Misleading
The advert said in one place,”The PetSafe Staywell Original 2 Way Pet Door offers a 2 6Way Locking system,”but it does not it only has a two way locking system, unles I’m doing something wrong. It took my brother and i ages to fit, but we were replacing a old existing cat flap so we had to be careful to cover existing hole.NOT WHAT I WAS EXPECTING,BUT BIG ENOUGH TO LET CATS IN AND OUT…….
Sturdy and easy to fi
This was a very reasonable price yet very well made. It’s simple to use, the lock feature seems smooth, and the install didn’t take long at all. The instructions were clear to use. Overall I am very impressed with this and would recommend this.
Easy to fit and fantastic quality.
Fantastic, so easy to fit and last so much longer, we have it for our cat, but our terrier likes to squeeze through it. He has broken 3 cat flaps before we got this one, and glad to say this one has out lasted all the others. Thank you
Ideal for my Border Collie.
This is ideal for my border collie. He now has access to the toilet outdoors. It is very durable as he has to run through it when chasing cats or aeroplanes.
Only down fall is the screws. You have to fit it to get the size that you need then you have to find a way to cut the screws. The screws have to be cut to allow the panel for locking it in. Would have been better to have a few sized screws.
Great for my BIG cat!
My Norwegian Forest cat is a big girl! She had difficulty with a “normal size” cat flap, but this is perfect. No problem adapting to it and she happily swans in and out. Not so easily installed as suggested. I had mine fitted by a joiner and even he found it a tad tricky. The screw placements seem to be the problem
Great cat flap
Fast delivery, it replaced our old one that my daughters dog demolished, he’s now done the same again, a staffie trying to get out of the cat flap. Just ordered another one
Happy Cat 😺
Well made catflap, Only took a couple of hours to fit.
Template ok & did help with marking door for cutting.
Good DIY skills are essential especially when cutting with a jig-saw.
It took the cat about 1 day to figure it out & now after 3 days of use she seems to be happy with using it. We purchased the medium sized flap & are very satisfied with the price & prompt delivery. Thank you.
Very good kit for easy acess for my dog
My son in law installed for us and on a standard door found the screws too long. He had to cut them. The lock system is really easy to use. My lab goes in and out very easily. Good value for money
Great item and value for money.
Great cat flap. Arrived quickly and well packaged. Great value for money. It is a little fiddly to install and its a 2 person job but still good.
Decent Large Cat Flap
Bought this for my two Maine Coon cats to access a private litter box cupboard. Size seems right and for the price it’s perfectly fine, but agree with others that installation was not the easiest and it’s a bit of a rough finish if you have a non-flat door. The bolts poke through the ‘inside’ so will be putting some rubber or foam covers over to ensure the kitties don’t injure themselves if they rush through.
It came on time
Easy to install if you have power tools to fix it up, use the key supplied I would think if would take hours. But hey it a bed what do you want !
Good produc
The part that flaps is hard plastic, it would have been nice to be a flexible soft plastic like the old one we had as made it easier for the animals to get through
Will work fine when the cat gets round to it.
It is installed in the back yard gate. The joiner had a little trouble with the bolts being too long for the width of the wood, but he managed eventually.
I have yet to train the cat to use it.
Simple design, works well.
Nice simple cat flap with a panel that slides down and clicks into place to lock it. I bought this in brown so it looked more subtle against my green door.
Great value for money
I have these in my cattery pens and find they are great value for money.
Basic but are perfect for what I need them for.
Definitely good value for money!
REALLY simple to fi
for ME, it was a replacement for an existing device, that my existing cat, had converted from a cat flap, to a cat hole in the wall ……………..
the new unit was selected, and on arrival, I noticed it was a complete inside AND outside fitting, was only expecting the external part :o)
took no more than 20 mins to swap over, and the external part was fitted underneath the original sealant too, so it is new, but looks like its been there for years – great job, cat however, is now spending time outside just banging on the bloody thing awaiting me to let him in ……………..
it’s not just old dogs that refuse to learn LOL
Great dog flap !
We purchased this to replace the older model which had sadly broken ( after years of abuse from our dog and cat !!) So we knew it was well worth the money ! Fitted easily into the old hole. We always put filler around the edges to ensure we don’t get a draft from this.
We use this for our border collie x
I don’t know what all the fuss is about, this could not be simpler to install, it took me 30 minutes from start to finish and fits perfect, even the flap opens fully.
I think previous buyers need to read the instructions properly!
It comes with 3 different length bolts and you may need to cut them flush with the nut which goes on the outside but that was the most difficult part. I recommend a dremel tool to cut these down, if not, a small hacksaw will work.
It is flimsy but if you are careful with the cutting and drilling, it will fit correctly and don’t tighten the screws too tight as it will crack the plastic as states in the instructions.
