The Behringer USB audio interface made recording my four drum tracks so much easier than the mixer I was using. With four inputs and four outputs it gave the sound guy more to mix and work with. And it was easier to set levels and compensate for any clipping by using the pad button.

Within two minutes of unboxing, I was DJing on my Linux system while in music heaven. I finally have that studio sound, my amplifier doesn’t need to be cranked up anymore!

Everyone else has mentioned the excellent build quality. It had some nice weight to it. The power socket is a little fiddly to put together, but it’s well-built.

I can’t wait to plug my guitars & midi keyboard in.

This is the perfect solution to Covid19, stay in while enjoying great music in studio quality.

I love everything about this. There were a lot of reviews on this on youtube, and value for money was the standout feature.

But I have been a Behringer owner for a long time and all of their stuff that I have from them so far has been excellent.

EDIT: Note the XLR outputs on this are low. If you are using this live then you will need to run it through a preamp or out to a desk.

Works seamlessly and integrates well with logic on a mac pro, sound quality is much better than I was expecting, I prefer it to my Saffire pro 26! It’s also sturdy… Good selection of inputs… Very good product, especially when you consider the price.

Linux plays nice with it. No drivers or hacking necessary. Thanks to it being class compliant. Good companion to Ardour. XLR outputs are a plus, as well as inserts. Comes with a power supply of unknown quality, but the noise floor is acceptably low. Under Linux it seems to produce the fewest Xruns at 48khz but is almost as stable at 192khz. Bit depth confirmed at 24bit. As far as it’s sound I would say mostly revealing but with some smoothing.. just a wee bit. In this instance you don’t want smoothing, you want clinical accuracy. MIDI functionality works well and with some configuring in Ardour for the midi interface and appropriate tracks/busses can play back and capture simultaneously. Works nicely with an old Yamaha PSR-282. I’m sure control surfaces would work equally well with the proper configurations. It is a Behringer product so I don’t expect it to live forever. Corners are cut to bring the cost down. Don’t bash it about and it should last. Connectors are nice and tight and pots sound clean.

I’m not an audiophile but this does exactly what I need at a fraction of the price of the other products. It’s a sturdy build and has been working great for almost a year now. I guess you could say it’s a bit clunky but honestly, there’s 4 XLR inputs so I’d imagine there’s a lot to cram in.

Windows 10 is still a pain to install things. I installed the driver first, turned it on and nothing; no sound. Uninstalled the driver and it worked. Why? Windows 10 installed the most appropriate driver itself. Now installed the ASIO driver supplied by Behringer and it works perfectly except with ProTools. I have no idea why but it works with Reason 5 onwards, Cubase, Studio One, Tractor Pro 3 etc..
4 inputs, outputs, loads of connections on the rear and really good value for the price. There is room for growth at a later stage. All metal construction is better than plastic on similar units.
I got it to replace my trusty E-Mu 1616m which finally gave up the ghost. USB is more convenient than installing cards into a PC. Interchangeable with a Mac is a bonus. It is USB 2 but 3 sockets are compatible. I decided against the newer C socket mainly on price as I don’t have a small fortune to spend on equipment.
Overall I’m very happy with unit and thoroughly recommend i

Very nice interface, no noise as far as I can hear, no latency, strong build and slick design. Only thing I would say is that it can be a bit difficult to get XLR Leads in and out to start with but it soon loosens up.

Bought this as my old little 2 channel wasn’t performing well anymore, was looking around and saw much more expensive alternatives offering the exact same spec so decided to give it a go. No hesitation recommending this device at all, folks save your money paying for bigger well known brands at more than double the cost, it simply isn’t worth it, buy a vst with the money you save 🙂
My only gripe is Windows 10 the volume is extremely low, however this is a windows problem and nothing to do with the device, I have to turn the output knob down half way when using it on the mac.

Brilliant value for money. I haven’t starred the tech support because I’ve never needed to use i

This is excellent value for money. To my ears, it provides as good quality as interface units from other manufacturers costing more than twice the price. I think that the lower price is purely because Behringer has a “bargain basement” reputation and previous versions of their interfaces did not quite achieve this audio quality.

Note that, for connection to an iPad (using the excellent Auria Pro app, in my case), you have to invest in a genuine Apple USB3 interface. The cheaper, non-branded USB converter that I got via Amazon was not fully compatible.

