The movies are classics that have stood the test of time.
The 4k discs are simply stunning, the image is sharp, crisp, bright and colourful.
I thought that the Blu-rays were good, but the 4K versions are on a different level, the picture quality is so deep and richly detailed that some scenes have astonishing depth and scale.
Sound quality is good also, but really it’s the gorgeous picture that hits you, “Fellowship” (my favourite of the three) is dripping with textures and colours that my old dvd and Blu-ray could never reveal.
I’ve got a fair few 4K titles, and to be honest some are barely better than the cheaper Blu-ray equivalent.
But The Lord of the Rings is not only worthy of the expense of upgrading, it is the demo of choice when you want to show newbies the power of what a proper 4K restoration and meticulous transfer can achieve.

*UPDATE: I spoke to Amazon’s Customer Services, and they were kind enough to offer a full refund for this item, despite it being more than a month outside of the normal return window. This is the first time I have ever received a broken DVD or Blu Ray from Amazon, so I suppose I was unlucky, especially considering the price of this box set. Since these are probably my all-time favourite films, I will purchase them again and hopefully the second box set will work 🙂

The films themselves are wonderful, it’s just a shame that I put Disc 1 of the Extended version of Two Towers into my Xbox, only to find that it is not working, despite this being a new (and 75!) boxset. Unfortunately, I ordered this in April but did not open it until last weekend, and there seem to be zero options for customer support. I’m very disappointed to have spent so much on a new item, only for it to not work.

It’s also worth comparing the packaging and contents to the Blu-ray extended edition, the latter of which came in a lovely box with a map of Middle-Earth. This, however, seems to come in less substantial and cheaper packaging, despite the price, which was disappointing.

This is an outstanding set, picture and sound are demonstration quality IMO. If you use a 5.1 sound system or better you are in for a treat, some of the best rear speaker usage I’ve ever heard, very immersive. I own the original extended dvd releases and never upgraded to Blu-ray, so paying out for this set was not so painful, I’m pleased I waited. Some reviews have commented about the information sheet glued onto the box, suggesting it’s pirated! Nonsense, this simply peels off to reveal the artwork underneath.

I think the DVDs where better packaged in the Extended four disc editions of the films.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersI was a little bit dubious about spending so much money on this 4K ultra HD box set but after just the first 10 minutes I knew it was worth it!!

The box set comes with all three theatrical films AND all three extended edition films (that’s 9 discs!) but non of the extended edition extras. The box isn’t too bulky either and can easily fit on my dvd shelf.

We currently have an OLED 4K ultra HD tv and have been watching this via a PS5 and the picture is AMAZING. there’s so much detail and so much added depth to the whole film. From blades of grass to the tiny individual drops of sweat there suddenly so much more to these films.

One of the most noticeable difference is the whole colour grade! It’s no longer too warm like the original VHS fellowship that I still have but also doesn’t have that awful blue tint of the blue ray editions. The greens are now perfectly green while the oranges and reds are still deep enough to not be effected by the added coolness. You can tell that a huge amount of time has been put in to fixing this and it’s very appreciated.

Overall I’m extremely pleased with this box set. It’s a huge improvement and so worth the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely LOVING the new colour grade and detailed picture.

Incredible the quality difference even compared to the blu ray version.

You see colours which haven’t been visible before like the gold in Gimlis helmet.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersIf you didn’t already know, this is probably the best trilogy of films ever. It’s a great story with unbelievably good visuals and excellent acting performances. Viggo Mortensen and Miranda Otto are the ones that particularly stand out for me, although Andy Serkis, Brad Dourif and John Noble are also excellent as characters you will love to hate. In fact, there isn’t a single flawed performance. Even John Rhys-Davies isn’t as embarrassing as usual. I have owned the standard definition extended versions since they first came out, and always planned to upgrade to Blu-Ray. So, when I saw that the whole thing was now available in 4K UHD, I didn’t hesitate. As well as the wonderful sharpness of the definition, the colours are much truer and brighter. I also really like that this box set has BOTH the extended versions and the theatrical versions in one package. Since buying it, I have watched the three extended editions (probably somewhere between my tenth and fifteenth time through, since they first came out) and will probably ‘go light’ with the theatrical versions next time. And, just in case you think I am an uncritical, died in the wool, Tolkien / Jackson fan, I should say that I am not a particular fan of the Hobbit trilogy. Of course, the production values are just as high, but they don’t have the heart, or epic scale, of Lord of the Rings.

