Mes oreilles me remercient.

I’ve been using the AfterShokz OpenComm with microphone boom for work the past three months. I bought them to replace an almost identical pair of AfterShokz Aeropex headphones because I was told the microphone on the Aeropex sounded terrible on the other end. Also, I’m preparing to go back to the office and wanted something with noise cancelling on the mic.

The OpenComm paired via Bluetooth with my HP Laptop just fine, but took a little fiddling with the audio settings to get them fully recognized at first. Once I got it, I haven’t had to mess with the laptop settings again.

The thing I like most about these is how lightweight they are, and how I can still wear my eyeglasses without interference. With regular headphones they would press my ears into my glasses and make me sore after awhile, but these I can wear for hours with no issues.

There are some issues with MS Teams: the volume buttons on the headset only tell me battery charging. If I want to raise or lower the volume I have to do it from within Teams. I can’t mute or end a call from the headset either; only from within Teams. I can live with that. The volume controls do work with WebEx (most of the time).

Also, the “test call” from within Teams doesn’t work anymore. It fails to start the call until I hang up –and then it starts ringing as though it’s a new call, but there is no way to answer it. I did not have this issue with the Aeropex. I’ve also had the phantom call happen after disconnecting, but only twice in three months.

One issue that both the OpenComm and Aeropex have is the occasional mute tone sounding every few seconds after startup. I usually leave the headset powered off and connect it just before a meeting. Sometimes it will start beeping every few seconds right after I connect. The only way I’ve found to fix this is to power off the headset then back on again. Usually when doing this I’ll hear the voice say “MuteOff” and then it will reconnect fine with no more beeping.

I haven’t had them powered on for an entire work day yet, but I think they would probably last the whole day. I’ve used them for several hours’ worth of back-to-back Teams video meetings and never brought them down below “Battery Medium”.

The magnetic charger works slick and the headset charges fast. I’ve fully recovered them to the blue LED in under half an hour after using them heavily. The AfterShokz website says it’s one hour from 0 to 100.

The mic noise cancelling seems to work too. I type fast and loud, and I asked someone on the other end of a meeting if they could hear me typing my notes and they said no. Then we tested it right then and they still said no.

So overall, they were exactly what I was looking for: all the benefits of the Aeropex plus a noise-cancelling boom mic.

I bought this through Amazon because when I discover a gadget that doesn’t live up to its promises, I can return it for a full refund.
These headsets way exceed my expectations. Sure, they’re not Bose headset quality sound for music, but they are more than adequate for listening to anything. I even use them to play games, as the stereo is all present, and they have the advantage of also letting me hear the world around me.
The microphone works nicely, appears to have excellent noise cancellation so I can use them in noisy environments, and they are extremely light and comfortable.
The manual (or lack-thereof) needs addressing, as unless you find an obscure web posting you can’t find how to make it multi-point BlueTooth (work with two devices at the same time), but I now use it with my mobile and my PC together.
Overall, these turn out to be the best portable headset I own, and I have lots of top-end earbuds and headphones.

Well, I’ve used them for a day now, and battery life seems to be very good. I have hearing loss and have found that. However, they are very comfortable, and I can hear well with the aftershock headset. I have set up the headset to work. With Dragon Speaking and I would say that the microphone is showing not as well as I was hoping it might be that it is farther from the mouth then than the full headset I used before, or it could be. Bluetooth over a direct connect not quite sure.

Second-week usage, the device is still super comfortable to wear all day, battery life is still excellent, and I get a full day’s work out of the device on an overnight charge.

They don’t cover your ears so outside noise gets in. I bought them for this reason so it works for me. I dont like the safety aspect of not being able to hear. I also don’t like the sweaty feeling I get from my ears covered or plugged so these are great for that. The sound quality for music is alright but fine for calls. They could be louder but its not to bad. Mic is decent as well.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI bought these to replace my Trekz. Since cutting the cord the only phone I have at home is my iPhone. My previous Aftershokz were OK, however not good during some calls. The boom mic on the OpenCom makes using them much much better. The voice quality is vastly improved and people can hear me much more clearly. I no longer sound like I am speaking from the bottom of a barrel which was the issue with the Trekz. Having the mic around the sound transducers is not as effective as having the boom mic.

The sound quality is improved as well. These are my fourth Aftershokz headset. I jumped in at the beginning with their wired version. On a side note, it would still be mice if those were available. I miss using them in theatres, because I could connect them to the audio description devices and I like connecting them to my work laptop. Bluetooth connectivity is disabled by our IT department. For audiophiles these are not the way to go, however for making telephone calls, using them outside with turn-by-turn GPS apps, watching streaming programs, listening to music during workouts and cycling they are fantastic. The cost is steep, but no other bone conduction headset comes close.

It would be nice if they assign a number or word to each equalizer setting. Because the changes are subtle it is not helpful when the feedback only says “equalizer changed”. It would be nice if it said “equalizer set to option 1 …” or “rock, flat, enhanced, …”.

The multiple paring works well and is easy to set up. There is an issue with paring it to both an iPhone and Apple Watch. The watch keeps disconnecting and connecting. I don’t know if this is an issue caused by Aftershokz or by having two Apple devices connected together via Bluetooth. I suspect it is an issue for Apple to resolve.

I do not use “Hey Siri”. I press and hold the multiple function button to activate Siri. OpenCom doesn’t broadcast the first tones letting you know Siri is listening. Also when dictating it is necessary to wait an additional second or the first word or two will be missed.

The transducer pads are smaller then the other Aftershokz with built-in mics. They are very comfortable and I wear them all day. Very pleased with the purchase and hopefully the price will become more economical down the road. I would love to buy them as gifts for the family.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our Userseigentlich bin ich ein absoluter Muffel was Bewertungen abgeben angeht.

Absolutely love these, working from home they are a must and I really love how discreet they are. I lift the microphone bar and you can’t see I have them on. Really Comfortable.
I use in the car, In fact I pretty much don’t take them off in working hours.
I really did not want to spend this much, the budget was half the cost of these! They don’t have all the features other head sets have at this price, but I’m glad I took my time to search and read reviews. For comfort, simplicity and call quality, pricey but worth it.

This is my second AfterShokz product; I bought this to up my online training game . The sound was surprisingly clear and the mic works great. The battery life really impressed me, I could use this for a full day’s class without charging or having it drop off on me. It is pricey, but a great product.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI’ve used AfterShokz in the past at my warehouse job. So I’m not a stranger to this technology. It has definitely improved over the course of half a decade. That said, I’m going to review this coming from a professional driver and also again the ever popular Blue Parrot B450 (Version 2). I’m going to review this pair against Beats Studio Wireless and also just using a normal Phone (Apple XS Max)

Testing: I called my landline phone, it saves voice calls as .wav files. I downloaded them on my computer and used 800 HD S to compare the quality. So I’m pretty confident in the comparison being real-world.

To save you time: Yes, I would recommend this over the Blue Parrot.

    Volume Control: Plus or Minus.
    Voice Controls: Works
App Integration: Battery Charge appears (Blue Parrot does not)
Sound Quality: Worse than Blue Parrot
Sound Volume: Worse than Blue Parrot
Battery Life: Worse than Blue Parrot. Still lasts Over 12 hours.

