The Hobbit trilogy was shot digitally at 5k resolution, which leads to a pristine picture on 4k blu-ray. As with LOTR, there’s Dolby Vision, and a very high bit-rate. It’s a pity there’s no high frame rate version included, but unfortunately 4k blu-ray players don’t support 48fps, only 50 or 60 in HFR mode. It would be the same as PAL DVDs, which ran at 25fps so were actually sped up slightly compared to cinema and US releases (and blu-ray, which of course runs at 24fps), but maybe there’s another reason. Either way, blame the studio, they’re the ones who get the final say in these matters.
Unfortunately this set contains no bonus material whatsoever, not even the audio commentaries, so to have the complete set you would need to get a copy of the Extended Blu-ray set too, which is all a bit silly really.

Haven’t tested the discs yet, but I reckon they will work. Great packaging. Happy little hobbit.
Just loved watching them. Met all expectations, thoroughly enjoyable film night.
Was a gift for my daughter for Christmas, She loves it, has watched them over and over again. Arrived on time in good condition.
Loved the films, came in a good condition with an additional code to watch it on your devices.
Razor sharp video quality, watching other films afterwards makes them seem blurry!
Top quality arrived before due date, got me out of trouble as it was for wife’s birthday.
Worked perfectly. enjoyed the movies colour was fantastic, packaging and time it took to come were also excellent. Also special features are very enjoyable
The films are just….. EXCELLENT love them soo much! No complaints there. Special features are that long and the box the DVDs come in is a bit flimsy. But the films themselves are insanly awesome!
Brilliant film, and will watch again & again over the years
Fantastic Trilogy – what more can you say about a classic.
Exhilaratingly the three films depict how peace-loving, stay-at-home hobbit Bilbo Baggins evolves into an action hero – he instrumental in helping dispossessed dwarves reclaim their kingdom. Dangers confront at every stage of the journey, even wizard Gandalf at times close to death.
Set sixty years before “The Lord of the Rings”, the key moment here is where Bilbo discovers the ring destined in due course to change everything for everyone. (Gifted by hindsight, we recognize this – despite it occurring in the midst of so much else going on.)
Visually the trilogy is a treat, New Zealand the star – its wide range of magnificent scenery saving the makers a fortune in computerised special effects. (Each disc has a brief bonus where cast enthuse about the splendours seen, some beyond belief.) Also greatly enhancing is Howard Shore’s music – especially that haunting Shire theme – constant reminder of where hobbits are happiest.
As Bilbo, Martin Freeman is perfect – suggesting so well vulnerability when so far from his comfort zone, amazement on discovering unsuspected courage. He represents the heart of this unfolding saga – at all times unshakeably loyal, ever determined to do what is right. He heads a strong cast, many heavily disguised behind much facial hair. Some are a surprise. (Voicing the ferocious dragon is none other than Freeman’s “Sherlock” co-star Benedict Cumberbatch.)
All will have their favourite characters and moments. (Mine is Gollum, particularly in the riddle sequence.)
Although viewers at home miss out on the cinema’s big screen action, which must be overwhelmingly spectacular, it is an advantage to see the three films in quick succession – all the better to appreciate the overall theme.
Despite so much that impresses, certain commonly voiced criticisms are justified. Three films seem a lot for a shortish book, there ample evidence of dragging things out: the start rather slow; new storylines introduced (especially in film two); sessions with spiders, the dragon and scenes of mass destruction perhaps going on longer than they need.
Nevertheless five stars are deserved. The past two evenings have contained well over seven hours of real enjoyment – so much to enthral, to excite, and genuinely to move.
No problems with delivery or qualty. Both in that it was the item ordered & Brand new as stated
Brilliant thank you .they came before the date which was great thank you .
Bought them for my mum x She loves them x
Classic! Great little box set as well. Recommend for all LOTR’s and Hobbit fans looking to upgrade from DVD.
Wonderful. Three engrossing films. Good price and very fast delivery
Simply a great box set to join my LOTR one. I love it!
Great – I preferred it more to the Lord of the Rings due to the minimal appearance of Gollum – he can be grating. Having the voice of Dame Edna appearing was a great surprise.
Brilliant adaptation of the classic Tolkien novel. This and Lord Of The Rings knock Harry Potter for six.
Ordered on Christmas Day as an after thought gift for my husband. Arrived on 27th December, as advised. He loves the Hobbit. Very pleased and satisfied customer.
Not to my taste, but my son says this is great.
Great blu-ray epic the hobbit trilogy delivered on time stated service very good as always thankyou
The only reason you’d really buy these are if you like the LOTR trilogy I guess? Which I do, which is why I bought them. Loving life
Very good three part film except it seems a bit drawn out. Eight hours for a 300 or so page book is a bit much. Very good in places and the effects are by and large top notch. Extras are a very large blog on disc 1, a more general two hours worth on disc 2 and only about an hour of extras on disc 3. The are all respectable though.
Product casing not as damaged as I thought. Dvd’s appear to be in excellent condition (haven’t played them yet). Good value
Does exactly what it says on the tin. Great product.
If you like movies, then buy this now! you will not regret i
watched it on 3 successive nights. felt like an actor in the film.
Great films in a great box set for a really good price, id recommend to everyone, plus looks great in my blu ray collectio
Have not seen my husband cos he is always upstairs watching this
Wonderful service and one of the best movie trilogies ever!!! In keeping with the LOTR movies, pure brilliance!!!
A bit drawn out but ideally matches ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Have already watched the entire 3 disks twice – a whole days at a time! Have actually visited the studios in Wellington when I was touring NZ in 2013 and, wearing my broad-brimmed hat, was taken by some young Japanese tourists as one of the exhibits! I dod not charge them for the pics which they took of me posing – Gandalf-like!
we have not watched them all yet but are not dissappointed
while it didnt seem quite as enthralling as the lord of the rings, this box set still provided hours of fabulous escapism. recommended.
What can I sauy that has not already been said, brilliant as good as LOTR wish there were more
Loved these films, pure fantasy. Great to watch on a dreary day, any day really, well made and great effects.
still think it’s clever hoe they get normal height actors to appear as short hobbits.
All in all a great trilogy of films, great value for money.
great Dolby digital 5.1 audio and stunning visuals make peter Jacksons prequel trilogy to l.o.t.r’s a great trilogy for any previous fans.
I personally consider the 1st movie the best for many a reason however the other’s like t desolation of smaug and the battle of five armys are still quality pieces of recent cinema delving into j.r.r tolkeins realm of middle earth worthy to see.
Peter Jackson has done an amazing job with The Hobbit. He has intelligently linked The Hobbit with LOTR, the casting is superb, the pace is spot on. The one flaw I can pick out is Sting not glowing when there are two armies of orcs right next to Bilbo (lol!). But apart from that, this is perfect.
Had not seen this on the big screen, but it was OK. Seems there was a lot of artistic licence going on though and a lot of scenes was expanded way beyond the remit of the book.In my Opinion, the worst actor was Sylvester McCoy, who I can not stand as an actor in any form. I seem to remember his character didn’t come into the original book.

