What Are Sea-Monkeys? The Science Behind the Iconic Pet
Sea-Monkeys are a type of tiny brine shrimp created by scientists in the 50s. These sci-fi creatures’ eggs are held in a kind of suspended animation called Cryptobiosis until you activate them in your Sea-Monkeys aquarium using the kit provided with every tank.
Sea-Monkeys are an educational living science experiment that kids and adults have loved ever since they were created. Activating the eggs is a valuable opportunity to learn from seeing biology in action, and fascinating to watch for all ages. Once your Sea-Monkeys hatch you will be able to observe their full life cycle in real time, watching them grow as you feed them.
Sea-Monkeys are a great present for children who want a pet. Your kids will learn the importance of caring for living things and their environment, all on a manageable scale.

How to Create the Perfect Sea-Monkeys Habitat – Tips for Sea-Monkeys Owners
Here are our top tips for getting the most out of your Sea-Monkeys:
1. Water temperature– It is vital that you refer to the temperature chart on the instruction leaflet, the colder the water the longer it will take for your Sea-Monkeys eggs to hatch. The ideal temperature for the fastest hatching is between 24 and 27 degree Celsius.
2. Egg anatomy– All Sea-Monkeys eggs vary in shell thickness, therefore those with thinner shells hatch faster and those with thicker shells take longer. This is natural biological variation.
3. Healthy light- Place your tank in a north-facing window so that it gets light, but not directly in sunlight. This will help algae to grow which the Sea-Monkeys eat.
4. Feeding- Feed your Sea-Monkeys only when the water is clear, too much food will cause them to suffocate.
5. Evaporation- If you notice the water level decreasing in your tank refill with bottled drinking water which is at the same temperature as the tank water.
6. Help! If your Sea Monkeys experience falls short of your expectations please contact our customer services team and they will be happy to help you.

Our daughter eldest keeps asking for a pet put don’t really know if she will be interested and we said let’s see how it goes with the sea monkeys. It took more than seven days to see them and at so tempted to say it was a failure but now we can see them and she give them names even. Brilliant kit for curious minds!
so bought these in March 2022 and they lasted till July 2023, didn’t take much to keep them alive just followed instructions and left them on the fire place, topped water up occasionally to the line and in the end was only feeding once a week, if you think there is nothing there try adding a little water so some of the rubbish from the bottom swirls round and give it a day or 2 as there may be some babies. just make sure not to keep picking up the tank and moving it around as that is what my nephew kept doing and his didn’t last so long.
These were the best sea monkeys I’ve purchased in the many years of purchasing. They have continued to breed. Definitely advise using the hottest area for them to hatch. Sea monkeys also enjoy bright lights (gets them more active). Definitely recommend.
Bought for my kids who were excited to see all the promised sea monkeys.
After a few days- one hatched. But it’s huge and I wonder if it ate all the others before they had a chance.
I followed the instructions to a T and I have so many sea monkeys! I think they’re adorable it’s super hard to get a decent photo of them though! One tip though, now it’s summer I’ve moved them away from the window as the water was getting too hot for them and killed a few! They’re on a table near the window and now I have two that are pregnant and tonnes of babies
It is a good value educational sort of product but my only gripe is WHY do you not allow customers to select a colour? It can’t be that hard surely?
Annoyingly I got this for my sons 6th birthday and guess what colour we got…Yep… PINK! .
I have fond memories from about 20 years ago when me and my cousin brought these exact kits!
We were in constant competition on whos would grow the biggest, until one hot summers day, I became the victor!
He had kept his on the windowsill over a scorching hot summer and they eventually boiled to death so be careful where you put them… they are supposed to like direct sunlight but if you see them squirming about, it might mean they are on the verge of boiling to death.
I have never seen or heard of these kits failing to hatch.
They are just super simple to setup and my kids were hyped waiting for them to hatch and grow.