The sound is a defining factor with the Aftershokz. I would’ve loved to have seen an Active Noise leveling system where the sound would stay around the %. I find myself adjust the volume to suit the different environments while still being able to hear the music. I would say the sweet spot is the volume before the headset starts to massage your head. Bass is terrible. Highs and Mids are pretty good. The listening experience reminds me of a good pair of Sennheiser Headphones. Not a lot of Lows, but it’s ‘airy’. Otherwise I would say the experience is better than putting your phone on a table in front of you, and listening to the speakers. You still hear everything around you while the phone is playing.

Phone Call Quality: Better than the Blue Parrot. It sounds better than using my iPhone speaker, worse than putting the phone up to my head. Not by much. There’s a lack of lows in my voice and seem less natural.

Call Quality: Active Noise Cancellation: Better than Blue Parrot. Going 40 MPH with the front windows down I could still make out what I was saying. The Blue Parrot couldn’t keep up and I couldn’t hear any of what I was saying. Again, it’s worse than just using the normal phone as a hand set.

Comfort: If you wear glasses, like I do, it’s not the best comfort. But again everything that sits around our ears is like this. It’s difficult keeping that sweet spot just beside the Tragus. I find myself fiddling with them to readjust a lot. If you’ve got side burns, they will be a problem. It does hurt to wear around the ears.

Hats: I can wear hats. I can’t wear hats with the blue parrot.

Microphone: Is a bit stiff to adjust.

Here’s the bottom line and the main reason why I like these headphones:
It’s safer for me while I drive and work. I know it’s subjective but I find myself zoning out and it’s more difficult for me to judge the rest of the world around me. For example when going to a stop light, I’ll find myself feeling “out of control” of my car in that my braking is much harder.

I also find myself getting into the music, pod cast, or book.

  18. LeoraMcLerie says:

In general, very nice, ergonomic, high quality product. Works amazingly for long phone calls. However, it’s not an ideal replacement to a regular headphones because of poor quality of the sound (inadequate frequency response). So I have to switch often.

  19. NancyMoncrieff says:

I bought these so I could hear music while chatting on zoom calls with clients. They are excellent, you can hear crystal clear just like in ear or on ear headphones, people on the other end during calls cannot hear anything but your voice. I can’t comment on music quality as I only use these for voice calls.

Technically amazing, I loved it! So light, easy to use, I was amazed how good it sounded, and was hoping it could be something I could wear throughout the day.
But after just a few minutes they started to feel uncomfortable, and that progressed within 30mins to mild nausea. Checking reviews of these and other Bone Conductor headsets, some people are just affected that way. Sad I couldn’t adjust to using them, as really they are a technical marvel!

I bought this because I wanted a lightweight, cordless, behind the head, headset for my all day Teams meetings. I was a little nervous about the bone conduction technology but I have to say I’m now a huge fan. I love having my ears free, which lets me wear this all day without having to take it off for conversations with my family when I’m working from home.
It’s very lightweight. Sound quality is great for Teams calls. Battery is excellent.
Downside: the Teams integration isn’t great – I have to use the Teams config settings to adjust the volume (even the windows volume slider doesn’t work), and the mute buttons on the headset don’t work with Teams. They need to fix that quickly, it’s irritating.
Also, the ear hooks gets very sore on the back of my ears after several hours some days. Hopefully I’ll get used to it – it’s only been a week. It’s not a deal breaker.
    But overall, a good product.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersOriginal review below…
    Update 2 – Dec 2021 – Teams problems solved!
…and then it was all ok again. The amazingly horrible double-beep problem has been solved – I suspect by a further update to Teams that reverted the integration with the OpenComm back to how it had been before it was changed.

Original review now stands again: this is an awesome headset that I truly love using. I’m just terrified that it and Microsoft will argue again and it will all go horrible. Support from OpenComm was a bit rubbish TBH as they just said “that’s how it is” and there was no way to fix it, so I’ve marked this as 4 stars not 5 as I had it originally. AfterShokz – if you’re reading this you need to figure out how to do firmware updates on this product as it’s quite pricey, and you’d have a route to solving this kind of problem not just hoping MIcrosoft will solve it for you by backing out the change they made.

    Update 1 – Oct 2021 – it’s all gone wrong with Teams!
Suddenly in Oct 2021, Microsoft updated Teams – and “improved” the integration with my OpenComm and it went from hero amazing product to utter disaster in one day. I’m heartbroken… I use Teams all day every day and my OpenComm was awesome. Was. Then the update: and now, I hit mute on Teams, my OpenComm announces in my ear “mute on” and then beeps twice in quick succession every ten seconds very loudly. It’s VERY VERY VERY ANNOYING. And distracting. And gets in the way. And means I basically can’t join a meeting and mute myself until it’s my turn to speak as I can’t focus on the meeting because of the beeping.

Reached out to AfterShokz and they blamed Microsoft – but it’s their product feature, not Teams. And they don’t do firmware updates.

So – this was a great headset. The best. Now it’s awful and I’m looking for an alternative. So sad.

    — Original review – heaping praise and love cos it’s a great headset.
The endless Teams meetings… Having returned to the office, but still on many Teams meetings a day I was looking for a headset to replace the fancy mic-earpiece set up I had at home for the last 18 months. Didn’t want closed in ears as they just get uncomfortable and hot over the day, and you can’t hear your environment – so people at the other end of the office wearing closed-in ear pieces are shouting at their laptop. So I went for this – and what a revelation! It’s bone-conductive, so it sits against your temples rather than over your ears – so you can hear yourself and your environment clearly allowing you to modulate your voice volume to a natural level rather than yelling to hear yourself or having that “dead” earpiece when you’re talking. Sound quality is excellent – it’s not quite as good as in-ear headphones, but that’s not what these are for. My voice is crystal clear as these have a subtle mic boom and excellent noise cancelling. Bluetooth and last for hours and hours on a single charge (never run out on me yet), and weighs nothing – incredibly comfortable and just sits on my head and I forget they’re there. Work well with glasses too – they don’t get in the way of each other.

These also come in a neat box that protects them when I shove them in the laptop bag, and with a charging lead. If I had any negatives, it’s that the charging lead is non-standard – USB at the end you plug into the charger and then a proprietary magnetic connection at the other end. It’s neat, but I’m terrified of losing/breaking it as it’s ten quid to replace. Other than that, these are the absolute business and I love ’em!