Golden Review Award: 34 From Our UsersFirstly I can’t fault the dynamics of Amazons delivery on this occasion, I ordered it in the afternoon and it arrived in the evening about 3.5 hours after ordering, that’s insane.

Secondly whoever is saying this is missing scenes, its not. Each movie has 3 discs, disc 1 is the theatrical edition, discs 2 & 3 are the extended edition over 2 discs; come on people you can’t be that stupid. I should add the 4K set does not include appendices and behind the scenes yet. Also whoever tries to play this on a player that doesn’t support 4K (like a PS3 or DVD player) also needs to do an IQ test. For clarification you need 4K hardware to play these discs like a 4K player or PS5 etc..

LOTR remastered in 4K is testament to how ahead of its time this trilogy was. To be given an upgrade to modern HDR technologies and 4K upscaling, for deeper and more consistent visuals coupled with enhancements to the audio throughout makes this edition an absolute game changer for fans. It’s just as good as it was 20 years ago and BETTER. It’s a must!

Wow! Absolutely worth the price. We were hesitant to spend 75 on movies we already own on DVD, but the quality is SO good, it blew us away. I was soooo excited about these blu rays! I’ve been wanting them for so long, so as you can imagine I was quite heartbroken when they were delivered and I found that these discs aren’t playing in Xboxes. There’s no reason for this either, no explanation as to why they don’t work because all my other 4K ultra blu rays work. So my advice is to just be careful, the first disc worked after half an hour of resetting the Xbox, cleaning the disc, trying other discs and searching the web etc and then it worked for the duration. However neither the second part of the first movie or any of the other discs are working. Until this issue is addressed and fixed (Microsoft are being quite difficult about it) I’d suggest prolonging buying them because otherwise you’ll have your heart broken like I did.

I have been waiting for this 4k release of Lord of the Rings for ages and it doesn’t disappoint, finally the films have the picture and audio quality that they truly deserve to have.
    Absolutely amazing.
There are no extras worth talking about on the discs but that didn’t really bother me this time round.
I suspect there will be another 4k release soon with all the extras included which is just a money grabbing stunt. They should have just done it all in one release for the fans, most fans won’t be fooled by this usual trick to get even more money from them. I know I won’t. If they had of released this version with all the bells and whistles included but a bit more expensive I would have still bought it as would everyone else that has bought it already.
Stupid really, greed greed greed is all.
Still though, this basic film only version of the 4k restoration are perfect and will delight all amd that’s what it’s all about.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersBest quality 4K video I’ve seen, Peter Jackson has done an incredible job of bringing it up to date.

The colours are really vibrant, and the detail you didn’t see before, such as intricate designs in the weapons and armour, flowers in Hobbiton, elven architecture etc… It’s just beautiful. Listening with 3D headphones the sound is incredible.

A few of the previous reviews mention missing scenes cut from the extended dvds. I only recall one scene from Fellowship that seemed to be slightly smaller. Others mentioned “the mouth of Sauron” from Return of The King, however this is still there in the extended 4K.

There are actually several scenes throughout that have been re-edited to include additional dialogue, adding a bit more meaning and gravitas. No spoilers here, but definitely worth looking out for.

