his was bought as a replacement for the Charles my daughter has had for 25+ years
I find this rather heavy going. The suction is so strong it makes the actual process of vacuuming carpets rather laboured. It’s not all bad and for the price it’s excellent value.
Fab cleaner just a bit heavy and big for the house so always in view
Good vacum but, overal is medium comfortable to use. Cable is long This plus But You must layhim on top of the vac
I only have one criticism and that is that there isn’t a retractable power cable and neither is there a convenient way of storing the cable so it does get tangled up all the time.
Great hoover. A bit heavy but does a great job. Long lead so can get around rooms with ease.
Super machine. I use it for cleaning a school in evenings. Definitely too noisy for use during the day (compared to Henry for instance). Amazing suction, it’s even picked up ingrained glitter stuck in carpet since every Christmas ever!
I would def recommend for commercial use. Haven’t used wet function yet but have Numatic ever let me down.. no.
Fab product.
Ordered this as it’s made in Britain. Good solid construction. Used it a small amount but purchased it for a bigger job about to start. If I want to be picky few more tools would be nice but has every thing needed for every day use.
Recommended.
Good for wet and dry. Incredible suction. Easy to put together. Floor, carpet hasn’t been so clean in years.
But, the one problem in an almost perfect machine is that the attachments fall off too easily. It’s not much more than a slight annoyance for myself but I can see this being quite a major drawback for a person who has mobility issues, having to bend down and pick up and put the ends of the hoover together (at worst) several times in a cleaning session.
Replacement for more expensive product which was not suitable for office cleaning.
Great vacuum for wet an dry does exactly what its supposed to do with out any hussle or problem really easy to use an its comfortable while your doing a hard days job so i would highly recommend it if your going for a more expensive vacuum but its worth every penny.
Bought it for my shed to clean up sawdust etc Seems fine If it lasts as long as my Henry we use in the house I will be well pleased
I needed a decent hoover for cleaning holiday homes, happy with product. Great suction, only downside is the weight when carrying up stairs.
Absolutely love this vacuum cleaner, easy to use and great suction. Definitely would recommend.
I purchased this to use the wet function more than anything. I wanted to suck up excess water after manually shampooing my carpets. (I’ve had carpet shampooers and they are all useless) Anyhoo, I used the dry, normal vacuum function and OMG! It nearly sucked the carpet off the gripper rods. I did have the tiny cleaning head on at the time so I changed it for the larger one and it was still super strong. Excellent for getting up cat hair, much better than my Dyson animal and a third of the cost.
Having a taller bucket and the motor being in his shiny black hat, could cause instability but Charlies base is extended and thats where the tools can be stored, with a slot that caters for the main hose and pipe – see photo – theres a hook that the cable can be put on once coiled although some people wrap it around the lid.
Before the original Henry was released in 1981, i used to have a VAX the iconic Orange and Black that was also a carpet cleaner and its problem was being top heavy – it used to fall over – The extended base on Charles ensures he is really stable when being pulled around so no falling over. He is really really light – and having had a Basil for 25+ years – the aluminium pipes on Charles rather than steel – make using Charles really easy.
As with all of the Numatic family – Henry and all his relatives, including Charles, have a great simplistic set up – the multiple section pipes make removing any blockage really easy.- lego bricks in particular have a habit of getting stuck in any vacuum cleaner.
The long black pipe is also easy to unblock because it just unscrews and is straight – and even the internal connector is easy to access.
Using a dustbag for regular vacuuming, ensures longevity with the motor – without the dustbag, rubble, wood chips from DIY etc are vacuumed up easily – which is why these machines are so popular with self employed builders.
I have the Hairo attachment – which is great not only for pet hairs because it has a rotating brush powered by the force of air sucked into the attachment… but being smaller its great in lots of awkward to get at places.
The rise of using rugs with hardwood floors, is where Charlies wet vacuuming is great – no need to wait for the sun to shine so you can dry them outside – because you can get so much water out with Charles – they dry inside really quickly….
If Charles is still going strong in 27 years, like my Basil who ive given to my son – then the 149 is very good value (5.51 per year).
Numatic also sell parts so that every model dating back to the first ever made can be repaired – so for our more eco conscious times theres less to go to landfill.
Pros: Fantastic suction power, lots of space to get plenty of dirt up between emptying, never seems to get clogged, and actually does work well with water.