My main problem now is getting my dog to use it lol.
Hope this helps future buyers
Good value for money
I didn’t want a locking system, all sing all dancing flap, just an easy means of access and egress for my two dogs. This does the job and should I need to prevent them from going into the garden, I simply slide the door down which secures.
The magnet is a strong so the wind doesn’t blow it open and I probably could’ve had the medium size for my JRT and Cavashon, but they are happy about the extra size
Simple to install and easy to clean. 10/10
That the flap suits your dog.
It is so easy to install, works perfectly, I have a border collie and a jack Russell dogs ,so the flap get a lot of use every day and is good and strong, would highly recommend this seller.
Reliable, tried and tested.
This was to replace an old unit that had been damaged. It went straight in with no problems, bolts are a bit fiddly to connect but it all works perfectly, cat is very happy
Good quality, easily fitted
Good lockable cat flap. Easy enough to install even for not much of a handy man like myself. Good quality as this is a second one of this product we’ve had. First still in use after 6 years. New one for living room door so don’t have to keep getting up to let new kittens in and ou
Works well for an indoor solutio
I had a friend help me install this as you do have to take down the door and it needs some DIY know-how plus the right tools. Definitely a two-person job if only for re-hanging the door. Our cat is still small and hasn’t reached the critical mass needed to overcome the magnetic lock but I’m hoping that once she reaches her full size that won’t be a problem anymore. I would not use this with an outside door as it would really let the cold in. For what we needed it’s perfect.
Well made product.
Easy to install, does what it’s supposed to. Great value for money and fairly sturdy construction.
Read description & measure animal before you buy
Item suitable for tiny cat or kitten maybe miniature dogs but not for anything bigger the description isn’t very accurate with heights of animals, item is also off centre for fitting to anything other than an average back door other than that so much difficulty fitting….
Good basic cat flap
This cat flap is easy to install. Locking is done by sliding the white plastic screen into the outer side of the frame. Less fiddly than a turning lock mechanism. The flap is lightweight and my small cat manages it easily. The flap is clear plastic but not very see-through. I’ve noticed the cat stares a bit anxiously before going through, but at least she will use it. The cat flap (another brand) I had before was too heavy.
Great . Plain and simple. Ideal for a larger cat.
Brilliant. It’s In the back door so cat now has the freedom he likes without me keeping the back door open. Also he can go out in the night so no litter trays around any more
slender price for fat cats!
Fantastic catflap, easy to fit and nice and big for my rather rotund felines. Ironically though, the only reason I needed to buy it in the first place was the fact that a previous Amazon delivery driver destroyed our previous catflap by stuffing a parcel through it that was obviously too big, sending shattered pieces of catflap all over our hall way!!!! Thankyou Amazon.
Ideal cat flap for an area that does not need to be secured
I bought this cat flap for the gate into my back garden and the programmed cat flap into the house. The cat flap is inexpensive and ideal for this purpose.
Some wood had to be added to the surround to fit it which means it opens wider one way than the other. My cat loves it as he can sitting looking through it and get in and out of the garden more easily now that is is getting quite old.
door breaks easily
always use these for our staffs and sprollie very good and easy to refit however could do with purchasing just the swinging door as these break a lot and have to purchase the whole new one to replace. it does what it is meant to though and is good when new
Cat and dog flap
Best thing was it is now discontinued and you had one. Thank you.
Would recommend
If you have the right tools this is relatively easy to fit.
I see a few people have given bad reviews about it not opening correctly.
Thats down to it not being fitted properly. Well that’s what I think anyway.
I’ve bought the medium one and my rather stocky terrier fits through nicely. Until now I only had a small one and yesterday she got stuck in it!!!! So next day delivery was a god send.
Nice produc
Used this on a solid wood door into the garage for my indoor cats. Works really well, and after we got the cats used to it they now enjoy throwing themselves through it at lightning speed. So far it’s holding up pretty well considering the beatings its take
I bought this to replace a different cat flap that our puppy had chewed up a couple of years ago.
The instructions came with a cut out and use template which made installation easier than measuring with a tape. I stuck the template over my existing hole and trimmed to suit. If this was a first time installation, taping on the template and drilling the corners is the ideal way of knowing you are cutting out the correct sized hole.
I’d read a few reviews that it doesn’t open fully – they’re wrong. When installing, it’s easy to make sure it opens fully by opening the cat flap fully, then mark your 4 drill holes. If you do this it opens when fitted.
To seal closed, you can insert the hard plastic guard it comes with. You will get no visitors!
This is for fitting to a solid door and it comes with different length screws to fit to different thickness doors. My only reason for giving this 4 and not 5 stars is it didn’t come with washers, and the nuts are so small they pull through the plastic frame. I improvised using larger nuts as washers, but it irritated me that I had to improvise.
