Haven’t used headphones for years and the comparison with my old Senheisser noise cancelling headphones is amazing – just shows how technology has advanced that a cheapish pair of headphones are now better than an older pair that cost twice the price.

As the title says, these headphones are offering excellent sound quality, they are quite flat so the low ends are reduced. However, I had a tough time the first couple of weeks but I tried to reduce the clamping force by pulling the sides softly multiple times. That seems that is working and now they are not compressing my head (I think my head is on the bigger side anyway). I think they would better with softer earpads. I got them in a great price from Amazon and I am using for listening everything (radio, music or playing my electric guitars).

Excellent value for money. Comforable and well made. These are not headphones for listening to your mobile on or using day to day for commuting. These are monitors that provide a completely neutral and honest sound. No bass enhancement but give a full and crisp sound. Fantastic for studio work as they tell the truth and you car hear all the individual components in the mix. Closed back so kill a lot of background noise but all. No cancellation frequencies etc. Chose them over the m50x as more neutral bass. Highly recommend as a recording tool for your instrument or DAW. I use them for ableton, electronic drums, keyboards, electric/accoustic and bass guitar. Coil cable and straight cable are both good lengths and its great that you can disconnect them from the headset too. Very happy with them. Hopefully they last the test of time.

Been using my pair since June 2019 for mixing music and they are still as good as the first use. Good sound quality, noise reduction and build quaity and well worth the price.
    Would buy again.

I absolutely love these headphones and have bought 2 pairs of them in within the past 6 years. They are usually my go-to recommendation but unfortunately they won’t be anymore

After just 2 years the second pair has broken, and has broken again with the exact same issue the first pair broke with, which is that the hinge holding in the left-side headphone has snapped, leaving the headphone loose and near-impossible to wear.

The sound quality of these is great, and for the price sounds amazing, but the flimsy design is really annoying and I have hated it since my first pair. I couldn’t care less about folding the headphones at all, and the design just makes it more prone to breakage which how much the earphones can twist around.

I would recommend them still, but you’ll have to take extreme care with them. (And yes, I was taking them off two-handed and slowly after the first pair broke on me yet these still went and broke with the same issue)

Been using these as my daily driver for 3 years until the hinge on the left ear finally snapped. These things are great – fantastic sound quality, volume and noise cancelling. Will say that the ear pads got tatty quite quickly. The faux leather like material begins to peel away which doesn’t look great and gets everywhere. I would definitely recommend, and I’ll still be using them as bootleg speakers until I can get something to replace them temporarily.

As someone who has been purchasing cheap headphones every 6-9 months most of my adult life, I’ve always been hesitant to purchase more expensive brands. I took the risk on the reccomendation of a friend and I have to say I’m extremely pleased. The cables are very long which is incredibly helpful with my setup. I’m not an audio technician or anything like that, but even I can tell the sound quality coming out of these things is far superior to the cheap ones you can get for 20-30 pounds. This was well worth spending a bit more cash on, I can tell they are built to last, they feel sturdy and safe yet have a design which allows for incredible flexibility, you can move the earpads in ways that would simply break inferior designs.
I wholeheartedly reccomend these headphones to anyone like me who has been wasting money on cheap stuff that breaks quickly and doesn’t delivery quality. Take the plunge and buy a pair, you won’t be dissapointed.

I researched high and low to buy affordable headphones that were really good to make music with (I’m talking recording and mixing). I am a recording artist and I absolutely love these….so much so I wore my first one out and bought another one. Super sturdy, sound quality is A1, noise cancelation is pretty decent….I mean, if they had a small version of these I would get them to use for my commute. LOVE THESE!!!!

The negative reviews seem to be where people don’t understand what they are getting here. They are flat, they won’t make your bassy booming dance tracks or shrill orchestral favs sound wow, they are to highlight where certain frequencies are dominating so you can adjust them in your mix. If you want to be wowed when listening to your fav tuned on the bus to work then you’ll need to look elsewhere.

