How to get the best results from your Coral Paint Brushes

Taking a few easy brush-care steps before, during and after use will extend brush lifespan and ensure optimum performance. We’ve shared some useful tips to help you achieve impressive results every time.

Q: How should I prepare my paint brush before use?

A: Before first use, pre-wash and comb the brush to remove any debris. For best results on every use, pre-wet the brush with a suitable thinner and remove excess for a slightly damp, primed state that will accept the most paint. Avoid using water-based and solvent-based coatings with the same brush. Always refer to the coating manufacturer’s recommendations before starting application.

Q: What surface preparation is needed before painting?

A: If required, use a scraper or sandpaper to ensure all surfaces to be painted are free from loose or flaking paint. Fill any cracks or holes with a suitable filler or sealant and sand down before wiping the area clean. Before painting, ensure surfaces are free from dust and dirt; wiping or washing them with sugar soap and water works well.

Q: What’s the most effective application method for painting a neat edge line (‘cutting in’)?

A: Dip the brush into the paint around a third of the way down the filaments to prevent overloading, then tap gently against the side of the paint container to remove excess. About an inch away from the area you want to cut in to, start at the top and work down, holding the paintbrush like a pencil so that it is parallel to the edge. Gently steer your brush towards the corner, using light, even strokes as you carefully follow the direction of the line, working back into the wet edge.

Q: What’s the best application method on larger surfaces?

A: For painting a large area by brush, work in areas of about 50x50cm, applying the paint in horizontal strokes to evenly distribute the paint, then finishing off with light vertical strokes in the same direction.

Q: What’s the best way to clean my paint brush after use?

A: First, remove excess paint from the tool, then wash with a suitable thinner. For water-based coatings, use water. For solvent-based coatings, use white spirit. Work into the base of the bristles to remove all paint then rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean towel. Never soak, use hot water, or apply direct heat to brushes. Comb to shape and hang dry naturally.

Q: How should I store paint brushes during and after use to prolong their lifespan?

A: To prevent dry-out and avoid dust and dirt entering the paint during short breaks in painting or overnight on longer projects, protect paintbrushes with an airtight cover like Coral’s Seal & Save Storage Wrappers, which fit mist brushes up to 4” wide and keep painting tools fresh for up to 3 weeks! Once your project is complete, store brushes in a cover or original packaging in a dry, dust-free place, to keep them in top condition for future use.

Q: Are there any time-saving tips to speed up my project?

A: Use Coral Paintwiz Scuttle and Kettle Liners in your paint container or tray to avoid the hassle and mess of washing out your paint containers daily or when switching paint colours. To prevent paint dry-out during breaks, simply tie the drawstrings to keep paint fresh.

Genuinely excellent paint brushes. Bought them pretty much as disposable, but actually they are really good! Not a single bristle dropped yet and excellent paint holding.

    Well worth the money.

Absolutely fantastic. They glide over the paint…..cutting in is perfect! Retain shape and literally no hair loss. I like them so much I’m actually going to wash these and use again (rather than my usual throw after every use). I highly recommend these brushes

These brushes are wonderful with solvent paint and I am on my third or fourth pack as I am decorating the whole house. However they do not seem to like water based paint as they clog up quickly

For the price I was a little reluctant to use on a job. But I thought I’d give them a go after reading some reviews. I was relatively happy with the brush quality when using them for painting walls with emulation. But when it came to glossing they are amazing! Really good quality brushes for especially for glossing.

It isn’t good that the package had not been sealed in the cardboard envelope, especially as I Could seal it when it arrived to see how sticky the seal was The product itself arrives in perfect packaging, no unnecessary packaging. I haven’t used them yet but will update if there are any faults.

Very happy with this paint brush set. Excellent for use with gloss paint and emulsion. They do clean up easily in white spirit. They do not lose any bristles that I can detect so that’s a good thing when wanting a fine finish. It’s a handy set to cover most small to medium size areas. Very good value for the overall quality.

These are OK. They are easy too clean but the no bristle loss is a lie. I used these for very light painting on some touching of professionally done work so was in no way using these for a big job. At least 5 bristles came out whilst painting and as I said this was for very light touching up such as small part of gloss on a door frame (not even the whole frame) so yes they are okay and for the price you can’t go wrong but expect bristles in the paint.

These are fantastic brushes for the price – recommended. Have bought a second set (mainly due to forgetting to clean them!)
They are advertised as ‘no loss of bristle’, and seems to be true – I’m not careful with these brushes in use or in cleaning, and they’ve been great.
I also find the yellow colour much better than ‘normal’ colours – it’s much easier to judge how much paint is on the brush, and how clean they are after use.
For the price, you really can’t go wrong.

  37. AnneBivins says:

Bought these as I wanted inexpensive paint brushes to paint my radiator with non-water based paint, which I knew would go to the trash after the job was done. They worked extremely well. In between coatings I wrapped them in cling foil and kept them in a cold place so I could use then again and this was no problem. At this price this is very good value. Next will be to try for wall surfaces, but so far so good.

