Lovely coffee
We love the machine…..now. It took us a while to work out how to use it properly as the instructions are not helpful. It takes a bit of ongoing maintenance, clearing out the ground s tray and water tray but not onerous.
Little bit noisy but you get used to it.
Makes Great Coffee
Easy to set up and use. Making adjustments is straightforward. The full manual has to downloaded as a pdf from the Internet, not an issue for me but might be for some people. So far so good
Perfect starter machine ⭐️
My husband and I love coffee and this is our first at-home coffee machine purchase. It’s really simple to use and instantly produces quality espressos and cappuccinos. It’s easy to clean and slim enough for our smaller kitchen. This is a great starter machine
Love this machine
Bought it recently with Black Friday deal.
Excellent coffee maker.
My favourite coffee is cappuccino and it serves the purpose well. Be aware it only does cappuccinos and espresso.
A bit complex to start and understand the instructions, but once you get it right- it’s easy from there on.
A bit noisy when grinding the beans but I guess most machines would be like that.
Sleek look and adds to the look of our kitchen/living area. On the whole I’m really enjoying this machine and would highly recommend it.
Easy to use. Easy to clean. Does not take up a lot of space. Most importantly produces fantastic coffee. It is worth downloading the PDF copy of the manual as it shows how to set water hardness – could not locate this in the paper version supplied. Recommended.
We had a DeLonghi coffee maker for 9 years but it finally stopped working after a huge amount of use. This model arrived in 24 hours and was well packaged. It was easy to set up and is an improvement on the previous version with easy-to-use controls, easily accessible areas for water and coffee beans and rapid heating. After the first few cups, it settled down to make excellent cups of coffee every time. The frothing facility is very good. We are very pleased with the machine which seems excellent value for money.
Finally after many coffee machines I have found one that does the job. Perfect coffee every time. The milk is so easy to do it is thick and frothy every time. The machine measure out the amount of coffee you need you just turn the dial to indicate how strong you want it and it uses much less coffee I was getting through so much with my previous machines. It tells you when you need to refill water and empty coffee and tray so no stop starting when you’re half way through making a coffee. Whatever beans I use, expensive or shops own, the coffee tastes smooth and top class and I am a bit of a coffee snob so that’s a big deal for me. This machine was so reasonable in price if you just want a decent coffee with no fuss this is the machine for you.
I have De’Longhi Corsa at home which must be 5 years old so I already knew their machines are robust. The kitchen in my business is a busy place and I wanted a been to cup machine to give my consulting-room clients and my own staff the luxury of a good coffee on demand. I am very impressed with the new machine. It delivers a hotter coffee than my old one ever did, it is easier to keep clean and it somehow uses less beans to still deliver a first-rate coffee every time. We use the ground coffee feature daily so the odd-bods who want to drink decaf can satisfy their wants. It is easy to learn how to use (I just have a note above about switching back from ground to bean and the rest is intuitive enough). I do the descaling flush when required, give it a good clean at the same time and then just keep it topped-up with water, beans and empty its tray several times a day. It looks good, makes a great coffee (subject to the beans you buy) and helped me sweeten putting my charges up to my clients! This is a 100% recommendation.
Value for money
Please do not underestimate this coffee machine. I am impressed with this, especially since I own a Jura that costs me 2000, and they produce both produce excellent taste espresso. The only difference is the Magnifica costs nine times cheaper.
Settings of the Magnifica need a few youtube lessons; after 3 most important settings on the machine, every cup of espresso is heavenly, (grinding set to 3, Temperate set to the 4th light, Coffee set to 90% strong).
The only fallback is the splatter and I would suggest buying the black colour version.
Perfect bean to cup
This is a perfect bean to cup coffee machine. Nothing fancy but everything you need at am affordable price.
Only downside is keeping it clean. Does get a bit messy.
Still making coffee ten years late
I was looking through my old Amazon purchases for something else when I noticed that I bought this coffee machine exactly ten years ago (The price back then was 248).
It’s made 4-6 mugs of coffee practically every day during that time, with no maintenance other than hoovering out the stray ground coffee and a flush every two months and . Speaking of which, you do know that you don’t need to by the sachets of DeLonghi cleaning stuff, don’t you? Any coffee machine cleaning solution will do.
It can use ground coffee also through a hatch in the top of the machine, but don’t do it – it’s a messy nightmare
Overall This is a great coffee machine – don’t hesitate to buy one. And if anyone from DeLonghi is reading, hit me up about an upgrade 😉
Does a job
Once you have the grind set up, and worked out how you like your coffee, and chosen the right beans, it just makes life a breeze. One less chore 3x per day, every cup the same. Keep up the cleaning and descaling or you’ll get in trouble.
10 Years & Going Strong . . .
I bought one of these machines in January 2012 and it’s become an essential part of our lifestyle. I would not be without it. We follow the cleaning guidance and will definitely buy another of these machines when our current one bites the dust.
The best thing ever!
How have I not had one of these before! Love love love it! If you like coffee you’ll love this machine. It’s easy to use with push button operation, I avoided the digital one due to poor reviews. A little noisy but nothing too bad, grinds the coffee, brews it, self cleans before operation and when you switch off (automatic switch off after 15 minutes). Easy to fill the water container which just slides out. The waste coffee is dropped into a container which is part of the drip tray, easy to empty and clean. I have not tried steaming milk yet as I drink my coffee black. Waiting for my latte loving daughter to visit! Would definitely recommend
A great product , produced in Europe and it does what it say's on the tin! superbly well.
It makes very good coffee from the beans. There are a variety of programs to chose from to suit your taste in coffee. It can do two at a time but we found if you want to add hot milk then we produced that on the cooker as the machine takes a tad too long. Otherwise I felt this machine for the price was excellent.
Compact, easy to use, most important - great coffee.
I have had the machine two months. I use beans. After a bit of trial and error I got the grind and quantity to suit my taste and also temperature hot enough. The quality of the brew is excellent. Controlling quantity is easy enough and with the adjustable spouts you can raise the assembly to use a regular coffee mug, and lower it for a small espresso cup. The footprint was a deciding factor as I don’t have a big work surface, and it fits nicely.
