Hobbits dwarfs
Only watched the first one so far great picture and sound. Shame about the bars you need to see this full screen. Also need to see this on an ole d with Dolby atmos sound ??!! Love this film well worth getting.
With “The Lord of the rings” 4K UHD set, there are 2 discs for each “extended version” giving a feeling that the hefty cost was good value. Hobbit Trilogy crams the extended version on one disc, the other being the “Theatrical version”.
Visually as stunning but on both sets of movies, the menu fails to display the Audio settings for Dolby Atmos, HD etc. on my Samsung UHD player. The only way to find them or any access was to search in the machine’s menu.
Not sure why but very annoying and if you need subtitles for the impaired etc, even harder.
With all this said, the Picture is stunning and a vast improvement on the blu-rays.
Colour and clarity makes them a joy to watch, just consider if it’s worth the shame price as LOTR set…..
The Hobbit trilogy presented in the 4k format, again, as was the case with the Lord of The Rings trilogy – ‘A JOY TO BEHOLD’ the upgrade, frankly -stunning.
Of course, Tolkien’s Hobbit tale was just the one book whereas the LOR was indeed the three books, so it’s fair to say the Hobbit tale has been stretched some.
The Hobbit story a little more light-hearted at times than the dark LOR one.
The story begins with the telling of how the once rich and powerful Dwarfs are driven out from their home in Lonely Mountain by the dragon Smaug.
The story previously untold is from the writings and reflections of Bilbo Baggins who now approaching his 111th birthday writes the story for his young cousin Frodo.
Sixty years ago the young Bilbo (Martin Freeman) a lover of his home comforts is visited by Gandalf ( Ian McKellen) who has secretly invited a gathering of unruly Dwarfs to meet and indeed enjoy Bilbo’s reluctant hospitality, eventually, the group are joined by the apparent heir to the throne of Lonely Mountain Thorin (Richard Armitage) who hopes to reclaim their homeland.
Gandalf challenges Bilbo to join the quest, well, Bilbo is not a warrior and doubts he would fit in, however, he does decide to join Gandalf and the Dwarfs on the quest….the beginning of Bilbo’s unexpected journey.
The group will encounter many varied and often strange persons on the journey which in some instances bring them danger, all the time however they are pursued by the Orcs who are determined to rid the lands of the Dwarfs especially targeting Thorin.
Along the way they are guided to Rivendell by Gandalf to shelter for a time, however, there is little trust or love lost between the Elven community and the Dwarfs
However, Gandalf catches-up with old friends Elrond (Hugo Weaving) Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), and indeed The White Wizard Saruman (Christopher Lee)
The Elves not impressed by the Dwarfs do however invite Bilbo to return someday, which to finish his book he one day in the future will do.
The story goes on to tell of how Bilbo comes to find the Ring of Power in the depths of the cave complex occupied by the Goblin King and his hoards.
Escaping the cave and the wretched creature Gollum is when Bilbo discovers he can make himself invisible by wearing the ring.
Doubt of Bilbo’s purpose or usefulness on the quest is repeatedly questioned by Thorin, however, during a skirmish with the Orcs, the Hobbit saves the heir from certain death an act of bravery from the Hobbit that changes Thorin’s opinion of Bilbo.
On with the quest, the group take shelter in the home of skin-changer Beorn who as is the case with many dislikes Dwarfs but, fortunately for the group likes Orcs even less
They are guided the next day en-route to Lonely Mountain to a forest, Gandalf has to leave the group for a while and warns them to stick to the path which the Dwarfs fail to do, attacked by giant spiders Bilbo’s find the Ring of Power comes in handy as does the intervention of Wood Elves Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly ) and Legolas (Orlando Bloom)
The group are taken to the Wood Elves home, however, like others, the Elves do not like Dwarfs, the group are imprisoned, luckily Bilbo escapes capture and again using the Ring free’s the Dwarfs.
The group escape in barrels down the river but are pursued by the Orcs, luck is on their side Tauriel and Legolas help the Dwarfs escape by attacking the pursuing Orcs.
Lonely Mountain is now in sight, however, how do they cross the great lake?
Lake Town resident, family man, and bargeman/fisherman Bard ( Luke Evans) offers his help when Thorin pledges some of the Dwarfs riches to Bard and the master of Lake Town (Stephen Fry) if they can reclaim the mountain.
At Lonely Mountain Bilbo discovers the hidden entrance and volunteers to go forth to the great hall in search of the treasured Arkenstone lost during Smaug’s attack years before…..trouble is the Dragon voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch guards the mountains of treasure and indeed the Arkenstone.
The ring will again come in handy for Bilbo, eventually, with the help of the Dwarfs Skaug is outmaneuvered and fly’s off threatening to destroy Lake Town.
Meanwhile unbeknown to the triumphant Dwarfs but discovered by Gandalf the Orcs have amassed a large army and are heading toward Lonely Mountain.
However, Gandalf becomes imprisoned by the Orcs held in a steel cage and unable to warn the Dwarfs of what was to come.
Meanwhile, Laketown is being set ablaze by the Dragon Smaug, Bard who had been imprisoned by the Master of the town knows only he with his skills with a bow can stop the destruction and slaughter.
At Lonely Mountain, Thorin now King becomes a victim of the riches around him and loses his sense of fairness and honour.
Meanwhile, Galadriel, Elrond, and Saruman arrive at Dol Gudar to free the now weakened Gandalf who, when recovering is desperate to warn his friends of the armies heading their way.
At Lonely Mountain King Thorin refuses to aid the Laketown refuges denying them what he’d earlier promised as will he with Woodland Elf leader/Thranduil (Lee Pace) who only wants what is rightfully theirs back he has 0his forces with him to make sure he gets the Elven treasure back///
Thranduil has banished Tauriel who has claimed to be in love with the Dwarf Kli (Alan Turner)
as a result of which Legolas will not side with his father and tells him he’ll help Tauriel.
After further negotiations when even Bilbo pleads with Thorin to do what’s0 right fails the Elven Army lines up to attack the Dwarfs aided by the men of the Dales now led by Bard.
Thorin won’t surrender knowing a large army of Dwarfs are nearby to aid their King the battle begins, however, the arrival of the Orc army changes everything, the Dwarfs, Elves, and Men all of whom are under threat will join together to thwart the attack.
What the three armies are not aware of and has become known to Legolas and Tauriel is that a fifth army is on its way ‘The Orcs of Gundabad’
A long a costly battle has been raging during which King Thorin has come to his senses and with his Dwarfs joins in the fray.
Not all our heroes of the trilogy will survive, Bilbo’s adventure nearly at an end, soon time to return to the Shire.
A superb visual treat that is cram-/packed with stunning special effects./CGI.
Though overall not the equal of the LOR trilogy, not undermining the amazing long battle sequence in the third film, the Hobbit trilogy especially with the 4K upgrade is a great investment. (The two sets LORD OF THE RINGS and THE HOBBIT both in 4K complimenting each other as a collection)
Looks and sounds incredible. You will not be disappointed. My player is running HDR10- I understand that they also run Dolby Vision where compatible. And people saying to wait for 2021 – the official announcement is for an anniversary ultimate edition cgi remaster of the Blu-ray, the UHD discs will be the same.

