good buy
his was bought as a replacement for the Charles my daughter has had for 25+ years
Extremely powerful
I find this rather heavy going. The suction is so strong it makes the actual process of vacuuming carpets rather laboured. It’s not all bad and for the price it’s excellent value.
Cousin of henry
Fab cleaner just a bit heavy and big for the house so always in view
You can’t wind the cord up like the original Henry’s. It’s just loose. You can wrap it around the whole unit but it’s not as nice
Good
Good vacum but, overal is medium comfortable to use. Cable is long This plus But You must layhim on top of the vac
As far as vacuuming goes Charles is great on dry and wet I was especially impressed with the ability to suck up water.
I only have one criticism and that is that there isn’t a retractable power cable and neither is there a convenient way of storing the cable so it does get tangled up all the time.
Already had a hetty & had it for 10 years plus & still working fine . I wanted a hoover to pick up water so brought the Charles am really pleased with it was worried when picking up water how would I know it was full but it stops sucking automatically so that’s good I’ve only used to empty the last bit of water out of a pool so far but I’m happy with it & hopefully it last as long as hetty which is still going strong
Attracted that this is made in Britain, we bought one. High quality materials, comstruction and instructions. Extremely powerful motor, picks up very well without fuss or gimmicks. Only negative is absence of cable tidy but it can just be wrapped around the machine. Well recommended.
So easy to change from dry to wet and back. Suction so strong I think I could pluck my eyebrows with it (might need a different attachment). For many years I shunned Henry hoovers because I didn’t like the smiley face. What a fool. Love it.
Best hoove
Great hoover. A bit heavy but does a great job. Long lead so can get around rooms with ease.
Fantastic but noisy
Super machine. I use it for cleaning a school in evenings. Definitely too noisy for use during the day (compared to Henry for instance). Amazing suction, it’s even picked up ingrained glitter stuck in carpet since every Christmas ever!
I would def recommend for commercial use. Haven’t used wet function yet but have Numatic ever let me down.. no.
Fab product.
This is basically our rough jobs vac because Charles is no flyweight! My husband uses it in the workshop, we clean the car with it, etc. I agree with other reviewers that he’s up to any job, but I have to say there’s one thing he doesn’t like dead leaves! Hubby decided to vacuum the garage on Charles’ arrival, but the leaves in the corners blocked the tube. Nothing else gave Charlie Boy any trouble and I’m sure he’ll stand up to a fair amount of abuse. As a “shop vac” should. One star deducted for lack of flex winder.
Good suction.
Ordered this as it’s made in Britain. Good solid construction. Used it a small amount but purchased it for a bigger job about to start. If I want to be picky few more tools would be nice but has every thing needed for every day use.
Recommended.
Excellent Hoover. Almost perfect. Attachments a tad loose.
Good for wet and dry. Incredible suction. Easy to put together. Floor, carpet hasn’t been so clean in years.
But, the one problem in an almost perfect machine is that the attachments fall off too easily. It’s not much more than a slight annoyance for myself but I can see this being quite a major drawback for a person who has mobility issues, having to bend down and pick up and put the ends of the hoover together (at worst) several times in a cleaning session.
Simple and effective
Replacement for more expensive product which was not suitable for office cleaning.
Great vacuum i love charles more than i did henrry
Great vacuum for wet an dry does exactly what its supposed to do with out any hussle or problem really easy to use an its comfortable while your doing a hard days job so i would highly recommend it if your going for a more expensive vacuum but its worth every penny.
Reliability
Bought it for my shed to clean up sawdust etc Seems fine If it lasts as long as my Henry we use in the house I will be well pleased
Quality hoove
I needed a decent hoover for cleaning holiday homes, happy with product. Great suction, only downside is the weight when carrying up stairs.
Fantastic vacuum cleane
Absolutely love this vacuum cleaner, easy to use and great suction. Definitely would recommend.
