I had been using a three-tier steamer for many years and it still works fine. I put the potatoes and carrots in the bottom container with the lid on and then add the upper trays and other vegetables a bit later.
So why would I need to replace my perfectly good steamer with this much more expensive version? Firstly, I was a bit concerned that I was using the steamer every day and wondered whether it was safe to have food in contact with plastic long-term. Secondly, the plastic steamer needs rinsing straight away or the bits of vegetable stick fast and the whole thing is a pain to dry. Thirdly I was persuaded that steaming from above is quicker and gives greater evenness in cooking. Fourthly Amazon Wearhouse had a good offer.
I was relieved to find that the steamer was as new with no bits missing. Amazon Wearhouse is quite good for this; you are usually pleasantly surprised.
It took a bit of working out how to use it because the instructions were not the best. I tightened the bottom plug (attached to the base — not the water carrier) so there were no leaks removed the water carrier and filled it nearly to the max mark. I should say that you do need to be careful not to cross the thread on the water carrier; maybe unscrew till it engages before screwing. You fill it upside down so the max mark is near what will be the bottom. Then I inserted it into the back of the housing. When you do this the first time a considerable amount of water goes into the base. I always empty the tank after each use and would suggest emptying the base if you are going to be away for a while.
I should point out that the current version of the Cuisinart steamer does not have the range of cooking selections that are mentioned in other reviews. You can steam or re-heat, set the cooking time and pause the operation. That’s it. Nice and simple! I found the steam leaking into the kitchen was ok and maybe less than my previous steamer. It looks a very well-made product that should last for years.
For the first use I wanted to cook a salmon side with vegetables. I decided to cook the carrots potatoes and parsnips first and then keep them warm (I have one of those hostess things that is good at keeping things warm) whilst cooking the salmon with the green vegetables afterwards. I gave the root vegetables 20 mins but, perhaps because I like them in big chunks, they were a bit underdone. The next day I gave them 25 mins and they were fine. I gave the salmon and other vegetables 15 mins which was fine. In both cases I used the metal base rather than putting things directly into the glass dish. The salmon skin did stick to the metal base a bit, so it did take a bit of cleaning and left a residue that disappeared after I used it the following day. You are recommended to go through a complicated white vinegar cycle after cooking fish, but I didn’t bother and could not detect a fishy taste on the next meal which was a ratatouille with the vegetables part cooked in the steamer.
We do have a tiny kitchen and work surface is at a premium. We were only just able to get the steamer in our under-oven storage drawer. This was, for us, the main disadvantage of the purchase and looks like it will be ok. Bigness does have its advantages when there are more people to cater for and I think this unit could serve vegetables for six or more.
What can I say? It’s just awesome! And great for cooking lentils without blowing them apart! Might be a little tricky with the Black Baluga lentils, because they’re so small, but there are ways around that No, this is an excellent and well designed device!
Before buying this steamer, I did a lot of background checking and research – reading reviews etc. The more I read, the more impressed I became. In my house, we have always steamed our vegetables, but this steamer takes things to a new level. Every item cooked has been perfect and cooked within the time given in the handbook. What pleases us more is the potential for energy saving as we no longer need to use the hob. Keeping a pan of water simmering correctly meant keeping the ring setting on the hob at a fairly high level. With the Cuisinart, steaming is controlled perfectly. We are confident that when we make comparisons on our electricity bill, we shall see a positive difference in favour of this steamer.
Although the steamer is bulky, we have rearranged an area on our work surface which is fairly close to the hob. We have placed a tea towel over the steamer, to protect it and help keep the surface clean. We use glass hob covers, which allow the steamer to stand directly under the cooker hood. There is surprisingly little steam generated during cooking, when compared with using a saucepan and steamer inset.
Both my husband and I enjoy cooking and both agree that the Cuisinart has been a very good, but considered purchase for us.
I use it for 250g broccoli steamed 3 mins still crunchy. Also for eggs 6:00 steam followed by 5:30 / 6:00 keep warm setting depending on the season. Run the eggs under cold tap after and rinse couple times so it’s super easy to peel. Staple meal for me no dishes.
The only issue I have is that the timer only is set in 30second increments. 15s or 1s would be better. Bluetooth features would also be cool so I could switch to keep warm mode without leaving the couch or listen for the beep whilst listening to music or watching tv.
I would recommend only using distilled water in this steamer. Another good reason to have an RO filter for water. Never looked back.
The rack and trays all wash fine in the dishwasher and your food is barely if ever exposed to contacting plastic being heated up at high temperatures.
I’m sure this steamer saves energy compared to the gas hob as less heat lost.
That’s all I can think of for now. They don’t have much competition in this price range.
I’m new to steamers, and probably more excited about steaming as such at the moment, but this device has delivered on all expectations. It steams everything I want to steam without issues, it’s fast, it’s is easy to clean and it looks good.
It comfortably fits 500g of vegetables (probably you could put more in), which gives me a few meals ready for food prepping. It’s so easy, just chop it up and in a few minutes it’s done. Works fine also with frozen vegetables (I do 12minutes) which is even faster to prepare.
The only thing I didn’t expect that there is quite a bit of steam coming out of it so you want your (small) kitchen ventilated. I’m guessing all steamers do that?
Brilliant produc
So much better than my old stacking tefal model. Would highly recommend
Ridiculously good
Really love this machine, it steams food really quickly and doesn’t require any preheating. Size is alright, would have been nicer if it was taller. Really really easy to clean though, just throw everything into the dishwasher, and you’re done.