I know that making 3 movies of one small book seems like a rip off but I did enjoy all 3 movies. It is not epic and detailed like the Lord of the Rings trilogy but still a great movie with quite a lot of nail biting.
However if you have a phobia for spiders – don’t watch.
Amazing story-line with so many twists on the original book and rather more grown-up, but not a dull moment in any of these films.
Smaug is unforgettable, only I would have preferred him red-gold rather than grey, but still fantastic to see.
A definite must for Tolkein fans, and good value for 3 full length films.
If you liked Lord of the Rings then you will love this. This Trilogy is better than Lord of the Rings. Stunning scenery, brilliant acting and the story brilliant. You watch one and want to watch the others straight after. Great for Adults that are young at heart and like films with action and humour.
Good value for money.Have spent happy hours watching it already.
Drew on more than the original book – I gather there were parts of the Simarillion included.
Not completely faithful to the original book of that title.
Another enjoyable visit to Middle Earth from Peter Jackson. Having read the book, I wondered how it could be stretched to three films, but, of course, Jackson introduced additional characters, notably Legolas and Tauriel. Some people seem upset by Tauriel’s love for Killi the Dwarf, but I don’t see why. At least it proved all Elves are not cold, controlled creatures, rather like the Vulcans in Star Trek.I liked Tauriel, superbly and sympathetically played by Evangeline Lilly. Because of the later LOTR trilogy, she could not marry Legolas – shame. There was lots of action, as you would expect.A fine set of excellent films, but I think Peter Jackson might well consider he has done all he can – another film might be risky. But I would like to know how Tauriel ended up.
A fantastic, absorbing trilogy. Yes, it’s recently been on television but this copy will be passed through my family. Truly excellent dvd.
very happy with my Hobbit Trilogy Blu Ray box set.
Good package well priced and worth it on blu recommended
Waited for the complete trilogy before watching any of the films
However screen play stretched and could easily been made in two parts
OK it’s a great movie and the HD is fantastic but I just read the book with my 9 year old and the movie is far removed from Tolkien’s book. The cynic in me thinks that this relatively modest book was padded out to make a trilogy. Tauriel is added for reasons best known to director Peter Jackson (surely not to get girls to watch the movie?) as well as a number of other unnecessary additions.
I’m a big fan. Not as epic as Lord of the rings but enjoyable never the less and joins up well as a prequel to the original blockbusters. More of the same with son epic battles against the orcs and other foes. Soundtrack and scenery equally as spell binding. A great adult children’s story.
Loved the films I can now watch all the hobbit followed by Lord of the rings was a great by will be watching over agai
It was delivered really quickly. Really good film couldn’t take my eyes off it.
Bought as a gift (and not yet handed over) so I cannot comment on the recording quality.
However the DVD’s arrived in good time, just as described, and very satisfactory.
Quite satisfied.
An epic fantastical adventure not to be missed. One word ….. BRILLIANT!!!!
An outstanding trilogy preceeding the Lots of the Rings trilogy
Lovely looking box set with full size DVD boxes! Can’t wait to give this as a gift!
Arrived within the estimated delivery. Item was as described. Great price
Fast delivery and does what It says on the box.
Have watched this over and over and enjoy it everytime
Fantastic 3 story collection which held my attention throughout. The films are lengthy but I did not realise how quickly that the time shot in. great stories, marvellous characters and I would certainly recommend it 100%
Brilliant… My two sons ( in their thirties ) keep trying to borrow the disc set but i will not let them!!!
I need to watch it at least three more times then i might let them!!
Very well done

The Hobbit trilogy with good extras. The Blu-ray comes in 3 separate cases. I like it in 1 slim case for the 3 discs.
Great storytelling. Absolutely thrilled watching this trilogy. Excellent acting by all. Highly recommend.
This is for Hubby, who is well pleased with it.
