Secure but...
Bought this lock to replace a similar model. Although it looks identical to the earlier unit and has BS 8621:2007 rating, there have been some changes to its quality of manufacture. The interior latch handle in particular, that used to be smooth at the back is now hollow backed with distinct ridges that make it quite uncomfortable to use.
Excellent heavy duty lock.
This is now on my door. It is a very good weighty lock, it does actually close without having to bang the door so hard you bring the house down like my old one. The inside key operated lock for deadlocking the handle from the inside is smooth and easy. Simply lock it when you go out, close the door and the handle can’t be opened from inside until you use the key, no burglar will get out if they’ve gotten in from the back. When you come home the key will open the door from outside but the inside handle will still remain in the locked position so, once inside when you cose the door again, the handle is still deadlocked until you open it with the key, handy at night if you have glass paneled door. Some people have complained about the back of the handle being hollow…sharp..not a problem in my view..This is a good quality heavy duty lock. As it is an automatic deadlock when you close the door, I no longer have to lock it with the key from outside when I go out to deadlock it.
Harder than you think to install
The locks good and does the job. I found a problem with my door due to it being a pretty old Victorian wood door, the wood which would hold the escutcheon back wasn’t substantial enough. A better design would be to have the bolts fixing back to the main metal plate which would spread this load onto the metal rather than relying on the wood door.
Dimension image is misleading
I bought this and sent it back, the dimension image indicates that the key barrel is 40mm from the end of the lock the same as my existing Yale one. This is incorrect as it is actually 60mm.
Other than that the lock is sting and sturdy. I will seek to find the correct one
Yale lock
Yale are great locks, this one fitted well and is good quality.
Quick reliable service Great products cheap price
5 star service. Quick delivery and great customer service. Worth 6 stars actually.
Good lock but check size required !
This is a very solid and impressIve looking lock and good value. Unfortunately I had to return it unopened as I misunderstood the 40/60 sizing. This relates to the distance from the centre of the outside keyhole to the edge of the door. If you are replacing an old lock you need to get this right !
Great produc
I really love this product. Really good I bought this.
Does the job.
Looks good.
I had it installed on a composite door.
Solid lock but not easy to fit.
Not easy to fit using the supplied template – difficult to position accurately. Ended up have to fill and redrill holes. If I was doing it again I would only use the template for the cylinder holes and then use the lock itself and the backing plate to get the rest of the holes accurate.
Not an easy retro-fit for an old rim-latch installatio
Whilst the internal latch unit and striker in the shut comfortably covered the old Legge rim-latch footprint, the door pull external escutcheon could not be fitted to include the two large security bolts beside the old 35 mm -‘ish barrel hole in this hardwood door. An additional plate to span the 35 mm hole would be needed to make use of those bolts in an upgrade situation. The barrel is adequately secured by the conventional two smaller screws passed through the anti-drill latch back-plate, however.
The mechanism is pleasantly heavyweight in the latch body and the striker plate. The paper templates provided are inadequate – printed on poor, flimsy paper in dreadful colour contrast. I did not use them! Accurate positioning of the striker plate – when setting the closure depth – was very much trial-and-error. Good templates might have helped. An old trick of putting only one of the four screws in place – to test the closure – did enable a few attempts to get reliable closure without door rattle or latch pin binding.
As a blind DIYer, my estimate of “2 hours” turned into 4 ! My wife has removed my ‘type rating’ for this job next time. It would have been much easier on a new door! Bear this in mind on any DIY retrofit!
Excellent lock
This replaced the old standard type of lock, greatly improved security. Yes the inside door handle isn’t filled in on the back like some people mention. But the lock is absolutely fantastic offering good security features and it also seems to sound (reassuring strong clunk when shutting) and feel more secure than the previous one. I know perhaps a little odd to write but just something I noticed! Only thing I’d say is I wanted an official Yale key cut exactly the same as the ones provided but I haven’t yet found anywhere which does them.
Secure and strong
Best choice of lock i have ever bought, feels so secure
I got the 40 mm, Dark Metallic Finish version to replace our old Yale B-2-DMG-PB-40 that we started having issues where it would stick when opened.
I have yet to install this new one due to the very cold weather, but I can say its a lot heavier than the old lock.