A few niggles. 1) A transparent cover for the bean hopper would be useful to see when it needs topping up to avoid running out in mid-grind. 2) The container for the coffee grounds has to be emptied after 5 or 6 grinds which is more frequent than my old machine – 20 plus. 3) Nooks and crannies make it a bit fiddly to clean out inside, particularly since this has to be done from the front rather than side access.
One other thing: the outlet from the water reservoir dripped when I first got it, but this stopped after a few days, I suppose the seal swelled in contact with water once in use.
However, the quality of the brew is what counts: it is good machine and I would recommend it.
Great coffee
Use this with Lavazza Blue beans. Although it’s an expensive machine, it has more than paid for itself as no longer using coffee shops and takeaways.
I now make a travel mug full with lactose free milk and reheat in a microwave. The lactose free milk doesn’t form a skin and still tastes fresh when reheated.
Hmmm coffee at half the price☕️
Great coffee machine, took a few goes (days) to get the the right flavour and aroma and when you get there it’s great, then you just have work on the cup fill rate, I tend to jump from a cup to a mug.
Don’t be tempted to use cheap coffee beans, experiment with different brands and you’ll find the perfect coffee.
Fantastic coffee machine
After reading all the reviews for this bean to cup coffee machine, we decided to take the plunge and buy it. So happy we did it produces a fantastic coffee and cappuccino.
The grinder is not as noisy as I had expected. The secret to keeping this machine in good order is to keep flushing and ensuring you clean the machine after each use.
Great Coffee, but not perfec
It took a a while to get a coffee I liked to go with this machine, but now I have (Lavazza Expresso Barista) it makes great coffee, which is all that should matter?
Minor downsides:
* The warning lights don’t make it obvious what it needs sorting.
* To change any of the default settings (auto switch off time, water temp, descale interval, etc.) I always have to go to YouTube to go through the steps as the supplied instructions are not clear.
* Use the ground coffee chute for Decaf, but wasted a fair bit at first because the filter unit was in the wrong place – until you get used to it!
* Can run out of water half way through a cup and the only way to fill the cup is to use the kettle
I can live with these irritants as I really like the coffee!
A real coffee
My wife and I have been talking about a real coffee machine for some time so 400 later it arrived we chose one of the DeLonghi mid to upper range models and yes its brilliant a real cup of coffee at last, it’s easy to operate with very few knobs to worry about, it’s not silent especially grinding the coffee beans but that doesn’t take more than a few seconds so all good and the coffee produced is great and tastes great so fresh coffee every morning absolutely wonderful.
Go get one your self it’s great.
A great Upgrade
I am basing this review on a comparison with my previous machine, the Magnifica ESAM 4200.S
Other reviewers have said this machine is noisy but it is so much quieter than its predecessor. The start up sounds are quieter, the grinding is quieter and the dispensing is quieter. The steamer still ‘screams’ occsaionally, but only occasionally rather than most times.
It is much simpler, with coffee volumes pre-set, so you know you always get the same amount, instead of turning a dial.
The steamer heats up a little quicker but a great improvement is that you can switch from steamer back to coffee instantly without having to wait several minutes. This means you can make each coffee individually rather than having to make all the espressos before steaming the milk if there are several people having coffee.
The grounds tray is a better configuration and there is virtually no spillage compared to the ESAM 4200.S. I used to have to sweep grounds out of the base of the old machine – not any more.
There was criticism, in other reviews, of the clarity of the instructions. I found them quite understandable when standing in front of the machine and following the set up instructions in sequence. For example, the steamer light flashing is explained and turning the steamer on and off resolves it. The ‘little red plug’ mentioned in one review as being absent from the instructions is, in fact, included and is the condenser outlet for the steamer. The manual just doesn’t say that it is red!!
Remembering to empty the drip tray and grounds container at the same time is no hardship as I did that anyway and I especially like the fact that the drip tray is black – the old, grey, one got stained very easily and had difficult to clean nooks & crannies in it. This one is much easier to clean.
I also like the option for different standby periods before it automatically switches off. Very useful to be able to change it if you want it to stay on longer for any reason.
Yes, the descaling light does seem to come on quite frequently, but I live in a hard water area and use the machine several times a day so am happy with that. The interval can be reset for different water hardness or, as previous reviewers/comments have said, you can just run plain water through it alternate times!!
TL:DR:
It is more compact than the ESAM 4200.S, quieter and makes a better, more consistent cup of coffee. Cleaning it is no more complicated and it comes with clear instructions (if you follow them properly).
It is a great improvement on the previous model and I am very happy with it!
Great machine for a great price
This Bean to Cup coffee machine is excellent – there are more expensive ones out there but if you like the bean to cup experience for an affordable price you won’t be disappointed – get it and it’s excellent quality too! Use it every day throughout the day and it’s grea
Great machine!
I really like this bean to cup machine, At Christmas I decided to buy a new one, to replace our 6 year old machine which is still working fine. We could not be happier.
The one thing to maintain the machine, is at least once a year, I grease the 3 orange, O rings. with food grade silicon grease. I hope it helps.
Must buy
I bought this for my other half who is a real coffee lover. He has an industrial one for the caf he owns and has been through several smaller ones for home… He says this is the best one out of all of them…. The only thing I would say is now I have to get him to stop using it so much
Great Service
I bought this coffee machine 22 months ago and it provided many perfect cups of coffee until something broke inside. I thought I was going to have a struggle to get it fixed but I contacted Delonghi, they arranged for it to be picked up and they returned it 3 days later in perfect working order. 10 out of 10 for prompt service. Thank you for the 2 year warranty
Instant fix!
I’ve never owned a proper coffee machine before but I decided to treat myself. It’s very easy to use, and produces consistently good coffee at the push of a button. The milk frothed works well, it’s easy to empty the grounds and refill the beans and the water. I’ve only tried it with beans so I don’t know how well it works with ground coffee but overall I’m really happy with it.
A great bean to cup machine for those starting out on the coffee journey.
We bought this machine to replace an aging Nespresso machine. Having been used to Nespresso for a number of years now we were worried about the quality and taste of the coffee from a new purchase. We needn’t have bothered because from the word go, with a little bit of tweaking we got great coffee delivered to the cup as easily as the Nespresso machine. We like strong coffee so it is adjusted well up on the scale and the beans are ground fairly fine. This gives us great results at a fraction of the price of the Nespresso capsules. That’s a win-win for me. If you’re thinking of making the leap To a bean to cup machine, then this is an excellent place with which to start.
