Looks lovely does a mean toasted cheese sarnie – but at that price it bloody well should. Had no idea being up there with the trend as a treat was so expensive.

Will last and give great toast unlike so many other toasters. Yes it costs more, but you will notice the difference. Even toasting. Make sure you preheat and follow the directions!

This is my second Dualit toaster. The first I had for many years and I rashly gave it away to our daughter. I’m delighted to have a new one and it’s as fantastic as the last one. It’s also great to have a product that is made by a British company. I cannot recommend these toasters highly enough. They are so attractive in a contemporary kitchen, very easy to use, toast the bread evenly and exceptionally durable. I wouldn’t buy any other toaster.

Hasn’t realised quite how rubbish our previous (10) toaster was until we got this! Not reason enough to spend quite this much of course, but the Dualit is much better looking to boot of course. Obviously!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersAfter refitting my kitchen I purchased this toaster and a matching Kettle. After a week of use making toast I noticed a tarnish between the slots at the top of the toaster. Its only been used for toast and cleaned with a damp cloth. I wrote to the customer service department but got no reply. I have not tried any metal cleaner yet in fear of making things worse. As a toaster its perfect, very fast and easy to get the perfect toast.

Well – I dithered for ages before spending lots of money on a toaster.
I needn’t have worried – apart from the clunky timer (clockwork) this is without doubt the best toaster I have ever had.
    It toasts perfectly & evenly.
I did save 30 by buying one that had been returned so the box had been opened but the product unused (made me feel better about the price)

This is a fantastic toaster. My last toaster was soo slow! This usually gets my bread made into toast in 2 minutes or less. For a toaster it is a bit on the expensive side, but it is of good quality. Very happy with my purchase.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersA week after my Dualit toaster was delivered, I am wondering how I lived without it!

My main purchase influences were recommendations from friends and my desire to be more environmentally friendly in not buying throw away small electricals.

My main reason for writing this review is because this thing toasts so evenly and nicely I cannot believe I have lived forty odd years without one.

I know that this toaster seems shockingly expensive but the reliability and stonking performance are well worth the purchase price. I even realised when I got it out of the packet that my great aunt had one and that had been working ever morning for over fifty years.

This is truly a fantastic toaster, had I bought one 35 years ago when I moved out of home Inwould have saved over 200 quid in all the broken toasters I threw away.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersLooks lovely. Works differently to other toasters- the manual dial timer cannot be stopped or sped up once it’s turned so you’ll have to switch off the power when your toast is ready and just let the timer finish. Power must be on for toaster to toast but timer will still work regardless, meaning sometimes I have turned the timer on, walked away and realised it’s not toasted my bread because it’s switched off at the wall. Makes great toasted sandwiches using the separately purchased cage!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWarehouse deal, saving 100, so excellent price, however, a little more damage than was described. Crumb tray is bent & the left handle missing making clean up a a tad fiddly. That said, when you account for the saving, this can be fixed & doesn’t affect the actual toaster s despite this I have still given 5 as this is the best toaster ever for a large household. Practice your preferred timings first as this toasts incredibly quick. As with all dualit products this will last for years.

A fantastic thing that has made our weekends (and sometimes our weekdays, too) so much better. And there wasn’t anything wrong with them before, either. Still, the Dualit has managed to make a whole little family look forward to weekend breakfasts before the weekend is even over. We also got the sandwich inserts, perhaps called baskets, that we now wouldn’t want to live without. Great, great stuff, this!

My daughter has been singing the praises of her Dualit Toaster for many years. I wish I had listened to her earlier. This is a real gem! The variable controls let me have my toast exactly as I like it. Other electric toasters have a tendency to dry the bread but the Dualit does not. This is the best thing since toasting in front of an open coal fire.

Golden Review Award: 22 From Our UsersMy ex husband got custody of my last Dualit toaster that was still going strong ( and probably still is) after years. AS I remember we only had to replace an element once. In the 10 years we have been apart I have got through 3 toasters ,all ended up in the tip as they couldn’t be repaired . So I think the high price is justifiable given that the element and timer are replaceable if they fail. The operation of these toasters takes a bit of getting used to but it means you can make sure you get the toast exactly how you like it!

Golden Review Award: 24 From Our UsersI suppose the main question for anyone considering this toaster is “does it justify the price?”. In my view, it absolutely does.

