I bought this, probably like everyone else, as I was doing a patio and path myself and wanted to work at my own pace and not keep hiring a wacker at 70 a throw each time.
In short, it’s great it compacts MOT TYPE 1 until it’s rock hard.
My only concern even purchasing this is that it wasn’t as good as hired one (which it probably isn’t) but I can see no flaws in the end result.
Another thing is you don’t actually spend hours using it 3-4 ‘passes’ and you’re done.
I sold it on ebay for half the money I paid for it, so all good.
Also there is no alternatives it’s the marvellous Hulk or hiring one at great expense!

Used a few times now and has proved to be do what it says . It’s idea for compacting hard-core like mot type 2 but only In my opinion for walkways and light use , patios etc . I don’t think I’d drive a car on the finished product as I’m certain within a few days it would be sinking as the unit doesn’t have enough weigh to it to compact to the level required for a driveway . Also the cable is quite long and kept having to move it and after a couple of uses had already realised why petrol is better although i was using in quite a narrow space . All in all great piece if kit to own and its saved me a fortune in hire costs as I do most of the work at home myself . If your looking for a patio or a pathway I’d recommend this product but as I said for a driveway I’m not sure it would be enough but I could be wrong .

I have allot to compress and this is doing short work of it. Works perfect and i could not be happier – best if you have someone concentrating on cable and you work then it is so easy. Great for the price and works as intended. Well made, as specified and pictured. Would buy again.

Good value in that it compares well to renting from builders merchant yes some parts are pretty flimsy but as long as you are afraid of adding some duck tape from time to time I suspect most people would find it’s actually easier to manipulate than the ‘pro’ variants. The cable gets in the way of course and it weighs half the expensive petrol versions. BUT it’s cheap and I get to keep it and I’m not building a house just doing some landscaping

Bought this as I didn’t want to spend a fortune. Used it to level 3tonne of hardcore and it did the job pretty well. It took a few more runs over than petrol alternatives. But for a bit of DIY it does the job. The cable is a bit of a pain, but overall very happy with the produc

Used this to level out the ground for a paved driveway and it did the job it was asked to do. Takes a few passes to do a proper job of it but that`s to be expected as it`s not the heaviest one around. Do not try and turn it whilst it`s running and in contact with the ground, as it will simply churn up the area you`ve just flattened.
Slightly regret not having bought the slab plate but I`ll live.

My first project is a 20’10’ garage base, this was a massive help in fisrt compacting the soil, and then the hardcore on top. For the soil it is recommended to lay some tarp down, so the mud doesn’t clog up on the plate. The hardcore was a 2″ lay and after a couple of passes did the job. I have used heavy petrol ones before and always struggle, so I was happy all around with this.

    Reliable and lightweigh

Found this wacker plate nice and light and it very handy you can fold it up , so it can go in my van better , I done couple jobs with type 1 and it did the job very well ,(don’t expect to do over 6 inch off type 1 in one go and you have to go over few more times) , it less noisy and good you don’t have to worry about petrol.
For the price to do small job it very good

    Does the job well

I have enough petrol driven tools and they are a pain to maintain. I went for the electric one as I didnt need anything too heavyweight and its maintenance free. Its still pretty capable and I was able to install 5m x 4m of 100mm hardcore as foundation for my shed using the compactor – just need to lay the hardcore in 25mm layers. I would recommend it for light DIY jobs

I am a little bit worried when I place the order because I am not sure if it will work. The machine arrived quickly with good package and then I tried it immediately after the work. I would say it’s a right purchase. I did my terrace with it and it works well. Great design for DIY and it deserves a 4 star and above.

I’ve been working in my garden and considered renting a compactor plate but I am only doing it on days off and sometimes it might be raining which makes it impossible “clay” so it made sense to invest in this. It does work well, the only issue is the electric cable always in the way but I guess you just learn how to move it out of the way. It does work!

