Ease of use, stay in place while running that’s a first for me no fiddling about to secure in place you could easily forget your wearing ear phones, sound is great while you still pick up traffic etc for safety

You can use them in races
I bought these because I wanted some ear phones for my first half marathon and these were perfect! Great sound quality and no one else can hear your music which is what I thought may be the case.

The battery lasts for ages, even if you forget to turn them off after a run like I often do!

    Fantastic ear phones
Love love love these ear phones !!!

I so much more prefer this style of ear phone with them not going into my ear.

The quality is excellent, as is the sound quality.

I would recommend these to anyone to try.

Great when earphones won’t stay pu
I have searched for years for earphones that will stay in my (presumably odd shaped) ears while doing anything remotely active. I even tried moulded earphones with limited success.

I never wanted headphones as they were all so bulky, or gaudy with various celebrity endorsements. I just wanted some (wireless) device that would let me listen to music/podcasts/streaming while not remaining perfectly still.

These have been an absolute revelation. They stay put, they don’t budge when I am sprinting, lifting, or doing DIY and I don’t get paranoid that they will fall out at the slightest provocation.

I was initially skeptical about how well they would stay in place as I have tried ‘over the ear’ hook type earphones before, but the combination of the over the ear design and the hairband-like pressure keep them firmly in place without being painful or distracting.

The sound quality is pretty good, but not perfect, but that is the trade off when you don’t have in ear devices. The controls are straightforward, the battery is far more than any casual athlete needs for a week’s workouts, and the Bluetooth was problem free. The added bonus of being more aware of your environment while running was a nice touch.

I would heartily recommend these to those who have failed to find any in-ear device that will stay put and are ready to give up altogether. I’m totally converted!

    Great for running and work
    I have used these everyday.
I use them for running and for when I am at my desk. The sound quality is passable and the ability to hear my surroundings is fantastic. They feel great although I have only had them a few weeks.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersLove these headphones
I bought these headphones because I wear hearing aids. I can no longer use ear bud type phones because they cause problems in my ear canals. I can use the OpenMove headphones with or without my hearing aids. I don’t do sport but they are ideal to keep awareness of the world around me while listening to something on the phones and strolling around the park. I mainly use them for talk radio or podcasts. I do listen to music too and have been impressed with the quality although bass frequencies are slightly less. If you use the supplied ear plugs with them though you get full range of bass and higher frequencies. They can be loud. There are three EQ settings – standard – vocal boost – earplugs. ‘Audrey ‘ is clear when she tells you which setting you are on or when she welcomed you to aftershokz when you turn the unit on. Pairing is fast and connection is good and carries for an impressively long distance. Charging is simple with a couple of hours for charging and around six hours of use. I haven’t used them for phone calls yet but given the overall quality I expect them to be really good. They came with a storage bag and stickers to customise them if you want to. Instructions are clear. The set is comfortable to wear and stays in place. I wear glasses too which is fine. Glasses hearing aids headphones and a mask is a right faff. Hearing aids usually go flying when taking a mask off. Usually I just do headphones and glasses for daily use. Wouldn’t it be great if Aftershokz made these with a setting to work as hearing aids too?!
I love these OpenMove headphones and am very happy to recommend them.

    Fantastic, very impressed!
I heard about these headphones on Chris Evans breakfast show. I did some research and watched a YouTube review and then ordered them immediately.
I have one permanently perforated eardrum, so I always miss some sound and cannot hear in stereo.
These headphones bypass that problem and sound is now picked up by both ears as the sound is going through bone and not eardrums.
The sound quality is very good and great for audiobooks and podcasts.
They are very light and comfortable, in fact I can’t even feel them.
I wish I’d known about them years ago.

    Great for runners
I have been a runner for 30+ years, these are easily the best headphones I have ever used. No problems with dropping out of ears, in fact they don’t even go in the ears and as a person who has earwax issues they are perfect. No comments about sound quality good or bad, I am not that discerning, just know that using for running 10/10

    Great sound.
Easy to use, great battery life, and to my none audiophile ear, great sound. These do not cancel noise, as that is their selling point, you can hear the world around you whilst wearing them. Ear plugs will muffle the outside world if that is what you need. I like how it will let other devices link with my phone should I need to change my sound source a robust and wekl thought out product.