I love this trilogy of films, absolutely fantastic job of remastering and well worth Owning.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI’m one of those people who wasn’t really interested in The Lord of the Rings initially. I didn’t see The Fellowship of the Ring until a while after it’s cinema release on DVD. However once I did see it, I was hooked! I made sure I saw Two Towers and Return of the King in cinemas when they were released and then years later The Hobbit Trilogy.

I’m a fan of the Extended Blu-ray set, at that point the LOTR Trilogy had never looked and sounded so good……until now!

Stunningly upgraded visuals and enhanced sound really make this phenomenal journey and storytelling stand out like never before. Having the 4K UHD Trilogy makes sure you have both the Theatrical versions and Extended versions all in one set.

I had to purchase my copy from somewhere other than from Amazon as my order from Amazon was missing from a package that arrived with the other few items I ordered. This box set is a great purchase for anyone looking to upgrade their old discs or watch them for the first time. It includes 9 discs, 6 for the extended editions and 3 for the theatrical versions. It is however, a bit of a shame that the extras are missing which were included in previous editions.

The films have definitely been improved with shaper images, better colours and impressive audio. I have seen other reviews that claimed the discs didn’t run so make sure that your player can actually play 4k discs before purchasing (PS3 I’m looking at you)!

All in all, a must have for any Lord of the Rings fan!

It goes without saying these films are the best fantasy films ever made and I love the extended versions of these. I could never go back to the theatrical versions.
I’m not sure this is worth the upgrade from the the Blu-ray extended additions as you get far more for your money with so many extras and The hobbit trilogy also included.

Box includes both extended and original theatre versions, both in 4k.
As for the extended versions, each movie is cut across 2 discs, albeit the final 10 minutes are given over to a list of the fan club members. The theatrical release versions are a single disc per movie.
We’ve owned these movies on dvd and the original “extended edition” bluray yet there are countless scenes here that we’ve never seen before which fill some of the background to the stories you’ll have missed if you’ve never read the books. I can only assume people saying there’s nothing new are either reviewing a previous (or pirate) editions (I didn’t find much new in the original bluray versions tbh) or they have simply watched the wrong discs.
Unfortunately 4k cannot prevent Elijah Wood being as two dimensional as ever. His “I think I’ve messed my pants” face is up there with Roger Moore’s eyebrow imo.
Still a movie triumph though and a real feast for the eyes in 4k.
No hesitation in awarding 5 stars

  58. Anonymous says:

I had seen the entire work on blu ray, but the 4k version is a higher level altogether. True HD sound is the best I’ve heard from home cinema speakers and the picture quality is magnificent – on a similar level to Seven Worlds, One Planet. It’s given me a much higher regard for the cinematography. The effects are amazing. The 4k set includes extended version discs of each film as well as the theatrical versions – which is lucky because one one of the extended version discs threw up an ‘incompatible’ message and would not play. Hence four stars, not five. Well worth the money, even with no extras.

Absolutely amazing visuals enhanced by this new version. The 4K does not detract by making it look unreal, but actually provides a fully immersive experience. I think a few people have bought this thinking it will work on a standard DVD player so have marked it down. This does require a 4k DVD player and this should be made clear.

