Bought this to sample everyday objects into my music and record instruments on the go. Since this comes with a pair of small-diaphragm condenser microphones, it’s very receptive to soft sounds. The signal-to-noise ratio is great as well. When plugged in with USB, it utilizes bus power, that’s a big plus when using this as an audio interface. This costs almost 40% more when bought in India but well, it is what it is…

    Would definitely recommend it!

My previous TASCAM died, maybe 15 years old, and I bought this as a replacement. It was a little confusing at first, but is not so bad now that I’m used to it. I’ve used it almost exclusively for transferring audio from vinyl records to computer and flash drive.

Recording sound quality is amazing. Playback is not so great as the speaker on the device is perhaps too small to be any good. I ended up using my headphones just to hear what I recorded. Battery life is not great either. I was hoping for more but after only three hours of recording the batteries need replaced. I don’t turn it on until I need to use it so I believe the batteries should have lasted much longer.

I have had this for about two months and have never needed to change the pair of included AA batteries. The sound from it is good, but there’s more to it than that.
    Features:
-You can use it as a microSD card reader when connected via microUSB
-You can use it as a desktop microphone when connected via microUSB
-It has quick settings to do, such as adjust input sensitivity and automatic peak reduction
-You can plug a mic into it
-You can listen to the audio live via wired headphones
    …AND MORE!

I am dabbling in making music through collected sounds and after having put off getting one of these for years…. I must admit that it’s the best purchase i’ve made in a long time. reliable, easy to use, and i have honestly been shocked at how useful it is even for regular daily use in regard to note-taking, keeping records of my jack*ss landlords illegally harrassing us, dictation for writing projects, etc etc. 11/10 highly recommend. just be careful about background noise — this lil guy picks up everything! i love i

This little mic does it all. The sound quality is excellent and does what I need it to do. The USB connectivity was simple (Windows 10) and there wasn’t any issues running the mic through Audacity or Wavepad to record vocal audio. The mics are sensitive enough that they will pick up subtle ambient sounds such as distant thunder or distant birds chirping. I like the fact it has a built in tripod mount so I can setup in the field to record nature sounds. Overall I am really happy with this device and so are my listeners.

This works great but there is one little glitch. I have NO idea where to attach the AC converter? The sound is good and as long as you keep the manual handy you can navigate the steps to record and edit with this fairly priced unit easily. I am heading off to read the manual now ( a few things are new from the older model and a mite confusing) but generally I would HIGHLY recommend buying this recorder. It’s very efficient and utilitarian. .AS I said keep they manual handy!!!

When I first bought this, I was so excited to finally have my hands on a binaural microphone. The microphones are really sensitive and pick up a lot of sound. Unfortunately, they also pick up a lot of white noise, so recording lower sounds like for ASMR requires a lot more cleanup. I really do like this, and I’d recommend it for interviews and other sounds that can be picked up at normal volume. However, I liked the ease of use so much that I’m going to get the Tascam DR-40X instead and some XLR mics.

You’ll need to buy a micro SD card, because this doesn’t come with one. I used USB bus power for most of my recordings and in the week and a half that I used it, the alkaline batteries didn’t visibly drain. This item is really lightweight, so I’d recommend a wrist strap if you’re going to be moving around a lot.

I’ve just been setting the Tascam DR-05X at the back of the room and recording our jam sessions. Works and sounds great. You can also tap a button to instantly start a new recording so I do this when we start a new song so I have a bunch of smaller files and don’t have to scroll though a full hour and a half to find the song I want. Then I just transfer them via USB to my computer. I’m digging it.

I would have liked a more in-depth instruction manual. This item is probably a favorite with the young folks, who seem to just pick up a new device and innately know how it works. Bless them all! But, unfortunately, I am in my 70s and do not possess this talent. Therefore, I cannot give an accurate rating at this time. Give me a few months and I am sure I will figure it out.

I have been looking for devices that I can carry and use for podcasting. I used other devices for a few months but their audio is not as good quality. So I stopped doing using them and used my phone, a generic mic with a ‘dead cat’ muffler and record. It feels “okayish” but I have to edit the audio to another software for clarity. Until I stumbled a referred product thru a friend, who is using Zoom, which is too much to pay because I am not a big production podcaster or hired to do for some business or profit. I do podcasting for personal use.

