Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI absolutely love this machine! It’s a dream to sew with, I’ve been teaching my daughter to sew alongside learning to quilt and this machine really is so lovely to use. Highly recommended.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI purchased these for my Textiles class from school budget after very very lengthy research. I needed something cheap-ish that would do free motion embroidery. We switched from older mechanical Janome. The stitches were better with Janome and it was easier to do quick fixes. While this brother does a really good job with what we need it for, if by accident a pupil forgets to get the dog feed back up for normal foot the machine jams up beyond belief. I can cope with them because I know how to fix them, but the whole having to unscrew the top to get to the bobbin case is a faff. We also struggled with metallic threads. It’s not super easy to thread up for a super beginner, but it’s very easy to use.
What I like about them the most and was a must have is the speed control. With a class of 30 it is very important that I don’t have to rely on how heavy footed a child is for safety. Another good point for classroom use is that when they forget to put the presser foot down it gives them an error message instead of stitching and jamming up like old machines do. I am happy with them, but make sure you are confident doing quick fixes if you buy it – the bobbin case can get in to awkward positions after jamming.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersLove this machine!! Simple easy to understand features. My previous Brother machine lasted years, but was not computerised, I was a bit apprehensive as to how it would perform but it’s ticked all the boxes for me. You have the option of using the foot pedal or automated feature. Using the simple adjustable speed settings is a feature I love, you can adjust it from slow to high so easily, So if you have a tricky procedure to tackle you can do this so well on a really slow speed, and it builds confidence. The machine is very quiet. Excellent value for money, I shopped around and Amazon had the lowest price.

I started sewing in February with a manual machine and soon realised I wanted something better. I had this machine in my wish list for 3 months and Black Friday came and the machine was reduced in price with option to buy over 5 months interest free.
Since receiving it I have put it through it’s paces. It’s easy to use, smooth in use and quieter than my other machine. I have already made 3 quilts with it.
This is a great upgrade to my manual machine.

    Updated review June 2021
I have now had this machine for 18 months and it has really been used a lot for making quilts, bags, boxes- you name it I’ve made it AND it is as good today as it was when I bought it.

I would wholly recommend this machine fur anyone who wants a decent machine without needing a bank loan to get it. It’s sturdy and very easy to use.

Just used basic straight stitch, zig zag and bobbin winding so cannot yet comment on more complex functions, but happy with it so far.

Golden Review Award: 12 From Our UsersI love everything about this machine. I’m a confident beginner (maybe intermediate). The machine just does what it’s supposed to do. I mainly sew clothes, so I tend to use the first four stitches (along with the button one that was magical).
I’ve had this for about 2 months and use it quite a lot. The outside is plastic of course and a few of the parts seem very delicate but nothing has broken. Love the top load bobbin where you can see how much thread you have left on the bobbin. The only thing I needed to buy was a stretch needle for sewing on stretch fabrics. I still have to master the stretch stitch (number 3).

    Absolutely no complaints

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersEstoy encantada con la adquisicin.

I’m fairly new to sewing and have been using a brother ls14 which is a entry level machine and basic.
My husband upgraded me to this and wow.
It’s still roughly the same size as the ls14 and not much heavier but one thing I noticed immediately was how consistent the stitches were compared to the ls14.
I thought not using a foot pedal would be odd but you soon get the hang of it, I really like the controllable speed, makes sewing curves and corners alot easier.
Comes with alot of attachments and I really love the embroidery stitch.
It’s easy to thread, fairly quiet and I find it smooth.
The throat plate has plenty of guide markings on too.
It’s safe to say I love it. I mainly make bags and has a great size free arm for this.
Compared to my little ls14, which is a great starter machine I feel now I have a much more efficient and adjustable machine. Being able to change stitch length I have found to be a necessity.
If your thinking of getting one, dont hesitate

Golden Review Award: 44 From Our UsersI had a New Home sewing machine back in the early 80’s when I was a teenager, my lovely Aunt got me one when I started a dressmaking course at college. I’m in my 50’s now and that machine has finally bit the dust, so I decided to invest in a new machine. I didn’t need anything too fancy but a reliable machine that can sew most materials with a double needle and fully automatic buttonhole ability. This Brother machine ticked all the boxes for me, I also did a little research and this one came up well thought of in reviews and even a sewing club review. It has 40 stitch designs including overlocking an important stitch for many fabric edges. I’ve used it so far on making a skirt and for sewing pieces of my machine knitted garments, like this baby cardigan in my photo here. I really like the brightly lit screen showing me clearly what stitch number I’m using and even advises what presser foot to use. It’s smart too and won’t sew if you haven’t got the presser foot down. I love the automatic sewing without the foot pedal, a big advance in sewing machines, the light is good too, especially as an LED rather than a bulb. The sewing machine has lots of extra presser feet and very easy to put on and off (no fiddly screws) too. All in all I recommend this Brother sewing machine, it’s build though plastic feels sturdy yet light, my only criticism is Brother should supply it with a better cover, the one it comes with is flimsy, but I’ve bought a sewing machine bag from John Lewis (measure the machine before you buy one, sewing bags do vary in size).