Golden Review Award: 14 From Our UsersIn my opinion, ‘The Lord of The Rings’ trilogy is the best movie-series
    ever made.
This 9-disc set includes 2 discs per movie for each of the extended
versions and one disc each for the theatrical (I myself accompanied by
my daughter did see all three at the cinema when first released)
Like many, did buy theatrical versions when first released on Blu-ray and
indeed the extended Blu-ray box-set, guess you could say I was totally
hooked on the films, now, with the release of the 4K version I find myself
investing further (suspect I am not the only one on the LOR journey?)
The upgrade to the 4K format is frankly stunning, the picture quality so
much better than previously available for viewing….clearly a worthwhile
investment for admirers of the trilogy.
The trilogy tells of Frodo’s ( Elijah Wood) dangerous quest to destroy
the ring of power, the superbly filmed and staged battles for Middle Earth
and the date with destiny for Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen)
Life in the Shire is without worries for the Hobbit’s, blissfully unaware of the
    dangers brewing in near-by lands.
Bilbo now 111 decides it is time to retire to quieter climes to finish his book
leaving his belongings and home to his much younger second cousin who
    he’d adopted in years past.
Among the possessions a ring, which is explained as very dangerous and
powerful to Frodo by Wizard and friend Gandalf (Ian Mckellan)
Bilbo(Ian Holm) its guardian for many years after finding it in a cave occupied
by the creature Gollum (Andy Serkis) who had been consumed by the rings
power during the 500 years he’d had it after finding the ring that had been lost
for 2500 years, Gollum had accidentally dropped the ring.
Later, understanding the importance of the ring and the need to destroy
it in the fires of Mount Doom where it had originally been forged Frodo
volunteers to take on the task.
He is joined initially on his quest by loyal-friend Sam (Sean Astin) and a
little later by friends from the Shire the fun-loving Pippin (Billy Boyd) and
Merry (Dominic Monaghan) the latter two would eventually become separated
from their friends and unwittingly join a quest of their own.
The four become joined to guide Frodo on his way by Aragorn, Legolas (Orlando
Bloom) a prince of Elves, Boromir (Sean Bean) a prince of the Stewards of Gondor, dwarf-warrior Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and Gandalf The Grey.
Gandalf is aware that they are being followed by the wretched creature Gollum.
The group encounters dangerous issues prior to Frodo who will be joined by Sam as they really start the perilous journey to Mount Doom.
Not really knowing the way, they take up the offer by Gollum who in truth only wants the ring back, to guide them, though Sam is deeply suspicious of the creature.
Meanwhile, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli prepare to join in the fight first for Helms Deep, then for Gondor and Middle Earth.
While Pippin and Merry meet trees that talk prior to becoming part of the plot to overthrow Saruman the White: (Christopher Lee) who does the bidding of Sauron Lord of Mordor and its armies of Orcs
Will Frodo overcome the journey’s dangers and destroy the ring?
Will the battle for Middle Earth be won by Aragorn and his followers?
    Will Aragorn fulfill his destiny?
The trilogy also starring Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett among the many in this all
    star spectacle.
The exciting Special-Effects enhanced trilogy is exciting and indeed a spectacle to behold.
Certainly, a film series you’ll watch many times over. (And of course, there is also Bilbo’s adventure in The Hobbit trilogy)

Golden Review Award: 67 From Our UsersI recently indulged in a new 4K TV OLED + UHD player and this is the third 4k release I’ve bought. It’s an expensive set, but it looks legit to my eyes. The clarity and HDR impact is happily VERY evident versus the earlier Blu-Ray and DVD sets before it, of which I’ve owned all of those over the years. I don’t have a sound bar yet, so can’t comment on the Atmos surround, but even on the TV, which has an internal Atmos I appreciated a capable sound.

No extras, no commentaries, so I will drop a star as I do think this set could have easily kept the commentaries from the old sets, but in a way I also like it. I’m now only tempted to watch the movies, and that’s what this set is. This is all about this crazy new HDR and 4k presentation. It also misses the digital copies that are on the US set, but really, if you’re looking for digital, you may as well invest in a streaming service as opposed buy these sets, because you’re paying for UHD.

Some may know of a greenish tint that was washed over the first movie in the old blu-ray set. This was apparently a mistake in the colour grading that altered it from the original look. It became the version everybody has lived with since on blu-ray and digital. This set corrects that and also, now all three films look consistent against each other.

I read that the films have been rescanned in 4k from the original 35mm negatives, although can’t say I’ve seen anything official on it. Either way, I couldn’t be happier with the visuals and sound so far but no commentaries will be a bit of a shame for some, especially if you never bought the earlier discs.

Golden Review Award: 52 From Our UsersThis version of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is amazing. The extra scenes make it well worth the wait and the price paid for it.