Wow! Better suction than a Dyso
I purchased this to use the wet function more than anything. I wanted to suck up excess water after manually shampooing my carpets. (I’ve had carpet shampooers and they are all useless) Anyhoo, I used the dry, normal vacuum function and OMG! It nearly sucked the carpet off the gripper rods. I did have the tiny cleaning head on at the time so I changed it for the larger one and it was still super strong. Excellent for getting up cat hair, much better than my Dyson animal and a third of the cost.
First thing i want to do is clear up confusion about Charlies specs – different sellers giving different descriptions so i checked with Numatic directly – He is made in the UK – some of the parts may be sourced elsewhere but hes built in Chard, Somerset. He is 1060watts and his pipes/tubes are aluminium and painted grey. As a dry vacuum he has 15 litre capacity and as a wet vacuum he has 9 litres capacity – he is a wet *or* dry vacuum only. Dust bags are available and some were included in the box along with various attachments – some for making dry vacuuming easier others for wet vacuuming – the Numatic ref for the attachments is kit A21A.
Having a taller bucket and the motor being in his shiny black hat, could cause instability but Charlies base is extended and thats where the tools can be stored, with a slot that caters for the main hose and pipe – see photo – theres a hook that the cable can be put on once coiled although some people wrap it around the lid.
Before the original Henry was released in 1981, i used to have a VAX the iconic Orange and Black that was also a carpet cleaner and its problem was being top heavy – it used to fall over – The extended base on Charles ensures he is really stable when being pulled around so no falling over. He is really really light – and having had a Basil for 25+ years – the aluminium pipes on Charles rather than steel – make using Charles really easy.
As with all of the Numatic family – Henry and all his relatives, including Charles, have a great simplistic set up – the multiple section pipes make removing any blockage really easy.- lego bricks in particular have a habit of getting stuck in any vacuum cleaner.
The long black pipe is also easy to unblock because it just unscrews and is straight – and even the internal connector is easy to access.
Using a dustbag for regular vacuuming, ensures longevity with the motor – without the dustbag, rubble, wood chips from DIY etc are vacuumed up easily – which is why these machines are so popular with self employed builders.
I have the Hairo attachment – which is great not only for pet hairs because it has a rotating brush powered by the force of air sucked into the attachment… but being smaller its great in lots of awkward to get at places.
The rise of using rugs with hardwood floors, is where Charlies wet vacuuming is great – no need to wait for the sun to shine so you can dry them outside – because you can get so much water out with Charles – they dry inside really quickly….
If Charles is still going strong in 27 years, like my Basil who ive given to my son – then the 149 is very good value (5.51 per year).
Numatic also sell parts so that every model dating back to the first ever made can be repaired – so for our more eco conscious times theres less to go to landfill.
Very powerful, and actually works well with wate
Pros: Fantastic suction power, lots of space to get plenty of dirt up between emptying, never seems to get clogged, and actually does work well with water.
Cons: Not really a complete con, but instead of a retracting power cable like the listing advertises, it has a reinforced power cable instead. A bit more of a fuss when getting it out & putting it away in exchange for a little extra durability.
More powerful than Dyso
In my experience this is way more powerful than my old Dyson,
Attachments are very useful and the unit is very light.
Not tested the wet function yet but I don’t doubt it will work fine based on other reviews.
Only downside is that Charles can’t store the cable in his head like Henry!
Ideal for boat life being wet and dry !
More powerful motor than Henry.Great addition to the family . Only grumble I miss the cable winder so it is neatly stored in the machine . But other wise a great machine.
Work
To use to remove water is ok
To use to hovering only problem take to much rubbish and block but you can clean and back to work ok
I like it in comparison the some of the costly brands
good to have a simple vac that works. only issue I have is having to change the bag for the water element when going from dry to wet.
Great Hoove
I haven’t yet used the wet setting on this vacuum however, the dry setting is incredible, the suction is extremely powerful and it leaves carpets looking lovely and clean! Only down side is that the Hoover itself is quite heavy and as well it is very noisy.
Brillia
Like how good it is with cleaning anything wet or dry but the power lead could have been a bit longe
Power in your hand
This is a great Hoover and it does, wet and dry.
Efficient and effective
This Henry Hoover is very effective, the suction is excellent and it’s versatility to clear up wet spills too adds to its attraction. Downsides include its heaviness and the lack of ability to easily wind up the cord.
