Without a Chimney Sheep

  • An open chimney is likely to be the single biggest source of air loss in a home. It is comparable to leaving a window open all the time, except that the passage of warm air out is exacerbated by a phenomenon known as the stack effect.
  • Open chimneys will draw an average of 80 cubic metres of air out of a building per hour, more often that not it is warm air produced from our heating systems!
  • The volume of air that escapes needs to be replaced, so cold air is pulled in from other leaky parts of the building, such as keyholes, gaps around your doors and tiny gaps around your windows

With a Chimney Sheep

  • A Chimney Sheep will reduce the amount of warm air being pulled out of your home, whilst still providing sufficient ventilation. Your house retains its heat!
  • Less hot air is leaving, so less cold air is pulled in! The result? A warmer, comfier, more energy-efficient home!

    Chimney Sheep
My chimney balloon burst after serval attempts to sort I gave up. These chimney sheep are expensive, especially the large one for the Victorian chimney in my property.
However worth every penny , taken some time to get the measurements correct and took me less than 5 minutes to install . Fitted snug all round , job done.
It makes sense blocking the chimney but I have no scientific way of agreeing so accept it helps , the wife has the heating on at warp factor 10 all the time so it can not be a bad thing !

We use it because our damper is broken. Did not hold in place on its own because of the way our flue is built. I use a flexible piece of wood to hold it in place. Easy to trim to size. Does the job!

I loved how easy it was to install. I just had to remove the flue handle that had a cotter pin in it, but that was pretty easy. I just neglected to measure before I ordered the first time, but now that I have the right size, it works great!

To say that I was ill-prepared to install this is an understatement. To say that Jason at CleverlySolved gave me unparalleled customer support is an even bigger understatement. Product is good, instructions and guidance is also, but the patience and personal hand-holding (via email but basically) helped the least prepared person (me) be able to see what an ease installation can be. Outstanding overall!

Little Gem! Does what it says!
We just had our beautiful old chimney cleaned and capped and had old rusty flue removed. We are still trying to decide if we are going to install a gas or electric insert, and for the time being have an electric log heater. So this item is perfect for us.

I had an unusual size to fit. 9×30
So I purchased the 13×35 and trimmed it down. It was simple to do.
It fits perfect and is made beautifully. I already feel and hear the difference. No draft, no sound (it is a windy day today) and look forward to the insulation during the summer when our central AC is on.
    Thank you FlueBlocker!

Used the Chimney Sheep Plug to close up an old chimney in the living room which has a small heater in it instead of wood burning. Installation was easy and sealed up tight around the perimeter inside the flue once pushed up in place.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIt’s thick and is a better draft blocker than a balloon. It can theoretically be trimmed to fit your chimney if needed, we didn’t try that and just left a bit of overlap. Medium easy to install. Very easy to take out by just curling the corner to loosen.

    Does stop the down draf
This is the non inflation kind of chimney sheep. Easy to install although it is far too big, there wasn’t the correct size offered. I had to measure the actual fire opening as the chimney itself is over a metre higher. I left it in its plastic to try it out, and with “storm ciara” raging you could hear it being sucked and pushed up and down the chimney. However it does save the room from the draft. So all in all a great buy

    Such a difference!!!
So we have a large chimney opening so we had to get an expensive, large chimney sheep. We ummed and arrhed As it was expensive, but I can honestly say it’s the best purchase we have made in a long while. The living room was noticeable warmer that first evening and it has made such a difference. We previously had a balloon which was nowhere near as good.
Highly recommend even with the price tag.

    No longer have cold draught!
Our north facing, living room used to have a cold downdraught when fire not in use, making the room very cold in winter. There were good instructions re measurements before purchase and pleased that I bought the right one. As the largest, this was slightly fiddly to insert, but has now drastically reduced the draught and made the room much more liveable. Great product.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersWow. 30 seconds and the Chimney Flue is sealed. This works. Just get it BIGGER that the damper opening to your Chimney Flue. So, my opening is 35 x 6. I bought 35 x 13. OMG it fits like a glove. And I love the insert card with the story of the Herdwick Sheep. I am keeping his picture. I will call him Ted. Tanks Ted. The cold draft from heck just went away, just like that. Thank you Flueblocker.

