How to get the best results from your Coral Paint Brushes

Taking a few easy brush-care steps before, during and after use will extend brush lifespan and ensure optimum performance. We’ve shared some useful tips to help you achieve impressive results every time.

Q: How should I prepare my paint brush before use?

A: Before first use, pre-wash and comb the brush to remove any debris. For best results on every use, pre-wet the brush with a suitable thinner and remove excess for a slightly damp, primed state that will accept the most paint. Avoid using water-based and solvent-based coatings with the same brush. Always refer to the coating manufacturer’s recommendations before starting application.

Q: What surface preparation is needed before painting?

A: If required, use a scraper or sandpaper to ensure all surfaces to be painted are free from loose or flaking paint. Fill any cracks or holes with a suitable filler or sealant and sand down before wiping the area clean. Before painting, ensure surfaces are free from dust and dirt; wiping or washing them with sugar soap and water works well.

Q: What’s the most effective application method for painting a neat edge line (‘cutting in’)?

A: Dip the brush into the paint around a third of the way down the filaments to prevent overloading, then tap gently against the side of the paint container to remove excess. About an inch away from the area you want to cut in to, start at the top and work down, holding the paintbrush like a pencil so that it is parallel to the edge. Gently steer your brush towards the corner, using light, even strokes as you carefully follow the direction of the line, working back into the wet edge.

Q: What’s the best application method on larger surfaces?

A: For painting a large area by brush, work in areas of about 50x50cm, applying the paint in horizontal strokes to evenly distribute the paint, then finishing off with light vertical strokes in the same direction.

Q: What’s the best way to clean my paint brush after use?

A: First, remove excess paint from the tool, then wash with a suitable thinner. For water-based coatings, use water. For solvent-based coatings, use white spirit. Work into the base of the bristles to remove all paint then rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean towel. Never soak, use hot water, or apply direct heat to brushes. Comb to shape and hang dry naturally.

Q: How should I store paint brushes during and after use to prolong their lifespan?

A: To prevent dry-out and avoid dust and dirt entering the paint during short breaks in painting or overnight on longer projects, protect paintbrushes with an airtight cover like Coral’s Seal & Save Storage Wrappers, which fit mist brushes up to 4” wide and keep painting tools fresh for up to 3 weeks! Once your project is complete, store brushes in a cover or original packaging in a dry, dust-free place, to keep them in top condition for future use.

Q: Are there any time-saving tips to speed up my project?

A: Use Coral Paintwiz Scuttle and Kettle Liners in your paint container or tray to avoid the hassle and mess of washing out your paint containers daily or when switching paint colours. To prevent paint dry-out during breaks, simply tie the drawstrings to keep paint fresh.

Excellent brushes. These are non shed. They wash easily and well and most importantly keep their shape after. With a steady hand and these brushes, cutting in is a joy….
    Recommended.

Buying these brushes just from an image I wondered if the ‘ bristles’ would be too long and the brush thus unmanageable but I used one for glossing and it was very satisfactory. Sufficiently resistant but continent with the paint. Will now Chuck out lots of ‘ past it’ brushes and get more of these. No bristle shedding eithe

The Coral 31416 Zero Paint Brushes are a game-changer for any DIY enthusiast. These brushes, with their “no loss of bristle” promise, live up to their reputation. The 3-piece pack is a great value, and the quality of these paintbrush heads is exceptional. They maintain their bristles even after multiple uses, ensuring a smooth and precise paint application every time. Whether you’re a professional or a DIY hobbyist, these Coral paintbrushes are a must-have in your toolkit. I couldn’t be happier with their performance!

I wanted to touch up some paint on a shed at an allotment. It was far from home, with no cleaning facilities and I expected any brushes would be dried up and useless by the time I got them home. So I bought cheap brushes that I wouldn’t mind ruining. These did not shed bristles (yay!) and did the job ok. The bristles are a bit short which does make painting harder but this was clearly shown in the photos so I can’t mark them down for that. In the end I got them home in time to clean them out, so they survived and I’ve been able to use them again. I would happily buy them again for jobs that might ruin them (painting with the solvent-based version of hammerite?) but in a situation where I expected to be able to clean and re-use the brush I’d go for something with longer bristles.

These are definitely not zero gravity brushes. But I found them to be excellent for painting in normal gravity. Can also be used to paint horizontally across surfaces.

I’ve been painting and decorating since I left school twenty years ago, and these are the best brushes I’ve used. Great control, hold the paint brilliantly, no loss of bristles and easy to clean. And a great price. Definitely recommend!

I do my own decorating (not professional), I live in an old house with bumpy walls and uneven corners.
Ive tried various brushes (branded) but I thought I’d try these when they popped up on offer, I’m so glad I did.

    They don’t shed hairs.
    They keep their shape,
    Comfortable grip (no blisters).
Very easy to clean. (easiest by far).
Good at creating a straight lines.

These are now my preferred brushes, I doubt I’d look for any others.

Perfect for walls and upcycling furniture.

Bought to use with paintstripper, I have some more expensive brushes that I didn’t want to ruin so I bought these as cheapos to use instead, but I’ve found out these are decent brushes, don’t drop bristles and clean really easy with warm soapy water..I’ve used them to paint with also and no bristles bent at fell out and again cleaned really easy with warm water, I do a lot of decorating and I’ve been through a lot of brushes and I would buy these agai

Nice and dense bristles. None of this flopping about which others have done from Amazon. They hold a good amount of paint and the sizes are all great. I’m not the best at looking after things, so whenever I start a new project, I tend to get new brushes (Unless they cleaned up nicely). And have been going back to these every time.

I used these brushes with various paint mediums. I used the small one to treat knots with Zinsser B.I.N, and cleaned it with methylated spirits, the middle size I used with primer and undercoat to paint a door frame, and washed with water. Again the middle size with Crown Trade Satin finish, and cleaned with white spirit, and then washed with water and washing up liquid. Not one bristle came out, and they were very easy to clean. I would certainly buy them again.

I’ve used all the brushes to paint a wooden door with 10 year exterior wood paint. The paint goes on well, smoothly. The brushes were very easy to clean, and definitely easier than some old brushes I had previously. I did lose two bristles from the brushes whilst putting 3 coats on a front door, so definitely NOT loss-less, but this is not excessive

I have used these for several large paint jobs and I have not experienced any shedding. That may be because I have quiet a light stroke when painting but they do exactly what they say they do. None or limited shedding.

This was my first time purchasing higher quality brushes in attempt to cut time spent layering streaky paint with cheap brushes that shed. After one coat of paint with these brushes gave a flawless application, they do not lose bristles & are very easy to clean in warm water but I did get a little staining on my brush tips. Perhaps something stronger than water would eliminate that completely. All in all a great purchase, highly recommend for the price

I actually WOULD recommend these unless of course you are doing super fine work with non-leveling paints/varnishes, but then you wouldn’t be looking at these anyhow.
I would absolutely buy these again.

I have numerous brushes and these ones are by far the best for accurate cutting in. The bristles are quite short and stiff, enabling you to get a good accurate line.

They do not shed and are really easy to clean.