First of all, it makes cracking toast. I can’t stand dry, crunchy toast, which seemed to be an unfortunate speciality for some of my old toasters. This one, in contrast, gets me a nice golden slice without taking all the moisture out. And so far it’s dealt admirably with bread rolls and odd-shaped bits of ciabatta, too.

As you might expect for something intended for commercial kitchens, the build quality is very high. There’s no doubting that the Dualit Classic is built to last and to be easily repaired. Obviously that extends its lifespan well beyond that of a typical toaster, but it also scores some environmental brownie points too. It’s nice knowing my shiny new toaster won’t be landfill in two years’ time. It’s also hand made in Britain; something I’m very happy to support.

Some people feel having to manually eject the toast is an unjustifiable failure for such a costly toaster. It’s deliberate. The idea is your toast stays warm until you’re ready to grab it, and it really does work.

Last, but not least, it’s an design classic on par with Eames chairs, Kitchenaid stand mixers, Apple iMacs, and so on. Not everyone has the luxury of gazing lovingly at an iconic, internationally recognised example of 20th Century industrial design while waiting for their morning toas

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersReally lovely and well made toaster, but the slots are far too small for our needs (so had to be returned). I hope this is the case, to justify the high price, but it does look worth the money. This has to be the best toaster on the market. Replaces one that is over 15 years old and in my repair/custom shop (you can get spare parts easily). Easy to use, adaptable to your degree of toasting preference and accommodates thick slices of bread. Can toast one slice of bread without using energy heating a vacant slot.

Can’t fault the build quality and solidity.

Handy hint – if you have toast for breakfast and prepare a sandwich for lunch, popping in a couple of slices of frozen bread after toasting your breakfast defrosts the bread nicely without crisping it up.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersThese toasters are expensive, but so is a Rolls Royce compared to a normal car. It is very well made, but of course the reason you buy it is to make toast and it does that incredibly well. Unlike most other toasters, it evenly toasts the bread and is also consistent. When you hear people say “they don’t make things like they used to”, in Dualit’s case they actually do and for good reason. Nothing lasts forever, but the ability to buy parts at a reasonable price means it will last generations.

Golden Review Award: 3 From Our UsersI don’t know how it works but it just does.

You pop raw bread into the little letter boxes and turn a dial, you can hear some tick tick ticking which I assume is tiny people with clogs on running around inside performing the magic. After a little while they throw the transformed raw bread, which is now toast!!! upward – the little people aren’t so strong so you have to assist them raising it with a lever but really that’s the least you can do after their efforts.

It is a classic Dualit 2 slot toaster and works very well. It is not an automatic pop up toaster, but controlled by a mechanical timer. It takes a few goes to get the timer just right for how you like your toast, for me just over 2 on the dial works and you can raise the toast to check with the lever on the front at any time to see how it is going. The great advantage is that this toaster will not have to go to landfill like my last 3 pop up toasters. It is very well made and robust, you can buy replacement elements and timer for this machine or return to Dualit to repair. I look forward to many decades of great toast!

Golden Review Award: 4 From Our UsersThe Toaster does, what it’s supposed to do. It’s reliable toasting bread. The slices are getting crispy on the outside and stay soft in the inside. Build quality seems to be great, but the device is still to new to get a conclusion about this. Bought it at a warehouse deal and everything was fine, the toaster was in a almost new condition.

  65. EricaGarret says:

Excellent! Follow the instructions and safety advice (Switch off at wall when not in use) and everything is fine. Yes it takes home made bread, as long as you don’t cut your slices like paving slabs. (There IS an art to cutting fresh bread – use a sharp knife and cut backward toward yourself slowly using a little pressure – do not cut in forward thrusts). We have a Panasonic bread machine and it takes average sized machine made bread. Best not to use freshly made bread in a toaster – 24 hours old is better. The machine is very well made and easy to use. Average setting on times is about 2 – 2.5. If you over do it, and toast is burning, just switch power of at the wall (Note: the timer will continue – it is mechanical but power will be off) and lift the leaver to remove toast. 🙂

The dial works like a timer to toast for longer or shorter times to get the toast browner or paler. The lift up lever allows you to lift up and put down the bread. It has a crumb tray which pulls out. I’m hoping it will last for ages on account of the price.