I was looking for a replacement for an old mixer that I’d been using for my guitar and keyboard, and this offered midi as well, so I thought I’d give it a try. I have to say that it’s amazing value, and the audio quality sounds spot-on to my ears. It has also allowed me to ditch my old midi-USB adapter, so there’s one less box cluttering up the room. I’m using it with Reaper on a PC, and this gives superb latency-free audio with the ASIO driver. A really good option if your looking for a USB audio interface with midi on a budge

After my trusty but old 1616m died I needed a new interface and this offered a good bang for buck. The unit is well made and I was pleased with the quality.

However, it often seems to ‘max out’ if too many notes play at once. Everything grinds to a halt. Of course I can increase the buffer settings (in a very very basic app) but even so the latency is then an issue and still the unit can struggle.

In essence, is a great budget friendly addition but not for people using heavy vst reliant tracks

  32. Charity says:

Its a brilliant unit for recording and mine has had plenty of use when I record music, but for standard windows output (i.e. not from a DAW) the drivers just cant manage to maintain sound. Behringers drivers are shockingly unstable and I’m convinced its to do with the bitrate of the output as resetting the bitrate will sometimes resurrect the audio playback from windows.

I havent had any issues using it purely as a dedicated audio interface with Reaper, and I ended up using the onboard audio adapter on my computer with a 3.5mm stereo to phono cable and plugged them into the 2nd input on my monitor speakers. It does mean that you have to set up your DAW to work just with the UMD as its dedicated audio device, but thats a minor niggle really…

For the price, this thing blows away a lot of other audio interfaces. 24bit 192khz recording is easily achievable on just the USB connection and if youre recording from a Mic or an instrument, the Midas preamps are a very nice inclusion. I havent had an opportunity to use the midi ports yet but for recording instruments or podcasting, you really couldnt ask for a better unit, however until the driver situation is fixed, i wouldnt attempt to use it for livestreaming unless youre streaming the audio from a different sound device and use this as an input only. Shame, as with a little attention to detail (and some proper windows drivers) this could be an amazing card for pro gaming and live mixing as well.

I’ve played for over 40 years but never recorded myself. Playing multiple keyboards I wanted as many inputs as possible for the money and this does the job.
Having 4 inputs means I can record 2 keyboards in stereo or 4 different boards at once and mix them together.
I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to use it without technical help bit whereas it’s not exactly plug and play it’s near enough.

Can’t fault this for the money, in my opinion it blows all similarly priced Interfaces out of the water, if only due to the four inputs alone, but there is MORE check the spec.
    GREAT!
Note, you may have to download the FREE driver from the Behringer site to get it to work with your recording software, and DON’T forget to ‘run’ the driver. You can’t just download it, you have to ‘run’ it. (When I downloaded the driver the device worked on my PC but was not recognised by Cubase which confused me for a while.)
I am very happy with this, much better in every way than my other well known branded device that only had two inputs…and cost the same. There is a cool function that splits the playback between the software and input, bottom line, on Cubase you don’t have to click and un-click a track to hear it or not.

has more options for connecting to things than you would prolly ever need. RCA outs not effected by master out vol.

no option to switch to +4 instead of -10db.

still behringer stepped it up .. bought the bigger version for my other studio, great value .. hope it works for the long term (unlike ie. native instruments hardware etc .. why i no longer invest in expensive computer / audio interfaces, its the same as “buying” (aka renting) software .. its only going to last for x years before its obsolete .. sucks having a stack of perfectly good hardware interfaces that are no longer supported because its not “profitable” for these corporations)

.. ideally the behringer stuff would work as a mixer if powered but not connected to a laptop (since the VUs light up, its clearly receiving signal, just doesnt send it to my monitors) .. would make it a better investme

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI was very happy with this unit until a minor accident caused the headphone jack to break. The jack is mounted directly on the main circuit card with no support from the front panel. Pressure on the input plug caused it to break rendering the headphone output unusable. Otherwise this unit seems sturdy. Too bad for me they skimped on this one part. Also the manual is of no help when it come to getting things set up. Despite these issues, I am buying another one to replace this one. I will be more careful with the headphone jack (and anything else) in the future.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersThis is a great unit. Can’t believe the quality at this price. Built sturdy, nice features, the midas-designed preamps sound great! Was leaning towards the equivalent 4 channel focusrite scarlett (based on the quality of the 2 ch scarlett I own), then I found the umc404hd with pretty much the same features…..for $200 less. I admit, I was sceptical at first, based on the low price and behringers position in the ‘budget gear’ market, but after testing this unit out thoroughly (with a variety of different sources), I honestly can’t say the preamps in my focusrite sound that much ‘better’ to my ears, if at all. Certainly not $200 better in this case (lets face it, the majority of us musicians aren’t rich). It used to be that behringer was known for cheap, low-end gear, if you were really serious about your home studio, you’d spend the extra money to buy a ‘better brand’, but quite honestly the last few years it seems they’ve stepped up their game, putting out much better quality gear, and its all quite affordable, a great value. The umc404hd is every bit worth it, and compares to interfaces that cost ALOT more. Don’t be a gear snob. Try it out.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought this to replace a Behringer 1204USB as I needed additional inputs for simultaneous recording of Roland VDrums, Yamaha (midi) keyboard, and guitars. Latency is incredibly low, comparable to the 1204USB which I managed to reduce to around 8ms round trip.