Comfortable to wear, sound is great, but everyone else close by also hears it. Would be good for running, but not ideal in the gym.

    Exceeded my expectatio
Initially I was not expecting much, and I really prefer to listen to music while doing workout in the gym to block anything and anyone out, rather than have both…
However as life changed and working from home became a norm having house life (delivery, neighbours, doorbell, food ready dong etc) and having online meetings made me thing this is actually perfect, as there is nothing at home that I want to block out – opposite, I do want to know what is happening. So I gave it a chance when it was on sale (AfterShokz OpenMove Wireless Sport Headphones).
I have not used it for sport yet, but I have a feeling for that I will prefer to have everything blocked out and will use my iShuffle.
The sounds is surprisingly good, it gets a bit iffy for me when I use near to max volume – but this might be totally personal.
I find it hard sometimes to focus when I use it in the office, again you need to pick and choose what you are using for. I highly recommend it, certainly keeps you safe running/cycling/walking on the streets.
The only thing to consider for example I have very flat ears so for me this makes my ears a bit Dopey as the unit is right behind my ears. I think I should have tried on the other ones, but I had one points to go by as well that this has the USB-C cable so I do not need to keep 2 cables one for my phone and one for this to be charged, so overall no regrets, but I would prefer if the unit would not be that close to my ear to make me Dopey – and of course this is not about the look, but it means it is a bit unstable for me as my ears do not hold it as much like normal ear type of people 😉

Very secure fit but extraneous noise intrudes
They fit securely yet are very comfortable. I like that I do not have to take them off to listen to external conversations or traffic when cycling. The downside to this of course is that extraneous noise can be intrusive if you are listening to a podcast.

    Great for running
Ok, so I bought these for running with and was a bit worried given other reviews about sound quality. But I was really surprised, they are great. Yes the sound quality is not as good as my over ear headphones, but I bought them for running and it is an excellent product for that. Just run the Southampton 1/2 in them and am really pleased (hence this review). They are very light and fit comfortably around your head a bit like wearing sunglasses backwards. Very secure no risk of falling off or moving around. Able to listen to music whilst still being aware of runners around me. If I had to critique something then I find the volume buttons a little fiddly, the multi function button used to pause, skip tracks answer calls is much easier to use. Wish I had bought a pair years ago instead of struggling with uncomfortable in-ear headphones.

I CANNOT RAVE ABOUT THESE ENOUGH!!!
These headphones are unbelievable. The fact that you’re still aware of what goes on around you is a vital safety element. I believe all headphones should have this feature, it’s a must. The sound quality is excellent and calls great. I cannot rave about these enough!!!

    These are great.
Bought to replace existing lightweight over ear headphones I used for running. I had previously tried other brand in-ear buds, but found that I would hear my feet thudding as I ran. I chose these as they have consistently good reviews and like them because they minimise the risk to long term hearing, sit very comfortably on my head and don’t cause any pressure on my ears and push against my glasses.

They are not noise cancelling and are not sold as such but are specifically designed for active wear and in that, they excel.

Fantastic if you hate ear buds!
I find ear buds uncomfortable and they pop out of my ears too easily. (I think they are designed by men, for men!) These are perfect as they fit above the ear not in it. For me, the sound quality is excellent. Since wearing them I’ve “sold” a pair to two friends. Use them when out exercising and for general everyday wear.

  22. Anonymous says:

     United Kingdom

Not perfect but I like them
I think this is all about expectations. The sound quality is not as good as proper cans, but then no one should be expecting that really. It’s comparable to an average set of in-ear headphones in my mind.

If you crank the volume on your phone/watch/other device AND the headphones (I struggled to get a decent volume initially), then it can get pretty loud, but you have to put up with it noticeably buzzing against your skin at high levels – you can really feel the vibrations which I don’t like.

Where you place the contact points also has a big effect on the volume and bass/mid/treble level you hear. There’s not really any guidance that I could find for this. I looked at a number of their marketing pictures but found that, certainly for music while running/riding, I needed to have them much closer to the tragus (had to Google that to find the correct name…) than most of their images show.