Simple easy to use
Great values for coffee to cup machine, love the milk steamer. I can make creamy lattes or cappuccinos.
Simple to use, cant go wrong with this coffee machine. No plastic waste either.
If you can’t get coffee out of i
I found the instructions suboptimal: rather obscure diagrams, the parts list separate from the diagrams so you have to flick between, and no guide to one problem which occurred. But I persevered and am really enjoying the coffee now!
So for anyone struggling with the same thing: if the coffee isn’t coming at all, make sure that the dial on the top right hand corner facing you (the one near the frothy/spouty tap widget) is turned anti-clockwise.
Also, if the red “grounds” light keeps going on even after you’ve cleaned out the coffee grounds, make sure that you take out the tray with the coffee grounds in it whilst the machine is turned on- apparently, if you don’t, the sensor isn’t ever activated, so that the machine believes that the grounds tray is still full.
But it makes good coffee every morning and I’m pleased with it, a month into ownership.
ice
easy to work and clean.. A nice cup of coffee but not strong enough for me.. Partner loves it though
Value for the money
Well after one month using it, I can say that this machine is as good as any other more espensive… Temperature is perfect… Extraction could be better.. But using good coffee can mask it… You don’t need anything more sofisticated or colourfull lcd panel.. Saving your profile would be only feature I miss. Save couple of hundreds pounds
choosing this one, you will be not dissapointed. Easy to clean and to use. Makes very good coffee.
Overall, pretty impressed
Previously we’d been using the De’Longhi Espresso machine ECO310 for about eight years. No complaints, just a pain having to grind a bag every week and keep it in the fridge. This Magnifica S is so much better, although it took several attempts to get the strength etc. right.
The only bugbear is the steam wand, which is nowhere near as powerful as our previous machine.
Overall though, very impressed.
Having the ability to choose your own fresh coffee beans and grind them is a great advantage over pod style machines like tassimo, the taste is so much better and so you can get lovely expresso with a nice crema from this machine which then allows you to make other styles of coffee. The milk frother also allows you to make nice cappuccino, albeit it is difficult to get microbubbles for that style of coffee where you would like to create latte art. This may just require some practice on my part, I have read that removing the panarello from the frother helps. What left me slightly disappointed though was the devices ability to make a cup of normal hot black Americano, I sort of expected to be able to hit a button and have a big cup of hot coffee but to me it just doesn’t feel hot enough, the taste is fine but it lacks the heat. I did adjust the settings to make the device as hot as possible, also rinsed the cup in hot water first. I tried filling the cup with hot water from the steam spout and then dropping in an expresso, but while it may be hot enough for some, I feel it isn’t hot enough for me, to get this style of coffee I boil the kettle first and then drop a double expresso into the cup of water. I think this is always going to be an issue with most types of coffee machines at this size, coffee needs to be made at a certain temperature (not boiling) and unless there is a separate boiler in the device for hot water it isn’t going to be roasting hot.
Cappuccino is very good because u can steam milk to your desired temperature, I feel this is an advantage over the auto milk frothing machines.
The devices double expresso and double long coffee buttons just doubles the amount of hot water sent through the single dosage of ground coffee so for me I find you need to have the coffee power dial set to max for this for each cup to get enough strength. You can program the amount of water used by holding the button untill it starts then tapping it again to stop.
To me the device is mainly an Automated expresso machine/coffee grinder all in one, it does away with having to grind coffee in a separate device and measure out coffee in a filter holder, it does this all for you and it is very good at that. Overall I’d still recommend it because I don’t think any other devices at this price range are any better. (300 black Friday deal) I made the mistake of buying a big 600ml milk carafe, I think a 350ml one would suit this machines spout better and produce better milk foam. REVISED… IVE FOUND A HACK! pour hot water from the spout then steam it, it raises the water temperature, then drop in an expresso for a great Americano!

Best purchase in lockdow
Great coffee machine for the money, no wonder it has a high number of excellent reviews. Only thing it lacks for me is a pro wand for creamy stretched milk. But with the frother off then you can get it pretty close. Simple, easy to use and clean. Good tip to adjust the water hardness as they have this turned up from the factory to force you to descale each month. Which it should not need.otherwise love it and had it over a year now
Super coffee make
Been after a coffee machine for ages and so glad I decided to get one, and this one is perfect I’m now having Lattes as good as the coffee shops make. Trialing different beans to find ones I prefer. Easy set up if I can work it then anyone can. Recommend this machine.
Very easy to use and a great bean to cup
After doing my research I picked this bean to cup espresso machine and so far I am very happy with it. Simple instructions which are quick to understand and to set the machine up for use. I like milky coffees and this makes them very well indeed. My wife like espressos and both of us are satisfied with its production. No louder than a pod machine, and quick to produce a lovely hot cup of coffee. The milk wand is also great to use and makes that lovely soft floating milk on top of the coffee . This is my 1st bean to cup machine and I am so glad I bought it.
Great coffee made easy.
I’ve had a coffee machine before that took the pods which can be limiting if you fancy trying different types of coffee. So when it started acting up I decided to take the plunge and buy a “bean to cup” coffee machine. This Delonghi Magnifica S was reduced in price when I bought it, but the main reason for this model was all the great reviews. I watched lots of videos on youtube to get more of an idea what might be involved with ease of use and cleaning etc, so when it arrived I felt a bit more prepared. You must read the instructions on the correct setup, such as doing a water hardness test with the supplied test strip and setting the machine accordingly. The instructions do say that the first 5 cups of coffee you make will not be great so I just threw those away. I advise buying the small 250g bags of coffee beans to try it out until you find a particular brand you enjoy the most. Yes it will be trial and error but I have still enjoyed the coffee I have made so far. I like a cappuccino myself and I was a little worried about frothing the milk but it is actually really easy with this machine. I did buy the Delonghi 350ml stainless steel milk jug and I think the shape helps with getting the froth right. There is a dial on the front of this machine which alters the strength of the coffee and again it’s just a case of trying, to find the setting that suits you. There is more to cleaning this machine than my old pod machine, but I knew that going in, and it will need descaling every so often but the instructions are straightforward. It’s early days with this coffee machine, but already I am pleased with the results and I know it will be even better once I find the beans I prefer.