If, however, you make music and want to see where your mix has flaws then this might be a good set to use in your pursuit of getting your track sounding the best it can when played on various speakers. Plus, they are cheap for what they do, just have a look at the prices of genuine pro monitor headphones. These are great for those musicians on a budge

excellent sound quality for the price and the fit is also good. The over ear design cuts out outside noise and allows the headphones quality to gliste

he sound is fairly honest for the price but it’s not as neutral as they say. it has too many bass frequencies to be neutral and the mids don’t cut into the mix as i expected. it sounds a bit muffled but of course it’s all a matter of personal taste but the hi-fi quality is there. it all depends on what is expected.

I have gone through many pairs of headphones including high end ones like Bose and Apple, however these are perfect for everyday use on the PC. The sound and bass are good, but the best feature is the comfort. I have a large head and most headphones give me a headache due to tightness, these allow you to adapt them to your head shape and are very comfortable. I am glad I took the chance on these and will continue to use AT products in the future.

I have been using some Audio-Technica ATH-M30X headphones for a few years and wanted a better pair for monitoring. I considered the M50X but after reading the reviews on the M40X’s I thought I would take a chance and I wasn’t disappointed. They are a bit more comfortable then the M30X’s mainly due to the higher quality padded earpieces, the sound is a big improvement too.

I use this with my digital piano. The sound is awesome: it feels like a full grand piano in a concert hall…. almost daunting!

Good neutral sound and excellent value for money. Bass lacks a bit of depth and precision but willing to accept it for the price. Midrange and highs are relaxed and neutral, also good soundstage and precision in these frequency bands. Have paired it with a Dragonfly black playing high res audio files and I’m quite happy with it. You can improve on its performance but you’ll have to pay more. Not the most comfortable for long listening sessions (bit of a tight fit for me) but I’ve still worn them for hours when working without major fatigue, so above average. Although they have no active noise cancellation, they fit tight enough over the ear to drown out most of the environment noise. Finally despite being closed type you still get non negligible leak to the surrounding space, so something to bear in mind if you plan to use them on high volume in an area where you might disturb others.

Fit is tight but not uncomfortable for my large head
Sound quality is very balanced. Picked up mis chords and harmonic tonals I have never heard before on cheaper headsets
Easy to collapse, maybe too easy as picking up can trigger this…
Good choice of cables. Easy to use/setup.
Missed a few deliveries as I couldn’t hear someone knocking…
    Would buy again.

For the longest time I’ve been using the lower end ATH-M20x model which have been pretty much perfect for me, but after developing a rattle in the right earcup (I drive these things pretty hard on my desktop) and having the pads turn to a cracked, solid lump, I decided to upgrade.

These things are amazing. The size adjustment is much nicer and stays in place properly, the detachable cable is excellent (my 20x cable turned to inflexible plastic near the top), they cancel out noise much more effectively, and they sound better. This is not to bash the 20x – for the price they are an excellent pair and sound wonderful, it’s just that these 40xes are another league above.

My only annoyances are the fact that the cable is semi-proprietary and it clamps a little too much on my head and causes some pain in my right ear after a long time. The cable has a built in locking mechanism and uses a smaller jack to plug in. The locking feature is neat but when it gets caught in my chair I would rather it disconnect than violently rip the headphones off my head…!

I don’t care much for the folding aspect (and I’ve pinched my fingers with it before…) but it’s a neat option to have.

I would highly recommend these to anyone looking for a decent pair of monitors, or in my case with a slight EQ, a regular pair of headphones.

These are the best headphones I’ve ever owned. I got them for mixing music as the reviews recommended them as a good natural balanced sound & they don’t disappoint. I also use them for listening to films etc, so they’re good all round. Build quality is good & noise cancellation isn’t bad though I’ve not used them outside the house.

    Sound
If you want heavy subby bass, these aren’t for you. if you want clear, clean accurate reference headphones, for mixing purposes, they’re great and excellent value

    Construction
the cups are articulated so that they can swivel and turn very easily. That’s a great thing if you’re a DJ trying to mix and hold over one ear I guess but it’s slightly irritating when you just want a well-made, easy to put on your head pair of headphones. That said, the construction feels very good quality.

    Comfort
I think I have a fairly big head and these do seem to clamp to my head quite tightly, but the padding is generous around the ears and the top head band. So I have worn these a few of times for a couple fo hours straight with no discomfort.

    Recording
Being closed cup, they are great for recording vocals and we have found no bleed when singing even very closely to a mic

    Accessories
Came with a nice quality pouch, but you do have to fold the headphones down to get them in. A great thing about these phones though is the interchangeable leads – long straight and shorter curled. I really like the locking plug that attaches to the headphones so you can’t accidentally pull it out.