Once the volume is cranked up as I would have it for exercise, then my ability to pick up external sounds like cars coming, is little better than with my cans on until the noise is very close. The sound really fills your head. As a car goes past then it’s actually worse than with the cans on, as I have two full volume sounds at once, so I can’t hear the music properly. There’s probably nothing AfterShokz can really do about this as I guess it’s just down to my brain getting an auditory overload, like trying to listen to 5 people speak at once – it’ll probably affect some people more than others.

For non-exercise activities like calls, listening to audio books etc. positioning seems a bit easier, and I have found them particularly good for this. The mic seems good as well based on my colleagues feedback. I can also hear external sounds absolutely fine, whether it’s my wife calling from upstairs or the doorbell going.

In terms of comfort it’s definitely better than any in-ear headphones I’ve owned. No better or worse than my cans, as they are already very comfortable.

Overall I am happy with them and will continue to use them for exercise and calls.

Great for workout and for public transpo
I really like these headphones. My friend & work colleague showed me hers and let me test them. I loved them so much that I got some for my sister and my nephew. This year, I got some for myself and wish I’d done it earlier. Love that they are outside your ears and no one can hear them but you. You can still be aware of your surroundings. They stay on really well. Granted, I’ve not gone upside-down in them yet such as for yoga or aerial (will update when I do), but they have been great on public transport, cycling, running, walking, grocery shopping. I’m really impressed.

Perfect for those who need to know what is happening around them
I walk 5km every day in the park but was always wary of having head-phones or ear-buds in. Yes, I’m paranoid about walking alone in the park with one of my senses shut off.

These bone conducting headphones are a brilliant solution. I admit I was sceptical before I purchased them, but I put them through their paces over the last couple of days. I can walk round the park listening to podcasts, music, audiobooks and still use my flappy head enhancements (ears) to listen out for the sounds around me.

Added bonus is I don’t have sweaty ears complaining about bits of plastic being stuck in them all day.

    It’s a win win….

Great so long as you appreciate how they work
Bought these for singing practice using a recorded accompaniment. Let’s me hear myself more naturally than closed back and/or noise cancelling headphones. Excellent for that.
Less tiring than traditional headphones in long zoom sessions so long as you’re in a quiet space.
Also good and unobtrusive for cycling, walking, shopping, etc., as you’re aware of your surroundings.
They’re also great at staying in place with or without helmets, sunglasses, face masks, etc.
Obviously, since they don’t cover the ears, the bass is less pronounced and you can hear external sounds. But that’s an inevitable effect of the way they work and – in the latter case – a reason to buy them.
Finally, not a criticism, the supplied pouch is ok but I bought a hard carry case to protect and store them when not in use.

    Out and Abou
Wanted something for walking/running and cycling, sound quality was my biggest worry but needn’t have they are very good for what I listen to, which is audio books or sometimes rock while running etc. They are not hiFi Quality but they are much better than i expected.

Drawbacks I have found – initially felt uncomfortable on my ears but that passed, they do not go as loud as traditional headphones and when turned up loud they do tingle a bit at the sides of your head but you do not notice if you are focussing on something else. While riding fast wind noise can drown out the sound but rather that than not hear the traffic.

Overall very happy, would recommend for sports etc.

I absolutely love my headphones, comfy, light and durable. 2nd pair I have bought in 3 years. Great way of keeping awareness whilst listening to music!
Headphones and running were a combination I never considered, having seen what can happen when runners lose awareness of their surroundings. However, when I was told about bone conducting headphones, and was starring couch to 5k, I wanted to give them a go. I’d heard Aftershokz were the best brand after doing my research and I was not disappointed. Bone conducting headphones give you the ability to listen to music (or whatever you fancy) whilst maintaining an awareness of surroundings. The sound quality is excellent, they’re comfortable to wear and the batteries last ages. Very well recommended!

An excellent addition to my long hill rides
I was recommended these by a friend and they have blown me away by how good they are. I have never ever used ear phones with out and about exercise due to not wanting to lose the ability to hear what was going on around me. I do a lot of hill training and its often dull and I thought music would be a good motivator. Brilliant. I keep them low and can hear music perfectly, except on down hills with the wind rush and most importantly hear cars coming up behind me. They fit well with a cycle helmet and glasses; over a 5 hour ride I had no issues. I wont use these running but I have no doubt you can put the tunes on much louder and still hear what’s going on about you. The battery life has been great; just remember to turn them off. Really impressed by this bit of kit.

