Super Blu-Ray set. Far better then I thought is was going to be. To bad there did not have the isolated music track on The City on The Edge of Forever. The extras make this set worth having for any Star Trek collector like myself. Yes I have the whole series on Blu-Ray, but having isolated music tracks and new audio commentaries makes this great. As far as the packaging goes it is hands down awesome looking. It has a very nice and heavier outer slipcover with the Blu-Rays in the own box inside it. And over the whole thing is a clear sleeve to protect the collection, nice job on that for sure. Short note, you may like to keep out the Blu-Ray case to keep the outer sleeve in good condition.

Once more and final thoughts on this set. Looks and sounds great, for any collector of Star Trek or just someone who watch’s once in awhile. Buy it you will not be disappointed trust me.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersWho is this Star Trek box set for really? Actually it covers both sides. For the average fan you get 12 episodes in one neat little package, but for the hard-core Trekkie (like me) you get the leftover scraps of anything that didn’t appear in the original show. Strangely, all those bloopers you’ve seen on the Internet a million times actually aren’t here, and you have to sit through 3 hours of talking-head documentaries to see what you do get. Sorta a crummy way to celebrate Trek’s 50th Anniversary (the Directors Khan was a more important release for it), but better than nothing I guess. At least it gave Shatner a chance to set the record straight as to why he didn’t show up to Nimoy’s funeral (sorry, excuse not good enough Bill, bad Kirk). To the fan in between, because of the inability to see the new F/X version with say commentary tracks, or to listen to the Isolated Music Track but only in classic visual mode, you’re better off buying ” The Complete Series “.

Rather than present all the extra footage, this blu ray simply has great documentaries about it and presents a small portion of it as supplements to the 12 episodes presented.

They should just release all the extra footage.

But these 50+ year episodes look stunning on blu ray!

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersTakes to long to show you the good stuff. I just want to see the vaulted items not sit through hours of documentary to fill 15 minutes of footage.

If you are expecting a raw dump of reels of outtake footage, this set is not for you. The documentaries are more than informative. They put in context the outtake footage shown. Important historical notes are included, some of which were only hearsay until this set came out, displaying the evidence for all to see. The interviews are fascinating, nostalgic and revelatory. Some of the outtakes are astonishing, including evidence that the infamous scripted coda for “Who Mourns For Adonais” was actually filmed.

There are hints that there is yet more footage to be released, and therein lay my only want, that this set had contained more found footage. In this I will have to trust the editors/curators.

The episodes chosen for this set are available with both original and remastered effects, but included are special features not seen on the Original Series’ Blu-Ray first release: audio commentaries on three episodes, as well as isolated music scores on ten of them. Those features make this set nearly worth the purchase without the Vault material.

Are you an Original Series Star Trek fan, who loves to learn about what went on behind the scenes? Don’t hesitate. Get this set!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersAs a big-time Star Trek fan, I’m aware of how Hollywood takes advantage of us rabid fans, over-charging for items that should be much less. I’ve read some of the reviews for this item, complaining how there is little new content. They are right–there isn’t that much new content here. I also read how they created filler by adding episodes we already have in other dvds–right once again. We didn’t really need to have these. But then, I pretty much expected all of this. We’re dealing with scraps of footage never seen before, I expected scraps, and I got scraps. This is a collection of over-priced scraps, omitted scenes from the beloved episodes we’ve seen so many times. It was great to see updated interviews with those dwindling few who are still alive. There was quite a bit of filler, but I was still satisfied watching it. Just don’t expect large volumes of unseen material. Trek fans over-pay for anything Star Trek related–this is what we do. And this is why Hollywood does what it does.

If you have the Full Series blu ray this feels like a double dip, the extras are OK but somewhat lack luster. But if you just want some Greatest hits type Blu ray It’s definitely great quality and a good mix of Classic TOS episodes.

For those of us who are fans of the original series, who grew up watching it, finding a treasure chest like this is truly amazing. Imagine watching episodes you know so well but now you are able to view scenes shot from a different Angles, and sometimes even different dialogue. And if you’re a fan of the Enterprise presented here for the first time are beautiful behind the scenes blue screen tracking shots of the 11 foot model. Also included are re mastered fan favorite episodes. A must for fans, highly recommended.