The novelty does wear off with the kids though and the tank just ends up taking up windowsill space, with the sea monkeys just aimlessly swimming about with no real ambitions or enjoyment in life.
As long as they are happy, I will let them live out their days in the windowsill…
A batch of sea monkeys are for life not just for Christmas!
Very easy to setup and use. At the moment they are very small but the are fascinating to watch. Very happy with them.
I bought one for myself (49 yo) and my friend’s 11 yo daughter for Xmas. We live chatted with each other on 1st Jan as we added the eggs, and we’ve been comparing notes ever since.
I keep them on the window sill in my home office and I love watching them swimming and growing. They’re simple, fun, easy to care for and inexpensive. Be warned though, this kit may be a gateway tank. I’ve got an aquarium with a sunken galleon on the way to transfer them to
My husband bought me these instead, I set it all up and it sits on the radiator to keep them warm, we are now the proud parents of about 15
Made a nice Christmas present for my 4 year old, at first it looked like none was alive but after a week we saw about 6 swimming around. It’s been intense to see them grow.
Nephews (4 & 6) really love it. I might even buy my own set because of the nostalgia I have of them when I was a kid. They hatched in about 2 days & are going well I’ve heard! Kids love to look at them & the light helps make it more interesting for them
Got one for myself and my friend as an Xmas gift.
Even though my uni studio was pretty damn cold because the heating was broken, they still hatched after around 2 days. They have definitely grown from October (when I got them) to early December and I did see a few more babies there. However, I had to return home and have not yet seen them so they haven’t been fed for about a month and 3 weeks (when I go back). I don’t know if they’re alive and I will be very sad if they have crossed the rainbow bridge I did prep them by giving them a lot more food than usual and they are teeny tiny, so maybe there is hope? I will update when I am back
Update: one survived for sure! Another I found was moving and was too weak to swim 🙁
Friend is planning to raise them when she’s back at uni
My sin loves watches his new sea monkeys grow! Great first ‘pet’ to see if your child is ready for the next steps in responsibility.
Bought as present. Well received and easy to set up. All instructions are easy to use and the sachets all have clear instructions on also.
Had sea monkeys before so we bought this little set. Didn’t get any sea monkeys, they didn’t hatch. Not sure why as our last ones lived quite a while
Not been open as yet as it’s for Christmas but look really cool
You will need to be really patient if it’s colder, it took ours over 7 days to hatch, we only had a couple hatching 3 days in and I was growing concerned that the little one would be disappointed but we’re now on day 10 and several more are visible swimming around. Just make sure to follow the instructions right!
These are so easy to get started. My son loved his when he was little and they grew really well. I know my granddaughter will love them too
I used to have Sea Monkeys as a child, I came across these sets so thought I would give them a try!
I had eggs hatching within the first 24 hours!
I’m so happy I’m going to buy a few more kits! 🙂
After good week of patience and hope that these little guys will hatch it happened!! Pretty much do as the paper says, yes you need to wait as much as possible and observe the tank every day till they start swim!
Definitely a lot of growth from them when done right and very fun to watch! Some of the tips for success is using bottled water, warm room water temperatures, aerating daily -with a pippette or stirring, first feed on day 5 and indirect sunlight.
Packet #1 included the right amount of minerals for PH and salinity and other than topping up the water when it reduces, adding other than that will likely kill sea monkeys.
Egg can take six weeks the hatch so if they all die, some eggs may hatch later!
Bought for a friend as he had been talking about sea monkeys. Worked as it should, the sea monkeys are now alive and visible
I brought this for my daughter for Christmas but I know she is going to love it, I’m very interested with how this works and how they grow as never seen animals like this before
bought this item for my daughter even thou she is an adult she loved it would recommend this produc
My kids love these ,really easy to set up they loved waiting for them to hatch now we have loads, brilliant, would recommend
Exactly how I remember in childhood. Perfect fun for kids and adults and really easy to use. Mine are still alive too