The Charles Henry is the bes
Cheaper anc better than any other hoover we have .fantastic c value fore money super powerful and light to move about and the big plus hovers wet and dry
Has more power/suctio
Due to EU legislation a vacuum cleaner can only have a 620 watt motor, Charles is a wet/dry vacuum so it can have a more powerful motor. This was bought to replace a Henry vacuum cleaner which finally expired after 35 years. I cannot recommend the brand high enough.
Great powerful suctio
Great suction and plenty of on board tools. Very long lead.
Easy to move.
I like this vacuum because it’s easy to move around, because of the wheels.
It has good suction, tools to use on different surfaces, a long cable and hose.
I haven’t used the wet version but the change over is easy. It was a good buy.
As expected
The new Charles is almost as good as the old Henry. Suction and cleaning power is good, design basically the same. Only complaint is that the cable does not coil up inside like it used to.
I used this today for the first time. We had a smell kitchen and I realised we needed to clear the pipes. I weighed up the cost of a plumber call out and the cost of “Charles” and bought one. It has cleared a mass of muck from the pipes and drains associated with the kitchen. Then took it to clear the wash basin and bath. It picked up a whole load of hair that various drain cleaners hadn’t touched with its brilliant suction. Brilliant machine and worth the cost of calling the plumbers out twice. Recommended. It is sturdy and stable which is what put us off about several of the cheaper machines – so this is worth the extra.
Good hoove
Again like my original Henry a cracking hoover. It’s a shame the cord doesn’t retract inside like the Henry or ide have given 5 stars
Works and doesn’t complain 😁
Love Charles, he’s not the best Hoover I’ve ever had, but he’s a workhorse and is the only man who follows me devotedly without complaining and is useful at the same time
Great vacuum cleaner but a bit on the heavy side
A good powerful robust vacuum cleaner. Great in wet mode for vacuuming water off scrubbed floors. Bags and filters are not expensive. It’s just a bit heavy for carrying up stairs
Can hoover anything!
Charles “Chuck” is an amazing addition to our household tools. He has helped decorate some rooms, cleanup after muddy dogs, and hoover the family car. Very easy to use and wheel around.
Poor suck!!
I wanted a vacuum for my garage, it had to be able to take a lot of hard work. The boss would not let me use the house cleaner!!
Henry Charles arrived on time and after the initial introduction I set him to work. He was manoeuvreable and I like how the tools were displayed. However I was disappointed in his suck. I looked down the tube to see if anything was stuck but all was clear.
I will get use to his limitations but he will still have to work hard.
Charles is a worthy upgrade !
Excellent Hoover , bigger and more powerful than my previous Henry hoover .
Great purchase for cleaning out my stove and for cleaning up After Reginald the Bulldog .
Yes you read it here ! This vacuum cleaner actually picks up pet hair and Christmas tree needles. It even effortlessly cleans the nylon dirt magnet hearth rug which clings greedily to anything that lands on it and my previous two machines were hopeless at removing crud from. Wish I had discovered this machine years ago. Yes it is big but then the the huge amount of lead means you don’t have to constantly unplug it and the long flexible and metal tube combination means you can reach stairs from either end easily.
I have not used the WET function yet…will report on that and give an update on the functionality in a few months.
Bet you can’t wait dear reader.
Very good suction power.
I liked the power of this machine very good suction compared to the cordless one I had before no having to rush around to finish before the battery ran out.I’ve not used the wet suction but it’s there if ever I need it would recommend well pleased.
Amazing bit of ki
What a machine its so powerful it could literally suck wallpaper off the walls!!
Bought as a backup for the next kitchen flood due to heavy rain – living in Brittany it rains a lot this time of year. Used when it flooded again – absolutely brilliant – left me with a dry floor. Good investment.
Replaced my rubbish suctionless overpriced Dyson with this gem. Love it, excellent suction has wet and dry modes. Bags are great – no more pulling out all manner of nasty dirt from the Dyson by hand. Excellent highly recommend. Numeric are great. Very easy to use.