I did read that a some people have received cheaply looking versions that call it an “economy” handle, I brought the Visi Pack version and I can confirm that its not the cheap version the handle is in fact a solid version like shown in the product description.
So I am not too sure what versions those unlucky people got were, maybe I was sent the old version or maybe Yale have moved back to the more solid handle version.
I can confirm that getting the key into the lock can be tricky, especially with the so called “anti drill” plate.
So overall I am very happy with this product.
As other reviews have mentioned, the hollowing out of the internal handle seems a miserly cost-cutting move. However the lock is otherwise sturdy and well constructed. One word of warning – the staple is not identical to earlier versions (it’s an improvement on them) so if fitting this as a direct replacement then some adjustments will be needed
It does the job well
This is my second and am well pleased
If needed, I would buy a third.
Great lock
Takes a while to get it all set up, but it really is a solid lock for the front door. Extra sturdy and easy to open/close.
Whilst fitting you really get the idea how much added security it adds to your home.
Nice and smooth operatio
Nice solid lock ! No one is getting in my shed
Perfec
Fit these generally when asked to di front doir nightlatch
Always recommend .
Delivery was qick and price was excella
good but fiddly to fi
good lock but fiddly to fit, even when using the instructions etc. large heavy but secure
Gives a good sense of security to front door.
Fitted this for a friend who wanted to upgrade front door lock. Good brand and a sturdy looking lock. Delivered on time and good price!
Solid, robust lock. Easy to fi
Replaced broken lock on front door. Very robust and simple to fit using templates provided.
High quality, heavy duty and worth every penny when you hear it 'clunk' shu
A beast of a lock! This will not disappoint if you are looking for a lock for a traditional wooden door. Instructions are easy to understand but you will need tools and skills to fit this. The lock is well made, heavy duty and gives you the confidence that it will perform and last. Expensive, yes, but of the best of quality and you can tell the insurance people that your locks do conform to British Standards.
Solid, easy to fit lock - massive
I bought this lock to replace an older Yale lock on our front door. The lock is big, shiny, and solid. The included screws are also reassuring solid. I’m sure that the door frame would give way before this lock does.
Great price and quality
Great product and great price. It was 130 in our local locksmith shop!
Big, easy to fi
Not as solid as what they used to be but still solid enough to cause a big headache to aburglars
Solid lock. Worth every penny.
Good solid lock. Deadlock is great. Locking handle is a great thing.
Once closed grea
Well produced lock and comprehensive instructions. It was fitted as per the instructions however the lock does not easily close as the latch bindes on the keep. It is getting better after four months but still not a smooth closing process
Good price for quality
Yale the quality is a forgone conclusion, & the price was good
Excellent Quality
Excellent quality product.
Received in advance of expected date.
Would recommend.
Obviously works well as a BS approved lock. However Yale has cheapened the design from the last ones we bought. The handle is now a cast piece, hollow on the back with rough protrusions which catch the fingers. Previously it was a smooth, solid piece which fitted the fingers perfectly. Every time we open the door we’re reminded of this cost saving approach. Shame really.
This lock looks and feels solid and is well known by locksmiths as a good lock that you can depend on to work well, with a London bar on the lock body and one on the keep to prevent punch out it has added power? The London bars are coach bolted through the door to be seen from the outside, as it is worth letting the bad guy know before he starts to work on your door! With the U channel and rail to stop jam spreading, this really tells the bad guys to walk on past! the 5 lever mortice and the 3 star Yale euro it means the robbers have to have many skills to get in! The added long throw lock and another euro deadbolt on the top rail I feel safe to leave my house for long periods, Having some homemade exterior warding made from steel hanging around the lock on the top rail makes it harder to use a tension wrench, this makes it harder to pick the lock! Bolting the jam to the frame with 3 inch bolts helps prevent kick in attacks as do hinge bolts, keep everything tight with insulation to reduce any movements in the door too! Outside lights are a good way to put off robbers, stickers on the glass panels can help laminate the glass making it harder to break! The stickers like mine can be of a barking dog, Karate and telling of security marked property to put them off entering in the first place? My dog had a big water bowl beside my front door, often with a big well chewed bone! Image is everything when defending your home, buy some neighbourhood watch sticker even if there is no scheme in place as a robber may not know that? Think about what you do and don’t be the one house with less security than the rest, that’s the one they’re searching for after all? Don’t feel scared but don’t be afraid to look like you are, have as I do an alarm but have dummy alarm boxes to all sides of the house. A silent alarm sticker costs very little but sews the seeds of doubt that might with other things cause them to walk away from your house before they do damage to it, Imagine you were thinking about robbing your house what would put you off it most and why, most robbers are poorly skilled but some are good so by really testing the good ones you have eliminated the badly skilled ones! Your house is worth it, you may have seen the devastated look on the face of one who has been robbed so don’t let your self be one of them?
