At $185 this was quite a bit larger than my last dia flat stone and also cheaper. So far it seems great though I haven't used it much yet.

This is very fast in bringing my wetstones to flat. Now I am assured of a flat surface that does not gouge my plane blade or chisel. I just ruined my Woodriver plane blade because I used a diamond sharpening plate that convex on the 1000 grit and concave on the 400 grit. Now I have to correct that with my wetstone that is flattened by DMT dia-flat.

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersWas NOT too impressed with the reviews so before I gave this diamond lapping plate a chance I opted to get the "Maxi-smart Lapping Plate 2.0." Quality control was its downfall in my opinion. It was NOT flat at all and was convexing my Ohishi waterstones. So, I returned it quick faster than a hurry! I was hesitant to buy DIA-FLAT LAPPING PLATE because of how expensive it was for my budget and for the reviews as well, but I like to trip on the same lapping stone...Anyway, I got my DIA-FLAT LAPPING PLATE and it was FLAT! Just like EARTH! Kidding! But seriously this plate is true to its dead flatness and so far so good. Now, the next thing, will it stand the test of time? Will the diamonds embedded in the plate remain in there location after multiple uses. Time will tell but for right now, I am very pleased with the lapping plate!

While expensive, this is a great lapping plate for flattening water stones. It makes quick work of an otherwise tedious job.

I lapped two aluminum oxide stones and two Carborundum stones. The plate works incredibly well. It cuts very fast when the stone is rough, the smoother it gets the less bite it has (which is to be expected). I was able to use the stones I lapped to clean precision machine surfaces without issues. I can't see any wear on the lapping plate. I am very happy with the quality and flatness of the stones lapped on i

A quality lapping plate is a necessity if you are using water stones and this is the best one that I could find. It is flat and the diamonds are even across the entire plate. Exactly as advertised but dang...just seems pricey.

Great results and a big time saver.
Others mentioned an uneven distribution of abrasive but mine is uniform across the entire surface. I flattened my 10,000 stone and touched up my straight razor as a test.

I flattened my kitchen oil-stone, after 15 years of use, and it was not only flat but honing knifes became way faster! So I had to freshen all of my knives and my quilting shears. Then I did my Norton 4 k/8 k and Shapton 12 k water stones and my razors were very happy too!

I had a Shapton #8000 ceramic stone and seriously gouged it by sharpening a M4 steel knife (most likely because I pushed down too hard). I was concerned that the stone was ruined but used this lapping plate with VERY LIGHT pressure to fix the Shapton stone. It worked great. I wonder if some of the reviews that stated diamond loss was occurring were because people pushed down very hard. Even if this were not the case, the plate looks new and light pressure gives a perfect reconditioning. The lapping plate is expensive, but it was a perfect fix and likely will be used for years to come.

    Perfetto

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersNicht günstig aber absolut we
    Wer braucht so was?

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersTiptop!

Antwort vom DMT Kundendienst: “… The DIAFLAT-95 will be the perfect flattening stone for your fine grit water stones. It won’t damage your water stones, and when lapping the finest of your stones, just use lighter pressure if you want a finer scratch pattern. …”

Daraufhin habe ich die 95 micron Platte bestellt.
    Mein erster Eindruck:

I used it to flatten two oil stones and a wet Stone. This diamond plate helped me to easily accomplish this task. I also used it to flatten and square up one of my plane irons. I did all this using only water to keep the diamond plate from getting clogged. So far this has been a worthy investment.

Overpriced but does flatten water stones well and quickly. Make pencil marks across the stones and lap until pencil remove. Reveals the high spots. Allows more accurate sharpening of woodworking plane irons. I am using it with Shapton glass stones. You can achieve the same thing with carbide dust on glass or granite plate, but this is convenient and less mess.

Works great on waterstones. I was hoping it would be good for lapping plane bodies etc as well, but it is not very aggressive at all, and a couple of high peaks leave significantly deeper scratches in the metal. That's ok for stones, but not for a finish surface.

ONCE MY MAN MADE JAPANESE WHETSTONES WEAR OUT, I AM DONE WITH THEM. THEY ARE NOT WORTH THE INVESTMENT. A BELGIUM YELLOW COTICULE COSTS THREE HUNDRED BUCKS AND WELL WORTH IT. YOU HARDLY EVER NEED TO LAP THE NATURAL STONES BUT WHEN YOU DO THIS WORKS GREAT.
I RESTORE STRAIGHT RAZORS AND THIS A GREAT LAPPING PLATE.

I have been using the DMT plate to flatten my Norton water stones. It is fast and saves money not buying the wet sanding paper I was using on a piece of granite.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersGreat for lapping, and grinding too
This stone is nice and big, so I can lap 8×3 waterstones without leaving the edge of the stone. It cuts the medium of the stones with ease, and flattening an 8000 Norton takes maybe a minute.

Diamonds cut fast, and these diamonds are BIG, so I can use this to do initial grinding where I might otherwise have gone to a wheel. Thus I can get a flat face, rather than a concave one.

