I wanted to use a Hive Motion Detector in the garage at the bottom of my garden. This is some way from the back of my house and further still from my Hive Hub. To extend the range of the Zigbee network used by Hive, I used a combination of a Hive Signal Booster in the middle of my house and a Hive Plug at the back of my house. Thus the Motion Sensor communicates with the Hive Hub via (i) a Hive Plug and (ii) a Hive Signal Booster.

The other device you can use to extend the Hive Zigbee network is a Hive Bulb. Given the price of Hive Bulbs you can weigh up the cost/benefit of using bulbs, plugs and signal boosters and choose the best device to extend your Hive Zigbee network for your particular circumstances.

Bought this for the bathroom window. (Battery included) – The sensor was easily picked up by Hive “Install Device” process. My window frame has a curved edge but the sensors fitted on each side using the provided 3M sticking pads – very secure.
I have chosen that when the window opens I receive a text message and a push notification. Other actions are available.
    Very pleased and would recommend

This little sensor is really easy to install, just mounted on self-adhesive pads. It triggers each time the door is opened and sends a message to my smartphone, what could be simpler.

I have installed these in multiple places in my house. In some instances I have used two in a room, as there would be instances where one or the other might be temporarily obscured. Overall, these work well. But, they can be infuriatingly slow to activate on occasion. Whether this is due to the sensor, or more likely Hive “central”, is not clear. The app is poor in its flexibility though, plus Hive tech support NEVER take ownership of issues that are their making. That said, I am sufficiently satisfied that my house is near totally HIVE plus Alexa equipped for heating, security and lights.

I use this as a movement detector in my bedroom to light a lamp in the next bedroom which shines through the slightly ajar doors to allow to see my way to the toilet, there is no street lighting where I live so otherwise it would pitch black. Far more fun than a torch!!!

The unit does what it says and programming the Hive app was pretty intuitive. It does feel a bit flimsy for the price.
Note: this was a second purchase after sending back a faulty unit so I’m not entirely confident of its reliability

I have a fairly large ‘Hive’ installation in constant use, with a number of these motion detectors for various applications. They are generally reliable and work well, but occasionally drop ‘off-line’. Lithium battery powered – lasts for ages! Motion detectors can sometimes be a little temperamental to set up (out of range) if remotely sited from hub or signal boosters. Hive ‘App’ can also be a little unstable – but with recent upgrades, it’s getting better with time. Tech Support (Call Centre) is not easy to contact. On-line tech support rarely works for me…

Bought two from Amazon warehouse slightly cheaper than full price. One didn’t come with the sticky pads but luckily I had some spares.
The other also had the battery seal removed so I had to do a factory reset on it before I could add it.

Both parts just stick to the door and door frame so installation is easy.
You need to ensure the gap is small between the two. Initially I was getting false alerts on one of the doors as it wasn’t quite flush to the frame so had to relocate the sensors.
I would recommend lining the sensors up on the correct markers on the sensors and testing prior to affecting as one of the sensors didn’t work on the marked point and had to be the opposite way around. Once added to the hive app you can monitor the sensor and test prior to sticking to the door.

Work as expected but be aware of additional step or missing sticky pads from amazon warehouse

This didn’t work out of the box.
Contacted Hive tech support and they transmitted a firmware update, after 30 mins it worked and has continued to do so.

As usual, the ease of use is compromised by the Hive app but after some cursing I have got it to do a number of different functions depending on the time of day.

Would probably work well within it’s own ecosystem, however, I already have made a considerable investment in smart lights from another manufacturer. This would not usually be an issue as services such as IFTTT allow for interactivity between smart devices from different manufacturers. It would seem that while Hive devices are quite willing to take an input from another device or service and carryout an action (i.e. if it gets dark turn the lights on, if it gets cold turn the heating on) It’s quite a different story with their output devices, so instead of the motion detector simply sending an alert to another API and that then carrying out an action, the best you can do is get a notification on your phone or tablet and then set up another action to act on receipt of that notification. This is an unreliable and slow method to achieve an outcome which should be simple and straightforward.
    EDIT:-
Anyone who is tech savvy, BUY THIS SENSOR!
Then, set it free with a ZigBee hub and tasmota!
Have connected two off these sensors to a third party ZigBee hub, and both have so much more going on than just the IR motion detector, although they are both different…..
One also has a temperature sensor, a luminance sensor as well as battery and signal levels.
The other has temperature and ‘occupancy sensors and also transmits battery and signal levels!
    OOH THE ZIGBEE!

I have 2 of these, they work fine. Batteries last about 18 months & are easy to replace.
If you are having problems pairing press reset for 10 seconds & let the hub find it. This can take 10 minutes so be patient.
Hive after sale service could be better as they never follow through when they say they will call you back.
That’s their way of fobbing you off. Insist on a resolution & always get the persons name.

We have Hive heating and lately we have started looking at the other Hive products.

We went for a motion sensor as my wife wanted an alert if motion was detected in the Kitchen Diner at night.

This is perfect for that. It feels quite flimsy build wise but is quite compact so easy to place.

Pairing it was really strange. Went through the process but no notification of success in the app, nor was there anything obvious to say it worked. Tried reset a few times and again nothing. It was only when I had a look in the menu it was there, so this initially threw me.