Excellant strong brass door lock, a quality product a reasonable price

Bargain item really strong, bit fiddly but worked it out, looks great and feels really strong. Quick arrival. Recommend selle
Good Quality Night Latch
Great night latch. High quality as you would expect from Yale. Take your time fitting and it’s perfect.
Yale - cutting quality
Like-for-like replacement lock. Inside latch handle has been hollowed out to save a few grams of metal and now feels thin and cheap – great shame
Looks smart - bit fiddly to fi
Great lock; used a carpenter to fit as it looked more complicated than previous Yale locks – he cursed a lot but managed it in the end!
It looks really easy to fit and I cracked in through the process ...
So, this is one of the more secure nightlatches. It looks really easy to fit and I cracked in through the process until 5hours later I called out a locksmith and secured my house for the night. In essence, the bolts were too long or my door to narrow. It looks nice. It’s modern.
Very secure.
Very secure, the cover that sits within the face of the lock it a bit painful, but that’s why it’s there, you have to wiggle round it. Very secure though.
Chunky monkey
It’s a good chunky lock asume being British standard and Yale should be ok.
It has excellent features and should be the only one you consider ...
This lock is everything you need. It has excellent features and should be the only one you consider if you want to keep burglars outside your front doo
quite easy to fix
solid night latch, quite easy to fix. would be 4 stars, but having contacted Yale to attempt to obtain manufacturer approved extra keys, was told they couldn’t for mine as the key ‘code’ was missing. In the end; and was advised to; to go and cut a copy myself.
Make sure it will fit your door - bolts included are too short for a thick hardwood door.
The lock appears sturdy but the retaining bolts provided are not long enough for the thickness of hardwood door that I am trying to fit it to (55 mm). The minimum thickness (defined by the rebate) is 30 mm and the maximum thickness with the bolts provided is about 45 mm, because they are only 50 mm long. So make sure it will fit your door! Meanwhile I will have to source some longer bolts.
Very good quality lock
Seriously heavy duty lock that’s looks and feels great. Was a bit tricky to fit because I was replacing a different sized lock but once done it’s been great. The lock can be deadlocked by turning the key from the inside before pulling the door shut. This means that it can’t be swiped open by a credit card or or opened from the inside even if a burglar was to gain access to your property from another door or window. I’m impressed with this lock even compared to other Yale locks I have on other doors.
Highly recommended!!
Decent lock. However, if you had one of these previously then it’s a bit disappointing as they have scrimped on the handle. The handle used to be solid and nice to use, this is no longer the case, there’s now a gap behind the handle. Something I’m going to have to get used to. Essentially it’s not as ergonomic.
and pretty easy to fi
Strong lock, and pretty easy to fit. Loses a star because our one has become a bit sticky and annoying after about 6 months of ownership.
Chunky !
This lock is very solid . Quite heavy , and makes a real clunk if you just push the door shut .
However ,you can close door quietly, by using handle , or key.
The instructions were clear .
I fitted it myself . Looks good 🙂
Great locks
Bought to replace old Yale locks. Our insurance company wanted us to fit better locks with a deadlock feature. You can deadlock them from inside with a key. Great if you have a glass door as they can’t get in even if they break the glass and reach inside. Meets the British standard for high security door locks.
The looks look stylish and are easy to fit with basic tools and DIY knowledge.
You get two new keys with the lock and it’s easy to get more cut at any hardware store.
Four Stars
Good solid lock, but must be old stock as brass body was tarnished in places.