A good cup of coffee
This machine produces a good cup of coffee. I would like it just a little stronger than it is at present but hopefully between stronger beans and changes in the settings I will be able to sort this ou
Love coming down in the morning for a fresh brew? Then you will fall in love with this beautiful and easy to use machine.
Only used the whole bean so far and can say I’m so impressed. The noise of the beans been ground transports you to a coffee shop and the smell and taste are just heavenly.
Instructions come through in a pretty simple way although I’m very grateful to you for showing the descale routine.
Oh when you order this I suggest you get the de scaler with it. Trust me, you will get hooked on fresh coffee and won’t want to be left without because you haven’t got the de scaler.
Happy coffee
Great tasting coffee from a great looking machine
The machine looks really good. Making coffee using the machine could not be more simple. Once loaded with beans it is no more than choosing the type of drink, cappuccino or espresso, and the size of drink, one or two. The actual amount of coffee dispensed can be changed if your cup is larger or smaller than usual. Simply press the button and 30 seconds later its done. Frothing the milk is just a easy. Great taste, hot coffee and no mess. Oh, and unlike me previous machine, it’s very quiet when operating.
Nice, easy machine, good results
We do like this particular coffee machine.
3 years ago paid over twice as much for our broken machine which, although had bells and whistles never did give good results and the drawers / trays were awkward to access.
This one has all at the front and froths so much better.
The single serve decaf facility is great.
Reasonable price
A great coffee machine at this price our only problem was the Java beans we enjoy where far to oily for the machine so required pushing towards the grinder a bit difficult due to the grill/guard in place for safety reasons so all in all good product but use medium roast dryer beans
Good Coffee and adaptable
So it took me ages to buy a new coffee machine. Mainly because the reviews always include comments like the coffee was too weak or too cold. Anyway, I read the instructions – more accurately my wife read that out to me as I didn’t have my reading glasses, but that’s kind of irrelevant. It took about 15 mins to go through the start-up process until we got the part to make coffee.
The first coffee was too small,
The second coffee was too weak,
The third coffee was just right….
So it comes down to experimenting. After about 5 goes with the strength and amount controls we got a strong americano coffee for my wife which she was very pleased with. It was hot enough, strong enough and by hitting the two cups option, had enough coffee to fill a large sized coffee mug.
We moved onto the milk steamer. It took a few goes to get the milk like I wanted it (I usually order a wet latte in a coffee shop). Fiddled with the coffee controls a little more and now I get a brilliant latte. I’m using a well known coffee store bean and I can’t really tell the difference between the coffee shop and the machine.
This is good! Will it stay good? I hope so, this was a bit of an investment for me so I’m hoping the machine will work for a good long while.
We haven’t changed the temperature settings, nor the grinding wheel and have left these to their defaults so far. So yes, good machine….
ESAM 420 De'longhi Magnifica
My 25 year old Gagia Tebe coffee machine finally gave up and a friend had this machine and recommended it to me and I’m very grateful as it’s an excellent bean to cup coffee machine. I’m now drinking more black coffee as I find the flavour even though the beans are the same better from this machine. I notice Amazon keep altering the price from about 280 to 350, so I would wait till the price comes down. Excellent bean to cup coffee machine, if I needed another machine I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another.
Very impressed
Only had this machine 48Hrs!
Cons: manual is absolute rubbish. Bin it. Go on Youtube, and there’s a couple of instructional videos there – well worth a visit! PLEASE ensure you look at these before starting the machine up; this will ensure a quick start and quality coffee. The milk frother is a little slow, however it produces a *great* foam.
But…
I’m no coffee expert, but this produces nothing like I’ve had before – I’ve gone through many machines over the years.
To get going, you will need to fine tune it – which is easy. Fill her up, put the beans in and time a delivery of 2 x espressos. 20 – 25 seconds is the optimum. Adjust the grinder settings but please do this when the machine is running!
I’ve done some ‘coffee’, espressos, Latte, Cappuccino.. all with great results without adjusting anything. I have not used the dispenser for ground coffee yet, so can’t comment on that.
Easy to clean, the drip and grounds trays are easily removable and easy to rinse out.
Cannot comment on its longevity, as I’m 48 hrs in; I took out extended insurance as well, just in case.
5 stars. Simples. Buy one.
We had been using the Magnifica ESAM 4200.S for about 4 years, but it developed a fault. Had to decide between returning for repair or buying a new one, and opted to replace it with this model. So glad we did as, happy as we were with the old one, this one is smaller, less noisy and makes better coffee. We used pretty much the exact same settings as before but find the coffee richer, and stronger. Also you can get a greater volume in the cup – you set it to however full you want it whereas the old one had a max volume which was only about two thirds of a cup (we use it for Americano). So yes – very happy with it.

Also you can get a greater volume in the cup – you set it to however full you want it whereas the old one had a max volume which was only about two thirds of a cup (we use it for Americano). So yes – very happy with it.
It’s easy to use, especially if you had another DeLonghi expresso machine before. If not, you will need the manual to do the settings. The coffee is good and strong but I’m using lavazza coffee beans. I don’t know if it’s the same with regular coffee beans or ground coffee.
It is a bit noisy. Easy enough to clean. Even easier to scratch the surfaces when cleaning the tray and refill the water tank. All in one, good coffee machine but far from perfect.
My wife bought me a Nespresso machine because sometimes I haven’t time to prepare a proper coffee. However the pods were too expensive. So we got this. It is compact, heats up very quickly, is easy to set up and adjust the grind and things. I’ve tried to encourage my wife to enjoy coffee other than a cafeteria but she couldn’t be persuaded until we got this. When I showed her where to put her finger, she was hooked. Press the on button….wait….press the shot button…..done. Excellent.
