it seems like a hollow shaft is a common thing with most of the manufacturers. Even for bigger pillar drills. It looks a bit flimsy but does the job. Next are the belt pulleys. These are made of cheap plastic and are not quite true thus creating a bit of vibrations and noise. It’s not bad on low speed settings but it’s quite noisy and shaky on highest. I was hoping for machined aluminium pulleys but it seems like it’s not in this price range. There is also a little of a rattling noise when operaging a lever but it works smooth anyway. Depth stop is nothing special and I will have to work on that. Good thing is that the chuck runs quite true. I was able to quite precisely drill 1,2mm holes. I managed to fit even a 0,3mm drill into the chuck but wobbling was bit to much. I’m going to use bigger drills mostly but it’s not bad for a cheap drill press… and I mean it. It is cheap and it is cheaply built. Quality is faaaaar from it but it works and does the job right so for this price I can’t really complain. I didn’t drill any steel nor aluminium with it so can’t say much about it’s performance with this materials. It does great with wood however and I think it is a good entry level drill press for light woodworking jobs.

Had some reservations about buying the cheapest pillar drill I could find, but I’ve really only managed to find a couple of minor problems with this, which is amazing given the price.

Some of the other reviewers had issues, so I’ll address these:

Noise: I bolted mine down securely to my workbench and it’s actually quieter than my Father’s pillar drill, and his cost 3 times as much.

2-pin plug: This seems to be a common thing to Silverline products, and they now come with a pretty sturdy adaptor. Even if it didn’t it’s not exactly rocket science to fit a UK 3-pin plug.

Broken safety switch: No issues with this on my drill, though looking at it it does look a tab flimsy.

In fact, for the money this is a really nice bit of kit. The chuck runs true, the stand is sturdy, and the action is really solid.

The only issues I’ve really had are that the belt seems a bit prone to slipping if you apply too much pressure to whatever you’re drilling, and the plastic guard gets in the way but is a part of the depth gauge so can’t really be removed. Still, these are minor gripes, and for 60 you really cannot go wrong!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersExtremely impressed with drill. Excellent value. Although changing speeds takes a minute or so, it is a very simple operation and has been in use on pillar drills since I was in school (about 47 years ago ). I cannot think of one negative point. Will certainly watch for Silverline tools in future!

Golden Review Award: 25 From Our UsersFor the money this is an excellent product. Not the best drill in the world but does the job. I think you would be hard pushed to drill over 12 Dia in steel with this drill. For general work it is okay. The fastening of the drill head onto the column by two grub screws is somewhat of a joke. Other than that, for 48 delivered you can’t complain. Silverline Drill Press 350W

Golden Review Award: 30 From Our UsersI was pleasantly surprised at the quality of this product considering it’s price.
Came well packed and like most machine tools coated with a sticky presevative.
Easy to assemble but of course one must remember the old adage “you get what you pay for”.