A solid (literally) and reliable device. It has some heating elements and a mechanical run-back timer, plus a switch that turns on one or both elements. There is so very little to go wrong. This is m second Dualit toaster. I purchased my first over 15 years ago. That’s how long they last. In fact the first one is still working but the mechanical timer is starting to get a bit worn out. I could have purchased a replacement unit and swapped it over, but I figured that after this amount of time the elements were probably getting ready to be changed. I could have also changed these, since spares are available. But the cost of new elements and timer was more than a new unit, and so it was just less hassle to purchase a new one. I don’t resent that one little bit. After 15 years and still working…..

it was not for me. it was a gift for a friend. BUT my Duallit toaster is to my knowledge 30 years old; I inherited it when we took over a country pub. It’s now in my home and I’ve had new elements and a new switch (parts always available) and it’s perfect. My friend loves hers too.

Very good job,by our British brothers!!! This toaster is one of the best things I have ever purchased! My US girlfriend recommended it to me.I tested it in USA ,at her house, where she has the same one,and for me was nothing left ,but to order one for my home in Bulgaria!!! Of course amazon.co.uk is the closest place to buy so i did!!! Very happy with it.It is indeed the Rolls Royce of the toasters as they say!!! One of my best investments lifetime!!! Thank you Dualit!!!

I have always wanted a Dualit toaster and am Very pleased with it. No problems with bread slice sizes and find it really efficient. I have had numerous toasters over the years and generally have given them away to family and friends because they have been disappointing. This one is definitely here to stay!

Looks great, real sturdy bit of kit – which I love – only thing that lets this down slightly is if you put bread that is slightly thicker than the norm then it get’s a bit charcoaled – unless anyone knows how to get round this? but yes stunning looking and will probably go on for ever…

Golden Review Award: 5 From Our UsersI can only speak as I find. After four years daily use there is a bit of darkening around the top, but otherwise this item is looking fine and still working well without the problems that some users have encountered. I like its “non pop-up” nature, one less thing that can malfunction.
I must assume that assembly is a bit erratic, but that I got a good one. The only attention this has needed has been emptying the crumb tray, and even that is easier than on many models.
*Added roughly 3 years later on* The darkening round the top has continued, it is now more noticable but the toaster itself is still in perfect working order, and daily use. I don’t care how it looks anyway, just as long as it works.

Surprising controversy about a relatively simple device

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersA toaster for life. Still hand made in England. I decided to go for the polished stainless steel option and it’s a real statement. These classic Dualits aren’t pop-up toasters, they use a timer and have a manual lever to raise the toast – very simple to use. Wide slots can accommodate a hand-cut bread. The Vario model has a two/four slot switch. This toaster gives great results as you’d expect at this price. If you’re in the market for an expensive toaster then this is really the one to have. All parts are easily replaced and readily available – Dualit also to a repair service for UK customers.

I love the Dualit toasters. This one looks great. It does take longer to toast the bread than my previous Dualit, which was exactly the same design.
I had my previous one for about ten years, though it only gets used at the week-end. The switch for two or four slices is a great idea. It is easy to clean, as the tray with crumbs is easily removed.

I love it!!!!! Am so pleased with it, it was on my wish list for over a year and it toasts just how I like my toast. I bought the sandwich toaster that slides into the slot at the same time and have had no problems with width of sandwich being toasted (unlike other reviewers). It looks smart on the work surface and I put up with its large size in my tiny kitchen as its beauty is greater than the recognition of its size!

Lovely solid toaster, looks beautiful and toasts quite well. Nice and easy crumb removal tray and manual lever to lift toast in and out. I’m not sure it’s worth the very high price though, it has an annoyingly noisy timer and doesn’t take bread that is cut too thick. I bought it for looks and a quality brand and it delivers both for me, it seems a sturdy and well made toaster.

Haven’t used my toaster very much. Will be put to good use when my son next stays the night, as we always have toast & marmalade for breakfast. Although this toaster is very expensive & basic, I love its looks and so far am satisfied with what toast it has produced. After reading through the different reviews both good & bad before buying, my Cream Dualit 2 slice toaster is exactly what I was expecting!

Hopefully it will last me longer than the 5 years my previous toaster lasted.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersWhat’s so good about this toaster is that it has basic functions that anyone can understand – and, thus, are far less likely to go wrong or break. Especially important is the bread riser, which is hand-operated and which is not a thin metal bar that comes up (which after a while warps and traps your toast), but a thick metal base that the slice of bread sits on all the time – down, and up, with no bother and nothing trapped. Excellent.