Fantastic value and very easy to fit and use.
Great magnetic flap, so it doesn’t swing in the wind. You can put down a solid backing so it can not be accessed like if you were going on holiday as an example. When open, it will not stop anything else coming in but I can’t see that being an issue where I live. Very impressed with product.
You need the following to fit –
Jigsaw Tool
Drill
Sandpaper
Tape Messurer
Glue
Saw (for cutting metal)
Just to name a few things, that isn’t mentioned above
Fantastic. It’s the only brand I’ll buy. Durable and easy to fit.
Fantastic brand cat flap. I bought It to replace a very old Pet Safe cat flap that has lasted really well, but looked a bit tired since having it for 17 years. I was redecorating so I bought a new one to look fresh. It fit beautifully with no extra adjustments to the door needed.
Happy with my flappy ;0)
Good item, excellent value, super fast delivery.
My flap has been fitted in a standard wooden internal door. Once fitted the inner part of the door can still be seen inbetween each side of the flap, not an issue in my situation, but it may be worth getting a flap with a tunnel if you have a UPVC door. There is no locking mechanism as such, but the flap is supplied with a solid piece of plastic that will slot into the flap to block use.
Very happy with item – recommended
Good Quality Doggy Door - Jack Russell and Dachshund
We fitted this dog door for my Jack Russell and Dachshund so that they can come in and out of the garden by themselves. Although the door is perfect and there is plenty of room for them to fit through (Dachshund is a little large) neither of them are able to figure out how to use it and my Jack Russell is nervous around the door flap and hasn’t figured out how to get through it. Apart from that ideal size, looks nice and in time hopefully will do the job!
A decent cat flap for a an average sized tom
Had a new door so wanted to replace the old tatty flap which banged in the wind. It is fitted into a plywood panel which sits in the central bottom panel of a door with fifteen glass panels. Himself was a little unsure of it at first as he has to hit it a little harder than before as the flap is held in place with a magnet but has got the hang of it now.
You can lock it by fitting a white plastic panel in to a slot in the inside which prevents the cat going in or out. This is a slight downside as the previous one could be adjusted to open just one way but in my case Himself just treats the place like an hotel and comes and goes whenever he likes. Cat is an adult male about 5 kilos and there is plenty of room for him to use it comfortably.
THEY NEVER CHANGE!
This is my third purchase of this item and each of its predecessors has lasted over 7 years of serious trashing by our exuberant terriers. The plastic outer flap seems to crack under the strain eventually but as the screw holes of the latest model fit the holes in the door exactly, and the entry/exit hole perfectly ,it can be preplaced in minutes! An excellent buy. I shall probably need a new one in 2027/2028 however!
Does the job time after time.
This is about the tenth of these we have bought over the last 22 years or so. They are really sturdy. I have four dogs/used to have five…. with one of those a Standard Poodle. I love to give my dogs the freedom to run in and out as they like within the confines of the garden. Despite constant, relentless usages these doors last really well. Eventually of course they break but buying them from this supplier is significantly cheaper than buying them from a high street pet store (even if you could at the moment (Coronovirus Lockdown)). In my opinion this is an excellent deal.
Excellent. A little noisy.
Very good value, dog was use to it in no time. Is a little noisy though, but for the price I was expecting that.
Cheap
Not much room for the fixing bolts, after cutting to size hole requirements.
Cheep and light duty but great value functional.
Ive fitted a few catflaps and these are the flimsiest bit also the cheepest. I wouldnt use this for my main catflap tbh and would step up a grade but these have been fitted to the shed. For the money no complaints at all.
Cheap and Cheerful.
Relatively easy to install with limited DIY tools and previous experience.
Very good value but not the most sturdy.
Medium dog flap
These have been an absolute godsend. They are noisy but I like that so I can hear when my old dog goes out. Both dogs learned v quickly how to use them. I got medium for my collies. One is 16.5kg short coat, other thicker coated and 18kg and the flaps (I got 2) are just fine for both.
Cat flap
Very good product for the money. Still not used however. Its not the products fault I have a stupid cat who fails to grasp how it works. Doh!!!
Good but could last longe
This is the third flap I’ve bought as they seem to last about a year before they break.
Cheap enough to replace and only 4 bolts to swap but a bit frustrating with the short longevity.
Still, it’s a perfect size and seals well against the elements so we keep buying the same one!
good produc
a bit difficult on certain doors – could handle more fixing options i.e. screw holes not so close to the flap – can be quite sticky
Catflap
Could do with better instructions in bigger writing, and found the magnet seems a bit too strong or was funny watching my cat with both feet on it keeping Pushing at it from the pot side trying to get in, it would end up banging his feet into it to get enought weight to open i
I had to also buy a flat panel for the pvc door which cost £90.