Running keyboard through midi interface and listening to patches with live monitoring yields around 8ms of round trip latency, which is perfect for my requirements. I’m very sensitive to latency, and this is unnoticeable, even for fast pieces.

Drivers are excellent, build quality solid. Can’t think of much more I need from this device, and the price is unbeatable.

Fab interface, excellent value for money. 4 inputs for less than some manufacturers charge for 2. Produces lovely sounds from a variety of sources. The only problem I had was with my software (Audacity) which was compensating for non-existent latency, resulting in overdubbed parts running ahead of the original track. If you are experiencing problems check your settings first – there is likely nothing wrong with the unit.
    EDIT August 2020:
It’s still the core of my studio. Any problems I had have been user error rather than the interface. I’ve used it for recording both at home and outside on location (3 mics and a guitar plugged in, phantom power on, and happily running on USB power from the laptop) and also for a weekly live stream for the past 5 months, and it never misses a beat. It’s about to be replaced with a Soundcraft mixer as I need more inputs, but I’ll be keeping it as a portable rig and for MIDI recording.

Nice device and works perfectly with our Mac and Adobe Audition. We’re able to record four separate microphones on four separate channels and that’s exactly what we wanted.

This unit is great. I was rather hoping to use this as a 4-ch recorder with audacity, but it shows up as two separate USB devices, and audacity only records one USB device at a time. Still, a very good unit.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersHallo,

4 Simultaneous mono inputs or 2 stereo inputs or any combination of those out to multiple DAW programs. For 84 you couldn’t find a better deal. This device does everything I wanted it to and more, and sounds great while doing it, all with no latency issues. Don’t miss out on this at such a bargain price. Buy it, you won’t regret it.

This is a simply amazing bit of kit at this price. Behringer tend to get some stick but this is sturdily constructed, bristling with inputs and outputs and it sounds just lovely, particularly when you compare it to those motherboard audio connections we all take for granted these days. It even has a MIDI in and out! It’s a metal case and all the connectors, knobs and switches feel solid.

Installation was simple using the drivers from Behringer’s website (Windows 7 tried to install it on its own but failed). Documentation is rather sparse as is sadly routine nowadays but the unit is pretty self-explanatory anyway. If you’re buying this kind of interface you know what you’re expecting it to do, and it does that. The latest drivers are stable and solid.

A professional sounding (and looking) unit. Heartily recommended.

Golden Review Award: 55 From Our UsersThis is a fantastic USB soundcard. It supports 4 simultaneous inputs and outputs, with 4 mic preamps featuring 48V phantom power. It also has MIDI in and out, a headphone socket, and control knobs to control input gain and output levels.

The inputs are available on both balanced XLR and balanced line input sockets. Outputs 1 and 2 are available on balanced XLR, balanced line, and unbalanced RCA phono. Outputs 3 and 4 are available on unbalanced line and unbalanced RCA phono connections. All four channels also feature mono insert returns, allowing for use of external hardware effects.

Controls are as follows: four input gain knobs, one per channel, as well as a button to switch between mic level and line level input signals. On the output side, there’s a single knob to control the level of outputs 1 and 2, another for the Phones output, and a Mix knob. This knob controls the hardware mixing between input and playback levels – if turned towards the left, any signals coming into the inputs will be sent to the main outputs 1 & 2. This allows monitoring of any inputs alongside anything being played back, allowing you to record one or more instruments or vocals while listening to previously recorded tracks. This is done entirely in hardware with zero latency and not requiring any software setup. If you’d prefer to keep the input signals out of the playback, turn this knob all the way to the right, marked “PB” for Playback.