    Magic!
A superb solution to “hot” ears! Bought these because I like to wear headphones to listen to audiobooks when doing housework, but find over-ear headsets make my ears hot and I can’t keep earbuds in. These bone conducting earphones are just wonderful. They sit comfortably and securely in place and do not, of course, cover the ears at all. The sound conductance is perfect and I often forget I am wearing them at all.

Indestructible but not the best sound quality
Really good for running. Waterproof and indestructible they really are well suited. Down side is the sound quality is a bit pony. Because it is based on vibration and they don’t go in your ears you get noise leakage from around you. They have got ear plugs supplied but that kinda seems pointless to me. Certainly work for me whilst running though and they do a good job.

Fit great and are fairly clear, they’re not hifi but thats not what they are all about. The issues are really related to the their purpose in that you can hear background noise when wearing them, so if its loud or windy then its hard to hear the headphones, but thats expected. For cycling this would be a problem, but for running with some tunes they’re perfect.

I bought these for running as other headphones I’ve tried usually fall out at some point along a run. These are perfect, they are comfortable and there is no chance of them falling off. Sound quality is great for running, I have no complaints. Battery life is advertised at 6 hours, so far I’ve used them a lot more than that without needing to recharge, this might just be because the battery is very new though. Enjoyable to use
Ordered this in Nov 2020 I’m still amazed at the bone conduction technology, sound is good, great for running as you can hear the traffic noise etc. I run in quite busy areas in London so it’s better for music listening than podcasts as the external noise does ruin the clarity of the sound somewhat but it’s also a benefit to hear other people coming from behind you etc.
Reason I’m reviewing this after 5 months of having it is that I had issues with charging from the start but blamed it on myself not using the original USB-C or perhaps not plugging it in properly, well this culminated in my not being able to charge it at all. I contacted aftershokz and got a replacement delivered within a week with not that much hassle. But makes me think if the charging could be a wider fault with these.

Good for running and hearing urban noise.
Great for running, walking and going to try on my bike as well soon but I ran in busy urban areas and I could hear the music clearly and still hear cars coming and even people talking in the distance. Not a fan of running with earphones that are too tight where you can hear every thud of your feet, I like to still hear what’s going on around me so these are great. Think they could work well in the office as well to listen to your own preferred music, but still hear your colleagues when they try to call you for something. Still hasn’t run out of battery after a couple of runs and a bit of gardening so I believe the estimated times so far. They are comfortable and light so can’t complain about that. It’s not a subwoofer so you won’t get outrageous bass but still good enough to listen to upbeat tunes while running. So far so good. Haven’t used in the rain yet, but it’s had a good amount of sweat on and works fine. Easy to set up and once you can remember the buttons it’s easy to skip songs etc.

    Perfect for what I needed
Bought these for going out running and walking the dog so I can hear what’s round about me. I didn’t buy them for listening to music in the house or commuting if I had to.

For the use I bought them for they are perfect, the sound takes a little bit of getting used to but after a couple of minutes you wouldn’t know you weren’t listening on traditional earphones. Where they blew me away however was with spoken audio such as podcasts and audiobooks, they are that good I wear them if I’m listening to podcasts/audiobooks in the house.

The multifunctional button on the left ear is ideal for quickly pausing/skipping songs, and is missing on a lot of budget earphones.

I haven’t noticed the battery draining or having to charge them frequently which is a bonus, compared to my last wireless earphones (skull candy I think) the battery is far superior.

love em they last about 6 hours of continual use which Is good maybe even a bit longer. I use at work so can listen to podcasts and evening for bike listening to music. audio quality is obviously not as good as head phones but for music on bike rides its great and I can still hear traffic around me really pleased, also the usb cable same as my note 9 so no issue charging

    Great headphones
I love these headphones. I have some much more expensive noise cancelling cans, but I choose these pretty much all the time. They are really comfortable- I can easily forget I am wearing them as there is nothing in or over my ear interfering with normal hearing. The mic quality for calls seems to be good.

When working out, the band at the back can push them out of place when I put my head flat on the floor or a bench, but they don’t ever fall off.

