So, bought 3 gates with varying % discounts and discount voucher values.

Got a quote from a chippy to put a 6 foot wooden gate and fence spanning a 7 foot gap. Well 600 was not in my budget.

So plan B. Buy 2 gates, use one as an actual gate and the other as a ‘fence’ and ask ex hubby to help me install in exchange for 3rd gate

Gates were a little bit less than perfect but put together ok (but for a couple of tight fitting holes that needed an extra bit if drilling).

We decided (well, I decided) to put supporting post in first with gate actually attached. Dug both holes to about 12 inches deep, then half filled supporting post hole with water around post and poured in half bag postcrete. Tamped down with a stick to get air bubbles out and used spirit level for horizontal and vertical. Wobbled post gently accordingly and held gate and post until postcrete set. About 3 minutes.

Did same to other post BUT firmly bungeed gate to post so latch and lock lined up before concreting in.

Mostly a success. The lock needs a slight wiggle to lock and the posts have a teeny bit of give. The ‘gate as a fence’ worked ok too but for a few installation problems caused by us.

If you are precious about keeping the gate pristine I suggest you put down a soft blanket – we managed to drop and scuff the gates a couple of times as they are big, heavy and rather difficult to handle whilst also pouring concrete, measuring etc. – even with two pairs of ‘there’s a reason we are divoced’ hands lol!

Covered the 7 foot span for about 150 in total. Saved 450 to go towards garden renovations.