Four buttons are also provided to independently pad each input channel. Finally there’s a button that controls the Phones output, configuring whether it is monitoring outputs 1&2 or outputs 3&4. This allows for A/B switching between two mixes, if you set up the outputs appropriately in software.

The device connects to your computer via standard USB 2 cable. It is provided with a small DC power supply, enabling use of the device without an active USB connection. The power supply can be used in addition to the USB connection to ensure a clean, noiseless power feed.

On Mac it will be detected immediately, on Windows you need to download drivers from the Behringer website. These drivers include both standard Windows audio and ASIO support, and installs a systray icon which activates a control panel. This control panel allows changing buffer settings, bitrate, sample rate, and so on.

I have used the device in both Windows 10 and macOS High Sierra, using Adobe Audition, Sony Sound Forge and other audio apps. All apps will see four inputs and four outputs, and each can be used independently in a multi-track project. You can be recording to four new tracks while simultaneously playing back four already recorded tracks.

Thanks to the four mic pre-amps, you can record up to four microphones directly into the sound card. Optional 48V phantom power means it can work with condenser mics and any other that need power supplied. It is therefore an extremely handy device to take on the road, allowing you to record and play back with only this soundcard and a computer or laptop, no mixer required. You can control the gain of each input independently. Playback settings are more limited in hardware – you can only control the volume of outputs 1 and 2. Control of outputs 3 and 4 needs to be done in software.

Audio quality is excellent. The device supports full 24bit / 192khz in both recording and playback. I am no expert sound engineer, but I have made recordings direct into the device from a couple of Behringer condenser microphones, and I have used it for playing back up to four channels simultaneously in live theatre productions. In all cases it sounded great, with no noticeable noise, hum or distortion.

This is a really excellent and flexible sound card. It has enough inputs and outputs to cover a variety of requirements, yet is still small and portable enough to be thrown in a bag and taken anywhere it’s needed. As mentioned I’ve used it to record from a couple of condenser microphones, and also to provide the music and sound effects for several theatre productions.

In addition I’m also now using it as my main PC sound card. Because it has four outputs, I can use it for basic quadraphonic surround sound – there’s a setting for 4.0 surround in Windows and macOS sound preferences. Connected to a decent amplifier and speakers it provides really superb audio quality for music and watching movies.

Highly recommended for anyone who needs top quality recording and playback of up to four in and four out. I think it’s excellent value for the money considering everything it can do.

A fantastic, affordable USB soundcard with simultaneous 4 in/4 out, mic preamps and plenty of control options.Highly recommended

Just tried it with my PC. It has almost no latency (sound from the speakers comes exactly when I strum the strings). It is a small and simple device, yet very useful in my case. I also tried using it with Guitar Rig 5, free version. Works amazingly well.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersWell built, 4ins and 4outs is a 5 star.
Drivers need to be better and I get glitching when using more than one VST Instruments.
I’m running Cubase on Win Pro 7, i5 vPro HP
Latency is at 40.113ms which is more than I wanted.
I found it doesn’t go as loud as other products like the steinberg mrkII and it doesn’t sound as tight, bright and compact with also the latency being a lot better than the behringer.
I thought this would be an upgrade from the steinberg but not quite.
Price is very good for the amount of inputs but that’s all it has really to offer for me so I shall be returning the unit.

    After leaving this review…..

I swiftly browsed for a driver update and it rectified the glitches and also the latency dropped to 10.113ms a massive difference from 40ms.

So 5 For this fine and well built unit.

    Very good value interface

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis is probably one of my best value purchases I’ve ever made. I can’t believe all the features packed into this thing. For the price it is insanely good value for money. XLR, 1/4 jack, midi, 4 track simultaneous recording in Garageband. I couldn’t be happier with Behringer. Started off as a budget brand that I approached with caution but honestly the quality of their stuff seems to be winning me over every time.

This thing is built like a tank, too. If you’re lugging it around it’d take some work to damage this thing.

Over the moon with the quality of the recording from my microphone and also my Ray34 bass, which are the two devices I’ve tested it with so far. Oh, and a midi keyboard, which was also plug and play with Garageband.

If you’re in the market for a new music I/O you really can’t go wrong with this.

Plugged this straight into my Macbook running Logic Pro x and it just works. Had it connected using all 4 inputs and the MIDI in at the same time and it gives a much better sound quality than my older interface and with a metal body build its a solid piece of kit. For under 100 its a steal!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThis is a solid quality piece of kit. It seems to work fine powered by USB but has a mains adaptor as well. The sound quality seems excellent to me and noise levels are very low. it drives all my condenser mics fine. It works straight out of the box on my Mac – no fussing about with drivers or installation. It is solidly built and feels like it will survive in most environments. I’ve seen many examples of audio interfaces by several manufacturers and I think this is a good as any, but with twice as many inputs for half the price.