Brilliant - even with Teams (again)

I previously had the aftershoks air which is why i tried this.
i think there just arent that many consumer product competitors out there that fits what i was seeking. that is a wireless headset that is not overhead, that is both ears, and not in ear (bone conducting, or whatever buzzword you want to use. honestly i would call it face jiggling. if it were bone conducting i could bite it and hear the sound, but i cant)

    notable thoughts:
-hearing the ambient noise with a wireless headset is great
-i think it looks professional and doesnt smoosh your hair
-i like magnetic chargers. TINY peeve is this one cant be flipped either way
-it has much less heat than an over ear headset.
-on warm days, i get sweaty and i can feel stickiness where the silicone presses on the side of my head. It is a mild nuisance that i am able to ignore.
-if you really wear it all day, i think you might get very mild soreness.
-high volumes gets rattle-y and tickles. i usually have to turn it down so it doesnt rattle, but maybe you like that artificial asmr lol.
-button controls unintuitive. i haven’t spent the time to memorize the controls
-the sensitivity of the mic seems well tuned for calls. It picks up my voice well, and anything not next to my face it seems to be able to filter it out.
like i think i am able to forget to mute myself and go to the bathroom and pee and nobody will hear. (don’t quote me lol)
-the audio quality. well i dont know if it is just my pc, but when connected via bluetooth, it shows up as 2 audio outputs. headset and headphone. both are pretty low bit rate. “headset” seems reserved for phonecalls and bitrate is super low, like old telephone quality, it works for video chat, but playing music sounds like super lossy garbage. The other output “headphone” the quality itself is barely passable, the only problem is for some reason the audio is choppy like connection issue or driver version issue, i have no idea the real reason. either way i just use actual speakers and then set the in call device setting to the headset. and just disable the “headphone” output
-audio quality on android bluetooth is far better. obligatory: it isnt 150 buck audiophile headset quality, but i am generally picky with audio quality, and the quality is very acceptable. It is really too bad it is a pain to switch connecting bluetooth to different devices.
-i think it doesn’t auto shut off when i turn my computer off. i definitely have to remember to turn it off and plug it in at the end of the day or it will be dead the next day, otherwise it definitely seems to last the whole work day.

    Meine Teilnehmer hren mich einwandfrei.

Having read reviews I wasn’t expecting a lot from the sound quality – which is not so important for phone/zoom calls so I went ahead with the purchase. Having used them the sound quality is actually pretty good. Whilst not Bose or Sennheiser quality i’m happy to use them to listen to music and with the open ear design I don’t miss out on what’s happening around me.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI don’t regret buying these. They’re great for video calls. The noise cancelling in the *microphone* is hands down the best I’ve ever tried. And I’ve tried a lot.

They’ve improved the quality of my life. My ears no longer hurt from having earbuds rammed into them. It’s allowed me to keep making daily video calls through the pandemic, without pain or ear infections.

The battery life is fantastic. The charging isn’t as quick as some, but will do hours off a five minute charge.

The downsides, they are far too big for my head. It doesn’t affect the use of them, but there’s are huge solid loop of titanium sticking out at the back of my head. It’s like having a cupboard handle back there.

This means they get caught on the hood of my jacket, the back of the sofa etc. all the time.

It can’t be adjusted up or down without moving the earpieces into the wrong position. I have wondered if they could be bent with heat like glasses at an optician since there are titanium. But I haven’t dared try. I don’t know if there are any conductive parts in the band I could break.

These are really not made with long hair in mind. There pretty awful to wear with your hair down. I can’t put my hair over them because the loop at the back sticks out so far. Then because my hair is under them, it’s hard to get them in position on my ears. Just that part of my hair sort of has to go over and it looks pretty silly.

When I take them off, I have to carefully unwind my hair from them. I rarely get them off without some part get wrapped around them.

It’s fine when my hair is up and out of the way.

The audio quality is fine. You can feel the vibrations in your face at higher volumes which is sometimes nice for music. The sound is very centred in your head in a way other headphones can’t do. It lacks low end frequencies though.

Sometimes, when making a call the person on the other end can hear their own voice which is disconcerting. I think maybe when background noise is very high, or dense and something about the normally excellent noise cancelling microphone is going a little wrong.

Sometimes your own voice will dip up and down in volume too on a call. It’s still understandable, but makes it tiring to listen to.

The pros do outweigh the cons, but I feel like they need to work on a new strap design for females with smaller heads and long hair.

I quite critical because I have used many Bluetooth headsets and they are all very flawed in many regards. But these are by far my favourite so far, despite their problems.

Had this for a while now for home working using Microsoft Teams and Amazon Chimes. Sound quality is really good considering it’s not covering your ears and noise cancellation is decent. I don’t have problems hearing people and they can hear me well too. The little vibrating, tingly feeling of the bone conduction can by disorientating the first time you use it, but it’s so comfortable to wear all day, no sweaty or aching ears, which is what I wanted. It’s a shame that the onboard controls on the headset don’t work with Teams or Chimes, so things like muting and volume changing can only be done at the computer. That’s pretty useless if you wander from your PC while muted and suddenly need to speak. It’s also a bit confusing that it’s recognised as “headphones” and “headset” with different settings and different apps can sometimes recognise one mode or the other. Mine also has this thing where later in the day, with no changes to settings I can’t hear them and they can’t hear me. Only a reboot fixes it. A colleague with the same headset doesn’t have the same problem, so I suspect it’s PC related.
It’s a little pricy and disappointing that you don’t get a spare charge cable for what you pay, but it’s worth it for the comfort factor alone.

So glad I tried these! At last I can attend multiple online meetings, give webinar seminars, and record lectures without ending the day with painful or squashed ears from buds or headphones. Was ich damit sagen will…?

I was a bit sceptical at how good this bone conduction technology actually was but after watching some reviews on Youtube I was confident to spend the money and order the headset. It arrived the next day which I often find amazing with Amazon at the speed of delivery to a country area.
The headset lived well beyond its expectations. I am amazed at how light it is and at the incredible sound quality despite not sitting on my ears. I have used a number of normal headphones that cover the ears and find after a while they become uncomfortable, they make your ears sweat and heat up and it is not always useful to cut out all surround sound. This headset is perfect for my use. I am either at Zoom meetings or watching youtubes or videos and some days have it on for hours. It seems to run for many hours between charging. Installing was a piece of cake. Absolutely love this product.

I started out with the Titanium, then the Air, then Areopex and I just found out about the Opencomm last week and ordered it.

I was irritated that the answer button on the Areopex was smaller but I lived with it. Now who the heck decided to move it to the right side of the head? Seriously, this is almost enough to return these. The more raised button ALMOST makes up for the smaller size but the right side is awful! It is for this reason I knocked a star off the review.

These things are on my head all day long as I am a Locksmith and often cannot easily answer a phone call with a lock in pieces in both hands. When I saw the Titanium on someone one day, it was a game changer for me. I can answer the phone with the back of my hand and keep working. I had tried many, MANY Bluetooth headsets and earsets over the years. I could not wear any of them for very long without getting a headache or earache. This design works great for me.

Music is noticeably better with this new version. If you have never used bone conducting headphones before, they do NOT sound as good as regular headphones. But I have high end cans I use at home for my music (Sennhesier HD-650 and Audio Technica AT-50x) so I am somewhat biased here. But I didn’t buy these for music.

The mic on the older versions picked up a lot of background noise and often made calls hard for the other end to understand me. So far this is perfect with the boom mic! My wife said she didn’t know I was on my headset. A huge improvement. Thank you!

My only real complaints are the small answer button on the right side and the proprietary charging cable (as the reviewer below stated, the 90’s called…). This was an issue when I was out of town for 4 days on business and forgot my cable. I could not find one anywhere other than online… And it was supposed to arrive the day I left.

    I still highly recommend these!