Enter TASCAM DR-05X. I used this today because it arrived today. Attached to my phone with a RODE boom mic with a ‘dead cat’ muffler and VOILA! I don’t need an audio editor. Background noise is virtually silenced, the bass and treble are balanced. The P’s and S’s sounds were a hassle before I used TASCAM. A motorbike passed thru while I was walking and barely a problem. I was loud before, now, there is a big difference.

I went to YT for in-depth instructions on how to operate the device and hundreds of them purchased the older version and this new version. Brian Miller’s [Audio for Content Creators] instructions on how to use and manage the 05X device stands out from the rest. I am going to have fun using this moving forward. If you want to purchase a device that is cheap, as of this month because Amazon is selling for a discount, I recommend getting it before the price goes up. Podcasting will continue…

    Thanks.

I received the DR-05X and once I put in a memory card and the included batteries, it was pretty easy to handle right away because the menus make sense. If you know that “.wav” is Wave file and “”db” is decibels and that sort of thing, it will make sense to you. Its packed with great features even though my expectation was just for a voice recorder. I bought one a few months back from another company and it just didn’t work one day, losing all of my files. So I’m fine with the DR-05 not having internal memory. I get to control my files whether or not the unit works. And I get it, they’re in the business of sound not memory. Anyway, great little unit. Perfect size… Perfect features… perfect.

The Tascam DR-50x is a decent little recorder, but you can get buried in all the little adjustments and tweaks it offers. So, it records great, it’s small and a decent price. After you record your song idea; lecture; whatever… You push ‘play’ and turn the volume up, and up, and up and you still can’t hear your recording and the volume is at max. Huh? I think the other side of a quality recording is being able to actually hear it! I ended up buying the Logitech Z50 speaker and now I can say for certain that the recordings on the DR-50 are really clear and crisp!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI just love how simple it is to use this recorder and the amount of options you have for recording -format, lenght, levels, inputs and outputs, etc-
Two batteries will last for about 17 hours if you keep recording continuously, just make sure you have a couple of extra batteries in your bag… Just in case.
The microphone is really sensitive and will capture even the slightest sound, however if you don’t like that or if your needs are different, you can plug an external microphone (lavalier, wireless receiver, etc) and you can plug the recorder to a camera through its output port on the side, thus taking advantage of the recorders preamps. This way you will have the audio saved in both your camera and the recorder at the same time. It’s best to have this audio backup in case your camera fails for some reason, specially when shooting an interview. Just remember to press record and stop, otherwise you’ll end up with reaaaaaally long and heavy files.

The screen is bright enough to let you see it even if you’re out in really bright conditions.

I haven’t found any negatives, however if I do, I will update this review =)

Incredible sound quality and lots of options...

I was contemplating returning this because I was struggling with how to connect this with my Macbook. The firmware was all PC based and it just flat out wasn’t working. The manual is not sufficient for a product that is not super intuitive (once you play with it, it is easy).

Save some grief that I went through. 1) Make sure the USB cable you use (ah yes also, what the heck, they can’t include a USB cable?) is not only set aside for charging. What’s the difference? I think the charging only USB cable have white in the inside. The data transfer ones do not. Anyway if you use the correct one it will go right to your computer. 2) Get a micro SD card while this is on order. Take not MICRO not a regular sd card. This device comes with batteries and that’s it. 3) You can use this as an external recording mic for your computer (the sound quality is outstanding)! Make sure the device is turned off. Plug the USB connectors from the device to your computer. Then power on. From there it will give you three options. Select the last one. (I/O) You should be ready to go after that! Happy recording whatever you do. I use mine for music and it picks up instruments very well!

I am still discovering new uses for it. Of course it does all that it was advertised to do. But when the wife wanted to practice a piece of music that was on Youtube, I played it into the Tascam and then burned it onto a CD. She had her practice music to learn in about 10 minutes. We did not like a hum and buzz in the audio at church so we ran the recording out line through the Tascam, recorded the audio too, and at the same time cleaned it up to sent it out on the stream line and IT WORKED. Now that we were surprised to see. And I still have more stuff on it I need to learn to use. LOVE IT.

