Good entry level keyboard let down by its built in instruments and rhythms
I was looking for a replacement keyboard for my over 20 year old Evolution Music Creator 49. The Evolution keyboard used midi to connect to a computer and came with a great software package. However it came with a lead that powered it through the computer’s games port (remember those?). When used with an external power supply it has always been a bit flaky with odd things going on from time to time. Also the most recent version of Windows that I can get the software to run on is Windows XP. So I thought it was time to get something a bit more up to date.
After reading the reviews and considering prices I decided on the Axus AXP2L as on paper it had all the features I was looking for. However when I started using it it became apparent that the on board instruments are on the whole no where near as good as the general midi ones I had been using with the Evolution keyboard. Many have an unpleasant harshness to them and only have a vague resemblance to the instrument they are supposed to be. The organs are particularly disappointing, which surprises me considering that this is a keyboard. Also the rhythms seem mainly aimed at dance music being somewhat upbeat and cluttered. However there are a few instruments and rhythm combinations that I find work well with the tunes I am playing.
You may wonder why I gave 4 stars having read that. This keyboard comes with a built in midi connection and a line in jack. I have used these to connect to my Windows XP netbook and external Soundblaster sound card and the whole thing works beautifully. I can use the Evolution software along with the much better sounding instruments and rhythms that were included. Feeding the output back into the Axus keyboard’s speakers shows what great speakers they are. The poor sound of some of the built in instruments is certainly not due to the speaker system. So I am happy with the keyboard as it enables me to continue using the Evolution software that has given me so much pleasure over the years without any hitches. On top of this I can benefit from the few built-in instrument and rhythm combinations that I think work better than the Evolution ones.
Reasonable value for money
I have limited experience with these types of keyboards, but i thought for the money it seemed quite good value. It look good and feels a reasonable quality. I wanted a KB with weighted keys and this had them and they work well. Not many complaints really except a couple. When using the organ function, the middle and higher registers are very good, but the lower ones, below middle C sound like someones last dying breath which is a shame! I found the stand and stool difficult to get me at the correct height, but two pieces of 3×2 sorted that out. The instruction booklet that came with it is a bit basic. It tells you what things are but not how to use them. Youtube filled in all the missing details. All in all though, quite happy with it.
it is the first one for our 7y old, and she is very happy.
it was easy to put it together and everyone in the house use it.
having headphones with it, really helps to avoid headaches for the rest of the house and the neighbors.
The description is a little misleading, the full description says ”A pair of stereo headphones are already supplied in the box,” but under this is does say that ”Box Contains: AXP2 Keyboard. Power adaptor ”. If you click on the kit version it then says that it contains the stand, seat and headphones. It is a little bit confusing.
That aside, it seems pretty good for what you get, it’s pretty big lots of different things you can do, lots of buttons which seem self explanatory.
Hubby seems to be having a great time on it so far.
Easy play keyboard
Bought as a replacement for a very old keyboard which died! Like the feel of the keys, good selection of “voices” , rhythms and percussion sounds. Good little “instruction” booklet making it simple to start playing straight away.
Fantastic keyboard highly recommended
Fantastic keyboard for the great price and large size! everything you need and more very very happy I recommend highly
Easy peesy piano playing.
Very good, enjoy the song that light up helping you to play the song..
I was very happy to receive this electronic keyboard. I am a complete beginner and I thought I would enjoy pootling around with a piano, perhaps teach myself a tune or two. I’ve seen other reviews saying this keyboard isn’t much good, and I’m sure in their expert opinion they are correct. However, as a casual not-very-musical person, I’ve had a lot of fun playing about with this instrument. It’s quite lightweight and comes with headphones and music rest. The sound is loud and clear (to my uneducated ear). The usage instructions are easy to understand. I would suggest purchasing this if you’re not ready to make a bigger investment with a well – known brand. The only thing I think it would have been better with is if it had come with a sheet of absolute beginner lessons.
Piano
My son has decided to teach himself piano via online videos so we were delighted to find hm a reasonably priced keyboard to practice on.