The cat can access it now, but when she comes in it sticks up, probably as she is coming up from step.
So beware.
Labour saving device: A simple cat flap to save your time and preserve your sanity!
Firstly, this is a simple, easy to use, entrance / exit for the cat of reasonable intelligence, requiring NO chips NO batteries and NO keys. This was a replacement unit, (the first one lasted twenty years and was destroyed by next door’s cat hurtling in to take refuge from something nasty with large teeth in our garden.). Fitting is simple, requiring a few simple tools and a modest amount of skill to cut a hole in the door. Since I was replacing a previous unit, I had no holes to drill, everything fitted first time. Consider this. The design has not changed in twenty years. In this day and age that’s not bad.
Looks great on my lobby door. I have 2 Bedlington terriers a 6 year old and a 1 year old who runs in and out to the garden all day. Now I don’t have to keep getting up to open the door for them
Good for dog and ca
Had a handy man come fit it glad I did took him an hour to do ! More complicated than the smaller cat one lots of cutting and measurements. my cocker spaniel was getting stuck so needed a bigger one. Pushes it open both dog n cat easily enough. Stays open with winds but only when they have just gone through it and it’s still flapping have to push it shut, so could make room cold. No in or out lock just a slide in panel.
Simple, basic flap.
A simple, no frills flap, as you’d expect at this price. Comparatively easy to install, the only two observations I’d make are that the available space between the main hole and the screw (bolt) holes is very limited, meaning the margin of error in cutting the main hole is small. Cut too wide and the bolts won’t have any material to bite into. Secondly, the bolts are a very tight fit against the body of the flap, meaning they’re a bit awkward to tighten without damaging the frame.
All in all, a simple plastic flap that will hopefully be adequate for the purpose.
Works well!
It works well! We wanted to try a normal cheap flap before considering a microchip sensor one in the future. It’s lightweight, so pup can push through easily from 2months ish. Has a magnet to catch the flap and keep it in place; not amazing in a storm, but you can’t have it both ways! Has an additional flap insert so that you can lock it at night etc.
Bit fiddly to fi
Difficult to fit – large selection of bolts and nuts most of which are far to small. Ended up glueing it to the door!
Purrfec
One of my cat’s kept developing a sore on the side which I thought was caused by him coming in and out of the Cat Flap so purchased this in the hope that a pet flap would let him in easier. He no longer has that and comes and goes as he pleases along with the others.
Cat flap
Great door for the cats to get in and out.
A friend fitted it for me into a piece of wood and replaced a glass panel on the side of the door.
Looks good, bangs a bit but hopefully the cats will get used to it.
As the weather is nice I have attached a string to keep it open so the can get used to using it.
My older cat used it the next day and was in and out of it, a new game for her.
My kitten has used it but I think once he see’s his mum in and out he will follow.
Probably being a bit unfair here, but I have had to replace the product every 12 to 18 months because of my very lively Yorkshire Terrier who dives headlong through the flap on a regular basis. The flap does well to withstand this battering, but the white frame that acts as a draught excluder eventually breaks off. Having said that, I always buy another Staywell replacement, as the medium size is perfect for my two dogs, a corgi and the aforementioned rather destructive yorkie, and given the weakness in the draught-frame, I would still recommend it for similar pets.
Easy to replace
The previous cat flap, same make, had deteriorated over the years it had been exposed to the sun. The company were very helpful in identifying the replacement model and it arrived quickly and was easily fitted. One happy cat!
An excellect basic cat flap
Our old Staywell cat flap was destroyed by a flapping pigeon that our cat decided to bring in, so I had to buy this to replace it. It fitted exactly, with the screw holes in the same place, so it was just what was needed. It comes intwo parts, the hinged flap on the outside and an inner section with a drop-down white plastic closure for when you need to lock the flap.
The cats like the new flap better than the old one, as the centre window (with the PetSafe logo) has a completely clear area through which they can spy on what’s going on in the garden. They are not comfortable with opaque flaps.
Cost effective, basic cat flap. Installation a little tedious, some cats may find it a challange
What I mean by challenge is because the white border covering the magnets is movable, my cat’s paw sometimes gets stuck when she withdraws her hand away from the flap. She isn’t the brightest bulb, but it did stop her from going outside as she couldn’t figure it out.
Installation was okay, but you have to ensure you have the tools to cut your screws down to size. The package comes with 3 sets of screws of varying length, but you will need to cut them to size. If not, the flap won’t work…
Otherwise, great size hole for the shape and size with good magnets to keep the wind out, but your cat freely moving!
