Read to grandchildren hundred of miles away
Our grandson in France already had a Lunii Storyteller and loved it. So we bought one for our 4 year old granddaughter. Using the accompanying phone app we can record and upload stories up to 8 minutes long and the parents download the file onto the little box player. Both kids love it.

This is a really cute little box that I bought in a panic before a long flight. Thankfully it has already paid for itself 100 fold! My daughter (5) uses it every single evening in her bedroom for about 45 mins instead of staying up with us, badgering is to watch telly. We’ve paid about an extra 30 to have pretty much limitless stories and it’s more than worth it. A great, easy to use, hardy device that my son (3) also loves to listen to even if he’s not yet capable of choosing the stories. (Or isn’t allowed to by his big sis!)

Superb
My 3 year old loves his Lunii, he listens during breakfast and chills with it on his bed. So easy to use and the stories are cute and good price. I hope they bring out more in English!

Such a good idea! This box is perfect to keep my son (4years old) calm before going to bed or when driving..! He loves having the choice between the different characters and places and objects, he loves being able to select the different options himself (the box is very easy to use for kids) this is just brilliant! The stories are not too long / not too short (I would say a bit less than 10min approx.). Just brilliant!

Great screen-free entertainme
My 6 year old daughter is obsessed with this and loves being able to choose her own stories. She still enjoys reading herself and being read to and this just gives her an extra way to hear stories and foster her imagination. It was a good price on Amazon prime day and I’m sure will be excellent for longer car journeys.

I bought this on a whim; and at a discount but oh wow, it really exceeded my expectations. My 5 year old loves this!!! It is an electronic device with super intentions in this modern world – a chance for children to hear stories without graphics; relying on their imagination to fill in the gaps. It’s really wonderful and has the most initial use of anything we’ve bought…

AMAZING
It’s great for our 5 years old. It not only entertains her, but it also stimulates her independence and imagination. Our 3 years old is not that interested yet.

What a wonderful invention! Screen-free quiet story time...
I can see that this has somewhat mixed reviews, which I am surprised by — it is a solid five stars in my view! We have no television and I am keen to keep screen time to a minimum, yet it’s also extremely useful for young children to be able to have some quiet time — and convenient for me if it’s something they can do by themselves for ten minutes while I do chores! This totally fits the bill. I am so impressed by how child-friendly and intuitive the controls are; my four-year old was able to figure it all out immediately. It is also sturdy and hard to break (in our experience so far!) and batteries have lasted for a long time despite frequent use.
All in all, a real find. It is possibly a slightly quirky concept but there is definitely a place for it at our house and, although I received it for free to review, I think it is worth the money — I will be buying additional stories. It has had a lot of use so far.

Extremely successful at getting my 5 + 8 year olds to sleep!
I was sceptical that the Lunii would be appreciated by my 5 and 8 year old boys. In a life filled with Star Wars, Pokemon, Roald Dahl and rock music, the Lunii is a gentle presence.
It contains 48 stories, each about 3-5 minutes long, which are selected using the yellow wheel on the front of the box. The stories are … innocent and worthy, slightly humourless. When I first listened to one I thought they’d be too babyish for my kids.
I couldn’t have been more wrong. The boys love the stories and have become familiar with every option, and can now navigate to their favourites. I use the Lunii as the final story before sleep, played with the lights off. It’s amazing how quickly they will settle down and listen, and focus on the story instead of me or their brother. I think because the stories are so sweet and “young” they are more comforting. It has made bedtimes much easier and I wish I’d had one years ago.

This device is a totally unique modern take on the ‘choose-your-own-story’ books that I read in my childhood.
Once turned on (volume knob on the side) it tells you to press ‘OK’ and then it asks a series of questions about your story; once you have made your decisions, off it goes and tells you a story according to your choices. The stories themselves are very well narrated, with the occasional sound effects.
The front lights up with whatever the story is referring to; the image on the Amazon page is of a pirate, but, in a nice touch, that changes with the story context.
The device is charged and updatable via the microUSB port. Lunii also has a store where you can buy more stories; you need to install an application on your mac/pc to do this. The device comes with stories about “Suzanne and Ben”; once you have logged into the store you can also download “Goodnight Stories”.
Unfortunately most of the other stories are in French, with a few German, Dutch and English. I imagine that in time more will be added, but for the moment the selection is limited. With that said, the seem to be a large number of permutations on offer with the “Suzanne and Ben” and the “Good Night Stories” that the device comes with anyway.
In terms of physical hardware, this is going to get used by infants and thrown about. The body is soft touch plastic, that feels very robust & hardwearing. The buttons are big, clear and squishy. There is also a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB port in the side.

Update to review, October 2018
One year on and I thought I’d update my review. My children (4 and 7) absolutely love the Lunii and it gets most use on car journeys and camping. I am more convinced of its value as a story-telling device that is more wholesome and imaginative than the TV or a computer game.
The main drawback is the limited number of stories on the online store – all the new ones seem to be in French with a few additional American English stories complete with heavy American accents. That said, my children have been happy with the included and free additional story packs. There are two other UK-English story packs to buy, which I am considering buying them for Christmas.
My review score remains at 4 stars out of 5.

Original review, November 2017
I have mixed feelings about the Lunii storyteller. – I like the idea that this is about encouraging children to use their imaginations and that they can have some control by choosing the key elements of the story. But its value and longevity are questionable.
It consists of a plastic box with a soft finish, a selection dial on the front for choosing the type of story, a dial on the side to turn on/off and control the volume, and three buttons on the front to return to home/pause/select. The box feels a bit cheaply made but is not bad and its lightweight actually feels like an advantage with young children.
The stories are around 5 minutes long, which feels like a good length. You can choose the who, where and what of the story. I was a bit worried it would be some sort of automated story that would have standard lines for each selection and repeat them across different stories with that selection. I was pleased though that this is not the case and that each of the 48 stories is different. The stories are ok but are a little bland and uninspiring, perhaps because of the way they are narrated, without the high level of enthusiasm needed for the target audience of young children.
I would say the included stories are suitable for ages 3-6 years. My 3 and 6 year-old children have really enjoyed creating their own stories and this is the real magic of this device – the control it gives children to ‘create’ the story. It is really easy for young children to learn how to master. It is good for short car journeys (although the relatively low volume can make it inaudible on the motorway) in particular.
The cost of the product itself (approx 50 pounds at time of review) and the cost to download more stories (around 10 pounds for a further 18 stories) is something to consider carefully.

Good, but quite expensive
Stories are 5 minutes long
Additional downloadable stories currently cost a little over 10 Euros for 18 extra stories.
Controlling the storyteller is childsplay.. Turning the large yellow knob changes the front picture, along with with a female voice, to help you to choose a story. The stories are narated by a male storyteller. He has an neutral English accent, but the storyteller does have some Americanisms, such as “candy”.
at this time stories are only available in English and French.
The sound quality is very good. However the maximum volume is not loud. The volume can be reduced down to a whisper.
The unit feels pleasantly soft to hold. It is good that there is an element of choice for a child. You might also consider encouraging your child to make pictures for the stories to encourage better listening.
The big negative is the price. The stories are quite bland, so they are only going to interest the very youngest listeners. That limits the longevity of the product. That said the storyteller is an easy thing to share and pass on, which can add to its value. Also good for slow learners and children for whom English is not their first language.