The sound quality is good for what these are – it’s not as good as over ear nc headphones, but is clear, and voices in particular sound really good.

Love these headphones. Simple design and having bone conducting tech is great because it lets you hear your surroundings. They occasionally slip, and can need adjusting with helmet, glasses and cycling hat. Really pleased that it uses usb c to charge.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersNot the best sound quality, but they aren't in your ears don't forget!
I am a bit of an audiophile, but sound quality is not what these are for. I bought them for cycling as I wanted to be able to hear traffic whilst on the road. I’d tried in the ear ones with ‘transparent’ hearing that allows sound into the ear through mics, but when cycling the wind noise was terrible.
These are a whole different concept – the music sound is conducted through your cheekbones near your ear. I’ve tried them when cycling and they do the job really well. You can hear the music most of the time and still hear the traffic. The only issue is when you are in really loud traffic but this is not a major issue. Sound quality is just OK, but when conducting through bones it’s never going to be amazing. Overall I’m very happy with these for my trips on the bike.

    Makes running much safe
I’m a runner. Not hearing approaching bikes and vehicles from behind is always a problem with in-ear headphones. These solve that problem.

    They work with tv.
I use this for listening to my Bluetooth tv, they are great , don’t get as hot as with the big earphones with the pads on them, don’t know how long they will last with the tv as I had a cheaper set before and they worked with a different tv for a while then stopped working on the tv but still work on other items.

    Does exactly what I need
These are exactly what I wanted.

Let’s you listen to music whilst out for a run whilst also giving you a chance to hear the bike coming up behind you at a million miles an hour (if they’re kind enough to say anything that is…)

I’ve worn them regularly for a couple of months and no issues with comfort, battery life is incredible and the sound quality is perfectly fine. Okay it’s not as good as AirPods but it’s more than sufficient for what I need.

Great headphones - does exactly what it says on the can.
I have had this now about 5 weeks and use it regularly to listen to e-books while cycling, running or hiking. It performs great in [relatively] quiet environments. This is a bone conduction headphone to keep your ears open to the surrounding environment – that it does well! So no surprises that if wind noise (while cycling fast) or loud traffic noise creeps in, then I struggle to hear clearly. After a while you get the hang of it and learn how to get the best out of this headphone. Does exactly what it says on the can. Recommended.

    Would highly recommend

Golden Review Award: 31 From Our UsersI had read the reviews but wasn't entirely sure....
So I only write reviews when products are at either end of the spectrum – great or rubbish.

I bought these both for running, sessions on my turbo trainer and out on the road on the bike. Earphones that don’t go in your ears – yeah right but I read the reviews and watched the videos and went for it.

I am so glad I did – these are brilliant. They pair instantly, fit both for running and with a cycle helmet and the sound quality is more than good enough for when you are exercising in particular. Sure if you are flying down a hill at breakneck speed with the wind in your rears they are a bit quiet but I have to turn the volume quite some way below full when out on the bike to ensure I can get the balance right of hearing the music/podcasts as well as the traffic – and its this they are particularly great at. I do not believe its right to be riding with earphones in (or running for that matter) and did use an old set of earphones with one earplug cut off which sort of worked but these are so much better.

Thanks guys – I love these.

I purchased these about 4-months ago and use during indoor workouts and while our cycling (road and mountain biking) absolutely fantastic and can’t recommend highly enough.

Audio quality is good while out on the road and allows you to still hear your surroundings. I’ve also taken a few calls while out on my bike which is good quality for short calls. Everything stays in place

Can be somewhat weird to get used to, and was slightly apprehensive initially as I am someone who runs with something in ear. But honestly after 5 minutes you get really used to it. Sound quality Ofcourse drops a bit but for running and keeping awareness around you, it’s great!

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersLiberating!
First of all, they’re super, super light, and fairly small/unobtrusive (photo attached); I wear my glasses at all times, headphones typically cause my lenses to move around and give me a headache and I’ve never been able to wear earbuds as they either don’t fit or cause discomfort after a short period. These are a total revelation, they don’t move my glasses at all – both get along well even when walking at pace or jogging. The sound quality is decent, as other reviewers have said they’ll never be audiophile levels of sound quality but it’s perfectly enjoyable, great volume range (typically slightly below 1/3 volume works best for me), I can hear traffic, people etc no problem at all. The best comparison I can think of is carrying on a conversation while half watching a TV program, you can give the attention you need/want to the music while giving enough attention to your surroundings to ensure safety at all times.