Excellent produc
Love the all glass chrome chrome steel finish , no plastic to leach into the food .
Nothing to not like , quick easy and looks good .
Why the negative reviews?
It’s expensive, but worth it if you want a well designed steamer to use regularly. The power lead is a little short, but other than that I ‘m very happy with it.
Steam from Above
Unlike many other similar appliances, this one steams from the above and hence prevent collection of dirty water onto the heating plate. The amount of steam is however less when compared to the case of steaming using a wok on a cooking hob. The rectangular container can enable steaming of fishes easier. I didn’t experience problem of a wrapping lid as pointed out by other reviewers. Cleaning by hand using detergent needs to be more careful with this all glass container and lid.
No features as displayed
Great product it does not give you the display as advertised a few people have mentioned it and they are correct disappointing as it’s not cheap it was there when I switched it on then disappeared. Ive used it 4 times this week for eggs , rice , potatoes, veg can’t fault it I cooked one of the recipes Chicken with Lemon &Lime one breast had been frozen and defrosted turned out tuff maybe because it had been frozen the other was fresh turned out very nice
Using it multiple times every day
SInce I’ve received it a few weeks back, I’ve used it at least twice a day. I didn’t realise it would be so great to cook fruits as well, making apple/pear/banana purees in less than 10 min. Very happy from the health perspective but also because I’ve been using my gas much less, which is great for the environment and my wallet. Strongly recommending.
Fed up with tier steamers but thoroughly pleased with my Cuisinart. The best steamer I have used and highly recommend it.
A great improvement over my previous multi tray plastic steamer. It is easy to use. It steams really well. I like that it is very easy to clean. Most importantly no drips! My old steamer always dripped when moving the lid or trays. This doesn’t.
I am glad it doesn’t have preprogrammed settings which are usually inaccurate as they don’t take into account weight or size. I like the simple timer. it makes it much easier to use. The display is very easy to read. My old steamer timer was hard to set up and the display was hard to read.
The plastic lid for one of the steel trays is about 2mm too small so doesn’t fit the tray but this is not really an issue as it works perfectly well balanced on top of the tray.
Overall I am really pleased with this steamer.
Perfec
So easy to use and clean, very fast to come to steam. Would buy again.
Quality solid produc
Delivered within 2 days of order. High quality product, very well built in every aspect. Works very efficiently. Easy to clean. Very pleased with produc
This steamer is the best i have ever had, but i am only giving 3 stars ( the easy to clean) as the stainless tray marks & leaves water marks, perhaps i am too fussy, but i think the stainless steel should wear better than it does. I would certainly buy another when the time comes to replace.
This product is well recommanded and well worth the money!
Really great Product, this product has a glass dish bottom and a glass lid with a stainless steel tray, it is perfect for cooking and steaming many different dishes, potatoes, vegetables and meats etc, we are so happy with this product that we plan to purchased another one! – it has a separate plastic container at the back for the cold water, which lifts out and refillable, (we use RO filtered water), this product is well recommanded and well worth the money!
Very happy with the product, just one thing which I was not sure about the lid doesn’t properly cover / close the steaming container.
Cuisinart professional glass steamer.
I’ve used mine so far every day since I’ve had it, I love it.
We love this steamer and would recommend to anyone. We chose it because it was the only one we could fund that has a glass (rather than plastic or metal) steaming container. It is easy to use and the top-down steam locks in the flavour unlike other steamers which steam from the bottom-up.
This is probably the most used piece of kit in our kitchen. We really like it and use it most days to steam some veggies. However, given its price, there are a few shortcomings that should not be there. Most obviously, and a major annoyance, is the separate container for cooking rice etc. It cooks/steams the rice perfectly, but after you use it once the lid will no longer fit as it warps slightly. I’ve had 2 replacement lids, but the same thing happens – so it’s no use for cooking rice unless you have use another container that fits. The water tank also leaks slightly at the bottom joint. Not so much water is dripping out, but enough so that limescale builds up. Not a serious issue, but one that shouldn’t occur given the price. Having said that, I’ll fight you if you try and take it away from me! We also got it on sale and saved a bundle.
Best ever steamer, fabulous
I’m coeliac and now suffers IBS it helped wonders. The materials are excellent they cable cord is not gigantic ( so many cords around with so many appliances.
Buy it you will thank me
Great steamer, good not to be cooking food in a plastic one.
Bit big, awkward to find storage space for it and struggle to fit it in the. dishwasher.
I am a Chinese and do a lot of cooking in steaming. This is a fantastic steamer! Easy to use and function just like any traditional steams we would use. Much better looking steamer for sure. Highly recommended if you have a spacious kitchen.
I researched steamers pretty extensively and this Cuisinart steamer was constantly thrown up in the search. I was thinking a steamer would be around 50 max, but after some thought, I decided to bite the bullet and buy this as it was glass rather than the cheap plastic usually used in these devices. Having looked at the Amazon reviews, I was a little put off buy the lower stars and lack of good reviews but just bought it anyhow.
I can honestly say this is the best kitchen appliance I’ve ever bought. It’s great quality and very substantial in weight. It cooks food to perfection and really does makes vegetables taste so much better. Add in the health benefits of steaming over roasting and boiling, then it’s clearly a winner.
I would absolutely recommend this steamer. It’s expensive, but buy cheap and buy twice! I’ve increased by vegetable consumption by around double without really thinking about it and I feel so much better for it.
Never tried a steamer before but this came highly recommended from a friend and they were right. It is so easy to cook using steam. I am a novice when it comes to cooking but even I could use this wonderful machine. Buy and enjoy !