Initial impressions only.
Long term fan of Dyson (V8, V10 and ball + hair driers), but when the V10 attachment broke, they wanted 120 to replace?! So we thought we’d give Charles a go.
Don’t let the friendly face fool you – in action, the fella’s absolutely savage. Don’t treat this as a Dyson – just because it goes up to “11” doesn’t mean you need all of the power, all of the time. It’s ok to open the inlet – if you don’t, be prepared for a work out.
Charles is simple – it’s a bucket, a hose and a motor. There’s no fancy batteries or LCD displays. What it does, it does without frills. The attachments are solid with minimal moving parts, but not bulky. The attachments are plastic – but the heavy duty sort – if they break, it’s ~10 to replace. The cable is very long, and so is the hose.
It’s chunky, solid and simple – the Yorkie bar of hoovers.
Note for folks with IT – operate with extreme caution – I’d stick with “lesser” machines. It will pull key caps and rip cables.
Easy to use & powerful
This Henry has bee excellent for a post building work clean. It is a little heavy to lug around but it has a good selection of attachments which are both powerful to suck up the dirt and gentle enough to not damage anything. I would recommend having this as main house hoover.
Good quality and value for money.
Possibly best value for money Henry hoover. Not too heavy and easy to move despite the size. Sturdy construction and very good suction. You can also use for liquids. For the price one of the best in the market.
As a Heating Engineer/Plumber and also a general DIY’er, it is important to have a vacuum that is;
Is very durable,
Can utilise a HEPA filter or HEPA bag,
Has a small footprint for the van,
Can vacuum leaks when plumbing,
Can handle plaster and concrete dust,
Easy to repair when things go wrong,
Can vacuum rubble without blockages,
The Charles vacuum ticks all the right boxes for the above.
I found vacuuming plaster dust with our home vacuum (Shark) to be troublesome as the vacuum filters blocked within minutes. The plaster dust is so fine that some bypassed the vacuums filter entirely and will later on damage the appliance.
Charles comes with HEPA bags and extras are easily purchased.
I sanded a full 4m x 2.4m wall using a Makita rotary sander, Charles ate the lot.
I removed the HEPA bag and threw it in the skip and no dust was seen at all. He also attached straight on to the sander.
I have also used Charles to vacuum out a blocked shower before working on the waste pipe. Indispensable piece of equipment for me.
Highly rated.
Brilliant hoove
Surprised at how light and easy to use this hoover is
All the tools attach to the machine, no hunting around in the cupboard for them
Suction better than my last Henry. Only 4 stars for ease of use, because you have to wind up the flex yourself, can get a bit tangled. Apart from that SUPERB.
Strong powe
Power is good, strong enough. But it is quite heavy and BIG!
Don’t t expect need to change parts for wet and dry. I though 1 machine with 2 functions should not need consumers to change the parts.
Surprisingly good.
Bought as a replacement for an upright vacuum cleaner, such an upgrade. The cleaning tips fit well in all the corners, suction power is great.
Very happy
Best vaccum I every bought, will stick with any Henry, would definitely recommend
On and on.
Numatic cleaners nust keep on going. Ever blinked once on good robust cleaners.
How did I ever live without you
Charles Oh Charles, I love you so much I can’t ever see a day when you will let me down because you are just so simple , I love you so much and you just work without bagless turbo chamber cyclone technology orwhatever , you are just you , a vacuum that actually works , I love you Charles x Where have you been all my life?
An update12/10/20 and a blocked sink , Charles is there nothing you cannot do ? You unblocked the sink in wet mode effortlessly and now it drains better than ever , I love you xx , My greyhounds love you too and keep taking you tools and chewing them so I do hope replacements are available , if not replacement tools then replacement Greyhounds please , Charles you clean my flagstone floors and you are the best vacuum I’ve ever owned , Ive had all the other makes but you are the best , I love you xx
Top quality
Very good we use for messy plumbing jobs sucks up water nicely
Couldn’t buy a better cleaner and for such a good price too
Bought this vacuum for my daughter and her partner and was very impressed by it. They have gone through 3 cordless machines in under 2 years because they used them to clean out their guinea pigs pen and the hoovers couldn’t cope with all the straw and things. Also they have a Newfie puppy which moults like crazy and the hair sticks to everything. None of this has been a problem for Charles as he can suck up anything without any blockage at all. The best little vacuum cleaner ever and he looks cute too. I shall be buying myself one too
Great sucker, very strong
Great suction and accessories.