    UPDATE ON NEEDLE THREADING
I noticed someone ask about threading the needle on this sewing machine, honestly it’s really easy once you know how, you need a cheap plastic needle threader, I got two free when I purchased some thread from Amazon, see my photos to see what it is. I bent the fine metal part (that’s diamond shaped) down so I could hold it to thread the needle on the machine. Then hold the plastic bit of the needle threader and push the fine metal part through the eye of the needle from the BACK (that’s bits important) once pushed through take your thread and push it in between the metal diamond shape, hold the end of the thread and pull the needle threader backwards and out of the eye of the needle, it will pull the thread through the eye of the needle as it goes, keep pulling until it all through. See my photos to help you, once you know how easy it is you’ll do this every time easily. I hope this helps you.

Lovely sewing machine, perfect for a beginner to advanced, plus UPDATE Photos on needle threading

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI’ve been doing sewing classes and decided to buy my own machine, and did extensive research. I picked this one based on customer reviews, cost and the machine specifications itself.
I would say that the manual is very confusing to read as it has instructions for different models on the same page (or maybe it’s just me!). Don’t be put off though as the machine comes with an instructional DVD. Or you can do what I did and watch FS40 model vids on YouTube on my phone.
The other thing is that the slowest setting for the machine stitching is real slow. I use the middle or last as that it fast enough for me as a confident-ish beginner.
I highly recommend this machine for beginners. You must be fairly comfortable with technology though or a manual machine may be a better fit for you. However you can always practice on it with scraps of cloth before sewing a garment to get used to it.
I’m so bowled over by this machine. It sews so smoothly and the different types of stitching all look very professional. It’s so easy to thread and it’s beautiful. I can’t believe I own something so good, that was not expensive for all that it does.

Smooth sewing machine, well worth the price with all its features

Golden Review Award: 21 From Our UsersThe Brother FS-40 is my first computerised machine. An upgrade. I have been using this machine a wile now and have gone from beginner to being confident and more experienced sewer. I have crafted many items, taken up curtains, put in zips and patch work. The 7 included feet are easy to change and use. The manual and DVD have been a great help. One project I sewed was to make a new machine cover as the one provided is thin, white plastic. The 39 diffrent stitches are great! I love using the decorative stitches, my faverotes are the scallop edge no. 13 and no. 23 a small flower/star pattern but I do use them all. My Brother sewing machine is out all the time on a small desk ready to do quick repairs/ mend things including rips/ holes in household items/clothes.Recommended.

Golden Review Award: 112 From Our UsersI first started sewing with a 40 year old singer zig zag machine. Unfortunately the older the machine got, the louder it got and in the end my mum, who lives next door, was so fed up of the faux freight train sound vibrating through the walls that she dragged me out to shop to buy a new machine. I was a relative beginner and knew nothing about the bells and whistles technology offers these days. What I did know was, I needed an idiot proof machine, something not too big and clunky, and something that could take a pounding. I wanted to go computerised and mums budget was tight, I thought I was looking at a low end, lucky to last a year sewing machine, but thankfully I was wrong.
This little gem was perfect, I would even go as far as to say it is fool proof. It worked right out the box, with no more than a cursory glance at the quick start guide, before I was away sewing my first project (cushion covers). The stitches are always neat and the movement as the fabric feeds through is smooth and even. It has three speeds, I found this is very useful for a beginner and also versatile for different projects. I have subjected this machine to almost 2 years hard labour and I sew long hours, daily. Everything from clothes to teddy bears and I have even dabbled with quilting. The machine has never skipped a stitch and keeps up with the demands I make of it with no effort on it’s part at all. The throat of the machine is quite small, but don’t be deceived, I have had a double quilt through it with only a little bit of awkward manouvering. I also free motioned a smaller quilt and was delighted with the results. My machine was a high street purchase and came with an extension table that I think is availble on Amazon separately. It is a sturdy extension with a measuring guide along the edge, very useful for quick reference and measuring elastic ect.
I particularly like the button hole attachment that is included. It makes the job so easy and precise and the finish is always top notch. The decorative stitches are lovely too and unlike my old Singer, doesn’t bunch up the fabric as it embroiders. The machine came with a few attachments, but I have also purchased some non Brother add-ons from Amazon, all fit and work perfectly, adding to my growing affection for this machine. In our house the Brother is nicknamed the little trojan, simply because it does everything I ask of it and more. It sews layers of fabric with no problem at all. It is easy to navigate small fiddly projects, it hammers through denim and treats silks and delicate fabrics like royalty. I am no longer a beginner sewist and it is, in part, thanks to this machine. It has given me the confidence to keep pushing myself to try new things without having the worry of what my machine can handle. But best of all, is it is so quiet. Which is great for my midnight ‘can’t sleep’ sewing marathons and great for my mum too as she doesn’t have the faux freight train vibrating through her house anymore.