I got these as throw aways for painting a wardrobe and chest of draws but they are so good I didn’t throw them away.

They left a good even coat while using satinwood, the bristles don’t fall out at all and always return to the original position which means you can be precise.

    Really happy

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAmazed by the quality of these, possibly one of the most sturdy bristles on a paint brush I’ve ever used.

Feel good and heavy, feel expensive without being expensive.

Easy to clean as well, I painted my front door using these and they didn’t miss a beat.

What I will say is, buy the 5 pack for a couple of pounds more, as the bigger brush will come in handy

Overall I’ll give it 4 out if 5 stars.

Check my other reviews of which I have a few

Very handy to have, Saturday, easy cleans.

These brushes are amazing. I usually get Harris from b and q but they had sold out when I checked so I got these thinking they would do. They are the best brushes I’ve ever used. No loss of bristles at all and they are so easy to clean. Literally just wash with water and they are fine. I’ve used them loads and they are still fantastic. Also usually in a mix pack there is at least one brush that is the size you don’t need but these are a perfect mix. Would recommend these over harris brushes.

I used a green paint and it has stained the bristles at the end.

Have bought many cheap brushes where you leave a bristle on your door every so often, or you don’t actually see the bristle till your painting is dry. So far this hasn’t happened with these brushes and I have given them a lot of use during the Covid Pandemic. They clean very easily as I am a stickler for cleaning them down once used. They don’t leave marks on my paining (ok maybe that is because I don’t use too much paint at a time) But I would recommend these brushes to anyone

Bought these for decorating the house and would highly recommend. The handles provide a good grip and feel much more expensive than they are, the bristles are soft and don’t leave bristle marks in the paint and they were really easy to clean out. A couple of bristles did come out, but nowhere near as bad as some paintbrushes I have used previously.

  61. Patricia Conte says:

After reading some of the reviews I thought I’d give them a go. Even losing a few bristles would be better than what I’d been working with. I’m glad I went for them. Feel great the paint with. Not lost a single bristle so far. I’ve used two brushes out of the pack so this may change but I’m very happy at the moment. Used with chalk and other water based paint. After washing, brushes don’t even look like they’ve been used. Would definitely recommend a try.

Very little bristle loss – two in three days. Holds the paint nicely without it running up to the handle (but I guess that depends on how far you stick the brush in the paint), gives a smooth and even finish and can be used to “cut in” with ease. Easy to clean with white spirit and good to go for the next task.

In the evening it is fun to surprise your friends by holding a brush with the bristles under your nose and pretending you have grown a yellow moustache overnight.

Not bad brushes, when cleaning they sometime hold secret buckets of water in the bristles but apart from that I like them

  69. Jeffry71Qcq says:

As someone who only uses water based paints I can’t comment on how easy they would be to clean if using spirit based paint .
However I have found these to be exceptional . Easy to use . Hold their form , no stray bristles and easy to clean right down to the roots . Why buy expensive bristle brushes when these are available .

I bought these on the reviews and price. I have to say, for the money, they are very very good. We did the bedroom and they really made things easier. There was no bristle loss and very easy to clean. Also as a cut in brush they are one of the best I have used that was not expensive.

Given the project I bought them for and the likelihood of me throwing them away, I chose to wash and keep them. Yep they are cheap but I found them good enough not to be a one job purchase and will use them again.

Got them for waterbased paint, for skirtings and cubbards. Used it with zinsser (undercoat sealer stain killer 😉 cant reccomend both enough. The paint sits well, some bristles are lost but really not many. A trick is to wrap them tightly in plastic/zip bag – they can be stored like that for week or two – no need to clean in between. Good handle grip. Would recommend. Tried to buy again but they are out at the moment unfortunatelly.

I use these wider brushes to cover the surfaces of large canvases. There are still the odd strands that will come out, so it’s not exactly “no loss”; but there are only a few, so it’s comparatively better. They cover the surfaces well, and are easily cleaned.

  78. Andrew Hoyle says:

given a five star rating for easy to clean which is done with water based paints but for gloss paints at this price they are thrown away. I was very sceptical of the claims, that these brushes would not shed any of their bristles; but was pleasantly surprised. I purchased these brushes to apply several coats of varnish to my tatty old kitchen table. They worked brilliantly. So I binned all my other brushes and bought some more.

I fully expected these brushes to be of poor quality considering the price however on recently using them to paint a room I found they are the best brushes I have ever used!. The handle comfort is great, no hair loss at all and the paint loads and unloads nicely from the brush, cleaning is also a doddle when using water based paint. if you are looking for a set of brushes then look no further!!

  83.  United Kingdom

Good for the price brushes, though the bristles tend to start sticking out at odd angles halfway through a job, making things a bit tricky.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWhat a joy these brushes are in use, great lines, hold the paint very well for cutting in especially – just one small point – the filaments feel really tremendous, but the odd one does come out I have found, a little disappointing – in spite of preparing the brush before use. But this is a small point – these are an excellent find and I recommend them purely for their ease of use, of course price, the filament tapered design and so easy to clean. I feel that my paintwork has moved up several grades!