Seriously packs a punch this little thing! Very impressed with it and I would highly recommend! A LOT better than I thought when I opened it up and first saw the size of it (it’s quite small and lightweight), but boy does it do a decent job!! Bit of a pain in the backside having to trail a cable around, but being electric, it is pretty handy no fumes, no petrol costs.

    Overall?. Great purchase!

Is is good for laying thinner hard core for und slabs. Has a few design failures. One the Shakeproof washers on handle don’t hold the nuts. These washers were designed for the Automobile industry in on flat surfaces, the handle is round. I replaced them with spring washers since then no problems. Two how do I wrap the cable? The two little pins are a bit small for the cable supplied. Or is the UK version only supplied with half a metre?
So far it works and was cheaper and more convenient than every three days renting a larger machine. At 26 kg. it’s heavy enough for me. I had hoped as Expat. to have found an excellent machine only the design faults disappoint.

  24. Shilpa says:

I was going to hire one, but all available were far too heavy for me to get back home, or even to manoeuvre when they weren’t running, so an electric one was the alternative. I’m sure others might want the heavier petrol ones but for me, doing just one drive and a path, this worked brilliantly – it’s still very heavy, but perhaps half the weight of a professional wacker, and so takes a little longer, but the result was great. If I sell it on once I’ve completed all foreseeable work, then it will be much cheaper than renting, and I won’t feel that I’ve got to rush to finish either.

I was a little bit skeptical of this. I’ve been doing DIY jobs for years and hiring big petrol whacker plates from a guy up the road. I bought this more out of hope than expectation. I can happily say though, I was proven wrong. You get a decent length of cable with it, so you don’t need an extension 99% of the time. It’s a nice weight – still a one man lift but with enough weight to be effective and it whacks really well. I can’t see myself going back to a petrol for anything but the most heavy-duty job, even then I reckon this will do the job fine. I used it on 6″ hardcore and it went down nicely, then I used it on 50mm block pavers with the optional rubber mat, and it worked a treat. The only caveat is you need to modify the rubber mat to get it to stay on reliably (It slips off if you just fix it with the clamps provided). Otherwise the machine and the mat worked perfectly.

It does exactly what it says on the can. If you compact in layers ive already done a medium size patio and several pathways. Used it to compact earth first then sub base and then quick pass on the sharp sand. was easy in the car…easy to move around…fairly quiet to operate. BUT as almost everyone else says….the handle bolts are useless. Vibrate loose and one off mine cross threaded because the screw tap was poor at the outset….with new handle design perfect for 5 stars.

For a lightweight whacker this is ok. Obviously it won’t have the same effect as a heavier weight version. But it’s fine for regular small size DIY jobs. Just keep an eye on the screws that hold the handle together as they do tend to undo themselves gradually!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBetter than expected, after compacting some MOT 1 I had to remove a bit, I needed an SDS hammer drill to break up the MOT 1. Lighter than a petrol driven one. Overall I didn’t find any difference between this and the petrol one I was hiring for 50 per day, apart from the fact that the petrol whacker plates use a lot of fuel!
Easy to put together, easy to carry with the bars on. Also comes with a decent amount of cable. As for the reviews of the handles coming loose, just really tighten them up good and proper and you should be alright, you can add a little bit of super glue to the thread if need be.

Definitely recommend this if you have a few days of whacking to do.

Great little machine, easy to transport, perfect for small garden projects. I bought this because I was fed up with hire charges for petrol ones which are bulky and they need delivery and collection. Easy to put together, it’s quiet and easy to manoeuvre. Compacted 32m2 in no time at all. Only one issue so far is that the handle did shake loose, obviously I hadn’t tightened the thumb screws enough.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersI bough this as an alternative to hiring. The price meant I could own it instead of having to hire over several weekends which would allow me to take my time (as a DIYer) it made financial sense.
Having now had a chance to use it, I can leave a review.

Building it initially is easy, 4 twist bots and a couple of cable ties and it’s done.

