After reading about all the fakes I was a bit apprehensive about order via amazon but since I could just send them back I thought “why not”. I went through all the usually checks and am pretty convinced they are the real deal. Use a caliper calibration block and nailed each size as one would expect. Not a professional tradesman so these will be used casually and will most likely be the last pair I need to buy for a long time going by first impressions.

I have this one for the workshop.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LPIWAYO/

I wanted a second one for inside the house. So I bought this caliper. Knowing what I know now, I’d have spend the extra money to get the one I bought before for 2 main reasons.

    1 – This one doesn’t auto-power off.

2 – The buttons are small and practically flush with the plastic face.

Neither of which was an issue with the other one. The other doesn’t even have a power button it powers up and down automatically.

Functionally it works fine and seems well made. I’d just rather not be annoying by trying to press buttons it should be easy to press. Or opening the carrying case and noticing it was still turned on.

    This things amazing!
Need a precision measurement tool? Want to buy something made in Japan with love by people who care about making a nice thing actually really really nice! This is the thing for you! Sure it’s a bit more expensive than the cheapy trash ones but you will definitely have this for a long time and know that you are measuring with confidence!!! 100/10 recommend.

It’s been over a year since I purchased my calipers and they’ve held up greatly. Within half a thousandth accuracy repeatedly just making sure I’m straight and not canted is the difference and used micrometers to double check and usually within .0001″ to .00005″ and held up to the coolant droplets and shavings of metal that I constantly wipe off to measure.

Nothing more to say really. The certificate# matched the device.

The only thing I would say, and that’s related to the battery compartment. It’s seems very easy to remove.

The compartment cover does get retained by the clips and hasn’t popped open yet. Not downgrading for that reason.
Who knows – Maybe it’s just me used to feeling that you nearly have to break something to open plastic covers and this is actually how they should all be.

It’s a delicate lab instrument and not a wrench that you just throw on the bench while measuring bullets or whatever. I received mine with a battery that is only a few months old.
    PROS –
    – Accuracy is high and consistent
    – I like the fact someone put their name on the QA/QC data sheet

CONS – Mechanics of the jaws have a bit of slop, if you take a measurement inside the jaws measurement is consistent. If you take the same measurement towards the outer edge of the jaw the reading will be the same IF you do not drive the thumb wheel too hard. If you press the thumb wheel hard the measurement will be reduced a few thousands.
I find it’s easier and more consistently accurate if you just close the jaws (press at the base rather than the tips) manually and do not use the thumb wheel.

What can I say, I LOVE THESE CALIPERS!!! I’ve had around 12 sets from various makers over the past few years and every set has had a week point whether it be jumpy, inaccurate, constant need to rezero, rough sliding mechanism, extremely sensitive to pressure, you name it. Not with these! I primarily use them in my reloading and occasionally to get a “rough measurement” on parts I make on my lathe. If you are thinking about getting them just go ahead and do it, and save yourself some time and aggitation. If I had bought these to begin with I would’ve even saved a few bucks overall.

For what I received, this was the Real Mitutoyo 500-196-30 and not a Chinese knock-off.

For the battery, I used a 357 but not the SR44 which came with the caliper. The trick was removing the battery from the compartment since the 357 is a touch larger than the SR44. For this, I used a small piece of duck tape to pull the battery out of the compartment.
For the caliper, I only use this when needed. Most of the time, it remains in storage. As such, I do not want to leave the battery inside when not being used for a while.

I ordered this to measure shims while doing a valve adjustment. The first order got lost but I had to wait another week for Amazon to make sure it really was lost before I could reorder and then another week plus for it to arrive. Did the job with my brother’s digital caliper that cost a third what this one does and it did work fine once I figured out it was always .02mm over. Is this one worth three times the cost? I appreciate the craftsmanship, precision, fit and finish of the Mitutoyo and the pleasure using of a premium tool so for me it is worth it.

Mine just showed up from the courier, After doing all the checks necessary to ensure it is not a fake I can attest the ones sold directly by Amazon are the real McCoy.