This is an excellent device for people needing to record audio using its onboard mics or by bringing in audio through a 3.5 mm audio input (like a lavalier mic). I guess for students, musicians, reporters, etc. it would be useful. It is kind of limited to the input source of only 3.5 mm inputs. If this had both XLR and 3.5 mm inputs, it would be that much more useful as a tool for in-field use. I returned mine and bought a TASCAM DR-60DMKII, which has what I was looking for.

  56. Anonymous says:

I had an earlier model but unfortunately the batteries leaked and it will only run off a wall wart – not what you want for a handheld recorder. So I got this. It is similar to my old one, but there are some differences. It uses the mini form of memory card. The built in microphones are angled and the interface is a bit different. It looks like there are a lot of features that I haven’t yet figured out, but look like they will be useful. A useful addition is that there is now a built in speaker, so you can check your recording without having to plug in earphones. However, the sound quality is not all that great with the speaker, so mostly it’s useful to make sure you’ve got what you wanted. With earphones, the sound quality is pretty good, depending on how good your earphones are.

This is a good recorder for recording yourself playing your instrument and then listening to see how good you did and where you might need improving. It also is good your recording ideas you might have, like perhaps a riff or phrase you might want to remember and use in the future.

The user interface is easy enough to understand, and any issues I couldn’t work through on my own were easily solved by the manual that came with it. The sound quality isn’t perfect, but for $80, it’s definitely worth it.

I’d recommend getting a microSD card for it, as attaching it to your computer via a USB cord is kind of a pain in the butt, and the cards are insanely cheap and can store more audio than you’ll ever need.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat for recording my band live and practice . 4 piece band with full drums. If you’re wondering if you can record in a tight space and you’re playing loud, this is the shiznit. Has manual recording input level. When you hit record it goes into a standby mode where you can adjust the input level before you hit record again to actually record. Input the level to 3 (from 1-100) very low level. You can put it directly in the middle. Though I did space it a bit away from the drums than the rest of the instruments because every recording device gets more cymbals than anything if it’s too close. 2 guitars bass and drums came through great. I dig it. I’ve used 3 times in 3 hour sessions and the batteries haven’t died. If you turn the input up to the highest you could record a bird chirping 200 feet away. Good for sampling sounds. All around good. Check out Lyle Fuller Band live at the merrimaker recordings on YouTube for the actual sound of it. Not trying to pump my band just honestly trying to help anyone who has a band get a good idea of the live sound in a bar gig.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersSolid like all Tascam products (I also own a DP-008EX).
    – Real time clock date stamps the files. A sequence number is also added.
    – Overdubbing is done by creating a new file, thus preserving the initial take.
    – Compact with excellent battery life.

The user interface is a bit cumbersome but given the screen size and number of buttons available they did the best they could. It just take some getting used to.

What I’d like to see –
Tascam provides a function to reverse the screen in tuner mode (when the recorder is faced toward you). It seems this would also be useful when recording from the mics. I’d also like the ability to swap the left and right mics in this mode. The manual indicates this capability but I don’t see that option on my device. Perhaps it is in another product? It seems like a feature that could be provided with a firmware upgrade.

This unit is great for recording DJ mixes. Small, light and easy to use. If your output is too hot, you might need an attenuating cable though.

La calidad de grabacin es buena y su uso es intuitivo y sencillo. Los materiales utilizados en el cuerpo del equipo no son de la mejor calidad, al igual que los terminados. Solo por eso no le doy las 5 estrellas.

This is an easy to device. I was able to setup without having to refer to the user manual. The only issue I have is that the playback sound level is too low. However, the overall sound quality is good.

I used 24-bit WAV file format for recording, and there were random dropouts in the recordings. It was consistent – always at least once, and often enough to be an annoyance, but very random as to when. Otherwise, they were very handy. Used 5 of them to record multiple venues. Left them on for 4 hours at a time to get speaker after speaker. Other than the random dropouts, I was very pleased.