Cons: Not really a complete con, but instead of a retracting power cable like the listing advertises, it has a reinforced power cable instead. A bit more of a fuss when getting it out & putting it away in exchange for a little extra durability.
More powerful motor than Henry.Great addition to the family . Only grumble I miss the cable winder so it is neatly stored in the machine . But other wise a great machine.
To use to remove water is ok
To use to hovering only problem take to much rubbish and block but you can clean and back to work ok
good to have a simple vac that works. only issue I have is having to change the bag for the water element when going from dry to wet.
I haven’t yet used the wet setting on this vacuum however, the dry setting is incredible, the suction is extremely powerful and it leaves carpets looking lovely and clean! Only down side is that the Hoover itself is quite heavy and as well it is very noisy.
Like how good it is with cleaning anything wet or dry but the power lead could have been a bit longe
This is a great Hoover and it does, wet and dry.
This Henry Hoover is very effective, the suction is excellent and it’s versatility to clear up wet spills too adds to its attraction. Downsides include its heaviness and the lack of ability to easily wind up the cord.
Cheaper anc better than any other hoover we have .fantastic c value fore money super powerful and light to move about and the big plus hovers wet and dry
Due to EU legislation a vacuum cleaner can only have a 620 watt motor, Charles is a wet/dry vacuum so it can have a more powerful motor. This was bought to replace a Henry vacuum cleaner which finally expired after 35 years. I cannot recommend the brand high enough.
Great suction and plenty of on board tools. Very long lead.
The new Charles is almost as good as the old Henry. Suction and cleaning power is good, design basically the same. Only complaint is that the cable does not coil up inside like it used to.
Again like my original Henry a cracking hoover. It’s a shame the cord doesn’t retract inside like the Henry or ide have given 5 stars
Love Charles, he’s not the best Hoover I’ve ever had, but he’s a workhorse and is the only man who follows me devotedly without complaining and is useful at the same time
A good powerful robust vacuum cleaner. Great in wet mode for vacuuming water off scrubbed floors. Bags and filters are not expensive. It’s just a bit heavy for carrying up stairs
Charles “Chuck” is an amazing addition to our household tools. He has helped decorate some rooms, cleanup after muddy dogs, and hoover the family car. Very easy to use and wheel around.
I wanted a vacuum for my garage, it had to be able to take a lot of hard work. The boss would not let me use the house cleaner!!
Henry Charles arrived on time and after the initial introduction I set him to work. He was manoeuvreable and I like how the tools were displayed. However I was disappointed in his suck. I looked down the tube to see if anything was stuck but all was clear.
I will get use to his limitations but he will still have to work hard.
Excellent Hoover , bigger and more powerful than my previous Henry hoover .
Great purchase for cleaning out my stove and for cleaning up After Reginald the Bulldog .
I have not used the WET function yet…will report on that and give an update on the functionality in a few months.
Bet you can’t wait dear reader.
What a machine its so powerful it could literally suck wallpaper off the walls!!
Long term fan of Dyson (V8, V10 and ball + hair driers), but when the V10 attachment broke, they wanted 120 to replace?! So we thought we’d give Charles a go.
Don’t let the friendly face fool you – in action, the fella’s absolutely savage. Don’t treat this as a Dyson – just because it goes up to “11” doesn’t mean you need all of the power, all of the time. It’s ok to open the inlet – if you don’t, be prepared for a work out.
Charles is simple – it’s a bucket, a hose and a motor. There’s no fancy batteries or LCD displays. What it does, it does without frills. The attachments are solid with minimal moving parts, but not bulky. The attachments are plastic – but the heavy duty sort – if they break, it’s ~10 to replace. The cable is very long, and so is the hose.
It’s chunky, solid and simple – the Yorkie bar of hoovers.
Note for folks with IT – operate with extreme caution – I’d stick with “lesser” machines. It will pull key caps and rip cables.
This Henry has bee excellent for a post building work clean. It is a little heavy to lug around but it has a good selection of attachments which are both powerful to suck up the dirt and gentle enough to not damage anything. I would recommend having this as main house hoover.
Is very durable,
Can utilise a HEPA filter or HEPA bag,
Has a small footprint for the van,
Can vacuum leaks when plumbing,
Can handle plaster and concrete dust,
Easy to repair when things go wrong,
Can vacuum rubble without blockages,
The Charles vacuum ticks all the right boxes for the above.