    Conclusion
For the money these are really good quality headphones and would suit a studio or live situation very well. the folding up design is a very, very minor irritation for me that somebody else would really like. I know nothing about DJing and listen mostly to recorded live acoustic music, rather than digital. Would thoroughly recommend them

Ok I make hard techno and I create everything on headphones and I listen to them loud these headphones can take it
The base is so heavy I can feel it in my feet !!!
They are strong and the spiral cable is very good I’m always tripping over the lead when creating but not now
I’ve had many pairs of headphones and killed them all these are as good as the next ones up and they cost a fair amount more
If you want headphones that sound like a 7 k rig in youre head buy these
Not to heavy on you head and pretty comfortable over the long hours creating the hardest music on earth
I’m impressed I’m really glad I bought these
Buy them but watch you’re ears !!!

Having gotten back into my music making/production over the lockdown (after 35yrs dabbling in and out) I decided it was time to get as best a production set up as I could on a strict budget! Initially I was looking at reference monitors in the 200 range and almost decided… and then a mate of mine who is a sound engineer in LA said not to bother, my mixes were pretty good and that I’d need to spend a lot more to get any real benefit! Good advice well received… but this didn’t solve the noise issue… ie, my family having to listen to me playing tracks or sections of track over, and over, and over again at high volume! The other downside is that my desktop speakers, although awesome from a Hi-Fi angle, are pretty ‘eq’d’ and so mixes tended to be a bit wooly when played through other systems… such as the good old car stereo! Rambling now so getting to the point, for me these headphones tick all of the boxes… great sound in general, clear mid’s and top’s with a more restrained bass response… this allows for the bass to be punchy enough without overpowering which basically makes it a lot easier to balance your music! In summary, my family are happy ‘cos they don’t have to endure Dad’s Rock, and I’m happy because they work really well and I’ve saved a bunch of cash that I can invest elsewhere!! (ps. nothing gets 5*… but that’s just me!) ^_^

To me, they sounded really harsh. No flat sound.
The highs are too loud and the lows are too stiff. I hate the low sensitivity, I really had to push them with amp. Best for DJ’ing but not for hi-fi.
All in all these are a good set of headphones but I still prefer the underdog JTS HP-535, with better sensitivity, the lows are really low and transparent highs. To me that’s a flat sound.

I am very impressed with these Audio-Technica ATH-M40X headphones, which I had ordered for my amateur home studio setup as a music lover and aspiring musician. These cans are great value for money while being of impeccable quality.
The build quality of these headphones is nice and sturdy: these headphones don’t feel flimsy or like a toy, and the materials feel good. The earpads are thick and soft, which makes these cans comfortable to wear unlike some other studio-oriented cans. These also make the sound isolation is great; obviously it does not block out everything (these are not noise-cancelling) but the earpads do muffle a lot of noise around you (I’d say by around 50%).

    Would definitely recommend!

Had a nice pair of cans but open ear, and decided to treat myself to a decent pairof closed ear was choice between Beyer and these, so pleased with these comfortable great sound, bass is good but if you need more go for the m50X model with larger drivers. good as monitoring cans

These headphones are great value for money and user friendly. However they are not as neutral and balanced as I expected from advertising descriptions. They are quite bass orientated, maybe not so adept in the “sub-sonic” bottom end as the often compared M50x version, but they definitely are not as flat as I was expecting.
I bought them for use with my electronic drum kit and they are quite involving for that purpose. I also use them for plugging into my mobile phone when practicing my acoustic drum set and they’re great for that too. They have a sufficiently low impedance level to be powered by a mobile phone or laptop, even though they were designed primarily for amplified use. Equally they are quite effective at mitigating the volume impact of playing a drum set in more confined spaces and the coiled lead is a fantastic feature when used in that context. The headband is surprisingly comfortable too and the earpads do eliminate sound spill quite effectively. The detachable cable choice is a major selling point for me and having the choice of both regular studio and mini jacks is ideal. They are light weight for over ear studio headphones and are fine for wearing over extended periods. The folding features are useful too and they do sit comfortably when resting on the neck.
Overall they are very user friendly as tools for the working musician or home studio engineer at their price point but may not match the total hi-fi experience you might be searching for. Ultimately I’m still very happy with my purchase and I do recommend them as a value for money product.