Everything about this digital caliper screams quality. It has zero deflection between the main jaws. The battery was NOT installed and is the Maxell SR44SW battery expected in this caliper All of the other checks — case quality, caliper metal finish, breaking the sharpness of most edges, plastic parts quality, 0.0000 with full size digits in inch mode, QC certificate has a proper signature and is not washed out, etc…

The caliper works as smooth as butter and measuring tolerances are within spec.

    Very happy with my purchase.

This a very accurate, easy to read caliper. I’m not a digital caliper kind of guy but this is one I dont mind using. I have a few Mitutoyo calipers and gauge blocks and they just make affordable, quality tools. I would definitely recommend spending a few extra bucks and buy these instead of the cheaper made in China crap. You’ll be happier in the long run. The only con is the onsite memory is glitchy, doesn’t keep the reading. I’m not going to use that feature anyway so…I don’t care. Hope this helps.

Was looking for some Digital Calipers and after some research decided the Mitutoyo ones to be the most reasonable and a good product. I was sceptical about this item via Amazon due to the mention of fake items. The price is t too bad if you want quality. I have YouTubed and I am 100% satisfied this item is not fake. The attached pictures will show you and feel free to compare to the fake items mentioned on the internet. The battery is an SR44SW which the genuine product comes with, although the description states LR44, which is incorrect. The serial numbers match the paperwork, the display is crystal clear, as are the instructions font, paper quality and general layout. The knurled locking nut at the top is smaller than the fake ones, another indication these are genuine. Although I’ve not used them yet, I’m satisfied that these are the bees knees and this is a genuine item and can’t wait to use them for motorcycle maintenance.

I was hesitant to buy these because there are so many fakes out there. But after a lot of research (well 30 minutes and 3 sites worth) these are the real deal. Sold and shipped by Amazon is also a certified retailer of authentic mitutoyo calipers.
They should come with an sr44 battery and the battery itself should say sr44 not just the packaging. The fakes reportedly have lr44.
It should have yellow tag around the know and come in a sealed plastic bag. All around these fill flawless.
Originally I thought spending 140 on calipers was absurd especially since my need for them doesn’t require .0000 accuracy. But the over all quality of these is unmatchable. Prior to these I was using the igaging calipers. Won’t go back

Great quality, very sturdy and accurate. Just what I wanted. My only complaint is the plastic box: firstly it’s much bigger than other calipers I’ve used in the past. Secondly the calipers are very loose in the box so it rattles a lot when it’s in my rucksack

Not having a standard to compare it against, it is hard to make absolute statements about accuracy. However, it appears to be a superbly made instrument. I am impressed by the build quality. I needed a digital instrument because I have trouble reading a veneer scale.

Had several of these, but the later versions have a wobbly inch/mm push button switch which is recessed and requires a finger nail to operate. Otherwise OK, stainless, and hard enough to use as a marking gauge.

Just holding it and looking at it you can tell the difference in quality. The fit and finish are amazing. The slide is smooth and doesn’t wobble or feel loose. The display is easy to read and its spot on. You don’t have to re-calibrate. It knows its exact position wherever it is when you turn it on. I’ve had it for a few months now and the battery isn’t dead unlike all the other look-a-likes you can find for $25-$30. Made in Japan not China. It does not have an automatic shutoff. some like that, some don’t. I kinda like it when you get distracted (wife, kids, buddy with beers in hand) the measurement is still on display when you come back.

I purchased this for my own home use. The caliper appears to be genuine. There is a small bit of marring on the back of the bar. The fixed jaw has some minor finishing issues as well. The sliding motion is not entirely smooth with noticeable oscillatory variations in resistance when moved at more than a snails pace.

The overall quality and attention to detail of this model does not live up to that of my ~60 year old Mitutoyo dial caliper, or the ~20 year old Mitutoyo digital caliper i use at work. Mitutoyo is still really the only brand to consider for high-end, ‘buy once, use forever’ type calipers. Compared to the older models this caliper is something of a disappointment.

Given the market Mitutoyo calipers appeal to it is a shame that the quality/QC has been seemingly compromised to lower the cost or increase profit. Even if getting a new caliper that lived up to the older models cost twice as much as this one did it would be more than worth it.