A bit heavy to lift but wheels around freely.
Would have liked a cord rewinder as the little hook for the power cord is flimsy.
The BEST...
This is the BEST Hoover I have ever found.
It is just perfect for every job.
Very powerful & never stops.
( you have tried the rest… Now try the BEST).
I had the Henry vaccum before this but liked the idea of the wet cleaning facility this model has. All pretty much as the Henry is in terms of suction power and accessories. The only disappointment was that, when finished, on the Charles you have to coil the lead up yourself around the circumference whereas with the Henry you just wind it up and watch it coil up inside the dome very tidily.
Bought Charles to replace an aging Lavor vac used for DIY and workshop cleaning. Charles seems well built and is very easy to get working with almost no assembly. Suction is good, picks up brick and cement fragments and chunks no problem. Does a good job on fine dust like plaster too. Wet suction is strong, I used Charles to drain part of a heating system and he worked a treat. The supplied bags are great, strong and a decent size, no punctures or rips even after sucking up a few nails!
The niggles are that there is no cord rewind like on Henry. This leaves you with having to wind the generous cord around Charles’ neck which is a faff. Also the wet switch over requires you to put in a disk and overflo prevention attachment which could I think have been designed to be permanent.
Apart from those, Charles seems like a quality vac up for the more rugged work.
a very good purchase
You get a lot of vacuum cleaner for your money. Does the job well. Would recommend to anyone.
Well worth it.
This vacuum is super. The suction is great. It’s easy to use and does its job fabulously. The Floor space in my carpet shop is in constant need of tidying up. It is easily faster than any other vacuum I have used to do it’s job. It’s a little bit cumbersome but makes up for it by the volume of debris it picks up.
Very diverse
Used this machine for many years as a plumber fantastic
Good abilty to get into corners i.e stairs
That only takes 9 litres wet. Like easy light pull to move
can take a lot of abuse
I bought it for a house renovation. It doesn’t care what I sucked up with it: concrete dust, woodchips, nails, sawdust, pebbles, etc. Wet suction is incredibly useful when it comes to plumbing works.
Awesome vacuum cleane
Charles is awesome. I use this for DIY type jobs and Charles sucks up everything. Works best when the bag isn’t too full, the suction is great for sawdust and plaster dust etc.
Used as a wet vac he is great for sucking the water out of pipes if you need to solder new joints into existing pipework.
Excellent vacuum
Excellent vacuum, not exactly lightweight but it is a big vacuum.
The only downside is the plastic pipe come away (broke) from the solid pipe – but amazon replaced no problem
Great use as a dry vacuum
Excellent suction.. As described by a review I read before purchase. Very easy to use. Only minor issue is cable does not have anywhere to hold in place securely, like Henry or Hetty. A great replacement for my poor Hetty that gave up after 15years of loyal service.
…and 3 cheers for Charles! Another simply brilliant and brilliantly simple machine from Numatic. I have had ideas floating about in my head for a couple of weeks; cleaning ash out of the woodburning stoves, and the difficulties of washing a 300 year old stone floor (not even remotely smooth) in a cottage where wellies don’t necessarily get left at the back door. This fills in the gaps left by the Henry I already have. It comes complete with a set of tools (not made altogether clear in the description) which includes a handy and efficient floor tool with a sort of double squeegee which would be really good on normal smooth floors, but which I shall be surprised if I don’t have to replace regularly on my rough ones. Very good for cleaning out the shower drain without bending or groping about. Having had, in the past, Dyson, Hoover and Vax machines, this is my third Henry, and I would always choose them again.