These Cans are superb! lovely and crisp sound and not bass heavy but just right, the neutral note is just what I wanted and not processed to affect the source sound, the only thing I would say if you got large ears or head then these get uncomfortable after a longer period so would prefer larger cups. these are still a firm favourite of mine just the comfort issue.

When I first bought these headphones and tried them on, I immediately knew that my ears were finally being blessed. I used to use the Sennheiser CX300 which are quite great in-ear headphones, HOWEVER the ATH-M40X really blew me away. The sound quality was great and they were solid headphones for the price. They were a little tight in the beginning but as I continued to use it, they became a bit looser and much more comfortable. They’re quite sturdy despite their flimsiness when the cups rotate. Overall, comfortability is 8/10, it could be better at first because wearing it for long periods of time isn’t the greatest, but it does get better (it’s even comfortable to sleep with them on). Sound quality, 10/10 for the price since you could obviously find headphones with much better sound quality but I believe that this one is the best within the price range. I’m very happy with my purchase.

I had the older version of these and replaced them with the M50s, which are very detailed but a bit too bassy for mixing. I feel these have a flatter response which gives me a more accurate mix.

I am a music producer and I needed a headphone the could block the noise while I am recording and allowed me to work on the road. The prob that I had before was mixing and mastering far away from myspeakers but with this headphones the quality is the same.

The only thing that is the bsd part, it is the sensitivity of the material. As it is articulated you have to be carefull for no breaking it. But I love i

    Very good

Bought these to replace my old m20x pair, and the difference is night and day! Feels like these headphones remove the muffle from the sound to produce the most crisp and nice sound they can.
Some say it’s not comfortable to wear, but it doesn’t feel like that at all. I can put these on my head and forget they even exist, much like i could with the m20x.
Only con I’ve found is that there’s a tiiiiinny more treble than I’d like, but then again it does a nice job of giving clarity, especially since there’s noticeable, but not overpowering bass. (In comparison, the m20x had what it felt like no bass at all)
If you’re considering these to replace an older pair you won’t be disappointed.

The quality of these are great. I especially like the plug in connector for the lead at the ear cup. Too many headphones of mine have broken at one or the other end of the lead, so nice to have these with replaceable leads. Two in the box as well. One straight, one coiled. Sound is amazing, if a tiny bit heavy on the bass side. Sound isolation is very good as well.

No other previous or current pair of headphones have impressed me as much as these.
Excellent sound with any genre I like (classic, symphonic, new age, dance, hard rock) Tested with the EQ off and sound direct from the source, they performed brilliantly.
The only con is that are too fix for me, after roughly about one-two hours tend to become quite uncomfortable.
Purchased primarily for audio editing so I’ll keep them despite the con.

These headphones are incredibly comfy , the sound quality is excellent and with a very respectable bass . You can hear very little outside noise with these but they don’t have noise cancellation. Build quality and packaging is very good my only complaint is the compact feature, which is very annoying and closes when I just want to put my headphones on.

For the first week I was genuinely considering returning them as they were painful to wear for long periods of time, but a week in they’re as comfortable as any of my other pairs of headphones. They need a while to stretch to your head size.
The ear-cushions are comfortable but the constant pressure really makes you feel the pleather material. It’s not uncomfortable but you can feel it, so you might want to get new cushions if that sort of thing bothers you. It bothers me but not enough for me to buy replacements.
They’re my first ‘proper’ set of headphones after a long series of earbuds, gaming headsets and cheap bluetooth headphones so I can’t speak as to their sound quality when compared to other headphones of their class. They are, however, significantly better than anything I’ve used before.

  49. John Halamka says:

These sound really good for the price. They tend to get warm after wearing for longer. The cavity where your ear sits tends to be a bit on the smaller side, but you can adjust the ear pads to fit. If you get replacement pads be mindful that the sound quality will change slightly. I would definitely recommend them if you listen to EDM, Dubstep, Drum and Bass etc.

They can be used with a phone or directly from the PC, but they do sound better from a small headphone amplifier such as Fiio K3 or E10K.