My el cheapo Chinese calipers finally fell to bits recently after many years of service so I decided to treat myself to a Mitutoyo as it was a good price on Amazon.

It is beautiful to use with a lovely silky feel and reproducible accurate results.

My only slight niggle is that they don’t switch off automatically. I have already accidentally left them switched on overnight so I don’t know how the battery will last.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’m not sure I get what all the fuss is about. The number of fakes seemed concerning, but now that it ships direct from Amazon I hope that’s resolved. I’m pretty certain mine is legit; proper branded and uninstalled battery, matching serial, no typos and usable QR code on back etc.

It is a top quality tool to be sure, and having such a tool is very satisfying (that’s why I bought it). That said, it reads identically to the 1/2 thou to my $46 igaging caliber from Lee Valley, that has a bigger display, fractional readout, and feels like about 80-90% of the build quality. You’re sacrificing no accuracy and get a much better value. There definitely nothing about about this quality tool other than the excessive price. I’m not unhappy with my purchase, but having confirmed the accuracy of a much cheaper (~$50; not $20 junk-range) calliper, I’d never buy another one of these.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersIt can measure external, internal and depth arrangements. I have an old model -20 as well as a new one just purchased -30, the new one has a nice feature that when the battery is installed with jaws closed the display shows dashes until the origin is pressed, after this initial setup each time it is turned on it automatically sets to zero. The units resolution and accuracy is as per spec which I have checked with BS calibrated Moore and Wright micrometers.

With respect to the reviews which say a ‘Fake’ was supplied, check who is supplying the unit – I got mine from Allendale Stores (M-DRO) via Amazon, I have used Allendale Stores (M-DRO) before and they only supply quality products with an excellent pre and after sales service.

He had another brand but the lecturer told him that it wasn’t accurate enough and was recommended to buy this brand/model. Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersFirst let me say that like other reviews here I did my homework and checked that my calipers were genuine. The mitutoyo tech support stated that Amazon is an authorized distributor and my calipers were authentic. If you buy from another seller on amazon buyer beware. All the other things checked out, fancy japanese paper, crisp packaging, no battery installed, high quality build. Also, the genuine calipers have a qr code that contains the model and serial numbers. They should match.

As for using the calipers themselves. They are great. Checked accuracy vs my micrometer and they were spot on. Display is easy to read. Like most calipers they are easy to use, nothing special.

Don’t waste your money on junk, buy real calipers and don’t regret it.

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersTook a gamble on this one based on quite polarizing reviews. The one I purchased shipped from Amazon Canada, not a second party seller, which made me slightly more at ease.

First step when it showed up was to watch AvE’s video on YouTube highlighting the tell-tale signs that you may have a counterfeit set of calipers.

A couple things made me nervous of the authenticity of the product I received, which was the fact that the signatures and stamp on the paperwork were in fact printed (not pixelated and actually really hard to distinguish from handwritten), rather than signed by hand and stamped with rubber. But, comparing the other issues AvE brings up in his video leads me to believe I have a genuine product.

    – Serial numbers matching as illustrated in the photo
    – Product number ordered matches the product number received
    – Promotional material included inside the case was genuine and relevant
    – Calipers remain accurate in regards to zeroing out the origin
    – Battery supplied was a Made In Japan SR44 and was NOT installed from the factory