Cat flap you can fire proof
This is a great basic simple design cat flap, the advantage is euro gaff do a frame you can fit it to to use it in a fire door, this means you can improve the fire security of you home to prevent spreading of smoke and fire. The flap is such a sleek and simple design it is very easy for cats to get the hang of using and really easy to wipe clea
Effective but locking flap changed
I bought this as a replacement as the previous one had a warped frame. The new one, however, had the word Petsafe embossed on the locking flap which meant that it caught on the frame, so I have to use the locking flap from the old one. This is a design fault which I consider could have been predicted and hope that this will be changed, either leaving the word off altogether or making sure it is flush with the flap This cat flap is, however, the most secure I have come across, as cats cannot burst through it when locked in the way they can with the four-way one with knobs. I would buy it again but the design fault mentioned above does need attention.
Good value,good quality
I love this brand very good value for money and if your wanting added extras they have a lot of choice with added features but I’m happy with basic model.I had this for 2yrars and was working fine but unfortunately was broken ( funnily enough was broken because delivery men kept forcing my parcels through it and they snapped clip that door swung on) ordered exact replacement removed old frame and slotted this one in its place ,once hole is cut they are very simple to install basically 4screws) cat Is happily in and out again and I have a door on flap again so no gale blowing up stairs
Simple and effective but LOUD
Yeah it’s a cheap and cheerful flap, but it’s quite solidly built, but my goodness it is loud! If I didn’t know better I’d say my cat always runs as fast as she possibly can before diving through and commando rolling. But no, she’s old and fat, it’s just a loud cat flap
Does the job
This does the job well and was easy to fit, however the inner panels were very deep – I assume it was meant to be for a wall not a door. To save myself trying to trim them down, I have the inside of the door exposed. Doesn’t inhibit it’s useability though
Don't Lost the Nuts!
Generally very pleased with this, which my neighbour fitted for me, but he had trouble with the tiny nuts, which are really small and fiddly, and also the bolts that they fixed onto were VERY soft – they were bending as he cut them to size, which means they are not very good quality. However, now it is in place it looks good, and the cats appreciate the clear screen as they were nervous about what was the other side of the cat flap on my old solid-flap cat-flap. One cat is using it voluntarily and the other has gone through with a helping shove from me, so hopefully will get used to it soon.
I needed to keep my cat’s food safe from flies and dog. You cat owners will know that if another animal so much as looks at a cat’s food you end up throwing it away. However, looking at the prices of commercial food protectors I decided to make my own.
I covered a large cardboard box with Fablon. Very cheerful and easy to use and clean. Cat has not given an opinion yet! I put this cat flap in the front but left the back open. I then jammed it against the wall. Now all I have to do is pull the box away from the wall put the food in and put it back. I am going to add a mesh covered opening in the top for the summer.
Pet doo
For the price this pet door is good value. It is made of plastic and therefore a bit flimsy but will probably withstand my dog “crashing” through it for the foreseeable future. I had one of these before in a previous property and the plastic became a little brittle after a few years and I had to repair if a few times when the plastic inner frame broke. I suspect that the same thing will happen again in a few year’s time. Let’s wait and see, but for the price it is still worth it…
... original cat doors in the past and find them better than the new fangled ones
Have had these original cat doors in the past and find them better than the new fangled ones. Less draught. Unfortunately not big enough for the hole already in door. My fault, I intend to order a medium sized one.
Good product. Used this type and size for many years.
I’ve been using this exact type and size (medium) for 19 years in our current and previous house. We currently have two working type cocker spaniels and previously had two show type cockers. This size was/is fine for all of them. With a ramp and platform at both sides they all easily managed the flap installed at adult dog height when they were very small puppies. We also had no difficulty with this arrangement with a fully grown dog and puppy both using the flap. They are reasonably well made but I’ve had to replace them (or parts of them) every 3-4 years. I’m think spare parts are available separately but in terms of value for money I have always bought whole units and held on to any usable parts (which I have reused a over the years as far as possible before buying another door). One big plus is that the original template that fits to the door has remained constant, which is what has allowed me to replace without needing a new door or panel. Ours is currently set in a static UPVC panel rather than a door frame. I don’t think the usable product lifetime reflects poor quality. I may originally have thought a dog would gently nudge the flap open and carefully step though. No such thing with any of ours. Once they have the hang of these, the treat the flap as invisible and crash (very noisily) through it while running at full tilt. So, to be fair, they really do get a battering all day every day.
The main downside is the draft and heat loss. When the inner shutter isn’t down, a strong wind will blow the flap open. I think this is unavoidable if the magnetic latch has to be loose enough to allow dogs to crash through it without injury.
Great for my Dogs, The Cats Refuse to Use it. Little Sods.