Happy
Gr8 lock suprized at the size of it but never mind it makes me feel secure very good lock would certainly recommend
Very secure
Recommended by a locksmith. My father has had one of these for at least 15 years. Hard to initially install as you have to get it just right but once installed it’s great. Word of warning: if you need extra keys, keep a receipt as it took me 3 different tries to get a key that works. Maybe the particular key cutting shop wasn’t great but who knows.
Great quality
Fiddly to fit but you won’t get better quality. Note I had to buy to replace another that I had where the brass around teh keyentry had blsitered over the years. You can’t buy just that part so I had to buy an entire new lock.

High quality product from yale. Only setback is if you are out without keys, you are stuck as it would be auto lock.
I was asked a question, but by the time I came to respond the discussion had been closed down: so here is some information which may help>
The question was about suitability for an external gate.
This is a high spec deadlock to British Standard 3621: the deadlock can be set or opened from both sides using the key. I fitted this lock to my front door at the insistence of my insurer who would no longer accept my vintage 1965 Yale deadlock as suitable for purpose because it was not certified to the BS.
This lock is probably over engineered for use on an external gate where a determined “visitor” could probably climb over. A less expensive device would probably suffice.
The dimensions in mms are:
lock 90w x 90h x 90d (90d is 30 for handle / 30 for lock body / 30 for fixing plate at right angles to the door surface)
opposing plate /socket 20w x 90h x 70d (70d is 30 for socket / 40 for the fixing plate at right angles to the door frame)
The hole through the door for external locking is centred 60 from the door edge
So to make secure use of this lock the door / gate must be more than 30 thick and the frame must be more than 40 thick.
Hope this helps
Latchtastic!
Very heavy duty night latch and feels it by the weight and quality compared to my current lock. A bit fiddly to fit so care needs to be taken reading the instructions and working out all the correct screw hole sizes and rebating required. I would say to fit this lock you need to be reasonably competent and have the right tools, drill sizes, chisels etc. Also helps if the main lock hole is the correct distance from the edge of the door but otherwise the larger dimensions than most locks of this type will probabaly cover any previous screw holes in the door and the frame.

Great price for quality product. Really heavyweight, and feels robust.
A big, heavy, quality night latch
Bigger than it looks, and heavy, this is a top quality item. Only 2 keys included, so plan on visiting the locksmiths to have more cut. Takes a few hours to fit with chiseling needed to the door and frame. Follow the instructions, get the right tools, take your time and you’ll have a great result.
great, sturdy and secure lock – just what you want. Wife hates it as she thinks its too big and ugly on the door but I wanted something you can feel is secure and would stand up to someone trying to force or pick. The plate on the key lock moves to stop it being picked, and so only downside is that it can be a little fiddly sometimes at getting the key in straight away. But as its on a inner door and not front door its not like we get wet or cold whilst doing it so doesn’t bother me. very happy with it.
For a company known for it’s high quality products – this excellent sturdy lock is badly let down by an inaccurate template. I had seen other reviews mention this, but chose to put my faith in Yale expecting they had corrected the problem. NOT SO – using the template, very accurately the holes were drilled. BUT I was shocked to find they did not line up ! I was forced to fill two of the holes with dowels, make my own template, drill new holes and successfully install the lock. WHY YALE does not seem to be aware of this important problem which only damages their reputation and annoys customers is a mystery. DO they ever check the instructions and those vitally important installation drawings?
——— IF you do manage to get this product installed without damaging your door – I do recommend the lock itself. — But why only 2 keys with such an expensive lock? – not expensive to get a third cut but very inconvenient.
Quality produc
Well engineered product that works well, although it was not easy to fit to an older door with a previous nightlatch site.
Very happy with these locks
Very happy with these locks, which replaced some decidedly inferior (though much cheaper) identical-looking locks from a competitor. These ones fit neatly, work smoothly, and seem overall a quality product which can be fitted by J Random Handyman fairly easily (if I’m anything to go by). I should have bought Yale in the first place, and will do so in future.
yale lock
great lock a little bit on the big size but thats because i was using a door with a small stile
I would willingly have paid an extra 50p to have been supplied with a choice of screw and bolt lengths to avoid the problems of sawing the ends off to make those supplied the correct length.
Although good the instructions could do with being clearer, particularly for right side hinged doors.
Once fitted the product is very good.