Good
Works very well BUT no cable rewind, stops it being near perfec
Great Vacuum
This the first “Henry” style vacuum I have owned my previous being a Dyson, and I am impressed! It has amazing suction and even lifts the carpet so it deep cleans. We bought this because we have dogs and cats and easily deals with the hair. If there was any negative point that would be it’s big especially when doing stairs but not really an issue!
I love this vacuum – no idea why I didn’t have one years ago! I haven’t tried the wet pick-up yet but the dry function is fantastic, especially with picking up our dog hairs. The suction is very powerful but not too noisy. Easily wheeled about but not too heavy to carry either. I wouldn’t want to take it up and downstairs as it is quite chunky but perfect if on the level. Huge capacity in the bags so they will last a while. I actually bought it for vacuuming our artificial lawn when the laburnum has shed but I use it just as much indoors now. Great length to the hose so has a really good reach to vacuum the wooden blinds. Tools stored easily and well around the base of the vacuum. Love it!
Good suctio
We have had building work done at home, which has left terrible dust everywhere, this has broken one hoover and clogged up my dyson which then needed a full clean out. The Henry Charles was up to the job, my husband uses it as I find it a bit cumbersome but it really works well.
Setting up was really easy, cos the manual showed each process in detail. You have to take the wet function filter out, as it is shipped with this in place. place a bag inside, making sure the fitting is firmly over the input nozzle, and then add the dust filter (loose in the box) replace the lid and Charles is ready to go. Screw the hose in place, choose your fitting for the job in hand and plug in.
The power it has is quite surprising! Mine tried to hoover up the carpet, and the rug in the main living room! It did pick up all sorts of things – loose stones that had been walked into the house were no problem. a good test of a vacuum is to take the Floor fitting off of the hose and put the open end of the hose against the ceiling. It should hold the weight of the hose easliy, and this one does that and is quite a yank to remove. Highly pleased with “Charles” and though I have yet to have a need to use him in “Wet” mode, but I assume that he will perform as well in that mode as he does in “Dry”
Very good dry and wet vacuum at a reasonable price
In terms of dry vacuum, this has much better suction power than Henry.
In terms of wet vacuum, suction power is on par with German brands (Bosch & Karcher), but it is much more easier to lock and unlock the motor.
Good vacuum
Great vacuum but it get full quick on the water side only 15L so only on for 10 seconds then its full, really good suction and easy to use
amazing hoove
even though i bought an industrial hendry , i work with this at work and thought for the little extra. the better .
Nothing sucks like a Charles
Sucks well. Wet or dry. Best hoovers ever made with a face
Amazing suction and long lead.
This is an amazing hoover,it may not be cordless but it has such a long lead that i only ever plug it in once and it does all the down stairs without unplugging. The long nozzle means it can reach up high for your lights ect. We only have a small porch and it sits very nicely in it under the coats. We love charles.
Great produc
Great product, very powerful and has a good range of versatile tools
Great Hoove
Love it. Great hoover and great price. Would recommend. Can lift the carpet off the floor if you want too
Best Hoover ever!
I was doing a lot of demolition works and this Hoover sucked up every particle. The Hoover comes with lots of attachments – I’m very pleased with this purchase.
he perfect hoover.
Perfect hoover! Previously had a Henry and that was a good hoover but Charles is perfect good suction! We’re renovating our home and it’s getting all the dust bits of plaster up without any problem! Great buy!
absorbs wate
Good little machine. Used to suck up water after a major leak
Cleans well ,even pet hairs
Brilliant vacuum cleaner (even with hairy puppy in the house),long plug flex and not too heavy. Feels sturdy and dependable so far.
Good piece of kit but bulky in a normal house.
I purchased this vacuum cleaner as I had got fed up with the usual bagless models blocking their filters after every use. No point in an easy empty container if you loose suction when the filters are clogged with dust. Charles has been all round the house and the bag will last many more cleanings. Still on full suction. This is a large cleaner and I probably could have done with a normal Henry but the price was good. Comes with all the attachments you need and loads of cable. Shame the cable isn’t retractable. Wet usage may come in handy. Charles is a large and fairly heavy chap so maybe not practical for some but cleaning power is excellent.