  87. Anonymous says:

     United Kingdom

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersVery nice brushes. I got them for oil paintings as I do a lot in wet on wet technique. Usually synthetic brushes get clumped and sometimes loose hair. But these never lost a single hair until now and I can achieve several effects with these.

Good brushes with no hair loss

  88. Lindsey Hunter Lopez says:

     United Kingdom

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersTo claim zero hair loss is a huge statement and one that this brush, or any brush for that matter can truly live up to. It is however a nice brush with a good level of stiffness in the hairs that make them ideal for gloss paints. It doesn’t shed many hairs, one or two over a full length door and being yellow they are fairly easy to spot. Overall I can live with this for what I think is still a decent brush.

  89. Anonymous says:

     United Kingdom

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThe problem with using a number like zero (zero loss paint brush), is that it doesn’t leave any room for error. I DID lose bristles. Not many. But one or two. Generally, it’s a great brish and it did help us get our bedroom painted but it’s not zero loss. One star knocked off for that.

Can’t believe that after many years of home decor and `making do` with brushes, albeit from well known names, I have eventually found what I had been seeking. Takes a good paint loading and the yellow bristles seem to make it easier for detailed and lined finish. Absolutely delighted!

  91. Grant Trimboli says:

     United Kingdom

Golden Review Award: 37 From Our UsersOh blimey. I’ve bought all sorts of brushes on Amazon, being disappointed with most of them. But HERE IS the real thing. We unpack it and the first thing we notice is its sturdy make. Each brush is strong and flexible. We’re advised to ‘comb’ each brush; I just ran my fingers down each brush slowly and firmly. Not ONE stray fibre! I did notice that, if you are a bit too rigorous and forget to keep your ‘combing’ STRAIGHT, the outside bristles take on a splayed shape. But as roon as I groomed them, they were back to normal. As an artist (not a decorator) these brushes spring well from paint onto canvas, leaving movement somehow; my work is far less static, and I didn’t even know it WAS static till I compared the results. I think they are smooth operators, deserve more than 5 stars, and the ‘push-back’ on them is more then enough to ease aching hands for larger work; not every paintbrush has any spring-back at all. This movement does not detract from where you want to place your brush… each brush was the same – they had no side sweep, are great on curves. They feel, in fact, a bit like working with real quill pens and ink. Hold color well, right up to the ferule. Oh – just TREAT yourself.
NB……..AFTERTHOUGHT: How to store these brushes matters. I have mine in an old fox-mug, where they stand together with no mix of bristles causing later side-sweep. THESE BRUSHES NEED TAKING CARE OF and are worth it. They spring back into shape after use. I choose one, use, then lay it flat, its end just touching the main colours. LAY FLAT WHILST USING> Afterwards, clean as appropriate to your medium, then vigorously shake any excess water (et al) off. THEN, keep them in anything that’s tall enough to have them protected at the ferrule… I used an old tin. I’d advise that, if tin makes them splay out too much like 12 red roses, find something taller. They’ll stay close together and seem to like it! Bristles stay neat, grabbing any brush is easy, and most of all – have fun. These brushes can do surprisingly delicate work, the sides stay straight and no shedding whatsoever. They’re a pleasure.

Good price and painted well BUT unlike other people,I found several of the brushes did lose bristles, and I was painting something very smooth and simple too. Still pleased with brushes for price and they wash much much much better than your average brush

Golden Review Award: 6 From Our UsersI’ve done a lot of painting in my time – which is a fairly long time. And I have to say these are probably the best brushes for the price I’ve ever used. I’ve just repainted my kitchen cupboards and they were great for undercoat, chalk paint and varnish. Not one bristle to be seen anywhere and very easy to clean afterwards. Also great for woodwork and emulsion, highly recommended!

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersVery good brushes and excellent value for money.. These brushes are true to their word, no bristle loss as promised. Unlike other brushes I’ve bought recently I also found these so much easier to clean. I had previously purchased brushes which claim to be easy clean but these are far easier to clean than the ones that claim it, a good clean up meant they were perfect for use when I next used them. I have used with gloss paint and cleaned with white spirit and still in perfect conditio

Golden Review Award: 18 From Our UsersVery good value brushes. I’ve been using them for the past 4 days, decorating my kitchen and dining room, both with emulsion and gloss paints, and am very happy with the results. No bristle fallout whatsoever, no streaks in the paint. Overall very pleased.

Great brushes, I was a bit sceptical as I have had awful experiences with Coral rollers in the past but TBH these brushes are great! No loss at all after painting a 4 bedroom house using the two larger brushes! They were worn out after finishing the job though and will probably throw them away now as they are starting to bend in the middle from all the bushing… But, to paint the house without any brush hair loss, then throw away, they are perfect!

Golden Review Award: 26 From Our UsersI love these paint brushes. As a decorator quality is a must and these paint brushes meet that requirement. they lay the paint on really well and are really easy to clean too, especially with water based paints. The zero loss claim has also proved to be true. All in all a really nice
comfortable brush to use and I will have no hesitation in buying more. Highly recommended. AJ