Hopefully this keeps the reviews current, and some more of you can feel good about your purchase, rather than having something of a pit in your stomach about these calipers.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersHaving retired, my work these days as a model engineer/fixer/fiddler is carried out in poor surroundings (the back of a dusty, cobweb ridden, not too clean garage). For this reason I had never considered spending almost 90 on a calliper. This has mostly been driven by the circumstances I outline. I almost felt guilty at the thought of using a quality, precision instrument in my poor conditions. I have therefore, always bought cheap calipers, convincing myself that in doing so I’m not risking anything expensive.
After my latest calipers went wrong, I had a search through my cupboards and drawers and was shocked to find SIX broken calipers which I’d bought over the years, none (as I remember) lasting very long even though I try not to place them down during use into a pile of swarf, or whatever.
At this point I underwent a damalcean conversion moment. It occurred to me that if I’d paid, say, an average of 20 each for these cheap calipers, I’d already spent 120!!!! At this same moment, I realised it might have been cheaper to buy a quality tool in the first place. Had it lasted for as long as these cheap six I have, it would actually have been cheaper! Thus I decided to bite the bullet and try a quality tool instead.
So, to the caliper. What can one say about a Mitutoyo? Beautifully made, accurate, repeatable every time with a superb ‘feel’ in use which only comes from a quality instrument. I’m aware of reports of counterfeit items being around, so I bought mine from a reputable supplier (Allendale group who deal in all the top quality measuring instruments, D.R.O. systems etc. – usual disclaimer, no personal connection to this company other than as a satisfied customer.) and I haven’t been disappointed in any way. Fast dispatch, good price, and so on.
My challenge now is to try to look after my new acquisition and try to keep it clean in my poor environment. It will be interesting to see how it performs and outlasts the cheaper ones (which I’m assuming it will!. Perhaps I’ll update this review in 10 years, or so, to report how it’s going!
So far I’m delighted with this super tool.

According to the online counterfeit guides, everything indicates that these are genuine Mitutoyo Calipers. The quality is superb. I am happy with the peace of mind of having a reputable name-brand product so that I don’t have to wonder if they are accurate. I have had them every day for weeks now, and I have not had to recalibrate them once. If they don’t indicate 0 when I close them I can be sure wiping the tips is the solution. They continue to reflect proper dimensions even with the display off, so if I turn them on while they are open I still get an accurate reading. According to the enclosed certificate, the accuracy is +/- 0.02mm or less for the entire length of travel. Movement is smooth and controlled. For over $100 they weren’t cheap, but I feel like they are a great value. If there are better ones out there, I don’t want to know what they cost.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI’ve used these for 20 years at work so I’m very used to them. Now I have a set of my own! Smooth action, big readout, bigger than the older style, that resolves 0.0005 inch in five full-sized digits. Simple to flip to mm. Does not turn itself off (a good thing!). Super stable—maybe due to the submicron internal resolution? Great finish and fit. Thumbwheel feels good. Batteries, per catalog, state 3 to 5 years but I suspect longer based on past experience—and I have left them on over many a weekend!

This is not not a review of a counterfeit. This purchase was fulfilled by Amazon and their inventory control is impeccable. These calipers came in a sealed bag with a piece of Ferobrite VCI paper. That was placed in the one-piece molded case. On top of that, stapled all together, was the Ferobrite warning notice, a notice of the launch of Mitutoyo’s Smart Factory solutions website, a fold-out manual with 11 languages, a small notice to wipe excess oil from the calipers, a China RoHS compliance certificate (helping them to Import into China), a reminder to recycle batteries for the EU (in 7 languages) —and— an SR44SW battery made by Saizaiken, Japan.

Batteries last a very long time in a real Mitutoyo and, just to be sure this is not a counterfeit, I made some measurements: Current when on was pulsing 2 to 6 A and when off dropped to a stable 0.5 A: very good.
When a Mitutoyo wants a fresh battery a “B” is seen in the upper-right corner of the display. I measured this threshold at about 1.40 Volts. If you don’t heed that warning, a Mitutoyo will not give bad or unstable readings but will instead simply turn off. I measured this cutoff threshold at 1.3 Volts and the readings were dead-stable up the that point.

Other things that tend to indicate this is authentic is a CE mark with compliant dimensions, surface finish marks that are parallel with the tool, “ABSOLUTE” molded into the battery cover and gold plated battery contacts.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI had a cheap pair that seemed to function fairly well except if you left the battery in even while turned off, the battery would go dead. No big deal, I just took the battery out between uses. After about 3 years, they started to give weird readings at the low end of the scale, where they were used the most. So I pitched them and decided to buy these Mitutoyo calipers.
These appear to be the real deal. They are identical to the ones that we use at work. We buy directly from Mitutoyo and pay several dollars more for these. But Mitutoyo is probably the best out there. Them or Starrett.
These don’t have a data port. We have both at work, ones with a data port and ones without.
Also they come in the exact same chintzy plastic box with a folding hinge that will break after repeated use, just like the ones at work.
I actually kept the case my cheap ones came in, because it is a better case with an actual hinge that pivots on a pin, and looks like the case our older Mitutoyo calipers came in.
They’re butter smooth and hold zero.