Got this machine after reading the positive reviews and talking to a friend who has owned one for 2 years. I’m very pleased with it. Does exactly what it says and makes an excellent espresso and varieties of coffee styles. As with all things coffee it really does come down to the beans. I won’t promote any beans as it’s all down to taste and you really do have to experiment with roast, single origins and blends to find ones you like. The machine really is easy, you get a measuring scoop for ground coffee if that’s your thing and a packet of liquid descale in the box. As previously said the written instructions are sparse but there are good tutorials on YouTube to follow. The machine comes preset for grind and water temp but these can be easily adjustable. Similarly the water hardness is set to 4 (hard water) but there is a strip enclosed to check the water in your area and it is simple to change. Changing the grind is simple but remember the machine must be grinding beans when you do and you should only move 1 per time, it’ll probably take another couple of coffees before you notice any change in strength. Finer grind gives a stronger coffee but too fine and with some beans the machine will choke and no coffee will come out. The grinder is not silent but isn’t any louder than a pod machine. Cleaning is simple, everything pulls out and clicks back into place. I use filtered water but I think as long as you do the descale when recommended doesn’t matter what water you use. A single or double shot Americano delivers 120ml, this can be adjusted easily to your preferred size (YouTube explains how) or top up from the kettle or use the frothing wand which also delivers hot water. Remember to pop a cup under the nozzles when switching on or off as the machine cleans itself with hot water. You could let it run into the drip tray though. Oh and the red plastic thing in the drip tray floats up through the drip tray holes as it fills up telling you when to empty.
I really do recommend this machine and can’t see why you would want one of the really expensive ones in a domestic setting, it delivers a great espresso with a thick velvet crema. I left the machine on factory settings and get approximately 120 espressos from a 1kg bag of coffee beans, depending on the Roaster it’s about 14p a cup for a 17 kilo bag of beans.
Good quaffing 🙂

Excellent - 4 coffees a day for the last 3 years
I have this coffee machine for over 3 years. It has made at least 4 coffees a day since then and has always worked as expected. Well worth it.
One unexpected advantage is how clean it is, no mess. Before when making coffee I’d always spill some on the counter, but with this machine it takes care of all that, for that alone it’s worth it.
The coffee tastes great, I’d often put two shots in a mug to have it a bit stronger.
I clean it with the de-scaler about once a year (not a problem where I live).
I don’t use the steamer, and I suspect it’s not very powerful, but doesn’t bother me.
Great investment.
Compact Machine
This was a replacement for our old Perfecta machine which we had had for a long time We were a bit dubious about whether the new machine’s compact size would impact on the efficiency of the machine and quality of the coffee, but so far we are very pleased with the coffee it produces. One downside is that the setting for bean strength is a manual dial, it doesn’t have numbered settings so it takes a while to find your preferred setting. It is quieter than our old machine and the more compact size means it looks less obtrusive on the worktop. Flavour obviously depends on the beans used and the type of coffee you like.
does what it says in descriptio
I have not had a coffee machine before and researched thoroughly before settling on this one in another retailer. Saw it on Amazon lightening deals at a much reduced price – no deal.
Extremely pleased with our choice and use it everyday. Can swop between regular and decaff beans easily .
Easy to clean and descale. Was a bit concerned as read that some people had the descale light continuing to flash even after they had descaled but we have not had that problem – so far.
All in all very satisfied.
My only complaint is the delivery – the item apparently was “Damaged” so not delivered on the date expected, I had to contact Amazon to ask what had happened. The assistant was very helpful and a replacement was delivered within 2 days.
Fantastic machine - many ways to tailor your coffee to your own taste
This is a really good machine with a number of good features that others have already listed in their reviews (granularity of the grind, cup size, coffee strength per cup, water temperature etc.) I’ve always used an espresso machine with pre-ground coffee (which, incidentally, you can still use in this machine) and have never previously used a bean-to-cup. The quality of the finished product is seriously improved! The crema it produces is excellent and I genuinely think it tastes better than top coffee shop coffee once you get your own combination of settings just right. It’s also a time saver if you’re used to filling, tamping then cleaning a manual espresso maker. For anyone interested in what type of machine to expect with an Amazon Warehouse Deal – you can probably ignore all the ‘large scratch front, small scratch side’ etc. I’ve had two and neither had any scratches at all despite the description. One had instructions and one didn’t. However, my first one leaked water everywhere each time I made a coffee but Amazon were brilliant and refunded me immediately so I just ordered another one (Warehouse again) and it’s perfect!
Great value Bean to cup
I would imagine if you’re really into coffee, practiced a whole lot and got a nice manual espresso machine. Took time to dial it in, you could probably make a better cup of coffee.
However that’s not what this is for. Out the box, beans in, this makes a great espresso with almost no effort. And it’s not nearly as expensive as some.
Highly recommend. Good product.
Damn fine coffee machine
I bought this to replace the earlier model, the basic Magnifica ESAM. This is definitely an improvement, and the coffee is excellent. Gripes first – the ESAM had a lip around the drip tray which reduced splashing, the ECAM drip tray is flush so if there is a spillage, it overflows. Secondly, there is no separate control for size of drink. You get small or large, single or double. Having said those two things, there are a number of improvements. The ESAM used to clog up and required regular cleaning and sweeping out of wet grounds, this is much cleaner and easier to access key parts. Setting up is quicker (although, as others have noted, there is no Ph strip supplied for testing water hardness) and easier. And the coffee is really good, I generally use Lavazza Red beans. Not tried descaling yet, but overall am very impressed with this machine.
Great for a novice barista
As a novice to the world of coffee machines I just wanted something that was simple to operate, would make a quality cup of coffee/mocha, and wasn’t too irksome to maintain. This meets those criteria admirably and as a bonus also looks good in our kitchen. The only pain is descaling which takes a while but only has to be done once a month. All in all very pleased, albeit I have nothing to compare it against.
And it still works perfectly. I have looked after it, descaling it when required, using filters etc, but no complaints. Still makes a great hot coffee to my liking. I can have the beans ground as finely as I like.
I have only owned it for a couple of days so cannot comment on reliability etc BUT I love it! The instructions seem complicated but in actual fact it’s pretty fool proof. My first coffee out of it is in image 1. The coffee strength needed some adjustment but my third coffee, a triumph of a latte seen in image 2. We love extra hot coffees in this household and the machine is capable of delivering hot coffee and the milk frother will get the milk as hot as you like. Machine has self cleaning features which are useful. Water tank is easy to fill, coffee grounds container is large and easy to empty. Delonghi, you have created a fab machine which will save me a fortune by not going to the two leading coffee shop brands where we could spend 200 per month. This machine will soon pay for itself. I would highly recommend it.

Fantastic machine, takes both ground and beans make maverlous coffee, milk frother is amazing.
Easy to clean the only slight problem is the water tray fills up quite quickly because it self cleans everytime it starts and when it switches off.