Finally, I am almost, no longer a Doorman for the Cats and Dogs that reside with us. Getting up every five minutes to open the door.
The Dogs love it, they are in and out and have a new found freedom, it’s made them happy.
The Cats are awkward little so and so’s and refuse to use it, instead, meowing at my window at 4 am to come inside and then wanting to go out the front door at 4.05am as a bleeding shortcut.
The door looks good from the outside but the inside is not as ...
The door looks good from the outside but the inside is not as nice as one can see the cut away door edges. Otherwise a very nice product that stands up to the charging through it by our poodle/maltese cross.
Arrived quickly. easy to fit despite my having a double glazed stable door and is a replacement for one that’s lasted me 10 years or so; I bought the same sort again as it worked so well. Might sound odd, if you think it should last forever but I’ve not got a cat – I’ve got 7 Jack Russell Terriers who have invented a game which I suspect might be called “Race you from the front of the house to the bottom of the garden, through the flap and Last one throughs a sissy” They play it for hours at a time; if it can stand up to that then it’s good. I should also mention that the old one only needed replacing because because I got fed up with the stream of furry bods tearing through the kitchen and put the door slider in when they were outside to try and get a bit of peace. Err! they ‘dug’ through and ate frame!
The design is good, but the flap gets broken easily
We have had about 4 of these in the last 6 years. The design is good, but the flap gets broken easily, having said that it’s always been when our French Bulldog has been chasing the cat at full speed through the flap!
Good product - could be cheape
Good product, but I generally only manage about a year out of these before one of dogs launch themselves through the flap and literally smash it. I suspect the plastic does become brittle over time and breaks more easily.
I feel the product could be cheaper, but as a consumer needs must.
Good Value Catflap
Good value and ideal for our cat. Step by step instructions and easy to follow, even though me being a man, I ignored most of them and ended up making a bit of a mess! Fits well and covers the hole perfectly, like the magnetic parts which helps keep flap in place.
Good dog/cat flap. When fitted properly looks good in the door. However after, say a year of being fitted and being subjected to full sunshine, the clear plastic goes a yellowish colour as does the white shrouding. Also with regular use by our pets the flap starts to crack and can eventually break off. You can replace the flap, but means taking the whole thing apart.
Have had several, because at the end of the day a Good value product.
I bought this for my Staffordshire Bull Terrier because after training her to ring a bell to let her go outside, after getting up every 15 minutes to open and shut the back door I thought I either train her to shut the door when she came back in or purchase a dog flap!
So I purchased the dog flap… I went for the medium as she’s approximately 15kg. When it came I was mmm looked a little small, so I ordered the the large also, well I felt a bit like Goldilocks at this point as it was massive. Anyway after a bit of coaxing managed to see her go through the medium.
I volunteered my pa to fit it into my vintage back door. The instructions seemed relatively straightforward… I thought.
Just a word of warning and the reason for the four stars was the template is not correct (according to my pa) by one eighth (whatever that means think it’s roughly 10mm) if he had cut the hole out according to the template he would have been fitting the bolts into the hole
Another thing to keep in mind is that if you don’t have a flat door you will need to accommodate the gap. He needed to fit extra pieces of wood.
Anyway he managed to do the job bless him… wasn’t a quick job, a few hours or more. You need to cut the bolts to size also to the thickness of the door. (I have popped some pictures to show.
Well my pooch has gone through it a few times with treats but think it will take a bit more training, also the outside step is higher so she needs to jump up and through, although she can do it, she’s a determined little monkey
The plastic is a bit flimsy, but for money paid I wouldn’t complain.
So if you have the skills or know someone who does and not on an expensive door this is ok and my door was battered anyway so I wasn’t losing much if it didn’t work .
I’m just hoping I will be able to sit for a whole hour now without having to open the back door!! That would be bliss!!
UPDATE!
Ok this is the best thing I’ve done!! It’s been a week so I can’t comment on longevity but as for my sanity and peace It’s great! She comes and goes whenever she pleases! Plus I’m nice a toasty cos the door is not letting in all the cold air (positive for the Enviromentalist… using less energy on heating) plus I can chill for longer than 15 minutes.
My pa did also update me about the template issue… I said it was incorrect but it is soooo exact that if the drill hole wanders just slightly you would end up in the main hole and not square up to meet the inside piece.
Definitely recommend it so far!
Ps my pooch now uses it to escape bath time I didn’t account for that but luckily there is a cover to block it off!!
