I was looking for a replacement keyboard for my over 20 year old Evolution Music Creator 49. The Evolution keyboard used midi to connect to a computer and came with a great software package. However it came with a lead that powered it through the computer’s games port (remember those?). When used with an external power supply it has always been a bit flaky with odd things going on from time to time. Also the most recent version of Windows that I can get the software to run on is Windows XP. So I thought it was time to get something a bit more up to date.
After reading the reviews and considering prices I decided on the Axus AXP2L as on paper it had all the features I was looking for. However when I started using it it became apparent that the on board instruments are on the whole no where near as good as the general midi ones I had been using with the Evolution keyboard. Many have an unpleasant harshness to them and only have a vague resemblance to the instrument they are supposed to be. The organs are particularly disappointing, which surprises me considering that this is a keyboard. Also the rhythms seem mainly aimed at dance music being somewhat upbeat and cluttered. However there are a few instruments and rhythm combinations that I find work well with the tunes I am playing.
You may wonder why I gave 4 stars having read that. This keyboard comes with a built in midi connection and a line in jack. I have used these to connect to my Windows XP netbook and external Soundblaster sound card and the whole thing works beautifully. I can use the Evolution software along with the much better sounding instruments and rhythms that were included. Feeding the output back into the Axus keyboard’s speakers shows what great speakers they are. The poor sound of some of the built in instruments is certainly not due to the speaker system. So I am happy with the keyboard as it enables me to continue using the Evolution software that has given me so much pleasure over the years without any hitches. On top of this I can benefit from the few built-in instrument and rhythm combinations that I think work better than the Evolution ones.
I have limited experience with these types of keyboards, but i thought for the money it seemed quite good value. It look good and feels a reasonable quality. I wanted a KB with weighted keys and this had them and they work well. Not many complaints really except a couple. When using the organ function, the middle and higher registers are very good, but the lower ones, below middle C sound like someones last dying breath which is a shame! I found the stand and stool difficult to get me at the correct height, but two pieces of 3×2 sorted that out. The instruction booklet that came with it is a bit basic. It tells you what things are but not how to use them. Youtube filled in all the missing details. All in all though, quite happy with it.
The description is a little misleading, the full description says ”A pair of stereo headphones are already supplied in the box,” but under this is does say that ”Box Contains: AXP2 Keyboard. Power adaptor ”. If you click on the kit version it then says that it contains the stand, seat and headphones. It is a little bit confusing.
That aside, it seems pretty good for what you get, it’s pretty big lots of different things you can do, lots of buttons which seem self explanatory.
Hubby seems to be having a great time on it so far.
Fantastic keyboard for the great price and large size! everything you need and more very very happy I recommend highly
Very good, enjoy the song that light up helping you to play the song..
I was very happy to receive this electronic keyboard. I am a complete beginner and I thought I would enjoy pootling around with a piano, perhaps teach myself a tune or two. I’ve seen other reviews saying this keyboard isn’t much good, and I’m sure in their expert opinion they are correct. However, as a casual not-very-musical person, I’ve had a lot of fun playing about with this instrument. It’s quite lightweight and comes with headphones and music rest. The sound is loud and clear (to my uneducated ear). The usage instructions are easy to understand. I would suggest purchasing this if you’re not ready to make a bigger investment with a well – known brand. The only thing I think it would have been better with is if it had come with a sheet of absolute beginner lessons.
My son has decided to teach himself piano via online videos so we were delighted to find hm a reasonably priced keyboard to practice on.
This has everything he needs – a great range of sounds and rhythms plus a nice sounding piano keyboard.
It is light so easy to move about, and best of all are the headphones so we don’t have to continually hear the same tune over and over and over and over……..
Highly recommended
At the price point this keyboard is beyond the toy ones available but then you do get a lot more features and especially welcome is the inclusion of some headphones – a relief for us parents.
I’ve seen other reviews that say this isn’t a good keyboard for if the person wants to take music seriously but if the person isn’t sure and you want to show them what keyboards can be to me this seems an ideal compromise on price vs quality.
There is way more features than most younger children would ever use but its certainly keeping our girls entertained bashing away on the keys.
Bought for my 9 year old daughter, she loves it. After having for a few days the seller contacted me to inform of a defect with that make regarding the speakers. They said if ours was one of the defected items they would replace or refund. They were really quick to replace the item and the customer service was excellent.