Though not so great for music, they are brilliant at voice and the microphone picks you up really well. Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersReceived the AfterShokz OpenComm on the day that Amazon predicted. I have now 10+ different headsets, ranging from what comes with the iPhone up to Stax Electrostatic Ear Speakers costing over $1,000. I had read and viewed many reviews of the OpenComm so I was expecting sub par sound quality and basically bought it to provide me with class leading phone hands free connection, without the irritation of in ear canal buds, so I can wear this all day.

Well, the sound quality exceeded my expectations! I would say it is comparable to a high quality FM radio and if you decide to plug your ears, then the base really comes up. I am not going to do that, but just saying. The voice frequencies are very good sounding, so 100% for phone and podcasts. Music is very reasonable for casual background listening, but for a “concert hall” experience, I would choose a Bose Q35, or better, which is to be expected.

Another benefit is that I can eat food without getting the annoying crunching sound in my ears that happens with regular ‘phones.

The microphone is 1st class, equal to my Plantronics top spec bluetooth device.

My only criticism is that the OpenComm came with only a SINGLE dedicated charging cable! For the amount of money they charge for this, I would really expect at least a spare, especially as it is only chargeable with it’s dedicated magnetic cable, so you better not loose it! I would suggest trying to buy a spare, just in case!

    UPDATE
I’ve lowered my rating from 5 to 4 stars. although I would like to give it 4.5, but is not available. Reasons, after a couple of days of use:
    – No indication on whether the unit is on or off could lead to unintentional discharge of battery
    – That single dedicated charging cable is bugging me. What happens if it gets lost or damaged!
    – Wearing the unit all day, produced a pressure point behind my left ear. This is just a niggle, but if the connecting band around the back of the head was angled lower to rest on your head, that would alleviate this.

On the +ve, the quality of the mic is exceptional, according to all my phone contacts that have heard it and the audio keeps amazing me.

I would definitely recommend this unit and would buy it again.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersThis was a purchase in a sea of confusion, alternating choices, buzzwords, advancing technology (it always does), and your wallet. My wallet was in better shape than normal, and yet – considering the ‘all in’ mentality here, I was expecting very little. Let me explain.

This purchase represents a combination of three things: business need (I’m on the phone, pacing, 4-8 hours a day, period; in the car, in a home office, walking outside – it all applies, yes, yes, yes). I’m a power talker, and I talk, listen, dial. In between, I do also like to listen to music.

But, I know what folks want – and it’s details you seek, details you shall receive. THE DEETS ON MUSIK!!!1!!

It is good. Really, really good. For a bone conduction system. Let’s review the non-sciencey-parts: (a) it’s not an ‘in ear’ headphone. This means, for all practical purposes, no physical part of this headphone system SITS IN YOUR EAR CANAL – defined: the part of the ear that looks like a hole going into your ear. Please use your logical scale of reasoning and understand that – ear canal, means many things to many people. In my case, it does not block sound like an ‘in ear’ headphone would – and thus, it simply prevents you from blocking the ear by placing the ‘sound apparatus’ outside the edge of the ear, forwards from the ear hole (canal), resting on the edge of the ear flap and close to the skull. The are not PLUGS, and don’t cover the ear canal – end of story.

And they sound GREAT considering what you’re dealing with here. You’ll get it once you consider:

    (a) how EXTREMELY light these units are – it’s like the first time I put on a good VR headset – the similar sensation that you don’t really feel it as the experience is so much more than the earphones – yet you really cannot feel these on your head even after 2 hours I was literally wondering where I’d put them – then I reached up and felt them on the back of my head;

    (b) how insanely long the battery lasts;

    (c) how fantastically well the audio microphone picks up the sound of your voice, your soundfield, and crisply and without great amounts of distortion transmits that to the call;

    (d) how much distance you literally can walk with these away from your phone (only tested, want to now test strong computer bluetooth chipset) before even noticing any distortion;

    (e) how well and expertly tuned the design is, including the switch layout (there are 3 [three] physical buttons) – and the forethought in the function and form of the buttons;

    (f) the solid and dependable build quality – these have been in my hand since I unwrapped them, and I’ve not thought about another pair for multiple use cases since then.

Did I mention – they’re water resistance is amazingly potent – and yet I haven’t even tested this? I can only imagine getting on my elliptical with a good conference call going and 45 minutes later, having NO issues with call quality as the physics of the sound game are NOT that affected by this use case. Fantastic!

    Would I – YES – recommend them?
Would I – YES – buy them again?
Would I – YES – but other AfterShockz products?

Please – run, DONT WALK, and buy a pair of these before you wish you had.

These hit the 3 tantric areas of audio capabilities: audio fidelity in both music and calling; multi-environment function; function AND form blending to create exceptional value.

Screw b3@ts. These beat the value of that crap line hands down.

Golden Review Award: 45 From Our UsersThis is my first experience with bone conduction, and I’m glad i took the plunge. I had some questions going into this that I think others may have, so in no particular order:

    1) They aren’t silent to others around you. In fact, they’re quite audible – akin to open back headphones or non-sealed IEMs like Yuin PK1s or original Apple earbuds. I think these are great when you’re alone or outdoors, but I wouldn’t use these in a shared office or in an airport lounge unless you keep the volume low to avoid disturbing others
    2) Very comfortable and plays nicely with glasses. Can easily wear these all day
    3) Mic quality is good for a Bluetooth headset, but beware you’re still limited in terms of audio bandwidth like any other Bluetooth headset. This means your voice will be understandable but phone-like, as opposed to wired USB headsets that can sound more natural
    4) Lip sync with video is acceptable. It doesn’t support low-lag protocols like AptX, and you can tell, but it’s better than most Bluetooth headphones and headsets I’ve tried
    5) As far as I can tell, it doesn’t support multi-device pairing, however it’s easy enough to re-sync with different devices
    6) Music quality is acceptable. In fact it was better than I was expecting, maybe approaching the aforementioned Yuin PK1s. This translates to: biased towards mid range, with minimal bass, but still clear and not muddy.

Overall, I like these. You can comfortably wear these for all-day conference calls without the sweaty, sore ears associated with traditional earbuds or headsets.

A great pair of headphones. The concept behind AfterShokz bone conduction is excellent – instead of sticking something in your ear or over your ear, leave your ears open to the elements and hear through bone conduction.
This means that you can still hear sounds around you. Personally, I find that shutting out sound is disorienting, so I use AfterShokz a lot (I have a running pair without the boom microphone, and this pair for use in the office) and i don’t feel disoriented. However some people may want to block out the world in order to immerse themselves in music, and the open feature of these headphones means that they don’t do this.

This product works well except that you cannot adjust the volume during a Teams call from the headset, you have to fumble around and find the device settings within the Teams call screen. For 150, and advertised as perfect for all-day office working, I would have expected the volume buttons on the headset to work for calls as well as listening to music when I’m not working. And it took three emails from the support team before they admitted to that. Be prepared to have your ears blasted if you have a loud-speaking colleague.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersUntil recently, I worked at home as a hell, er, helpdesk tech for a multinational bank. For that job, I used all my own equipment. My laptop would connect to the company’s Citrix environment for a workstation, and their phone system would call my cell phone so I could take calls. I’d tried a couple of different wired headsets, but no wireless headset had anywhere near the battery life needed to make it through a 9 hour shift. I’d lusted after the AfterShokz OpenComm, but couldn’t justify to myself the expense of it. I was finally able to afford it, thanks to the (unwilling) financial contributions of my poker buddies.