People seem to be reviewing this as if it was something it isn’t. It is not a box set of the series. That exists already. It is not a special edition, or directors cut with new footage edited in. It is simply a “best of” kind of set with a few of the better known episodes, great for a casual fan that wants a few episodes, but don’t need or want the whole series. Die hard Trek fans (that often seem impossible to please) get annoyed they have to buy episodes they already own to get the special features. That is silly. If they sold just the extra footage, almost no one would buy it. It makes total sense to do it this way.

Bottom line, it’s great for a causal fan that wants a few of the better episodes, or to introduce someone to the show, It’s great for a Trekkie like me that wants to see raw footage unavailable before.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe Roddenberry Vault blu-ray collection is great. I love seeing the never before seen video from TOS Star Trek, especially shots of the Enterprise model. My complaint was that there wasn’t enough out-takes and alternate scenes. You would thing that there are more than enough old unseen footage available that CBS Video could have devoted the entire three disk collection with never before seen Star Trek, without having to pad the disks with remastered episodes.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersStar Trek TOS collectors’ delight! A “must have” for English, Spanish, & German-speaking Star Trek TOS fans!
    – Very pleasantly surprised the language options included German! Nice to finally see them on an American TV/Blu-Ray without a region restriction problem.
    – The documentaries are fantastic for those of us who enjoyed TOS during the original seasons’ airings on network TV.
    – I was hoping the episodes would have had an option to see episodes with the previously cut scenes inserted where they would have been before editing.
    Overall, very pleased.

A "must have" for English, Spanish, & German-speaking Star Trek TOS fans!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI offer this criticism from a LONG-time TOS-fan. OVERpriced. All of the features would have easily fit on a single, reasonably priced, disc. Yet Paramount/CBS, which has been selling TOS-episodes over and over again since the VHS-days, cannot resist it’s decades-old impulses to cash in on TREK’s fans in the most blatant ways possible – as evidenced by this collection. Unless you’re in a hurry to buy this, like I did (lol), perhaps it’s best to wait until it’s price-reduced or released in a single-disc edition.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’m only halfway through, but I have to say this is a wonderful set. Personally, I could just watch hours of the lost footage, but I understand that this may not be as marketable as what they came out with. As with other DVD/BR Trek releases, I found it a little light on the commentary tracks, but the go-to is really the documentaries.

And if you are hard-pressed getting the complete BR set of TOS, this is an excellent collection of greatest hits.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe Roddenberry Vault is a wonderful gift for all Star Trek fans in celebration of Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. This is a real treat to be able to see scenes that were cut from episodes, alternate takes as well as behind the scenes material. The interview with William Shatner may be the best he has ever given about working on the Star Trek television series. There are so many gems in this 3 disc set that I find it impossible to mention them all. Needless to say, if you are a fan of the original series, this is a must have. My thanks to all who were involved in the production of this set.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersThis past year for me has been about reuniting the love affair with TOS. The depth and love and blood, sweat and tears that went into it not only makes me appreciate the series even more (as well as notice things that I never had before) but it’s also inspiring to me as a writer, because I’m creating my own sort of universe with lots of details and characters but overall a simple unifying theme. You can see that the series had that, but also the people who made it had a single unifying love for the concept. It’s like wherever you go, keep your eyes on the simple vision. Do that and you’ll always stay true to it. I’ve finished watching the extra material in this and I can truly say that there is no better inside, intimate look at Star Trek TOS. The only way you could get a better look at it would be to use the lightspeed breakaway factor and go back there to the beginning. The Roddenberry Vault is the time capsule. The time machine. The best and most wonderfully researched and altogether look at what went into that revolutionary series. You’ll see better than ever how this simple, short-lived series laid the groundwork for fifty years of adventure and storytelling. And you’ll also see how it can live forever. Thanks again to Michael Okuda, Rod Roddenberry and everyone else who made this love letter to the series and its fans possible.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersFor fans of Star Trek, this set is a must have for many reasons. The unaired scenes/alternate takes are well worth the price in my opinion. The deleted scenes from “The City on the Edge of Forever”, “Operation Annihilate” and “Space Seed” are outstanding and the omitted dialogue from episodes like “The Conscience of the King” and “Who Mourns for Adonis” are things hardcore fans have speculated about for years based on the original scripts and Blish novelizations. It is a true pleasure to actually see that they were filmed and I greatly enjoyed watching each and every minute.