I made sure that I received a genuine item – not a Chinese copy (this is easy to research on the web). The calipers check out against gauge blocks, repeat perfectly and zero without fail. However, the buttons really are far to small and if you have porky fingers they can be a struggle to operate.

  51. Anonymous says:

What is there to say? Mitutoyo is the gold standard. This was my first caliper, and I immediately checked its accuracy (perfect within the limits of what I can check). Ease of use is excellent: measuring inside, outside, or depth; metric or imperial; absolute or relative. The case is rugged and convenient. Unlike other calipers, this one doesn’t devour batteries (solar obviously doesn’t use batteries at all but does require that it sit out in strong light and is considerably more expensive).

BE SURE TO BUY FROM AMAZON. Do NOT buy from a third party through Amazon. There are simply too many counterfeits floating around. Amazon is an authorized dealer and so your caliper will be genuine (other reviews on here will help you ensure authenticity when it arrives). This was the best deal I could find from a legit source.

There are purists who want dial or vernier, and that’s fine, but for a first caliper you want something that does imperial and metric and is a no-brainer to operate.

My only critique is that Amazon doesn’t make it easy to find genuine accessories. In my case, the shoulders for depth measurements.

There are other very reputable brands out there, but for this product Mitutoyo is the default unless you have some compelling reason to grab something else.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersAs of this writing, I’m eight months in and I grow increasingly happy with this investment.

I’m far from a heavy user of precision measuring devices. Because of that, the extent of my caliper investment was a couple twenty dollar wannbe’s. Their dependability was such that I avoided using them, except when there was no other option. Each time I wanted to use the cheap ones, I had to replace or install the battery.

Now, with the Mitutoyo, I have no qualms about reaching for them to, for example, determine the inner and outer diameter of bearings for my pieces of equipment. Unlike the cheap versions I had in the past, these are ready to go with just a touch of a button.

Regarding accuracy, these go well beyond anything I need, for what I’m dealing with (bearing sizes, bolt sizes, etc.).

SIDE NOTE: Going by information others posted, mine is the genuine article.

P.S. I gave the other two, battery eating toys away.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe ones I received are a real as they get. Matched them up with a pair my employer purchased thru an authorized distributor 3 weeks prior to my buying this pair and found these to absolutely perfect. The exterior sleeve matched in size, print and color. The plastic case was identical right down to the fact the calipers rattles around in it. My older pair had a much nicer case in that it had foam so the calipers didn’t rattle around. The battery label and packaging was just as it should be and the directions were also a perfect match. The screen was correct as was the label in the back side. All in all I couldn’t have been more pleased with this purchase.

In reading all the negative reviews about fakes what people failed to mention was if the calipers they purchased actually came thru Amazon or a third party. Just because they were ordered thru Amazon doesn’t mean they came off their shelves.

Surprising how much better a nicely made tool works. Smooth, repeatable readings, easy to apply consistent pressure for each reading with confidence, jaws look well ground and parallel, display is large.
I hate changing the batteies in these, so often it takes a dozen attempts before the tiny circuit will work, in this case they provide a little instruction card showing how to install and then buttons to press to force a reset – FAB. I don’t particualrly like the box, bigger than needed and plasticky – for the price something a bit more classy would be nice.