Can’t beat the price for this 4 channel interface! I plugged it into my mac and it works, no drivers to download or anything. The build quality looks good. My only complaint is the low volume going out to the mains. My old interface is much louder.

Golden Review Award: 39 From Our UsersBehringer have a hit-and-miss reputation with some of their equipment, but their mixers and interfaces are actually pretty highly regarded. The first thing I noticed about this unit is the high build quality – the case is all steel and not plastic. It’s reassuringly heavy, and the knobs feel pretty solid.

I bought this as an upgrade from an M-Audio M-Track with 2 preamps, because I needed the extra inputs. I haven’t done a scientific comparison of the audio quality but after some testing I am very pleased with the quality of the preamps. They offer much higher gain and lower noise than the M-Audio interface, which is very valuable to me as I do a lot of ambient classical recording where good, clean gain really counts.

It loses a star because the software isn’t great. I downloaded the latest driver from the website rather and while it does work perfectly, I was unable to change the sample rate from 192kHz. I don’t think I am doing anything wrong, and there are many forum posts online about similar problems with the driver.

One thing that can confuse people about this unit – it has a mains adapter but it CAN also run only on power from the USB connection (“bus powered”). I was able to run 4 condenser microphones with 48V phantom power from this with it only getting power from my laptop’s USB port and it worked flawlessly. I guess the power supply is in case you have microphones that require more power.

After searching around for the money this is the best buy in my opinion. Look at all the io compare to similar products in the same price range. I can not compare use over time as this is my first audio interface, but from the demo in shop this gave me more for my money.

Golden Review Award: 15 From Our UsersWell what’s not to like….. 4 inputs, midi inputs, loadsa outputs, inserts, phantom power, 24 bit 192 kHz…… the list goes on! All this for about the price of a night out. I had an maudio FireWire one that cost 3 times as much and only had 2 inputs.
I run it thru a mac and it’s literally plug and play! No firmware or divers needed. Find it in logic or whatever ur using and that’s it.
Build quality is extremely sturdy and the only real thing I think they coulda put on it is an on off button. To turn it off u need to pull out power cord.
These are hard to get as when places get them they sell out quick. I bought from gear4music as they said they had them in stock. Turns out they didn’t and I would receive one till Oct! But thru emails back n forth they assured my a few days to a week. I then phoned then and was told nothing till Oct. I then seen thru Amazon that inta audio was selling them. Was a little dubious due to gear4music not having them so phoned inta audio and low and behold they had them and I would receive it in a day or 2!
So all in all an amazing bit of kit and a great company that sold them too.

This is the only audio interface in this price range offers 4 mic/line/inst inputs. It has nice recording sound, and it offers enough gain for weak signals from tube microphones. The latest UMC ASIO driver for WIN10 &11 allows 4 channel recording. However, the downside is four channel recording is not possible with Audacity. I am using Ableton Live 11.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersThis audio interface is really good! I mean, I’ve heard lots and lots of bad stuff about them building these in china, but seriously, this interface is great! Mine at least, the first I got, is working perfectly and took no time to set up.

The item was very well packed inside the box, even though it’s built like a tank and can withstand shakings or drops.

I connected it to my computer, then downloaded the driver on Behringer’s website, and when I opened my DAW, it was right there for me to select, easy peasy!

I used TS cables to make the connections with my mixer (which is also a Behringer), but there’s also an option for xlr on inputs, and RCA for outputs.

Now, for the sound quality, I must say I am impressed. I have XENYX amplifiers on my mixer, and comparing them to the MIDAS amplifiers on this interface, the MIDAS ones are much better, way less noise when cranked up, although they are not transparent, but that’s a hard feat to accomplish on this budget.

Other than that, I like the shape of it, it’s easy to find a spot for it on my cluttered desk.

I recommend this item to anyone who has a home studio, although I wouldn’t really recommend it for professional uses, unless maybe you turn off the amps and use better ones via the insert?

I bought the Behringer UCA202 to copy LPs to FLAC format. It does this well, though only 16 bit (CD quality). It is easy to set up and use, I used Audacity as the software, and it was easy to set it up to recognise the Behringer instead of the in-built sound card of the laptop.