Not cheap but worth the money
Great value, reliable first bean-to-cup machine
I spent a HUGE amount of time researching machines before finally opting for the Magnifica S. For me, it gave the best mix of features v cost as I didn’t want to spend more than about 450. It’s also fairly slim so doesn’t take up tons of room on the worktop.
Everyone has different requirements and I think doing some research about what you NEED in a machine versus what’s nice to have is a sensible way of not spending more than you need to. By all accounts, most if not all, of the De Longhi machines use the same basic grinding and brewing system. Therefore, the differentiating points between each machine start to become about how “automatic” you want it to. The Magnifica S is probably best suited if you regularly only drink espressos or Americanos, as I do. The milk steamer wand is fine for the occasional latte or cappuccino but if these are your drink of choice, perhaps spending a few quid more on a model with a built-in milk container and the facility to automatically add milk to the espresso could be worth thinking about.
Watch outs? Not many. It takes a bit of fiddling around to get the right adjustment of strength, using the bean grinding adjustment and the dosage adjustment. You can adjust how hot the coffee is, but even on the hottest setting I’m having to drink it faster than I might like. I make Americanos mainly, and although you can add hot water from the steam spout, I never find it’s quite enough either, so end up boiling the kettle.
Other than that, it’s perfect for me. If you live in a hard water area, buy a filter to shove in the water tank, although you’ll still be amazed how often the machine is asking for you to descale it!
Descaling instructions are misleading. Good otherwise.
I have had this almost three years and the coffee is good. I don’t know much about the milk frothing because we only drink espresso. The reviewer who commented on the descaling is spot on – we use water from a water softener. There is a setting for the water hardness and I set it to minimum. The machine still told me it needed descaling after a few months and I used the sachet that came with it. A year later it warned me again and I put it through a descaling cycle without any agent. It worked fine. Now I’m just going to ignore the next one. As the man said, it’s like an inkjet printer making you buy more consumables at the manufacturer’s price.
Cleaning is a bit of a chore but you don’t need to do it very often.
One more thing – the water used to heat the cups isn’t quite hot enough so I boil a kettle to make them hotter.
Otherwise it’s a great machine and I hope it lasts a long time.
it takes time to get the bes
For the money it is a reasonable machine. Out of the box it did not work, I had to phone DeLonghi and talk to an engineer to go through a sequence that reset the logic so it would work. Not difficult but the help number they give you in the box is out of service so a search on the internet was needed to find a number for their service department. After a few minutes of covid announcements I was eventually put through, chap who answered was very good. Very helpful and would not end the call until he was sure I was happy. It then takes quite a few wasted coffees to get to the exact settings that you need for the flavour and crema you want. I have invested in a separate grinder so I can have some different flavour and strength options, the built in hopper for the built in grinder is not convenient for anything other than you daily usual beans. The milk steamer is not at all brilliant, it heats the milk but I have yet to achieve a decent froth for a cappuccino. All in all a good competent machine, but not one for a serious barista.
As I was buying my first bean to cup, I had 3 requirements –
1 – Not too expensive
2 – Great coffee
3 – Easy to use/looks good
The delonghi Magnifica S ticks all boxes.
I didn’t want to spend too much on my first bean to cup, so chose the Magnifica S. Its also so easy to use, once you have completed the initial set up, you just select your cup size (espresso/long) I use the 2 cup long option for a full mug of coffee. The coffee is really good and always has a good crema. I like strong black coffee, but you can easily select the strength and latte’s are very easy to make. The machine itself is compact and easily fits in my kitchen.
I did read all comments which had 3 stars and below, I have not experienced any problems at the moment. It does use water to clean itself, but I’m happy with this, as I don’t need to do it. It isn’t excessively noisy – and comes with a UK plug. I did pinch one recommendation, and do put a cup under the spout to catch the water as it cleans the machine.
The machine lets you know when to fill the water tank, empty the used coffee and drip tray and descale.
1 month of using the Magnifica S and I’m really happy with it. I’ve had to descale it once – but this is what I’d normally expect.

I have always wanted a bean to cup coffee maker but thought they were very expensive, complicated and massive! I had a pod machine which was good but expensive to use . My sister bought this machine in Switzerland and brought it back to UK as she would get more use out of it. She demonstrated it to me and I was sold. I did some research and this was the best price I could find. I ordered it and it was delivered a couple of days later. The machine is very easy to set up and whilst there is some noise when the beans are being ground, overall the machine is not a great deal noisier than the pod machine. It is quite compact which I am pleased about. There is the ability to make one or two coffees – I tend to use the two long coffees setting which provides a good mug full of coffee. The milk frother is a lovely addition and works very well. I can easily convince myself that I am sitting in a cafe having a latte or cappuccino ( except I am not paying 3 per cup! ) The machine will pay for itself in no time!!! I would have no hesitation in recommending this coffee machine. I love it!

Easy to use
This is a good machine for the price and is easy to use. I would say it prioritises ease of use over quality of coffee which is a compromise I was willing to make. I don’t have time to learn all the skills of a barrister and I just want relatively good coffee at home.
One thing I would say is that I think the grind size could do with being able to go smaller. To get a full extraction I ended up setting it at its finest and using a fair quantity of water, which isn’t ideal. That said, I don’t really know what I’m talking about (refer to my previous comment about not having time to be a barrister).
Overall, it works for me and I have a nice, quick and easy cup of coffee every morning with minimum hassle and cost.
Good enough but...
This machine is compact for a bean to cup one, it looks tidy and after 7 months has proved easy to use and clean, though descaling has been a bit of an issue. More later.
It took me a while to find a blend and strength of coffee I was happy with but it’s now ok, although set almost at max settings for grind, (just below 1 on the dial) at 3.o’clock for coffee volume and 11.o’clock for water level/strength. If I wanted any stronger a flavour, not sure where I’d go other than to venture into stronger roast.
Other reviewers have commented on the noise. It is noisy and I’m not sure why it is so bad. Some of it seems to be material and construction which exacerbates the grind and infusion noise.
In this household, it’s predecessor was also a DeLonghi, Prima Donna costing 3 times as much. It made a far superior cup in my view but as it did not live very long (4 years, is that a good life for an 800 coffee machine?) I decided to try this less expensive model. Its doing alright. For the money I’d call it a good buy.