The Tascam DR-05X is a great little recorder! I use it to record live music and it does so extremely well. Once you get to know the operations of the buttons, it’s quick and easy. I find the best way to transfer data to my computer is with the micro SD adaptor. With a 64 gig drive you can record for over 24 hours and still have time left over. I highly recommend!

Golden Review Award: 44 From Our Users…it’s bulky, you get radio interference if you recorder next to router, phones etc, and you’ll need the manual.
Other than that, this is a great recorder. Has more features than the H1n; if you don’t mind how big it is, it’s better than H1n. You’ll need a microSD card (standard with premium recorders), and it supports larger microSDXC cards, a rarity among digital records.
I had no issues connecting it to my computer (Windows 10). Good transfer speeds, you can also use it as a USB mic, or use your computer to power the DR-05x. Uses AA batteries, and you get about 17 hours or recording. But I prefer to power it using a USB power bank.
I took 1 star off because of the interference issue (the older version has the same issue). I like it more than the older version (they’ve improved the screen and added microSDXC support), and you’ll get awesome audio quality when you use this recorder.
A lot of reviewers have issues with low volume audio – read manual and figure out how to increase the microphone sensitivity. And the external mic input is a TRS, so won’t work with TRRS lav mic (if it works on your phone, it won’t work on this recorder without an TRRS to TRS adapter).

Great recorder for recording music and easy to use. The only difficulty, which I haven’t resolved yet for sure, is that I couldn’t find a cable to go from its usb port to my Macbook Pro Laptop. Even the Tascam web site under “specifications” only says “Micro B,” just like its very sparse manual that came with the device. However, there are different kinds of Micro B cables I’ve found out after ordering a few that didn’t fit. I’ll have to see if my new try at a Micro B cable works this time. Other than the cable annoyance, the device works well.

Golden Review Award: 33 From Our UsersYou can’t go wrong with the Tascam DR-05X. It comes with a manual that men can use once they discover they can’t figure out all the features without it.

Golden Review Award: 24 From Our UsersIt is really good recorder. Simple menu, a lot of useful functions and great recording quality. I like new USB functions, specifically audio hub. Just connect this to my macbook and record sound directly to VideoPad software. Build quality is also good. So far I have no issues at all. Everything functions as it should be. Will see how it will work going forward.

Golden Review Award: 43 From Our UsersI was doing research on the “old” DR-05 when I came across the new “X” version. So far, I am loving this recorder! Super easy to use and sounds great. One of the new features is the ability to record directly to a computer by using the DR-05X as an interface. I had never really considered using a hand-held as a USB interface, but I hooked it up to my computer (Windows 10), and it didn’t even need drivers installed. It just worked. I have a free version of Audacity, and I simply selected the Tascam unit in the drop-down for microphone input. Works great! I also messed around with the “overdub” feature (allows you to stack sounds one take at a time). It’s a very cool feature, but for true multi-tracking I think I would just hook it up to my computer and use Audacity to do the extra tracks. Keep in mind that you’ll need an SD card (micro) as it does not come with one

Golden Review Award: 78 From Our UsersGreat product. I have used Tascam products in the past, but wanted a hand-held recorder for use with my musical projects and for some simple songwriting. I am super pleased with the sound quality of this recorder and it’s ease of use. It easily handled my garage band playing at full volume, and I also really enjoy the “Overdub” feature (allows you to put down a quick idea and then layer parts over top of the original). You can basically do a full fledged “multi-track” demo right on the unit. Very cool! Some things I found a bit weirdYou definitely have to look at the manual to figure out how to get it into the overdub mode (I downloaded the manual from the website, so I could search it electronically), but once you have it in that mode, it’s super easy to layer tracks. I also found it odd that they did not include a USB cable since the unit can be used as a USB interface, but I had an old cable from a cell phone laying around and it worked fine. The pic is me using this with Audacity software (free download). All in all, very pleased with this recorder for what I am using it for.

Golden Review Award: 33 From Our UsersI purchased the DR-05X because of their legacy name over the others and I wasn’t disappointed. I’ve tested it by recording my acoustic guitar and vocals as an audio interface, as well as recording the ocean for location recording. The quality I heard coming from my HS-N8’s were fantastic! I highly suggest this product.