    Great for outdoors
This is my first pair of bone conduction headphones and I was a bit sceptical about them but I needn’t have been, they are excellent. I mainly use them for hiking and the sound quality and volume are excellent and I love that I can still hear my surroundings. When there’s a lot of external noise, such as walking along a busy road, you can’t hear the headphones unless you put in the supplied earplugs, but even plugging just one ear works well.

    Great running headphones.
I’m pleasantly surprised at how well these work as headphones to use while running. The sound quality is much better than I’d expected – not super wonderful hi-fi quality, but still a good soundstage (sense of spatial separation of instruments), clear mids and highs, and very decent volume – I use these at a 50% volume on my iPhone. They stay well attached to my head – no fretting about losing them, and, of course, as they work by bone conduction, your ears are unobstructed so you can hear all around you – important for keeping safe. I being to wonder how good the more expensive ones are – might be worth a try one day.

I liked the sound and the fact they do not cover my ears as I wear hearing aids . Slight problem when out in the cold as when i put my beanie on it pushes the earphone out of position and it takes a bit of fiddling to get the position right. Other than that I find them ideal for me.

Good compromise for hearing surroundings whilst listening to audio
Like everyone new to bone-conducting headsets, it was an unknown step but I definitely prefer not sticking buds into ears. The sound is fine for Zoom and phone calls – could be louder especially for calls, when outside with other ambient noise. Reasonably comfortable for couple of hours and you soon get used to the tickly effect. The flat profile means it’s much easier to wipe clean v buds. Battery charges quickly and for several hours in use and holds charge for days if not used.

    Good product with a nuance!
Great concept, sound quality is good once you adjust to the fact you can hear other external sound. Kind of the benefit and a downside! Battery life is ok but only a few days usage so far.
Fit is great except if you wear glasses or ears are slightly larger. Because the battery is higher than the other models, you get some push out and rubbing on the top of the ears. Probably depends on type of glasses.
Overall I’m happy with them and the concept is excellent. May safe for the more expensive model with the battery in a different position.

Voice sounds great, sometimes it is a little odd like someone is standing right next to you. Makes content that is just talking very immersive.
Comfortable enough to wear for long periods and with glasses
USB C charging is great as I always have that cable to hand

    Cons
Any low end is lost without using the earplugs that are supplied
The size of the head band means that it makes my ears poke out a little which is not the look I was going for.
No auto off is absolutely terrible, I wish they would turn off after an hour of not being connected to anything. Such a waste of battery.

This is a replacement for Trekz Titanium that I accidentally crushed, but they had been amazing for three years. These are as good, lighter with less vibration. I bought them for cycling but I’ve always used them mainly for phone calls. The call quality is amazing and they’re great for driving hands-free. I talk for hours on the phone and I wouldn’t want to hold a hot phone to my head for that long or wear ear buds. I’m going to be a lifelong customer!

Golden Review Award: 37 From Our UsersComfortable for my runs
I bought these headphones so I could still hear traffic and cyclists on my runs. The sound quality is surprisingly good, much better than I’d expected with both music and podcasts clear and more than loud enough, without me going anywhere near as loud as they can go. I can now listen to them and still hear cyclists coming behind me in plenty of time. I’ll be using these year round but I’m most looking forward to using them over the winter where I’ll be out in the dark more and it’ll be even more important to be able to hear what’s going on.

On my first run I was aware of my ponytail hitting against the band at the back, as it does sit out away from the head (like you see in the images), but after that first run I haven’t noticed it at all, so I guess I’ve got used to it quickly. Even on the first run where I was aware of it it was still far less annoying than my old headphones where the connecting wire always seemed to be about to pull the earbuds out of my ears!

I’ve added a photo of the earphones along with my kindle to give an idea of the actual size – they’re quite a bit smaller than I expected so don’t sit as far off the head as I’d worried they might. 🙂

Another reviewer mentioned the beeps being very loud, but I haven’t noticed this. Maybe a case of getting the right volume mix between the phone volume options and headphones?