This has everything he needs – a great range of sounds and rhythms plus a nice sounding piano keyboard.
It is light so easy to move about, and best of all are the headphones so we don’t have to continually hear the same tune over and over and over and over……..
Highly recommended
At the price point this keyboard is beyond the toy ones available but then you do get a lot more features and especially welcome is the inclusion of some headphones – a relief for us parents.
I’ve seen other reviews that say this isn’t a good keyboard for if the person wants to take music seriously but if the person isn’t sure and you want to show them what keyboards can be to me this seems an ideal compromise on price vs quality.
There is way more features than most younger children would ever use but its certainly keeping our girls entertained bashing away on the keys.
Bought for my 9 year old daughter, she loves it. After having for a few days the seller contacted me to inform of a defect with that make regarding the speakers. They said if ours was one of the defected items they would replace or refund. They were really quick to replace the item and the customer service was excellent.
Little disappointed that it doesn't go quite as low as I ...
Really impressed with this keyboard for the money!!
It does everything I wanted and more. Little disappointed that it doesn’t go quite as low as I expected but it has enough notes for me to learn with
I know for sure she will be delighted with i
Have bought this item for my daughter for Christmas, have only just been able to try it as she is at school, and have to say it’s brill! If I didn’t have loads to do would have been on it all afternoon. I know for sure she will be delighted with it. Really good item, sounds good, of course I am no professional, she is 11 years old and will be over the moon with it. It is a bit plastic looking, but still sounds good!
Buy this
I cannot believe that this is this cheap. Perfect for a (little) beginner to learn piano or keyboard with 66 full-size keys, some touch sensitivity and pretty good sounds and as the teacher said, should take her to the next stage when biugger bucks will be required. Unhesitatingly recommend it.
he sound is great, she already created her own music
I bought the key board for my 10 years old daughter. she just started piano lesson. she loves it. the sound is great, she already created her own music. I recommend it.the delivery very quick and it was just before Christmas.
Great keyboard
This was a keyboard for my daughter’s birthday.
The other reviews are correct – it is well made, has the touch sensitivity, enough tones and voices to sink a battleship, for a very good price. As a bonus, also arrived on time.
Great sound at a good price
Real good value and excellent sound. Used by my son as his first entry into the keyboard world. OK, it is not a full size piano keyboard but for the price paid (during an Amazon lightning deal) we are really happy with the build and sound quality of it. Lots of features available, most of which we are yet to explore. Really good!
Eva: My dad got this for me because he wants me to be able to play for fun. I love it and it is really easy to play. I think the different voices are fantastic and super-cool. The touch sensitive keyboard makes it a pleasure to play, and the headphone plug allows you to play without disturbing other people.
Dad: This was the least expensive 61 key, touch sensitive keyboard I could find to replace the daughter’s tiny accordion. She has made significant progress since graduating to this instrument. The keyboard quality seems good and the keys are full-size. The case, however, is large and on the plastic side. There is a slight hum in the audio. The touch sensitive key feature is worth the substantial premium, but doesn’t give the same precise volume control as a piano or accordion. Seems good value but I’m not sure I would have rated it as high as she has.
My 7 year old has just started learning the piano it is great. We all enjoy the different tracks on it too we have it in our open plan living area so it gets used a lot. Our 5 year old and 11 month old also love to have a go on it!
wow Blown away by this keyboard, bough for my son to practice on, the sound is amazing and the touch sensative keys enable him to play as if on a real piano. great for the price. would recomend to anyone
Bought this for my daughter for Christmas. So far very impressed. She loves it and the touch sensitive keys are a must.
My only complaint is the fact that it took nearly one month to reach me, only just in time for Christmas. Norman Musical were helpful but took three phone calls and numerous email to get it resolved.
I bought this keyboard to practice for my piano lessons at home, but was extremely surprised at the quality of instrument I got. Firstly the sound was great, especially for the price, the sound was something I would expect on a more expensive model. Also the touch response keys are great as I can vary how loud I play, even my teacher was impressed by them.
It is really easy to use and is really good value for money.