Von Experimenten kuriert nun also Mitutoyo.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThis is far superior to my generic one which was constantly turning off and rezeroing itself and also giving me inconsistent readings every time I measured. If you make jewelry or another craft where you need precise measurements this one is worth it. The only thing I needed to get used to was that it doesn’t turn off by itself so sometimes I forget and am probably wasting battery life. However, in most cases that is a feature not a bug (meaning it’s not always turning itself off in between measurements). In addition, if the jaws are left open and you turn it off, when you turn it on it still gives you a measurement of where you left off, it doesn’t just zero off from that spot. You can press the TAR button for that giving you much more control and saving time. Once in a while it gets unzeroed by a 1/2mm and you can just take the battery out, close the jaws all the way, replace battery and hold the zeroing button to reset. Otherwise very stable and consistent readings.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI rarely have need for a caliper, and could probably have gotten by much more cheaply, but I appreciate well-crafted items that last, and Mitutoyo has a reputation as the ne plus ultra of digital calipers. I was afraid I would feel like a fool for having spent this kind of money on a tool I will likely rarely use, but I have no regrets. This thing is worth it. It could have cost twice as much and I’d probably say the same thing. The fit and finish are superb. The edges are crisp and have no burrs, the movement is silky smooth, and it just generally feels great in the hand. This is how tools should feel. I see no reason to suspect it wouldn’t last for decades if properly cared for. The case could be a little more robust (the hinges are just a single piece of plastic, the type you may recognize from every plastic case with broken hinges you’ve ever seen), but that’s a relatively small gripe.

Note: I purchased mine directly from Amazon, and I’m confident that what I received was authentic, but things happen. These things are widely counterfeited. Even if you are buying from an authorized channel, it doesn’t hurt to do some research on what to look for so you can be confident that you have the real deal. Also, if you are a nerd about such things like I am, it will help you appreciate just how excellent the real deal is.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis was the least expensive top of the line micrometer that I could kind. Quality and accuracy are pretty much second to none. Mitutoyo has been making great gear for as long as I can remember. Probably overkill for my purpose but I would rather have a tool that I can rely on. This is the “basic” electronic/digital Mitutoyo model you can buy much more expensive ones with extra features – but the quality is the same. Other brands of similar quality like Starret, Fowler, Brown & Sharp (thanks google) all seem to be more expensive for similar models. As always when buying high quality (expensive) tools you should check the specifications to ensure they will do what you need (for example more expensive calipers might guarantee higher accuracy).

Excellent quality, nonetheless typical of that which you’d come to expect from a brand like Mitutoyo. I bought this one to keep for home use as opposed to my older 196-20 that I still use at work and, after many years use, still operates as good as new.
All in all, they should both last for years to come.
Be warned though; there appears to be a multitude of these on offer on various ‘auction’ sites at cheap rate prices. Usually they’re rubbish imports without the quality of the real deal.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI researched a number of digital calipers before purchase and made the conclusion that the iGaging ABSOLUTE ORIGIN 0-6″ Digital was a pretty good unit for the price. I also saw the most of the folks felt the Mitutoyo was top of the line, but may not be worth the additional cost – $95 vs $40. I purchased the iGaging ABSOLUTE ORIGIN 0-6″ Digital calipers but I am returning them because of the display, which I have not seen discussed on this forum. I also purchased the Mitutoyo calipers. When comparing the display on the iGaging ABSOLUTE ORIGIN 0-6″ Digital vs the Mitutoyo you very quickly see the reason for the price difference. I expected to find a quality difference between the two, but was blown away by the clarity, size and quality of the display on the Mitutoyo. (500-196-30) I cannot fault the iGaging ABSOLUTE ORIGIN 0-6″ Digital as it appeared to be accurate and pretty well made, but for a tool that I plan to use for many years, I decided the price difference was worth paying. Bottom line, you won’t be disappointed in the accuracy of the iGaging ABSOLUTE ORIGIN 0-6″ Digital, but if you can afford the Mitutoyo calipers, go for it.
For those that are concerned about fake Mitutoyo calipers, the one I ordered came from Amazon LLC, and the calipers came in a sealed package that had to be cut open. Not the box mind you, but the actual packing that contained the calipers. All the included paperwork, box battery etc. said made in Japan. I don’t think for a second that the calipers I received were not genuine.

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersIt is difficult to appreciate why these calipers are so good, until one tries to use a few of the cheaper alternatives…
Jaws that don’t close because they are not square, depth gauges and edges that aren’t in line, displays that go mad when they smell suds and beams that bend, are all too common.
This is my fourth set of Mitutoyo calipers in forty years of daily machining work. I can report all have died honorable deaths in the line of duty, as opposed to being hurled violently across the workshop because they are (choice of expletive) useless.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAs a hobbyist I bought these calipers due to frustration with cheap alternatives that continually let me down. The quality is excellent and I have confidence in their accuracy and reliability. The advantages over a vernier caliper are that a zero can be set for offset measurement, and the digital display is easier to read. I don’t think they are intrinsically more accurate than my cheaper mechanical verniers however. I expect many years of good service from them. Take care to buy them from a reputable dealer as I did, there are many inferior counterfeits about it would appear.