Using it is easy too. It’s one directional so it will ‘walk’ forward only, no reverse, so plan your route and go in a pattern that minimizes tight turns and stopping. Don’t be tempted to just drag it back while it’s still going unless you like the idea of doing the same patch a thousand times, it will dig in and ruin what you just did.

Little and often is the key to success with this machine. It’s not massively heavy (15KG) so don’t go putting 2 foot of base layer down and expect it to cope, build up the sub-base layer at a time and it will be brilliant.

I found a sub-layer or gravel topped with fine shale then sand worked well for a 2 1/2 ton truck.

It’s limitations are to fine compaction, its a vibrating plate not a trench rammer. If you want huge compaction invest more.

It’s really quiet too when it’s running, that surprised me, I thought it would be noisy.

All-in-all I’m impressed with it for the money. I’d read mixed reviews and took a a chance anyway, glad i did. If you’re planning pathways, garden pre-astro-turf laying, driveways or patios, this little plate will serve you well. If you’re building a house or a motorway, spend more and get industrial kit.

I bought this to help with the installation of Gabion baskets and the need to compact an MOT Type 1 base for these to sit on. Given this was a DIY job I didn’t want the hassle of buying or hiring a petrol compactor so decided to take the dive and give this electric version a go.

Wow what a piece of kit – yes it doesn’t have the same compaction power of a petrol but this doesn’t half to do a fantastic job. You will need to make sure you do it in shallow layers (up to 10cm) but the compaction is great as well as its maneuverability. It’s not the lightest piece of equipment but for most people moving it around won’t be too much hassle and the handles on top make this a lot easier.

Unlike other reviews the handle has stayed firm and has only required tightening once after an hours worth of use which given it is attached using screws with knurled knobs isn’t bad at all – ensure the small washers provided are used to give a tighter fitting.

I would certainly recommend this to anyone who doesn’t have any heavy duty requirement for compacting – if you do go and hire a petrol one 🙂

This compacter is great, maneuverability is a bit awkward, also its compacting pressure strength is not ideal so expect to have to help it a bit and have to do some extra passes, but overall, great results for such an inexpensive tool

The cost of this compered with hiring a compactor over two or three weekends for a garden project made this a cost effective alternative. The review asks for a star rating for lightweight not sure what that was meant to mean as it is meant to be heavy and is. It compacted 20 square metres of type one hardcore with ease. After reading the reviews regarding the handles loosening I just put some loctite on the threads and had no problems. It is also very quiet so made it a pleasure to use. Well worth the money if you are planning to use over a extended period of time and of course no petrol and no trying to start a temperamental old petrol engine. Well worth the money and did as good a job as any compactor I have used in the past so don’t be put of because its electric.

Sort of does the job, as a DIYer it has meant that I haven’t had to do the job in one go. Good bits, lightweight (relatively), manoeuvrable, quite (this is more important than you think). Bad bits, not heavy enough to really crush the material, handle keeps shaking off the fasteners.
It has done a job of flattening the MOT for laying artificial grass. I will be able to use it for smaller jobs as well that you wouldn’t go to the expense of hiring a machine for. To sum up ; I would recommend for general preparation (patios, flattening ground, paths, gardens) but not for contractors or for “heavy” driveways. I am happy with the purchase .

Don’t expect to be laying roads with this but great for home use ( patios, paths, ahed bases etc ). Needed one at several different times and this was cheaper and more flexible than repeated hiring. Tighten the handle from time to time as the vibrations can loosen it – though it is pretty obvious when this is happening from extra vibration in handle.

It wasn’t a huge issue for me as I knew to tighten every time I turned off the machine and to keep an eye on it but I can understand that if you were using this all the time, this would be a pain.

I found it easy to use and not to heavy to move about. the only gripe I have is the fact the folding handle has to shorter bolts to fold the top part of the handle without removing them all together.