They sound amazing. Good sub bass extension.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’ve been using these headphones exclusively for the past nine months and think they are brilliant in almost all aspects. If you are considering getting these, you won’t be disappointed.

Firstly, the sound quality is fantastic. The best way to describe the sound would be honest, and very crisp. By “honest” I mean the headphones do not artificially enhance the sound by adding loads of additional bass or treble like other headphones out there, which means you get a perfect representation of what you are listening to. Of course, this is perfect for music production and working on audio for accuracy; however, it’s brilliant for casual listening too. This is one of the main reasons I stuck with buying these over the M50xs, as a lot of people have reported the sound on them is too exaggerated in terms of the bass and treble which can take away from the original audio. Additionally, the frequency response is wide (and not far off the M50x) meaning that it really does pick up a lot of detail in songs that you probably didn’t hear before if you were listening on cheaper headphones like I was. It’s a fun experience picking up on things you have never noticed in songs before using these.

As for the build quality, again these headphones impress and deliver a professional feel. The earcups cover your ears entirely and also rotate slightly to fit your head comfortably, even when wearing them for hours there’s no discomfort around the ears for me. You get a bit of sound isolation because of this, and I also don’t find they get hot to wear. Because the ear cups rotate 90 degrees, you can easily get them out the way when wearing the headphones around your neck. Moreover, you can fold the headphones up into themselves to carry around easier or to just store away whilst they give a couple of reassuring clicks into position. The cables also click nicely into the headphones and are rotated and locked in so they can’t fall out. Everything feels like they are going to last a long time and withstand a lot of use. Definitely a premium feeling product.

As well as the headphones themselves, it’s important to note the accessories that come with them. There is a nice leather feeling carry pouch which is soft on the inside to carry the headphones around in, or to avoid dust which is a great addition. Again, like the headphones, it feels durable, and also has the Audio Technica logo embossed on it which looks classy. Additionally, a 6.3mm adapter is included which is to be expected with headphones like these, but its gold plated and great quality with no connection issues just like the cables. The cables included are one long 3m straight cable, and one 1.2 to 3m coiled cable. Top notch quality.

As for cons, well there is pretty big one if you want to take them around outside with you, which is that there is no short portable cable, only a bulkier coiled one, and a long 3m cable which both would be inconvenient to carry around. So, obviously most people would want to get another cable separately. Another thing is that the padding on the top of the headphones isn’t the softest as they sit on your head (at least after a long time), but it’s not too uncomfortable regardless.

Overall, these headphones are brilliant in my opinion; they sound great, feel great, and the price is well worth it for everything you get. Would totally recommend, especially for the price tag. Hopefully this review was helpful.

Amazing honest sound quality – Absolutely worth the money

Whilst my daily drivers are my Beyerdynamic 880s (due to comfort), these offer similar quality for half the price.

    Noise cancellation:

Decent. They dont have active noise cancellation, but the closed back design definitely prevents sound leaking out and external sounds getting in.

    Sound quality:

Fantastic bass. In fact I will usually switch to these away from my Beyerdynamics if I’m listening to any bass-y music. The highs are a touch flat and the sound stage isn’t great (but that’s to be expected from closed back headphones).

    Bass quality:

Superb. If you like bass dominant music then you probably won’t find a better value for money pair of headphones than these. Do youself a favour and hook them up to an audio interface of dedicated DAC.

    Build Quality:

Stunning. Seem very robust, I think these will last me many years.

The flat response of these headphones is second to none in this price range. Ideal for mixing and producing music as there’s no added bass, etc. If you want to listen to music as it was recorded, these will give you the cheapest way to do that. They’re not my favourite design when wearing them, but the sound is what matters.

Fantastic sound, makes listening to music a whole new experience. Read / saw all the reviews for similar products but at this price point its a no brainer…just remember to get the best from these spend another 20 on decent earpads, the ones supplied are really nasty.

Compared to my old bass boosted headphones, the m40x is so much more clean and clear, bass is good not over powering. These are perfect for editing, music production and even casual use. 10/10 for the sound

The built quality is a bit weak, I feel as though I have to be ultra gentle with it. This is because of the plastic on each sides of the headphones, but apart from that its a 7/10

I didn’t have much issue with comfort like some people have experienced. Ears do get warm after long use but that’s about it. Pads can be replaced for better comfort.. 9/10

I was close to not buying these because of some mixed reviews, Brought them anyway and glad I did. I would recommend.