I then pinned it to the HIve dashboard in the app and from there I could configure how it behaves. I have mine set to a schedule and alert me, and I have my phone set to allow the alerts when in quiet mode.

Accuracy wise it hasnt failed a single time to detect motion. I get to test it frequently as my daughter is sleep adverse at the moment. lol

Arrived next day thanks to Prime. Sensor cane well packed and with a little instruction leaflet. Setting up was very easy. Pull the little plastic battery sleeve out and then go into your Hive app and follow the simple instructions ( you will need to have the Hive Hub). Once connected the the app notifies you when the door is opened and it will tell you how long it was open for too. I’m very impressed with it and will order more for the other doors.

Purchased 3 of these so I could set them up around my house so I didn’t have to turn the lights on or tell Alexa to do it they were super easy to set up and didn’t take long at all probably about 5mins

I currently have a routine so that when I walk past during sunset the lights turn on and they notify me if they get triggered when I’m at work

The only downside to these is the fact that I’ve had false alarms and the upstairs light turned on randomly at 1am and woke me up

    Perfect for your automated needs

Great addition to the Hive system. Mine is set to switch on the kitchen GU10 bulbs every time I walk in and when I leave they switch off 3 minutes later. Easy to install and quite small. Only downside with Hive products is the price! Nothing with Hive is cheap, but their items are good quality and last.
I’m now thinking where to position my next sensor and what action I want it to do!

Other people have complained of battery life but I have two of these which have been running for a year and are still on the original battery.
They have good sensitivity, easy to mount with double sided sticky tape and if you cover the LED unobtrusive.
Basically they do what you would hope they are for – allow you to trigger Hive devices or just simply log activity.

These are pretty good sensors so far. There is occasionally a longer delay when activating lights but that seems to be related to surrounding temperatures. I’m only talking a second or two, not major delays. Would recommend them if you have hive lights etc.

Our bathroom light switch is behind the door which is a nightmare, particularly for the children as you have to go into the bathroom then shut the door to find the switch which is very scary for the children at night time when it is pitch black. The motion sensor is programmed to turn the bathroom light on every time some one walks in the bathroom and it works perfectly. We have programmed it to start an hour before sunset and end an hour after sunrise so it doesn’t come on in the day time. Everyone is happy now.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersRead a lot of reviews that say this is rubbish and unreliable and battery dies and things like that. I’ve had mine for 3 months now, and it works every time. I have it in the garage, and so it probably gets used once or twice a day, so not massive use, but not rarely used either. It’s never failed to turn on, and I have it stay on for 5 mins and auto turn back off, which has also works great.

I wonder if the people having problems have it in busy rooms, so it is constantly being triggered. For my usage it’s been great. If it ever develops problems then I’ll update my review.

I’m thinking of getting another one for the hallway which would then be triggered 10+ times a day, so it will be interesting how much that affects performance.

The top review is negative for this item and this did put me off purchasing this for a while but then I checked the recent reviews and this had positive feedback so thought I might as well try and if I have issues Amazon’s return policy will protect me.

I needed a motion sensor to turn on the bathroom light especially during the night. Once set up which is easy to do via the app this is working great. I have set multiple schedules to work at different times with different brightness’s. There is a lot of flexibility available. I still can’t understand the negative reviews as a lot of external factors can affect these, network speed, number of devices, signal strength of the device so it will work differently for everyone. I cannot fault this product it also looks great and is small and discreet. I will look to add more in the future.

Edit: Hive resolved this issue and I know have 1 sensor switching on 4 bulbs perfectly every time so I’ve changed my review from 4 to 5 stars.

I’ve recently kitted out my home with a number of smart devices including Hive Thermostat, bulbs and sensors and being wheelchair bound their making my life that bit easier.

I have one of these sensors in the bedroom which turns on a lamp as I enter the room and that works perfectly.

I put one in the kitchen to turn on 4 GU10 bulbs. It would work for a day and then stop working, if I deleted the routine and redid it then it would work for a short time. I returned a sensor thinking it was faulty but a second one was the same.

I was considering what the difference is between the two rooms and decided to try only linking 2 bulbs to the kitchen sensor and that resolved the problem. I’ve ordered a second sensor for the kitchen to turn on the remaining 2 bulbs.
It’s less than ideal to have to spend that amount of money twice but for me it’s worth it.

Incidentally, I do also have a door sensor and that manages to turn all 4 bulbs on when coming into the kitchen.

This is part of the wider Hive technology products. It is functional and discreet. Tethered into other products and the Hive App makes it works brilliantly. I’ve got it turning an electric fire on and off for an elderly infirm relative who forgets to do so. The fire is switched on in timing increments of 15 minutes with a Hive plug which keeps my relative safe and saves power from unnecessary usage. Brilliant device

  54. Lanora78Eu says:

Installation wasn’t as straight forward as the manual makes out – I had to restart the hub to get it connected, however once it found it – it was easy enough to stick in place and set the schedule for monitoring motion.

I only have it set to alert me via the app and it does this well, the logs are handy too.

Only once have I had a problem where the hub lost connection with it, again restarting it seemed to fix that.

It’s a neat little piece of equipment, but in reality – by itself isn’t all that useful, just being told there’s movement and not being able to see it is quite limiting, but it does what it’s meant to.

Also – my cat doesn’t appear to set it off too much – mine is positioned near the stairs so sometimes she can, but mostly hasn’t.