Son said this is brilliant for flattening. Did job in two minutes! He did not like the foldable handle, so left that off. It is very heavy.

Great for small jobs very quiet takes a bit longer than a petrol wacker but the cost makes it a worth while purchase

I’ve used several wackers over the years and this one stands out because it’s lighter to move around and it always starts. Petrol wackers are great but have a habit of being hard to start.
This machine is lighter so needs more passes to achieve the compaction. It’s great for smaller areas and quickly pays for itself when compared to hiring a petrol one. This was bought for a job where we’d need to do lots of bits of compacting over several weeks. And it scores well in Tools Top Trumps because who else has a wacker? Buy one and win.

So glad I bought this. Really easy to use and more versatile than the one we were going to hire.

Easy to use. LONG CABLE but you’ll need an extension cable…using it to flatten a 4m x 6 m area…absolutely does the job…just got it at lunch time…spent 4 hours and it is just excellent..easy to use..good weight in the plate… look its a compactor so it needs weight…its not a Dyson with a ball its a wacker plate to wack stones and compact the earth..and it does exactly that…75 to hire one for 2 days…its a no brainer..

Easy to use for small jobs but wouldn’t use on large area, would buy a bigger machine… has been fine for me for what I needed it for… & definitely worth the money..

This was superb for being lightweight, as I have a double hernia. I was not looking forward to using a hired whacker plate. I had to do multiple runs but it did the job. As my block paving was set on different levels and different ground shapes it proved easy to manoeuvre. Good for storage as you can dismantle the push handles and noise levels low. Before I bought it I had seen some reviews and comments about how the handle thumbscrews come loose. This was easily resolved by securing tie wraps around the bar and thumbscrew. At the time of my block paving installation the weather was bad, this was another reason for buying, in that I could take my time and work around the weather.

For the price this is a great little tool. I have used it for the base for a patio, a path and to widen my drive (by about 2ft and that bit will seldom have a vehicle on) and it was fine for these small projects.

If I was doing a full drive or anything substantial I would be hiring a heavier ‘meatier’ plate but as I say I knew what I was getting and I’ve already recouped the outlay as I haven’t had to hire for these three jobs.

One thing is driving me crackers though – and loads of folk have said the same in their reviews – but the bolts holding the handles together vibrate out in seconds! It drives me mad, why would you design this into a vibrating plate? I have now started using gorilla tape to tape them in place but this is a faff I could do without!

Other than that though I am very happy with it.

In general a very good piece of equipment, take time putting it together and regularly check it over and it seems to cope with most jobs, don’t expect to be able to lay a road, put paths, patios etc perfectly capable.

Great, cheaper than hiring one too often, works well. Handles come loose but can work around as u have to stop every so often to untangle yourself from the cable. Quiet and effective, worked well on my drive

It is light enough to be manoeuvred easily but heavy enough to compact. It is not as heavy as the petrol ones so compaction must be made with thinner layers but it does an excellent job and well worth it if you are going to need for a long period of time. The only issue is the screws securing the handles vibrate loose so you need to periodically check and tighten them. Even loctite does not prevent completely this occurring. Overall as easy to operate and manoeuvre as a lawn mower but compacts well more so at the fro

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersL’appareil m’a servi compacter du concass recouvrant une alle.

I have previously hired ‘Wacker Plates’ but as I have a large project that would require multiple hiring, it was cost effective to buy this product. It is every bit as powerful as anything I have previously hired and is a doddle to use. It weighs in at 26KG but is easy to manoeuvre.
Out of the box, it took about 3 minutes to set up. Basically it is just the two part handle frame to assemble and the power cord to secure.
It is quiet and very easy on your hands and joints. There is a risk of RSI with prolonged use, but the vibration is sufficiently dampened at the hand grip to mitigate this risk under normal usage. The instructions warn that 8 hours is the maximum daily usage limit. I have no doubt the product would be up to that, but I physically couldn’t.
    Would recommend