I have to disagree with the reviewers who have found fault with the material presented. The complaint that they should be presented in a higher quality is rather picayune considering that the scenes were in film canisters for almost 50 years and were never aired. We can’t expect them to be in a digital, high quality print. However, if you are mainly interested in the content, I don’t think you’ll mind.

If you’re truly a fan of the franchise, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy today.

I enjoyed it for what it is, not getting caught up in the make believe world of what it could have been….old clips of bloopers and cut scenes that were meant to be thrown away 50 years ago surrounded with interviews from people who help shape Star Trek. Fun stuff and interesting if your are a fan of the show, especially those old enough to remember the old 8mm bootlegged blooper reels 🙂

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersAs a huge Star Trek fan, there was no way I wasn’t going to purchase this new release. The new clips and deleted scenes are great, as are the “special features” (although they are padded with a lot of talk from fans (as opposed to the great remarks by William Shatner). My only disappointment here is I was expecting a lot more of the found footage. Maybe there isn’t any more, but this is feeling a bit like a way to get folks to shell out more $$ to buy the same episodes we already own.

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersStar Trek Nirvana! To see scenes filmed and never included in the series original NBC broadcasts was jaw-dropping Trek Goodness!
Clarifies some episodes better with the deleted scenes revealed. My only caveat is they could not find it in their heart to include the original bloopers and NBC promos of the 1966-69 seasons. Do not know what the holdup is on that front.
Truly the icing on the cake was the FX work on the 11 foot Enterprise, filmed with a finer grain and slower film, which preserved the color and detail for FX work. Truly awesome to see effects filmed of her, but never used in the series production run.
True snapshot of the amalgamated talent which brought Star Trek to its place in TV history. Gene Roddenberry’s vision and guidance, Gene Coon and other’s hand in crafting our Trekdom for 50 years! I could not be anymore proud to of loved her since 1966.

Golden Review Award: 23 From Our UsersIf you’re a fan of the original series, this is simply a must have. Some may complain that this is little more than a repackaging of episodes, but all the extra features make it WELL worth it. From full scenes to brief clips, it’s a rare glimpse into what it was like to be on set of those classic episodes. And the inclusion of the most relevant episodes makes for handy comparisons. I’m telling you, the brief clip of Nichelle Nichols singing Cole Porter’s “Let’s Do It”, with her own, off the cuff lyrics about falling for Mr. Spock, and her gleeful expression, is an absolute riot. One of many amazing moments that could have easily been lost to time. The work that went into this, going through hundreds of film cans, just to find these unseen bits, not to mention the army of interviewees, was a labor of love. Don’t be put off by the mediocre quality of some of the clips themselves. They are from dailies, the workprints used by the studio, to decide what shots would be in the finished episodes. Most studios throw out this material, so the fact that they exist at all is a miracle. And they are more than watchable. If you’re a fan, and you know who you are, you will love it!

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersThis set is strewn with gems. Yes, there are episodes, the choice of which I think demonstrates the care for the subject shown by the producers of this set. “Metamorphosis” is often overlooked, yet here it is given its proper reverence.

The trims and deleted scenes, along with the unused (and un-composited) miniature shots are worth the price of the set on their own. The deleted scene from “City on the Edge of Forever” is priceless.

Yep, the addition of the episodes might be considered “padding,” but if this is the only Bluray you get, the context of the conversation and scenes/trims are provided. To me that simply had to be done, and it is nice to be able to see the features and then have the episodes right at hand.

Well done. A great addition of Star Trek nuggets I thought I’d never see. It’s like ordering some trims from Lincoln Enterprises (for those of us who did and couldn’t wait to see what we got) and finding the package contained whole reels of film.