I was surprised at the weight and size of this when it was delivered. From the pictures it was not clear how large and heavy it was. However, being this big and heavy it is presumably very secure now fitted. It has a strange mechanism though. To lock the inside handle, to ensure nobody can get in by opening it through the letter box, one has to open the door, lock the lock with the key then go out and close the door. There is no further double locking from the outside. Also this means to securely lock at night the door is not openable from the inside without the key. This seems to me to be a possible danger especially if there is a fire and one is slightly panicky. So, I leave the key in the lock overnight.
Pleased so fa
I bought this lock for my new front door, it has not been fitted yet. So far I can only say that it looks solid and the price was much lower than those in shops. Prompt delivery which is a plus when you buy online.
Excellent value for money. Easy to fit, did go slightly out when working to the template – but that was my fault for not reading the instructions first. A bit of unprofessional drilling got me back on track and no harm done. The lock has a solid feel to it – far better than the smaller one i had fitted before. I like the extra security feature of being able to lock the lever mechanism from the inside – won’t be able to use that old broom handle through the letter box to open the lock any more if I go out without my keys.
o problems
A bxxxx to install but it is a great product – try one. Get more keys though. Solid, heavy weight and good value.
Excelle
Follow the instructions exactly and this is a rewarding experience fitting it yourself. The product is a top quality lock and arrived promptyly in perfect condition.
Bought this lock a while back. Looked like most other locks. Until it arrived. It is huge! And heavy. When installed in the door it simply looks like fortress keeper. Any other locks on the door just fade out in comparison. Works well too. Very solid, responsive and looks unique. One thing though – only use it for doors with limited frame width. For anything else go for further distance from door edge. Simply for security.
Recommend.
Yale Lock
This Yale lock is very strong, sturdy and will secure your property, I recommend this Yale lock to any look to secure there property.
I fitted one of these yesterday. I bought it to replace an old, cheap front door nighlatch that had become unreliable. My property is now compliant with the requirements for my insurance company to give me a premium discount.
The packaging is the usual horrible hard, sharp plastic, which causes maximum frustration and requires care to avoid injury. It’s also tricky to remove the product from the packaging without damaging the fitting instructions.
Considering myself to be only average at DIY jobs, I decided to follow the instructions fairly carefully, as they looked to be quite involved; 17 steps. I now wish I hadn’t bothered as I found the templates to be plain wrong and the instructions to be unclear.
At one point I thought failure was inevitable. I couldn’t get the heads of the bolts in the mounting plate to be accessible to screw them in. But when replacing a front door lock, failure is not an option. After a good ten minutes head scratching and slight panicking, I discovered that the final sentence in step 11, “You may need to turn the key…” is in fact critical. There is no MAY about it. And, as I was following the instructions in a logical, sequential manner, I only read that sentence after I’d almost given up. OK, maybe partly my fault, but it would be so clear and easy to say “turn the key first, then fit the bolts.” Perhaps my moan will help someone else.
Step 2 tells you to drill two 13mm holes, where 8-9mm holes are actually required. And the instructions for hole diameters on the template contradict the separate written ones.
All in all the instructions are dangerously wrong in certain places. If I had drlled two 13mm holes as instructed there’d be little left of my front door.
To cut a long moan short, I think it’s really more or less obvious how to fit the lock; it’s not rocket science. Just look and think. Personally, I’d’ve been better off just using my common sense, not the templates and instructions. I accept it’s not easy to write clear instructions for such a job but for a company such as Yale, I think they could be much improved.
The lock itself is a good product and once fitted, works well. This is the maximum security nightlatch available in the Yale range.
One last niggle. It would have been nice to be supplied with more than 2 keys for a top-of-the-range lock. Surely it’s not that expensive to throw in an extra key at the manufacturing stage? Is my family the only one to need more than 2 front door keys? Now I have to go straight out and get copies, which is more expense and inconvenient.
Massive!
Be aware this is a very large lock, it weighs a ton and dominates both the front and back sides of a standard domestic door. Certainly a statement!. Build quality appears A+
Fantastic
Good quality, simple to connect and use.
delivery was good as well, Brought the yale preminum security system and needed something other than the fob key for the house. small and compact.
Lock
The lock was new and arrived safely. It was heftier than expected and not suitable for the door intended even though it was presented as a standard door lock. I am not dissatisfied with the product and can use it elsewhere.