I should have gotten this MUCH sooner than I did. It is the *PERFECT* headset for that sort of job. The bone conduction isn’t a gimmick, it works and works very well. The noise-cancelling mic works great, only a few callers ever had trouble hearing or understanding me. When it’s not needed, the mic can be rotated out of your way. As others have noted, it’s adequate for listening to music, but it’s not my first choice for that. Bass is nearly nonexistant, but it IS useful if you want to hear some tunes in a noisy environment (such as those poker games which financed this purchase to begin with!)

Another segment of the population that should strongly consider this is folks who have hearing loss. My mother and uncle (who both wear hearing aids) each bought one of these after trying mine out. Mom says she now hears callers better than she did using her expensive ($2000+) Widex Bluetooth hearing aid!

I’m usually very cynical about marketing claims, and I was no different here with their claims about ’16 hours of talk time’. But I can say with certainty that they aren’t bullsh*t*ng you. I have yet to run this thing out of juice, even on hours-long conference calls or Teams/Skype/Zoom meetings. When it is time to recharge, the included USB cable with proprietary magnetic connector makes this a snap. When not in use, they thoughtfully include a carrying case. The open air design makes this very comfortable to wear all day if needed, and lets you hear callers or music without completely disconnecting from the world around you.

In conclusion, this headset isn’t for everyone. But for those who would find it useful, it’s like a gift from God.

Hail to the king. The best headset I've found, period.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersRealmente son otra tecnologa distinta.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our Users.. and WHAT a tin. This headset comes in a very fancy box with a very up-market carrying case. Even the instruction booklet gets its own little pouch. The product itself is very good although, for the price, it ****** well should be. I have tried cheap bone-conduction headphones and, although they worked quite well, the shape of my head meant that they had a tendency to slide into my ear – which rather defeats the point of the whole bone-conduction thing. And, anyway, if you don’t want to compromise on OUTGOING audio quality you are probably looking for something with a boom microphone. That means that you don’t have a great deal of choice. The proprietary magnetic plug on the charger is clever because it means that you won’t damage the headphones repeatedly plugging in a USB plug. The 10 price tag on an extra one of those does not seem to me to be as unreasonable as that of the headphones.

So, to summarize: They are good. They are overpriced. Having said that, they will probably sell like hot cakes for the poseur market. Anybody “in the know” will instantly know that you spent an arm and a leg on your headphones. At least, until decent knock-offs become available, that is.

Update: After using them solidly for two weeks, I can confirm that they are very good. The sound quality is a little “thin” but that is to be expected for bone conduction headphones and, anyway, the brain compensates for that very quickly. They are comfortable to wear for long periods. I still think that the price is outlandish, though.

These really were a game changer for me, working from home for the last year has meant a quick chat has now turned into a 30 minute meeting. I now spend most of the day on the phone at the moment. These are light weight and the battery seems to last all day. Because they are not in or over your ear you don’t get the same sweaty ears after a long meeting and I almost forget I’m wearing them, range is very good as well (able to make a cup of tea while in a meeting is fabulous multi tasking)

    Love these

Sound quality is excellent and the look is great, however, it doesn’t feel wholly natural the way it sits. All in all its not a bad set up, the price is probably hard to swallow for most and I’ve used other units at a fraction of the cost that are almost as good, but the sound quality and mic quality are probably worth paying that extra few quid for. It’s a high 3 stars pushing a 4

Having had a poor experience with the new jabra evolve2 design I was looking for a new headset that I could wear for several hours and not worry about batter life and had a microphone with noise isolation. One week in and I’m very impressed the sound quality is great and no ear fatigue and my voice comes through well and naturally.

I have this connected with phone and m1 mac mini and all works well.

A buddy of mine started off with bone conducting headphones attached to his cycling helmet. Interesting idea. Then he told me that he had bought a pair of aftershokz. I was very intrigued. I found out that the material used on most of the earbuds caused an allergic reaction on my skin so that meant that my 3+ other pairs of headphones weren’t usable anymore. I’ve been looking for alternatives since then. I tried the ticpods 2 and was somewhat underwhelmed by the inconsistent connection and battery life. When it worked, it worked well and I’ll keep using them at times. I also felt like they might fall out too easily. The aftershokz don’t have that concern. They’re very secure.

I decided to get the opencomm model for the microphone boom. That plan didn’t work out as well as I couldn’t get them to pair with my tabletop bluetooth phone transmitter but the rest of the headphones are pretty darn awesome.

Don’t expect them to sound as good as a pair of headphones with over the ear insulation. They won’t. But they sound really good for something that doesn’t actually touch the ear. It sits just in front of the ear and I marvel at how comfy they are. The band is stiff, most likely to keep some tension so the speakers stay touching your skin and stay in place. The only problem I have with the band is every so often I lean back in my chair or sofa and the band keeps me from laying my head back. But these babies are really comfortable. I forget they’re on and I’ve actually had them on for hours without playing anything. I forget they’re there.

I think this model would benefit from a dedicated mute button. On my plantronics headsets, it’s really handy to have 1 button mute control. I believe you have to hit both volume buttons to mute but I haven’t tested it yet.

Can’t say much about the noise cancelation. I haven’t tried it in a noisy environment.

I would definitely recommend this set of headphones. Everyone just needs to understand what they are getting. The sound quality is good… It’s not great when compared to headphones with cans or earbuds with good seals. But most models are water resistant and I believe 1 is waterproof so that’s definitely something to consider.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI often spend 8 hour days on calls, with only short breaks periodically.

This headset has transformed my experience compared to over-ear over-the-head headphones:

    * Sound quality superb for voice, and perfectly great for light music
    * Battery lasts all day, I charge overnight and haven’t yet had any issues by the end of the day
    * They’re so lightweight that you forget you’re wearing them
    * If volume is too high, you get some unpleasant vibration which is a good reminder to turn down to a sensible volume.
    * They leave your ears open to local sound (I actually put in normal earbud headphones if I want to block out background sometimes) which means you can have conversations without having to remove the headset.

Thoroughly recommended for anyone spending their life on work calls!

Only minor downside is the magnetic charging port, it works well, but the cable is short, and it would be nice to have a more standard charging option for more flexibility.

I wanted something that allowed me to listen to music/ podcasts while running but also acted as headset for Zoom calls. AfterShokx have been amazing. Quality of sound is brilliant through bone conduction and not having anything stuck in or over your ears make wearing them a pleasure.
I plan to buy more for work, cycling etc. They truly are superb.
Having a sense of your surroundings and being able to hear people when they talk is amazing.
If you want to block out the world then they are not for you. If you want listen to music and still hear the birds sing then give them a try.

Best thing I purchased in Lockdown by a mile

I wear hearing aids and using a bone induction headphone is better than streaming music and phone calls to my hearing aids. Why? Hearing aids are designed to focus on speech only and the frequency response of bone induction headphones is a wider spectrum (hearing aids – 16Hz to 16Mhz Bone Induction Headphones – 20Hz to 20Mhz). You’ll hear more than hearing aids, but not exactly as much as conventional in ear or over the ear headphones.