Comfortable headphones with great sound quality. I only use these for bedroom music production so can’t really comment on the durability of them but I have nothing bad to say!

purchased these for my wife. These are the best sounding headphones we have ever owned, and regret giving them to her !

the sound is extremely neutral, very balanced. No heavy bass, nothing is enhanced, everythinbg sounds the way it was intended to sound like.

The build quality of the headphones is tremendous, solid, all good materials.

Something to be said though : they are not the fanciest looking headphones.

If you only care about sound quality and build quality though, these are highly recommended

They are comfy, produce good quality sound, no overwhelming bass (I hate bass), but clear pure sound. Solidly built too. Very pleased I went for these and not their senior brother M50X, as I read that M50X would have more pronounced bass. No other differences it seems.

Pretty decent headphones for the price. Have these as a backup for my ATH-M50, not as good a bass response, and feel cheaper but sound pretty good and have an even response. For the money would definitely recommend.

The build quality is excellent,I’ve had it for a few years and has not let me down. A coiled cable and straight cable are provided which should last you for as long as the headphones themselves. The connection at the headphones is a AT proprietary one which can put some off. The carry case is also great.

Now for the sound quality, these punch above their price! You get a flat response through out the frequency range and the loudness is probably +/-3db at all frequencies compared (this is a good thing by the way, it means your bass will sound as loud as your highs). This is not a boomy bass response type of headphones, so all music will sound even and not overly trebly or bassy.

The cushions are comfortable, I can keep it on for a couple of hours before fatigue. Well built headphones that should last me for many years!

    Good build quality
Acoustics very good for my needs (and age)
propriety cable link = costs more for cables – however, a coiled and an uncoiled cable are included

The only negative for me is the lack of independent adjustment of the left and right ear pieces – not a complaint, only a comment (and a suggestion! 🙂 )

    Excellent headphones.
I can understand why some reviewers say they love and hate them at the same time as they will definitely highlight the flaws in more poorly recorded music.
However, the sound quality, presence and soundstage are second to none.
I have four other pairs of good quality headphones, but I haven’t used any others since I unboxed these.
If you’re a bass-head, these are not for you. Buy the MH50’s for twice the price.
But if you want to hear your music as the artists and mixing engineers intended, buy these.
    They are awesome!

These headphones punch well above their weight, and now they’re even less what I bought them for (They were 73 before, and worth it then, too). They have really clear audio quality, good noise cancellation and are very durable. I must have dropped them and rolled my chair over the cable hundreds of times. (you actually get 2 cables of different lengths).
One thing to bear in mind is that they are tuned flat to help with audio engineering, but I use them as general purpose headphones and think they’re fantastic.
Also, when I bought them, I found them too small and they were painful to wear for extended periods – this went away after a few weeks, probably due to the headband stretching out to take my fat head. You could probably do this painlessly if you just put them around something about the size of your head.

I got these for home recording and they glorify the bass too much – i went back to my cheaper logitech phones for a more balanced mix.
Otherwise very good – but not for mixing.

These headphones sound fantastic, very neutral and clear. The quality is good, I use them everyday outdoors whilst walking in all weathers. 4 stars instead of 5 only because the pads are a little thin, however, replacement pads are readily available. Overall great value for money and I think they sound better than the more expensive 50x.

I researched many headbphones and it boiked down to 2.

I am so glad I got these over the Sony. These are very comfortable and the sound is very clear. As a podcaster the sound gives voice clarity.

These headphones are great for casual listeners. Don’t order used headphones, Amazon is generally really good but ording used items means they might still be broken as was the case for one of my headphone speakers

I’m wearing these a lot for arranging / composing, so they have to sit well on the ear and have a true sound, both of which they perform very well indeed. They don’t cancel noise – they’re not supposed to – but in terms of sound quality (which is why I bought them) they’re second to none

Wonderfully comfortable, brilliant sound quality, simply a high quality product. Each phone can be flipped up out of the way like they do in studios, if that’s of any interest to you. They come with two cables, one spiralled stretchy type which I use all the time, and a very long straight cord. I also have a pair of very good sennheisers, these are at least as good, I certainly prefer these though.