On the descaling I have found the instructions less than helpful. completed the task twice now and neither time did the process work as instructed nor take 30 mins as advised. Neither does it go “perform a series of rinses and pauses to remove limescale…” but pumps the cleaner through twice only before coming to a stop a) before the water tank is actually empty and b) within about 5-10 mins max. In fact the water tank cannot empty because the water outlet is necessarily above the bottom of the tank and therefore cannot drain the bottom. This also confused me initially on the actual rinsing process. The instructions say “When the tank is completely empty the descaling light goes out.” It doesn’t completely empty and in my case the light does not go out. “The water jug light, cup lights and steam lights flash.” In my case they all came on and stayed on. Confused again, I waited a few minutes and then turned the steam knob back to zero (as instructed). The machine then switched off as it was supposed to. Anyone else had this experience?
Amazing, get one if you like coffee
I had a Nespresso machine for years, it was ok but ended up just sitting on the worktop in the kitchen. Then a few months ago I tried one of the stove top machines, Godmorn Stovetop Espresso Maker, Italian Coffee Maker Moka Pot, this made nice coffee, but it wasn’t the coffee shop experience. Looked at the Magnifica S and decided to buy it based on reviews and the fact that it was bean to cup. I can honestly say that this machine makes the best cup of coffee I have ever had. Loads of videos on Youtube for support and operating instructions. I like a nice strong coffee and this delivers, so easy as well. It probably takes the same amount of time to make an instant coffee. I really do recommend this coffee machine.
Magnifica S.
For the first 2 months I was having to descale this machine every 2 weeks even with a water filter in it! I posted a question re descaleing on Amazon and ended up phoning De’longhi customer services who were brilliant.
My instruction manual DOES’NT have the part where it tells you how to set the water hardness/softness, neither did my machine come with a water test kit.
De’longhi sent me a water test strip and emailed me the instruction manual that does include how to set water hardness ( also the pdf manual below this item on Amazon DOES include how to set water hardness )
The machine was set to hard water but my water is soft. I’ve changed the settings and everything is great now!
I’ve had this Magnifica S just under 3 months and love it. I use it exclusively for lattes.
I’ve found 3 brands of beans (so far ) that this machine makes beautiful lattes with, I’ve also found lots of brands that were nasty!
The Magnifica S is easy to use, easy to clean and makes perfect coffee. 5/5
Enjoy 🙂
Good value. Great machine for beginners.
This is our first bean to cup machine. Once we’ve got the settings right we actually have very tasty coffee. We find the cappucino maker takes a long time, and unless you have the right milk, correct jug, and the right temperature it takes so long to heat up that the coffee goes cold so the temperature of the coffee could def be hotter. We prefer to just heat up our milk in the microwave first and then put the coffee straight in. If you were using cold milk your drink would be cold quite quickly. but if you didn’t, the coffee would go cold quite quickly.
The water container is quite large so not having to fill every time we’ve made a couple of cups is great, but the container for the used grounds fills up quickly, especially if one of the used ‘pucks’ falls the wrong way up.
A few weeks after using, the machine suggested we adjust the water hardness levels, though we’d had it 6 months before it did this..? The factory settings for the grinder are all wrong though, we changed ours quite drastically because we were getting tepid weak brown water. Don’t skimp on beans and you’ll get a lovely cup of coffee.
I would recommend this, my first bean to cup machine.
This seems exactly what we were looking for and does exactly what it promised.
We had a slight issue but the care line were very helpful and offered YouTube links for guidance. I think I’d caused the issue as the manual is very thin and not comprehensive and I hadn’t followed something properly. So its a fairly expensive product with a flinsy guide but I’m very happy with the machine.
One other thing, after 2 weeks it asked us to decalc the machine. We don’t live in a hard water area, so we had to change the water setting as it defaults to hard water.
Overall it’s simple to use, we use it a lot and wouldn’t swap it now, the coffee is perfect, we couldn’t ask for more than that.
A great cup of coffee & cut down on my Costa bills!
Bought this back early Dec’20. It was a present for when the family could meet and it was used non-stop!
Having used a cafeteria for years, this seemed a little noisy but you get used to that..
It takes time to get familiar with the flashing buttons but you get to know after a while. Sometimes the clean button flashes when there are only a few grounds to empty. This is simple to do and then unusable again.
I clean this container with small paint brush as the grounds are slightly damp and stick a little. Not a problem. Then occasionally rinse out.
I always leave a cup under the spouts to catch the rinsing water thus saving time cleaning the tray so often.
I use it on the hottest water setting.
The water tank is easy to slide in and out on the right hand side.
It is trial and error with your size of cup and dial settings. I have shown you the settings used for my mug.
As you can see, when the spouts are pulled down above the mug/cup, the coffee comes out almost creamy. No milk added to this mug yet!
The coffee smells and tastes lovely. I have tried a few but Aldi & Lidl’s own coffee bean are very affordable and just as good. The beans are easy to insert…just lift lid left side and pour in
I am very happy with my Delongue Magnifica.
An absolute pleasure to own and use. Makes a far superior coffee to any from the likes of Starf**ks or Costabloo*y fortune.
Reassuringly easy to use and clean, especially the milk frothing side.
I can not praise this bean to cup machine e
Bill.
nough.
Easy to use fresh tasty coffee in a minute, beans or ground
First thing the coffee it makes is great and easy. Added bonus…if you want a change from your regular beans you can just pop a scoop of ground coffee in the top and make a cuppa that way.
Replaced a barista style machine with bean grinder and frothing wand. Read the instructions first! The settings from the factory where it was tested are a good baseline, but if you are like me and twist every knob to make sure everything turns and works you better remember roughly where they were. For a standard coffee you just turn on wait 30 seconds for warm up and press the button. Hey presto smooth rich coffee within 30 seconds.
There are lots of clunks and whirs inside the machine at startup as it does it’s cleaning cycle (and when it shuts down), but not as loud as using an external grinder.
The really good thing: awesome steam power on the milk frother quickly gives you really quick hot frothy milk.
The niggly thing: the grounds collector needs a bit of jiggling to be in correctly.
The annoying thing: After you’ve used the steam wand it can take up to 10 minutes before you can get another coffee. This is waiting for things to cool down. The hack is to run hot water through the steamer until the coffee cup symbols stop flashing (about 10-15 seconds).