It's nice and heavy. I just wet the water stone I'm sharpening, then lay the plate on the stone and slide it back and forth a few times and the stone is flat. I love it because it works fast and I have confidence that it is flat. I would definitely recommend it.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersSo far so good! I just got mine a week ago and I used it to flatten 4 Shapton glass stones. I have a much cheaper lapping plate and it takes forever! I just want to get back to working ASAP. Because I didn't want to spend all this money, I waited until my stones were jacked up. Even as messed up as they were, it only took me 15-20 min for all 4 stones. I would buy this again! It is a time saver and it seems to be a long lasting product (other reviewers). It is also a lot cheaper than the Sharpton lapping plate.

Bought this to flatten my kramer water stones. Did a great job. I have 400,1000,3000,5000,10000 grit and it flattened them all beautifully. It gives you tips for your higher grits to keep them smooth. I recommend this for anyone that's wants a great product that will keep your stones super flat. I am a chef and keep my knives sharpened daily and this helps me keep them sharp. Pricey but you pay for quality!!!

So far, I've used the plate to flatten an 800 grit and a 4000 grit Japanese waterstone and an India oil stone. It worked extremely well on all three. The size and grit are perfect and it's much cleaner and easier than fooling around with glass plates and sandpaper.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersExcellent purchase. Large area combined with uniform consistent grit makes for an excellent product. While it is true that you can use sandpaper to flatten a sharpening stone, the combination of cumalitive cost for each stone and the ease of use make this a no brainier if you will be flattening more than a few stones.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersVery good but pricy
For years and used a granite slab with either emery cloth or silica carbide granules for my lapping surface. It worked great until I dropped & broke the slab. Having had a good experience with DMT I opted to give their lapping plate a try.

    Likes:
    * It does appear to be very flat. I set it on my saw table and used a dial gauge to check. This was tricky to do and did not work well but in the end I saw nothing to doubt DMT’s claim of .0005″.

    * Did a great job on my Japanese Water stones and did it VERY fast.

    * It is heavy enough to stay put on a non-slip surface most of the time. When lapping my finer water stones, as they became flat, the surface tension between the two became so high that I could actually pick up the 4 LB. plate by lifting the stone. So obviously the plate would slide back and forth as I lapped the stone. My granite slab was ~50 lbs. so even though I could feel this suction effect, it never moved. Just keep the lapping plate very wet and rinse both it and the stone often to work through the issue.

    * The 10×4 inch size is BIG for a purchased lapping plate and large enough to flatten most items while in constant contact. I.e. you don’t go over the edge.

    * Convenience: Just pull it out, wet it down, and start lapping.

    DISLIKEs:
    * COST. Very expansive but as others have pointed out – you get what you pay for. My granite slab was free (counter top left over) and emery cloth is cheap. Comparing the cost/performance of the two methods I will probably return to my prior set up when my Dia-Flat becomes too worn to do the job.

    * Diamond surface initially had flaws. The surface had some diamond pieces that were larger and/or stuck too high. (Poorly stated?) What I saw when I lapped the sole of a jack plane were scratches indicative of what you might see if using 60 grit. Comparatively speaking there was a limited number of these scratches and when I slowly ran my fingers over the Dia-Flat I could feel a few “bumps” or as I said: diamond pieces that were larger and/or stuck too high. After doing a lot lapping, this problem went away. Don’t know if this is typical or just an anomaly in the one I got but considering the price I was disappointed and it took about 20 minutes remove those darn scratches. For this reason, coupled with the price, I rated the Dis-Flat 4 stars.

Longevity? no idea but for the price i hope it is long. Would like to see other reviewers comment/update there reviews to comment on it, I will.

Along with my Atoma, this plate is second to none for leveling coarse to medium grit water stones. I would step it up to a coarse Dia-Sharp for medium-fine to extra fine grit stones.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersA fast and easy way to flatten waterstones
I bought the DMT DIA-FLAT Lapping Plate because I was tired of using sandpaper to flatten my waterstones. While sandpaper worked fine, I just wanted a faster and more efficient way to flatten my stones. I did consider a few other diamond lapping plates but settled on this one, even though this one was the most expensive, because i liked the size and aggressiveness advertised on this plate.

I’ve only used this lapping plate a few times so far but I am very glad i bought it. Flattening stones isn’t as much of a chore now and this thing gets them dead flat every time. It also motivates me to lap the stones during every sharpening session while with sandpaper I often didn’t because it was a pain. It is a bit heavy as others have mentioned but that’s really a nonissue for me. The only con that comes to mind is the price but you get what you pay for I suppose.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI bought the "95" model over the regular Dia-Flat because the 95 has higher grit that is better for finer waterstones. It's a big plate, and that is a plus in my opinion as it makes flattening the stones easier. It was expensive, but should last the rest of my life, and it would be stupid to be cheap after spending $600+ on Japanese waterstones. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone that wants an idiot-proof way to prep their waterstones.

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersI put off buying this for a long time due to the cost. I'm glad I finally bought it though, as it makes a HUGE difference to the tedious process of flattening water stones. The weight took me a back at first, as did the size. Both are good things, however. It took quite a while to flatten my stones at first, but now that they are flat all it takes is a few seconds after using them to get them flat again. Definitely worth the cost. Always rinse and dry after use, and rinse between grits! Made in USA.