    It works!
It seemed like a lot of money to stuff up the chimney (mine was the largest size)…and the parcel felt gloomily light BUT it has worked a treat and really there is nothing one could improvise that would do the job as well. No more dust and bits in the fire-place which I can now use for other purposes.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSo good I bought 3.
I was a little sceptical when I saw these, so I order one to see if it worked… I’m now the proud owner of 3 chimney sheep, a flock effectively and I can’t recommend them highly enough. I’ve tried and failed with the balloonsrepeatedly and they honestly scared the living daylights out of me when they deflated and fell out, nearly always in the middle of the night….

So I went searching for a better solution and came across these. I ordered a size slightly bigger than I actually needed, and I can’t see them dislodging anytime soon, they are all wedged in, good and proper, keeping my house draft and chimney debris free.

Yes they’re expensive, but with the money I’ve wasted on the balloons, wish I’d seen these years ago.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWish I had done this years ago
Bought two of these for perpetually icy rooms with ornamental (purely decorative) cast iron fireplaces. I opened the ‘door’ (no idea what it is called) of each fireplace and discovered there was nothing but cold air and sooty brick all the way up the chimney to the outside. I had previously purchased smaller round versions for another room (with an open brick fireplace and round flues) so checked the Chimney Sheep website for sizes and shapes, got a flashlight and measuring tape, reached in and measured as best I could. Only the largest rectangular size would have worked. I folded them in, secured the handles once the felt was inside, then folded them out in the icy void and pushed them into place just a few inches above where the ‘door’ is. Just brilliant – the chill is gone from the air, no more drafts, no more lugging the portable heater in for extra warmth. I would definitely recommend these!

    It actually works!
    Does the job! It’s perfect.
I was a bit apprehensive about spending 60+ on essentially some thick felt but once it was up in the chimney the living room is now chill & draught free. I’m sure it will have an effect on my energy bills-eventually!-but it was more about comfort than cost. Highly recommend.

Chimney Sheep stops debris and keeps house insulated
The chimney sheep is brilliant. I have 3 chimneys of varying sizes and tried those balloons unsuccessfully – they slip down and let bricks ‘crumbs’ and debris fall through, but the chimney sheep – I tried biggest chimney first – is perfect, so I bought the next size down for another chimney. Definitely do buy an inch or two too big so it wedges in and stays put. And my house stays so warm, no draughts; such a difference.

Was a little tricky to get installed since my damper handle is in the middle. Plug handles unscrew to make it easier to install and position. Very satisfied with purchase.

Stuck this is my chimney and my house is noticeably warmer now. I don’t have a chimney damper and I always felt the draft and my heating bills were outrageous. This helped a lot! There was a tiny section of a few inches in width that this didn’t cover so I cut and stuck a piece of wall insulation in there to compensate and it made a huge difference.

    Very good
So far so good. Had to get bigger size than the chimney size for better fit. Stays in and works well. There is no draught coming through. I reccomend this product.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersThis is my second winter with the Chimney Sheep, and I really like it. It is very easy to insert and to remove. We had to remove the (broken) hinge and handle for our damper, and then it fit snugly. I was concerned it might become loose over time, that the edges would become soft and no longer, but this has not happened. I really like to have a layer of insulation to stop the draft. It's not a total stop (the firebox is still cooler than the room on a cold day), but it's much better than without the Chimney Sheep. Would definitely buy again, but may never need to!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersMuch more easy, convenie
So simple, yet it works. Keeps our old fireplace from drawing in the winter, and has raised the room temp by a degree or so in our lounge according the thermostat since we fitted it. It’s hardy, surviving 2 seasons being pulling out and pushing back up the flue each weekend. Plastic handles aren’t the sturdiest, but a small inconvenience. Much more easy, convenient, with better U-value rating, than the inflatable balloons kicking around.