Golden Review Award: 24 From Our UsersWas very skeptical especially with all the fakes. I bought through LLC Amazon, and after doing quite a bit of research I believe these to be real.
There are 4 zeros before the decimal point when in inches, and 2 zeros before the decimal in mm, the finish is very nice, even the box is very sturdy. The battery is the correct SR-44 and comes in its own plastic packaging (in the caliper box), the zero button has to be held when you fit the battery, when doing this make sure you put squeeze them closed to ensure correct readings. I contacted Mitutoyo to ensure the certificate of inspection of genuine as the signature and stamps look to be printed on. They viewed photos of the documents and believed them to be authentic, I think Mutitoyo must be printing signatures now… I also saw a review of someone else which posted the photo of this card, and it had a different serial number to mine which is another indication the item is authentic. For the record my serial ends in 554 so chances are if we all have different serial numbers the item is authentic as they match the item and certificate.

I hope this helps someone. Thanks.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI bought model 500-196-30 which was supplied by Cooks of Bedford Ltd and fulfilled by Amazon, and this one appears to be the genuine article. The performance and quality is excellent, and a big improvement over the cheaper models I’ve used in the past.

When fitting the battery for the first time (a Mitutoyo branded Seiko SR44) it displays a series of dashes on the LCD. You then have to close the jaws and hold the origin button for more than 1 second to reset the origin (as pictured below, there are instructions attached). Apparently the battery life is 3.5 years under “normal use” which is impressive!

The calipers have a useful function for switching between relative/absolute mode: pressing the Zero/Abs button switches to incremental mode (it displays “INC” on the LCD in this mode), so you can take a relative measurement at any point, then pressing and holding Zero/Abs again for three seconds switches it back to absolute mode.

Not much else to add really, except that it appears to be a very well made and high quality tool.

Golden Review Award: 33 From Our UsersI decided to buy a Mitutoyo after watching a Youtube video. AvE (I think he’s a Canadian engineer) does a tear-downs of cheap digital calipers and a fake Mitutoyo. Very interesting and well-worth watching.

I’m sure that the thing that arrived today is the genuine article. It feels right in the hand, it’s clearly well-made and the readings are endlessly reproducible. Further, the documents that came with it are, I’m sure, the real thing.

I’ve had a couple of cheap digital calipers in the past. Frankly, they were not too bad and for most hobbyists (like me) they might be all that’s needed. The problem is, they can be so rough inside that you might have a dud or you might have bought a real bargain. Without testing the cheapo model against something like this, you cannot be sure.

I’m about to embark on a project which calls for exacting measurement (even though it involves a Land Rover) and that’s why I bought these. I am really glad that I did, and if I take care of them properly, I expect that they will be the last digital calipers that I ever have to buy.

As for the whole “purchasing experience” it was amazing: I placed the order on a Saturday afternoon and they were here 24 hours later.
Thanks indeed to the delivery people who work for Amazon.

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersBrillant piece of kit, quality and repeatable accuracy as you’d expect from Mitutoyo. One slight oddity- the thumb wheel has some play, not a problem but would have expected it to be better built for the price. UPDATE: I had a comment saying this could be a fake product, but I’ve called Mitutoyo UK and its real. The play in the thumbwheel is normal and the way to confirm its genuine is to push the in/mm button and you should see 4 digits after the decimal point- 3 and its a fake.

I’m really impressed. I’ve just made some items which needed to be plus or minus a thou but were to big for a micrometer. I have been using a number of cheap c. 20 calipers over the years and I found them to be O.K. However, for this particular job I wasn’t sure if it was me making an error or the calipers. I purchased the above. Low and behold the items were within specification. Repeatability is excellent.

    A lovely piece of kit.

I had an old one from the same manufacturer which was ok, but this one with the Absolute AOS is great.