I used earlier models of bone induction headphones and not having a boom mike does not allow you to have your speech picked up for phone calls. It’s very faint and subject to background noise. The boom mike eliminates this problem.

This headset can be multi-point connected to two devices. I use a separate Android based music player from my regular Android smart phone. When both are connected I can be listening to music and when a phone call comes in the headphone will pause the music and answer the call by pushing the answer button on the headphone.

What is tricky with pairing two devices to a single headphone is to be aware that you set the properties in the bluetooth settings on each device. The music player properties should be set as “media” only and the phone and contacts properties should not be selected. The opposite needs to be set for the smart phone, the properties should be set to be only phone calls and contacts, but not media.

When pairing multiple devices to the headphone it is best to make sure that no other bluetooth devices are actively connected to the headphones since this causes problems during the pairing process.

What could be a nice addition to this headphone is enunciating the phone number of the phone call. This allows you to screen the calls and use the send to voice mail function so you can go back to listening to your music.

When the phone call ends the music picks up playing right where it left off (provided your music player supports this functionality).

The headphone is very light and you’ll forget you’re wearing it.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersUnobtrusive, lightweight, amazing battery life. Got this for my Macbook Air because other people have flaky audio and can be difficult to hear. This gives me good sound and the dinky boom mike has great pickup, stops me shouting at my laptop. Sound quality is good, excellent for voices, as long as you remember bone conduction works over a limited frequency range – no real bass as such, limited highs, but a warm open sound in the spoken voice range from most sources. If there’s music on a podcast it doesn’t sound weird. I can wear it all day without noticing it’s there, and I don’t look too much of a geek wearing it – headphones of course would give a better tonal range but are a bit too techy for a business call. This kind of a hidden gem – doesn’t get mentioned often compared to its Aeropex sibling with very similar sound quality, but you get the boom mike and the long battery life for a similar price.

I bought the OpenComm after first looking at AfterShokz’ other headsets for something I could use while running or biking without blocking other sounds. I decided to try the OpenComm with the boom mic since that would make it more versatile for me – I spend a lot of time in Zoom meetings as many of us do these days. I had also never tried one conduction before, so I was taking a bit of a gamble that bone conduction audio would work for me, and that the boom mic would still work OK when using them for running or biking.

First – the bone conduction works well. Occasionally I’ll get the tickle effect with certain voices, but I can usually move the headphones a little or adjust the volume and it goes away. Sure, the audio is not the same quality as my Bose noise canceling headphones, but I wasn’t expecting that. Whether I’m in a meeting, listening to a podcast or playing music, it more than meets my expectations for quality.

Second, I have found that the boom mic, when swiveled back, is not obtrusive when I’m running or biking. It touches the edge of your left ear, but it’s not uncomfortable. When I run in the winter I usually have a skull cap or balaclava, and with other headphones it would push the headphones uncomfortably into my ear. With the AfterShokz this doesn’t happen, but you do feel the part behind your ear a little bit. That doesn’t bother me.

When biking I’m wearing a helmet, and that works fine too – although I do usually swing the boom mic forward in case I get a call while riding, and it’s not something I even notice. It works to talk while riding unless I’m going very fast in which case the wind overpowers the mic (also makes it harder to hear the headphones). But I rarely am in that situation so it’s not a big deal.

The one thing that’s a little annoying with these headphones is the way the band behind your head interacts with clothing. You can move it up and down while still wearing the headphones comfortably, but if you have any sort of high collar, hoodie, jacket whatever, it will push against the band sometimes. That’s more of an issue in the winter. Generally speaking I prefer this sort of rigid band because it doesn’t move around when I’m running.

    + seemingly good build quality

    – Comfy to wear, however I’m pretty sure it makes me dizzy/off balance somehow..

    – Nice carry case, however a bit on the large side..

    – Proprietary charging lead

    – Sound quality for music is poor in comparison to an in/on ear headphone, but those are the limits of this technology, however worth the trade off for something that can be worn all day and leave the ears open.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersOverall good quality. Very lightweight and comfortable (normal headphones often give me a headache or make my ears hurt, particularly when wearing my glasses). Microphone quality is generally good, Zoom calls etc. have been fine and they work quite well with Dragon dictation, better than my previous plantronics wired headset. Two frustrations – 1) lack of an easy way to mute (have to press two buttons at once and hold them, doesn’t seem to work and is very fiddly), and 2) the proprietary charger is nice in that it’s magnetic, but annoying to have another random cable

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersBought this product mostly for video conference calls so that I don’t have things in or on my ears all day, which I find uncomfortable, or I get too hot for on ear headphones. I started with a much cheaper pair, somewhere in the region of 5 times cheaper and they do a very similar job, but I needed a boom mic to make my speech clearer, and this was the only kit that met my needs, so I begrudgingly paid the premium.
Comparing this product with the cheaper pair (Tayogo S2), firstly the functionality is nearly identical, and for the price difference this feels painful. The Tayogo uses standard micro USB charging port, wherease this product has a proprietary connection, which I don’t like, it would have been better to use a standard charging connector.
Sound quality wise, the AfterShokz just edges out the Tayogo with more concentrated bone conduction points and less tinny sound in the treble, you also get a little less vibration for base because of the more focused bone conduction points. Both units allow you to be connected to two devices, which is massively useful for PC and phone dual connectivity, makes your working day so much easier.
The use of multi-function buttons applies to both devices, however the Tayogo has a dedicated power button, which the AfterShokz does not, this probably allows the product to be smaller, however, by turning off with the volume button, you inevitably adjust the volume before the product turns off, which is a minor frustration.
The boom mic on the AfterShokz picks up your voice better than some of the other bone conducting headsets using ambient mics to get your voice, the boom does filter out some of the background noise, which is what I was looking for.
Overall, great product, but a little on the pricey side, I’d suggest a better price point would be half what I paid for it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI am looking since years for an alternative for the Plantronics PLT5200. This is until now the best headset for calls in loud environments like in the car, airport, train etc. But sometimes listening with both ears is helpful. The AirPods Pro are a great step forward but still not as good as the PLT5200. I tried a lot of bluetooth Headsets in a range from 100-400 but none was even close to the PLT. So I tested he AfterShokz. The call quality is on a new level! It is not noticed that I am not in my office. So this is really great for calls or Audio books. For music I would prefer other headsets. But who has only one headset?
It is easy to wear even for longer that 5 hours I don’t recognise the Aftershokz. The only negative point is the size for transportation. You can’t fold it so it is a not very handy headset. Here I see room for improvement 😉

A friend recommended them as the best headphones ever and I’ve bought 3 since then. Excellent sound quality, comfortable to wear, good range and battery lasts a long time. Hubby wears these all day because he spends a lot of time on the phone, then switches to another pair for the evening to watch Netflix. What I like is I can’t hear what he’s listening to even though he’s sitting next to me yet he can still hear when I’m asking him something because they don’t cut off sounds around him. My son-in-law likes that he can listen to music while supervising my grandson in a playground and still hear what the kids are saying. They don’t cut off the world around you while you’re listening to music, watching a movie or having a phone conversation. Brilliant.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe bone-conduction transducers allow unobstructed hearing with all-day comfort and mobility.
Sound quality is surprisingly good for music, though the bass and overall volume is a little weak. Not recommended for rock or metal but just fine for jazz or easy listening, though this is really a communications headset.
Microphone noise cancelling is nothing short of amazing, though the bass rolls off a bit, making your voice slightly tinny compared to a studio microphone.
The mute function is problematic, you can’t just flip up the microphone, you have to hold two buttons down simultaneously (and if you hold only one down, the unit switches off). But the biggest issue with mute is that it gives you a reminder tone every 10 seconds and it’s not a little ping; it’s two loud one-second beeps that interrupt the audio, making it unsuitable for Zoom or Teams meetings (you can mute/unmute on your phone screen and not get the tone).
Can be worn with glasses and a face mask. You can put on a mask without removing the headphones but you must maneuver the strap around the boom.