This does what it is supposed to well but I wish the finish was finer so the tools would not have to take too much additional polishing.

Previously, I relied on rubbing two stones together to flatten them. The softer stone will obviously wear much faster than it should using this method. I’ve seen some odd complaints in the reviews of this plate but, the guys I’ve spoken to who use these on a regular basis feel that it is a one-time purchase that will last for years. You’ll be surprised how non-flat your stones are when you use this plate.

I use expensive A-2 chisels & plane blades so I’m not willing to pinch pennies on getting flat stones that are required for getting a flat edge on your blades.

Golden Review Award: 10 From Our UsersThis is the third Dia-Flat plate I've bought. I keep one handy for all situations. For flattening Japanese water stones this is the only way to go. You will save hundreds of dollars in expensive carborundum sandpaper in the first 3 months. And this sucker is F-L-A-T!!! Don't sharpen carborundum stones with this though, it will cut the diamond surface height down. All other stones work awesome with this plate. I can't say enough great things about it.

Golden Review Award: 17 From Our UsersWorks Brilliantly
I’ve owned the Dia-Flat for a few months, and can say without reservation that it flattens waterstones flawlessly, and can even be used to lap smaller tools. Previously, I used sandpaper, drywall mesh, and other diamond plates for flattening; each of these methods had drawbacks. Sandpaper wears unevenly, and can be tricky to use without unevenly abrading whatever surface you’re working as well. Flattening water and oil stones brought about the early demise of a couple of my regular DMT diamond plates. The most sensible explanation I’ve encountered for this is that the loose particles from the stone can wear away the regular diamond plate’s nickel coating. This doesn’t happen with the Dia-Flat. The only drawback to the Dia-Flat is its price, but in this case as in so many others you get what you pay for.

I place the Dia-Flat on a stand made by DMT in my kitchen sink and flatten stones on it under running water. Rinse any remaining grit from the Dia-Flat between stones. One tip for flattening polishing stones is to back off your pressure after the stone is flat, and lightly abrade the surface of the stone before use. DMT includes this tip in the instructions, and it works.

Golden Review Award: 40 From Our UsersNothing better for flattening your stones!
I can’t say enough about this new DIA-FLAT from DMT.

Having previously used an XXCoarse DIA-SHARP (D8XX) to flatten my Norton waterstones, the DIA-FLAT has taken an already decent product and improved it on several fronts.

SIZE: This massive 10″ by 4″ plate is much bigger than the various sharpening stones on the market (and much bigger than my D8XX that is only 8″ by 3″). This allows you to move your sharpening stone around without ever leaving the edges of the DIA-FLAT.

WEIGHT: The biggest surprise is the weight of the DIA-FLAT, at 4 pounds it is 50% heavier than the 2.7 pound D8XX.

SURFACE: The DIA-FLAT shares the D8XX’s coarseness of 120 microns, but instead of being clumped in a series of small circles — the entire services is coated with 30 carats of diamonds (3/4 carat per square inch!) with a guaranteed flatness within 0.0005″.

BOTTOM LINE: The DMT DIA-FLAT makes it simpler than ever to achieve and maintain a truly flat sharpening stone, assuring a better sharpening experience — and more importantly, a better experience using your sharpened tools and/or utensils.

ONE TIP FOR USE: If you are someone who uses several sharpening stones (coarse to fine) to achieve a polished, even edge — make sure to run your DIA-FLAT under running water and thoroughly rinse off the particles from one stone before moving to the next, so as to prevent cross contamination. This is difficult to do, but it is a necessity if flattening more than one stone.

Golden Review Award: 27 From Our UsersMy hobbyist woodworking career encompasses nearly forty years. In all that time I have been trying to get the ultimate "sharp" on my chisels and plane irons. Sometimes I have spent as much time sharpening as actually building a project. Today, it all came together. I put a grid on my 1000 grit waterstone that was supposedly flat and by golly it took 10 minutes to get the grid worked off with my new DMT stone. I literally was taken aback. After flattening I put a chisel through my normal process for sharpening as taught by Deneb Puchalski on the Lie Neilsen video and it happened; the ultimate sharp! The micro bevel is perfect, the chisel is absolutely square and it shaves off end grain like a knife through butter only better. I'm a believer....by all means it's expensive but it does get a tool sharp and as the previous reviewer states " It takes sharpening to an art form." If you want the ultimate sharp, this is the lapping stone to get!

Golden Review Award: 32 From Our UsersMany of the reviews listed are for products that are not the "Diaflat". The Diaflat is a 10x4 inch diamond truing tool for water stones and other grinding equipment. I bought it after reviewing the information on it, listening to Charles Shwarz's review, author of "The Anarchist Tool Chest", and finding the best price. Expensive, yes, but the promise of superior performance for and extended period of time offers long range saving in both time and money. A good sharpening stone can cost a lot of money and at some point they will need to be trued. This is the ideal tool for that short of having high grade professional equipment. It is great for those of us who don't want to spend our time truing stones so we can sharpen tools with precision. The bottom line is this tool is for those of us who take sharpening to the next level; art.
