Love the Mitsubishi Belt Sanders, they are incredible sanders. I have two. However, the instructions are in Japanese. But that is really no problem as the Belt Sander is simple to operate. But it would be nice to have a manual in English

First of all, I have the dreaded 100VAC 50-60hz Made in Japan, belt sander. I love it. As a matter of fact I broke it out today and was using it to shape and sand the teeth on a Tiki, I am making. As I used this device, I noticed it was not screeching back at me like my jitterbug and the soothing hum of the motor allowed me to utilize the sculpting capabilities of our minds eye. It was pleasurable, I was lost in the moment, I enjoyed myself. Up until then I used it for boat/fiberglass work, which is not nearly as fun as woodworking IMHO…Great tool..

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWhen my husband left me after 20 yrs of marriage for a cute blonde bartender he didn’t take any of his tools. Since he had taught me how to use them (co-General Contractor) I decided to keep them. “My” previous Makita belt sander, bought before 1982 and well loved, finally died this year so of course I wouldn’t think of buying any other brand. It works great for all my construction and crafting projects.

I was looking at this for awhile. The price made me flinch a bit. I was at a point in my boat construction where I had to clean up a lot of the joints I had made with epoxy. This was the perfect tool. It did a great job and also I was able to do detail work where the big sanders wouldn’t fit. It also could take off any high screw heads as the belts handle metal. I use the end to shape rounded joints and the flat for surfaces. All in all it saved me hours.. I wish it was variable speed as it can be very aggressive even with fine grit belts..

Golden Review Award: 16 From Our UsersAnother excellent tool from Makita, aside from the dust port (more on that below). The negative reviews seem to come from the folks who probably jumped on a cheaper price offered by Japanese-labelled outfits – disregard them. Scroll down to the one sold by Amazon for $229 (not “fulfilled by Amazon”). It will come with correct voltage and English manual.

As others noted, the dust port won’t fit anything US-sized. Makita naturally intended it to be used with their own dust extractor – which I am sure is most excellent, but so is my Shop Vac – and I am not switching over. I registered my displeasure with Makita USA on multiple occasions over the last 10 years with no apparent effect.

Here is the workaround: get the Shop Vac 906-87-00 Universal Tool Adapter. It is made of rubber-like plastic and fits very tightly. The small end of the adapter will fit snugly in the dust port, the middle section will accept the 1-1/4″ Shop Vac hose end. Chop the rest off with a hack saw. Thus adapted, the tool operates as clean as you can expect from a sander (i.e. there is some dust on the surface, but very little is airborne).

While at it, you may also want to remove the pin and cover – they serve no useful purpose. Put those in an envelope and mail it to Makita USA, 14930 Northam St., La Mirada, CA 90638 (with an expletive of your choice).

I also removed the useless handle arm. Pushing the nose by the handle causes the front pulley to sway – very slightly, but enough for the belt to start sliding around. Without the handle and the handle arm you have a clear view of the nose and can still have a fine control – just grip the motor housing with other hand. Now, when looking at the front pulley – if the belt attempts to slide, it means you are pushing too hard.

Lastly, the manual fails to mention that you can tweak the tension of the front pulley by twisting the large knurled nut holding spring and pulley arm together. See the photos.

Another excellent tool from Makita, another dust port nightmare

I am extremely pleased with this product. I don’t know if the engineers that designed this had boat work in mind but it seems as though it was made for it. The radius of the front wheel matches the majority of the radius i encounter. It has also made sanding in tight spaces less of a headache. Since it arrived it has been used non stop, without issue.

Great sander , like others have said but don’t you think if the shipment was to the USA they would include an english manual? Or if they put on a dust extractor port because it is needed , that they should sell adapters to fit most if not all dust collection hoses? And or sell the hook up kit with hoses? Maybe it is a little too much to ask for? My guess is they never bother to read reviews. It is a great sander though. Seller sucks poo.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersBest tool purchase in a long time. I waited a long time before purchasing one due to its obsurd price but it’s such a time saver for coping shoe or crown. It was a Japanese 100 amp model I got from here but it works fine on our American 110 outlets. I can cope a piece of shoe flawlessly without breaking out a coping saw in 5 seconds ( literally, we kept timing it) by just sanding it down with this.
Dust blows right in your face unless you buy the belt sander bag for it. It’s Makita part no. 1225483

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersIf you work with wood you need this great tool! Small enough to replace a file sometimes, agile enough to fit in small places, smooth operation, relatively quiet, just plain cool. Very much cleaner than using a 4 1/2 grinder, often a better choice. Just do yourself a favor and get this, and keep it handy so you remember to use it next time you are scratching your head about “how do I…..?”
Fun fact: Trim carpet edges with it. Who knew.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersAfter 6+ months of regular use, this has become one of my favorite tools. The speed adjustment, quality of the tool, the noise level, ergonomics, materials, how easily the belts change, etc. are all absolutely perfect, and well worth the price. For working with wood, metal, and fiberglass (boats), this is an invaluable tool that you won’t know how you lived without. Especially if you work with fiberglass boats, the ability to quickly sand an inside radius or feather surfaces quickly and cleanly is a game-changer.

There is one significant problem with the design: If you plan to use the dust collection, you will likely have to remove a roll pin and cover, as well as make a male-to-male adapter to get a hose onto the thing. This is assuming you already have the small euro-style shop vac hoses. If you have the typical 7/8″-1.5″ shop vac and hoses, you are going to need a mess of adapters. I do not understand why Makita didn’t include an adapter or come up with a better design for the dust collection. The dust collection is the main reason I spent 10x on this unit versus the similar generic tool I had been using previously. Makita seems to have designed this tool to take a very small hose that would go *inside* the dust collection port. I have been unable to find a hose that would work for this use.

I’m still very happy with the tool overall!

Replacement of a nearly indestructible sander grinder with which for many years made my
living as a metal fabricator. Why did the first one quit after only 35 years?
Awwrrrr… I forgot to lubricate the front roller. Excessive friction overloaded the motor and smoked the windings.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBest sander purchase ever! I had a lot of paint and fiberglass sanding to do and this made very short work of it! The sander is small and light but very powerful. The speed control is right at your fingertips, so I could adjust the speed while sanding without putting the tool down. It is light enough that I did hours of sanding one handed. I was holding a vacuum with my other hand.

We purchased this sander to remove the finish from the inside edge of the rails on our deck. There were a couple hundred rails to sand and when faced with the prospect of sanding all of them by hand, we expected this part of the project to take several days. We were thrilled to find this sander, which cut the job down to a couple of hours. Changing the belts was super easy. The sander is quite heavy – much heavier than I expected, but the extra handle helped to offset this by allowing a two handed grip. I am not sure what other uses we will find for the tool, but for the purpose we needed it for it was definitely a great purchase.

I based my decision on the other reviews. I don’t typically write reviews however this thing is great. I used this on a high end kitchen install and it was some of my best work to date. This a good quality product. It runs quietler than I expected, that I think is a result of strong materials and quality bearings. The only limitation is that Makita only supplies belts up to 240 grit. This is OK for general sanding, but I also need to use it for polishing, and the available grits will not work for that application. This is a good product at an affordable price point.

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersI’ve used this most recently to sand the edges of some sheet metal flat — worked really well and its compact size gets into some small spaces. I would have given it 5 stars but when using it on large flat objects it likes to leave wheel marks — nothing you can do about it either — all belt sanders do but this one being so thin really does it. its fine for small areas but if you have something large to sand you don’t want to use this unit.