Sometimes I would measure something and forget to turn it on. With the old one, turning it on then would just read zero and you would have to measure again. This one because of the Absolute measuring, turning it on after you have have it on your object shows the size straight away.

A nice upgrade and a reasonable price.

I have had two miyutoyo calipers since 1988 and both still work and the gauge lab say they still hit their declared accuracy.

Brilliant calipers. I’ve had cheaper ones in the past, do yourself a favor and just get these instead. Really well made tool.

Not as cheap as some similar verniers, but definitely worth the price premium. Well built precision instrument, came in a plastic case and certificate of calibration.

Smooth movement on the roller and measurements are clearly denoted. The quality of finish and materials used in its construction feel very good indeed.

    Recommended.

Excellent tool. My second one, the first died after 15 years. Indispensible. Good price, quick deleivery.

Brought it as a treat now I like it so much I’m afraid to use it just incase I damage it. Still holding on to my el-cheepo one for daily abuse.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI’ve been struggling on for years with one cheap, Chinese caliper after another. Some better than others – none entirely satisfactory – they all end up with slightly loose jaws which give inconsistent measurements. Finally took the plunge and went with Mitutoyo, which are renowned to be the market leader. This caliper is an absolute pleasure to use. Wish I’d upgraded years ago. The ability to perform relative measurements is a nice additional feature.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWhen I first put the battery in and turned it on, it seemed I’d been sold a lemon. However, I closed the jaws, and because I’ve got stumpy fingers and no finger nails, I used a small, blunt, proddy thing to depress the origin button properly for a second or two, and it came to life.
Since then, I’ve used it innumerable times and it’s always given accurate readings, and just feels like quality. It deserves it’s high reputation.
If pushed, a minor gripe would be that it doesn’t turn itself off automatically, you need to remember that before closing the case. Having said that, I’ve had this for over 2 months now and I haven’t had to replace the battery yet.

Golden Review Award: 45 From Our UsersI just purchased this thru Amazon, this is an excellent high-quality digital caliper. For those searching on eBay and elsewhere, this is the real Mitutoyo product in the original case, with the OEM 1-year warranty, and an official calibration certificate whose serial number matches the instrument. This is NOT a cheap imitation, it’s the original Mitutoyo product and the seller (listed as MSI-Viking Gauge) is an authorized Mitutoyo reseller. I did a lot of research on the Internet to be sure I was buying the real thing, and this is it! The differences between this caliper and the imitations are: The action is very smooth, the readings are stable and repeatable (tested with gauge blocks), the readout is four decimals for inches, two decimals for millimeters, and the construction is very solid, no wobble or shake. Plus, this caliper has an absolute scale, it always remembers the zero-point and you only have to reset it when you change the battery. The cheaper scales drift and need frequent resetting. You can make relative measurements easily (yellow button), but when you turn that feature off, it returns to the original zero without resetting. I highly recommend these calipers, the only caveat is that these are NOT auto-off, you must remember to turn them off after use. However, based on my experience with other Mitutoyo gauges and micrometers, the battery lasts a LONG time so I don’t see this as a problem.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI used the Mitutoyo 500-196-30 150mm caliper for years as a student machine shop hand in undergrad, and now I bought my own set. It’s as good as I remember. They are a small piece of perfection in your hands.

It came with a “Certificate of Inspection” that is specific to my caliper (the certificate has the serial number matching my caliper). It shows measurement errors at 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200mm lengths, as well as 0, 2, 4 and 6″ lengths. It is NIST traceable “via No.683/283699-13”. It is also NMIJ/AIST and PTB traceable. I don’t know if this is the same as the “certificate of calibration” that is optional on mcmastercarr, but it is a convincing document.

As noted by others, it does not have an auto-off feature. The batteries last a long time, so I don’t think this is an issue.

One small disappointment: I bought the Mitutoyo 050083-10 75mm depth gauge attachment ( Mitutoyo 050083-10 Depth Base Attachment, 75 mm ). There is a space in the caliper case to hold this attachment. The depth gauge attachment has some interference with the case and and doesn’t fit. The ones we had in the student machine shop fit.