Excelle
I have had this for one year and two months now and it has had no problems. I really enjoy the coffee from it and it is easy to use one you get used to it. When we first started using it I occasionally pushed the off button rather than the button to deliver coffee. The nice thing is that it seems to know it was switched off and on quickly and doesn’t repeat the rinse cycle, so this really helped reduce any frustration. I have occasionally run it without beans and it would be handy if there was a low bean light, but would I really want to pay more for that? I love the fact that it does NOT use capsules and is so environmentally friendly. My family use to have one of those capsule machines and I hated seeing all of the rubbish it created and the cost of the capsules. I felt guilty and I get very frustrated when I still see capsule machines being sold. This machine must have paid for itself in terms of being able to use much cheaper bagged coffee rather than capsules and it tastes better. I put the waste grounds on my garden and get a great sense of satisfaction from doing so. Two spouts means it can make two cups at a time. One improvement would be to have slightly more clearance for taller cups. I have a different machine that heats just enough water for a cup of tea and that would be a feature I would pay for to avoid having two machines on the side and it would be efficient and many of the components already exist in the device, although a slightly larger water holder may be a good idea for such a machine. If only I could say “Alexa, make me a coffee” and it checked there was a cup and made the coffee while I was walking to the machine :).
Pays for itself if you're using pods now.
Bought to stop all the plastic waste my previous machine created, should have got this first. I used to spend at least 50 a month on the plastic pods, now I spend about a tenner a month on the beans, saving 40 a month. I’ve already had it 4 months so it has almost half paid for itself already, and the spent grinds go in my wormer rather than staying encased in a plastic pod in a landfill site somewhere. Only downside is you can’t vary the flavours easily like you can with the pods, but a small price to pay for all the benefits it brings.
Three years on... Still love it!
I bought this on here in Nov 2017. So it has been happily chugging away for over 3 years. I use it a ton for the bean to cup function (never actually used the ground coffee function, as I have a feeling it would mess up the insides for no real value).
Anyway. It really is great. No hesitation at all in recommending it.
There are three areas they could improve:
1/ The ‘Heating Pad’ at the top is utterly pointless. They would be better off to remove it entirely as it takes up space on the top right side for no reason (has anyone in the history of this machine ever used this function? I really doubt it.)
It would be much better if they put a second container for whole beans where that is. Then you could either have twice as many beans of your favourite coffee. Or else try two entirely different ones.
For me it would be nice to have my ‘normal’ blend of caffeinated beans in one, and a de-caffeinated bean in the other one (assuming they had a second bean holder section!) so that I could easily drink one type during the day and swap to using the other one at night. (Or maybe for a husband and wife, one for her, one for him, possibly with different grinding settings?)
Currently I end up just using instant de-caffeinated if I have a cup at night, and it definitely doesn’t taste as nice as a bean to cup would.
I do think this could be a big improvement to an already great machine.
2/ The grinding settings are a bit one-dimensional (by that I mean that they don’t feel very inviting to change more than the couple of experiments you do when you first get the machine) – There are ones on the front and one in the actual bean holder itself.
Because they are dials it is ok. But it does tend to mean that you set it to one setting for both that you like and never touch them again (in case you forget where you had them in my case).
It would be nice if you could have a choice of a couple of settings more easily, so you could compare grinding settings and strength on a more linear, daily basis, if you wanted (or just leave it).
It feels like its possible to do it, but I would have to make it an actual ‘project’ to test, rather then just a normal part of making a cup of coffee.
I sort of feel like their should be more thought gone in to how to change the blend more easily at the moment a person is making the coffee, without having to become a professional Barista!
At the moment you have the grind setting in the bean to cup chamber for example, which is one setting. It would be nice if there was some kind of ‘test’ function where the machine would automatically make you cups in a row at different grinding settings, and then you could just pick the one you liked.
I know! I know! I can do this. But just thinking out loud as to what would be nice. And this strikes me as doable with some thought and design work.
3/ As I said I haven’t used the ‘ground coffee’ part in the middle top of the machine, as instinctively I feel like the coffee grounds would get everywhere inside the internals of the machine. Maybe they need to show some videos on how to use this more from a creative coffee person perspective? Not sure. It just feels like the ground thing in the middle is an afterthought somehow?

Ok. All that said. I love this machine! I think it is really good value for a bean to cup coffee maker.
If you like coffee, then honestly, buying this is a no-brainer.
I’d like some extras. But honestly at this price point, they are really only niggles. You shove good beans in. It spits out lovely coffee with a nice creamy head.
I don’t really want to pay more than about 250. So it may well be that others do more. But as this has been the number 1 machine on here for years they are doing something right.
You will like it 🙂
Great machine, great features, great coffee.
I’ve been a Nespresso/Starbucks pod user for many years until my Nespresso machine began leaking for the second time, so I decided to try something different. I didn’t want to go too mad price wise initially and, looked at the De’Longhi Magnifica bean to cup machine reviews and decided to buy one. Probably the best 252 I’ve ever spent. I’ve been using Starbucks coffee beans at 15 kg which works out at about 11p per cup. That’s a third of the price of Starbucks pods by the way, and more like a quarter the price of Nespresso ones. Not only that, it makes a great coffee exactly to your liking with your preferred coffee bean. Personally, I like Starbucks Dark Roast.
Great if you read the instructions
Excellent machine. Make sure you read the instructions well; it’s not a toy and is a complex piece of kit. That said, after familiarising yourself with the basics, it’s pretty straightforward. Just check you have water in it, and check the bin isn’t full of used powder. If you use coffee that’s pre ground, just turn the strength knob anti clockwise and use the central hopper. Don’t do this if the machine isn’t turned on. And make sure you use the single cup button. Also note that you should only change the grind setting as the grinder is operating. If you do those things you shouldn’t have any problems. I live in a hard water area, so I use bottled water from a soft water area, like Buxton or highland spring. That means you can set the machine to soft water use which will mean less frequent descaling. Lots of control over grind coarseness, flavour strength and coffee amount, so you can tailor it to your taste. Cappuccino frother works well, gives mixture of hot milk and froth. Always clean the frother tube after use, wipe it and remove it, run it under a tap and then run a shot of steam through it before putting it back. Just get into the habit and it’s very quick and straightforward. I love it. (I’ve gone into some detail about how to use it since I know a couple of idiots who haven’t read the instructions properly and blame the machine…)