I found vacuuming plaster dust with our home vacuum (Shark) to be troublesome as the vacuum filters blocked within minutes. The plaster dust is so fine that some bypassed the vacuums filter entirely and will later on damage the appliance.
Charles comes with HEPA bags and extras are easily purchased.
I sanded a full 4m x 2.4m wall using a Makita rotary sander, Charles ate the lot.
I removed the HEPA bag and threw it in the skip and no dust was seen at all. He also attached straight on to the sander.
I have also used Charles to vacuum out a blocked shower before working on the waste pipe. Indispensable piece of equipment for me.
Highly rated.
Surprised at how light and easy to use this hoover is
Suction better than my last Henry. Only 4 stars for ease of use, because you have to wind up the flex yourself, can get a bit tangled. Apart from that SUPERB.
Power is good, strong enough. But it is quite heavy and BIG!
Don’t t expect need to change parts for wet and dry. I though 1 machine with 2 functions should not need consumers to change the parts.
Bought as a replacement for an upright vacuum cleaner, such an upgrade. The cleaning tips fit well in all the corners, suction power is great.
Best vaccum I every bought, will stick with any Henry, would definitely recommend
Numatic cleaners nust keep on going. Ever blinked once on good robust cleaners.
Charles Oh Charles, I love you so much I can’t ever see a day when you will let me down because you are just so simple , I love you so much and you just work without bagless turbo chamber cyclone technology orwhatever , you are just you , a vacuum that actually works , I love you Charles x Where have you been all my life?
An update12/10/20 and a blocked sink , Charles is there nothing you cannot do ? You unblocked the sink in wet mode effortlessly and now it drains better than ever , I love you xx , My greyhounds love you too and keep taking you tools and chewing them so I do hope replacements are available , if not replacement tools then replacement Greyhounds please , Charles you clean my flagstone floors and you are the best vacuum I’ve ever owned , Ive had all the other makes but you are the best , I love you xx
Very good we use for messy plumbing jobs sucks up water nicely
Great suction and accessories.
A bit heavy to lift but wheels around freely.
Would have liked a cord rewinder as the little hook for the power cord is flimsy.
This is the BEST Hoover I have ever found.
It is just perfect for every job.
Very powerful & never stops.
( you have tried the rest… Now try the BEST).
You get a lot of vacuum cleaner for your money. Does the job well. Would recommend to anyone.
This vacuum is super. The suction is great. It’s easy to use and does its job fabulously. The Floor space in my carpet shop is in constant need of tidying up. It is easily faster than any other vacuum I have used to do it’s job. It’s a little bit cumbersome but makes up for it by the volume of debris it picks up.
Used this machine for many years as a plumber fantastic
That only takes 9 litres wet. Like easy light pull to move
I bought it for a house renovation. It doesn’t care what I sucked up with it: concrete dust, woodchips, nails, sawdust, pebbles, etc. Wet suction is incredibly useful when it comes to plumbing works.
Excellent vacuum, not exactly lightweight but it is a big vacuum.
The only downside is the plastic pipe come away (broke) from the solid pipe – but amazon replaced no problem
Works very well BUT no cable rewind, stops it being near perfec
This the first “Henry” style vacuum I have owned my previous being a Dyson, and I am impressed! It has amazing suction and even lifts the carpet so it deep cleans. We bought this because we have dogs and cats and easily deals with the hair. If there was any negative point that would be it’s big especially when doing stairs but not really an issue!
The power it has is quite surprising! Mine tried to hoover up the carpet, and the rug in the main living room! It did pick up all sorts of things – loose stones that had been walked into the house were no problem. a good test of a vacuum is to take the Floor fitting off of the hose and put the open end of the hose against the ceiling. It should hold the weight of the hose easliy, and this one does that and is quite a yank to remove. Highly pleased with “Charles” and though I have yet to have a need to use him in “Wet” mode, but I assume that he will perform as well in that mode as he does in “Dry”
In terms of dry vacuum, this has much better suction power than Henry.
In terms of wet vacuum, suction power is on par with German brands (Bosch & Karcher), but it is much more easier to lock and unlock the motor.
Great vacuum but it get full quick on the water side only 15L so only on for 10 seconds then its full, really good suction and easy to use
even though i bought an industrial hendry , i work with this at work and thought for the little extra. the better .
Sucks well. Wet or dry. Best hoovers ever made with a face
Great product, very powerful and has a good range of versatile tools
Love it. Great hoover and great price. Would recommend. Can lift the carpet off the floor if you want too
