My wife wanted a new machine to replace a vintage hand-operated model she has, and this electric machine has been a revelation.

She particularly likes the 40 stitch types, along with the seperate speed settings. She is re-learning some old skills and finds the push button settings a useful feature, and has even tried over-locking for the first time.

Set up is reasonable, but perhaps in hindsight an automatic needle threader would have been a bonus. This machine does not have such a feature, but once you have carried out the set up a few times it soon becomes easier.

The machine is not noisy in operation, and my wife finds that she is becoming much more confident even though she has so far only done a couple of projects. She finds the machine is quite intuitive now.

This is a good machine, and despite having only a 40w motor it has coped with the materials she has so far used – even a heavy pair of denim jeans giving no trouble at all.

You get a few different feet, needles and bobbins, along with a basic tool. The instruction pamphlet is reasonably clear, but care is required to begin with while reading it (some instructions relate to models with auto threading and so on and we found it easy to initially get side tracked).

Certainly, we think this is a nice machine that is very suitable for a beginner, and copes well with more general duties as long as the materials used are not too heavy.

I am so so happy with this purchase. I have only used the starter sewing machines like the LS14s version and others of similar caliber.

This machine blows them out of the park.
Quiet, easy to feed materials through, you can change the size of the thread at the click of a button down to the exact decimal you need it to be for each project.
It goes at a snails pace if needed which is perfect for beginners, and you can bump it with a sliding bar, if you want it fast, it goes incredibly fast.

I’ve loved using it. Best of all though, it has a knit stitch, and can be used by just dropping your bobbin in, you don’t have to spend time digging out the thread with the needle!

    Beautiful machine!

This is my first sewing machine. I came to sewing with no previous experience at the age of 62, having been inspired by The Great British Sewing Be. A bit of research helped me establish that I wanted a machine that wasn’t over complicated, but that had enough modern features to make doing a decent job easier. This one clearly had all I would need as my sewing improved, without overwhelming me in the early stages. I have now been using it regularly for a couple of months and I love it! It’s lightweight, easy to use and does everything I need it to do, now and in the future. Highly recommended!

It’s years since my wife used a sewing machine. She has found it easy to get back into and the on line tutorials are informative and helpful. Very pleased with the purchase.

It’s excellent so far .. but need to experiment more. My last sewing machine was a top of the range Singer but unused for 20 years. I found this Brother easy to set up except for getting the upper thread round the hook. Hoping I just need more practice!

I love my new sewing machine. It has some great features and stitches that I use all the time. So glad I bought it as I have not stopped using it since I got it. Highly recommended.

I bought this to replace my old workhorse Janome which had worn out. It is quieter and lighter but the stitching is not as good. I use the herringbone stitch to applique Harris Tweed and it doesn’t give such a good, pleasing to the eye result. I think it would be perfect for ordinary dressmaking, and has some nice embroidery stitches, but I’m not sure it will cope for as long as my old machine did before it ‘unravels’! But, overall, value for money.

My previous machine died on me so bought this. Tried not using the foot pedal which at first was weird but now I love it! Love that I can change the speed so easily.
    Its so easy to use.
The overlock stitch works well too. Absolutely love it and for the price, a great sewing machine for beginners+ I’ve only took up sewing last year, so fairly new to sewing and I’ve made lots of garments using this already. The buttonhole is really easy and button foot took a little getting used to but easy once I sorted how to move the needle position with digital buttons rather than a manual slider. I’d have no hesitation in recommending this. Great little machine. Oh and really lightweight too.

Such a great machine, really easy to use and set up, lots of different settings. Would recommend for any level or experience of sewer.

So far so good. I haven’t been using it as much as I like. The machine is perfect for my need but the cover is a really flimsy plastic which didn’t last long.

I bought this for my 16 year old daughter who is taking A level textiles and product design. It’s a fantastic machine with a choice of different stitches (which worked well for her embroidery). I’d say it’s just right for a beginner/intermediate user. Highly recommended.

Love this machine! I’ve had it for 3 weeks now and been busy putting it through it’s paces and it has passed with flying colours. Made a sampler with all the different stitches on, tried all the different types of pressure feet, sewn thin stretchy fabric and even upholstery material. Sewed 2 sizes of buttons on, made a button hole and done a blind hem. It’s so easy to use while having everything most people would want. Ideal for both beginners and more practiced sewers. The manual is excellent and if you follow the instructions you should have no problems. Make sure you use the correct size of needle for the fabric and good quality thread, I always use gutermann all purpose thread. So glad I bought this lovely machine.

Bought for a child for their online sewing class. It’s been easy to use so perfect for (confident) beginner – in particular as it has the all important speed control in addition to the foot pedal. I can’t sew so put aside 30 mins to put together – inevitably threading the bobbin and needle is a bit fiddly but fine when using the instructions which I used alongside a YouTube video too. It looks good, easy to use and we are pleased with it.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI love this machine! As a beginner the speed control was so beneficial. I have made bags with vinyl, cork, fusible fleece, etc and have managed with the majority of them comfortably however, as I am becoming more adventurous and experimental, I realise that I may have to upgrade at some point to something that can cope with ever increasing layers (I think bag making is going to be my thing, lol). Saying that, I am in no rush to upgrade. This is a brilliant machine and I have not once regretted buying i

Lovely machine, works for me 😁

I bought this to replace an old Toyota one, it’s amazing how much better it is. I haven’t been able to use it as much as I’d like as patterns and materials are in short supply

Nice machine but struggled with it to begin with. Turns out it does not like cheap cotton that they show with it as an add on. Using Gutermann thread now and works fine.

I started sewing with a Brother XN1700 in April 2020 – I developed a problem with my wrists soon after discovering my love for sewing. I was lucky enough to get this machine for Christmas – a computerised machine means I don’t have to turn knobs constantly. It’s fairly easy to understand – but it helps I have some knowledge of using a machine. The speed settings are really useful to help improve my stitching. It’s lightweight and comes with some great accessories. I absolutely love this machine and highly recommend to any sewer whatever your ability

Buona sera! Buone Feste!

    Bella macchina, garantita 5 anni

I bought this as a replacement to my Brother FS100, as I didn’t want to spend as much for 100 stitches, when I only need a lot fewer stitches. The Brother FS40 has all of the essential stitches, and is brilliant for my clothes-making endeavours.

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our Usersi love this machine i previously had a singer embroidery machine and it was a complete pain, i like this machine so much more. it works like a dream and is easy to use. it is extremely easy to re-thread as well, its like one smooth action. one problem i have found though is that the needle bolt sticks out far (like over an inch) and it has hit my finger and tore through it, i am wondering it it can be cut down smaller. if you get one make sure you remember and that you are aware of it.

    eally nice machine

Just what I expected, yet so much more it’s an excellent product.
Never used a machine like this, last sewing machine was for edging carpet in a church in RAF barracks in Germany.
Maybe I can be of some tiny help in near future producing PPE Masks from home. once I research and get get the best appropriate materials /pattens to hand. More so the necessary ; also the skills required and updated.
Finally thank you to the dedicated work staff and logistics who keep us supplied during this lockdown.
    Worth the purchase would recommend.