Story line still amazing after all these years first introduced to Tolkien as a young school boy still holds my interest now at the age of 62 brilliant story and film
Value DVD series
Great story made into very dramatic films with superb graphics. For me just a bit too long. Having the DVDs has the big advantage of no adverts, because these films are on TV from time to time. Acting generally pretty good..
Just what we wanted
Bought as a gift. Already seen many times and will continue to be watched many more times. This was bought to replace an older one which left our house with our Son when he moved out. Fantastic action packed and beautiful story. If you haven’t seen it I would recommend you buy it.
A very good set of films to go with your Lord of the Rings. Very good to the book, if over done in the sense of three films compared to the book that was shorter. If you know the story of our heros, then it will be clear but if you don’t, we have a lot of jumping around with the Bilbo Baggins, who with the Dwarfs, set about reclaiming the Dwarf Kingdoms against the The Orcs who are coming into power. Good battle scenes, acting and scrips. If you have been to New Zealand, you will recognise the places being shot on film. After watching this set, you may want to watch Lord of the Rings again.
Brilliantly done for the big screen!
Brilliant films. Usually when a book is transferred to the big screen so much is lost, but these retain the wonder, comedy, adventure and thrill that first hooked me in when reading the book at 10 years old.
Good but case was broke
It come in good time and is exactly what I wanted. However, one of the cases were broken on the inside. I bought for a birthday present so I didn’t have time to send back. It’s a shame because that is the only fault.

Who doesn’t love the hobbit?! This is a great set, that doesn’t take up too much room on the shelf despite the huge amount of content within. The quality is as you would expect and with everyone owning a smart device/tablet these days the free digital copies are marvellous (especially if planning any long journeys!)