Bought this type of catflap for installing in one of our sheds where we keep rabbits and guinea pigs. I have not bought this type of catflap before for use in the house for our cats as I don’t particularly like the design. I got these because they were cheaper than others I looked at, and because they were only going in the shed. However, they work well in the shed. The rabbits have got used to using them so they can get in to and out of the shed from and to the outside runs – one on each side of the shed – I know, they are spoilt! Because the guinea pigs can’t open them – they’re not that strong – the catflaps are left propped open during the day so they can get in and out too. At night the catflaps are closed, still allowing the rabbits egress and access but not the piggies. They also stop rats / mice getting in. I also like the sliding partition for completely shutting off access and egress if necessary. Overall, the catflaps serve their purpose in the shed, and I can’t find fault in them, which is why I’m giving 5 stars. As I’ve mentioned, though, I would not have bought these for use by our cats.
I’ve bought this type of flap before so I know what to expect. It’s useful for me because it includes a slide in panel to totally lock the door as my cats just barge their way through a 4way mechanism. Negatives would be the position of the screw holes, very close to the edge of the frame you have to be very accurate with your cut out. Also there is no filler/tunnel with this so you see the raw edges of the door inside the flap. Positives, comes with 3 different lengths of bolts so should be something for all doors. I put mine in the garden gate and used the medium length. It’s fairly generous for a small flap, my large cat has managed to bring himself and a flapping pigeon through it! The colour is nice just as shown I’ve seen some brown flaps are a fake wood grain this is just glossy dark brown. Well that’s as much as you can say about a cat flap really.
works well
It works like a dream and my cocker spaniels now have access to the garden, and have got over their initial fear. I would give it 5*, but the screws were in very awkward places, making the fitting of it very fiddly. Hoping it will stop the howling gale that the old pet flap let through, but won’t know until the weather worsens.
Excellent value
This is the second one purchased, the first having broken around the flimsy side of the door frame but not complaining it lasted many years of use. It is easy to install and simple design. We have it fitted in place of a glass pane so its slim profile makes it ideal whereas some flaps are deep for brick holes. Excellent value if you want a basic doo
Got this to replace one I had fitted 10 years ago but has now disintegrated due to weathering and sunlight. Comes with several sets of screws – but sadly none of them fitted the thickness of my door. I was able to remove three old screws(thanks WD40!) and fit the new door – the 4th had to be sawn off and I’m now hunting a replacement. The door is said to match the earlier models – and 99% it does, but the swing flap is a couple of mm wider so I will have to file it down to stop it catching. The fitting, like the original, does not fit flush with the door, so, as before, some sealant will be required. (This may not be a problem for everyone, but my builders who installed the original when I had an extension built had this problem.) That all said, it looks good and the drop down door seal/lock works fine. Once I’ve ironed out these quibbles I’m sure I’ll get another 10 years. I was relieved to find that the screw holes do match those of the original door.
When I live with mum I got one of these for our cat Shabbie so she could come in to my bed room and go as she pleased not just for leting the cat out but so you can keep you bedroom door closed she took some training I told her you just cannot learn to reach the door handle it is not your fault Shabbie it the crazy people whom design doors the forget about the small people(cats n dogs n fish what ever keeps you company. ) one of these would be in every door of my home unfortunately I now live in a small one roon flat no room for a cat ………..thats life

Just bought my third (keep moving) and I like the fact it has a sliding panel on the inside that you can use to keep your animal in and all others out without the need for a transmitter around the pet’s neck. My only gripe is that the fixing holes are SO CLOSE to the edge – like about 2mm – so you have to be ultra accurate when cutting the hole. Make it too big and you have nowhere for the fixing screws but if you cut it ever so slightly under-size then the flap won’t open.
Perfect for my needs and good service
Arrived very quickly, is exactly as described, fits perfectly in the place of he old one that my cat’s broke 2 nights ago. Couldn’t be happier. 🙂
I select this one as I don’t want to keep other peoples cats out (there are some local cats who are sometimes left out in bad weather and take shelter in my house, my cats don’t seem to mind so I don’t). If you need one that can be used to keep other cats out you will need a more expensive model with a collar magnet lock or a chip scanner. If not, this is ideal.
Perfect for my needs and good service.

Comes with a hard plastic flap and a rubber one. the hard plastic one is ok but if you have a crazy dog who loves to throw herself through the door it can crack. And if you have a friend visit with her dog who doesnt know what a dog flap is, dont shut the door with the dog on the outside as when it paws at the flap it will break the outer frame.
This is cheap and cheerful. No options for keeping cats in or out, and it makes a loud noise when it falls shut. It would be irritating if fitted in an external door if it was a windy day. I have it fitted in an internal door though, so need not worry about strange cats or wind.
It’s very basic, but the build quality is sound. As long as your needs are simple, this is a good buy.

Bought to replace the old one (same make) which was used daily by my lively Jack Russell and lasted 7 years. Not sure this one will last as long though as it doesn’t seem to be made from the same material, looks and feels less robust.