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersYou can buy toasters that do everything for you or you can buy a Dualit, it’s back to the old days. Don’t get me wrong, this is a fantastic toaster. A lever to pop your toast up or down, a switch for 2 slices or 4 slices and a clockwork timer for 3 minutes or less of toast cooking, what else do you need, apart from startling good looks.
The timer thingy gets a bit of getting used to, to find your correct level of toastiness for your toast, I reckon about 2.5 mins, which is just dark enough for me.
I also like the pull out tray for the crumbs, very easy to clean. Also, there aren’t many toasters where you can buy spare parts for, most are throw away. I don’t think I’ll need a different toaster ever.
I also bought the sandwich cage which means I can do cheese toasties in it too, and the cheese doesn’t fall out all over the inside of the toaster, simplisity at its best. (British engineering done well)
And I noticed in our local Waitrose cafe, they’ve got one as well…. and they do a lot of toast.

Bought this a good while ago so I can comment on its durability which is excellent its still as bright and shiny and it produces great toast as well I know they are expensive but nothing else looks as good as this, had no problems at all but I know from experience of there use in a commercial enviroment how easy and quick they are to repair when time and abuse take there toll.

For many years I had a four slice Dualit toaster but like all things it eventually wore out. Not wanting to spend too much money on a replacement I purchased a cheaper make Needless to say the cheaper make was not a patch on the Dualit and went the way of all things. Having been taught a lesson I have now bought another Dualit. It is extremely well made and it has very reliable elements and is so easy to use.I will never buy another make

Golden Review Award: 20 From Our UsersI bought this toaster over 10 years ago. Ever since my wife has been telling me that it’s rubbish and doesn’t toast evenly. The timer packed up recently (not too bad after so long) and I went online to find a replacement. It was only then that I discovered that I’d bought a BUN toaster and not a bread toaster. Yes, there is a difference. According the Dualit’s website: “Dualit’s commercial bun toasters are specifically designed to toast one side of the bun whilst warming the other, by heating the elements on each side of the slot to different temperatures.”

I guess I should have listened to my wife. The frustrating thing is that Amazon don’t mention anywhere that this isn’t for toasting bread. If you look at the reviews so many people are disappointed because it toasts unevenly. You need to buy the Dualit 47180 4 Slice NewGen Toaster – this one’s designed for the job you have in mind.

I bought this around 18-months ago and only now am I writing a review. Why? Because you buy a Dualit for the quality and longevity, so writing a review on day-one somewhat misses the point.

Firstly, the quality. It’s superb. It feels like a professional bit of kit that is built to last, rather than a plastic-formed toy. The dial, the level the switch, they’re all reassuringly high quality. If you set the dial to the same time 100 times, you’ll get the same result 100 times. This might seem a small point, but when rushing around making breakfast you don’t have to give it your full and undivided attention – bread in, lever down (well, up…), dial to your usual setting and off you go. Being lever-based, when done the toast doesn’t ‘pop’ up and get cold. It waits until you’re ready… sure, you can’t leave it forever, but it’s definitely a benefit.

Next, the taste. The main thing I’ve had to deal with is the ‘toasters are all the same’ comments and questions about spending a lot of money on a toaster. This does taste better. As above, it’s consistent so you always get great results, but it doesn’t dry your toast out and remove all texture and flavour and it toasts both sides absolutely evenly.

Now, the cost. Considering the two points above you can see you’re getting value for money. High build quality and excellent end results, that’s enough right? Well, also consider this can be repaired easily and cost effectively. Not that I’m expecting any faults for quite a long time… it’s nice to know when something does go wrong, I can buy one replacement part rather than send this to the tip and buy a new toaster. Being a product from a professional-grade company, you won’t struggle to find spare parts or somebody to service it for you.

Downsides last… just two, really. Firstly, if you set the timer too long you can’t easily cancel it. Not a huge deal as you soon learn the ‘right’ setting, but not ideal if you often change bread types and need to work this out on-the-fly. Secondly and lastly, some of the wider breads don’t fit entirely inside this toaster, they stick out a bit. Fortunately you can lever your toast up and spin it around if necessary, but it is a downside.

Overall a justified five stars, excellent quality, excellent value for money and a definite recommendation from me. It even looks the part too, adding a touch of quality to any kitchen!