    – l’ergonomia complessiva dell’archetto appena sufficiente

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersThese are great, I suffer 5-8 hours of video calls daily and using normal headphones was giving me headaches, using the Mac’s built in mic/speaker gave degraded audio. You can wear these all day and basically not notice them, sound quality is good recipients are happy with the mic. I know many moan about the non standard charger but I suspect using USB C would have increased the size of the headset as the magnetic charger is almost completely external. All in all to those in WFH video call hell, I recommend these, they are expensive but they do help.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI have a drawer full of blue tooth headsets. Like many I now spend 8 to 10 hours a day on web conferences, and my cell phone. All of my collected devices either have batteries that can’t handle a full day, sound ok to me, but not to the person at the other end, don’t allow enough distance from my computer to wander around during a call, but mostly just aren’t comfortable enough to wear for hours and hours at a time.

Anything I’ve put in my ear, or over my ear eventually ends up as an irritant. While I haven’t used these for weeks yet, after just a few days I’ve found these to be the best device I’ve ever tried. I do wear glasses, but even 8 hours later these Opencom’s barely feel like they are there. The volume is plenty loud for me to hear those people at the other end of a Zoom that are soft or muffled, and anyone at the other end of my calls tells me that my voice is crystal clear. Wandering 30 to 40 feet to the kitchen or even the back yard doesn’t seem to interfere with the calls, decent range even compared to other bluetooth 5.0 devices I own.

I connect simultaneously to my laptop and my cell phone, so make good use of the multipoint feature, and the headset connects up to both reliably when I turn it on. (last bluetooth I had was finicky and it normally took a few tries, turning devices on and off to connect to both). Only complaint I have which has nothing to do with the aftershokz, and everything to do with the bluetooth protocal, is that the headsets will cut out from an active web conference session when the phone rings. A “beep” alert would be a better indicator, instead of silence. Again this is common to all the bluetooth devices I’ve used, and the OpenCom works exactly the same as all others.

I had never tried a bone conduction device before, but have tried pretty much everything else. These are amazing devices, highly recommend to anyone who spends hours on calls or web conferences.

    Update:
Have been wearing these now 10 hours a day 5 days a week for 4 months. These are so comfortable I barely know I”m still wearing them by evening. The slight inconvenience of cutting out for an incoming call when on a zoom meeting seems to have disappeared, maybe some setting changed, or an update resolved this. Battery life is still in excess of a day. Sound quality is excellent both listening and talking. These are amazing.

Golden Review Award: 87 From Our UsersI did see a couple of YouTube video reviews + written reviews of this product before purchasing it; I recommend you do it too (like the EBPMan’s review).

I received this headset on 13-Nov-2020 (within 24 hours of ordering it). Since purchasing, I see that the price has dropped by $20 and 10 in the US and UK respectively.

My use case: 6-8 hours EVERY DAY of phone calls and office calls on Zoom, Teams, etc. For music, I have other headsets/earphones.

Bottom line: I thoroughly recommend this product.

    Pros:
    – Major plus point – Solves the ‘hot ears’/ear fatigue problem from wearing other headsets for extended periods (I also own and have extensively used the following – Jabra 85H, Sennheiser PXC550, Samsung Galaxy Buds+, Samsung Galaxy Buds Live, Jabra 75T and the Apple AirPods) — I wear this from around 9am and to around 5:45pm every weekday (and have done so for the last 3 weeks) and these are by far the most comfortable among all the earphones/headsets I currently own and have used in the past as well
    – The quality of the noise-canceling boom mic (for the listener on the other end) is apparently excellent basis the feedback I have received
    – The volume level is good (though very high volumes can make it vibrate a bit too much on your temples)
    – Very light + soft material used all around, so no plasticky bits / rough edges, etc. (seems well made)
    – Multi-pairing — simultaneously connects to 2 devices (for me, I have it connect to my phone + laptop)
    – Good range — I walk around and into other rooms of my flat (admittedly not too big) and I don’t lose connection
    – Since the ears are open, you don’t miss your kids calling or knocks on the door, etc. Especially for home wear, this is a must, I cannot afford to be in my own little cocoon for the whole day when others too are around.
    – Water/sweat resistant
    – Good battery life, as advertised

    Cons:
    – I don’t like the proprietary charging; I would have liked USB-C so that I don’t need to carry yet another cable around, and worry about losing it
    – The length of the charging cable is short, probably 24 inches; so it seems like it is meant to be charged by plugging into your laptop/PC rather than a wall socket
    – No Android/iOS app — this means no added controls or functionality through the app
    – No Android/iOS app — importantly, this means no firmware updates — for a ~$150 product (rivals have this) and from a fairly well-established company (not a newcomer), this is disappointing
    – Whenever I switch it on, it automatically connects to my phone first; to connect to my laptop, I have to manually go to the Bluetooth devices section of my laptop and click on ‘Connect’, not sure why (note: this problem does not occur if both the paired devices are phones/tablets, so this may be an issue with my laptop)
    – These may not be great for music given the bone conduction tech. So, look elsewhere if that’s your use case

Hopefully, I haven’t forgotten anything else. Like I’ve already mentioned, I recommend this product. If this was around the $99/99 mark, that would be an absolutely killer price. Even at the current price, I’d argue that these are a must given my use case since they directly address & SOLVE my problem.

    Hope you find this useful.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI work as a trainer, being online more than 8 h/ day almost every day since this Pandemic.
I order these headphones in November, as
over the year headphones made me dizzy by wearing them so long, and ear buds hurt my ears, being kind of too big for me.
I have to say, the OpenComm headphones is an outstanding product.
These are my first bone transmission headphones, and I got used to them right away. For me, bone transmission was just conformable from the beginning. There is a slight tickle (like a vibration) on the skin sometimes, but nothing strong or unpleasant.
The microphone in amazing. Accurate, clean voice transmission.
Noise cancellation works incredibly well. Even when you get door knocking or phone ringing, they remain inaudible for your audience.
On the con side, the price is steep (I payed more than 180, incl transportation), and the standard size is too big for my head.
I use my ponytail to keep them from sliding :).
All in all, I love them. They are my best toy for the moment.
I will recommend them to all my friends, although I don’t normally recommend stuff to others. But I am really enthusiastic about these headphones.

