Not quite as powerful as my previous iron but it’s less expensive so on balance it’s fine. Heats up quickly and the water tank is large.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersThe XT100C steam generator has the advantage over conventional irons in that it doesn’t require topping up with water, and so is suited to big ironing sessions.

In common with most steam generators it consists of a large water chamber which generates the steam — in this case at 7.5 bar pressure, and a cable which attaches the main unit with the iron.

Controls are easy to operate, with four heat settings — silk, wool and cotton (which relate to the settings normally denoted as * ** and ***), and also a universal setting.

The iron unit is well shaped with a sharp pointed nose and rounded rear to facilitate crevices corners, and it will sit either on top of the steam boiler or on the ironing board using the detachable base plate which comes off of the boiler to allow it to be placed on the ironing board. The boiler unit is small enough to enable it to sit on the ironing board but I prefer it on the floor with the iron placed on the board for ease of use.

Three lights on the irons handle show the heat status — yellow means heating up, blue means ready for use, flashing blue means cooling down and red means out of water. I like this sleek and easy to see system, and the cork handle is comfortable to use. The unit takes just two minutes to heat up from cold. The steam pulse is 500g and there’s the usual vertical steam ironing capability as with most such units.

It’s a well-constructed, solid generator with an attractive appearance, which it should be considering it’s at the upper price range for a steam generator.