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Lasted just over 4 years, same amount of use from small lively Jack Russell. This one didn’t weather as well as it yellowed on the outside, needed to replace as the rim on the flap split and a small crack appeared on the transparent plastic. Still, it did last a lot longer than I thought it would.
Personally would prefer to pay a bit more for bit better quality. Would buy again, not too soon I hope!!
New, not bette
Good quality door but I have had a few over the years an now to cut corners ( save them money on production)
The blank that you slide in to hold shut the flap is now very flimsy and no longer has a slide lock but its now a push catch which a clever dog may knock open.
Petsafe Staywell 2 way pet door looks very tidy and sma
We have had one of these 2 way pet door before and was satisfied with it. It is a good price, easy to fit and fairly strong, although our cocker spaniel who is no light weight does go crashing through when chasing cats and damaged the last one, but on the whole it is robust and I would recommend i
Excellent Product Easy to Fit, so much so that I have purchased three of these items!
The product is excellent and the Aftersales service is second to none!
The product is easy to fit into a UPVC door panel just a bit of DIY Knowledge and basic tools are required
I had a problem with one item and was advised to contacted the aftersales division based in Ireland it was Lauren the Customer Care Specialist who immediately sorted out my issue and the parts dispatched and arrived very quickly.
I also have a Petsafe cat flap which is equally as good!
Does the Job very well ...
This is the fourth (or fifth?) Petsafe Staywell Original Which we’ve bought over the years we’ve owned felines. They work well, The magnet strong enough to hold it closed against the strongest wind.
The fourth was bought for a through wall tunnel (one on the ‘outside’ wall, one, ‘inside’ the kitchen. I’m sure that any Cat (like ours … a muggy … will get used to this flap.
Less expensive (in my experience) bought from the Rain Forest, the reason for four stars is simply that on each of the four we’ve bought, the top frame moulding has split. Other than this, used daily this is a robust product and recommend.
Great little doo
I have had 3 of these, only because my staffy crashes through it and eventually he breaks them, the cats use it with ease and it is just the ticket for the dog too, no more worrying about getting back to let them out should I happen to be having a busy day like Christmas shopping lol, it is recommended to have the next size up for my staff but he copes with this size very well as it was first installed when he was a puppy. However if I were to replace the door I would probably now go for the new metal one just because my dog is a bit fast when someone knocks on the door and tends to smash through it like a bolt out of hell hehe, but saying that only 3 in 5 years isn’t bad when I see what it goes through.
Good doo
Great product, we are now on our second in 5 years and two houses, the dog goes through it at pace and has broken off the white swinging bit of plastic but this has not really affected the door.
If you have a puppy to train just prop it open and have one of you inside one outside with treats and call it back and forth, after the first trip through lower the door a bit then all the way, ours picked it up in about 2 minutes and was immedietly house trained. Getting her to sit was a much longer process.
If you have a secure garden and a cockerspaniel ish size dog this takes a lot of the pain out of owning a dog as it will go out when it wants a wee without waking you up at silly o clock, you can also lock the door when your away so you dont have to worry about cats getting into your house.
I’ve had many flaps for dogs and cats in my time and having moved house needed a new flap for my collie / lab to go in and out. This was a very good price compared to others I have bought and is slightly smaller than my last flap, but I didnt want anything too big. It is fairly lightweight, and so is easily managed by my ten month old kitten as well. But becuase the flap is lightwieght it does tend to stay open in very high wind. I put the cover in place on this particularly stormy night, but you could also glue some metal weights to the flap to help it close. The flap comes with a slide in cover, so is secure when you want to shut your animals in or are away. It also comes with a sleeve to put between the front and back opening in your door which is good and can be easily cut to size. The only downside of this flap is the design makes it difficult to screw to the wood and there may be a prob with thinner wood splitting, as the screw holes are very close to the opening you have just cut – they could design this with a slightly bigger rim to resolve this prob. It comes with a paper guide, but my huband said it was not very accurate, in the end he just used the flap itself to mark out the most accurate hole to cut and screw holes to fit. It can also be used for pvc and mdf doors.
An open and shut case
This is the second one of these I have bought. The first one fell apart after 11 years of constant use by my Jack Russell dog which, I have no complaints about. The new one makes a bit of a noise similar to the first one when used but for the price I think it is good value for money. I priced this product at a local pet store and it cost 32 the one on Amazon was 17, no contest.
I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a reasonably priced hatch door, fitting is pretty easy with a bit of DIY skill and the right tools, instructions are clear and there is a template to enable accurate fitting. It keeps out the rain and wind and can be blocked off when not in use.
If it has a down side it would be that it does not prevent unwanted visitors gaining entry. For this you will need one with a magnetic or electronic locking device.