Fantastic Trilogy – what more can you say about a classic.
I used to think The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings were massively dweeby films for nerds, then I heard the soundtracks, really liked them and decided to watch the films and I LOVE THEM!! If that makes me a nerd I don’t care, but I still won’t watch Star Trek.
if you are a fan of the previews saga of TLOTR you should definly get this one, especially because is in HD so you can enjoy the amazing special effects
Exhilaratingly the three films depict how peace-loving, stay-at-home hobbit Bilbo Baggins evolves into an action hero – he instrumental in helping dispossessed dwarves reclaim their kingdom. Dangers confront at every stage of the journey, even wizard Gandalf at times close to death.
Set sixty years before “The Lord of the Rings”, the key moment here is where Bilbo discovers the ring destined in due course to change everything for everyone. (Gifted by hindsight, we recognize this – despite it occurring in the midst of so much else going on.)
Visually the trilogy is a treat, New Zealand the star – its wide range of magnificent scenery saving the makers a fortune in computerised special effects. (Each disc has a brief bonus where cast enthuse about the splendours seen, some beyond belief.) Also greatly enhancing is Howard Shore’s music – especially that haunting Shire theme – constant reminder of where hobbits are happiest.
As Bilbo, Martin Freeman is perfect – suggesting so well vulnerability when so far from his comfort zone, amazement on discovering unsuspected courage. He represents the heart of this unfolding saga – at all times unshakeably loyal, ever determined to do what is right. He heads a strong cast, many heavily disguised behind much facial hair. Some are a surprise. (Voicing the ferocious dragon is none other than Freeman’s “Sherlock” co-star Benedict Cumberbatch.)
All will have their favourite characters and moments. (Mine is Gollum, particularly in the riddle sequence.)
Although viewers at home miss out on the cinema’s big screen action, which must be overwhelmingly spectacular, it is an advantage to see the three films in quick succession – all the better to appreciate the overall theme.
Despite so much that impresses, certain commonly voiced criticisms are justified. Three films seem a lot for a shortish book, there ample evidence of dragging things out: the start rather slow; new storylines introduced (especially in film two); sessions with spiders, the dragon and scenes of mass destruction perhaps going on longer than they need.
Nevertheless five stars are deserved. The past two evenings have contained well over seven hours of real enjoyment – so much to enthral, to excite, and genuinely to move.

Very enjoyable trilogy – I was sceptical having the original BBC play version of the Hobbit how it could be a 6 hour film – but a lot of interesting original detail was brought in as well as some of the original songs. DVDs are good quality with some interesting special features.

Great – I preferred it more to the Lord of the Rings due to the minimal appearance of Gollum – he can be grating. Having the voice of Dame Edna appearing was a great surprise.

A bit long but good. The quality is superb and is a great way to show off what a TV can do. The film itself, is good and probably better than lord of the rings.
Great films but a bit drawn out.
Very good three part film except it seems a bit drawn out. Eight hours for a 300 or so page book is a bit much. Very good in places and the effects are by and large top notch. Extras are a very large blog on disc 1, a more general two hours worth on disc 2 and only about an hour of extras on disc 3. The are all respectable though.

I’m a big fan of the Lord of the Rings so wasn’t surprised that I loved this trilogy. I’m glad that some familiar characters such as Legolas and Gandulf are in it but I love the new characters aswell.

A bit drawn out but ideally matches ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Have already watched the entire 3 disks twice – a whole days at a time! Have actually visited the studios in Wellington when I was touring NZ in 2013 and, wearing my broad-brimmed hat, was taken by some young Japanese tourists as one of the exhibits! I dod not charge them for the pics which they took of me posing – Gandalf-like!

Good introduction to The Lord of the Rings
Nearly got five stars. Thoroughly enjoyable, but it’s not The Lord of the Rings, and I’m not sure that the story can sustain being turned it into a trilogy. Other than that great – acting, CGI, scenery all excellent. If you want the background to LotR then this is good – or read the book.

As a LOTR and Hobbit fan, this was a must buy even though I have watched it frequently on long distance flights when it was shown. Still the 3rd disk to watch though as time ran out. Up there beside the classics such as Ben Hur and 10 Commandments.

A great adventure trilogy
Loved these films, pure fantasy. Great to watch on a dreary day, any day really, well made and great effects.