This Dualit toaster is as simple and as good as possible. For me, not having a mechanism to pop up the toast is a plus. No mechanism to malfunction after one year!

The heating elements provide the ideal and uniform temperature to get an optimal toast. I particularly like the toasted sandwichs. The only drawback is the slot width (28 mm) that should be somewhat wider for sandwichs.

Cleaning is delicate but very simple and the covered heating element (Dualit says is a patented tecnology) makes them much less susceptible to damage that on any other toaster, and hope they last longer!

Price is high!.Yes, but results are also high! Better value then many lower cost toasters.

Well, 16 years on this toaster is still doing its job fine. Perhaps the elements are getting a little tired, but they’re easy enough to replace when the need eventually arises – one of the reasons I chose this in the first place.

These toasters are undeniably expensive, but beautifully made and designed for ease of maintenance – something very hard to find in this age where everything including >1000 computers is designed to be used then thrown away when any minor component fails.

Durable, aesthetically attractive, ergonomically close to perfection and makes good toast out of a wide range of sizes and thicknesses of bread… if only we’d bought the three slice version all those years ago instead! (Updated – actually, the four slice version would have shown more forethought!)

Okay…it’s alot of money to spend on a toaster but you really won’t regret it! Our last toaster took about 10 years to mildly brown a slice of bread but this baby takes 2-3 very quick minutes and produces wonderful toast which is pleasantly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, unlike the Melba-style toast we got from our old toaster which shattered into a million pieces when you put your marg on!!!!! It also looks cool in our newly decorated kitchen. Very satisfied toast addict!!

Golden Review Award: 2 From Our UsersI purchased this to replace a Kenwood toaster which had lasted 10 years based on reviews I’d seen. I was not disappointed. It looks very smart sitting on my worktop and makes lovely toast. The switch for one slot toasting is handy. Only downside to this is that if you put a waffle in to toast, because the holder is on an angle to raise and lower the item it gets stuck and you have to fish it out. But we have learnt from that episode. I have had this several months now and would definitely recommend i

Love this toaster. It is beautiful to look at and I like the fact that we can replace parts as they wear out, rather than keep having to buy new toasters. Ours has a selector for 2 or 4 slices which is useful, as we don’t always use the 4. Would have given 5* but slightly uneven toasting on one slot. Recommended.

I really bought this because I liked the idea of a professional type of toaster . I don’t think I would pay so much for a toaster for my residence but it is for a “holiday let”in Largs and I like to put in sturdy good quality items and tenants appreciate it. I have only looked at it so far and it looks good and I reckon it will produce good toast but who knows…I guess someone will use it soon but personally I never toast anything.
It does look nice and feel solid though and should not be confused with the plasticky cheaper Dualit, nice enough though they are too.

Golden Review Award: 8 From Our UsersIt’s an odd fact that virtually all toasters available for domestic use are the wrong size for the everyday slice of bread. There’s always an inch or so of bread sticking out that doesn’t get toasted. You’d think that they’d at least know the size of a slice of bread, wouldn’t you. The first thing that strikes about the Dualit is that the bread actually fits inside completely. So simple but so unusual. Sturdily constructed it takes up almost a square foot of worktop but we can live with that! With the manual variable timer you get the toast you want. Probably one of the best kitchen ‘tools’ that we’ve ever bought. Yes, it’s expensive but as they say ‘you get what you pay for’ & this is worth every penny. Great!

Golden Review Award: 11 From Our UsersYes, I agree with one reviewer that the slots could be deeper to accommodate bigger slices, and that the clockwork toaster timing setting takes a little experience to get right (but not that much). With those comments out of the way, its a lovely looking, well built piece of kit. Nice stainless, crafted by hand in the UK rather than cranked out from a faceless sweat shop, its a nice little quality treat for the home. Basically its a way of getting a sweet toaster that will last 20 years for the cost of 1 week’s depreciation on your german SUV.

Golden Review Award: 43 From Our UsersThis really cuts the mustard in your kitchen. It looks really cool, is easy to clean and easy to use. One switch to choose for one or two slots to heat up (saves the element if only toasting one slice) and the rotating dial to toast the bread.
It needs a bit of experimenting to work out how long to toast the bread but the “blob” setting on the dial is about right. And it really does keep the toast warm by not popping it up when done.
One gripe – mine doesn’t toast evenly over the bread. When the bottom is done the top is a bit underdone.