As many will do and have done, I will not throw in any spoilers except to say the extended version includes many more scens that are missing from the theatrical / cinema version. The reason being that the extended versions are the full movies, which had to be cut to make the length more suitable for cinema viewing. These movies could easily have been made into six movies rather than three simply by having the The Fellowship of the Ring Part 1 / Part 2, The Two Towers Part1 / Part…. but then it might have put people off watching them in the cinema if they are going to have to pay double to watch a whole movie.

This 4K version is very good value for money as it costs nearly 40 for two people to go to the cinema in some parts of London and that doesn’t include the rubbery old hotdog or the stale popcorn that is no longer made fresh on site or even the overdiluted soft drinks that cost 5 each. So, for less price for two people to go to the cinema to watch all three movies you get to buy them to watch as often as you want and with as many people as you want, you only have to provide the popcorn.

Now for the quality of the movie. The quality is far greater than that of which you watched in the cinema, it is clearer and you notice more of the background. It is not quite 3D but is 1/2 way there. It’s a little like watching 3D without the glasses but the foreground does not quite stand out as much.

Before buying this box set and complaining that it’s rubbish, as many do, you have to consider your devices. If you have a 4K “Upscaling” TV, the quality will not be as good as intended. If your BluRay Player is a 4K upscaling one then the quality will not be as good as intended. If either or both of your tv and BluRay Player are 4K ” upscaling” then the quality will not be as intended. For the best quality imagery both the BluRay Player and the TV have to be “native 4K” So, if you buy this box set and you are using a 4K Upscaling device then you cannot complain that the quality is poor as it’s not the BluRay Disk, nor is it the content that make the quality poor, it is your old HD TV that can’t produce 4K content or your 4K upscaling TV. However, what I am keen to read about is reviews from those with 8K upscaling TVs as I can imagine the huge difference in quality but then I could be wrong as the higher resolution may just distort the quality and make it as bad as 2K TV quality.

For the length of the movies, the entertainment value, the extra scenes and the quality of this box set I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! Not quite 3D without glasses but getting there...

Golden Review Award: 48 From Our UsersMinimal grain throughout, and what is there is presented in a consistent way.

The films already looked reasonably sharp but there is definitely an increase in fine details, with some images very sharp and showing up new elements that weren’t as obvious before.

Lighting and colour is VASTLY improved…previous versions of TFotR had an…exciting…use of colour. Everything in this looks far more natural. That does mean some scenes are a bit more subdued, but that just adds strength and drama to the scenes where the colour is used to great and sometimes striking effect.

I’ve spotted a couple of tweaks so far that correct issues in the original. If changing a film after the fact bothers you then they are not enough to cause too much concern, so minimal in fact that I went back to the originals to check. This is not George Lucas we’re talking about here.

Overall what this 4K edition gives you is a clarity and depth to the films that weren’t there before.

Nothing really pops off the screen…everything just conspires to drag you in. If you were into these films before you’re never gonna leave now.

If you’ve not seen these films then this is the version to watch.

If you have seen them and are already a fan I don’t think you will be disappointed with this purchase.

Although they are about 3 hours long each. these films are riveting and do not feel that long at all. I’ve always liked them but never had the BluRays before.

Box stated it contains 6 discs, 3 for the films, 3 for the special features, The Return of the King only contained the film and no 2nd disc slot for the special features disc which was not contained. Films were enjoyable as always. Extra special features on the film discs themselves felt tacky.

Can’t add to what people already know about this trilogy just to say that I had to upgrade from DVD to BluRay and wasn’t disappointed and at this price I just couldn’t turn it down (9.99)

There surely can’t be many people who haven’t already seen the three Lord of the Rings films, but this is a bargain price box set of this phenomenal trilogy and definitely worth buying. For those that have seen these films, watching them again (and again) can be an even more rewarding experience.

If you want to complete the adventure, from the beginning, then also consider The Hobbit Trilogy [DVD] [2015 ]