Good - if a little stretched.
Expectations were high when the first movie was released in the cinemas and I would say I was initially disappointed with it, so I didn’t go to see the other two at the time. Think I enjoyed watching the whole set on DVD more, except maybe for the last one in which the 5 army battle scene gets more & more ridiculous and dragged out.
I think the 2nd movie is the best of the trilogy and that the whole thing should have been 2 movies, rather than 3.
The only extras on each DVD are 1 or 2 trailers and a 6-7 min movie about the locations in New Zealand, which is fair enough for the price.
Exciting films that grow on you
Watched all of these a few times now. Much more impressed than when I saw them at the flics. Lots of details are in there that I missed on first viewing, and you can appreciate the acting and costumes better. Definitely growers. Also happy with the interpretation of the book, it was more open to a little artistic license than the LoR books were. Obviously there are some excruciating moments too, but they are few. The audio and video are both fine on this minimal box set, which is also nicely presented, and represents good value for money.
Middle Earth here we come
The best way to view the Hobbit is to get the trilogy. After viewing the Lord of The Rings it seems a natural progression to get this. Excellent storyline and special effects make it a “must see” Highly recommended

great Dolby digital 5.1 audio and stunning visuals make peter Jacksons prequel trilogy to l.o.t.r’s a great trilogy for any previous fans.
I personally consider the 1st movie the best for many a reason however the other’s like t desolation of smaug and the battle of five armys are still quality pieces of recent cinema delving into j.r.r tolkeins realm of middle earth worthy to see.

Didn’t enjoy the films when they we’re released too much because of comparing them to the book. However, viewed the discs as just entertaining films in their own right. Take them on that basis and enjoy.

Peter Jackson has done an amazing job with The Hobbit. He has intelligently linked The Hobbit with LOTR, the casting is superb, the pace is spot on. The one flaw I can pick out is Sting not glowing when there are two armies of orcs right next to Bilbo (lol!). But apart from that, this is perfect.

if you are looking for the standard version of this trilogy on dvd with a few little extras, i strongly recommend buying this product. definitely wouldnt say the picture was bad quality, very enjoyable. all i wanted was my favourite film trilogy on dvd and thats exactly what i got 🙂
An unforgettable Adventure
Amazing story-line with so many twists on the original book and rather more grown-up, but not a dull moment in any of these films.
Smaug is unforgettable, only I would have preferred him red-gold rather than grey, but still fantastic to see.
A definite must for Tolkein fans, and good value for 3 full length films.

If you liked Lord of the Rings then you will love this. This Trilogy is better than Lord of the Rings. Stunning scenery, brilliant acting and the story brilliant. You watch one and want to watch the others straight after. Great for Adults that are young at heart and like films with action and humour.

On Tauriel's love for Killi the Dwarf
Another enjoyable visit to Middle Earth from Peter Jackson. Having read the book, I wondered how it could be stretched to three films, but, of course, Jackson introduced additional characters, notably Legolas and Tauriel. Some people seem upset by Tauriel’s love for Killi the Dwarf, but I don’t see why. At least it proved all Elves are not cold, controlled creatures, rather like the Vulcans in Star Trek.I liked Tauriel, superbly and sympathetically played by Evangeline Lilly. Because of the later LOTR trilogy, she could not marry Legolas – shame. There was lots of action, as you would expect.A fine set of excellent films, but I think Peter Jackson might well consider he has done all he can – another film might be risky. But I would like to know how Tauriel ended up.

OK it’s a great movie and the HD is fantastic but I just read the book with my 9 year old and the movie is far removed from Tolkien’s book. The cynic in me thinks that this relatively modest book was padded out to make a trilogy. Tauriel is added for reasons best known to director Peter Jackson (surely not to get girls to watch the movie?) as well as a number of other unnecessary additions.

I’m a big fan. Not as epic as Lord of the rings but enjoyable never the less and joins up well as a prequel to the original blockbusters. More of the same with son epic battles against the orcs and other foes. Soundtrack and scenery equally as spell binding. A great adult children’s story.

Bought as a gift (and not yet handed over) so I cannot comment on the recording quality.
However the DVD’s arrived in good time, just as described, and very satisfactory.

We had to wait a very long time for the Hobbit film to complete the Tolkien cycle but in the end it was worth the wait. Peter Jackson has done a superb job once again. It is disappointing that the DVD version has almost no special features unlike the Blu-ray version which is available in an extended edition with several extra features. Another case of big businesses forcing people into technology they might not wish to get.
Highly recommended!

I’m a total Hobbit addict and loved all three movies although I had seen them before. Liked the presentation too as I’ve been to Hobbiton in New Zealand and the box cover reminds me of that visit.