Golden Review Award: 206 From Our UsersMichael C. Jackson’s review is comprehensive and I agree with him on all points, but since there aren’t a lot of reviews yet I just wanted to add one more positive vote for these. I’ve been looking for a headset like this for a long time and am so grateful to AfterShokz for producing them.

Everyone has different needs, so I’ll list what mine are and why these respond so well to them:

    * I work from home and am on a lot of conference calls or one-on-one calls throughout the day at various times. These pair immediately and solidly so that I don’t have to worry about my connection or wait for them to pair (I use a Mac, if that matters)
    * I don’t like things directly on or around my ears – they get hot & uncomfortable with pretty much anything on them. And I got an ear infection a few years ago from wearing true wireless earbuds so haven’t been thrilled about sticking things in my ears either. These AfterShokz are comfortable enough to wear all day, and the battery lasts well beyond a day so I put them on in the morning, have them on throughout the work day, and then charge them at night.
    * I like being able to hear the call clearly but also being able to hear what’s going on physically around me. These are stellar for that.

As soon as I got them, I tested the sound quality with a coworker and compared my iMac’s build-in microphone, my AirPod Pros, and the AfterShokz OpenComms. He said that there was no comparison – the OpenComms were clear and vivid, as if I were talking directly into the phone, and it was the best I’d ever sounded on calls.

I’ve used AfterShokz bone conduction headphones for years for running, hiking, or walking my dogs, so I’m used to the sound quality – I wouldn’t wear anything else for those purposes, and I was super stoked when I saw that AfterShokz had made a headset for calls and was really, really hoping that the boom mic would deliver, but they exceeded my expectations – my coworker, who is literally a professional audio engineer, said they sound great.

As others have noted, you don’t wear these expecting high-end audio on your end, although they do sound surprisingly good (and even better if you wear earplugs – they include a pair in the box), but for calls the sound of your callers’ voices comes through clear with no problems – I have zero difficulty making out what anyone’s saying and after about a week’s worth of use I don’t even think about it anymore – it just feels natural now.

If comfort, sound quality of your voice on your listener’s end, and reliability of connection matter to you, I can’t imagine anything beating these guys. It’s an absolute home run for me and has made my working life a heck of a lot easier.

Golden Review Award: 31 From Our UsersThe design is similar to Aftershokz Aeropex, except this one has a boom microphone

    – The microphone can be rotated 180 degree
    – As for mic quality, my coworker said they can hear me clearly. There is a noise cancelling hole on the boom to cut out background noise
    – I have this paired to my work laptop & home PC. Once I turn off my laptop after work and turn on my home PC, the headset connects automatically.
    – it comes with a hard traveling case & magnetic charging cable

Golden Review Award: 317 From Our UsersI’m relatively new to bone conduction headsets – prior to this, I’ve only used the opencomm air. Getting that particular headset was revelatory for me – I’ve always had some hearing loss, and in particular, have had a hard time understanding speech. The air just completely cut through the muddiness of my hearing – and while it was certainly not perfect, the tradeoffs were worth it. I am on video calls all day long – the battery just couldn’t cut it, and the mics picked up way too much, so I didn’t really use it for this.

I had high hopes for the opencomm – I’m fairly sure I’m one of the first people to get this, I sort of found it by accident, and it didn’t seem like there was a lot of info out there about it. So this was a total leap of faith — and it has paid off. That being said, keep in mind that I’m writing this early in the product cycle, and without the “pro” to compare it to.

At this point in time, there’s only a bit of information out there about this headset, and there’s some mention of the Aftershokz Pro – Those aren’t out yet, but it’s also not immediately clear what differentiates them, there’s no clear comparison. As far as I can tell, the Pros will offer an IR sensor to detect when the headset is on or off that frankly is not an important feature for me to have, and I consider myself a “professional.” I haven’t found anything different yet, but again, we are early in the product cycle.

I’m a few days into it, but what I’m getting form this that I wasn’t getting from the air is enough battery life to handle my days full of calls, a mic that picks my voice up with better clarity and no background noise, and higher quality audio.

    So what’s to complain about?
    – A dedicated hardware mute button would catapult this into absolute perfection – You can mute via holding both volume buttons, but it’s slow, and you get the loud double beep periodically (I found it to be loud, but not painfully loud as some have describe some of the other headsets). I really don’t understand why more headsets don’t offer a better mute experience, given it’s something that can see heavy use.

What some other people may notice:
    – The air would pair with two devices simultaneously, the opencomm only works with one device at a time. Note that I don’t mean that you have to re-pair the device whenever you want to switch, you just have to manually disconnect from one and connect to another. This isn’t a problem in practice for me, and the two device functionality could always be a bit odd, so I don’t see it as a loss.

Things I am really surprised by:
    – The audio is significantly higher quality than I expected. You are still going to be lacking bass, but not as drastically as the air. I’d still prefer my sennheiser HD600s for music, but that’s hardly a fair comparison, and there are tradeoffs due to my hearing (lyrics are harder for me personally with any non-conductive headset/headphones – but I’m a weird edge case).
    – Wearing earplugs and switching the EQ in the headset fixes the bass issue – like, entirely. This was something that was just “OK” on the airs, there were times I couldn’t tell the difference. Not the case here, it’s a clear difference. It’s still not going to be a perfectly flat curve, but it’s REALLY good given the tech involved. Is it as good as a headphone amp hooked up to studio grade headphones? No, and it isn’t supposed to be- but it’s damned good, and stands up to surprisingly critical listening.
    – Bluetooth range is REALLY good, at least for my house/setup.
    – Probably the most comfortable full headset I’ve worn, the mic doesn’t change the comfort you’d get out of the Air (again, the only other comparison I really have)

    Things I am ambivalent about:
    – I could take or leave the magnetic charging. It’s a trade-off between the ease of use and lack of wear from magnetic charging, or the ease of finding widely available standard USB cables and not having to keep track of the one cable that works. It’s probably a win for you if you only use this headset in the same location or with the same laptop, as the lack of port wear should make it more reliable.

Bottom line is that this is a really good headset, and I feel like it’s priced fairly for what all it offers – and for me personally, the benefits MAJORLY outweigh any of my complaints, which are admittedly minor complaints… really, just that there are some quality of life things that could be done for muting.

I’ve been using a Sennheiser presence for the past few years, and while I’ve tried other headsets, it’s always been the wireless headset with the best battery life, range, and fidelity, and certainly the best sounding mic of any I have used. Nothing has knocked it off of its throne, but I think the OpenComm just might.

If you have not used a bone conduction headset before, you should be aware that this is a very different experience, and you shouldn’t expect that you will get hi-fi full-range audio beamed directly into your cochlea. You will lack bass, and you will still hear more of the world around you which may or may not be good depending on your scenario (and you can always use earplugs to help with both of these things.) I wouldn’t use these to replace my studio headphones for audio mixing.

I am not in a position to say if this will help with any hearing loss for you personally, and this is not a medical device, nor does it claim to be beneficial here. My experience with this should not necessarily guide any decisions made for hearing loss reasons, I am an edge case. But if you have found bone conduction headsets to be beneficial, this should be a no-brainer for you. And if you have perfect hearing, this could still be a great option due to the clarity of speech through it, the comfort, the battery life, and the range.