Golden Review Award: 37 From Our UsersI got this machine to replace my 30+ yr old Jones machine. To begin with I thought that all the extra functions were superfluous, all I needed it to do was go forward in a straight line, and maybe a bit of zig-zagging on stretch materials…. but actually I’ve found the variety in choice quite useful. I know some machines boast many more options than the FS40, but I’ve struggled to find an occasion to use the variety found in this machine. More than enough for my usage. I tend to make clothing for myself, I’m sure a quilter would find more use for these elements.

The automatic buttonholes take a minute to get your head round, but wow, what a timesaver in comparison to my old (non-automatic) machine! Also, being able to sew on buttons straight from the machine is a lifesaver. With 5 different types of buttonholes to choose from, each specifically for a different type of fabric, its a very useful function, especially if you’re used to the old-school version.

The other things I was really impressed with is the varying speeds you can select, and how quiet this machine is when at full pelt!

Its a lot more lightweight then I expected. I have no problem putting this machine away in hard-to-reach places without the fear that I’m going to drop it on my head when retrieving it again. However the weight of it certainly doesn’t take away from the machines ability to get through heavy materials. So far I’ve made thick denim jeans, a leatherette jacket, and plenty of items with stretch / jersey materials. As will all machines I recommend getting the correct needle for your fabric and you will have no issues making garments with this Brother.

All of the machine parts are stored in the machine itself, a very useful function… and mine came with an extended table, also a very useful addition.

Its taken me a minute to get used to the seam allowances. Namely, the guide measurements seem to all be in imperial measurements, but you can nudge the needle in what seems like metric increments. Maybe I’m just being daft with this, but I’m still having to measure the exact seam allowance distance for most things I’m making. Being European I tend to make things using the metric system, but its not more complex then reading american patterns and needing to translate.

All in all, its a great little machine at a really reasonable price. I’ve been using it regularly for about 6 months now and my poor old Jones has never since got a look-in. If you are looking to upgrade your old machine or purchase this for a loved-one, I thoroughly recommend the Brother FS40. You wont regret it!

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersLa macchina da cucire come viene descritta dal fornitore.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersSuper .

Golden Review Award: 34 From Our UsersLove it!! for the money this machine packs a punch – it sews anything from organza to heavy denim and furnishing fabrics. The tension actually works (which is completely the opposite to my last machine). I would purchase this machine again readily – if you have the cash to also buy the brother 1034d overlocker you are set up for all sewing jobs

Golden Review Award: 7 From Our UsersJe m’clate avec cet outils fabuleux.
Eclairage super.

Golden Review Award: 13 From Our UsersToda la vida, en mi casa, usamos mquina de coser Singer, pero ahora pens en cambiar la marca para conocer otras. Compr Brother FS40 .
Me encanta.
He utilizado algunos puntos decorativos, que me salieron perfectos.

Golden Review Award: 58 From Our UsersJ’ai longtemps hesit.. Tres longtemps..

Golden Review Award: 33 From Our UsersUser friendly, I really like the pedal free option and it’s nice and quiet. Flimsy plastic cover provided, I would suggest purchasing a more substantial case for added protection. Also just a tad plasticky after my all metal Pfaff, but this does mean it’s light weight to carry. Very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend to others.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI bought this on a whim as I always wanted a machine. I always do lots of research but my guy was swaying me on this one and its fab! I do not regret it as my first machine and it was discounted. Couldn’t find it cheaper anywhere else.

I would say though, I little worries that when I get there, doing sleeves will be hard as it doesn’t get thinner to put cylindrical things through…. if you know what I mean.

I also read reviews that it handles denim and there are denim needles and all sorts for it as its a popular brand.

very easy to use and helpful manual and dvd.

Golden Review Award: 81 From Our UsersI bought this machine as a beginner, not expecting a lot given its price, however this machine has pleasantly surprised me. This machine has no problem quilting, sewing jeans or general everyday sewing. The machine comes with a wide range of feet allowing you to be very creative, lots of further feet available also. Very easy to use and just generally a great machine, I wouldn’t change this for the world now! I like the fact that I can operate this by either the foot pedal or the start and stop button.
